Autumn 2011 Hello! A blue sky, crisp air and crunchy leaf-type welcome to your Autumn issue of Time for Tots! Well the new season brings big change for most of us. Your little ones may be starting nursery, off to big school for the first time, or just getting used to the darker mornings and earlier nights. There are plenty of fab clubs and classes starting up again after the long summer holidays (and exciting new ones to try out ), so if you have a little window in your week to fill then you’ll enjoy flicking through our brand new Clubs & Classes timetable on pages 16 & 17. On the subject of little windows, turn to page 10 for a peep at the normal daily schedule of four busy mums with very different lives. A big thank you lovely ladies for rolling up the blinds and giving Time for Tots readers a fascinating insight into how you run your households. If you fancy taking some time out and watching your littlies disappearing into leafy piles then turn to this issue’s ‘Family Day Out’ feature. Fermyn Woods Country park offers the perfect escape with loads to do in a beautiful setting (and it’s really nearby!) Have a good read and whatever your plans, I hope you and your tots have heaps of fun.
Liz
A BIG thank-you to Liz for editing this issue for me. Liz is the editor of the Northampton, South & West Northants edition of Time for Tots and agreed to manage and edit this issue for me so I could take the summer off to spend with my children. Thanks Liz!

What is a present worth?
H
Help put a smile on a child’s face this Christmas
ow many presents will your children get for Christmas this year? Can you even remember how many they received last year? How big a pile would it make if you could get together all the presents your children had received since they were born? Yet there are millions of children who have not only never had a present, but for whom the concept is so alien that when you first give them a gift they will smile, enjoy it and then hand it back as they cannot comprehend that something could ever be for them to keep. Operation Christmas Child, the worlds largest Christmas Children’s appeal, run by Samaritans Purse, aims to help make sure that as many of those children as possible, at least once in their lifetime, get to know what it feels like to be given a joyous gift. For 21 years we have been gathering in shoeboxes wrapped in pretty paper and full of toys, stationary, sweets and gifts. We then send them overseas to Eastern Europe, Africa and Central Asia to children who have been stricken by poverty or terrible events and use them to restore hope, bring a smile and remind them that someone does care. To date we have sent over 8 million shoeboxes from the UK and because we work with the churches overseas (we are a Christian Charity) we know that the boxes are given out to those who really need them. This is also the only criteria we use, race, gender, religion etc are not allowed to come into the decision making process, they are simply destined for, and will be given to, children who are needy. It is not only the children overseas who benefit though. We know that many children in the UK, even those who are quite young, really get into the campaign helping their parents pack boxes and are quite particular about what should go in. It is also a very tangible and meaningful way to get them involved early in the act of giving and learning about people who are less fortunate than themselves. Please do take the time out to make sure that at least one more child in this world goes into
the New Year with a bigger smile on their face than they have at the moment. Article by Chris Roberts, Regional Manager for Samaritans Purse in the South Midlands
How can you get involved?
Whether you take part as an individual or family, or as part of a larger group (such as nursery school, parent and tot group or local class), packing and preparing a shoebox couldn’t be easier. The Operation Christmas Child website: www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk will tell you everything you need to know including what you can put in your shoebox, how to pack it and where to deliver it. If taking part as a group you can order resources, such as leaflets and posters, from the website. Alternatively there is an ‘Operation Christmas Child’ leaflet which also contains all the information you need, including labels for your box(es). Time for Tots has a stash of these leaflets. Please email us, info@timefortots.co.uk, if you’d like one. The deadline for submitting shoeboxes is in early November so be sure to pack and deliver your box(es) before then.

