Help build BUGTOPIA ‘THE ZOO’

G

reenTrunks have found premises to build their Bugtopia ‘the zoo’! The site is the former butterfly and aquatic centre at Sykes Lane Rutland Water. The site is large enough to house a variety of species for conservation and education, they are hoping to have on the site: Crocodiles, Monitor Lizards, Iguanas, Chameleons, Monkeys, Parrots, Tortoises, Butterflies, Bugs and much more. As a zoo, they want the best environment possible for these animals by providing a comfortable, safe and inviting home for them to spend their lives in. For this to be possible, they need enough tropical planting to fill 4,275sq ft, because the property has been derelict for 6 years and sadly no previous planting has survived. Greentrunks are therefore after some support and help from their generous customers and local businesses to raise funds to buy the tropical plants and build amazing enclosures for the animals to be housed as naturally as possible. To be a part of this incredible project, Greentrunks have organised stone bricks to be carved with your name on them (by Finnemore stonemasons Ltd, tel: 01572 822645) which will be on permanent display for years to come in the zoo and presented on the opening day event. They are asking for £50 per stone, which will come with a certificate of authenticity and would make a beautiful gift for any animal enthusiast. To find out more or to support this worthy project, visit: www.greentrunks.co.uk.

If You Go Down To The Woods Today... In the Woods with Firetree Photography

E

very year I run private bluebell wood photography sessions. The private woods are just outside Gumley, near Market Harborough. They are cleared every spring of dead wood and brambles so the bluebells can have the freedom to grow. The wood is sheltered from harsh winds and even if it rains the canopy of trees provide great shelter. So what can you expect? What Shall I Wear? The wood is full of natural colours, moss green, and the pastel shades of purple and blue. I advise children and family to dress in similar natural tones to compliment the wood. Above all children should be comfortable with wellington boots or closed toe shoes, and warm! A freezing child is never going to make a good photograph. On The Day Tell the children you are going to meet me for a walk in the woods. Try not to tell them they are going on a photography shoot and they have to ‘smile’. It puts children on the defensive. A trip to find the fairies, or a hunt for the Gruffalo is more appealing.

What does it involve? My photography is natural but that doesn’t mean I only use natural light. I do use reflectors with a gold surface to add warmth and a sunlit feel to the images and sometimes an offcamera flash to add to the natural ambience. I use a very small area of the wood to protect the bluebells and I encourage children to walk along well-walked paths. I encourage children to play for natural images. I also use a range of lenses, my favourite being my 70-200 mm, this creates beautiful soft backgrounds and gives me the ability to focus on children at a distance so they are not overly disturbed by my presence. Final Images As with all my photography I shoot RAW and the images are custom edited to add clarity and colour to the bluebells, soften skin and remove blemishes. Over 50% of any image is background so the photographs always make stunning colourful wall displays. Of course the children look pretty too! To find out more about this years shoot visit:

Trostisar turns an ‘ow’ into a ‘Wow’

A

s a parent, you want your children to have fun. You explore playgrounds, make new friends and discover new things at museums. Everyone is excited and the children are running around so fast that you can’t catch them. You’re all having a lovely time until… someone has a bump or a scrape, there are tears and the whole day is spoiled. Well, not any more. Trostisar’s award-winning products are designed to turn an ‘ow’ into a ‘wow’. Their cuddly plasters are not just a plaster, but a cuddly friend designed especially to help children smile again when they have hurt themselves. They’re so soft and cute that Myspringfieldmummy wrote in her blog “I am in love. I am actually speechless”. For those children who have a bruise or bump, the Bumpsicle will really help. The Bumpsicle is an ice-pack which you place inside a cuddly toy to soothe a bump. When the child feels better, you pop the lid off and eat it like an ice-lolly!

