A Day Out at Hamerton Zoo Park

e visited Hamerton Zoo Park in July, with my two children Jake (4) and Maisy (2) along with Grandma. It was our first time but Jake had visited with his School so he was so excited about re-visiting and keen to show us the way. The day we visited (29th July) it was Global Tiger Day, raising awareness and money for Tiger Conservation. At the entry kiosk we purchased a guide which had lots of information about the park and animals as well as my little boy’s favourite item: a map of the Zoo! On arrival we were greeted by a very cute Tiger Mascot. My kids were a little unsure at first but by the end of the day seeing this cute tiger walking around they were all smiles, waving at him and giving him cuddles! Along with the usual attractions this particular day included a raffle, face painting and offered visitors (over 18s) the opportunity to feed the tigers. We made our way down to see the Tigers first as it was soon feeding time and we didn’t want to miss this special experience. They allowed visitors to get up close to the barriers and feed the Tigers meat on a long stick through the fencing. It was amazing to see the beautiful tigers, Lady-Belle and Blizzard, close up and watch them enjoying their dinner. As this activity was for over 18s only, we then made our way round to the sheep and goats so that my children could feed some animals too. Food was available for just 20p and we certainly made sure they were full up before we left, the kids loved it! Making our way around the rest of the park we visited camels, alpacas, wallabies, monkeys, meercats, reptiles, birds and tortoises to name but a few. The park has a very user friendly layout - especially for the parent of a lively 2 year old! It was definitely built with families in mind with easy access and safe walkways guiding you round to each enclosure. The Zoo Park has its own coffee shop as well as undercover picnic areas. We took a picnic and there was plenty

of seating along with highchairs for younger visitors. After lunch the children played in the play area. This consisted of a toddler zone and a larger play area for older children, including a maze which kept the kids and Grandma entertained for ages! The heavens did open and in typical summer holiday fashion we were in a full on storm, with thunder and lightning, before we knew it. However, like true Brits my kids just put their hoods up, splashing about in muddy puddles and playing on the play area regardless. Even though it was raining we could still see the animals as many of the enclosures could be viewed in shelter from the weather. Maisy decided she would like her face painted (for the first time), and we couldn’t visit Global Tiger Day without joining in, so I had my own mini tiger for the rest of the Zoo trip. The staff member coped well with 2-year-old Maisy who kept touching her face during the application and making her own tiger stripes! The outcome was great and she loved being a tiger for the day! Before we left we visited the well stocked and reasonably priced gift shop (something for every budget). The children both chose something as a reminder of their lovely day out. Hamerton Zoo Park was originally a private collection consisting of mostly birds and marmosets. Now in 2013 the Park has grown into a great Northamptonshire attraction, continually growing and developing. It is very easy to travel to and admission prices are good value even better if you visit their website and print off the ‘10% off’ voucher to take with you! It’s super having a zoo so close to home. All the staff were very helpful, friendly and enthusiastic with a real passion for the zoo which came across in the superb customer service. We definitely recommend you go and visit for yourself.

Bubble Babies: Learn vital aquatic skills while having so much fun! Welcome to the Bubble Babies experience!

Treat yourself and your family to a fabulous start to the weekend in beautiful warm water with all the fun and excitement that comes with Bubble Babies swimming classes. Saturday mornings at Kingsley School’s hydrotherapy pool (Kettering) provide the ideal opportunity for children from birth to 5 years old to build up vital aquatic skills with mums, dads, even grandma or grandad all enjoying precious moments and a dynamic, funfilled experience.

Series Awards. By firmly establishing the principles of good swimming technique in an encouraging, happy environment, Bubble Babies aims to create multi-skilled, water-confident, safety-conscious swimmers with a lifelong love, respect and enjoyment of the water.

Underwater Photo Shoot

In November we have another Underwater Photograph session lined up and this exciting event is open to anyone who would like to come along and is confident in going under the water. What better souvenir of those happy times and earliest swims?

Come along and join in the fun!

Teresa, Max’s mum, enthuses ‘I just wanted to take the opportunity to say how good we feel your lessons are. They really hit the right balance between fun and learning in a really great atmosphere.’

Learning in tropical conditions

Devine water and air temperatures make a happy baby (not to mention parent!) and these optimum conditions mean every swimmer is comfortable and relaxed, ready to maximise on their 30 minute session. With the carefully structured lesson filled to the brim with vital skills and activities, baby’s progress is often swift and immensely satisfying for all those involved!

You’ve read all about us, now come along and see Bubble Babies in action! To book a class or for more information contact Erika on 01604 780244 or visit: www.bubblebabies.co.uk. Bubble Babies classes are always very popular so please book early if you would like to join in the adventure! V

Give Dad a go!