Treasure the moment
At Precious Moments we believe that it is a real privilege to be involved in preserving the memories of pregnancy, childhood and family life - and feel that the love and passion we have for our work, is evident in the photographs we take, below we run through the process of how its done! Your photo session takes place in a fun and friendly studio environment – sittings usually take around 45mins. Our aim is to make your little one/s feel as comfortable as possible – so we do things at their pace and work around what they want to do – we find that this relaxed and informal approach produces the most spontaneous and natural portraits. Our photographer will use a range of backgrounds and props to create your portraits, although you are more than welcome to bring any toys or props that you would like your little one/s to be photographed with – a change of clothes is also a great idea too! After your photography session, you will be asked back for a viewing a few days later to preview your images. All you then have to do is pick your favorites! We will then work with you to create your original and vibrant portraits and layouts. Whether it is black and white, colour, traditional, or something more contemporary, it will be unique to you.
You can then choose from our affordable range of traditional or contemporary frames, canvas prints, and much more to show your beautiful portraits off at their very best. Now you can treasure those Precious Moments forever! For more information or to view examples of our work and products please visit: www.yourpreciousmoments.co.uk. Phew! What a Day!
Like me, do you tend to feel frazzled by 7pm, can’t work out where the day went and why your plans never materialise? Or do you run a tight ship and everything tends to runs like clockwork? Ever wonder as you arrive at the nursery gates (apparently through a hedge backwards) how the super glam mum dropping off her three under 5’s before zipping off to work does it? Or are you like her? Myself and three fellow mums made notes during a normal, term-time weekday and here they are. Compare and contrast as you will but I can safely say if I ever get stressed again I will close my eyes and repeat my new mantra: “pull yourself together and think of Megan”.
Viki teaches business English and lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, with her husband Ken and daughter Olivia, 2. 7.30am Get up and have our usual breakfast: weetabix with warmmilkandbanana. 8.30am Drive Liv to playschool for 9am. Sing along to her favourite animal song CD on the way. 10am Work at home. 12.15pm Collect Liv and we come home for lunch: salad, ham & cheese with bread. My friend Kate joins us for lunch today and we have a bit of snoek* pate, too. Mmmmm. Liv’s not convinced... 2pm Back to work for an hour or so while Liv plays with Bokang (her nanny)and then she comes to join me in my office. She sits at her little table colouring while I work for a bit longer. 4.30pm We take the dogs for a walk to the park and play on the swings for a long time today because Liv’s friend, Tsego is there. Liv picks up some rubbish and puts it in the bin. 6pm Liv has scrambled egg with tomatoes and mushrooms on toast while I cook dinner for me and Ken. Give Liv a bath, then read her a story (The Little Prince) for a bit before she falls asleep at 7pm. Ken and I watch a film and end up going to bed at around 11pm. *snoek is a type of fish
Liz works for Time for Tots Magazine and lives in Kettering, Northants, with her partner Craig and daughter Isabel, 3. 7am Izzy wakes up early and we have porrige and melon for breakfast. The sun is shining so I manage to get a couple of loads of washing done and out on the line while Izzy plays with her dolls house and dances to my 80s collection which she loves! We then do a jigsaw together and eat biscuits in the hammock. 11am Nursery uniform on and off to the corner shop as we’ve run out of milk. It’s Thursday which means Disney Princess magazine day. Izzy insists on riding her Pingu bike there which takes ages... 12.30 Drop Izzy off at nursery on the way back home (she has a cooked lunch there) and then I go for a run in the woods with the dog. 1.30pm Arrive home and head upstairs to my office, with a sandwich, to work on Time for Tots until 5pm when I go to collect Izzy. 5.30pm Craig arrives home from work and plays with Izzy while I clean the bathroom, hoover & start supper.

