Tackle the Wistow Maze this Summer

W

ith England hosting this year’s Rugby World Cup, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze is joining in the fun. Created in the shape of a Rugby Player (scoring a try), the maze has been designed to build on our appetite for major sporting events, and to test visitors’ knowledge on a variety of sports that originated in the UK. Opening this year on Saturday 18th July, the Wistow Maze features over three miles of intricate pathways carved through 8 acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving unrivalled 3D panoramic views. “Three matches are being played in Leicester and we want visitors to join in the excitement and patriotic fervour of this tournament, whilst exercising both mind and body along the way”, says Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. Diana continues “The challenge for visitors is to find 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the 3 miles of pathways. Each quiz board features a different sport along with a multiple choice question, combined with an array of interesting facts and figures on how and when these sports first originated in this country”. Wistow Maze is an excellent family day out. As well as the challenge of this giant maze, visitors can test their skills on a variety of mini mazes and games in the Activity Funyard, which includes a space hopper track, hoopla and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, ensuring there really is something to satisfy all ages. The Wistow Maze attracts over 15,000 visitors each year and is a winner of Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction”. At the end of each season, the maze is harvested for cattle fodder and then redesigned the following Spring using GPS satellite technology. Opens Saturday 18th July to Sunday 6th September (7 days a week), and then weekends only until Sun 20th Sept. 10am – 6pm Free Parking. Admission charges: Child £5.50, Adult £6.50, Family Ticket (2+2) £22.

10 Tips For Running A Successful Community Event

M

By

any people have great ideas for local charities or causes - but only a small few of these actually become wellattended, safely run (profitable) events. We have seen it all, from the over-organised (but under advertised) ones, to well-attended, poorly planned and (to be honest) quite dangerous ones. Over the years I have developed a template to follow, this keeps things consistent and ‘stress free’ for me, but you need to develop your own method. We all want to raise lots of money and awareness for those that really need it, but why does it need to be so difficult? Here are my top ten tips to help you run a truly AMAZING event: 1. Have a great venue It needs to be easily found, well known, and have plenty of car parking. Consider disabled persons and those with push chairs – can they easily access all areas? 2. Draw a site plan Draw this several times over, consider how the stalls will affect each other, for example a penalty shoot out needs clear space around it, not just in front. Run this plan through with the venue and suppliers – are they happy with it? 3. Electricity All the big attractions and services need power, and they need it nearby. Don’t stick the PA system or bouncy castle the other side of the field! 4. Access times Do not allow any vehicles in the area once the event has started. Inform all suppliers in advance when they can set up / down. 5. Risk assessment / safety Simply saying ‘accidents happen’ is not good enough. Get a professional in to assess the event (around £100£200). If it goes wrong – you’re in court. 6. Food and drink Never never never run out of food and drink!! It’s your biggest earner! If you are preparing / serving food, also speak to your local environmental health department. 7. Not just Facebook There is more to advertising than Facebook. Get permission from the council, and get some leaflets out, or send a text to all your friends and family. Or advertise in Time for Tots! 8. Consider neighbours How will the event affect them? Can they help you? Give them a knock a few weeks before for a chat (this might reduce the chance of traffic or noise complaints). 9. Spend money to make money Great events need great attractions. You will never make a lot of money back from a large bouncy castle / inflatable slide or farm yard animal show for example, but you can guarantee high visitor numbers, (who spend money when they are there). Place your attractions strategically to make visitors walk round, keep them at the event as long as possible. 10. Contingency plan What if your main attraction doesn’t show up, or it rains? What if you have a medical emergency or a fight breaks out? Remember you are dealing with the public, and anything can happen – plan plan plan, then plan some more… Don’t ‘wing it’!! We hope you have a fantastic event, and it all goes well. If you would like our assistance please get in touch, we can supply a bouncy castle, with staff, safety barriers and insurance for £25.00 (you even get a share of the event takings).

W

hen your child starts school for the first time it’s a big milestone in both their life and yours and it can mean significant changes in family life, especially if it’s your eldest or youngest child. It can be an anxious time for all concerned so we’ve compiled some tips to help you prepare.