T

he hugely popular Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom theatre production is coming to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April. The Little Kingdom – where everyone is very, very small – is home to Princess Holly and her best friend Ben Elf. Holly is a young fairy princess who is still learning how to do magic properly and sometimes her spells don’t work out quite right. Ben is an Elf. Elves don’t do magic but they are very good at making things. Ben doesn’t have wings like Holly but he flies on the back of Gaston the Ladybird.

In this exciting new musical adventure, Ben and Holly have fun and games helping Gaston clean up his messy cave; they go on a trip to The Big World with tooth-fairy Nanny Plum; and still have time to plan a surprise for King Elf’s birthday party, complete with an unplanned jelly flood. Packed full of games, songs and laughter, this is an enchanting and magical visit to the Little Kingdom, live on stage for the very first time. This beautiful story of elves, princesses and childhood innocence will delight all the family. Featured Class: Infant Aquatics

B

aby and Toddler swimming has become a very popular activity in the UK and research has shown babies who swim are far better developed socially, mentally and physically. Teaching your baby the joys of swimming is a bonding and fun experience for both parent and child. Through gentle encouragement and lots of praise you will soon see your baby’s progress. Swimming from an early age is beneficial to natural development and co-ordination. A good time to start is when baby is between 2 and 6 months old.

What is Infant Aquatics?

Infant Aquatics has been established for nearly 10 years, it offers baby and toddler swimming courses, focusing on the gentle and effective birthlight approach.

What is the aim of the course?

The aim of a course is to teach you new skills including invaluable safety skills. This will develop your child’s confidence and ability as they move towards independent swimming. Classes are always fun and action packed, encouraging a child’s full potential in the water. Courses are progressive and through our unique techniques and holistic focus we will help to develop your babies’ natural ability to swim.

Talk us through a typical lesson

Lessons are interactive with adult and child in the pool together, normally with a maximum of eight in a group. The activities are adapted to suit your baby’s age, experience and development stage. The half hour lessons are playful and stress free, always focusing on baby and encouraging them to progress at their own pace. All activities have a specific teaching aim which we make fun through a series of songs, rhymes and games, appealing to a child’s natural sense of curiosity and play.

What are the benefits?

In the water babies use more muscles and can move freely without restriction. This means they develop more muscle tone and strength which can exercise the joints making them more flexible. It is also reported that babies that swim regularly often have improved appetites and sleeping patterns. Spending quality one to one time with total focus on each other in the pool, having fun and special relaxed time together is extremely beneficial to baby and parent and can help the bonding process. Many of the moves and techniques used promote skin to skin contact, closeness, trust and touch. Social benefits include strong communication, interaction and learning to share and take turns.

What ages are the classes for? 2 months to 5 years old

When and where do you run the classes?

Classes run on most days of the week and we use the following venues: • Balance Health Club, Kettering • Diana’s Health Club, Wellingborough • Rowangate Primary school, Wellingborough • Scott Bader, Wollaston

About the baby swimming courses

Swimming courses need to be pre-booked. The next courses will start after the Easter holidays. They generally run for 12 weeks, in line with the school term. A typical course will cost approx £108.00, (depending on location and duration.) The lesson is for half an hour. Each course is tailored to your baby’s age group ensuring full focus on their development stage.

Experience a Musical World

A

with

Giggles & Wiggles

t a Giggles and Wiggles class you can expect your Baby and toddler to be introduced to a musical world filled with singing, rhyming, imitating sounds, sound identification, instrument exploration and creative movement, your little ones are encouraged to be creative, to initiate their own ideas and to respond in their own special way while care givers nurture with active participation and give them the security they need whilst enjoying purposeful time together. With the daily pressures of life ever encroaching on family time these classes provide a moment in time to stop and enjoy what you and baby or toddler are doing in the here and now. As you play an instrument or sing a round or move like a train you will uncover an engaging musical world that builds on your child’s confidence, self-control and communication skills. Giggles and Wiggles classes help children become better learners through music and movement, as well as taking a holistic approach to their development - and the learning aspect is for parents and caregivers too. It is by experiencing music rather than by performing that young children learn. I invite you to be child like again and to experience music as if it were new to you. It is never too early or too late to come along and experience a class. I have also joined forces with KMPAT Kettering Music and performing arts trust in starting a baby and toddler class on Saturdays at 10am at Latimer Arts College in Barton Seagrave. They provide a very rich program from babies up to late teens where children can learn any instrument in an orchestra or a rock band or folk music and musical theatre; they are superb at what they do. My primary goal is to give you and your baby and child the best positive first class experience and inspire you to a lifelong love of music. So sing a song and dance along! Would your children know how to call 999?

