Autumn 2016 Contents
A
big welcome to the autumn issue. I hope you’ve enjoyed everything summer had to offer and are feeling refreshed ready for the new academic year. Although I love spending the summer with my children, it is somewhat of a relief to get back to normality and a routine when September rolls around! The clubs and classes will be resuming again so turn to page 22 to see what’s on offer. Many of the classes offer a free trial so you could take advantage of those to try out a few different activities and see what you and your child enjoy. If your child is entering into their pre-school year you’ll be applying for their school place in the next few months. A local teacher has written some top tips for choosing your child’s school on page 33 so be sure to have a read if this applies to you. Our events calendar is on pages 8 to 21 this issue with our special Halloween and Bonfire Night ‘what’s on’ guide on pages 12 to 16. Please remember if you respond to an advertisement in this magazine to mention where you saw it. Time for Tots would not exist without all its valued advertisers so it’s important they know their adverts are being seen. Enjoy the autumn!

Art o’Clock The new art, craft & sensory class
Art O’clock is an art, craft and sensory class for toddlers to 5 year olds devised and run by a qualified art teacher with the Development Review and EYFS programme in mind. The classes are structured to enable your little one to get the most out of their art experience, whether it’s painting, clay, mark-making, gluing or printing. Children develop at different stages therefore the classes are differentiated to meet your child’s ability: toddlers - 2 year olds and 3 - 5 year olds. The classes will focus more on the art process your child experiences as opposed to the outcome. Classes run during term time and are currently held in Kettering. Please email: sandramallen@hotmail.co.uk for more details or to register your interest.
New Studio
for Lindsey Arber Photography
I
t’s been a very exciting year at Lindsey Arber Photography with the opening of the new studio. The studio is located in Desborough, which works so well as its a nice central location and easy for families to travel to from the many surrounding towns and villages. The studio itself is perfect for the range of photography offered. The main room is an open space with both a seated area, for families to relax in, and the studio area so parents can watch their little ones in action. The best room though has to be the prop room! Filled with headbands, knitted hats, cake smash outf its, bunting and a variety of newborn props that parents can browse to add that personal touch to their images. Lindsey still does lots of location sessions, making the most of the countryside that surrounds the area, but as the demand for studio shoots has increased, it has also seen the arrival of Liz who has joined the team to help keep things ticking along smoothly.

Audiences will take an unforgettable journey through the Neverland they never knew this Christmas, as Northampton’s Royal stage is transformed for the much-anticipated European Premiere of Peter and the Starcatcher, from 29th November to 31st December. A Christmas Carol at The Core at Corby Cube Inspired by the world of Peter and the Starcatcher, which can be seen in the Royal auditorium this festive season, Royal & Derngate invites under 7s and their families on a magical and mystical adventure taking them on a journey into Neverland and back again. From Friday 2nd December to Saturday 7th January, fairy dust will be sprinkled to transform the theatre’s Underground Studio into an enchanting and immersive wonderland, for the delightful Second Star to the Right.

