Summer 2017

A

warm, sunny welcome to our summer 2017 issue. As we all prepare for the long summer holiday ahead, turn to page 10 for our “Summer Activities and Events Guide” to find out what’s going on where. There’s plenty to keep the children entertained this summer as usual! Having been made aware that several regular classes had changed or stopped, our Weekly Activities Timetable, starting on page 45, has been checked and verified by us so should be fully up to date at the time of going to print. Not all these sessions will run throughout the summer though so please check with the organisers of a class before you turn up. As you browse the magazine, please remember that Time for Tots would not exist if it weren’t for all our lovely advertisers, so if you respond to something you see in the magazine, be it an advert, listing or editorial, please let them know where you saw it! Wishing you all a very happy, fun-filled summer making memories with your little ones, and for all the Father’s a very Happy Father’s Day on the 18th June! Until the autumn..... Vanessa

The Curious Case of

The Wistow Maze

T

o mark the 130th anniversary of the first Sherlock Holmes novel, the award-winning Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of Sherlock himself, complete with deerstalker hat and pipe. “First conceived in 1887 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes has fascinated millions of adults and children alike with his extraordinary brain, solving the most inexplicable of crimes over the decades. Now visitors to the Wistow Maze can put their own detective skills to the test, finding their way both through the maze and collecting different clues along the way”, explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. Opening this year on Wednesday 19th July, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze features three miles of intricate pathways carved through eight acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving fabulous panoramic views. Diana continues: “The challenge is to find 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the paths of the giant maze. Each one will have a clue to help identify the culprit and solve the curious case of the Wistow Maze!” An excellent family day out, visitors can also take part in a variety of mini mazes and games in the Activity Funyard, which includes a space hopper track, hoopla and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, ensuring there really is something to satisfy all ages. Open: Wednesday 19th July to Sunday 3rd September daily; then weekends only until Sunday 17th September. 10am – 6pm Free Parking. Infant Aquatics Lead The Way In New Submerging Approach For Baby Swimming

I

nfant Aquatics is a long standing baby led swim school, always using the most recent and up to date information and research to ensure its techniques are the safest and create a positive experience for babies. Founders Carly and Mel are proud to be members of Birthlight, the charity who work globally with experts and are always at the fore front of new developments within the aquatic environment. In recent year’s new research by internationally renowned infant swimming expert, Mr. Terje Stakset has shown that deep submerging is not always in the best interest of baby and can cause unnecessary stress. Mel says “Our whole ethos is baby led; securing a safe and happy environment so we were extremely interested in this information and research. From the day we started teaching we never advised submerging if a child was upset but we did teach deeper vertical submerging - that was until we met Terje Stakset - his approach along with our Birthlight training made total sense - why were we teaching deep submerging when ultimately we wanted children to swim on the surface? The shallow, child elective approach fitted our entire beliefs. We have found by using this approach our children rarely go through a time when they do not want to put their faces in or have a wobble so we believe it is working and if they choose to dive deep it is because they want to!” As well as changing some of their submerging techniques they also stopped offering underwater photography as they didn’t want it to be a negative experience for some babies. Carly says “We now teach babies and children to swim with their face in the water and naturally develop shallow water submersions electively. This is so powerful and a positive way forward. Of course, they get to a point where there’s no stopping them, but I’m proud to say it’s all about working at baby’s pace and never forcing them to do something out of their control”. Infant Aquatics are also very excited to be trialling new documentary style photography which they hope to launch in the near future.

When asked why they love Infant Aquatics, their customers replied: Baby-led techniques make you feel confident and safe. Helen x I love our swimming lessons with Louise it’s a great opportunity to spend quality time and closeness with your child whilst introducing them to swimming and water safety. Naomi Because after not learning to swim as a child and having a fear of the water till I was much older, you have given my 10 month old prem little girl so much love for the water. You have not only encouraged her but also us as a family. I will not be scared to take her near the water now and may just let her dad take her sailing when she’s older. Thank you so much for everything you have done for us! Kirri xxx Watching our daughters learning how to swim having lessons with infant aquatics is amazing. Their confidence in the water grows every week but most importantly their respect for water safety does too. Nicci x You gave my son confidence in the water. He swam with you for 18 months between the ages of 4 months and 2 years old. He is now 7 and still thinks swimming is great fun - you gave him a great start to learning to swim! Kerry I absolutely love our swimming lessons with Emma. I feel so confident with my little girl and Sophie gets so excited when she knows we are going to Emma. IA is superb and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. Julie x Brilliant teaching while allowing the children to have fun! The skills my daughter has achieved over the two & a half years at Infant Aquatics is amazing! I’d highly recommend to anyone. Francesca xx

Foster a life-long love of music with a

Giggles & Wiggles Class

A

t a Giggles and Wiggles class you can expect your Baby and toddler to be introduced to a musical world filled with singing, rhyming, imitating sounds, sound identification, instrument exploration and creative movement, your little ones are encouraged to be creative, to initiate their own ideas and to respond in their own special way while care givers nurture with active participation and give them the security they need whilst enjoying purposeful time together. With the daily pressures of life ever encroaching on family time these classes provide a moment in time to stop and enjoy what you and baby or toddler are doing in the here and now. As you play an instrument or sing a round or move like a train you will uncover an engaging musical world that builds on your child’s confidence, self control, communication skills. Giggles and Wiggles classes help children become better learners through music and movement as well as taking a holistic approach to their development and the learning aspect is for parents and caregivers too. It is by experiencing music rather than by performing that young children learn.