Saturdays mean Dad is often around and we have a wonderfully enthusiastic group of fathers who have come to relish the opportunities Bubble Babies provides for them to interact and bond with their children. Before the morning is out they have often swum through whitewater to Treasure Island together, braved caves and waterfalls and even been chased by Mr Shark (inflatable of course!!).

Ten years of experience

With her enthusiasm just exploding with each lesson, Erika the founder of Bubble Babies is always at the centre of the class, encouraging everyone from close quarters: ‘A decade of experience in baby swimming has taught me how important it is to teach by example; I’ll happily star jump into the water, dive through a hoop to pick up a seal stick or float like a jellyfish - anything to inspire and amuse my little protégés!’

Badges and Certificates

To celebrate everyone’s achievements, babies receive the STA’s Starfish Badges and Certificates, while the older children earn the Stanley First Steps To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

Training The Young Stars Of Tomorrow... Hayley Nadine Dance Academy

O

ur well established dance academy has been going from strength to strength over the last 9 years. With pupils working up to a standard where they are being accepted into reputable stage schools, such as Stella Mann, and furthering their education, it is wonderful to see so many of our pupils continuing to work hard to achieve their dream. We are delighted to be able to offer such a variety of subjects from ballet, tap and modern to musical theatre, street and also Irish! We take students from as young as 2½ all the way up to school leavers - and some even stay longer! Our teachers have all worked in the profession and studied in top stage schools such as Italia Conti London. We feel you learn so much from people who have been in the industry and can pass on so much knowledge - with added bonuses when we get our friends out of west end shows such as The Lion King, Starlight Express and 42nd Street to name but a few. The children really do get spoilt by such talent coming in to teach them!

We like to showcase our work each year with our students working towards our end of year show, which is held at The Lighthouse Theatre, as well as dance festivals held across the county and their showcases such as The New Theatre, Oxford. It is never a quiet time at our studio. We’re full of enthusiasm and encouragement to take each one of our students and lead them along their own path of growth, whether this be for confidence or technical skill. Some students just come for fun while others develop into wanting it as a career. Whatever their reaons for coming to our classes, every individual is important to us. You should come along and be part of a fabulous academy where dreams really are at your feet. “Dream, Believe and you will Achieve” is our motto! Classes are held from Mondays to Thursdays at the Manor School in Raunds We have limited spaces available so please call 07896 570365 for our information pack. The Precious Moments Experience...

A

t Precious Moments we believe that it is a real privilege to be involved in preserving the memories of pregnancy, childhood and family life and feel that the love and passion we have for our work is evident in the photographs we take, below we run through the process of how its done... Your photo session takes place in a fun and friendly studio environment – sittings usually take around 45mins. Our aim is to make your little one/s feel as comfortable as possible – so we do things at their pace and work around what they want to do – we find that this relaxed and informal approach produces the most spontaneous and natural portraits. Our photographer will use a range of backgrounds and props to create your portraits, although you are more than welcome to bring any toys or props that you would like your little one/s to be photographed with – a change of clothes is also a great idea too! After your photography session, you will be asked back for a viewing a few days later to preview your images. All you then have to do is pick your favourites! We will then work with you to create your original and vibrant portraits and layouts. Whether it is black and white, colour, traditional, or something more contemporary, it will be unique to you. You can choose from our affordable range of traditional or contemporary frames, canvas prints, and much more to show your beautiful portraits off at their very best. Now you can treasure those Precious Moments forever! For more information or to view examples of our work and products please visit: www.yourpreciousmoments.co.uk. Naming Ceremonies

A

by Meaningful Moments

naming ceremony is a way of welcoming a child to the family and to the world and to bestow a name on the child. During a ceremony the parents will make promises to their child before families and friends and it is a way of celebrating the child’s birth and highlighting the joys and responsibilities of being a parent and gathering in the whole family to help to take care and watch over the child. Children can be any age which is why we can use this to welcome an adoptive child to the family. However most of our ceremonies are carried out around the child’s first birthday We also have Sponsors or Guide Parents for the children, similar to Godparents, who will also make promises to the child. Parents and Grandparents sometimes wish to make a promise too. We include hopes for the child’s future and any other issues which is important to the parents. Since each ceremony is written individually we can include siblings and readings and virtually anything the parents choose. We are not aiming to replace christenings but to provide an option for those parents who would like a celebration for their child but are not religious. Also since there are no legal requirements for ceremonies (neither is there for christenings) we can hold them anywhere, even at home or in the park and we present a certificate at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Celebrate the life of your child with a ceremony for all the family to share.