11 6pm Lazy supper tonight..we sit together to eat beans on toast infront of Charlie & Lola followed by Gigglebiz. 7pm Craig takes the dog out while Izzy and I have a bath. After her warm milk and stories she falls asleep at around 8pm listening to her new story CD. Craig & I do some gardening, bring in the last of the washing & end up enjoying too many beers in the evening sunshine and going to bed really late...
Vanessa runs her own publishing business, Time for Tots, and lives in Kettering, Northants, with her husband Pete and 3 children: Beth 7, Adam 5 and Olivia 17 months. 7am We’re all up just in time to say ‘good morning’ followed by a quick ‘goodbye’ to Daddy before he leaves for his train to work. It’s then breakfast time. 2 or 3 bowls of cereal for Beth and Adam who always have quite an appetite in the morning. They then have to get dressed into school uniform and washed and brushed - the morning is then their own to play, read or watch some morning tv. I dash around getting myself and Olivia washed and dressed, school lunches made and school bags packed. 8.45am Walk to school to drop Beth and Adam off then home to tidy up, stick some washing in and have a quick snack and cuppa. 10am Olivia and I go out to her Kindermusik class which she loves. We see my Mum and nephew there. 11.15am After Kindermusik (which
always puts us in a good mood for the rest of the day!) we head over to the supermarket to do the weekly shop. We have lunch there afterwards as I know Olivia will fall asleep in the car on the way home, 1pm Arrive home. Olivia is asleep so I transfer her to her cot for a nap. I then unpack the shopping and unload the washing machine before sitting down at my PC to catch up with some emails. 3pm Wake Olivia and we walk to school to pick Beth and Adam up. Once home the kids have a quick snack before playing. I try and entice (bribe) them to do a little homework. 5.15pm Tea time. It’s the night for Beth and Olivia’s favourite meal - tuna pasta! 6.15pm All 4 of us jump in the car to take Beth to Brownies. Its then home to bath Adam and Olivia and get them into their PJs before we pick Beth up 7.15pm Back in the car to pick Beth up. 7.30pm Home again and it’s bed time. Putting 3 kids to bed on my own can take a while! Adam gets ready first as he’s the most tired, followed by Olivia and last of all Beth (who likes to read to herself at bedtime). I read to Adam and Olivia before lights out. Once all the kids are in bed, I tidy up before starting tea for me and Pete. 8.30pm Pete arrives home from work and we eat together. 9pm Do some housework followed by Time for Tots work. Bed far too late than is good for me at around midmight.

Bubble Babies: Make a splash this weekend...
A very warm welcome awaits you (not to mention the very warm water!) at Kingsley School Hydrotherapy Pool, Kettering on Saturday mornings. Bubble Babies ‘Baby and Pre-School Swimming Classes’ encourage all members of the family to come along and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Babies love having Grandparents or Auntie watch as they confidently show off their latest skills; there really is no better way to SPLASH into the weekend!
adventure to Treasure Island and swimming through caves and waterfalls! ‘If the principles of good swimming technique are firmly established and everyone is having fun then the learning follows on quite naturally.’ To celebrate their achievements, the mini swimmers receive the STA’s Starfish Badges and Certificates with the older children working through the Stanley First Steps Series awards. Donna, Jack’s mum, enthuses, ‘Jack loves attending each week and can’t wait to get into the pool!’ In October we have another Underwater Photograph session lined up and this exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident in going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims? To book on a class or for more information: Contact: Erika Bird Telephone: 01604 780244 Website: www.bubblebabies.co.uk
Because the water is so warm, babies from as young as newborn are comfortable and relaxed during the half hour lessons. This of course means that parents can relax and enjoy themselves too, focusing all their energies on carefully developing their child’s swimming capabilities. It’s not just the tiny ones that benefit from the ‘tropical-like’ conditions, however! Bubble Babies runs classes for children up to 5 years old and of course parents are always happy to slip into the ‘big bath’!
As classes run on Saturday mornings, there is a dynamic collection of enthusiastic dads who enjoy this wonderful opportunity to bond with their children. A whole range of structured activities, races, games and different equipment each week offers them the chance to share in giving their baby the precious aquatic skills and confidence that lead to a lifelong love and enjoyment of the water. Erika, the founder of Bubble Babies who has been teaching babies to swim for 7 years, looks forward each week to riding her ‘motorbike’ through the waves, ‘white water rafting’ on the To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

