Summer 2016 Contents

H

ello and welcome to our summer issue. I hope by the time you’re reading this the heatwave has arrived and we can all enjoy everything summer has to offer with our families. With pre-schools out and most clubs and classes closed for the summer it can seem a daunting prospect entertaining young children in the weeks ahead, but there is plenty going on and so many wonderful venues to take children to in our area that you needn’t be short of ways to occupy the family. Our extended Summer Activities & Events Guide, starting on page 8, should provide you with plenty of ideas. In our childcare section this issue we’ve included some tips and advice on choosing the right childcare for your child. Another daunting prospect for some, but one we hope to make easier with these tips and advice. Rachel Bridgeford from Soul Attention Life Services has written another super article for us entitled “The Parent: a Teacher of Being and not of Doing”. We always enjoy Rachel’s articles but think this is a particularly good one so recommend a read on page 28. Before I sign off I’d just like to wish all the fathers out there a very Happy Father’s Day on the 19th June. Enjoy the summer! Until the autumn....

Learning in the Outdoors

A New Nursery with a Different Approach

D

affodils Outdoor Nursery is due to open in September, providing care for children age 2 to 5 years. Based in Arthingworth and surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, we offer an exciting and unique opportunity for children to experience freedom to learn in the outdoors. We promote the long established philosophies of the Scandinavian Forest Kindergartens. Children explore, learn and develop in the outdoors - whatever the weather! Our outdoor approach allows children to learn to manage their own risks and challenges, supported by professional early years practitioners. (We have a higher staff to child ratio than the legal guidelines, and our nursery is run by highly qualified, experienced staff). Research shows, that time spent outdoors has a positive effect on children’s health. As parents ourselves we support this, and aim to spend at least 80% of our day in the outdoor environment when possible. We also have an amazing indoor space for cosy winter story times or yummy tea times around a table. Days will be filled with activities and play that is led by the children’s interests and innate curiosity. Activities will include: woodwork, risky play, messy play, forest school sessions, art with nature, creative modelling, sand/water play, mud kitchen cooking, den building, dancing, climbing, singing, yoga...and much more! Daffodils is committed to promoting a ‘have a go’ attitude and encouraging the children to be resourceful, inventive and creative. We understand how well children respond to being trusted with responsibility, thus boosting their self confidence and self esteem. Leading this adventure are Amy Claypole and Olivia Langham. Amy has many years experience working with under 5s. She is a qualified teacher and holds Early Years Professional Status. Amy’s passion for outdoor learning began when she set up a successful outdoor playgroup in rural Devon. Olivia is a level 3 qualified nursery nurse, she brings bags of fun and creativity to her role, so much so she was given the role of lead art and crafts coordinator when she spent a summer working with Camp America. “Creativity is in every child” says Olivia ”we just encourage and nurture what is already there”. Together, they intend to create a nurturing, exciting and holistic approach to child care and education. Their nursery will be unique to this area, providing the best care, the best environment and the best experiences. See Daffodils’ advert on page 33 and join them on one of their open days where you can meet the team, ask your questions, experience their ethos and join in with some activities to gain a sense of what they have to offer your child. Open days are on Saturday 6th August and Wednesday 24th August, 10am-3pm both days.

Summer Holiday Actvities Tackle the wistow maze

T

o mark the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of the ‘Big Friendly Giant’. “Roald Dahl had such an impact on children’s imagination with his extraordinary stories and characters, so to celebrate we are highlighting both his work and that of other famous children’s authors” explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. The maze features 3 miles of intricate pathways carved through 8 acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving fabulous panoramic views. The challenge is to find 12 quiz boards hidden in the giant maze. Each quiz board has a multiple choice question on a classic children’s book, which will help to unravel the answer to the quiz trail, whilst also providing interesting facts about the authors and their stories. It includes an Activity Funyard with mini mazes and games for all ages, including hoopla, a space hopper track and football shooting game. Opposite is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, making it a great family day out. The Wistow Maze is a winner of Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction” and attracts over 16,000 visitors each year. Opens: Sat 16th July to Sun 4th Sept (daily), then weekends only until Sun 18th Sept. 10am – 6pm Free Parking. Admission charges: Child £5.50 Adult £6.50 Family Ticket (2+2) £22