W

hilst browsing online I came across a news clip with a voice recording of a real life 999 call. This was the call of a very brave little lady called Sienna. At just 5 years old she was helping her mummy (Katie) in an emergency. Katie had collapsed in the kitchen and Sienna couldn’t wake her. She tried to phone her Daddy but with no answer she knew she needed to call 999. Because of ongoing health problems, the family had made it very clear what to do in a situation like this, so Sienna followed what she had been taught and called 999. The call is very emotional to listen to, Sienna showed great courage and answered all the questions, and stayed on the line to the emergency services. She even showed concern that she wouldn’t get to school!

‘Adventure in an Ambulance’ is available to buy on Kindle, direct from the Izzy and Ollie website and from lots of online retailers.

When the emergency services arrived they had to force entry as Sienna couldn’t get the door open, but they got in and Katie got the help she desperately needed. Sienna saved her Mummy’s life that day. Since the incident, friends and family have been fundraising to replace her front door and Katie has been overwhelmed by all the help and support: “What my friends have done has blown my mind, the fact anyone would help us is amazing. We are so grateful” says Katie.

I felt very inspired by both these stories and wanted to share them to make others think. Speaking to both Mums in these stories, they want to continue to raise awareness, and if we can all help just one person, then that’s fantastic.

Izzy and Ollie are working on other publications to educate children, with the next one having emphasis on the safety of children wearing their seatbelt and keeping it on. Incidentally, Joanne is looking for help in getting this next book printed, so if anyone can help please get in touch with her through the website. “The latest book is looking fab, very excited. Just need help with printing and hoping for sponsorship. Here’s hoping we can educate a few more children and maybe save a life’” Joanne told me.

Article by Leanne Houghton

Sienna and Katie

This whole story got me thinking...if I was in a similar situation, would either of my 2 children (age 5 and 3) know what to do? I’m afraid the answer would be ‘no’, and I’m sure lots of you would have the same answer. So how can we educate our young children to deal with such adult situations? Upon researching the subject I found some really useful teaching aids through the Red Cross and discovered a fantastic website: www.Izzyandollie.com Izzy and Ollie was created when 2½ year old Isabelle had to call an ambulance for her mummy (Joanne). The incident made Joanne want to educate young children, not just in calling 999 but in various situations and safety issues that a child may find themselves in. Izzy and Ollie have created a book ‘Adventure in an Ambulance’ which is aimed at children to educate them on what to do in an emergency. Firstly your child needs to know what the number 9 looks like, where it is on the phone and how to connect the call. You also need to explain what constitutes a genuine emergency. We don’t want the panic of the morning school run creating an influx of calls!

Joanne, Isabelle and Ollie Win a copy of the book ‘Adventure in an Ambulance’. See page 58 for details.

Pause for Thought..