Directed by Jesse Jones (co-founder of The Wardrobe Ensemble and Resident Assistant Director at Royal & Derngate) and created with a team of brilliantly imaginative theatremakers, Second Star to the Right is the perfect introduction to theatre for little ones – a very special interactive experience for boys and girls under 7 and their adults. Tickets for family performances are just £9.50* each. Schools performances can be booked by groups of up to 60, at a cost of £370 for the group. Bubble Babies Swim School
For children of 3 months to 5 years
Welcome to the dynamic experience Treat yourself and your family to a fabulous start to the weekend in beautiful warm water with all the fun and excitement that comes with Bubble Babies swimming classes! Saturday mornings at Kingsley School’s hydrotherapy pool (Kettering) provide the ideal opportunity for children from 3 months to 5 years old to build up vital aquatic skills with mums, dads, even grandma or granddad all enjoying precious moments and a dynamic, fun-filled experience!
Learning in 34 degrees; tropical conditions! Divine water and air temperatures make a happy baby (not to mention parent!) and these optimum conditions mean every swimmer is comfortable and relaxed, ready to maximise on their 30 minute session. With the carefully structured lesson filled to the brim with vital skills, activities, games and races; baby’s progress is often swift and immensely satisfying for all those involved!
Bring Dad along
Saturdays mean Dad is often around and we have a wonderfully enthusiastic group of fathers who have come to relish the opportunities Bubble Babies provides for them to interact and bond with their children. Before the morning is out they have often swum through white water to Treasure Island together, braved caves and waterfalls and even been chased by Mr Shark (inflatable of course!!).
Thirteen years of experience
With 13 years of running Bubble Babies, Erika looks forward every week to welcoming, enthusing and inspiring her mini swimmers. ‘It’s a win-win situation! I get to jump and dive, float like a jelly fish and spin around under the water until I’m dizzy - all the things that I love to do - and the kids just zoom into action! The energy is infectious!’
Badges and certificates
To celebrate everyone’s achievements, babies receive the STA’s Starfish Badges and Certificates, while the older children earn the Stanley First Steps Series Awards. By firmly establishing the principles of good swimming technique in an encouraging, happy environment, Bubble Babies aims to create multiskilled, water-confident, safety-conscious swimmers with a lifelong love, respect and enjoyment of the water.
Underwater photoshoot
In October we have another Underwater Photograph
Photography by Underwater Art session lined up and this exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident in going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims?
Ask the parents
Dominic’s parents Eanna and Joanne enthuse, ‘We started coming to Bubble Babies 6 months ago with a 2 year old who didn’t like getting water on his face (hair wash time was a nightmare). We chose bubble babies because we’d heard fantastic reviews, they were small classes so more personal and the water temperature of the pool was warm which was a must for a child who already didn’t like water. From the first session, Erika was friendly and chatty and really made us all feel comfortable. She didn’t push our son to try anything he wasn’t ready for and encouraged us not to get disheartened as he would pick it up in his own pace. She knows all the children names which is incredible and is always happy to see everyone. It wasn’t long until we saw an improvement, after the first term he would happily put his face in the water to blow bubbles for a few seconds and his confidence in the water grew with every lesson. Now my child is completely different to when we first started lessons, he goes under the water by himself, picks toys off the bottom of the pool and even wants to swim unaided by an adult but with floats instead. So much confidence in such little time! We are so happy and can’t thank Erika enough for all her patience with us as much as with him! Thank you Erika :)’.

Featured Class: The Creation Station
T
he Creation Station is an award winning Arts & Craft session for children aged 5 months to 11 years. Activities include regular weekly sessions, parties, events and family fun sessions. What is the aim of the classes?
To inspire imagination and give you quality, fun, creative experiences with your child in a safe, nurturing and friendly environment.
Talk us through a typical class
The start of the session involves a Baby Discover bag or magic ideas box. Inside these are various items for the children to touch, explore and open up their imaginations. The next stage is the messy bit - working on the floor using and experimenting with paint to create hand prints, foot prints, designs and more. With the Baby Discover group, the parent/carer would move on to make something special as a keepsake with the paint work their baby has completed, whilst their baby is happy discovering the bag and world around them. In the Little Explorer session, once the children have finished in the painting area they would move to the creative table and enjoy gluing, cutting, sticking and more and take home with them what they have created. Finally, we all sit round in a circle and show everyone what we have created and what amazing imaginations we all have.
How do classes benefit children?
Following the early years foundation, each week and term follows a session plan. This term January to April has us looking at colours and each week a new colour will be introduced and the children will learn how to make that colour from mixing primary colours then the item they make will be in relation to that colour too. It also
Award-winning

P
arents looking for new ways to keep their children active, happy and engaged have found the solution in the form of performing arts classes at Stagecoach Performing Arts. Stagecoach Performing Arts in Kettering offer classes in singing, dancing and acting at Brambleside CP School and are offering a two week trial during the school autumn term for youngsters aged four to 18. Performance at Stagecoach is about more than simply learning how to sing, dance and act. Students develop the creative courage to unlock their potential, to stand up and be heard, to work well with other students and to embrace new ideas and possibilities. As they hone their new skills and work together to devise and rehearse performances, students become more self-assured, expressive, sociable and imaginative. All skills that will serve them well on the stage of life and help them to tackle new situations with resilience, creativity and courage. Eva Johnson, 12, and her brother Sam, 10, are now

