of a Life-changing new Business

S

peaking on BBC Radio Northampton recently, Kate Simpson described how she and her husband Ian took a break from corporate life to set up a thriving new Northamptonshire-based business following tragic circumstances. Following the death of her father and sister within three months of each other (both from cancer), former retail manager with John Lewis Partnership and mother of two young children, Kate took a career break only to nearly lose her own life to Lymphoma in October last year. Her husband Ian (a senior bank employee) cared for her to a state of recovery after which they started Big Bear Hire together, a vacation equipment rentals company based in Brigstock, on 1 May 2015. Although a relatively new business, Big Bear Hire is taking advantage of Northamptonshire’s business support offer which has resulted in a major upturn in new business entrepreneurs across the county. “The best thing my husband and I have ever done!” Having recently been appointed as a Thule Dealer and with the help of Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP), the company’s aim is to establish new premises and create further jobs within the next 6-12 months. The 5-star feedback from customers appears to validate Big Bear Hire’s ambitions. Kate said: “Five months of chemotherapy was a life-changing experience. You really have time to think and whereas you might have previously been cautious, you are more inclined to say why not and give it a go. Setting up Big Bear Hire is the best thing my husband and I have ever done!” Tim Bagshaw, Head of Business and Innovation, NEP, said: “Having a great idea and the determination to succeed together with Northamptonshire’s wellpositioned access to UK and overseas customers are major advantages for local entrepreneurs like Kate and Ian. With their former track record in the corporate sector combined with the advice, training and funding support available from NEP and all-in-one business support services such as the Northamptonshire Growth Hub, I wish Big Bear Hire every success for their future growth.”

ene Valley Railway’s big news for the coming season is undoubtedly the return to the railway of Thomas after an absence of 2 years while he was rebuilt. Holidaying with Young Children

Tips and advice on choosing a holiday

Sponsored by Hendra Holiday Park, Cornwall www.hendra-holidays.com H O L I D AY PA R K NEWQUAY - CORNWALL

Win a Family Holiday at Hendra Holiday Park! See page 57.

Choosing a holiday is a whole different ball game once you’ve had children. Gone are the days when you can throw a few things in a bag and jet off to a hot climate to spend 2 weeks relaxing on a beach. With children a lot more thought needs to go into booking and planning your holiday to ensure both you and your child(ren) have a great time and come home feeling relaxed rather needing another holiday!

Things to consider: R The time of year you are going away

Some places can get VERY hot and also very busy at certain times of the year which can be a nightmare with young children. In hot climates you spend the whole time trying to keep them cool and stop them from burning. With busy resorts you can find yourself spending a considerable amount of time queuing (queues and young children do not mix) or fretting about losing them in the crowd.

R How you will get there and how long it will take

Long journeys and young children do not mix well either! They tend to get bored and restless. Try and avoid long journeys by the same mode of transport if you can. If a long journey is broken up, e.g. an hour or two in a car followed by an hour or 2 in a plane or boat then it is more bearable.

R What you will need to take

If your child is the age when you need to take a lot of equipment e.g. steriliser, pushchair, nappies then you need to make sure you have the space, either in your luggage or your vehicle, to transport it. If travelling by car you can always hire a roof box (see www.bigbearoutdoor.co.uk) or you may even be able to hire the equipment itself at your destination. Disposable items, like nappies, you should be able to buy there.

R What there is to do at your destination

You will need to keep your child entertained on holiday without the aid of most of their toys. Is there enough there to do that? Regardless of the weather? Look for places that have a park and other children’s activities close by, both indoor and outdoor. Beaches are good as there are

umpteen different things you can do on the beach - build sandcastles, play ball games, paddle in the sea, jump waves etc. Resorts with family evening entertainment are great for getting a partial night out that everyone enjoys.

R Is the accommodation safe

The safety of your child is paramount so think about potential hazards and whether you can protect your child from them e.g. deep water, balconies, steps etc. With young children beaches tend to be a safer option than resort pools where there’s a risk of the child falling in.

R Is it a family-friendly resort

Will there be other families there? Holidaying with other families with similar age children can make life considerably easier. Trying to keep children quiet in predominantly adult areas is quite a challenge and does not make for a relaxing holiday for anyone.

12 Tips and advice on choosing a holiday continued...

R What you will do at night when your child is asleep

Young children generally go to bed very early so what will you do after that? If you’re all in 1 hotel room then options are limited! We recommend selfcatering accommodation with more than 1 room.