If

Society

were a I

Parent...

f society were a parent, it wouldn’t be a very good one. It would say ‘you must eat your greens’ then make you take an up-hill bike ride past a million fast food establishments to get to the greengrocer. When you get there, the green grocer has shut down because everyone got too hungry trying to get to him and just had a pizza instead. If society were a parent it would be a mean one. It would tell you that you should exercise an hour a day and sleep for at least 8 but then make you drive for 90 minutes in order to work for 9 hours a day, spend 2 hours cooking and eating and another cleaning and tidying. Once you’d done all that and were ready to get down to the exercise it had requested that you do, society would say ‘whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on. Don’t you have bills to pay? Have you rung your mum recently? When was the last time you read the kids a story? If society were a parent, its advice would be ambiguous. It would tell you to be prudent with your finances and then sit you in front of a screen on which appears, message after message, telling you about all the things that it is VERY important for you to spend your money on. If society were a parent it would be dishonest. It would tell you that you should always practice love and tolerance then present you with a barrage of information about who we should hate and why. If society were a parent, it would be a dismissive one. Our children question us about everything and, as good parents, we welcome those questions because we know they are an important part of children’s development. Children hear what their parents have to say, they decide what they accept and what they want to reject and, in doing

so, they grow into a unique individual. Are we encouraged, as adults, by society, to grow and develop in the same way or is it more important that we conform with the status quo?

Yet despite all of this we allow society to guide our behaviour and we teach our children to allow it to guide theirs? This is where I become confused because the plain truth is that ‘society’ is not an entity. It doesn’t think and reason, nor does it possess intuition. It is simply a sum of all the thinking, reasoning, feeling and intuitive knowing of it’s constituent people. So how can it be that we so often feel so controlled by it? Who is really in charge here? I propose that, just like a child needs conflict with it’s parents in order to grow, so society needs conflict within itself in order to develop. Let me explain by asking you to think about how much you have changed since your children came along. What extra fears and worries now inhabit your outlook on life? How differently do you do things? Maybe you eat a lot more healthily than you used to or engage a lot less, if at all, in habits such as binge drinking and smoking? Maybe you changed your job when your children were born to something you felt would better meet the needs of your increasing family or gave up work altogether. When you really think about it you may feel that you are almost unrecognisable from the person you used to be before you were a parent. Our children change us, often for the better. Once we are thinking on behalf of a little person who holds our heart in their hand whilst they charge off into the fray of life, we see things differently. Your children challenged you and you became better for it. Society is, in part, a representation of the outlooks and opinions of the people who comprise it. Therefore, just as

Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

31

children change the outlook of their own parents, so we, as constituent parts of society, have the power to do the same thing, to and for ourselves. However another main part of modern society is media which, to me, seems to function as society’s brain. It seems to do our thinking for us. It tells us what we should think, what we should eat, how we should act and it limits our expectations of ourselves in many subtle ways. It’s advice, as we have seen above, is dubious to say the least. However whilst media may currently be the brain of society we, as citizens, are it’s heart. In human bodies, large areas of the brain can shut down, disabling the body yet the heart still continues to beat. Yet if the heart shuts down, the brain has only minutes to live. My intention with this article is to illustrate that society can be thought of as a body, be it parent or otherwise, with a perfectly good heart but a malfunctioning brain. As part of the heart of society, you hold the trump card. You can change it just by being the change. When you were born, you were blessed certain innate abilities. You had the ability to communicate when you were in distress, you had the ability to grip onto your mother for dear life, you had the ability to understand that a face was a much more important object, than any other object you were presented with (except maybe a nipple!). You even had the ability to swim. All of these things are survival tools. You were born with all the abilities you needed in order to continue to remain alive. Parenting instincts are

part of this. You were born knowing how best to care for your children. Society, as a non-entity can make no such claim. If anything, socialisation into a ‘modern society’, more often than not, serves to help us to ‘unlearn’ this important knowledge rather than consolidate it as we could be doing. Society may offer us protection and security but it also fosters dependence, indifference to things that really matter and fixation on those things that don’t. If society really were a parent, I reckon we’d all be in care by now…….. So, in raising your children, why not start to rely less on what society says you ‘should’ be doing and much more on your own instincts. It would certainly seem to make sense. Even if your instincts guide you down a path that seems completely at odds with what everyone else is doing, why doubt them? Just as our children question us and rebel against us in order to come to their own understanding of life and become happy, independent human beings so we, as individuals, should challenge the part of ourselves that submits guilelessly to the guidance of ‘society’ and, in doing so, change it for the better for the children.

