T

ime for tots is 10! Our very first issue was published exactly 10 years ago this spring in March 2008. It’s hard to believe we’ve been going that long, especially when you look at some of our early front cover models and what they look like now! To celebrate this milestone anniversary we’ve done just that on pages 28 to 29. Inspired by the National Trust’s “50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾” campaign we’ve come up with our own “40 things to do in Northamptonshire before your child starts school”. We’ve divided the activities into seasons and will bring you 10 in every issue this year. Some activities you may have done already with your children but we hope it gives you some new ideas. Turn to page 8 to see our ‘10 things to do in spring’. Our Events Calendar, starting on page 10, is bursting with other activities to enjoy throughout spring. Our special “Easter Eggcitement for the whole family” feature on pages 12 to 14 has lots of ideas for the Easter holidays. Enter our competition on page 53 and you could even win a family ticket to Rockingham Castle’s Easter event! Have a wonderful Mothering Sunday on the 11th March all Mums out there! Until the summer.....

The Barbara Hooton School of Dancing

C

ongratulations to Barbara Hooton celebrating 50 years of being a qualified dance teacher! Barbara was presented with a certificate from The National Association of Teachers of Dancing, to mark her 50 years of dedicated service, at a drinks party last November. Talking about the celebration Barbara said: “It was lovely to have Wendy Betts and Nicola Large there, as I have taught them since they were 7 and 4 years old and of course they teach with me now. My daughters Nicola and Katy are dancers and my granddaughters who dance too were also there. Even my husband does adult tap! So it was a lovely Barbara Hooton School of Dancing affair”.

40 Things to do in Northamptonshire... ...before your child starts school Inspired by the National Trust’s “50 things to do before you’re 11 3/4” campaign, we thought we’d bring you “40 things to do in Northamptonshire before your child starts school”; as those early years before full time school are so precious and there are so many wonderful places to visit in this county! We’ve divided the 40 things up into seasons so will bring you 10 each issue starting with....

10 things to do in

Bottle feed a lamb

3

Walk among the treetops at Salcey Forest

4

Play hide and seek in the dens and tunnels in Brock Wood at Sywell Country Park

Both West Lodge Rural Centre near Desborough and Mini Meadows Farm in Welford offer the opportunity to bottle feed their lambs in early spring.

Go on an Easter Egg hunt

Many of the county’s wonderful venues host Easter Egg Hunts - see our ‘Easter Eggcitement for the Whole Family’ feature on pages 12 to 14 for where to go this Easter. Or you could just hold your own egg hunt in your garden or local park!

Salcey Forest’s Tree Top Way takes you to 15 metres above the woodland floor! Walk all the way to the top where there is a viewing platform providing stunning views across the forest and beyond to Northampton. There is also an adventure play area at Salcey Forest, a cafe and trails to take part in so a fun afternoon out with the family.

One of my favourite places to take my children when they were small. They had loads of fun playing hide and seek and building dens in Brock Wood. There are so many other things to do at Sywell too with an indoor and outdoor toddler play area, a sand and water play area, a butterfly garden to hunt for butterflies and a cafe for ice creams and snacks. Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

5

9

Hold a bunny (and other small, furry creatures!) at a local farm

As well as the bigger farm animals, both West Lodge Rural Centre and Mini Meadows have smaller, fluffy animals, such as bunny rabbits and guinea pigs, for children to stroke and hold. Cuddle Corner at West Lodge has a timetable of activities each day for children to get closer to the animals.

6 7 8 9

Attend a Parent & Tot Swimming Session

Most of our local pools run parent & toddler swimming sessions which provide a great opportunity for some one to one fun with your child; with toys and floats in the pool and often nursery rhymes lead by pool staff. We particularly like Corby East Midlands International Pool as it has a toddler area too complete with ship!

Go on a spring scavenger hunt

Our country parks provide fantastic locations for going on scavenger hunts with your children on a beautiful spring day. Come up with your own list of items for your child to find or download a scavenger hunt from Northamptonshire Country Park’s website: www.northamptonshireparks.co.uk

Feed the ducks

A simple but enjoyable activity to do with your toddlers on a spring day! Barnwell and Sywell Country Parks both have opportunities to feed the ducks and you can pick up some corn from their visitor centres too (which is much better for ducks than bread).

10

Visit Thomas the Tank Engine and friends at Nene Valley Railway

Ok not strictly in Northamptonshire we realise but not that far from the border and a great day out with little Thomas fanatics. Visit Thomas with his travelling post office in April or on his big adventure in May. See details in our Events Calendar.

Have a forest adventure on the Gruffalo orienteering course at Top Lodge Fineshade Woods

The Gruffalo is a firm favourite with preschoolers and this fun orienteering course provides an opportunity for children to enjoy a physical and decision making activity in one as they hunt for the 12 Gruffalo markers on the map. Pick up the orienteering sheet and a map from the lodge, for ÂŁ1.50.

Infant Aquatics

Baby and Toddler Swim School

So much more than just a splash around!

