Summer 2018 Contents

A

warm, sunny welcome to the Summer issue. With any luck the beautiful weather we’ve had in May will continue throughout the summer so we can enjoy the many events and activities that are planned. This issue has to be the fullest events calendar we’ve ever had! We have had to devote 13 pages to the calendar to fit everything in. There really is so much to do with little ones this summer. We welcome the Nene Wetlands Nature Reserve (part of the Wildlife Trust) to the magazine for the first time. They run sessions specifically for under 5s in term time and have a weekly programme of activities for children of all ages this summer holiday. Wicksteed Park have also introduced sessions just for preschoolers. It’s all in the events calendar so be sure to take a look on pages 10 to 24. On pages 38 to 39 we’ve got another superb article from a local Health Visitor, this time about your child’s development in those early years and how you can help. We’ve also got an article from Daisy First Aid on tips to keep your little ones safe this summer - see page 33. We’ve updated the Weekly Activities Timetable, starting on page 47, as best we can but we do rely on organisers letting us know when details change so it’s always advisable to check with a group that the details are correct before turning up - especially in the summer when many groups stop for the school summer holidays. A very happy Fathers Day to all Dads on the 17th June. Until the autumn.....

40 Things to do in Northamptonshire... ...before your child starts school Following on from our “10 things to do in Spring” that we brought you last issue, this issue we bring you...

10 things to do in

1 2

Go on a picnic

3

Hunt for Creepy Crawlies

4

On a sunny day pack up your favourite snacks and drinks and head off to a park. Don’t forget to take a picnic blanket and wipes. The Country Parks have lots of beautiful picnic areas or you could just visit your local play park. Why not take a ball and other games to play with after the picnic.

Enjoy a full day of play getting wet and grubby at Stanwick Lakes! Pack a towel, wipes and change of clothes and head off to Stanwick Lakes on a hot day for a full day’s play on their extensive playground. With sand pits and water features to play in, as well as climbing frames, tunnels and slides there’s hours of fun to be had with your child. We recommend going in school term time as it can get very busy in school holidays.

The Nene Wetlands Nature Reserve have just launched their Explorer Backpacks which can be hired from their visitor centre. Each backpack contains everything that you need to explore that nature reserve, including: bug pots, binoculars and ID charts. Ideal for budding young naturalists. (And with the visitor centre located at Rushden Lakes you can combine your visit with some shopping too!)

Ride the Wicksteed Park Express

For many children this is often their first ride on a train! The Wicksteed Park railway track runs around the lower section of the park taking in the beautiful countryside and lake. There are many other rides for toddlers to enjoy at the park too including the carousel, roundabout, mini jets and clown coaster.

9

5

Go camping for a night

6 7

Build a den in the woods

8

Build a sandcastle

9

No childhood is complete without at least 1 camping trip. And better to go when your children are young when they’re almost certainly going to love it! (Less so when they’re teenagers). You don’t have to travel far as there are many camp-sites on our doorstep where you can always pop home if you’ve forgotten something or if the weather takes a turn for the worst. Wicksteed Park is a great first camping trip. Borrow a tent and equipment from a friend if you don’t have the items you need.

Many of the country parks, such as Brixworth and Irchester, have den building areas in their woods. This is a great activity to enjoy with your child who will then love playing in the den afterwards while you relax!

Go on a family cycle ride

Pitsford Reservoir, Fineshade Woods and Stanwick Lakes are 3 great locations to enjoy a family cycle ride - all relatively flat and safe away from traffic. Bicycles are available to hire at all locations (from Brixworth Country Park in the case of Pitsford Reservoir) and your tot can ride in a child seat on your bike, in a trailer or on a tag-along bike if they can’t ride their own bike yet.

We live a long way from the beach here in Northamptonshire but there are sand pits about for your little ones to have a play in and build sandcastles. Wicksteed Park, Stanwick Lakes and Barnwell and Sywell Country Parks to name a few places. Kettering and Wellingborough town centre often have sand pits in situ in the summer holidays too.