Choosing School Shoes by Funky Lil Feet

T

ime for Tots along with Funky Lil Feet Specialist Children’s Shoe Shop in Thrapston have put together a little guide to help you with choosing the correct First pair of school shoes for your little one starting school this September. It can be a daunting time ensuring you have everything that is required for their First Day. At Funky Lil Feet we understand how important it is to have correctly fitted shoes that are comfortable and durable for being in them all day, everyday! When it comes to Children’s feet, no two feet are the same. There is no such thing as an “average” foot which is why every child should be individually fitted with shoes. Young children have soft cartilage until their bones have hardened (this can take up to 18 years) so they must never be put in shoes which are badly fitted as the foot can become misshapen for years to come. When choosing your child’s school shoe look for soft and supple leather uppers, that should avoid rubbing. Choose a good quality, dyed through leather with breathable linings to allow perspiration to escape. Velcro fastenings are also best for young children to allow independence when getting changed after PE! The toe box of the shoe should be wide enough to accommodate the shape of the unique foot and be fitted with room for growth. For boys (and some girls!) you may wish to consider shoes that have toe protection along the front of the leather to help guard against the worst of the scuffing! At Funky Lil Feet we can help you make sure that your child gets off to the best start. All our fitters are fully qualified and most of us are Mothers too so we know how important that first day at school is. We stock the full range of start rite school shoes which have been specifically designed in whole and half sizes and up to five width fittings to ensure we get the best fit. Why Take Your Baby Swimming?

T

eaching your baby the joys of swimming is a bonding and fun experience for both parent and child. Through gentle encouragement and lots of praise you will soon see your baby’s progress. Swimming from an early age is beneficial to natural development and co ordination. A good time to start is when baby is between 3 and 6 months old. In a weightless environment babies can move more freely without restriction. This means they develop more muscle tone and strength and can exercise joints making them more flexible. It is also reported that babies that swim regularly often have improved appetites and sleeping patterns. Spending quality one to one time with total focus on each other in the pool, having fun and relaxing time together is extremely beneficial to baby and adult. Social benefits include strong communication, interaction and learning to share and take turns. Natural Instincts – Babies are born with natural swimming reflexes such as the ‘gag reflex’, which allows them to hold their breath under water and the ‘amphibian’ reflex which enables the whole body to move through the water. By using different techniques and moves swimming can stimulate their natural reflexes into voluntary actions as they develop. The first visit to a pool should be as relaxed as possible, letting your little one get used to the different sounds, smells and sights in this new environment. A good way to introduce your baby to the swimming pool and really maximise

the benefits is to join a swimming course or programme, there you will have the opportunity to meet other parents and to learn specialised skills specifically for your baby’s development stage. Parents do not need to be strong swimmers and some parents attend as they do not want their own fear of water to be passes onto their children. A good lesson structure should include many different activities with fun action songs, learning how to hold and move baby on their front and back, learning safety and wall skills and developing submersion techniques and breath control. All activities should be adapted to suit your baby’s age, experience and developmental stage. Lessons should be conducted in a playful, stress free environment allowing baby to progress at their own pace. Water safety is paramount and considered to be an essential life skill, unfortunately drowning is still a large cause of infant fatality in the UK, however it is believed that if children are familiar with the aquatic environment from an early age they will remain relaxed and have a better chance of survival if they were ever to be in a potentially dangerous situation in water. editorial by Infant aquatics who run specialised baby and toddler swimming courses. Pause for Thought..