A

t Infant Aquatics we pride ourselves on our approach and are very passionate about what we do! A lot has changed in the baby swimming industry over the last few years and we have ensured that we are ahead of the game with new advice and techniques. We are all about relationships, creating a lovely, nurturing environment for you to bond and create strong connections with your baby, which continue well after the swimming class has finished. We are child led, this means we work at the child’s pace, we don’t force or pressure. We allow them to explore, find their confidence and learn. We have great belief in the power of positivity, if baby has a positive experience, the body releases all the feel good happy hormones which leave a warm and contented feeling with them, they love this feeling and want more of it. They want to repeat the experience. Whereas if baby has a negative experience, the body releases the opposite hormones and chemicals, feelings of being fearful, scared and anxious. These don’t feel good and leave a baby upset. They won’t want to repeat it.

We understand the different development stages of babies and toddlers, both physically and mentally. Our teaching techniques are designed with them in mind, as baby changes so do our holds and activities, making it varied and progressive. So it seems simple to us, we create lots and lots of positive experiences in the pool, using development stages to guide us and supporting the parent enabling them to support their baby. Our aim is that parents and their little one are happy, supported, progress with love and gain confidence. Early swimming (and confident submerging) comes as a bi-product of what we do. Classes are now held across Northamptonshire, Rutland and Bedfordshire. Please contact us for information on new courses starting soon.

pratton Hall is an independent, co-educational day prep school in Northamptonshire for children aged 4-13 years. At Spratton Hall, we believe that the best start we can give children to their education, is to provide a wonderfully exciting learning environment, which has been closely matched to their developing needs, and the support of adults who are committed to getting to know each unique individual. We reach out to nurseries and pre-schools, we listen to parents and most importantly, through a carefully thought-out induction programme, we spend time getting to know children prior to their starting with us in September. We want to know what fascinates and inspires your child, what excites them and how they learn best, so that, within the beautiful surroundings of Spratton Hall, and under our nurturing and positive guidance, they truly blossom and thrive. Starting school is a hugely exciting and important milestone for children, and their families. Birth Practitioner and member of Northants Doulas Antenatal Course Facilitator Postnatal Practitioner and Mother and Baby Yoga Teacher

Women choose a doula to support them for many reasons: • It may be their first pregnancy and they would like a trained doula to help them with decision making and birth preferences. • They may have developed a fear of labour and birth (tokophobia). • Perhaps they had a difficult labour or an experience during a previous birth that is causing concern and anxiety in their current pregnancy. A doula will provide support to a woman’s birth partner by helping them feel informed and useful during the labour and birth. Discounted fees available for NCT members, clients from NCT antenatal classes and members of the Rushden Positive Birth Movement group Contact me today to arrange an initial discussion

Pregnancy & Birth

What is a Doula?

Article supplied by Gabby Matthews, Birth and Postnatal Doula

doulas (plural noun)

www.nct.org.uk/courses/antenatal/antenatal-services/doula

doula

‘a woman who gives support, help, and advice to another woman during pregnancy and during and after the birth’

P

eople often ask “what is a doula?” or “why do women choose a doula?” A quick response can be as simple as ‘a doula supports a women through her labour and birth’. A more expansive reply would be to list the incredible benefits of having a doula at your side during birth helps women feel cared for, protected and respected during their birth experience. A doula really listens to a woman’s birth preferences. By reflecting on the woman’s needs she can work beside the mother and nurture her natural instincts. A woman may decide on doula support as she has had a previous birth from which she carries memories of trauma and loss of control. It could be she is having her first baby and as the pregnancy progresses, rather than feelings of excitement, fear of the actual labour and birth are causing anxiety and unrest (known as tocophobia). Doulas come in so many shapes and sizes, they may be the perfect ‘earth mother’, trendy and jazzy, mature and calming, relaxed and informed. They are as individual as the characters in the circle of friends you choose. The most important factor when seeking a doula is to really consider what it is you want the doula to provide. Try and meet a few, then take time to consider who you feel the most comfortable with. You should aim to find a doula that makes you smile, fills you with confidence and offers the warmth and companionship you will need during your birth experience for it to be as successful and rewarding as possible. In the hospital environment doulas will confidently discuss the procedures the midwives and birth professionals are suggesting to ensure the mother is treated with dignity and respect. She will support and discuss procedures and pain relief options with birth partners enabling them to understand what is happening and why, and encourage them to support their birthing partner in a ‘hands on’ positive way. At a home birth a doula can wear many hats. She will ensure the labouring women has the space and time to work through her labour stages undisturbed. She can distract and care for any siblings who are home for the early labour stages. She may arrange for them to be collected or cared for by relatives or friends acting as the link between relatives and children as birth progresses.