Play in the splash park at Wellingborough’s Embankment On a hot day pack your child’s bathing suit and towel and head to the splash park at Wellingborough’s Embankment. With a water play area, picnic tables, a shelter and regular food and ice cream vans it has everything you need for a fun-filled day in the sun - and it’s completely free! There is also free car parking, toilets and baby changing facilities. Unfortunately it is not open midweek in school term time, only weekends and school holidays, so you will have to share with older children too.

10

Attend the Fairies and Elves weekend at West Lodge Farm

Every young child enjoys dressing up and visits to the farm so combine the two and attend the Fairies and Elves Weekend at West Lodge Farm! This year on the 23rd & 24th June. Summer Safety Tips The weather is finally getting warmer! This is something that most of us have been looking forward to after a long winter. Unfortunately though summer is also a time when children can be at risk from accidents or illness. Many accidents are avoidable and the best thing is to try to anticipate and prevent them if possible. This isn’t always easy, as children are unpredictable and parents are often taken by surprise by their child’s next stage of development, so I have a few tips below:

1. Check the UVA star rating on your child’s suncream Parents select factor 50 suncream and understandably assume this is sufficient protection. The factor indicates the level of protection against UVB rays, which are the main cause of sunburn, but UVA rays are also damaging. The level of UVA protection is indicated by a star rating (often displayed on the back of the bottle, with 5* indicating the best UVA protection level). Some well known brands may be factor 50 but only have a UVA protection rating of 3* which is lower than recommended, and therefore children may still be at risk of skin damage. Many supermarket branded factor 50 creams have a full UVA protection rating of 5* for a fraction of the cost so it’s worth shopping around.

2. Make sure you recognise the symptoms of heat exhaustion Heat exhaustion is the body’s reaction to loss of water and salts due to excessive sweating. It tends to affect children in the afternoon when they have been running around all day in the warm weather. The body temperature rises above 38 degrees and if it is not treated quickly can lead to heatstroke. They may look pale and sweaty, have a loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps. They may say they feel cold but will be hot to touch. Obviously its best to prevent heat exhaustion by avoiding the midday sun, wearing a sun hat, seeking shade and drinking plenty of fluid, but if you think a child is suffering with heat exhaustion: • Move them to a cool area out of the sun and give them water to drink. • Remove excess clothing and lay them down. • Oral rehydration solutions or isotonic drinks can be given as they also replace body salts (but always read the label and gain parental consent). If your child won’t drink fluid then ice lollies and jelly can be good options for

33

By Daisy First Aid

helping to rehydrate them. If your child has suffered any of these symptoms, always obtain medical advice, even if they seem to have recovered.

3. Think about garden safety Suspected poisoning is one of the most common reasons for a young child to be taken to A&E. Check up on the plants in your garden! Especially if you have an adventurous baby who likes to put anything and everything in their mouth! Many common plants can be harmful, such as rhubarb leaves, lily of the valley, foxgloves, holly and ivy berries and even daffodil bulbs. Babies can drown in 5cm of water! Most babies and small children who drown, drown at home in the bath or in the garden. Always supervise play in the paddling pool and empty it after use. If you have a pond, consider fencing it off or turning it into a sandpit. Try to avoid head injuries or bumps and breaks by keeping to a rule of just one child on the Trampoline at any time and ensure safety netting is in place.

4. Think about window safety Fit safety locks to windows, or catches to prevent them opening too wide and take care not to place furniture in front of windows so that children don’t have anything to climb on. Children can be escape artists and at this time of year windows are often left open. Many young toddlers can open windows and squeeze through small gaps.

Tips for Choosing your Child’s School Shoes

L

ittle one starting school this year? Read on as Funky Lil Feet Children’s Shoe Shop in Thrapston have put together a little guide to help you with choosing the correct first pair of school shoes. It can be a daunting time ensuring you have everything that is required for their First Day. At Funky Lil Feet we understand how important it is to have correctly fitted shoes that are comfortable and durable for being in them all day, everyday! When it comes to Children’s feet, no two feet are the same. There is no such thing as an “average” foot which is why every child should be individually fitted with shoes. Young children have soft cartilage until their bones have hardened (this can take up to 18 years) so they must never be put in shoes which are badly fitted as the foot can become misshapen for years to come. When choosing your child’s school shoe: • Look for soft and supple leather uppers that should avoid rubbing. • Choose a good quality, dyed through leather with breathable linings to allow perspiration to escape.

