Building industry recovery proceeds at different rates Edilizia, ripresa a velocità diverse Although the impact of the pandemic caused a slowdown across all the world’s economies in 2020, construction investments followed opposing trends on either side of the Atlantic.

The European construction industry experienced a severe 7.8% contraction and analysts believe it will take three years to fully recover. Current forecasts point to growth of 4.1% in 2021, 3.4% in 2022 and 2.4% in 2023. The residential segment suffered an even bigger contraction (-8.6%), although this year’s recovery is also expected to be higher than average (+4.7%) and closer to Europe’s estimated GDP growth of +4.9%. The recovery prospects for the residential segment will largely be determined by the volume and effectiveness of building support programmes and incentives introduced by the various European governments. In Italy, for example, the main incentive behind the much-anticipated recovery of the residential segment is the 110% Superbonus for energy and seismic upgrading of buildings. It is hoped that the effective rollout of this incentive (together with the previous Ecobonus, Sismabonus and Bonus façades schemes) will make up the ground lost last year in the renovation segment (-9.8%), which is expected to see a 14% recovery this year. As we were saying, the opposite trend is taking place on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. In the United States, construction investments grew in 2020 for the ninth consecutive year to reach an all-time high of US $1.43 trillion, up 4.7% on 2019. These investments were driven above all by the residential market, which recorded a 7% increase in new housing starts (1.38 million new homes, the highest figure since 2006), an 11.5% rise in numbers of single-family homes (a further 5% upturn is forecast for 2021) and 18.8% growth in sales of this type of housing.

This is great news for US clay brick manufacturers given that brick is enjoying renewed popularity as an exterior cladding material among both builders and homeowners, who consider it not just more attractive but also capable of adding greater value to homes compared to other materials.

It is no coincidence that Wienerberger’s most important acquisition in the last 15 years should have taken place in the United States, when in December the Austrian giant became the owner of Meridian Brick, the largest producer of clay façade solutions in the USA. 5

Nonostante nel 2020 l’impatto della pandemia si sia tradotto in una frenata di tutte le economie, gli investimenti in costruzioni hanno registrato andamenti opposti sulle due sponde dell’Atlantico. Nel vecchio continente l’anno scorso si è chiuso con un pesante -7,8%, una flessione che, secondo gli analisti, richiederà tre anni per essere interamente recuperata: le previsioni indicano una crescita del 4,1% nel 2021, del +3,4% nel 2022 e del +2.4% nel 2023.

Nel solo segmento residenziale, la caduta è stata addirittura maggiore (-8,6%), ma anche il rialzo quest’anno dovrebbe essere superiore alla media (+4,7%), più allineato alle stime di recupero del PIL nell’area (+4,9%). Larga parte delle prospettive di ripresa nel segmento residenziale dipenderà dal volume e dall’efficacia dei programmi di supporto e degli incentivi all’edilizia da parte dei vari Governi europei. In Italia, ad esempio, la grande leva su cui si concentrano le aspettative di rilancio del comparto residenziale è sicuramente il Superbonus 110% per la riqualificazione e l’efficientamento energetico e antisismico degli edifici. L’auspicio è che l’effettivo decollo dell’incentivo (unito ai precedenti Ecobonus, Sismabonus, Bonus facciate) possa

colmare il terreno perduto l’anno scorso nel segmento della riqualificazione (-9,8%) per il quale si stima un rimbalzo quest’anno del 14%. Trend opposto, dicevamo, sull’altra sponda dell’oceano Atlantico. Negli Stati Uniti gli investimenti in costruzioni sono aumentati nel 2020 per il nono anno consecutivo toccando il loro massimo storico: 1,43 trilioni di dollari (+4,7% sul 2019). A trainarli è stata proprio la forte spinta del mercato residenziale: +7% i nuovi cantieri residenziali (1,38 milioni di nuove case, record dal 2006), con un +11,5% per quelli relativi ad abitazioni monofamiliari (per il 2021 si prevede un nuovo +5%) e +18,8% per le compravendite riferite a questa tipologia residenziale. Per i produttori statunitensi di mattoni in laterizio questa è una gran buona notizia, dato che il “brick” utilizzato come rivestimento esterno delle case sta godendo di una rinnovata popolarità sia tra i costruttori che tra i proprietari, considerato un materiale non solo esteticamente più bello, ma anche a maggior valore aggiunto rispetto ad altri. Non è un caso che gli Stati Uniti siano stati il teatro della più importante acquisizione di Wienerberger negli ultimi 15 anni: dal dicembre scorso il colosso austriaco è infatti proprietario di Meridian Brick, il maggiore produttore di soluzioni facciavista in USA. 5

Terreal acquires German roof tile specialist Creaton

The Terreal group, a global leader in the brick and tile industry with plants located all over the world, has acquired Creaton, one of the largest German manufacturers of brick roofing tiles based in Wertingen, Bavaria.

The agreement is part of the French multinational’s strategic plan to expand its international footprint, positioning itself as the market leader in the European roof tile industry (ranking first or second in France, Germany, Poland and South-East Europe) and establishing an overseas presence in South Korea and the United States.

Founded in 1992 as a result of a merger between two Bavarian family-run roof tile manufacturing companies, Creaton has established itself in Germany and Eastern Europe where it enjoys a high level of brand recognition in terms of the quality of its products and services. Also renowned for its capacity for innovation, it has developed a leading platform in the roof tile segment, occupying first place in both Germany and Poland and second place in South-East Europe. The group has 1,240 employees and 7 production plants in Germany, 3 in Poland and 1 in Hungary, as well as a roofing accessories factory and 4 regional warehouses.

The merger between the two dynamic companies with estimated 2020 pro-forma revenues of approximately 610 million euros will create significant operational and commercial synergies, driving sales in Italy, Benelux, Spain and other export countries thanks to a comprehensive range of innovative roofing solutions.

The acquisition is subject to approval and is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2021.

La combinazione delle due dinamiche realtà (circa 610 milioni di euro di ricavi pro-forma stimati per il 2020) produrrà importanti sinergie operative e commerciali, spingendo le vendite in Italia, Benelux, Spagna e altri paesi di esportazione, con una gamma completa e innovativa di soluzioni per le coperture.

Il perfezionamento dell’operazione è subordinato alle previste approvazioni e dovrebbe avvenire entro il primo trimestre 2021.

According to the latest Euroconstruct forecast, presented in Munich during the conference held on 24 November last year, the construction volume in the area is estimated to have slumped by 7.8% in 2020. This marks the second upward revision after the -11.5% forecast in June was updated to -9.1% in August.

to the fact that activities could continue relatively unhindered.

As for individual market segments, the civil engineering sector appears to be least affected by the pandemic. Expenditure on infrastructure fell by just 3.8% in 2020 and is expected to expand by 5.2% in 2021. The negative 2020 trend in non-residential construction (-9.2%) will be followed by growth of +2.5% in the current year, although this will not be sufficient to return to 2019 levels. Following the major losses in the residential segment (-8.6% in 2020), the market will regain significant momentum in 2021 with expected growth of 4.7%.

Due to the lockdowns imposed by numerous governments last spring, renovation projects were also brought to a halt, weakening renovation activities by 7.3%.

The assessment of the further development of construction activity in 2021 is based on the assumption that the economy in the Euroconstruct area will grow by 4.9% following the 8.0% contraction in 2020. The direct impact on the construction industry is expected to be much less severe than last spring as safety measures and digital working procedures should enable construction work to continue uninterruptedly. Overall, the uncertainties surrounding the evolution of the pandemic mean it is still not possible to make firm predictions for the coming months. Indirect negative effects of the pandemic, such as rising unemployment, falls in turnover and tax losses, will also have to be taken into account, but much will depend on how well the government relief and stimulus programmes work.

In this fragile and uncertain scenario, however, it seems plausible to assume that positive factors such as the need for housing in urban regions, energy renewal and modernisation of infrastructure will give the construction industry a fresh boost in the medium term.

Per quanto riguarda i singoli segmenti di mercato, il settore dell’ingegneria civile risulta essere il meno interessato dalle turbolenze della pandemia. Nel 2020, la spesa per le infrastrutture è diminuita solo del 3,8% e aumenterà del 5,2% nel 2021.

Negativo invece il trend 2020 delle costruzioni non residenziali (-9.2%) che lascia però intravedere una crescita nell’anno in corso pari al +2,5% non ancora sufficiente, tuttavia, a rientrare nei livelli 2019.

Dopo la forte perdita del comparto residenziale (-8,6% nel 2020), il mercato riprenderà slancio nel 2021 con un incremento stimato del 4,7%.

A causa del lockdown dei cantieri imposto da molti Governi nella scorsa Primavera, anche i progetti di ristrutturazione hanno subito una battuta d’arresto, con ripercussioni negative pari al -7,3%.

Le valutazioni sugli sviluppi delle attività di costruzioni nel 2021, si basano sull’ipotesi che l’economia nell’area Euroconstruct crescerà del 4,9% a fronte del calo so-

stenuto dell’8% nel 2020. L’impatto diretto della crisi sul settore si profila molto meno grave rispetto alla scorsa Primavera: le misure di sicurezza e i sistemi digitali dovrebbero assicurare la prosecuzione delle attività senza interruzioni.

Nel complesso, le incertezze legate all’evoluzione della pandemia non consentono ancora di delineare un quadro chiaro per i prossimi mesi.

Dovranno infatti essere presi inconsiderazione anche gli effetti negativi indiretti che si faranno presto sentire come l’aumento della disoccupazione, cali di fatturato e perdite fiscali, ma molto dipenderà dall’efficacia dei programmi di supporto e incentivi da parte dei vari Governi.

In questo scenario fragile e incerto, appare però plausibile avanzare l’ipotesi, a medio termine, che fattori positivi come la necessità di alloggi nelle regioni urbane, il rinnovamento energetico e l’ammodernamento delle infrastrutture, diano una nuova spinta all’industria delle costruzioni.

Against a global backdrop dominated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent economic crisis, the leading international building solutions provider Wienerberger Group delivered a highly satisfactory set of results in 2020. Group revenues totalled 3.4 billion euros (-3%), almost matching the previous year’s record level of 3.5 billion euros. The substantial stability of sales in such a challenging year represents a major success for the Austrian group, which has once again demonstrated its financial solidity based on a clear business model and well-defined strategies. The excellent performance recorded in the second half of the year generated an EBITDA of 566 million euros (compared to 594 million euros in 2019), well above the target of 545 million euros.

The net result was adversely affected by the contraction in the first quarter of 2020, dropping to 89 million euros compared to the 249 million euros of 2019. Throughout the period, Wienerberger also concentrated on transforming and optimising its product portfolio by integrating smart solutions and systems. ❱ Wienerberger Building Solutions in line with 2019 Despite the restrictions, the Wienerberger Building Solutions division (62% of total sales) generated revenues of 2.1 billion euros (2.2 billion euros in 2019) while EBITDA reached 414 million euros (-9%). Sales, especially in the building renovation and infrastructure segments, picked up again during the summer months.