I invite you to be child like again and to experience music as if it were new to you. It is never too early or too late to come along and experience a class. I have also joined forces with KMPAT Kettering Music and performing arts trust in starting a baby and toddler class on Saturdays at 10.00 at Latimer Arts College in Barton Seagrave. They provide a very rich program from babies up to late teens where children can learn any instrument in an orchestra or a rock band or folk music and musical theatre - they are superb at what they do. My primary goal is to give you and your baby and child the best, positive first class experience and inspire you to a lifelong love of music. So sing a song and dance along! Cooking with Children: A delicious meal for you to make and consume together!

Supplied by “Always Time to Ba ke”

Simply Luscious “Cheat’s” Lasagne Even I admit that making a lasagne from scratch - with its many stages - can be a bit of a chore. But here is a brilliant cheat’s version that is delicious, takes half the time and can be as indulgent or healthy as you like. The trick is to simplify the sauces you need, and once you’ve made them, you can swap them in other dishes too. Little cooks will love “building” the lasagne, and they are always bowled over by the sense of achievement they get from making a “proper” dinner. Happy baking! Serves 4 to 6 ● Prep time about 30 minutes ● Cooking time 25 minutes

Method

ingredients Lasagne sheets (I use no pre cooking required) about 300g but depends on size of your dish For the Tomato Sauce: 1 clove garlic 1 tbsp olive oil 1 carton passata 1 tbsp tomato purée 1/2 tsp dried Italian herbs Pinch of sugar S&P For the “Béchamel” Sauce: 500g Greek yogurt 2 large eggs Pinch nutmeg Parmesan cheese, about half a wedge, finely grated

NB Instructions in blue are specifically for children 1. First make the tomato sauce. Crush or finely chop the garlic and place in a saucepan with the oil. Turn on the heat. 2. As soon as the garlic begins to sizzle and becomes aromatic add the passata, purée, herbs, sugar and salt and pepper (if using). 3. Fill the empty passata carton about 2/3 full of water and stir into the sauce. Let it gently bubble away with the lid off while you make the Béchamel sauce. 4. In a bowl break the eggs and beat lightly. 5. Add the yogurt and whisk to combine. Season. 6. Preheat the oven to 190°C. 7. Now you’re ready to build your lasagne. In a large square or rectangular ovenproof dish, put a layer of tomato sauce. 8. Add lasagne sheets to more or less cover the base 9. Add a layer of white sauce 10. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over 11. Add another layer of lasagne. 12. Now repeat - tomato, lasagne, white sauce, Parmesan and more lasagne. Leave at least a couple of centimetres at the top, making sure you finish with a layer of white sauce and cheese. 13. Bake for about 25 minutes, until it is golden and billowing, and the kitchen is filled with warmth and cosines! Health Twist - add lots of diced veg to the tomato sauce - I use peppers, courgette and aubergine - add a little more water and simmer with the lid on until the veg are tender, stirring occasionally and adding a touch more water if it begins to look dry. Use low fat yogurt if you like, but make sure it’s Greek yogurt.

Recipe supplied by “Always Time to Bake” who run local cookery classes for children of all ages and adults too! Visit www.alwaystimetobake.com for more information.

Top Tips for Busy Mums Getting Ready for Summer

H

ello readers,

Summer is approaching! Whether the sun shines or not, with our unpredictable weather, it’s a season of joy where holidays are taken to spend some quality time together as a family. With the excitement of booking comes a sudden “Aghhhhhhh!!! Bikini body needs to be ready!!” We have some top tips to help you in preparation for this...... 1. At home exfoliate your bodies 2 to 3 times a week. This allows the new skin cells to shine through which enables it to tan faster. 2. Make sure you moisturise your skin everyday to keep the new cells hydrated. 3. On your legs, where we have a build up of fatty tissue, apply your scrub and moisturiser vigorously in circular motions. This allows the blood to flow bringing oxygen to the cells and to take away any toxic deposits. 4. If you are wanting to go away with a glow we have a natural spray tan that will fade during your holiday and allow you to tan underneath. And yes you really do tan under a spray tan... 5. Your feet are also exposed so give them some TLC with one of our pedicures, we have a latest evolutionary range of products that can tackle the most stubborn of built up skin! So what ever your summer dreams are make sure you give your body some summer loving! Enjoy your freedom! Take Care,

Childcare

Top Tips for Choosing Childcare:

1. Consider your child’s age and needs. Younger children need closer attention. Some children flourish in small groups, others in larger groups. 2. Consider what hours you need childcare. Some providers offer cover early morning and later in the evening. Some providers are school term time only. 3. Look around the facilities. Are they clean and safe? 4. Ask about the activities the provider offers. Do they offer a range? Will your child be stimulated? 5. Look at the menu available. Will they cater for special requirements? 6. Ask for references and speak to other parents. Consider combining childcare if it would benefit you and/or your child 7. Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your childcare. Some providers have waiting lists. 8. Take your child with you when you look around and watch their reaction. With older children you can usually tell if they’re comfortable somewhere or not. 9. Research all your options well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Business Mum: amy Donovan From Tots play name: Amy Donovan Family: 1 child who is 2 years old Describe your business:

I run multi-activity classes in Kettering and Burton Latimer for babies and toddlers, which include massage, yoga, signing, singing and sensory play.

how long have you been doing this? 18 months. I started the business after my maternity leave ended.

What did you do before and why did you decide to start Tots play?

I was a primary school teacher in a previous life and when I was on maternity leave I decided that I didn’t want the long stressful days of teaching anymore and wanted to spend as much time with my little boy as I could. As I loved attending all the different classes, I knew it was something that I could do and enjoy! Plus, I can choose when I run classes and make sure it fits around everything I want to do with him.

What do you like about it?

I love seeing the parents and little ones bonding through the fun activities in the classes and seeing them grow, change and develop. Also, it has been really important to me, to try and establish a place where mums can meet other like-minded mums. It’s so rewarding knowing that there are lots of long lasting friendships that have been made through Tots Play classes.

how well does it fit in with family life?

It’s great, because I can choose when I run classes and when I want to take my holidays or days off.

What do you find are the drawbacks?

Sometimes I’m on Facebook or my laptop far too much! I think I need to learn to switch the technology off more!

What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of starting a business?

It’s a rollercoaster ride, but you have to go with it, as it takes at least a year to build up a successful business. Also, stick to doing the hours and days that fit in with you and your family, if you start to compromise, then you begin to lose why it might be that you started your business.

Tots Play offer unique, multi-activity classes for babies and toddlers from birth to 2+ years. Classes combine the benefits of sensory play, yoga, massage, sign language, singing, bubbles and more! Classes are currently held in Kettering and Burton Latimer. For a special offer on a 3 class booking, see the voucher on page 53. For more information or to book: Contact: Tel: E-mail: Website:

Eyecare for Children Children up to the age of 18 and in education are entitled to a free eye exam and free glasses under the NHS.

G

ood vision is critical to a child’s early educational, functional and social development. Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child’s visual needs as early as possible. The eyes continue to develop during childhood. The majority of children at birth are long sighted which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures. However if poor vision is not properly corrected early there is a risk of permanently poor vision. One in five school children could have undetected poor sight (RNIB). Recent studies have shown that many pupils are struggling with poor eyesight because eye tests are no longer routinely carried out in schools. Sight problems can wreck academic performance – or even lead to children being wrongly classed as “special educational needs”. Typical warning signs are: Excessive blinking, Squinting, Peering closely at Books and TV, Bumping into objects, Poor performance at school The importance of good eyesight in childhood cannot be overstated. Around 80% of a child’s learning occurs visually, yet many children do not see well enough to reach their full potential. Part of the problem is that children may not recognize they have a visual defect. It’s also easy for parents to think there’s nothing wrong with their child’s eyesight, not realizing that vision can change very quickly as young eyes develop At Stirling Opticians we use special computerised test charts so that we can check the vision of children that can’t read letters yet, and even younger toddlers and babies can have their vision assessed by our opticians using special equipment that measures the way images are being formed in the eye.

Did you Know? • 1 in 8 boys have a colour vision problem, early detection can help them choose a career where this isn’t a problem • Treatment for lazy eye or squint is far more effective if started at the age of 2-3 rather than 8+ • Children can wear contact lenses if the optician feels the child and parents can work together to care for the lenses

Funky Glasses for children Over the last few years, it has become more accepted and even fashionable for kids to wear glasses and this is reflected in the wide range of frame styles that are available. At Stirling Opticians we offer a large choice of free frames including branded ones from the likes of Batman, Superman, Barbie, and also designer brands to keep your young ones looking cool (Bench Kids, Kickers, Guess just to name a few). What sets us apart is our ranges of specialist children’s eyewear, for example Tomato eyewear and Erin’s World frames. Tomato frames are comfortable, colourful, practical frames which have been expertly designed with babies and children in mind. They can be fully adjusted to fit properly to a child’s head and are virtually unbreakable. They also come in a range of cool colours and designs. Erin’s World frames accommodate and fit children and adults with Down syndrome. Unlike other frames, the bridge is adjusted to fit on the unique features of the nose and the arms are modified to keep the glasses from constantly slipping. Erin’s World frames are available in a variety of sizes and styles to fit toddlers through adults.

Contact us on 01536 511605 and speak to our specialist childrens eyewear advisors. ‘Kids in Specs UK’ on Facebook is a great support group for helping parents of kids that have eye conditions or wear glasses.