I

s your child flying the nest for school in September? Are you having visions of them, on their first day, neatly dressed in shiny new shoes, hair in neat pigtails or freshly cut, ready to launch themselves upon the world of academia? How do you feel about that? Parents from all walks of life will have a different answer to this depending on how the infant years have presented themselves. Some will jump for joy and reach for the job papers and yet others might grab their partners, head for the bedroom and jump for joy later. Regardless of what this milestone means to you, one thing is for sure; your child’s development is now going to be enormously impacted by an equally enormous range of different people and situations. This is going to mean that your child may change in ways you could never have anticipated. Whilst this may sound anxiety provoking to some, it is in fact, an especially beautiful phase of parenthood in it’s own ways. You might be leaving behind the days of gummy smiles and infinite numbers of ‘oh how cute!’ moments but what you are entering into is every bit as gratifying. In a school age child, what you get is a growing number, steadily increasing in frequency, of glimpses into who your child is growing up to be. Don’t believe that you can’t impact upon this development

The Parent: A

every bit as much as you did while your baby was home with you. A parent has a clear responsibility when it comes to a school age child. School will introduce the child to a wide range of topics and subjects, encouraging independent, creative and enquiring thought and the skills necessary for survival in a modern world of work but parents bear the brunt of the other half of what it takes to grow into a well rounded person. You are, always have been and always will be, the main teacher for your child’s spiritual needs. Whether your family holds religious beliefs or not, every parent has an idea of the kind of person they want their child to grow up to be. This forms the basis of your ‘home curriculum’. A child cannot succeed in education without this core set of skills and knowing about who they are. With so much emphasis on academic skills and the testing of these to verify a school’s efficacy, little room is left for teachers to deal with those children who need a bit of extra social support. Indeed, the very nature of this task requires teaching on a one to one level which, clearly is next to impossible in a class of 30+ children. This is the main role that the parent plays in the upbringing of their school age child and it is incredibly important because what school is, in essence, is a child’s first experience of belonging to society at large.

29

A teacher of being and not of doing

Your home curriculum should include the following. What is right and what is wrong and how do we make those decisions? How does our behaviour towards others make us feel about ourselves and how does it affect others? What does our attitude to learning say about our intentions for ourselves? What does that say about how well we treat ourselves? How do we understand the behaviour of others so that we can understand that behaviour always has it’s source inside of it’s executor, not in any third party. We do not have any control over how others behave, only over how we behave. How should we treat people who are in a less fortunate position than us? These are just a handful of the questions that a parent of school age children should be concerned with. In light of the recent, increased media focus on the problem bullying in schools, these are maybe the most important elements of learning that your children can receive. A happy person, is one who holds, not a degree or a job worth many thousands of pounds a year, but the ability to create happiness in the lives of others. Ask yourself how this may be done by your child, with their particular set of skills and abilities? You may be proud as punch when your child comes home with a gold star for excellent writing or 10/10 on their spelling test but, it can be guaranteed

that if a report comes home from school that your child has gone out of their way to help a friend or showed exceptionally good manners to their teachers, you will almost burst with satisfaction. This is a point that is definitely worth bearing in mind because, in all the societal clamour about making sure our children are academically achieving and ‘keeping up’ with their school mates, it is easy to forget that knowing facts is not what makes us human. Knowing how to feel feelings and react to them with the best possible intentions is what makes us human. Without that, we would just be wage slaves, entirely cut off from each other in every possible way. So, when you dress your child up on their first day of school and gaze longingly into their little eager face, wondering where the innocent little baby that you held in your arms went, make a decision. Decide that, no matter what your child’s academic ability, it is of secondary importance to their understanding of how to be happy and how to create happiness in the lives of others. Then, apply what your heart tells you and just sit back and watch your little angels thrive.

Childcare

Choosing Childcare W

hether you’re returning to work or your child has just reached the age when they would benefit from a few hours a week in a childcare setting, choosing your childcare can be a big decision, especially when it’s for your first child and the whole process is new to you. There are all sorts of factors you need to consider, one of the first ones being, what type of childcare to choose. In this first part of our ‘Choosing Childcare’ series we look at the different types of childcare and the advantages of each:

Childcare options day nursery A Day Nursery is a childcare setting that looks after children between the ages of 0 and 5 years (though this can vary from nursery to nursery) and is usually open 5 days a week, all year round, between the hours of 8am and 6pm (some may open longer hours). You can book full or half day sessions to suit your needs. Day nurseries are usually purpose-built, or specially adapted buildings, specifically for the purpose of caring for children. Some are part of a chain, and have a manager in charge, others are independent and run by the owner. Some require your child to wear a uniform whereas others children can wear their own clothes.