Additional measures aimed at improving efficiency, raising prices, implementing strict cost management and introducing new digital solutions contributed significantly to the performance of the business unit. Most Western European markets stabilised at slightly lower levels than in 2019 due to government-imposed lockdowns (the UK and France were the worst affected countries).

Construction activities resumed in mid-June and the effective measures adopted in anticipation of the restart enabled the group to fully meet the stronger than expected demand in the second half of the year. Despite the recovery, however, the group was unable to make up for the losses incurred in the first half of the year.

In Belgium and the Netherlands business continued at a reduced level, while the growth in demand for roofing solutions led to higher profits.

Business activities in Germany and in the northern European façade solutions markets were the least affected by the restrictions, allowing production to continue without interruption.

Most plants in Central and Eastern Europe remained in operation, leading to excellent results in Austria, stable levels of sales in the Czech Republic and a satisfactory performance in Romania, while Poland and Hungary saw a slight decline in

Le attività di costruzione sono riprese a metà giugno e, grazie alle efficaci misure adottate per la ripartenza, il gruppo è riuscito a soddisfare pienamente la domanda rivelatasi più forte del previsto nella seconda metà dell’anno.

Nonostante il recupero, non è stato tuttavia possibile compensare le perdite subite nel primo semestre. In Belgio e nei Paesi Bassi l’attività è continuata seppur a livelli ridotti, registrando un aumento della domanda delle soluzioni per i tetti che ha prodotto un aumento degli utili.

Le attività in Germania e nei mercati del facciavista in Nord Europa sono state le meno colpite dalle restrizioni, pertanto il gruppo è riuscito a proseguire la produzione senza interruzioni.

In Europa centro-orientale la maggior parte degli impianti sono rimasti in funzione: ottimi i risultati in Austria, stabili le vendite in Repubblica Ceca, soddisfacenti in Romania, mentre in Polonia e Ungheria si è registra-

The medium-term sentiment for Wienerberger Building Solutions is positive: the pandemic is fuelling a strong desire for space and sustainable housing, and our innovative solutions will be of great help for the development of this sector.” ❱ The other business units are also robust Thanks to its strict cost management, Wienerberger Piping Solutions (28% of revenue) closed the year with a high level of profitability, reporting an EBITDA of 104 million euros (+4%), while revenue fell slightly by 3% to 933 million euros (959.4 million euros in 2019). This business unit likewise saw a recovery in all markets in the summer months. In the 2021 financial year, the group will focus on restructuring its product portfolio and optimising its operations: low-margin companies will be closed down or sold, while higher-margin companies will be further expanded.

The North America Business Unit also achieved satisfactory results (10% of revenues) with a 3% decline in sales to 325 million euros but double-digit (23%) growth in EBITDA to 48 million euros. In June, the business unit saw a strong recovery in both the US and Canada, with demand returning to prior-year levels. With the recent acquisition of Meridian Brick, the group has further strengthened its position in the North American market as the number one producer of façade solutions in the region.

❱ More balanced investments but with a focus on growth In 2020, Wienerberger invested a total of 211.6 million euros (303.3 million euros in 2019), divided up as follows: 75.2 million for expansions, plant improvements and new product development; 10.5 million euros (47.9 million euros in 2019) for M&As; and 125.9 million for maintenance. Net of acquisitions, 135.5 million euros was absorbed by Wienerberger Building Solutions (-23%), 55.2 million euros by the Piping Solutions business unit (-5%) and 10.4 million euros by the North America business unit (-53%). ❱ Focus on sustainability In 2021, Wienerberger will continue to advance its growth strategy based on sustainable development for the benefit of the environment and the community. “We are determined to contribute significantly to the improvement of people’s quality of life and the protection of the environment, and we will make the necessary investments to this end,” said Scheuch.

Priorities include projects and investments aimed at saving resources through the digitalization of processes and the introduction of smart solutions in the fields of water and energy management, as well as the development of high energy-efficiency solutions.

Wienerberger will also step up its efforts aimed at decarbonizing production and its product portfolio, promoting the circular economy, and preserving biodiversity within the framework of its Strategy 2023 (2023 ESG targets). By 2023, the Group’s CO2 emissions will be reduced by 15% compared to 2020.

Likewise, all new products are to be designed to make them 100% recyclable or reusable. ❱ Outlook for 2021 “The challenging 2020 business year demonstrated that we are on the right course. Given our significant cash flow and low debt, we are perfectly positioned to achieve our goals,” stated Heimo Scheuch.

For 2021, the company will continue to focus on operational excellence, organic growth through innovation, external growth through M&As and substantial improvements in sustainability. Ongoing operations to optimise and expand the product portfolio will result in an increase in profitability, while the company is committed to covering cost inflation with price increases. “In some markets this will, however, only be possible with a certain time lag. Hence we expect a negative impact on earnings of up to 20 million euros in 2021,” commented Scheuch.

Wienerberger has an impressive 2021 investment plan, with 120 million euros earmarked for maintenance of industrial platforms and from 140 to 160 million euros for growth projects.

Allo stesso modo, tutti i nuovi prodotti saranno progettati per renderli riciclabili o riutilizzabili al 100%. ❱ Outlook sul 2021 “Il difficile anno 2020 ha dimostrato che la strada intrapresa è quella giusta. Considerato il significativo flusso di cassa e il basso indebitamento, siamo perfettamente posizionati per raggiungere gli obiettivi prefissati - ha concluso Heimo Scheuch.

Per il 2021 l'attenzione dell'azienda è rivolta all’eccellenza operativa, sviluppo organico attraverso l'innovazione, crescita esterna tramite M&A e sui miglioramenti sostanziali nel campo della sostenibilità.

Le operazioni in corso per ottimizzare e ampliare il portafoglio prodotti si tradurranno in un aumento della redditività, mentre un prevedibile incremento dei prezzi di vendita andrà a controbilanciare l’aumento dell’inflazione dei costi, una misura che, secondo il CEO, “in alcuni mercati sarà attuabile solo in un certo lasso di tempo, motivo per cui ci aspettiamo un impatto negativo sugli utili 2021 di circa 20 milioni di euro”.

Wienerberger is also targeting further selective acquisitions like that of Meridian Brick, which was recently completed in the United States. ❱ Leader in the USA with the acquisition of Meridian Brick The agreement with Boral America for the acquisition of Meridian Brick was signed on 18 December for a value of US $250 million. Georgia-based Meridian Brick is the largest manufacturer of clay façade solutions by capacity in the USA and has a strong position in Canada.

Its product portfolio includes innovative systems for the building envelope for residential and commercial applications, including renovation. With more than 1,000 employees operating in 20 manufacturing plants across the USA and Canada, Meridian Brick generated revenues in excess of $400 million in the financial year to June 30, 2020.

The synergies created through the acquisition will double the US business unit’s revenues to more than $800 million, with EBITDA expected to exceed $120 million by 2023. Customers will gain access to an even greater range of building solutions with a strong focus on sustainability.

This acquisition marks a significant step in Wienerberger’s value-driven growth strategy and will establish the Group as the North American leader for innovative and sustainable masonry solutions. It further increases Wienerberger’s ability to benefit from strong demand in both the new build and renovation segments and extends its geographical footprint to Texas, the largest brick consuming state in the USA, and adds a local presence in highly attractive metropolitan regions.

Italian construction industry eyes possible rebound in 2021 Costruzioni Italia: possibile rimbalzo nel 2021

The Italian economy had already been experiencing a prolonged period of weakness when the Covid-19 crisis struck.

Following the gradual acceleration in GDP in 2015-2017, the recovery slackened significantly and gave way to a period of virtual stagnation. Most industrial sectors were badly hit, including the construction sector which was already in serious difficulty. The pandemic effectively put an end to the timid signs of recovery and further compounded the difficulties experienced by an industry that had never entirely recovered from the 2008 crisis. The fact that production levels were 35% lower in 2019 than in 2008 shows that there is still a big gap to be made up compared to 12 years ago. The forecasts issued for 2020 by the Italian National Building Contractors’ Association ANCE reveal a 10.1% decline in construction investments in real terms compared to the previous year, equivalent to a value of 118.3 billion euros. This contraction is largely attributable to the fact that more than 68% of building work came to a standstill during March and April 2020.

The overall picture presented in the latest edition of the ANCE Monitor published in February 2021 reveals an equally critical situation in the residential, commercial and non-residential building segments. Another significant factor is the decline in building permits, which fell in the first six months of 2020 by 13.6% for new housing and 39% for non-residential construction.

La crisi determinata dall’emergenza sanitaria ha investito l’economia italiana in una fase caratterizzata già da una prolungata debolezza: dopo la graduale accelerazione del triennio 2015-2017, la ripresa del Pil si era infatti molto affievolita, lasciando il passo a un andamento pressoché stagnante dell’attività. Le ripercussioni si sono fatte sentire pesantemente sulla maggior parte dei settori industriali, compresso quello delle costruzioni che già presentava non poche criticità. Di fatto la pandemia ne ha bloccato i timidi segnali di ripresa buttando “benzina sul fuoco”, ovvero su un comparto già gravemente colpito da una crisi iniziata nel 2008 e mai pienamente finita. Rispetto a 12 anni fa rimane infatti ampio il gap da colmare: -35% i livelli produttivi dal 2008

al 2019. La stima formulata dall’Associazione Nazionale dei Costruttori Edili (ANCE) per il 2020 è di una flessione degli investimenti in costruzioni del 10,1% in termini reali rispetto all’anno precedente, per un valore di 118,3 miliardi di euro. Il calo è da imputare soprattutto al blocco di oltre il 68% delle attività durante il mese di marzo e aprile 2020.

Il quadro complessivo delineato nell’ultima edizione dell’Osservatorio ANCE pubblicata a febbraio 2021, evidenzia una situazione ugualmente critica sia per l’edilizia abitativa, sia per quella commerciale e non-residenziale. A questo si aggiunge il crollo dei permessi di costruire, diminuiti nei primi sei mesi 2020 del 13,6% per le nuove abitazioni e del 39% per l’edilizia non residenziale.

❱ The recovery of the residential sector driven by the 110% Superbonus tax incentives The ANCE forecast for investments in new homes points to a 12.5% decrease in real terms compared to 2019, equivalent to 15.2 billion euros.

This decrease, which marks the end of a positive trend that began in 2017, is the combined result of two different effects: the gradual recovery in production activity during the second half of the year alongside a continued attitude of uncertainty and caution towards new investments, especially on the part of households. Investments in the renovation of housing stock, which sustained the market through the years of crisis and now account for approximately 37% of the total value of construction investments, suffered their first contraction,

This measure is seen as crucial for the sector and may lead to a significant rebound in 2021. No fewer than 40% of companies say they already have Superbonus-related projects on their order books and these are expected to bring an approximately 10% boost in turnover next year. ❱ In the non-residential segment the private sector has been worst hit by the crisis Investments in the non-residential construction sector amounted to 59.8 billion euros, down 9.6% on 2019 and marking the end of the positive trend that had been in progress since 2016.