R What the food is like

Children can be very fussy. Will they eat the local food? Self catering is often the best option so you can feed your child what they want, when they want it.

R Vaccinations and Insurance

Certain types of holiday/destinations may require you and your child to have vaccinations before you go and/or special holiday insurance. If you think this may be the case make sure you look into it well in advance.

R Availability of childcare

If having some time to yourself, just you and your partner, is important to you then look for a resort that has a kids club and/or babysitting service.

Looking after your child’s feet Top Tips from Funky Lil Feet

L

ooking after a growing child’s foot is very important and Funky Lil Feet together with Start Rite have compiled some helpful tips below to ensure your child gets off to the best start.

uu Barefoot is considered best for tiny toes but for warmth a loose fitting pram shoe can be worn. Check socks and babygro’s are the correct size as if too small this can cause toes to curl resulting in damage to the growing bones. Remember that at this young age their nerve endings are not fully developed so they cannot tell you that their feet are being squashed. Once your child is at the crawling and/or cruising stage you can protect your babies feet from knocks and scrapes on hard floors with a pair of specially fitted pre-walkers. These are very soft and flexible and feature a special rubber bumper for protection and grip. Start Rite’s range of Tots are ideal for this and come in several width fittings and are priced at around £25. uu For first walkers an ideal shoe should be soft and flexible but offer stability and protection to the feet as they grow. Leather Uppers that let the foot breathe and a fully adjustable fastening to enable a good secure fit are equally important. Synthetic shoes do not allow the foot to breathe properly and can lead to conditions such as athletes foot. uu Have your children’s shoes checked every 6-8 weeks, and for school age children we recommend every 3-4months as their growth should have slowed down to around a shoe size per year. uu Childrens feet are a different shape to an adults and reputable shoe manufacturers design their shoes accordingly to allow enough space in the toe box to prevent deformity of the bones. A trained fitter will be able to measure and assess every individual child to ensure only the best fitting pair of shoes are sold!

uu 70% of foot problems are caused from wearing the wrong footwear. The majority of this is caused by wearing the wrong sized shoes as a child. Each foot has 26 bones, 19 muscles, 100 ligaments and over a thousand nerve endings. They need to be loved! Funky Lil Feet has a team of fully trained fitters, most of whom are parents themselves, and we specialise in fitting children with special requirements. Let us love your childrens feet like you do! in er mm ow Su ls n g & da rin an Sp & S s oe Sh

Firetree studio Boutique The beautiful new home for Firetree photography

K

yra from Firetree Photography has a great reputation locally for her natural bluebell location and child portraits, we are thrilled to learn she has just opened a new studio, ‘Firetree Studio Boutique’ set in the grounds of The Manor in Tur Langton. We asked her why she chose this location and what made her decide to open a studio: “The Manor is perfect, if you haven’t been it has a little courtyard which I share with a few other businesses, a Coffee Shop, Pilates Studio, Hair and Beauty.... It really is a lovely atmosphere. I was looking for somewhere quiet that I could photograph newborn babies, children and families, where parents would feel at home and relaxed and this location ticked all the boxes. It overlooks the countryside and is completely detached so parents can chill on my sofa and the children can make as much noise as they like. I also have the added bonus of being able to use the beautiful grounds of The Manor for location portraits, I even have Llamas as neighbours! Having the studio has allowed me to spread my wings and bring my lighting experience and art background back into my portraits, something that I have been longing to do for a while. I still run my lifestyle portraits from home and my bluebell wood shoots are still running at the same location but now Firetree Photography has a very beautiful home!” If you are interested in visiting The Manor, Kyra is having a free open event on the 5th March between 10am and 4pm.

Clubs & Classes

Featured Class: Sing and Sign

S

ing and Sign is Britain’s original, longest running and best loved baby signing programme. What is the aim of the classes?

We help you and your baby enjoy the process of learning to talk with: • less frustration • better communication • and more fun!

Talk us through a typical class

We think the best way to learn baby signing is in a fun and relaxed way, through actions songs and rhymes. This is such an easy way to remember the signs it doesn’t feel like learning at all! As well as many familiar and original songs, puppets, props and pictures are enjoyed to inspire your baby’s interest and illustrate the signs. We ensure our groups are kept small to encourage learning in a safe and intimate environment.

How do classes benefit children?

Sing and Sign benefits babies and toddlers by: • Helping to understand your baby’s needs, thoughts and ideas • Reducing frustration (for baby and parent) • Enhancing early vocabulary and understanding • Encouraging the development of speech • Enriching your baby’s relationships • Building their confidence and self-esteem • Stimulating your baby’s intellectual and emotional development

Can baby signing inhibit a baby’s instinct to talk?