The cost of a day nursery can vary widely but generally day nurseries are in the mid-range price wise - more expensive than a pre-school or childminder, cheaper than a nanny. Advantages of a day nursery: • Open all year round which is handy for parents who work • Your childcare provision is not affected by a carer being off ill or on holiday • Many will take children from birth up to going to school • Excellent facilities being purpose-built, or specially adapted for the purpose, and being used solely for childcare • Plenty of other children there for your child to socialise with • A wide variety of organised activities provided, often including crafts, singing, dancing, music and even languages in some places! • Meals and snacks usually all provided • They are inspected by Ofsted so must adhere to certain standards • There are plenty to choose from in the area so you can pick one that is right for you and your child

Pre-school/Playgroup Playgroups and Pre-schools are for children aged between 2 and 5 years. They are usually run in a local community centre or village hall and operate within school hours, in school term time. Sessions are available on a half day basis, though some may provide the option for your child to stay for their lunch (which they take themselves in a lunch box) on certain days. Advantages of a playgroup/pre-school: • Generally a more affordable option than day nurseries as sessions are shorter and they’re not open all year round • The cost may be entirely covered by the government funding for 3 and 4 year olds (depending on how many sessions you book)

Childcare so it needn’t cost you a penny! • A good option for parents who only want term-time childcare (maybe because they have older siblings off on school holidays anyway) • Your childcare provision is not affected by a carer being off ill or on holiday • Plenty of other children there for your child to socialise with • A wide variety of organised activities provided, including: crafts, messy play, singing, music, storytime etc • Inspected by Ofsted so must adhere to certain standards • Plenty to choose from in the area so you can find one that’s right for your family.

Childminder Childminders work from their own home looking after children there. They must be registered with Ofsted (if they are paid for looking after children for more than 2 hours a day), have completed an introductory childcare course and hold a current paediatric first aid certificate. Whilst a childminder can potentially look after a child of any age, registered childminders are allowed to look after up to 6 children under the age of 8 at any one time (including their own), but no more than 3 under the age of 5 usually. As childminders are self-employed they set their own working hours and rates so these vary from one to another. Advantages of a childminder: • Generally more flexible than a nursery or playgroup so more able to provide tailored care for the hours you need • Many will take children from birth and may even continue looking after your child once they are in school, both in holidays and before and after school • May take your child out and about to various classes and activities - even ones you started with your child that they then continue • More consistent care as your child is looked after by the same person every day • Inspected by Ofsted so must adhere to certain standards

Nanny

(Information provided by Ami at Sweetheart Nannies) A nanny is a qualified and/or experienced childcarer employed to look after your children in your

35

own home. A qualified nanny is trained to provide care and educational development for children from birth upwards. They can live in or live out, permanent or temporary and can have sole charge of the children or shared care with either/ both parents, grandparents or sometimes a job share with another nanny. As a nanny we would expect to undertake duties on a day to day basis to assist you within your home. This can include: organising activities/ outings, nursery duties, preparing & cooking meals, tidying bedrooms, changing beds or washing clothes for the children. A nanny is not responsible for general household tasks unless this has been included within their contract and has been agreed beforehand. The advantages of having a nanny would be: • Your child/ren are being looked after in their own home • No early dropping off or late pick ups at nursery/ childminders • Nannies will work even when your child is sick, has a virus, vomiting, chickenpox etc. Nannies are generally more flexible with hours than a childcare setting • Most nannies will work around your work schedule: early starts, late finishes, & evening babysitting. • If your nanny is Ofsted registered & your employer offers them, you will also be able to claim childcare vouchers to help meet the expense of having a nanny. • If you have more than one child a nanny can be a more affordable option as a nanny will be paid per hour, not per child. When employing a nanny it is important to understand the payroll system and added costs behind employing somebody. Very few nannies will be able to work as a self employed nanny as the family usually require the nanny to be contracted to set hours, earn a regular wage, be told how to do the job and told where to carry out the job. Salaries can vary depending on whether the nanny is live in or out, amount of experience/ qualifications and/or Ofsted registered, but the average nanny will look to earn between £9-12 per hour gross (before tax). Finding a nanny to suit your needs can be tricky - A nanny agency can be the safest option as they will have checked the nannies & met with them before sending them to meet the family for interview, usually incurring a finders fee once