BE GOOD AT BEING YOURSELF
Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a two week trial a couple of years ago. Their mum, Katie Johnson, said: “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.” She added: “They learn so much more than singing, dancing and drama. My son is naturally quite shy and I’ve seen his confidence levels soar, whereas my daughter is outgoing and has been able to channel her energy into performing.” Classes are small which means every child is given attention and allowed to realise their potential at their own pace. The teachers all have performing arts experience and are there to lead and support youngsters as they conquer fears and rise to new challenges. Classes run during school term time on Saturdays. A Special Time at Spratton Hall T he final year at Spratton Hall School is a special one that will live long in the memory of our pupils once they have left us. Year 8 pupils are given areas of responsibility, whether this is Head Boy or Head Girl, House Captains, Heads of Music, Captains of Sport or organising particular aspects of their House. These responsibilities mean that the children leave us as confident, well-rounded individuals, fully prepared for life before joining their chosen senior schools. Our Year 8 pupils also select a charity for which they raise awareness during the year. They attend trips to the site of the Battle of Bosworth and to the National Portrait Gallery and spend time away with their teams ‘on tour’ in such places as Oxford and York for hockey, rugby, cricket, netball or rounders. Once their Common Entrance Exams are completed, they have a splendid post CE programme, including a special Head Master’s treat as he takes them to London visiting various well-known sites and taking in a show in the evening. They have a ‘Special Activity Week’ with a variety of visiting speakers, and activities such as ballroom dancing, special challenge days, Fashion Show, Cinema Experience, Tours, educational workshops, quizzes, and charity presentations. In addition, two professional actors from ‘The Young Shakespeare Company’ spend a week with them putting on a Shakespeare play.
Photography by Nicky Callis The children go on ‘Outward Bound’ in the Lake District where they have the chance to enjoy each other’s company, while taking part in team building exercises, water sports and evenings spent socialising together or camping outside on the slopes of a mountain. Their time at Spratton culminates with the very special ‘Speech Day’ held in the marquee on the top fields and attended by over 800 people, where the Year 8s receive their prizes and, of course, the highlight of the day – the Head Boy and Head Girl Speech! That evening is the magical and very special “Leavers’ Ball”, again held in the marquee, a quite wonderful way for the children to end their time at Spratton and leave us with many wonderful memories.

Choosing Your Child’s Primary School
33
Ten Top Tips from a Local Teacher 1 2 3
4 5 6
7
Research local primary schools. Check their admission criteria- be realisticdon’t waste your 1st choice by putting down a school you are not eligible to apply for! Look at a school’s website- think about your own child - their personality and interests - do you think the school would suit them? Ignore gossip! Keep an open mind about a school until you have visited it. Find out when a school’s open days are - book yourself in early as popular times can get booked up. Try to choose a day when you can go without any children so have no distractions! Read through the latest Ofsted report but check the date. Schools can change very quickly - especially when they have new staff. Essential to visit your local catchment school - even if you do not think you will apply to that school. The development of the whole child is vital. Academic achievement comes to children who are happy and well-rounded. As children get older they like to invite friends home, this can be difficult if children live a long way away and can make it harder for them to join friendship groups. Always talk positively about a school to your child. Do not ask them which school they would like to go to, that’s not fair. Remember they are only 3/4 years old.
8 9 10
Choose a school because you think it is right for your child, not because it is where their friends are going. Children soon make a new set of friends. Do not miss the deadline for applications. Check the date on Northamptonshire County Council’s website and make sure you get your application in in plenty of time. A child’s first teacher is the most important- remember you as a parent are, and always will be, your child’s best teacher.