In the preceding weeks

1. Help your child develop the skills they need to be independent e.g. dressing themselves, taking responsibility for their own belongings, taking themselves to the toilet 2. Talk to your child about school so they know what to expect. Tell them what will happen on the first day, include stories from your own school days and read them story books about school. Make sure everything you say is positive. 3. Involve your child in the preparations eg let them choose a pencil case and lunchbox 4. Get your child’s eyes tested. Problems with eyesight can seriously affect a child’s learning and development. Eye tests are free on the NHS for children. 5. Read to and share books with your child. Research shows that children that are read to from an early age generally learn faster and perform better in school. 6. Purchase the school uniform and equipment in plenty of time to avoid a last minute rush and items being out of stock.

7. Label absolutely everything. All clothes (including socks and shoes), bags, coat, lunch box etc. You’ll be surprised how many children have identical items! 8. If your child will have packed lunches, make sure they can undo their lunchbox themselves and get them used to using one. 9. Make the journey to school a few times to judge how long it will take and get your child used to the school run, the buildings and people. 10. Have a few practice runs the week before to get your child used to the time they will have to get up in the morning and go to bed at night. 11. Try and ensure your child knows other children that will be in their class. It will make settling in so much easier. 12. Help your child build their confidence, so they don’t feel afraid to ask for help, but also encourage them to be thoughtful about others and to take turns and share. 13. Make the school aware of any special needs, medical problems, or likes and dislikes your child may have 14. Note down all the school dates on your calendar as soon as you know them 15. It’s perfectly normal for the parents, as well as the child, to feel anxious. If you do, try talking it through with someone. If you have a friend with a child already at school, talk to them. Don’t let your child pick up on any anxieties you have though, as this will only add to their own.

The night before

1. Talk your child through what will happen the next day to help prepare them for the morning. 2. Make sure your child’s uniform is washed, ironed and laid out ready. 3. If they need a packed lunch, make this the night before. 4. Pack their school bag and leave it ready by the door. 5. Try to ensure your child has an early night. They’ve got a big day ahead in the morning!

On the day

1. Make sure you’re all up and about in plenty of time. If you’re rushing to get ready it will make the morning all the more stressful for you and your child. 2. Take a photograph of your child in their school uniform! It’s a milestone in their life and you will all enjoy looking back at the photos in years to come.

3. Try not to cry in front of your child. Seeing you upset will upset them and make them feel more anxious. If you feel the tears welling up pinching yourself is supposed to help! 4. If your child is clingy and won’t leave you, tell them about the dull activities you have planned for the day! 5. Give your child lots of attention when they come home and even plan a treat for them eg a trip to the local park or their favourite tea.

The first few weeks

1. Have patience. Your child’s behaviour may be different as they settle in and adapt. 2. Show a genuine interest in what they’ve done each day and encourage them to talk to you. 3. Allow them time to unwind when they get home and try and spend some quality time with them each day, even if it’s just watching TV. 4. You’ll probably find your child is more tired in the evenings so you may have to bring their bed time forward. It’s recommended reception age children be in bed for 7pm on a school night. 5. Establish a morning routine as soon as possible, it makes for less stressful mornings. 6. Always check their book bags when they get in and read any letters you get from school straight away, adding important dates or things to remember to your diary or calendar. 7. Be careful not to ignore your other children. Make a fuss of them too. They might find it strange that their older sibling isn’t around as much. 8. Try to get to know other Mums, chat to them at the school gates. This will make the whole experience more pleasurable all round! 9. Try to read to your child every night, not just in the first few weeks but the years to come. This will aid your child’s literacy skills no end and give them a higher aptitude for learning.

A BIG thank-you to all the teachers, parents and organisations that have contributed to this article. And good luck to all children starting school this September! To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

Eyecare for Children Children up to the age of 18 and in education are entitled to a free eye exam and free glasses under the NHS.