According to ANCE figures, the biggest contractions have been seen in the private sector (-13.5%), where offices, retail, tourism and restaurants appear to have dragged the sector into a deep crisis. ANCE’s estimates for public works suggest a less severe decline (-2.5%). This figure takes account of the contraction in production levels both in ongoing projects and in new work due to be undertaken following the pandemic. ❱ 2021 may bring the long-awaited change of course If the construction industry is able to exploit the various opportunities offered by the market, the current year may bring a significant recovery, leading to an 8.6% increase in construction investments. This is expected to have a total economic impact of around 36 billion euros, or approximately 2 percentage points of GDP. These opportunities include firstly the 110% Superbonus incentives, which may bring a +14%

This forecast takes account of the increase in production levels attributable to the first projects benefiting from the 110% tax incentive introduced in July 2020 as well as projects aimed at reducing seismic risk covered by the “seismic-eco bonus” for entire apartment blocks (Budget Law 2020) and the extension of the so-called “façade bonus”. The forecasts for investment in new residential building are for a very modest rebound in production levels (+3.5% compared to 2020), while the growth estimates for non-residential private building stand at around +5%. The ANCE forecast for the public works sector in 2021 is for a 7.7% increase compared to 2020. ❱ The (positive) updated forecasts from Cresme for 2020/2021 Cresme is reporting a number of even more reassuring signals. Based on the results announced by the building materials companies, 2021 got off to a positive start with a significant increase in sales compared to January 2020. The Cresme/CLab monthly index reports growth of +12.7%. In detail, the results for 2020 have been revised up to -8.5% compared to the fullyear figure reported in January of -10%. The outlook for 2021 has also improved with growth now forecast at +9.5% (up from +9% in January) due to the expected impact of the 110% Superbonus incentive.

Con riferimento agli investimenti nella nuova edilizia abitativa, la previsione è di un rimbalzo molto contenuto dei livelli produttivi (+3,5% rispetto al 2020), mentre per il non

residenziale privato le stime di crescita si aggirano intorno al +5%. In merito al comparto delle opere pubbliche la stima ANCE per il 2021 è di un aumento del 7,7% sul 2020. ❱ Gli aggiornamenti (positivi) dal Cresme sul 2020/2021 Segnali ancora più confortanti arrivano dal Cresme.

Sulla base dei risultati evidenziati dalle aziende produttrici di materiali per l’edilizia, l’inizio del 2021 è stato nel complesso positivo e, nel confronto con gennaio 2020 l’andamento delle vendite è cresciuto significativamente. L’indicatore sintetico mensile Cresme/ CLab registra infatti una crescita del +12,7%. Nel dettaglio, la flessione per il 2020 è rivista in positivo, al -8,5%, quando a gennaio l’indicazione per l’intero anno era stata del -10%. The year 2020 was extremely difficult for the U.S. economy, which was devastated by the COVID-19 health crisis. While some segments of the economy remained healthy, the pandemic’s impact sent U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) to a 3.5% decrease from the previous year (Bureau of Economic Analysis). These factors, along with record low inventory levels, also impacted affordability for potential homebuyers, as last year the median new home sales price reached a record high of $334,000. The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate was 3.11% last year, down from 3.94% in 2019 and the lowest annual rate on record.

Aided by a government moratorium on foreclosures last year due to the pandemic, foreclosure filings, a key inverse indicator of the residential market’s health, declined to their lowest level since tracking began. The 214,000 filings (0.16% of all U.S. housing units) recorded in 2020 represented a 56.5% drop from the previous year. However, with the moratorium scheduled to expire at the end of June 2021, unless there is an extension, foreclosures will likely pick up in the second half of the year, as lenders begin working through the backlog.

Grazie anche alla moratoria applicata l’anno scorso dal Governo, il numero dei pignoramenti, altro indicatore del buono stato di salute del settore residenziale, ha toccato il minimo storico dall’inizio della loro rilevazione: 214.000 i casi registrati nel 2020 (lo 0,16% del totale delle unità abitative statunitensi), scesi del 56,5% rispetto all'anno precedente.

Tuttavia, con la scadenza della moratoria prevista a giugno 2021 (salvo estensioni), è pro-

babile che il numero dei pignoramenti riprenda a salire nella seconda metà dell’anno con effetto retroattivo.

Sostenuti dalla forte spinta del mercato residenziale, nel 2020 gli investimenti totali in costruzioni (residenziale e non residenziale pubblico e privato) sono aumentati per il nono anno consecutivo toccando il loro massimo storico: 1,43 trilioni di dollari con un incremento del 4,7% sul 2019.

Brick is Back!

The exterior wall material is making a return After years of decline, the use of clay brick as an exterior wall material for single-family detached homes is seeing a comeback in the United States and is gaining popularity amongst both builders and homebuyers. This was confirmed by the 2020 Annual Builder Practices Survey conducted by Home Innovation Research Labs for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), the association representing 26 US brick producers (more than 70% of all companies in the sector).

However, the survey of more than 200 builders conducted last December found that larger builders are more inclined to use brick than their smaller counterparts.

For builders who complete more than 51 homes a year, 42% say they have used brick more often in the last 3 years, while the percentage is slightly smaller (35%) for those who build 11 to 50 homes a year. But only two out of ten smaller builders (those constructing 10 or fewer homes a year) reported an increase in the use of brick. According to the survey, brick is

La rivincita del mattone facciavista Dopo anni di flessione, negli Stati Uniti il mattone facciavista in laterizio per il rivestimento esterno di abitazioni monofamiliari torna ad essere un’opzione allettante, sempre più considerata dai costruttori edili e dai loro committenti. Lo conferma l’Home Innovation Research Labs nell’edizione 2020 del Builder Practices Reports, la ricerca di mercato realizzata per la Brick Industry Association (BIA), l’associazione che riunisce 26 produttori statunitensi di mattoni, ossia oltre il 70% delle aziende del comparto. Dai risultati dello studio, condotto lo scorso dicembre su oltre 200 imprese di costruzione, emerge tuttavia una diversa propensione all’impiego dei brick, che pare direttamente proporzionale alla dimensione delle imprese edili.

Nella fascia di imprese che realizzano oltre 51 nuove case l’anno, il 42% ha dichiarato di aver aumentato l’uso di mattoni negli ultimi 3 anni; percentuale di poco inferiore (il 35%) tra i costruttori che realizzano tra le 11 e le 50 case all’anno. Al contrario, tra le imprese edili più piccole, con volumi inferiori alle 10 case l’anno, solo due su dieci hanno fatto maggior ricorso al facciavista. Secondo la ricerca, il mattone torna ad essere ‘appealing’ (e tale dovrebbe con-

perceived as an aesthetically pleasing, high quality, and safe material and its usage is likely to continue its upward trajectory. There are several reasons for this.

For builders who reported an increase in usage, the top driver was the aesthetic of brick (45% of respondents), followed by specific requests on the part of homebuyers (40%). Other factors included durability and a more favourable cost compared to alternative materials such as stucco or stone.

A key factor in the decision to use brick is the knowledge that brick houses are healthier, safer and more energy-efficient, making them higher quality properties that are easier to sell.

The study findings point to a potentially strong future for clay brick in the United States. Homebuying behaviour in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic is shifting the market towards the luxury home segment consisting of larger, better-appointed homes and consequently greater use of brick.

Another factor is land availability.

With developable land in increasingly short supply, building lots in older neighbourhoods continue to make up a larger proportion of new homes (infill lots and teardowns).

In these neighbourhoods, there is a preference for traditional architectural styles which tend to favour brick over other materials.

Determinante nella scelta di impiego del mattone è la consapevolezza che le case rivestite con mattoni sono anche più salubri, sicure ed energeticamente più efficienti, sono quindi immobili di maggiore qualità e di conseguenza più facilmente vendibili. Per il mattone in la-

terizio si delinea quindi un futuro potenzialmente molto promettente negli Stati Uniti, spinto peraltro anche da un diverso orientamento degli acquirenti che, sull’onda della pandemia Covid-19, sta spostando il mercato verso il segmento ‘luxury’, ossia case più grandi, ben rifinite e sempre più spesso rivestite di mattoni.

Un altro elemento a favore di un prossimo maggior impiego di laterizio è legato alla minore disponibilità di nuovi terreni edificabili, per cui l’edilizia residenziale interesserà sempre più quartieri storici delle città (con demolizioni e ricostruzioni o ristrutturazioni), nei quali si prediligerà il mantenimento di stili architettonici tradizionali, per lo più incentrati sul laterizio.

Some companies have continued to grow despite the pandemic. One example is Industrias Chirino, an Argentine company founded in 1981 as a producer of pre-stressed concrete which branched into its current core business of brick production in 2000. It has a modern production plant located in Mendoza, 80 employees, a strong spirit of innovation and above all a keen environment awareness, an area in which it has great expectations for the future.

Its latest new products are aimed at the sector of sustainable building, a fast-growing segment that is receiving a boost from government incentives.

The company also devotes a lot of attention to its production plant. “We have a long tradition of environmental awareness and in 2013 put our ideas into practice by adopting Italian technology (automation and latest-generation kilns), which

has enabled us to triple production and cut energy consumption by 50%,” explained Luis Chirino, executive director of Industrias Chirino.

The company was forced to suspend operations in early 2020 due to the lockdown, but resumed production at full capacity in May driven by the surge in demand for building materials. As a result, it decided to invest in new technology and expand its production capacity by 30%.

The company’s goal for 2021 is to establish its products as the most cost effective and eco-efficient building solutions on the market, thereby contributing to the diffusion of green building practices throughout the country.

BWR: 2020 was a very tough year for the entire manufacturing industry. How did you respond to the emergency and what operational changes did you make?

LUIS CHIRINO: Let’s say it was a different year that taught us to think differently. During the five-month stoppage, we discussed alternative solutions and action plans.

On resuming operations, we implemented strict health protocols and a staff rotation scheme to ensure that we always had substitutes for the most critical production line positions.

These measures not only proved successful, but they also gave us a foretaste of a new, more efficient and productive way of working which we plan to adopt in the future.

Per questa ragione la società si è attivata per investire in nuova tecnologia ed espandere del 30% la propria capacità produttiva.

L'obiettivo per il 2021 è quello di posizionarsi come la migliore alternativa per costruire sia dal punto di vista economico, sia in termini di eco-efficienza per promuovere e sostenere la bioedilizia nel Paese.

BWR: Il 2020 è stato un anno

durissimo per tutta l’industria manifatturiera. Come avete reagito all’emergenza dal punto di vista operativo e come è cambiato il modo di lavorare?

LUIS CHIRINO: È stato un anno “differente” che ci ha insegnato a pensare “differente”.