Meet our Winter

‘Mum in a Million’

I

t was a tough decision again, with several very deserving Mums to pick from for our winter ‘Mum in a Million’ award, but after careful deliberation we selected Theresa from Bozeat - pictured right with her family. We’re delighted to be able to treat Theresa to a Relax & Unwind package, courtesy of Time for Me in Wellingborough. The package consists of a prescription facial, back, neck and scalp massage and a pedicure. Theresa was nominated by her friend Louise. Here’s Theresa’s story (in Louise’s words):

}I

would like to nominate my friend Theresa for this prize. Theresa struggled to have children initially having 6 miscarriages before finally giving birth to her son Lewis. 10 months later she gave birth to her 2nd son Harrison. He was 9 weeks early and spent about 6 weeks on gosset ward in Northampton General Hospital. Since then (March 2011) Theresa has gone on to have 2 daughters too. Despite having 4 children under 5, Theresa is constantly fundraising for Gosset Ward. She has run online auctions, produced charity calendars featuring gosset babies, organised sky dives, and loads of other fundraising events. Theresa has helped raise over £20,000 which has helped buy a much needed travel incubator for the ward. As well as this, every year she organises food for staff and parents on Gosset Ward on Christmas Eve and Christmas stockings for all the babies who have their first christmas on the special care baby unit. She is amazing and an inspiration. I met her when my twins were on Gosset Ward at the same time as Harrison. I couldn’t have survived that time without her. The Gosset staff were amazing looking after all the premature and sick babies and I am very grateful. I always donate when Theresa organises anything to raise funds for the ward, but I honestly don’t know where she finds the time or the energy to do all the fundraising. She is an inspiration and I am sure would benefit greatly from some pamper time.

}

Thank-you to the lovely Time for Me in Wellingborough for supplying the prize, to Louise for nominating Theresa and to Theresa for letting us share her story. Please check out Theresa’s fundraising page on Facebook:

Rejuvenation for the Hair, Scalp and Mind at Queens Hairdressing, Rothwell

hen an e-mail landed in my inbox inviting me to try out the new Hair & Scalp Ritual at Queens Hairdressing in Rothwell, I jumped at the opportunity. Aside from the new treatment sounding fabulous (and just what I needed right now being in the stressful process of moving house), I was keen to visit Queens Hairdressing as I’d heard lots of good things about it and had been meaning to try it for a while. Expectations were high as I set off for my appointment (which also included a cut and finish) and I can honestly say they were exceeded. The salon itself is just gorgeous and an ideal setting to relax and unwind. Based in what looks to be an old barn, the décor, with the decadent floor to ceiling framed mirrors, wooden beams and warm lighting, give an air of luxury making the whole experience feel like an indulgent treat. The staff were all very welcoming and extremely friendly and down to earth. Any embarrassment I might have felt after trying to enter the salon through the wrong door was immediately brushed aside with the warm welcome I received! (Apparently everyone does it – not just me.) My appointment began with a thorough consultation on what I wanted doing, with helpful discussion on what might work and what wouldn’t. My stylist certainly knew her stuff. From there I was taken upstairs to the washbasins for the Hair & Scalp Ritual. The upstairs provides an even more tranquil setting with muted lighting, candles and relaxing background music; much like a beauty salon. One of the best features upstairs though were the chairs up to the basins. More like a reclining leather armchair, it was more comfortable than my sofa at home! These are a new feature apparently only recently installed – well worth the investment. The Hair & Scalp Ritual was amazing. Lasting approximately 35 minutes, it includes a restorative head massage, based on Indian techniques, a gentle exfoliation of the scalp and hot towel to open the cuticle. Designed to release tension and restore balance to the scalp and mind, it was a thoroughly relaxing experience that I would recommend to anyone. My cut and finish followed the Hair & Scalp Ritual and I was delighted with the results. I’m currently trying to grow my hair out from a short style so it was rather a challenge but my stylist was superb – both in the advice she gave and the quality of the cut. Having had a few awful cuts in my time it’s great to find a decent stylist! A great experience all round. It’s a 10 from me Queens Hairdressing. I will definitely be back. Think Yourself