G

ood vision is critical to a child’s early educational, functional and social development. Parents should be aware that it is essential to address the child’s visual needs as early as possible. The eyes continue to develop during childhood. The majority of children at birth are long sighted which, if within normal limits, will correct itself as the child matures. However if poor vision is not properly corrected early there is a risk of permanently poor vision. One in five school children could have undetected poor sight (RNIB). Recent studies have shown that many pupils are struggling with poor eyesight because eye tests are no longer routinely carried out in schools. Sight problems can wreck academic performance – or even lead to children being wrongly classed as “special educational needs”. Typical warning signs are: Excessive blinking, Squinting, Peering closely at Books and TV, Bumping into objects, Poor performance at school The importance of good eyesight in childhood cannot be overstated. Around 80% of a child’s learning occurs visually, yet many children do not see well enough to reach their full potential. Part of the problem is that children may not recognize they have a visual defect. It’s also easy for parents to think there’s nothing wrong with their child’s eyesight, not realizing that vision can change very quickly as young eyes develop At Stirling Opticians we use special computerised test charts so that we can check the vision of children that can’t read letters yet, and even younger toddlers and babies can have their vision assessed by our opticians using special equipment that measures the way images are being formed in the eye.

Did you Know? • 1 in 8 boys have a colour vision problem, early detection can help them choose a career where this isn’t a problem • Treatment for lazy eye or squint is far more effective if started at the age of 2-3 rather than 8+ • Children can wear contact lenses if the optician feels the child and parents can work together to care for the lenses

Funky Glasses for children Over the last few years, it has become more accepted and even fashionable for kids to wear glasses and this is reflected in the wide range of frame styles that are available. At Stirling Opticians we offer a large choice of free frames including branded ones from the likes of Batman, Superman, Barbie, and also designer brands to keep your young ones looking cool (Bench Kids, Kickers, Guess just to name a few). What sets us apart is our ranges of specialist children’s eyewear, for example Tomato eyewear and Erin’s World frames. Tomato frames are comfortable, colourful, practical frames which have been expertly designed with babies and children in mind. They can be fully adjusted to fit properly to a child’s head and are virtually unbreakable. They also come in a range of cool colours and designs. Erin’s World frames accommodate and fit children and adults with Down syndrome. Unlike other frames, the bridge is adjusted to fit on the unique features of the nose and the arms are modified to keep the glasses from constantly slipping. Erin’s World frames are available in a variety of sizes and styles to fit toddlers through adults.

Contact us on 01536 511605 and speak to our specialist childrens eyewear advisors. ‘Kids in Specs UK’ on Facebook is a great support group for helping parents of kids that have eye conditions or wear glasses.

Clubs & Classes

Featured Class: Mini Dribblers

M

ini Dribblers is a football class for children from 18 months to 5 years old. The classes aims to get young children involved with football in a safe and fun environment.

Talk us through a typical class The children will first of all do a warm up which involves them moving around using all parts of their body - hands, feet, knees, head etc - so they are more at ease with themselves and don’t just use their feet. Then comes the skill part of the session. The children will always have a ball each when doing the skills. This will include dribbling (tiny kicks), heading, throwing and catching and heading to name but a few. Then comes the fun part. All the children take it in turns to score goals. But first they must run/dribble the ball in and out of cones, shoot, score, then do their best goal celebration (it’s the best bit). Then its home time, after they have received their stamp on their hands to show others how well they have done!

How do classes benefit children? Hand/eye coordination and foot/eye coordination are developed through simple drills and games based around football. The confidence levels of the children raise every single week, with this comes the ability to improve their skills to become better players.

When and where do you run classes? Classes are run on Saturdays in 2 locations: • Redwell Leisure Centre in Wellingborough Beginners - 9.30am - 10.15am. Advanced - 10.15am - 11am.

• Northampton at Benham Sports Arena, Moulton Park Beginners - 12pm - 12.45pm. Advanced - 12.45pm - 1.30pm.

How long does each class last? Each class is 45 minutes in duration.

How much does a class cost?

Everybody gets a free trial session to give it a go, then it is £55 for a 10 week booking. We offer discount for siblings.