In hospital or at home doulas provide continuity of care for the entire duration of labour and following birth. She will assist until the mother is settled and baby is feeding or having skin to skin. A doula will provide the labouring woman with the peace of mind to just centre her entire self on helping her baby to have the best opportunity to birth safely in a calm environment, often complementing the midwives by providing massage and breathing exercises. Evidence on Doulas by Rebecca Dekker PhD, RN, APRN of EvidenceBasedBirth.com Quote: ‘There have been 26 randomised trials that tested the effects of continuous labour support on more than 15000 people giving birth. Overall, people who receive continuous support are more likely to have a normal vaginal birth and less likely to have pain medication, negative feedback about childbirth, and caesareans. In addition, their labours are shorter and their babies are less likely to have complications at birth or be admitted to NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). In these studies, the best results occurred when the continuous support was provided by a trained doula – someone who was not a staff member at the hospital and not part of the birthing mothers social network’.

The Role of Your Health Visitor

“I bet your job is lovely isn’t it, cuddling babies all day”

my friend said to me last night. Yes my job is pretty great; its different every day, its full of challenges, has enough scope to be creative with how I work with my families, and yes in fact I do sometimes get to cuddle a baby. My friend’s question got me thinking; she like you and me has young children, and yet she doesn’t really know what a health visitor does. Do you know for example that a health visitor is a qualified nurse or midwife, or both, who has completed additional qualifications in specialist public health nursing? This means that we are experts in the health and development of small children. In Northamptonshire we work in a 0-19 team and our team of Health Visitors, Community Nursery Nurses, Specialist School Nurses, Community Nurses and School Nurse assistants deliver the public health service from the antenatal period right through to when your child turns 19 years old. Within our service we also have specialist teams including Children’s Weight Management Specialists and Healthy Living Advisers, and Infant Feeding Specialists. Your journey begins while your baby is still snug inside the womb. The antenatal contact is a chance for the health visitor to hear about the mother’s pregnancy, her health and well-being and her family circumstances. It is a chance for the health visitor to get to know how things are going, the mother’s ideas about her baby as well as her thoughts (and her partners if applicable) and plans for becoming a parent(s) and for when the baby arrives. In the early years the health visitor will visit your family when your little one is around 2 weeks old, and again at 6 weeks. We then see families again at around 8 months to 1 year and 2 to 2½ years routinely for development reviews. At any time families are invited to access our drop in clinics or call our team to discuss any questions or needs that your family has. Wherever needed we will work closely with your family to support you on your journey. I suppose I understand why my friend can’t describe my job, because everyone’s experience of their health visitor will differ depending on what they need at the time. Maybe it will help to share with you a case study about 1 family I am working with at the moment....

Case Study

I met Ms Q when she was 28 weeks pregnant for her antenatal appointment. This was Ms Q’s third baby, and when she was expecting her older 2 we were not offering the antenatal contact, so she was a little confused when I turned up to talk about her bouncy bump. However Ms Q soon told me she was really pleased to be offered this contact as she had previously experienced depression and was worried about coping with 3 children. We worked out a plan to work together to build up Ms Q’s skills to identify and manage low mood, meaning that she felt prepared and confident. When the lovely baby arrived I continued to work with the family, and as we all know, before ‘teething problems’ comes sleep deprivation, sometimes feeding difficulties, stubborn wind, explosive nappies, and a whole host of potential challenges. Ms Q is a very busy Mum, and she often called on me to find out when and where she could access the relevant support. One day, however she called with a much more complicated problem. ‘When you have come to see baby we have often spoken about the strain a new baby can put on a relationship. The thing is that me and Mr Q are not good at all’, Ms Q said, ‘well I want to leave him, and he won’t let me. I’m scared for me and the kids. I don’t know what to do, can you help me?’ Yes, I can, and I will. Life with kids is a massive mixture of joy, uncertainty, love, fear and everything else besides. Health visitors work with families to face the things other people don’t always talk about. For most families this will be the horror of not sleeping for weeks and weeks, the worry that little Timmy isn’t yet walking but his sister was at this age, or sorting the myths from the facts – by the way you can never cuddle a baby too much and bottle fed babies do not sleep better! Other families are supported with mental health problems, domestic abuse, drug abuse, homelessness or complex health needs. We do not judge and we do not tell you what you have to do. What we do is work with you to figure out what you think needs to change and support you to find the way to make those changes. By the way, I love cuddling Ms Q’s baby. If you want to contact your health visiting team please do by calling: 0300 1111 022 (option 4) Or visit the website at: www.nhft.nhs.uk/0-19 We are also on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Healthvisitors Confidentiality of service users is maintained in this article.

Childcare

Top Tips for Choosing Childcare:

1. Consider your child’s age and needs. Younger children need closer attention. Some children flourish in small groups, others in larger groups. 2. Consider what hours you need childcare. Some providers offer cover early morning and later in the evening. Some providers are school term time only. 3. Look around the facilities. Are they clean and safe? 4. Ask about the activities the provider offers. Do they offer a range? Will your child be stimulated? 5. Look at the menu available. Will they cater for special requirements? 6. Ask for references and speak to other parents. Consider combining childcare if it would benefit you and/or your child 7. Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your childcare. Some providers have waiting lists. 8. Take your child with you when you look around and watch their reaction. With older children you can usually tell if they’re comfortable somewhere or not. 9. Research all your options well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