Slimmer

& Feel Slimmer Inside

B

ecoming successfully slim and being able to maintain being the slimmer you is what most of us strive to achieve.

• Give yourself permission to leave food on the plate, stopping just before you are full.

There is so much information about how to lose weight out there, that I often find my weight loss clients are confused about the right thing to do. Supermarket shelves are full of ‘fat free’ and ‘low calorie’ so called ‘diet’ foods. Television adverts are constantly bombarding us with these too, alongside glossy magazines in fact everywhere you look ‘food’ is advertised, whether it’s temptingly indulgent or health conscious, food is everywhere!

• Drink a glass of water about 20 minutes before each meal. Hunger and thirst are similar feelings, so make sure you are fully hydrated before a meal and then you will need less to eat.

Everyone is different and there isn’t just one way to lose weight, but there are some helpful tips that everyone can benefit from doing that can help you become a more mindful eater: • Stop the yo-yo ‘dieting’ patterns and find a healthy eating plan that suits you best and stick to it! Look for long term gain, rather than quick fixes. • Take your time, slow down as you eat and chew each mouthful mindfully. The slower you eat, helps aid digestion and lets you know when you are full sooner. • Only eat when you are hungry and never just for the sake of it. Be conscious of whether you are actually hungry or maybe simply bored or fed up etc. Practice saying NO to emotional eating.

• Invest in a pedometer and get walking more, gradually increase your steps to 10,000 steps a day for supporting weight loss. • Get your head into gear and set small achievable weekly goals. • Most of all “Believe in yourself & know you CAN do it!” Call for a free initial confidential consultation for Hypnotherapy around weight loss, controlling cravings or focusing your mind. hen I started to look for work after being a mum at home for 4 years I got really discouraged. It seemed to me you had to trade in the family to have a career or you had to trade in the career to be with the family and I wanted both, I did not want to get a menial job just to fit around school hours and school holidays. I have developed a substantial full time income working part-time from home around the school gates downsizing through the holidays by partnering with a very special company that cares. Our family run global company has a 2.6 billion turnover and an asset base of 1.5 billion, cash rich and debt free. We are a brand leader in the industry of health and nutrition located in over 150 countries giving access to international trend growing market places. I am already working with the top leaders within the UK. I am now looking for 5 ambitious women who want to develop £29,000 to £45,000 pa income with all the trappings of a large blue chip company: car programme, worldwide travel, pension

Business Mum:

Lisa Wrigley from Partylite Name: Lisa Wrigley Family: I live with my husband and 2 children who are 9 and 11 now. Description of your business:

I am an independent consultant for Partylite, who sell highly refined wax candles and their accessories. We are the only company who doesn’t use animal by-products in the manufacture of the wax. Our candles are vegetarian and vegan friendly.

How long have you been doing this?

I’ve been in Partylite for 14 years this August. I dabbled before I had the kids for about a year but the time wasn’t right so I started back up when my eldest was 3 months old. He used to come to all the coffee mornings with me as we were all mums in the same boat.

Why did you decide to start?

The first time it was my sister’s idea. She said I never went out, as I ran my own hairdressers and beauty salon in Surrey, so we joined Partylite together. I struggled to split myself between the salon and the partylite business though as I didn’t realise then that there was no pressure to do x amount of parties and I could do them as and when I wanted. So I stopped Partylite as I was selling the salon, moving to Northamptonshire, getting married and having a baby all in about the space of 10 months! The second time around I held a party for my Mums and Tots group and my sister was the consultant. All my Mum friends convinced me to start up again as the products were so good. I didn’t take much persuading as I’d taken a job in the NHS when I moved to Northamptonshire and hated it.