What ages are the classes for? We run 2 different sessions for different age groups. Beginners class for children from 18 months to 3 years and an Advanced class for children from 3 years to 5 years.

Time for Dad! I

What’s On this Father’s Day - 21st June 2015

f you’re wondering how to spend the day with your Dad or husband/partner then here’s our guide to what’s on where:

Medieval Father’s Day - Fun & Fools

at Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire

It’s time for dads to play the fool this father’s day! Meet side-splitting jesters Baldwin the Fool and Godfrey Pugh who will take you back to a time when comedy was uncomplicated and the comedians were... simple! With juggling, stilt-walking and all round tomfoolery this promises to be a fabulously foolish day out for the whole family – but make sure your daddy dearest is the main attraction and sign him up to take part in the circus school. Historical high jinks have never been so hilarious. 11am to 5pm. Purchase tickets on the door. For more information call 01926 852078 or visit:

www.english-heritage.co.uk Jousting & Medieval Living History Village at Rockingham Castle

The Knights of Nottingham & the Oxford Household make a thrilling return to Rockingham Castle. With baronial banners streaming, the glint of the sun on steel bladed swords and axes, the armoured knights will fight it out on horseback and on foot. The Black Knight has come to do battle and he intends to win at any cost. Out in the arenathere will be displays by armour clad warriors of sword and pike drill, skill-at-arms and combat prior to the jousters taking the field. Audience participation is expected! A fire eating display, jester in the grounds & story telling for children and adults are all set to entertain you. Open 12 noon to 5pm. Family ticket £31.50.

www.rockinghamcastle.com

Big Machines, Steak and Ale

at West Lodge Rural Centre

Take Dad along to West Lodge Rural Centre on the 21st where there’ll be farm machinery on display and steak and real ale will be served in the restaurant. Plus all the usual farm attractions to entertain the children.

Father’s Day Musical Picnic & Wine Tasting

at Canon’s Ashby

Spend a perfect Father’s Day picnicking to the sounds of smooth jazz surrounded by the vibrant beauty of Canons Ashby’s formal gardens. We all love our Dad! Pack him a lovely picnic, then browse around the Wine Fair showcasing wines from independent wine merchants.

Retro Show at Santa Pod

If your Dad is a car fanatic then why not take them along to Santa Pod this Father’s Day. The Retro Show is a classic car and bike show with a difference: Unlike most shows where you park up in a field and sip tea, this is an action-packed day where you can take part in the racing and show & shine whatever type of retro machinery you have. There will be fairground rides for children together with refreshment stalls and evening entertainment. Plenty to see and do!

Pause for Thought..

The Function of W

Tantrums...

e’ve all been there. It’s 8am and all you want is to put clothes on your toddler and get them out of the door so you can get to work. They, of course, have other ideas. That brand new purple t-shirt with the dinosaur is never going to suffice when there is an infinitely more attractive, stained, 2 sizes too small pyjama top with an owl on it that it is vital that they are allowed to wear to go to childcare today. No, they no longer like dinosaurs. No, it doesn’t matter that the other children will laugh. No, the weather or social norm does not have any significant impact on their decision. Why should it? Their decision is arbitrary. It’s only function to defy you. Frustration ensues, you becomes insistent, putting your foot down. A tantrum at this stage is inevitable. Sigh.

Now, if you’re hoping this article is going to give you a sure-fire method to end tantrums so that you can stop being late for work/embarrassed in the supermarket, then you’re going to be disappointed. The only way to end a toddler’s tantrum quickly is to give in and accept that social exclusion and ultimate descent into delinquency will not occur purely because your child chooses to don sleepwear in the park. On the other hand, if a child grows up thinking that he should be able to have his own way on everything then you may well find that the odd preference for sleepwear will mutate into something much more unacceptable. A two year old walking around the supermarket in pyjamas and slippers will likely pull a few wry smiles in your direction. A 15 year old walking around in boxer shorts and a smelly t-shirt, not so much! So at the point when your child drops to the floor, shattering glass with his screams and hurling random dinosaur related items in your direction, try to remember that God has not sent this child just to test you. In actual fact your angry,

frustrated little angel, given the right reaction from you, is about to experience one of the most important lessons he can possibly receive in life. He’s about to learn about the importance of managing his own emotional state.