Durante lo stop, durato 5 mesi, ci siamo confrontati cercando soluzioni e piani di intervento alternativi. Alla ripresa dell’attività abbiamo implementato rigorosi protocolli sanitari e uno schema di rotazione del personale in modo da avere sempre delle “riserve” nelle posizioni più critiche della linea di produzione.

Ebbene, queste misure non solo hanno avuto successo, ma ci hanno fatto intravedere un nuovo modo di lavorare, più efficiente e produttivo, che pensiamo di adottare anche in futuro.

BWR: How has the pandemic affected your business?

L. CHIRINO: It may seem paradoxical, but as of mid-May 2020 we have gained share in the domestic market and begun producing at full installed capacity. In these uncertain times, Argentine consumers see investment in their homes as the safest place for their savings, which is why demand for building materials has grown so strongly.

This trend has led to a surge in demand for our products given that 1 square metre of load-bearing perforated brick costs 30% less than solid brick, making our products the cheapest building solution on the market. Further benefits of perforated bricks include the shorter installation times (reduced almost by half) and the 35% energy savings for the end user.

This prompted us to take a gamble with the launch of Doble Muro and to invest in new technology.

BWR: Could you tell us about the technology you have chosen to install?

L. CHIRINO: It is an upgrade to the drying process, which is currently the bottleneck in our production line, and involves the addition of a new drying tunnel (bringing the total to 4 tunnel). We also plan to install special automations to optimise dry material unloading times.

The 1.5 million euro investment will enable us to increase production at the Mendoza plant by 30% as of June 2021, reaching 23,500 tonnes/month. We are very proud of this achievement, which demonstrates the enormous progress we have made. We produced 3,000 tonnes per month in the period 2000-2005, then 5,000 tonnes per month between 2006 and 2013, and 16,500 tonnes per month between 2013 and 2020.

BWR: An increase of 7,000 tonnes/month. But will demand continue to grow in 2021?

L. CHIRINO: The outlook for the current year remains favourable. The cost in dollars per square metre has fallen significantly, encouraging small and large investors to resume construction projects that had been suspended during the lockdown. Demand for bricks in Argentina now exceeds installed production capacity and we believe this trend will continue at least over the medium term.

The future looks very promising for all 17 brick producers in the country, who together meet 95% of demand and are supported by the national trade association CICER.

BWR: Che ripercussioni ha avuto la pandemia sul vostro business?

Per il consumatore argentino, in questi tempi di incertezza, l’investimento sulla casa è diventato il posto più sicuro dove veicolare i propri risparmi, ragion per cui la domanda di materiali da costruzione è cresciuta in modo importante. La tendenza ha dato forza ai nostri prodotti poiché 1mq di mattone forato portante costa il 30% in meno rispetto al mattone pieno, il che significa che siamo l’alternativa più economica per costruire. I benefici generati dal mattone forato si estendono anche ai tempi di posa, praticamente dimezzati, oltre a un risparmio energetico del 35% per l’utente finale. Da qui è partita la nostra scommessa, con il lancio di Doble Muro e la pianificazione dell’investimento in nuova tecnologia.

BWR: Può descriverci il progetto tecnologico che andrete a implementare?

L. CHIRINO: Si tratta di un ammodernamento del processo di essiccazione, oggi il nostro col-

lo di bottiglia. Consiste nell’aggiunta di un tunnel di essiccazione ai tre già esistenti, arrivando così a 4 tunnel. Installeremo inoltre speciali automatismi per ottimizzare i tempi di scarico del materiale secco.

L’investimento, pari a 1,5 milioni di euro, consentirà di aumentare la produzione del 30% nello stabilimento di Mendoza a partire da giugno 2021, arrivando a raggiungere le 23.500 tonnellate/mese. Un traguardo di cui andiamo molto orgogliosi e che dimostra concretamente la nostra evoluzione: nel periodo 2000-2005 producevamo 3.000 ton/mese, passati poi a 5.000 tra il 2006 e il 2013 e a 16.500 tonnellate tra il 2013 e 2020.

BWR: Un salto di 7.000 tonnellate/mese, ma la domanda continuerà a crescere anche nel 2021?

L. CHIRINO: Le previsioni sono favorevoli anche per l’anno in corso. Il costo in dollari per metro quadrato è diminuito significativamente e questo ha spinto piccoli e grandi investitori a riattivare i progetti edilizi rimasti fermi durante il lockdown. La domanda di mattoni in Argentina oggi supera la capacità di produzione installata e riteniamo che questa tendenza continuerà almeno nel medio periodo. Vediamo dunque un futuro molto promettente per tutti i 17 produttori di laterizi attivi in Argentina che, complessi-

BWR: Do you export any of your products?

L. CHIRINO: No, we are entirely focused on the domestic market. 50% of our sales are split evenly between Mendoza and San Juan, while the other 50% is increasingly spread out across the country following the recent surge in demand.

As a result, our traditional markets of San Luis, Córdoba and La Rioja have been extended to the provinces of Chaco, Corrientes, Buenos Aires and Southern Argentina.

BWR: The recent launch of Doble Muro is one of your green projects, but you have a much broader vision of sustainability.

L. CHIRINO: That’s right. Our goal is to become one of the few 100% sustainable producers in the world.

The construction sector should no longer be seen purely as an economic activity, but should also include a vision of social well-being and care for the environment. We believe this must be reflected in terms of both products and production plant, which we have chosen for their energy and water savings, recovery of heat generated in the firing process, etc.

Our raw material originates from river sediments and is obtained from watercourses clearing operations, so it is completely natural. We have completely revamped our product range and now offer very lightweight thermal bricks capable of minimising energy consumption in the home while significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

One example is the recent launch of the Doble Muro line with dimensions 18x18x33 cm. It is a wall brick with a special design that provides twofold protection against heat and cold and allows for energy savings of up to 60%.

BWR: Avete anche qualche quota di export?

L. CHIRINO: Proprio così. Il nostro obiettivo è diventare una delle poche fabbriche al mondo 100% sostenibili. Il settore edile non deve esser più concepi-

to come una mera attività economica, ma deve comprendere il benessere sociale e la cura dell’ambiente. Per quanto ci riguarda, non solo i prodotti ma anche gli impianti sono stati scelti per fare la loro parte in quest’ottica: risparmio energetico, idrico, recupero del calore generato dalla cottura ecc....

La nostra materia prima, proveniente da sedimenti pluviali, è ottenuta tramite la pulizia dei corsi d’acqua, quindi del tutto naturale.

Oggi la nostra gamma prodotti è stata completamente rinnovata e offre mattoni termici molto leggeri, in grado di minimizzare il consumo di energia nelle abitazioni, diminuendo sensibilmente l’impronta di carbonio.

In questa direzione va il recentissimo lancio della linea Doble Muro, appunto, con dimensioni 18x18x33 cm. Si tratta di una parete che, proprio per il suo particolare design, forma una doppia protezione dal caldo e dal freddo, consentendo

similar thermal qualities and anti-seismic performance. Both have achieved a thermal insulation of below 0.95 kW/m2K with weights of 6.5 kg and 7.3 kg respectively. This makes them the lightest and most heat-efficient bricks on the Argentine market.

Another important aspect is the fact that perforated clay bricks are 100% recyclable. Once crushed, they can be transformed into by-products that can be used for decorative purposes on walkways in parks and public areas, while the clay dust can be reintroduced into the raw material supply, contributing to the production of new products as part of a virtuous closed loop.

Our bricks contain 10% recycled material and we plan to increase this percentage in the future.

BWR: How important are energy efficiency and sustainability in the Argentine construction industry?

L. CHIRINO: The Argentine government is promoting sustainable construction by offering significant benefits (such as more building space) to projects that opt to use eco-efficient materials. Certifications are also being introduced to differentiate thermally efficient housing units and enable owners to obtain tax benefits.

BWR: How would you describe your company?

L. CHIRINO: A company that offers cutting-edge solutions for sustainable building. What we really want to demonstrate is that clay brick continues to be the best building product in terms of its evolving technical, performance and design characteristics. Our company is committed to research, so we offer innovative solutions and promote an environmentally friendly culture. This is certainly our biggest strength. The building industry in Argentina is heading in a very similar direction to that of the European Union and is beginning to look for more advanced materials, especially in terms of thermal insulation.

Alongside our products, we also offer a dedicated customer service that focuses directly on needs but also provides support by proposing the most suitable and efficient solution.

BWR: What is the current state of your plants in terms of automation, quality and innovation?

L. CHIRINO: We use state-of-the-art Italian technology which we continue to update as our suppliers develop new versions.

un risparmio energetico fino al 60%. Allo stesso modo, il mattone da muro 18x19x33 cm, con vuoti verticali, offre qualità termiche simili e prestazioni antisismiche. Entrambi hanno ottenuto un isolamento termico inferiore a 0,95 Kw/m2K con 6,5 Kg e 7,3 Kg di peso rispettivamente. Questo li rende i mattoni più leggeri e termo-efficienti del mercato argentino.

Non dobbiamo inoltre dimenticare che i mattoni ceramici forati sono riciclabili al 100%.

Quando vengono frantumati, possono essere trasformati in sottoprodotti utilizzati poi con fini decorativi nei passaggi pedonali di parchi e aree pubbliche, mentre la polvere d’argilla può essere reintrodotta nella materia prima contribuendo a generare nuovi prodotti in un circolo virtuoso “closed loop”.

I nostri mattoni contengono il 10% di prodotti riciclati e per il futuro contiamo di aumentare la percentuale.

BWR: Efficienza energetica e sostenibilità quanto pesano nelle costruzioni in Argentina?

L. CHIRINO: Il Governo argentino sta promuovendo e appoggiando le costruzioni sostenibili, concedendo importanti vantaggi (ad esempio maggiore metratura edificabile) a chi sceglie di utilizzare materiali eco-efficienti. Sono in corso di implementazione an-

che le certificazioni che differenziano le unità abitative termo-efficienti dalle altre, con benefici fiscali per i proprietari.

BWR: Se doveste descrivervi, cosa direste di voi?

L. CHIRINO: Una realtà in grado di offrire soluzioni all’avanguardia per costruire in modo sostenibile. Ciò che ci preme dimostrare è che il mattone, nella sua evoluzione a livello di caratteristiche tecniche, prestazionali e di design, continua a essere la scelta migliore in edilizia. Siamo un’azienda che fa ricerca e, in quanto tale, la nostra proposta è innovativa e promuove una cultura ambientale. Questo è sicuramente il nostro punto di forza.

L’edilizia in Argentina sta prendendo una direzione molto simile a quella adottata dall’Unione Europea e comincia a richiedere materiali più avanzati, soprattutto in termini di isolamento termico. Accanto al prodotto offriamo un servizio al cliente molto specifico, che si concentra direttamente sulle necessità, ma che funge anche da supporto per suggerire la soluzione più idonea ed efficiente.

BWR: Qual è l’attuale livello di evoluzione dei vostri impianti in termini di automazione, qualità e innovazione?