My experience with Meaningful Moments was everything I had hoped it would be. Pam and Tricia really listened and took on board our desires for the perfect naming ceremony. They were calm, kind and amusing when it was needed. They deal marvellously with my disorganised ways and the result was a beautiful day and a happy 1 year old daughter that had all the attention she deserved and wanted! I cannot recommend this company highly enough. They made it an effortless process and so personal to our family. Top marks.

Nature Tots: What to look out for this Autumn Ramblings of a Country Park Ranger

A

utumn – here’s hoping for an Indian summer and a season of mellow fruitfulness! Autumn is a busy time in the countryside with many animals and birds busy feeding up for winter on berries, nuts and fruits. It is also a season of change. Leaves will be changing; the birds of summer, swifts, swallows and warblers will begin leaving our shores for warmer climates. Your country parks are great places for a wildlife spotting “safari”. Throughout the autumn look out for squirrels finding acorns and hunting for hazelnuts. Early autumn can also see squadrons of dragonflies hunting for insects, right up until the first frosts come. Can you and your child spot the 5 signs of Autumn in our ‘Tot to Spot’ List? Autumn is also a great time to look at different colours in nature and to devise a scavenger hunt for your children. All you need is a list and a collecting bag, then head out to 1 of Northamptonshire’s 5 Country Parks and see if you and your tot can find the following: • A brown leaf • A red leaf • A green leaf • A nut that has not been nibbled • A nut that has been nibbled by an animal • A round stone • A sharp stone • An apple • A piece of litter • Something that will stay the same forever (trick question – nothing will!) Encourage your children to look at the different shapes, colours, sizes of objects in nature.

Nature Tots

Nature Tots sessions will be back in the Northamptonshire Country Parks this Autumn. Sessions as follows: Irchester Country Park – 1st Wednesday of the month Barnwell Country Park – 2nd Wednesday of the month Fermyn Woods Country Park – 2nd Thursday of the month Sywell Country Park – 3rd Tuesday of each month Brixworth Country Park – 3rd Wednesday of the month Sessions start at 10am, and children from 18months up to school age are guided by an experienced Ranger on a short nature trail, followed by craft activities tailored to each season. Pre-booking is required for all sessions – please phone Ranger Jo on 07703 160878. Each session is £3 per child if booked in advance (£3.50 on the day), which includes all activities and refreshments.

Tot to Spot

Can you and your tot spot these 5 signs of Autumn: 1.

A squirrel

2.

A brown dragonfly

3.

Red berries

4.

A yellow leaf

5.

Fungi or mushrooms

Applying for a Primary School Place

T

he start of the new school year sees many parents across the county on the search for the right primary school for their child. Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) is running a campaign targeting all parents with children who turn 4 years old between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014, to help raise awareness of the right time to apply for their child’s school place and how to do it. There are many myths about applying for a child’s primary school place which the county council aims to stamp out as part of this campaign. Applications open on Monday 9th September 2013 and all parents MUST apply for their child’s primary school place regardless of whether: • They have put their child’s name down at their preferred school • The child lives in the area near the school • They have an older sibling already at the school • The child currently attends a nursery provision on the school site

How to Apply

Applying for a school place is easy. Log on to Northamptonshire County Council School Admissions Website at: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/admissions The website gives access to the school application form and the booklet: ‘Applying for a Primary School Place in Northamptonshire’ for general information on schools and the admissions process, choosing preferences, how to apply, important dates to be aware of and links to school websites and Ofsted reports. It is advisable for parents to read the oversubscription/admissions criteria of the school(s) they are interested in.

Parents Information Events

Everyone is invited to visit these events to discuss the admissions process with Schools Admissions staff and ask any questions they have, or receive one to one help to actually apply online. Reiki for Healing, Balance & Flow

L

ife can be very busy as a parent. So much to do, for family and home, that our personal energies can sometimes feel somewhat depleted. Reiki is an ancient Japanese form of natural healing, working on an energetic and emotional level within the body. Its gentle energies help to assist the body in healing itself, re-aligning the Chakras, releasing unwanted energy blockages and replenishing our energy reserves within. Rei’ means ’ Universal - All Around Us’ ‘Ki’ means ‘Life-Force Energy’ As a Usui Reiki Master Teacher and Healer, I feel privileged to have worked with natural energy Reiki healing with clients and students for over 12 years. Reiki treatments are deeply relaxing and very effective for stress relief, anxiety, grief or emotional traumas, alongside all aspects of healing, helping to promote balance and a sense of well-being. Reiki allows your body to relax completely and deeply, enabling the body to self-heal which is extremely effective for stress ~ physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The practice of Reiki and self-healing is something that anyone can learn and develop. My next Reiki level One workshop weekend is on Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October in Islip. To find out more information on the course or to book a Reiki Treatment please e-mail harshani@mindbodywellbeing. co.uk or visit : http://www.mindbodywellbeing.co.uk