We all know that adult who walks around assuming absolutely no responsibility for himself at all. He is the person who moans incessantly about how sucky his life is but never makes any effort to make any changes. It’s all someone else’s fault that he’s unhappy. He is the person who becomes more and more isolated and bitter because nobody is prepared to spend any time with someone who sucks the fun out of everything they do, like Eeeyore. He is the person who scowls at you as you catch his eye in the street and throw him a friendly grin. He is a miserable, joyless fountain of negativity and, to make matters worse, he puts so much energy into expecting the worst to happen, that it often does. This is the image you should hold in mind as you watch your tantrum-ing toddler reach a climactic frenzy in front of you. You can just stand back and let it happen, safe in the knowledge that your lack of reaction, will serve to ensure your child never arrives in such a negative future as the one you are currently imagining. It may sound illogical but here is the reason why it will work. Nobody ever fought fire with fire effectively. Adding your own anger to the situation will only fuel the small frying pan fire into a blazing inferno. Reasoning is unlikely to help. When was the last time you responded to reason when you were in such a rage? But one thing is a given. Anger does not feel good. It feels powerful, it feels overwhelming and it can even feel satisfying but, once it’s over, just like a 500g bar of chocolate, you regret it instantly. Your child is no exception to this rule. As a parent you know

Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

41 that, once the screaming and flailing subside, the anger in your child’s face will be replaced with fear, distress and regret. They may even have hurt themselves physically in the process. By not intervening to stop the tantrum from escalating you are telling your child that they have a choice and a right. They have a right to anger but, if they choose to express it aggressively, the end result will be more unpleasant for them than it will be for anyone else. Providing the tantrum doesn’t serve a function of actually getting the child what he originally wanted, he will eventually come to see that putting himself through that is not only futile but deeply unpleasant. As his learning progresses he will even begin to understand how his behaviour has impacted on you but don’t count your chickens before the eggs have hatched!! The more ineffective tantrums he has, the more his hand will be forced to look for ways of handling his frustration in different ways. This is where you pounce with an awesome lesson.

“Your angry, frustrated little angel, given the right reaction from you, is about to experience one of the most important lessons he can possibly receive in life. He’s about to learn the importance of managing his own emotional state”

In the lovely cosy moments that abound with small children; those moments where they’re playing peacefully and you’re having a cup of tea and pondering on how you could never love anything more than you love them, teach them other strategies. Teach them compromise, teach them reason. Use role play with a baby doll to show them that not wearing a pyjama top with an owl on it does not spell the end of the world. But most importantly, teach them to train their attention on recognising what makes them feel good and what makes them feel bad, emotionally. There are some excellent toys and books on the market for teaching children about different emotions and these should be a staple part of your play kit. Given enough patience on your part (because we all expect that toddlers need an abundance of this anyway; it’s more important than food!!), your expressive little person will soon figure out that life is much more pleasant all round when he takes control over his own outlook. This is a gift to your child that will just keep on giving. Maybe, compared to those of us who have the incessantly negative, miserable, joy sapper amongst our circle of companions, rather less of us have access to the person who seems to have an infinite capacity for forgiveness, endless patience and an irrepressibly sunny To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

42 outlook. It’s a sad fact that few of us master the skill about which I have here spoken. If you are one of those many who find emotional self-control difficult, then you may read this article with a degree of horror and wonder how you can possibly hope to control your own responses in the face of such extreme pressures from your toddler. My answer to you would be this. Make his immediate area secure removing anything on which he could seriously harm himself or do harm with and turn your back on the whole thing. If you have to be late for work then you may as well have another cup of tea. The key is to give the negative behaviours as little attention as possible then, once the child has calmed down, shower them with love