L. CHIRINO: Utilizziamo tecnologia italiana di ultima generazione che continuiamo ad aggiornare in base agli sviluppi

interview there will only be room for companies capable of keeping in step with the latest frontiers of technology.

This is where we are concentrating our efforts. Our company is undergoing radical changes in terms of both internal structure and methodology. We are incorporating systems with an Industry 4.0 approach that will enable us to manage all operational activities in a coordinated manner, from raw materials through to marketing. We have implemented software to facilitate communication between our various departments (production, administration and sales), making information available to everyone in real time to ensure more efficient business management. Another important project is to develop a marketplace for selling our products online, simplifying the purchasing process and providing a better service to our customers.

BWR: The choice of technology partners makes all the difference in the success of a technology project. Who are your suppliers?

L. CHIRINO: Our main suppliers include Tecnofiliere, Omega, Marcheluzzo and Bedeschi. Integration between these companies’ expertise has produced outstanding synergies and results. In 2013, about a week after the start-up of the kiln and the new line they were already producing the requested quantities at full capacity with a quality that far exceeded the expectations of our technical team. La nostra azienda sta affrontando dei cambiamenti radicali non solo a livello di struttura interna, ma anche di metodologia, incorporando sistemi con approccio 4.0 che ci permetteranno di gestire in modo coordinato tutta la nostra attività, dalla materia prima fino alla commercializzazione del prodotto.

Abbiamo infatti implementato un software che permette l’interconnessione tra le diverse aree (produzione, amministrazione e vendita) in modo che le informazioni siano rese fruibili a tutti in tempo reale, per una gestione più efficiente dell’attività. Un altro progetto importante riguarda lo sviluppo di un market place che ci permetterà di commercializzare i nostri prodotti attraverso il sito web, semplificando il processo di acquisto e fornendo un servizio migliore ai nostri clienti.

filiere, Omega, Marcheluzzo e Bedeschi. L’integrazione delle competenze di queste realtà ha prodotto sinergie ottimali con risultati eccellenti. Nel 2013, dopo circa una settimana dall’avvio del forno e della nuova linea, stavano già producendo a pieno regime i quantitativi richiesti con una qualità che ha superato ampiamente le aspettative del nostro team tecnico. Per quanto riguarda la parte estrusione, vorrei esprimere il mio personale ringraziamento a Tecnofiliere che ci ha sempre seguito con impegno e professionalità, adattando con criterio la sua tecnologia alla materia prima e all’impianto in uso. BWR: L’attuale congiuntura non vi preoccupa?

L. CHIRINO: Al momento siamo ben posizionati, con molti vantaggi competitivi che ci infondono fiducia e ottimismo.

The emergence of Covid-19 in the early months of 2020 did little to stop the plans of Forterra, one of the UK’s largest brick producers. The British giant, which in 2019 launched a £95 million (almost €114 million) investment in a large manufacturing plant in Desford, has continued to give top priority to the project and has pressed on with construction work, determined to get the first bricks rolling off the new production line in 2022.

The new plant in Desford, Leicestershire will be Europe’s largest and most efficient brick factory, a model of efficiency and sustainability that will incorporate state-of-the-art processes to minimise the environmental impact of both the plant and its products. At the heart of the plant’s efficiency will be two new kilns using cutting-edge technology to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. To ensure there is no interruption in brick production, the new premises are being constructed alongside the existing factory, which will remain operational until the new plant is fully up and running. Forterra currently produces 85 million bricks per year, but this is set to more than double to 180 million when the new line begins

La comparsa del Covid-19 nei primi mesi del 2020 non ha arrestato i piani di Forterra, tra i maggiori produttori di mattoni del Regno Unito. Il colosso inglese, che nel 2019 aveva pianificato un investimento di 95 milioni di sterline (quasi 114 milioni di euro) per un mega impianto produttivo a Desford, ha mantenuto il progetto tra le sue priorità, continuando i lavori di costruzione, determinato a far uscire i primi mattoni già nel 2022.

production. That’s enough bricks to build 24,000 average family-sized homes. This will increase the group’s capacity by 16% to a total of 700 million bricks per year.

For this giant project, the London Stock Exchange-listed company chose Bedeschi as the sole supplier for the turnkey plant. The scope of supply will cover all stages of the production process, from clay preparation to extrusion, drying, firing, transport, automation and final packaging.

The new site will produce British standard facing bricks in a wide range of colours and surface treatments (sandblasting, rustication, dragface, etc.).

The wide variety of textures and colours will offer unlimited potential for both traditional and contemporary finishes in perfect harmony with the urban context.

As this highly complex project required expertise in all areas of the production process and extensive experience in the sector, Forterra conducted a detailed preliminary assessment in order to choose a technology supplier. With its more than one hundred years of history, Bedeschi was immediately identified as a suitable candidate. Another example is the line for producing prefabricated walls, which are subsequently transported and assembled directly on site. The Forterra plant will be no exception and will be equipped with innovative systems to reduce material changeover times and integrated supervision and maintenance management solutions. ❱ Forterra’s green commitment “I believe that now more than ever is the right time to increase our ambitions and accelerate our progress on sustainability. Our three sustainability pillars of People, Planet and Product will guide our future decision making, and I have recently commissioned specific task-force groups focused on key priorities of renewable energy investment, carbon emissions, and plastic packaging reduction,” said Stephen Harrison, CEO of Forterra, when commenting on the group’s commitment to sustainability. “This year, we shall also begin the transitioning of our fleet cars to electric and hybrid – we have already installed charging stations at our Northampton office and will follow suit at other sites during the year.” The results of this green pledge speak for themselves: over the last 10 years (2010 to 2020), Forterra has reduced waste to landfill by 98%, carbon emissions by 27% (kg per ton), water consumption by 20% (litres per ton) and energy consumption by 5% (kWh per ton). Le nuove tecnologie assicurano una gestione integrata dei sistemi di produzione e controllo, un accesso remoto di tele manutenzione e/o teleassistenza, una verifica continua e puntuale dei parametri vitali della macchina, tutto inserito in un sistema automatico di programmazione delle manutenzioni ordinare e straordinarie.

Questa nuova opportunità di sviluppo fa sì che l’interconnessione tra cliente e fornitore sia ulteriormente potenziata con l’aggiunta di un servizio di problem solving tempestivo e puntuale.

Si è espresso così Stephen Harrison, CEO di Forterra nel manifestare l’impegno del gruppo sul fronte della sostenibilità.

“Quest’anno inizieremo anche il passaggio all’elettrico e all’ibrido di tutta la flotta delle auto aziendali: abbiamo già installato stazioni di ricarica presso la sede di Northampton e seguiremo l’esempio in altri siti nel corso dell’anno”.

Si potrebbe definire un patto “verde” per l’ambiente dove i risultati parlano chiaro. Negli ultimi 10 anni (dal 2010 al 2020) Forterra ha ridotto del 98% i rifiuti in discarica, del 27% le emissioni di carbonio (kg per ton), del 20% il consumo d’acqua (litri per ton) e del 5% il consumo energetico (Kwh per ton).

Impegnativi e ambiziosi anche i piani futuri: entro il 2030 Forterra ha annunciato l’azzeramento dei rifiuti e l’abbattimento del 33% di CO2 per la divisione laterizi.

Entro il 2025 il 10% dell’elettricità utilizzata sarà generata da fonti rinnovabili, il 10% del fatturato proverrà da prodotti sostenibili e gli imballaggi in plastica saranno ridotti del 50%.

Thousands of years have gone by since humans first began using clay as a primary material for the construction of monuments and dwellings. Clay building elements have been widely used ever since the earliest civilisations, and their production techniques have seen slow but steady development over the millennia. What were initially manual systems gradually underwent simple mechanisation, eventually leading to fullscale automation of production processes. Drying technology in particular has seen enormous progress. Long gone are the days when bricks and roof tiles were dried naturally in the air and the sun, with all the variability that this entails in terms of environmental conditions. But despite all the progress that has been made, it is important to remember that this is still the most complex stage of the production process and must be monitored very closely to ensure a high-quality finished product.

Sono trascorsi millenni da quando l’uomo ha iniziato a utilizzare l’argilla come elemento primario per la costruzione di monumenti e abitazioni. Sin dai tempi delle prime civiltà gli elementi da costruzione in argilla hanno trovato un ampio utilizzo e di conseguenza hanno potuto vivere una continua seppur lenta evoluzione nelle tecniche di produzione.

Si è infatti passati da sistemi prettamente manuali ad una meccanizzazione primaria, trasformatasi poi in seguito in automazione dei processi produttivi.

Per quanto riguarda l’essiccazione dei laterizi, la tecnologia ha compiuto enormi passi in avanti: molto tempo è passato da quando l’aria ed il sole fungevano da essiccatoio naturale con tutte le incognite legate

alle variazioni ambientali.

Nonostante i progressi, va però riconosciuto che tale fase di processo rimane senz’altro la più impegnativa e va monitorata con la massima attenzione perché da essa dipendono le sorti del prodotto finito. ❱ La metamorfosi dell’argilla Quando si parla di essiccazione di un prodotto in laterizio, vi sono più componenti che interagiscono tra loro, in primis la materia prima utilizzata (argilla), le modalità con cui si agisce sulla stessa per asciugarla e il tempo.

La materia prima possiede una struttura interna costituita da finissime particelle di forma lamellare distribuite in modo disordinato e tenute insieme da finissimi veli di acqua che ne conferiscono la plasticità.

❱ The metamorphosis of clay The clay product drying process is influenced by a number of interrelated factors, first and foremost the nature of the raw material and the drying method and duration.

The clay raw material has an internal structure made up of very fine lamellar particles distributed in a disorderly manner and held together by thin water films that give it plasticity.

This water content needs to be removed without subjecting the material to stress in order to ensure its integrity. After being formed, the piece is introduced into the dryers where it is heated in optimal conditions to allow for evaporation and ensure that the material has the correct residual water content upon exit. ❱ Creating the right drying conditions

Dobbiamo immaginare di far uscire quella percentuale di acqua senza creare tensioni sul materiale per garantirne l’integrità.

Una volta realizzato, il pezzo viene collocato negli essiccatoi che hanno il compito di creare quelle condizioni ottimali per riscaldare il prodotto, ridurre la resistenza dell’argilla all’evaporazione e quindi portare il materiale alle giuste percentuali di acqua residua in fase di scarico dagli essiccatoi.

❱ Creare le giuste condizioni di essiccazione Il processo di essiccazione è una fase molto delicata e ha una durata variabile in base alla percentuale di acqua presente nell’impasto e alle dimensioni dei pezzi. Nel corso degli anni, i processi di essiccazione sono diventati più rapidi, capaci quindi di asciugare nel minor tempo possibile grandi quantità di materiali, spesso a discapito di un ottimale trattamento termico con conseguenti difetti nel pez-

tional characteristics.

In addition to the shape and size of the pieces, another important factor in the drying process is the quality of the clay used, which must have specific characteristics in terms of particle size and fineness.