Gestures are not a replacement for speech, when using a sign you always say the accompanying word. Your baby’s first words will be given a real boost by baby signing.

What ages are the classes for?

Pause for Thought..

Teaching mindfulness and

meditation skills to

Children

T

he ability to maintain a state of mindfulness and the ability to meditate are hugely important skills for human beings. In this day and age, where life seems to be all about how important it is to achieve and succeed, in a society that focusses on our need to eat better food, exercise more, give up addictions and generally be better people, there is little time for us to just sit quietly and be grateful for everything that we are and all that we have now, in the present moment. Mindfulness and meditation skills are woefully absent from generally accepted lifestyles and, therefore from our educational curriculum. Babies and small children are naturally very mindful creatures, happy to just play, free of consideration about what

they ‘should’ be doing; super observant of details of the world around them which are, to them, novel. However they immediately begin to grow out of this way of being with socialisation. It is therefore important that we begin to teach them elements of mindfulness and meditation early on with the aim that these things will hopefully become a natural part of their adult daily routines and they will lead happier and more stress free, selfaware lives. In the process of doing this we will also be teaching ourselves new, better habits too so it’s win-win! Here are some ideas that you can use with your children to teach them (and yourselves), via play and quality time spent together, what it is to live in a mindful way:

Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

31

Awareness of the rise and fall of different emotions Part of a mindful state is being aware that feelings come and feelings go. The act of attaching too strongly to any particular feeling can only cause torment whereby negative feelings cannot be released and positive feelings are mourned when they become absent. Feelings should be allowed to come and go freely and dealt with appropriately. To facilitate learning of this skill try setting up small areas in entirely different places in your house relating to each emotion, that you/your children can go to as appropriate. For example, you might have an area for happiness, one for anger or worry, one for sadness and another for contemplation (quiet time). Colour theming these areas, even if only with a coloured shape stuck on the wall will help children identify with the nature of the emotion they are feeling. Appropriate activities can be placed in these areas to help the child deal with the emotion. Ideas abound on the internet for activities/ props to provide for an angry or frustrated child such as glitter in a bottle of water which they must shake and wait till the glitter settles. In the happy area you could provide drawing materials and paper for children to add images of their happy thoughts to the surrounding walls or some noise making toys with which they can express their unbounded joy. The choice of the theme and activity for each area is up to you. Do some research. A company called ‘Relax Kids’ are one amongst many which provide some excellent materials for this purpose. The main point of this task is that it encourages children to be consciously aware of how they are feeling and act appropriately by visiting the relevant area. Keeping some sort of tally of when your child has visited each area, maybe by getting them to add a marble to a pot each time will also give you an indication of the overall emotional state of your child over a given time period.

Controlled breathing

Meditation and mindfulness are greatly assisted by an awareness in the flow of breath in and out of your body. Children attention can be brought to this with the following activity.

Choose some very light material that is large enough in size not to be able to enter the mouth completely. Lay on your back in a comfortable position (maybe using a yoga mat or other padding) and hold the material an inch or so from your mouth. Breathe in deeply then blow the material up into the air. The game is to see how high you can get your material into the air just by blowing it. If the body, head and neck are in good alignment and the breath out is released slowly but powerfully then you should be able to make the material rise and fall to the same spot over your face. Encourage your child to take their in-breath through their nose and guide them about how to breathe out in this controlled manner and turn it into a competition to see who can get the highest and most accurate result. It is important that an adult always be present during this activity in order to offset any risk of choking or suffocating, especially in younger children.

Awareness of sensations in the physical body

Choose a range of different textured objects such as a feather, a smooth stone, an emery board and a soft piece of cloth. Ask your child to close their eyes, select one of the objects and touch it to an exposed area of the child’s skin. The child’s task is to name the part of the body that you have touched and the object they think you have used. Randomise the objects you use on different areas of the body and mix it up a little by occasionally using two objects in two areas simultaneously. Variations on this game include doing such things as gently moving your child’s hair or giving them a light hug whilst their eyes are closed and asking them what they think you are doing. Don’t prompt your child to respond to the touches you give but wait for them to notice, ensuring they have understood beforehand that this is what they are supposed to do. If your child does not verbally respond to the touch, use the prompt ‘Do you feel anything?’ rather than ‘’What do you feel?’. Incidentally, this can also be a pretty entertaining game between consenting adults too....