• Velcro fastenings are also best for young children to allow independence when getting changed after PE • The toe box of the shoe should be wide enough to accommodate the shape of the unique foot and be fitted with room for growth. • For Boys (and some girls!) you may wish to consider shoes that have toe protection along the front of the leather to help guard against the worst of the scuffing At Funky Lil Feet we can help you make sure that your child gets off to the best start. All our fitters are fully qualified and most of us are mothers so we know how important that first day at school is. We stock the full range of start rite school shoes (as well as Geox, Petasil, Beberlis, Vans & Camper) which have been specifically designed in whole and half sizes and up to five width fittings to ensure we get the best fit. There is also free on-road parking right outside and we are situated just 1 minute off the A14 (Jnc13). We look forward to meeting you and don’t forget to enter our competition when you visit to win free fitted shoes for a year! (see advert)

Your Developing Child

Y

by Joanne Fletcher, 0-19 Clinical Team Lead

our baby’s brain is amazing - from conception you and your family can help it grow. ‘Normal Development’ is a term used to describe a broad spectrum of learned skills that an individual child acquires over their childhood and are unique to each child. The Northamptonshire 0-19 team use the concept of building blocks called Five to Thrive that your child needs to develop. Five to Thrive focuses on the 5 key elements that are essential for your child to reach their full potential to develop and achieve well and to be happy and healthy. In the first years of life your baby’s brain will develop more than at any other time in their life. Today we will consider those vital 5 elements for this brain growth, and what you can do to encourage this. The five building blocks for your child’s emotional, social and mental wellbeing are:

Talk Within the first 6 weeks of life babies respond to their main carers voices – in fact hearing is almost fully developed at birth and hearing your voice is one way that your baby recognises you. Soon baby will begin to watch your face with wonder as you speak, and the brain connections form helping baby to recognise patterns for language development and socialising. Your baby will copy your sounds, and as you listen and respond he will understand that he has a voice too. Baby’s brains work a little slower than adults so you might notice a pause before your baby reacts to your voice. Hold your baby’s gaze to let them know you are listening. It’s not silly to make baby noises the way your baby talks to you (mama, ga, ga) you are having a conversation with your child. Helping him express their feelings as he begins to develop language will

help your child to continue to voice these as they get older, therefore helping them to manage their emotional health.

What can you do?

• Copy your baby’s sounds and add on new ones (mama, ga ga) continue as their language grows so ‘bus’ becomes ‘blue bus’, ‘cat’ becomes ‘nice cat’. • Sing together – singing is a happy feeling that encourages your child to join in. • Read together – reading to your baby from birth is a great way to hold their attention to language. • It’s good to talk! Talk about everything you are seeing and doing ‘did you see that dog?’, count the steps, comment on the feeling and colours of the washing as you peg it out on the line! • Keep your ‘warning voice’ for when you are warning your child about something risky.

Play ‘Play with me Mummy’...ah if I had a penny for every time I hear this in one day alone I’d retire! The translation of course is a bit more complex, and if we could replace our baby’s coos, cries and jabbers with words they might say ‘I need you to show me the world, what is interesting, what can I learn, what can I do? I love toys and books, I love wooden spoons and kitchen pots! I love activities you show me, because you are the very best toy of all!’ Everyday moments are magical to the developing brain that can feed their learning when you join them in a challenge or game. Babies mimic their parents or carers facial expressions, this learning will build connections in the brain that link the facial expression with feelings. We learn to smile usually around 6 weeks of age because the adults smile so much, that we feel happy especially when the adults get so excited when we smile back! Happiness floods the brain providing the right ingredients for growth. Similarly playing singing or counting games helps the brain connections to make sense of the world and to have fun. Later your child will begin to play with other children and alone. The practice they have had playing with you in the early years has

Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

39 prepared them to plan and execute the play and to build their social skills.

What can you do? • Join in with your child’s chosen game. When you join your baby in rolling the ball, or your toddler in finding the blue cars you are saying to them that they have had a good idea, and that their choices are important. • Play outside. Outside games give the chance to explore all the exciting nature as well as develop vision as your child looks across long distances. • Get down. Playing on the floor with your child gives you the chance to make eye contact and communicate. You can see the world from your child’s perspective and this can make for quite creative play! • Role play. Encouraging your child to use their creative mind is fun and great for development. Pretend to be the animals on the farm, or have a pretend train ride?