Various types of drying systems are available on the market, but all of them operate on the basis of the ratio between the quantity of air introduced into the drying chamber and the thermal energy it contains.

When we talk about creating the right drying conditions, this mainly refers to the cycle time (i.e. the length of time the products spend inside the dryer), the Bigot curves (i.e. the water loss expressed in grams per unit time) and the resulting shrinkage of the material. However, these aspects are often not sufficient and it is also necessary to create the right internal ventilation conditions using dedicated machines that take into account the quantity of air that needs to be moved, the pressure and the speed of the transiting airflow. The circulation of air inside the dryers is therefore a very important factor as it serves to transfer energy from one point to another and to reach the material undergoing drying with the maximum uniformity and homogeneity. The latest technologies developed by Marcheluzzo SpA are designed specifically to meet these needs and offer improved performance, greater energy efficiency and lower production costs. ❱ Adjusting the internal ventilation: different systems for different requirements Now as in the past, Marcheluzzo’s R&D department continues to conduct meticulous ongoing research into the drying process. The characteristics of the raw materials, the quality of the end product and above all energy factors are carefully evaluated in order to offer the customer the most suitable technology for his specific product.

In recent years, clay products such as masonry blocks and roof tiles have evolved in terms of their sizes and geometries and now cannot be dried using conventional systems.

For this reason, Marcheluzzo has sought to develop internally the skills it needs in order to offer effective solutions to an evolving market which, despite the current difficulties, is in search of increasingly modern and efficient technology.

The best known models of dryers are the semi-continuous and static chamber types. The operation of these dryers involves introducing variable quantities of hot air into the tunnels and then providing internal ventilation so that the hot air flows over the material positioned on dedicated supports.

Field studies conducted by Marcheluzzo have demonstrated that it is not only possible to optimise the quantity of air used, but above all that it can be carried more effectively to the product, thereby guaranteeing higher efficiency and subjecting the products to lower thermal stress.

The innovations introduced by Marcheluzzo to the internal ventilation system have led to significantly shorter cycle times, lower energy usage and a smaller percentage of rejects.

Three main types of ventilation systems are used: • Cone ventilation: the air flows over the material at high speed, but with an impulsive and periodic flow; the cone

zo. Tali difetti possono riguardare la superficie esterna del mattone, oppure quella interna, compromettendone le caratteristiche tecniche e di funzionalità.

Tra le variabili che intervengono nel processo di essiccazione, oltre alla forma e alle dimensioni dei pezzi, risultano di fondamentale importanza anche le caratteristiche dell’argilla utilizzata che deve avere requisiti specifici in termini di granulometria e di finezza della lavorazione. Sul mercato sono disponibili diverse tipologie di impianti di essiccazione, ma tutti basano il loro principio di funzionamento sul rapporto che si crea tra la quantità di aria immessa nell’ambiente essiccante e l’energia termica in esso contenuta.

Quando si parla di creare le giuste condizioni di essiccazione si pensa soprattutto al ciclo, quindi ai tempi di sosta del materiale all’interno degli essiccatoi, alle curve di Bigout, ossia alla perdita di acqua espressa in grammi nell’unità di tempo e al conseguente ritiro del materiale. Tutto questo, tuttavia, spesso non è sufficiente. Bisogna infatti creare anche le giuste condizioni di ventilazione interna, attraverso opportune macchine che tengano conto della quantità di aria da muovere, della pressione e della velocità dell’aria in transito. partimento Ricerca e Sviluppo di Marcheluzzo la fase di essiccazione continua a essere oggetto di studio costante e minuzioso. Le caratteristiche delle materie prime, la qualità del prodotto finale e soprattutto l’aspetto energetico, vengono valutati attentamente e in modo congiunto al fine di poter offrire ai produttori di laterizi la tecnologia più adatta per il trattamento del proprio prodotto.

Nel corso degli ultimi anni le varie tipologie di laterizi, quali blocchi da muratura e coperture, hanno subito modifiche dimensionali e geometriche che spesso non possono essere processate su impianti tradizionali. In tal senso l’azienda vicentina ha cercato di sviluppare al suo interno le giuste competenze per poter dare risposte qualificate ad un mercato in evoluzione che, nonostante le difficoltà, chiede tecnologia sempre più moderna ed efficiente.

Gli essiccatoi più conosciuti sono senz’altro i modelli semi continui e le camere statiche. Queste macchine hanno sempre basato il loro funzionamento sulla gestione più o meno corretta di quantità variabili di aria calda immessa nelle gallerie, e sulla successiva ventilazione interna deputata a far passare l’aria calda attraverso il materiale posizionato sugli appositi supporti.

Gli studi condotti sul campo da Marcheluzzo hanno dimostrato non solo la possibilità di ottimizzare la quantità di aria utilizzata, ma soprattutto di veicolarla sul prodotto in modo più appropriato, garantendo maggiore efficienza e minor stress per i prodotti. L’azienda ha infatti apportato innovazioni sul sistema di ventilazione interna che hanno permesso una sensibile riduzione dei cicli e una riduzione dell’energia utilizzata e della percentuale di scarti.

Sono tre i principali i sistemi di ventilazione adottati: • Ventilazione a cono: alta velocità di attraversamento dell’aria sul materiale, ma con flusso

In the 20 years long development of the ceramic tile decoration with single pass inkjet printers, commonly referred to as “digital” printers, the ceramic floor and wall tile companies have transformed the way they organise and manage decoration within the production process. It is hardly surprising that a similar path can now be followed for the decoration of other clay products, such as bricks and roof tiles.

The main target of the new “digital” trend is to reproduce old style surfaces traditionally made by old bricks, woods and stones, giving an added value to the standard bricks and roof tiles.

For these products, which are sometimes also available in glazed versions, the following points must be considered: • unlike ceramic tiles, bricks and roof tiles are not flat and the surfaces that need to be decorated may extend significantly on three dimensional axes.

is normally visible. However, walls also have corners where the bricks have two visible faces, one orthogonal to the other. This makes it necessary to print on at least two orthogonal sides of the brick.

To meet this need, Projecta Engineering offers the “TOP & EDGES” solution, in which two modules are installed one after the other: the first module performs printing on a “horizontal” side, the second module on one or two surfaces “perpendicular” to the previous one, so that the brick has two or three decorated faces.

The “TOP & EDGES” printer is the natural evolution of two of Projecta Engineering’s existing models: “EvoHybrid” printer (fig. 1) for “horizontal” printing, and “EvoMoving” printer (fig. 2), where one or more printheads can be orientated from 0° to 90° (fig. 3/4) according to the different orientation of the surfaces. “EvoMoving” is normally used in the decoration of the so-called “special ceramic pieces”, i.e. baseboards, strips, steps and ventilated facades (or “fassadenklinker”).

In the “TOP & EDGES” printer, the two modules are synchronized so that the image printed on the horizontal surface by the TOP module can extend naturally onto the perpendicular sides of the brick and roof tile by the the EDGES module. ❱ Production conditions Unlike ceramic tile plants, bricks and roof tiles factories are not planned for the decoration of the pieces, so they rarely have suitable spaces for installing a printer. In addition, there are cases where the only available space is located immediately after the extruder and before the cutting stage, so the printers have to carry out decoration over continuous surfaces.The printers produced by Projecta Engineering have a remarkable compactness, and they can be installed in limited or confined spaces.

The management of the image to be printed is adjusted in order to create a continuous print flow, suitable for decorating the extruded product prior to cutting with a virtually seamless, continuous graphic design.

In aggiunta a ciò si presentano casi in cui l’unico spazio a disposizione è posto prima del taglio dei singoli pezzi, immediatamente dopo l’estrusore, per cui le stampanti devono decorare superfici continue.

Le stampanti prodotte da Projecta Engineering, caratterizzate da una notevole compattezza, si prestano ad essere collocati in spazi limitati. La gestione dell’immagine da stampare è regolata in modo da creare un flusso di stampa continuo, idoneo per la decorazione del prodotto estruso e prima del taglio dei pezzi con grafiche aventi un ciclo virtualmente circolare, senza soluzione di continuità.

Le tegole sono dei prodotti la cui forma può essere molto varia ma che sono caratterizzate dalla necessità di decorare due superfici: la parte superiore della tegola, la cui forma può essere subplanare o arcuata, e la sottile parte frontale, a vista.

Also, grit can be digitally applied and fixed to the upper surface of the roof tiles by means of an “EvoDryFix” dry printer, a “digital” machine patented by Projecta Engineering and widely used in the decoration of ceramic surfaces. This printer makes it possible to further enhance product aesthetics by adding a characteristic typical of handmade bricks and roof tiles, covered by grit and sand on the surface. ❱ The automated factory The evolution of industrial processes is driven by the need to increasingly automate the production chain and ensure an automatic flow of process management data. In many countries, a number of brick and roof tile factories already have highly automated process management. Projecta Engineering printers can be integrated in an automated production cycle and the management software is able to interface with Industry 4.0 processes.

Technologies for primary crushing of hard clays Tecnologie per la macinazione primaria di argille dure Bongioanni Impianti (Fossano, Italy)

The choice of an effective grinding process is very important for obtaining products with high technical and aesthetic qualities.

Based on experience acquired in more than 100 years of operation in the heavy clay industry, Bongioanni Macchine has developed three types of machine suitable for primary crushing of particularly hard clays with various levels of moisture content.

These are the primary crusher type 612FR, the clay crusher type RR1200 and the clay disintegrator type 13LD, rugged solutions built with high abrasion resistant materials that guarantee consistent long-term quality.

The machine dimensions were carefully designed so as to obtain an output particle size that would ensure smooth machine operation during subsequent processing.

The primary crusher and the clay crusher can be installed immediately downstream of the box feeder or can be supplied with material discharged from wheel loaders. The output particle size will be suitable for directly feeding a clay disintegrator or a wet pan mill.

Ai fini dell’ottenimento di prodotti ad alto valore aggiunto sia tecnico che estetico, gioca un ruolo fondamentale la scelta di un efficace processo di macinazione.

Sulla base dell’esperienza maturata in oltre cent’anni di attività nel settore dei laterizi, Bongioanni ha sviluppato tre tipologie di macchine dedicate alla macinazione primaria delle materie prime, adatte alla frantumazione di argille particolarmente dure e con diverso grado di umidità.

Il frantumatore e il rompizolle possono infatti essere installati immediatamente dopo i cassoni dosatori o sullo scarico diretto del materiale dagli automezzi e la pezzatura in uscita è adatta ad alimentare direttamente un laminatoio disintegratore o una molazza.

a roughing roller mill. It features a smooth roller with a large diameter which rotates at slow speed opposite a smaller diameter roller equipped with interchangeable blades, which instead rotates at high speed.

The combined action of the rotating movement towards the centre of the two rollers, and in particular the high speed of the bladed roller, allows the clay to be crushed and the stones to be split into smaller pieces. The safety and smooth operation of the entire process is ensured by safety breaking pins capable of absorbing any accidental overloads between the rollers. Clay is fed from the top by means of a belt conveyor, while a feeding hopper carries it towards the central portion of the rollers.