Childcare

you are happy to employ the nanny they have found. There are also childcare websites where you can search for a suitable candidate which is usually free or you can advertise for a small monthly fee.

Things to consider when selecting the type of childcare:

Family Member If you are fortunate enough to have a grandparent, or other family member, who is willing to look after your children, this provides yet another option for childcare. How useful this option is depends of course on how congenial that family member is! Using a family member can often be useful in conjunction with other childcare eg pre-school in the morning, Grandma in the afternoon. Advantages of using a family member: • Your child knows their carer well and is comfortable with them • You know your child is being cared for by someone you trust who loves your child and will pay them close attention • A more flexible solution with hours/days more likely to suit you. • The most affordable option!

1.

What age is your child?

2.

What are their current needs?

3.

What are their likes and dislikes? Does he/ she like mixing with other children or prefer smaller groups?

4.

What hours do you need childcare? Will you need it early in the morning or late at night?

5.

Do you need cover all year round or just term time?

6.

Do you have more than 1 child who requires childcare?

7.

Are you able to take and collect your child from the setting?

8.

Is your child at the age when he/she needs close attention?

9.

Would you like them to mix with other children?

10. How much can you afford to pay? 11. Is your place of work in a childcare voucher scheme? In which case you want a provider that takes vouchers. To find out more about childcare vouchers visit: www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/ childcare-vouchers 12. Do you want a provider that provides free childcare for 3 and 4 year olds? If so do you want the government funding to entirely cover the cost of the childcare or are you prepared to add to the funding? Visit: www.gov.uk/ help-with-childcare-costs/free-childcareand-education-for-2-to-4-year-olds for more information on the government funding scheme. 13. Check out the childcare in your area. It could be some providers you were considering aren’t available which can affect your decision. 14. Remember you can always use a combination or providers eg childminder in the morning and a nursery in the afternoon. 15. Trust your instincts. When it comes to a child’s needs, most parents instinctively know what’s best for their child.

name: Claire Lee Family: 3 children, aged 6, 9 and 11 Description of your business: We run arts and crafts sessions for children aged 0 to 11 years. how long have you been in business? Since January 2016 what did you do before? I worked as a Customer Relations Executive for a travel company. why did you decide to start? I love doing all sorts of arts & crafts and so do my children. After searching google for suitable names I stumbled across The Creation Station franchise and took it from there. what do you like about it? I get to play and make thing all day long, what is there not to love! how well does it fit in with family life? Very well, especially as my children are at school and predominately I work during school term times.

what do you find are the drawbacks? Venue hire is my biggest expense and if I could find a venue for sole purpose only that would really help. what advice would you give to other mums thinking of working for themselves? Be prepared for a lot of hard work and dedication. I under estimated how much of my time would be taken up with emails & enquiries, fortunately, these can wait until the evening. I would like to nominate my mum, Sue, for your ‘mum in a million’ competition. She takes time out of her retirement three days a week to look after our very active preschooler son. He’s a very lively lad, a real handful, but my mum takes on the challenge every week and often more than the three days that I have to work. Despite having two false hips, she regularly takes him swimming, to the park and on walks with the dog. She makes everyday special and exciting for him. She’s also going to take care of him while we move house which is likely to be super stressful. Knowing that he will be in the safe company of my mum while we move takes away a lot of the potential stress. She definitely deserves a treat.