and comfort. Be prepared to dump that second cuppa immediately and go and give your little one the hug he needs after having dealt with the frightful force that is himself. There is plenty of literature on this subject at your disposal not to mention the numerous, infamous TV series’..... Returning for a moment to the impact that tantrums can have on your immediate plans and, therefore, levels of frustration there is one other thing worth remembering...... Choose your battles wisely. Tantrums may be functionally necessary for small children but they are no fun for anybody. If you can avoid them then do. Who cares if your toddler leaves the house looking like Noddy? Only you, that’s who. Anyone else will merely have a passing thought before returning to whatever, much more pressing issue, is currently on their mind, if they notice at all!! When you’re dealing with a tantrum out in public and wishing the ground would swallow you up and save the embarrassment of looking like a ‘bad’ parent, remind yourself of this...Those who walk past and tut probably never had this gift given to them as children. They are intolerant, judgemental and either not a parent at all or, if they are, then they certainly aren’t one who carried out their role with the wisdom that you do! At the end of the proverbial day, children are not given to us to be forced to conform. They are given to us so that we may guide them to grow to be as respectful of their own needs as they are of the needs of others. At the end of the actual day, when you are having one of those ‘I love you so much’ moments that tend to abound during the times your child is sleeping, you’ll look back on this morning’s tantrum and realise that, rather than spending your day feeling guilty about how loudly you shouted this morning, you feel proud that you helped your child to learn one of life’s most important lessons. It’s win, win really...well, except for your boss but....hey....he knew you had small children when he employed you, didn’t he?

Business Mum:

Leanne Houghton

From Page Planner Administration Services Name: Leanne Houghton Family: I have 2 children, Jake 6 and Maisy 4. Description of your business:

I am an Admin Assistant to many businesses with varying job roles for each client. I might manage their Facebook/Twitter pages, help them with promotional/marketing ideas, advertising sales, invoicing, sales calls etc. I have some regular clients and I have those that call on me as and when they need help. I actually work for the publication you are reading right now, helping with features, competitions and advertising! I have so far worked in the baby and toddler industry, publishing, natural cosmetics, health & beauty, fitness to name a few.

How long have you been doing this?

I have been doing this for the last 2 and half years and must say I have never looked back!

Why did you decide to start?

It all started by mistake really! I noticed an error on a Facebook page and messaged them to let them know. They then said they needed an assistant and the rest is history! I am so thrilled that first client asked me to be an assistant as that really was the moment my business started. Consequently they recommended me to someone else and it rolled on from there. So thank you! Word of mouth is key in business so make sure you spread the word of any good service you receive as it can help someone more than you know. The actual plunge into self-employment started a little before I launched Page Planner, thanks to a Business Opportunity advert within this very magazine to work for Time for Tots. An amazing opportunity that has opened many doors for me, so thank you Vanessa! (Editor). I started after having my second child, not feeling ready to go back into full-time office based positions. I wanted to be able to do the majority of school runs and attend tots groups and generally have that quality time to be a Mum! Particularly in those early special years before school.

What do you like about it?

I have the flexibility to work within hours that suit me and work around the family. The workload is

very varied and keeps it interesting. I have the benefit of doing work that I enjoy.

How well does it fit in with family life?

It works well. I can attend the school play, sports day, open days, assemblies etc as I have that flexibility that self-employment gives you. I can schedule work in around all those family commitments.

What do you find are the disadvantages?

Being self-employed does have its negatives; you don’t get the employed perks like holiday and sick pay. I also find it hard to switch off so I have to remember to arrange that downtime but also keep self-motivated. It has stayed in my head that ‘You will get out of this as much as you put in’ so that really helps me keep focus.

What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of working for themselves?

Go for it! It’s important to be happy in your work, it’s such a massive part of your life. You need to do what’s right for you and your family. What works for one person is not necessarily right for you, but you will find your own path. There’s no wrong or right way and I’m a great believer in ‘everything happens for a reason’ If you decide to take the plunge, I would advise joining a network group. Being self-employed can be quite isolating and you need like-minded individuals to keep you motivated and offer friendly help and advice. I would like to give a special mention to Clair and Andrea of Aspiring Business Women. They have been a great networking support to me. Any Women in Business should try their Twitter Hour on Mondays 8-9pm #ABWhour and find out more about them.