The RR1200 clay crusher is designed to crush and crumble hard clays that may have stone intrusions originating from the quarry, thereby facilitating and optimising the subsequent raw material processing treatments.

Using a belt transmission system, two motors drive the coaxial gearboxes mounted on the two shafts which rotate at the same speed. The shafts are fitted with star-shaped discs made of anti-wear steel and further hardened by means of a welding process, which serve to crush and crumble the raw material at the preparation stage.

L’azione combinata del movimento rotatorio verso il centro dei due rulli, e soprattutto l’alta velocità del rullo con le lame, permette lo sminuzzamento dell’argilla e lo sgretolamento delle pietre; il tutto è associato a dei ponticelli di rottura che permettono di assorbire eventuali sovraccarichi accidentali tra i rulli. L’alimentazione dell’argilla viene effettuata dall’alto tramite un nastro trasportatore, mentre una tramoggia di carico la convoglia verso il centro dei rulli.

Il rompizolle RR1200 è ideale per frantumare e sminuzzare argille dure con eventuali intrusioni di pietre provenienti dalla cava, in modo da facilitare e ottimizzare i successivi trattamenti di lavorazione della materia prima.

Per mezzo di trasmissione a cinghia, due motori trasmettono il movimento ai riduttori coassiali montati su due alberi che girano alla stessa velocità.

Sugli alberi sono montati dei dischi in acciaio antiusura, sagomati a forma di stella a più punte, ulteriormente ricoperte di saldatura, che hanno lo scopo di frantumare e sminuzzare il materiale in lavorazione.

technology The pulleys on each gearbox are fitted with a mechanical breaking pin and both shafts are equipped with rotation speed control. If the maximum permissible effort is exceeded, the mechanical breaking pin breaks and the rotational speed control sends a signal to cut power to the motors and to stop feeding clay to the machine.

The clay is fed from the top by means of a belt conveyor and passes through a hopper to ensure correct feeding towards the central portion of the machine, where scrapers are present to ensure proper cleaning of rollers. On request, a third independently controlled shaft equipped with feeding reels can be mounted.

The 612FR primary crusher is designed to crush and crumble clods of hard clay coming from the quarry to a particle size that will guarantee good operation of the subsequent machines.

The primary crusher consists of two strong steel sides containing the housings for the bearings that support two rollers placed at a fixed centre-to-centre distance and which rotate at the same speed. These rollers consist of a shaft on which steel crushing stars with anti-wear coated tips are mounted.

The rollers are actuated by epicyclical reduction gears driven by a system of motors, pulleys and V-belts.

A rugged electrowelded sheet steel hopper conveys the clay to the crushing discs and at the same time supports a set of scrapers for roller cleaning. The side walls of the hopper are protected by an anti-wear plate and all the bearings are lubricated with grease.

L’argilla, alimentata dall’alto tramite nastro trasportatore, viene convogliata attraverso una tramoggia di carico, garantendo l’alimentazione verso il centro della macchina dove sono presenti dei raschiatori per garantire la pulizia dei rulli. Su richiesta è possibile avere un terzo albero aspi a comando indipendente.

Il frantumatore 612FR è stato studiato per frantumare e sminuzzare grandi zolle di argilla dura o scistosa provenienti dalla cava.

La granulometria del materiale in uscita è tale da garantire il buon funzionamento delle

macchine successive.

Il frantumatore è costituito da due robusti fianchi in acciaio in cui sono ricavate le sedi dei cuscinetti che supportano due rulli posti ad un interasse fisso e che ruotano alla stessa velocità.

Questi rulli sono costituiti da un albero su cui vengono montate delle stelle frantumatrici in acciaio con riporti antiusura in corrispondenza delle punte stesse. I rulli sono azionati mediante riduttori epicicloidali, comandati da un sistema di motori, pulegge e cinghie.

Una robusta tramoggia in lamiera d’acciaio elettrosaldata convoglia l’argilla sui dischi frantumatori, supportando contemporaneamente una serie di raschiatori per la pulizia dei rulli. Le pareti laterali della tramoggia sono protette da lamiera antiusura e tutti i cuscinetti sono lubrificati a grasso.

To meet growing demand for building materials, the companies Cerámica Rosario S.A. based in the province of Santa Fe, Argentina and Cerâmica Barrobello located in Santa Cruz, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, recently commissioned sophisticated technological solutions to increase their production capacity. In both cases, the Verona, Italy-based company Cosmec was chosen to supply and install next-generation equipment to help the two companies achieve their goals. ❱ Two new drying lines for Cerámica Rosario The Argentine company’s most urgent need was to expand its drying department. To do this, it once again turned to its longstanding supplier Cosmec, which it considered to have the right skills and expertise to improve the efficiency and performance of complex thermal machines. To achieve a daily production of 1,030 tonnes of hollow bricks, Cosmec will install two new drying lines alongside the six existing lines. The new drying tunnels will be equipped internally with mobile cone ventilation devices, with a galvanised steel double cone diffuser and an air distribution grille of the same height as the load to be dried. This system ensures rapid and uniform drying and consequently eliminates the risk of internal stresses due to different drying speeds between different parts of the product, thereby reducing the quantity of waste and ensuring high quality standards. The expansion project developed by Cosmec involves removing the infill masonry from the south wall of the dryer, repositioning the monodirectional conical diffusers belonging to the last line and adding new bi-directional de-

In entrambi i casi è stata scelta Cosmec, società italiana con sede a Verona che provvederà a fornire e installare impianti di nuova generazione per traghettare le due aziende verso gli obiettivi prefissati.

Per farlo ha rinnovato la storica partnership con Cosmec, ritenuta il partner con le giuste competenze e il “know-how” necessario per intervenire su macchine termiche complesse migliorandone efficienza e prestazioni. The flow of hot air is supplied by centrifugal fans, while internal air recycling is performed by fans that take the moist air from the flues, mix it with ambient air, pre-heat it by means of auxiliary burners and introduce it into the initial section of the tunnel.

The moist air is extracted from the tunnels by means of axial fans installed on the tunnel ceiling in a rear position with respect to the entrance transfer table. In order to speed up car movements inside the dryer, the decision was taken to modify the existing transfer tables and increase the loading capacity from one car to two cars. This was achieved by associating each existing transfer table (master) equipped with autonomous drive and centring device with a non-motorised “slave” transfer table capable of separating itself from the “master” unit and moving to the correct car loading or unloading position. The two drying lines are currently being assembled and will be commissioned in around June 2021. ❱ Cerâmica Barrobello adopts more automation Following the outstanding results achieved in 2019 with the supply of a double tile setting line complete with robotised kiln car loading, Cerâmica Barrobello has decided to press ahead with the process of automating its plants with Cosmec technology. The investment will concern both lines (hollow bricks and roof tiles) present in the Filial plant, which will undergo major reorganisation. The roof tile plant is entirely lacking in equipment for loading the product onto kiln cars and will be supplied with three independent lines for preparing, forming and binding packs, together with a connecting line with pack layer programming and robotic loading onto kiln cars, and a set of machines for automating car movements for the two existing kilns. On completion, the production capacity of each pack preparation line will be 2,500 tiles per hour. This solution will reduce the cost of personnel currently engaged in loading operations by replacing the current twelve operators/shift with just three operators/ shift, as well as greatly reducing waste. Unlike the roof tile line, the hollow brick line is already equipped with some automated systems, but these are not sufficient to guarantee the flexibility required by today’s market. Cosmec will therefore modify and supplement the equipment in the setting and fired product unloading area. The addition of two new robotic units will expand the product range, increase quality, reduce waste and improve packaging. The equipment is due to be installed this autumn and will ensure full-scale production from early 2022.

Al fine di velocizzare la movimentazione dei carri all’interno dell’essiccatoio si è scelto di modificare i trasbordi esistenti portando la capacità di carico da un carrello a due carrelli. Questo è stato possibile accoppiando a ciascun trasbordo esistente (master), dotato di motorizzazione autonoma e dispositivo di centraggio, un trasbordo “slave” non motorizzato, ma con la capacità all’occorrenza di distanziarsi dal dispositivo “master” per portarsi nella corretta posizione di carico o scarico dei carrelli. Le due linee di essiccazione sono attualmente in fase di montaggio e saranno avviate intorno a giugno 2021. ❱ Più automazione per Cerâmica Barrobello Dopo i brillanti risultati ottenuti nel 2019 con la fornitura di una doppia linea impilatrice per tegole, con carica robotizzata del carro forno, Cerâmica Barro-

bello ha deciso di proseguire nel processo di automatizzazione dei suoi impianti con Cosmec. L’investimento riguarderà entrambe le linee (mattoni forati e tegole) presenti nello stabilimento Filial che subiranno una profonda ristrutturazione. Per l’impianto di produzione delle tegole, sprovvisto di attrezzature per il carico del prodotto su carri forno, saranno fornite tre linee indipendenti per la preparazione, formazione e legatura delle mazzette, una linea di raccordo con programmazione dello strato di mazzette e carico robotizzato sui carri forno e una serie di macchine per l’automatizzazione della movimentazione carri relativa ai due forni esistenti.

A fine intervento, la capacità produttiva di ogni linea di preparazione mazzette sarà di 2.500 tegole/ora. La fornitura permetterà di ridurre il costo del personale attualmente dedicato all’operazione di carico, sostituendo gli attuali dodici operatori/turno con soli tre operatori/turno, oltre a una forte diminuzione degli scarti. Contrariamente alla linea tegole, la linea per i mattoni forati presenta già alcune automazioni che però non sono sufficienti a garantire l’adeguata flessibilità richiesta oggi dal mercato. Cosmec si occuperà di modificare e integrare le attrezzature nella zona impilatrice e scarico del cotto. Tramite l’inserimento di due nuove unità robotiche sarà possibile ampliare la gamma prodotti, aumentarne la qualità, diminuire gli scarti e migliorare il confezionamento. L’installazione delle attrezzature, prevista per il prossimo autunno, garantirà una produzione a regime a partire da inizio 2022.

The operation of glazing and decorating bricks and roof tiles is one of the most delicate steps in the production process, but if properly executed can create a wide variety of aesthetic finishes suitable for many different architectural projects. To maintain high quality standards, the process requires the highest levels of expertise, technology and automation. Smac offers a range of solutions for the glazing of roof tiles and special pieces that guarantee uniform coverage based on rotary nebulisation, spraying and the application of powders, sands and other granular materials. ®

❱ Multiglaze for perfect glazing Multiglaze represents the next step in the evolution of traditional disc booths. A complete glazing station, it consists of a loadbearing frame structure, an independent conveyor, a conveyor belt cleaning device, pumps for colour supply and recovery, an agitator/mixer tank for engobe/glaze, automatic opening, an automatic cleaning and washing system, an orientable application unit and control panel with touchscreen, inverters and a PLC with production recipe management.