How big a pile would it make if you could get together all the presents your children had received since they were born? Yet there are millions of children around the world who have never received a present, in fact, the very thought is so alien that when you first give them a gift they will smile, enjoy it and then hand it back as they cannot believe it is theirs to keep. Operation Christmas Child, the world’s largest Christmas Children’s appeal, run by the Christian charity Samaritan’s Purse, aims to help make sure that as many of those children as possible, at least once in their lifetime, get to know what it feels like to be given a joyous gift. It’s so easy to take part. You simply cover an empty shoebox with colourful wrapping paper, fill it with gifts that will bring delight to a child including toys, school supplies, hygiene items, sweets and a £3 shipping donation. Drop it off at a location near to you and we then send
the shoeboxes to children overseas in Eastern Europe, Africa and Central Asia to remind them that they are loved and not forgotten. Last year we sent almost 1 million shoeboxes from the UK alone, and because we work with local churches in these countries, we know that the boxes are given out to those who really need them, regardless of their race, gender or religion. The shoebox gifts are simply destined for, and will be given to children living in difficult situations in some of the toughest parts of the world. We know that many children in the UK, even those who are quite young, love taking part in this campaign by choosing the gifts that go into their shoeboxes. It is a tangible and meaningful way to get them involved early in the act of giving and learning about people who are less fortunate than themselves. Please pack a shoebox gift this year and ensure that at least one more child in this world will know that God loves them, and that someone has taken the time to send them a special gift. operation Christmas Child V

Autumn Beauty for Busy Mums
H
Business Opportunities & Services
By Sanctuary of Beauty, Desborough
ello all, We are now falling into autumn where the days seem shorter and the night seems to creep into the day. Autumn is such a warming time with all the colours that fill the air but the air begins to cool down which makes us want to get all cosy and warm; wrapping our bodies up and hiding them away from the outside to keep us snug after the exposure we have had from summer. Before you hide your body away though, make sure you give it some TLC. We recommend a body polish, to get rid of the build up of dead skin cells after being in the sun, followed by a massage to hydrate your skin and relax your body and mind. A pedicure is also a must after your feet have been in sandals for the past few months. Your feet are extremely important, after all they carry you around everyday, but they can often be neglected when it comes to beauty routines. Booking your feet in for a pedicure is the start to falling into autumn. Make sure you fall in style and have healed yourself before you get all cosy. Here at Sanctuary of Beauty we look forward to getting you snug and ready. Don’t forget to claim your 10% off with the voucher in the back of the magazine. With love

Business Mum: vanessa Simpson From Time for Tots Name: Vanessa Family: 3 children aged 12, 10 and 6. Description of your business:
I publish a free, quarterly magazine for parents and carers of under 5s in North & East Northamptonshire. I started the business back in autumn 2007 after having my second child. The first issue was published in March 2008. I can’t believe it’s been 9 years!
on the autumn issue!) I also enjoy the work of course. You’re not going to start a business doing something you don’t enjoy! There are aspects I enjoy more than others but on the whole I love my work.
What did you do before?
What do you find are the drawbacks?
How long have you been in business?
After graduating with a degree in IT and Business Management I went on to work as an IT contractor working on IT projects up and down the country for various clients.
Why did you decide to start your business?
Working as a contractor my work could take me anywhere in the country and often meant long hours. After having children I wanted to be around for them more so decided to start my own business working from home. I found when I had children there was lots of information available on how to care and look after them but very little on local groups and activities for how/where to entertain your children. I thought there was a real need for something like Time for Tots to inform new parents of things to do and places to go in the local area. Having children opens up a whole new world!
What do you like about it?
I love being my own boss and the freedom and flexibility it allows me. I work the hours I choose, take days off when I want to and am always around for my children. It fits in very well with family life. I can take my children to school everyday and pick them up. If they’re sick it’s not a problem and I’m around for them every school holiday (although the summer holiday is always a tricky one when trying to work
Working from home I find it difficult separating work and home life sometimes. The two often blur into each other and it can feel like you are never away from work. I do sometimes miss being able to walk in the door after a day at work and not think about it again until the morning. Having your own business you are also not guaranteed a regular monthly income like you are in paid employment.
What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of working for themselves?
Make sure you are passionate about what you do and enjoy the work. It is hard work setting a business up from scratch and you’ll need to put a lot of hours in in the beginning to get it up and running - be prepared for that. If you’re passionate about what you’re doing though and enjoy it you won’t mind. Research your intended business to make sure there is a demand for it before spending all the time and money starting it up.