Relax A major goal for many parents is to feel relaxed. This is because when you relax your heartbeat slows, your blood pressure drops, and your muscles unwind. Your child will mimic your emotional feelings so when you relax together chemicals flood their brain and help it to grow.

What can you do?

• Wind down from exciting play sessions with a few moments of calm. • Help your child relax in a calm environment with soft lighting, warmth and calming sounds. • When your baby is stressed sing or hum to them. This can focus your mind from negative thoughts and soothe baby. • Rhythmic rocking, ssh-ing and reducing the lights and sounds can help an over tired or stressed child to relax. • Try to limit your child’s exposure to screens. TVs and mobile devices are very stimulating to their young minds and can be stressful. • Take time out to meet your own needs for relaxation. A mindfulness session will help restore your ability to contain your child and help him to relax.

Cuddles Touch is a powerful sense, it helps people to feel close and your child’s body will work in tune with yours. Your child will feel safe and secure when you cuddle them, and the physical benefits of a slowing heart rate helps strengthen the connections in their brain as they learns to control their own bodies.

What can you do?

• Cuddle your baby as much as you like. You cannot spoil a baby with love. Instead you are giving them the responsive care that they need to best develop their brains and become resilient little people. • When your baby is calm putting them down to enjoy some quiet time is the beginning of their learning to be independent. • Using varied types of touch (stroking, massage, round and round the garden) are all great for your baby’s brain.

Respond However your child is communicating with you (jabbering, gazing, pointing, speaking or crying) remember this is how they let you know they need you. No one else can meet their needs like you and responding to them makes your child feel secure and loved. Consistently responding in the same way teaches your child what to expect from you and the wider world in time. Noticing your baby’s cues that they are tired (eye rubbing, gazing) or hungry (shaking their head or smacking their lips) and respond you are telling them that you understand and they won’t feel stressed. Your baby will copy your expressions as the communication continues between you and this builds connections in their brain to understand and manage their feelings.

What can you do?

• Copy your baby’s facial expressions and see how they react. • When your baby is trying to see something help them to reach the object or shift their position. • Recognise that crying might not mean your baby is upset, they are communicating with you. • As children get older help them to figure puzzles for themselves while still responding (recognise your child wants to put their shoes on so place them in front of their feet).

Benefits of Pilates What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on using both the mind and body to achieve optimum performance. The deep stabilizing muscles of the body are conditioned and strengthened using sequences of movements that use gravity, body weight and specially designed equipment as forms of resistance. The connection between the mind and body is crucial to Pilates. Pilates trains the mind to maintain a constant level of awareness of the way the body moves. The benefits of Pilates go far beyond simple core strength and flexibility. In addition to the aesthetic benefits, regularly practicing this total-body workout can ease back pain, improve bone density and boost heart rate.

The main benefits can Pilates provide: 1. Core stability & postural alignment: Poor posture accounts for a variety of aches and pains. Pilates teaches you to consciously maintain optimum anatomical alignment in all positions and during movement. By coordinating the body as a whole, you will feel stronger reducing the chances of injury caused by overuse of one area. Activating your deep core muscles will help you realign your posture. 2. Muscle Tone and strength: Pilates is a fantastic way to sculpt your muscles. Other than increased muscle tone, Pilates will strengthen your body, preparing it for the more dynamic calorie burning workouts. You can use it as part of your training routine but it isn’t a cardiovascular workout and will not exercise your heart and lungs. 3. Stress Reduction: Pilates trains you to stay focused on your movements giving you a little headspace from all the distractions of life. It teaches you to breathe properly which is another recognized stress reduction technique. 4. Injury Rehabilitation: Pilates has gained public recognition as a method of rebuilding strength and function following injuries. One great benefit of Pilates is that it is low impact and that makes it ideal as a form of physical therapy. Pilates classes in Corby has been functioning for a year now. As an experienced Pilates instructor I run classes in various parts of Corby. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to like my Facebook page and message me for further details.