32

Mindful awareness of surroundings

This game is particularly useful as an in car game but is also good for use when taking long walks in the countryside. Make a treasure hunt list that children can just tick off with a pencil. Make the things that you add to the list fairly easy to spot without the need to search by deviating from the path you are walking in order to search e.g. a cloud that looks like an animal, a white flower, a stone with a smooth edge. The point of this task is that your child engages their visual observation skills and is watchful rather than excitable and inclined to run around. Offer extra points for objects found within reaching distance of the child’s position. Additionally, bonus points can be offered for the observation of the most interesting smell and sound observed and the most unusual sight recorded on their paper e.g. the sight of a bird picking up a twig to add to it’s nest (if they are too young to write, you can keep their record for them in a small notebook using one page per participant. Encourage your child to remember that of they become too excited with this task then their eyes, ears and nose may miss things that could earn them points.

Stillness

This is a game for bath time and requires the use of bubble bath. With your child at one end of the bath, get them to swish the bubbles of the bath away from their body. A particularly useful motion for doing this is when they sit with their bottoms in between their folded legs so that their heels are by their hips (many children like to sit like this anyway). From this position, if your child moves their legs in and out in an open and close scissor motion it creates a wave like effect that pushes the bubble away from their body. The game is then to sit as still as possible until the motion of the water subsides and the bubble bath drifts back towards them again. Once the bubbles touch their skin again, they are free to resume movement. During this time, any movement that the child makes is likely to increase the wave motion and push the bubbles further away from them so if they want to ‘win’ it’s in their interest to sit still. This is a particularly good game as the gently warmth of a bath is the perfect environment for encouraging stillness though you might want to make sure that the water is fairly shallow or you’ll probably wind up with a pool on your bathroom floor!! On a final note, have fun! These games make for small, beautiful moments of calm togetherness and educational fun that teach an important life-skill so relish them!!! If your child does not feel like playing or is resistant to your suggestions then just shrug your shoulders and let it be. Most of the time, even the most resistant of children will be prepared to engage in a task if they think you really aren’t going to make an issue out of it if they don’t. As extra encouragement you could also begin playing some of these games, especially the breathing one and the treasure hunt one, on your own. Your child’s curiosity is bound to be piqued sooner or later and, in the meantime, you’re getting meditative practice yourself in the most amusing of ways. Just finding the time to engage in these tasks is an act of learning to create space for yourself for mindfulness and playtime is something that everyone deserves.

Grass

Tuesday 29th March, 11.30am & 2pm

Grass will liven up the Lab at The Core on Tuesday 29th March at 11.30am (recommended for ages 2-4) and 2pm (recommended for ages 4 and above). Tickets – priced £6.50* each. The running time is approximately 40 minutes plus 15 minutes ‘messy’ playtime.

Tortoise & The Hare

Tuesday 12th April, 11am, 2pm & 4pm

Second Hand Dance present Grass, a quirky and interactive dance show perfect for children 2 years and above, coming to The Core at Corby Cube’s studio space on Tuesday 29th March.

Look down. What are you standing on? Grass wants children to explore the ground and all of its wriggling inhabitants with a show featuring worms, slugs, snails, spontaneous outbreaks of ant dancing and plenty of obscure insect-related facts. Through the use of performance, puppetry and projection, Grass aims to inspire children to look closely at the world around them, to get mucky and play. Second Hand Dance is a collaborative company, creatively led by Rosie Heafford, which works with artists from a variety of disciplines to produce participatory and interactive dance experiences. They strive to create extraordinary and surprising dance works for everyone to enjoy in any space including theatres, libraries and parks. Lerato Dunn of Bristol City Council said “I thought it was great and the set was beautiful. I loved the audience participation and the gentle way in which they engaged people. I laughed out loud a lot, it was educational and I know a lot more about different creepy crawlies than I did before”.

Northern Ballet comes to The Core at Corby Cube with its new short ballet for children, Tortoise & the Hare. Tortoise & the Hare is a re-imagining of Aesop’s much-loved fable of a Tortoise who, tired of being teased for his slowness, challenges a speedy Hare to a race. Lasting approximately 40 minutes, the ballet has been created especially for children and young families to experience and enjoy live dance, music and theatre. Daniel de Andrade, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director of Short Ballets for Small People, said: “These ballets are classic tales beautifully retold through dance and are the perfect introduction to ballet for children and young families. This latest production will provide a wonderful opportunity for children and their families to enjoy live performances designed especially for them and will hopefully inspire a new-found love for dance, music and theatre.” This delightful children’s ballet, recommended for all children from 18 months upwards, can be seen at The Core at 11am, 2pm and 4pm on Tuesday 12 April. Tickets are £8.50*, with concessions at £6.50.