Samaritans We’re here for you Who are we? What do we do?

S

amaritans offer confidential, emotional support to distressed, depressed, bereaved and suicidal callers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is often easier for a caller to talk to a completely anonymous volunteer and reveal their most personal and distressing thoughts, rather than offload to a family member or friend for fear of worrying or upsetting that person. The Samaritans can be contacted by phone, e-mail, text or in person at our office in Montagu Street, Kettering, where we have a team of around 70 trained listening volunteers who give up their time freely and willingly, day and night, to help those in distress. We are here to listen and support callers but never to give advice. It is by talking through problems and crises that callers at the end of the conversation, which can be very lengthy, can see a possible course of action which is right for them. Follow-up calls can be offered in certain circumstances and arrangements made to ring the caller back to see how they are progressing. If the person is still distressed, another call may be suggested. Samaritans are self-funding and receive no state aid so raising money is ongoing to raise the £20,000 per annum it costs for phone calls, to maintain the premises in Montagu Street and provide a reliable service to callers. We receive 2,000+ calls a month in Kettering and over the Christmas and New Year period took a call every 6 seconds. Our message to all callers is that we do care, are here for you and you are never alone. Whatever you’re going through, the Samaritans go through it with you. You don’t need to be suicidal to contact us. 111 Montagu Street, Kettering, NN16 8XJ Tel: 01536 416999 or 08457-909090 Text: 07725 909090 Email: jo@samaritans.org

Kettering & District Samaritans

W

e are in the process of having a new system installed for connecting callers with Samaritan volunteers. At the moment, there are times when our callers get an engaged tone, even though there are volunteers available in other regions. With CONNECT, there will be more callers getting through to us, rather than hearing the engaged tone, especially during the night when there are fewer volunteers on duty. So once we go live with CONNECT, callers will always get through if there is a volunteer available to speak to them somewhere in the country. It will also help us to gather better data on call patterns, so we can find out when we need more volunteers on duty.

WHATEVER YOU’RE GOING THROUGH, WE’LL GO THROUGH IT WITH YOU

The Underwear Rule

Teach your child the Underwear Rule and help protect them from abuse

The Underwear Rule is a simple way that parents can help keep children safe from abuse - without using scary words or mentioning sex. The NSPCC has developed this simple guide for parents, (and a child-friendly version available online), to help you talk PANTS with your child. PANTS is an easy way for you to explain to your child the key elements of the Underwear Rule:

Privates are private

Be clear with your child that the parts of their body covered by underwear are private. Explain to your child that no one should ask to see or touch their private parts or ask them to look at or touch anyone else’s. Sometimes doctors, nurses or family members might have to. Explain that this is OK, but that those people should always explain why, and ask your child if it’s OK first.

Always remember your body belongs to you

Let your child know their body belongs to them, and no one else. No-one has the right to make them do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. And if anyone tries, tell your child they have the right to say no. Remind your child that they can always talk to you about anything that worries or upsets them.

No means no

Make sure your child understands that they have the right to say “no” to unwanted touch - even to a family member or someone they know or love. This shows that they’re in control of their body and their feelings should be respected. If a child feels confident to say no to their own family, they are more likely to say no to others.

Talk about secrets that upset you

Explain the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ secrets. Phrases like “it’s our little secret” are an abuser’s way of making a child feel worried, or scared to tell someone what is happening to them. Good secrets can be things like surprise parties or presents for other people. Bad secrets make you feel sad, worried or frightened. Your child needs to feel able to speak up about secrets that worry them and confident that saying something won’t get them into trouble. Telling a secret will never hurt or worry anybody in your family or someone you know and love.

Speak up, someone can help

Tell your child that if they ever feel sad, anxious or frightened they should talk to an adult they trust. This doesn’t have to be a family member. It can also be a teacher or a friend’s parent - or even ChildLine Remind them that whatever the problem, it’s not their fault and they will never get into trouble for speaking up.