A FAMILY DAY OUT Autumn Fun at Fermyn Woods Country Park
We woke up, the sun was shining (hallelujah!) and for the first time in a very long time, my daughter Izzy and I had a day entirely to ourselves. As I’d heard that Fermyn Woods had built a new playground we figured we’d better go and check it out. Sandwiches, wellies, suncream (don’t you love the uncertainty of British weather!), spare pants and dog all packed and ready in the car and we were off. Just 15 minutes drive from Kettering and we arrived then headed to the Skylark Cafe to buy a parking ticket (£2.50 for the whole day). On the cafe door, there are all sorts of activities suitable for kids of all ages advertised. (Bearing in mind we were there during the first week of the school summer holidays). Izzy, 3, decided that she’d like to do the animal post trail, so we set off, map in hand, box of crayons at the ready and £1.50 lighter (includes trail and prize. £1 for trail map only). There were 12 posts with metal castings of woodland animals, their locations clearly marked on the map. With a total of 6 brass rubbings made, we gave up (map reading is not my forte and makes me bad tempered) and claimed our prize anyway. With a brand new squirrel finger puppet, and two big mugs of hot chocolate we settled ourselves on one of the picnic tables outside the cafe. Izzy explored the brand new and completely gorgeous tots play area. All wooden play structures and huts, cute little mushroom seats and soft flooring all nestled under the trees.
Surrounded by a low timber fence, the kids are contained and safe as the parents enjoy a warm bev and look on. Moving on to the main playground, this is just as it always has been. Swings, slides, zip wire... Loads and loads of fun and all the apparatus are in great condition and bark flooring cushions the inevitable tumbles. And the grand finale...the amazing and brand spanking new timber fort complete with ladder entrance and super-fast slide exits. As expected, this was mobbed and Izzy backed out looking startled at one point. There was a very rowdy game of knights and dragons going on but in such a setting up high on a grassy bank overlooking the rest of the park, childhood imaginations can only run riot. Absolutely brilliant. A great day was had at Fermyn and we will all be going back soon. Beautiful countryside, easy walking trails, safe enclosed play areas and a lovely Cafe. We were worn out and very happy at home time. I highly recommend you take a visit. Some complain about the car park charge but I was more than happy to contribute to the upkeep of a really clean, safe and well-planned park. P.S. There are no bins. Bring your own bag for rubbish to take home at the end of the day.
Park and car park open all day, every day. Toilets open 9am to 5pm daily Cafe and shop open 10am to 4pm daily Admission FREE - Car Park £2.50 per day Address: Fermyn Woods Country Park, Lyveden Road, Brigstock, Kettering NN14 3HS Tel: 01536 373 625 Web: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/parks

School Admissions Guide
Applying for a school place for September 2012 2012’ at: www.northamptonshire.gov. uk/admissions. There are also links to school websites and Ofsted reports to help parents make an informed decision for their preferences.
Children living in Northamptonshire who turn four years old between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2012 will start school in September 2012, so parents must apply to Northamptonshire County Council’s School Admissions Team for school places. This is the same for children transferring to junior, middle or secondary school places. Parents must apply to Northamptonshire County Council regardless of whether: • The parent has put the child’s name down at a school • The child lives in the area or attends the local/linked nursery or school • They have an older brother or sister already at the school •They want an Academy or Foundation school Applying for a school place is easy. Northamptonshire County Council’s website has guides on how to apply for primary and secondary school places,(it is advisable for parents to read the oversubscription/ admissions criteria of the school(s) that they are interested in) see ‘Applying for a Primary Place in Northamptonshire for September
Benefits of applying online include: • Open 24 hours a day, 7days a week • Applications can be amended up until the deadline • Peace of mind - receive an automated receipt • No need to worry about finding or posting paperwork • View offer on allocation day instead of waiting for the post Supporting parents... The school admissions team provide extra support for parents to apply online throughout Northamptonshire providing one to one help at Roadshows in schools and nurseries. Also there is limited funding for basic internet training sessions in libraries if the parent applies online at the same time (contact your local library for more information). Details of Roadshows will be published on Northamptonshire County Council’s website www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/ admissions or ring the helpdesk on 01604 236599. Any organisation who feels they would benefit from a Roadshow can email admissions@northamptonshire. gov.uk for details. Application deadlines... Primary applications open from 12th September 2011, closing date is Sunday 15th January but we will accept applications that reach us by Monday continued on the next page...