Uniform application by rotary nebulisation using disc booths is by far the most widely used decoration method. The glaze/ engobe is sprayed by means of high-speed rotation of disc packs with different diameters and designs equipped with undulating or grooved discs. The rotary units are directly driven by a special compact hollow rotor motor designed entirely

by Smac, which guarantees high standards of quality and durability. Rotation may be clockwise or anticlockwise for greater control over the direction of the glaze jet and is chosen by means of a selector on the control panel. The rotary units are fed via perforated glaze/engobe supply pipes connected to a pneumatic pump. Every glaze/engobe feeding unit can be controlled via selectors on the main board and automatic valves with calibrated anti-wear nozzles.

This is the most effective method for ensuring uniform glaze/ engobe coverage of both standard and special pieces that often have hard-to-reach areas. To ensure that these areas are glazed properly, the booths allow for numerous adjustments both of the disc inclination and of the entire sheet metal structure (upper and lateral towers), as well as the rotation of the disc in both directions.

The system can operate with up to 3 upper spraying units and up to 6 lateral units, all of which are adjustable in height, inclination, spray angle, speed and direction of rotation.

Se effettuato a regola d’arte, consente di ottenere un’ampia gamma di finiture estetiche che rispondono brillantemente ai più svariati progetti architettonici. Per garantire uno standard qualitativo elevato, il processo richiede il massimo in termini di know-how, tecnologie e automazione. Smac propone diverse soluzioni finalizzate alla smaltatura delle tegole e pezzi speciali che promettono una copertura uniforme del pezzo attraverso unità di nebulizzazione centrifughe, spruzzatura, applicazione di polveri, sabbie e altri materiali granulari. ❱ Multiglaze per una smaltatura perfetta Multiglaze rappresenta l’evoluzione delle cabine a disco di smaltatura classiche presenti sul mercato. La copertura uniforme tramite nebulizzazione centrifuga, con l’utilizzo di cabine a dischi, è in assoluto il metodo di decorazione più utilizzato. La spruzzatura dello smalto/ingobbio avviene per mezzo di rotazione ad alta velocità di pacchi disco di diversi diametri e disegno, dotati di dischi ondulati o scanalati. Le unità centrifughe hanno un traino diretto tramite speciale motore a rotore cavo, di dimensioni compatte, progettato interamente da Smac, che garantisce elevati standard qualitativi e di durata. La rotazione dei pacchi disco può avvenire in senso orario o antiorario per avere maggiore controllo sulla direzione del getto di smalto, e viene selezionata tramite l’apposito selettore posto sul quadro di comando. Le unità centrifughe vengono alimentate tramite tubi forati porta smalto/ingobbio, collegati ad una pompa pneumatica.

Ogni singola alimentazione dello smalto/ingobbio viene controllata dal quadro di comando tramite selettori e valvole automatiche dotate di ugelli calibrati antiusura.

Tale metodo risulta il più efficace per la copertura uniforme con smalti/ingobbi, sia dei pezzi standard, sia dei pezzi speciali che spesso presentano zone difficilmente raggiungibili. Per assicurarsi che tali zone vengano smaltate adeguatamente, le cabine offrono numerose regolazioni sia dell’inclinazione del disco sia dell’intera struttura in la-

The large number of disc packs and the wide range of possible settings ensure optimal glaze/engobe application on the pieces. This is because each disc pack applies smaller quantities but with a higher degree of nebulisation. ❱ Automation, speed and precision The system is fully automatic and requires minimal maintenance and checks during operation. The independent transport system ensures total recovery of the glaze/engobe and facilitates installation on the production line. Colour feeding is performed by means of a pneumatic pump equipped with a pulsation compensation system which maintains a constant glaze flow for optimal application on the pieces. The new automatic cleaning system allows for excellent washing of all internal parts of the booth in just a few minutes, with automatic glaze recovery and discharge of the dirty water. This results in extremely rapid production and colour changes with minimal operator intervention.

Multiglaze has a very low risk of error and the system is not subject to stoppages for adjustment or maintenance. With a consistent glaze/engobe quality and constant line speed, the applied weight remains uniform. The entire system is controlled from an electric control panel with a PLC and inverter capable of performing programming and saving production parameters in storable recipes. It can be integrated into the Multiline software for managing the entire engobing, glazing and decoration line.

The glazing solutions developed by Smac are now used all over the world and give customers the assurance of a fully-proven procedure that meets all production requirements.

Il trasporto indipendente garantisce il totale recupero dello smalto/ingobbio e facilita l’installazione sulla linea produttiva.

L’alimentazione del colore avviene tramite pompa pneumatica con sistema di compensazione delle pulsazioni che permette un flusso costante garantendo un’applicazione ottimale sui pezzi. Il nuovo sistema automatico di pulizia permette di ottenere, in pochi

minuti, un ottimo lavaggio di tutte le parti interne della cabina con recupero automatico dello smalto e scarto delle acque di lavaggio. Questo si tradurrà in estrema rapidità dei cambi di produzione e colore con il minimo intervento dell’operatore.

La possibilità di errore con Multiglaze è molto bassa, il sistema inoltre non è soggetto ad interruzioni dovute a regolazioni o manutenzioni.

Con costanti parametri di qualità smalto/ingobbio e costante velocità della linea, il peso applicato risulterà uniforme nel tempo.

L’intero sistema è controllato da quadro elettrico di comando con PLC e inverter che permette la programmazione e il salvataggio dei parametri produttivi in ricette memorizzabili e che può essere integrato all’interno del software Multiline per la gestione dell’intera linea di ingobbiatura, smaltatura e decorazione.

At a time when mobility is restricted and in many cases entirely prohibited due to the Covid-19 pandemic, remote support is a strategic tool for ensuring the continuity of plant startup and testing activities on overseas customers’ production sites. Meccanica 2P, a company that has been supplying technology to the brick industry for over 40 years, has successfully started up and tested a number of lines remotely in recent months using digital plant engineering solutions designed to reach even the most distant locations, confirming its natural propensity for innovation and Industry 4.0 applications. ❱ Italy-Colombia: overcoming distances with remote assistance The effectiveness of Meccanica 2P’s digital solutions has been demonstrated by the work carried out for two leading Colombian brick producers, both based in Medellín. A continuous cutting line for block production and a system for handling and loading blocks on a rapid dryer have been installed at the production site of Ladrillera Delta, while a line for handling and loading blocks on a rapid dryer has been started up at Ladrillera Altavista. The companies received support with logistics and installation of the machines, which were set up on site directly by the customers’ engineers following meticulous design and dry run testing at the Meccanica 2P factory.

Plant start-up was managed by means of a remote assistance service using 24-hour video cameras and a direct connection with the software that guided and supported the Colombian engineers during the start-up and testing phases. This system gave the programmers in Italy a complete overview of the plant and allowed them to interact with the machine setup software and provide direct support to on-site engineers

The House of Grain in rural Jutland Una Casa del Grano tra le campagne dello Jutland

With its warm, delicate hues, the Kornets Hus, or House of Grain, stands out amongst the golden wheat fields in the Danish municipality of Hjørring, in northern Jutland, in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape. Designed by Norwegian architecture firm Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter (RRA), this new learning centre combines tradition and modernity and is inspired by the region’s rich landscape, folk culture and agricultural heritage. Modelled on the shapes of traditional baker’s ovens, it provides locals, visitors and students with a place for activity-based learning where they can share traditional breadmaking recipes and techniques and explore new ideas.

With its L-shaped plan surrounded by a garden courtyard, Kornets Hus is built alongside an existing farm and bakery. Its architectural form is the result of research into the region’s landscape and local building tradition. The teaching and exhibition spaces and workshops are positioned at either end of the building beneath two soaring lightwells reminiscent of traditional ovens, which allow natural light to flood into the classrooms. The public spaces are organised around a large bread oven, while large floor-to-ceiling windows offer splendid views across a vast expanse of wheat fields, which can also be appreciated from the building’s terrace.

Il nuovo centro si ispira infatti alle forme degli antichi forni dei panettieri e vuole essere d’ispirazione a visitatori locali, studenti e turisti, offrendo un luogo d’apprendimento pratico dove condividere ricette tradizionali, modalità di lavorazione antiche, ma anche nuove sperimentazioni.

Con una pianta a forma di L circondata da un ampio giardino, la Kornets Hus si sviluppa accanto a una fattoria e un panificio esistenti, ed è il risultato di un’approfondita ricerca architettonica in linea con la tradizione costruttiva locale e il contesto naturalistico. Gli spazi per la didattica, per le mostre tematiche e i laboratori sono posizionati alle due estremità del suggestivo edificio, sotto due svettanti pozzi luminosi che richiamano le antiche fornaci e forniscono alle aule una grande quantità di luce naturale. Nel cuore dell’edificio gli spazi pubblici si posizionano intorno a un grande forno. Le ampie vetrate che partono da terra e raggiungono il soffitto fanno da cornice a una splendida vista sulla distesa di campi di grano che può essere apprezzata anche dalla terrazza dell’edificio.

The splendid brick vaults of the Imperial Kiln Museum Le suggestive volte in mattoni dell’Imperial Kiln Museum

The Zhu-Pei architecture firm recently completed construction of the Imperial Kiln Museum in Jingdezhen (Jiangxi province), a project that pays tribute to the past and present of a city renowned as the world porcelain capital where porcelain was produced for the Chinese imperial family from the mid12th century onwards.

Designed to evoke traditional brick kilns, the museum stands on a 10,370 square metre site in the historic centre of Jingdezhen, close to the ruins of the imperial kiln dating back to the Ming dynasty. The building features more than half a dozen brick vaults, modelled on the traditional shape of local kilns, each with different dimensions, curvature and length.

In keeping with local building practice, the bricks used in the construction are partly new and partly recycled from old kilns.

The use of recycled bricks to build houses and all kinds of buildings is part of a long tradition in Jingdezhen, given that brick kilns have to be demolished and rebuilt every two or three years to maintain good thermal performance.

Inside the building there are five underground courtyards, each associated with one of the five themes of ancient Chinese culture (gold, wood, water, fire and earth), which allow natural light to penetrate into the interior spaces. The cylin-

Progettato per evocare le tradizionali fornaci di mattoni, il museo si sviluppa nel centro storico di Jingdhezen su 10.370 mq, in prossimità delle rovine del forno imperiale risalente alla dinastia Ming. La costruzione comprende più di una mezza dozzina di volte in mattoni, modellate sulla forma tradizionale dei forni loca-

li, ognuna con dimensioni, curvatura e lunghezza diverse.

I mattoni utilizzati nella costruzione sono in parte nuovi, in parte riciclati da vecchie fornaci per riflettere la cultura edilizia locale. A Jingdezhen, infatti, l’utilizzo di mattoni riciclati per costruire case ed edifici di ogni genere viene da lontano, in quanto ogni due o tre anni le fornaci vengono rase al suolo e ricostruite per mantenere le giuste prestazioni termiche.