Time for Mum Because a happy Mum is a better Mum!

meet our winter

‘Mum in a

Million’

T

hank-you to everyone who nominated a local Mum for our Winter “Mum in a Million” competition. After careful consideration we selected super busy Mum Rachael from Corby as our winner. Rachael wins a luxury Experience Day for 2 people at award winning Ragdale Hall Health Hydro and Thermal Spa in Leicestershire. Mum of 5 Rachael was nominated by her friend Aaron. Here’s why Rachael is a ‘Mum in a Million’ (in Aaron’s words):

}

I would like to nominate my friend Rachael , she is a Mum of 5 children (aged between 2 and 12), has a disabled partner and works full time in a care home. I am nominating her as she is doing a great job and never has time for herself, taking care of all the needs of 5 children and her disabled partner, who isn’t able to do much to help. She is busy from getting up early morning to 10pm at night. I really think she deserves this treat so she has some time to relax and enjoy something for herself. Thanks for reading.

Beauty Tips for Busy mums

H

By samantha from sanctuary of Beauty, Desborough

ello to all you special Mummies, I hope you take inspiration from my write-ups and hope it benefits you. Most of our time is dedicated to our families, which is all part of being a Mummy, but I’m here to make sure you look after you too! The tips and advice I will share are quick and easy to fit into your day-to-day routine. Being a Mum myself I know how little time we all have, and how the best set plans are soon changed! A child’s needs change as they develop and grow, but as their needs change don’t forget you still have your needs. It is easy to get caught up in today’s society that is governed by labels, the can and can’ts. You still need to remember you are still you! Knowing who you are can sometimes be difficult, due to external factors that have moulded you, but the true you is in there.

Top Tip: To never forget you and don’t let others govern what is “best” for you. When your little ones are sleeping or having some chill out time, get a pen and paper and write whatever comes to mind. It hasn’t necessarily got to be what your interests are or what it is makes you you, just write away! This releases emotions, and any negativity in there that has caused you to be governed are released slowly for you to then discover what it is that you truly enjoy! For more information and/or support please pop in to the Sanctuary of Inner Beauty where we can guide you to your inner beautifulness! Don’t forget to pick up your next issue for Time for Tots, where I will be giving you more top tips for Mum’s on the move. Take Care

Business mum: ally sharratt

From The earth works Cosmetics (TewC) name: Ally Sharratt Family: 2 children. Joni 7, Scarlett 4 Description of your business: TEWC is a business my husband (Jeff) and I set up together. We hand make a natural skin care range for retail and for professional beauty salons and therapists. how long have you been in business? TEWC has been running since 2013 but I had been experimenting with making and developing products well before this. why did you decide to start? Natural skin care is really important to me and my family which was instigated when I became pregnant with Joni. You immediately get given a long list of food you can no longer eat, which made me wonder what about all the stuff that gets absorbed by my skin? I started researching skin care ingredients and was shocked to find out about some of the nasty chemicals I had been putting on to my skin. I started looking at natural skin care and then I started experimenting with my own concoctions. My family and friends were only too willing to test my products and it seemed I had found my niche! Jeff was made redundant from his previous job late 2012 and that really gave us the push to make a go of the business with a view to potentially working for ourselves. Although we are both still employed (Jeff is a full time design technician and I am a part time legal assistant) we hope one day to both be working full time on TEWC. At the moment Jeff deals with all of the design work, website and strategic planning, which leaves me to the product making, meeting clients and general day to day running of the business.

what do you like about it? I love making the products themselves and creating new ones too! I love my “making days” where I can switch on the radio and sing along to the tunes whilst doing what I love. Also I have met so many new and likeminded people and made new friends. how well does it fit in with family life? Working for yourself can be so flexible, I can still take the girls to school and collect them and then when they’re in bed I can catch up with the dreaded paperwork! what do you find are the disadvantages? Don’t let anybody tell you it’s easy working for yourself, you have to get up and get motivated even when you’ve had no sleep or if you’re feeling poorly! You also have to be a quick learner and teach yourself to do things like accounts! But it’s worth it in end and you will gain a real sense of achievement and self-esteem. what advice would you give to other mums thinking of working for themselves? I would say as long as you start a business doing something you have a real passion for and you keep your aspirations realistic, you will do well!