12 noon 16th January 2012, (secondary applications need to be received by 5pm on 31st October 2011) Applications received after the deadline are processed after all those received on time, so parents are likely to miss out on a school place at their preferred school – last year many younger siblings were late applications which resulted in some parents having to take young children to different schools! Tips for parents who don’t have access to, or experience in using the internet: • Public libraries provide free internet access for accessing information on the county’s web pages such as the schools admission site • Some schools, Sure Start centres and nurseries can also help, either ask at your local provision or contact the
helpline for details of Roadshows in the local area.
• UK online centres provide free access, guidance and courses for using the internet see www. ukonlinencentres com or call: 0800 771234 • www.guide.gov.uk is great for helping people use the internet and an easy process to set up an e-mail address Visit: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/admissions E-mail: admissions@northamptonshire.gov.uk Helpline for parents: 01604 236599

Time for Books: Waterstones Book Review
Waterstones have selected another four books for our reader panel to review this issue. As usual a big thank you to Waterstones and all our reviewers.
For Babies... Peekaboo
Justine Smith & Fiona Land £7.99
For Toddlers... That’s Not My Monster Fiona Watt & Rachel Wells £5.99
Babies and toddlers will love this original tactile playbook from the innovative Baby Touch range. Have fun touching the different textures and playing peekaboo with the large integrated flaps. The bright and bold illustrations are perfect for baby to enjoy. Our parent said: “My baby LOVED this book. The bright and bold colours and different textures and shapes completely entranced him and he squealed with delight when I put his finger on the fluffy bunny’s tummy. I have already recommended this book to my mummy pals at baby group. Can I keep it please??!” Rating: 5/5 Tania, Mum to Archie, age 6 months
This is a fresh new edition of a classic title in the bestselling “That’s not my...” series. This title combines bright, colourful illustrations with a variety of different textures to touch and feel on each page. It helps very young children develop important language and sensory skills. Our (grand)parent said: “1 year old Knox tried each page out and when his older brother said is was about dragons Knox said “Raaaa!” We liked the different feel on each page and the reoccurring mouse but Knox didn’t want to read it again later on.” Rating: 3/5 Caz, Grandmother to Knox, age 1
For Pre-schoolers...
This Season’s Choice
The Tooth Fairy Peppa Pig £6.99
Peppa Pig has lost her first tooth. With the tooth safely under her pillow, Peppa waits for the Tooth Fairy to arrive! Read this delightful story, and use the letter and tooth envelope to wait for the Tooth Fairy yourself. Dr Elephant, the dentist, gives you some handy tips on looking after your teeth Our parent said: “My daughter thinks she has grown out of Peppa Pig, but this had her riveted. Although it’s going to be a while until she loses her milk teeth (I hope), she was interested and amused by the usual Peppa family capers and found the whole idea of the tooth fairy fascinating. This book interesting, educational and a lot of fun. A big thumbs up from us.” Rating: 5/5 Liz, Mum to Isabel, age 3
Meg Comes To School
Helen Nicoll & Jan Pienkowski £5.99 When Meg attends Owl’s school sports day in a very unusual hat, everyone is in for a big surprise! Previously published as “Owl at School”, this humorous Meg and Mog story is reissued with a bright new cover and in a larger, brighter format. Perfect for sharing or reading alone, children will love exploring the colours, sounds and shapes. Our parent said: “I remember loving Meg and Mog books as a child but most of those I read as an adult to my children I find disappointing - sadly this was no exception. A completely bonkers story that is difficult to read to a child because it mostly consists of comments in speech bubbles. You have to ad lib a lot to get the story to make any sense. My son loved the colourful pages and the illustrations though.” Rating: 1/5 Vanessa, Mum to Adam, age 5

A child’s development and learning can be hindered by undiagnosed or uncorrected sight defects so early and regular eye examinations are essential to give them the best chance in life. Visual development takes place between 6 months and 3 years of age. Many defects such as long or short-sightedness, a squint or astigmatism can be inherited. Most problems can be better treated the earlier they are recognised. It is not necessary to wait until a child can recognise letters on a conventional sight test chart. Special measurements and picture tests have been developed which can be used to check the sight of babies and toddlers. Whilst doctors, health visitors and some school nurses carry out vision screening checks, only a comprehensive eye examination by an Optometrist will give an accurate assessment. Under the N.H.S children are entitled to free eye examinations up to the age of 16. Some signs for parents to look out for: Infants: frequent rubbing of the eyes, discomfort in bright light, watery eyes, one eye bigger than the other, eyes turning in or out (a squint), a red spot in one eye Pre-Schoolers: holding books very close, sitting too close to the TV, red eyes or sore looking eyelids, blinking a lot or screwing up the eyes, short attention span, difficulty with eye-hand-body-co-ordination.