When I joined I got a £300 kit that I didn’t have to pay for and I got paid from the very first party, it was like starting up my own business again but without the bank loan, the debts and the overheads. I’m a real people person and I get paid to go and enjoy myself with different people every time I go out, I literally get “paid to party”.

How well does it fit in with family life?

I can pick and choose how far I want to travel which days and or nights I want to go to work and if I can’t do a particular party I get someone in the team to go it helps them to grow their business and we both get paid for that too.

What do you find are the disadvantages?

I get asked what’s the worst part about my job, for me its trying to read the house numbers in the winter. I can’t - its too dark!

What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of working for themselves?

I think you have to find something you enjoy doing and something that suits you and the family with no pressure. I’m lucky I found partylite it gave me the life line I needed to be able to work a job I love, when I wanted to work with no money outlay and lots of rewards both gifts and cash. It’s made life a lot easier and given me the chance to give my family some of lifes luxuries. I would never go back to the 9-5 slog and I can’t see myself doing anything else.

What do you like about it?

I have the flexibility to work when I want, around my husband’s shifts and my 2 children who they said I’d never have! I can give myself a pay rise if I want to and I can have free five star trips abroad with my husband every year - all inclusive, all expenses paid.

Ten Tips For Running A Successful Community Event

M

By Bouncy Wouncy

any people have great ideas for local charities or causes - but only a small few of these actually become wellattended, safely run (profitable) events. We have seen it all, from the over-organised (but under advertised) ones, to well-attended, poorly planned and (to be honest) quite dangerous ones. Over the years I have developed a template to follow, this keeps things consistent and ‘stress free’ for me, but you need to develop your own method. We all want to raise lots of money and awareness for those that really need it, but why does it need to be so difficult? Here are my top ten tips to help you run a truly AMAZING event: 1. Have a great venue It needs to be easily found, well known, and have plenty of car parking. Consider disabled persons and those with push chairs – can they easily access all areas? 2. Draw a site plan Draw this several times over, consider how the stalls will affect each other, for example a penalty shoot out needs clear space around it, not just in front. Run this plan through with the venue and suppliers – are they happy with it? 3. Electricity All the big attractions and services need power, and they need it nearby. Don’t stick the PA system or bouncy castle the other side of the field! 4. Access times Do not allow any vehicles in the area once the event has started. Inform all suppliers in advance when they can set up / down. 5. Risk assessment / safety Simply saying ‘accidents happen’ is not good enough. Get a professional in to assess the event (around £100£200). If it goes wrong – you’re in court. 6. Food and drink Never never never run out of food and drink!! It’s your biggest earner! If you are preparing / serving food, also speak to your local environmental health department. 7. Not just Facebook There is more to advertising than Facebook. Get permission from the council, and get some leaflets out, or send a text to all your friends and family. Or advertise in Time for Tots! 8. Consider neighbours How will the event affect them? Can they help you? Give them a knock a few weeks before for a chat (this might reduce the chance of traffic or noise complaints). 9. Spend money to make money Great events need great attractions. You will never make a lot of money back from a large bouncy castle / inflatable slide or farm yard animal show for example, but you can guarantee high visitor numbers, (who spend money when they are there). Place your attractions strategically to make visitors walk round, keep them at the event as long as possible. 10. Contingency plan What if your main attraction doesn’t show up, or it rains? What if you have a medical emergency or a fight breaks out? Remember you are dealing with the public, and anything can happen – plan plan plan, then plan some more… Don’t ‘wing it’!! We hope you have a fantastic event, and it all goes well. If you would like our assistance please get in touch, we can supply a bouncy castle, with staff, safety barriers and insurance for £25.00 (you even get a share of the event takings).
