The
Big Toddle
Friday 27th June 2014
What is the Big Toddle? The Big Toddle is a short sponsored walk for children under the age of 5 and their families to raise money for Barnardo’s vital work with the UK’s most vulnerable children. It has been going for 18 years now and is the UK’s biggest charity event for under 5s with Big Toddles taking place all over the country. Time for Tots organised a Big Toddle in 2010 which proved a huge success! Nearly £2000 was raised and a fun day out was had by all!
When & where is the Time for Tots Big Toddle? Our Big Toddle will take place at Wicksteed Park in Kettering on Friday 27th June 2014. The event is on from 10am to 2pm although the Toddle itself should only take 20-30 minutes and will commence at approximately 11am after a fun warm-up with Music Makers and special guests, Wicky Bear and Peppa Pig! Every child taking part will receive a certificate, sticker and medal on crossing the finish line, and those raising £10 or more will also be treated to a FREE ride on the Wicksteed Park Express! Refreshments will be provided after the toddle when families can then relax on the lawn and enjoy the games and entertainment - including face painting, bouncy castle and Jelly Tots Entertainment. The whole event will be about having fun with family and friends, old and new, whilst raising money to help less fortunate children. It promises to be a really fun day out so please sign up to join us and raise as much as you can! Wicksteed Park have agreed to waive the parking fee for all those taking part so the day needn’t cost you a thing to take part (other than the sponsorship money of course!)
What happens to the money raised?
At least 75% of the sponsorship money raised will be sent straight to Barnardo’s who use the vital funds raised by all Big Toddle events to support their early years work up and down the UK. To find out more about Barnardo’s visit: www.barnardos.org.uk.
The remaining 25% will go to local charity “Alfe’s Cause” - please see below for information about this charity.
Prizes to be won!
The biggest fundraiser on the day will win a gorgeous, personalised, wooden toy box, handmade and donated by the wonderful “Pete’s Personalised Toy Boxes” in Wellingborough! (See www.facebook.com/pages/Petes-Personalised-Toy-Boxes) Up to 20 runners-up will each receive a copy of the super children’s book “The Silly Solar System”, written and kindly donated by Kevin Price. (Available to buy on Amazon.co.uk) So how do I sign up? To register for our Big Toddle simply go to our website, www.timefortots.co.uk, and complete the on-line form. We will then e-mail a Big Toddle Pack to you with more details about the event including a sponsorship form to start raising money.
Alfe’s Cause Alfe’s Cause was set up to support Northamptonshire families whose children have a long term illness, particularly but not exclusively all forms of cancer, by arranging and funding monthly activity meetings. The charity was started after Alfe, now aged 10, went into remission from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and wanted to help other children going through a similar situation to his own experience. One of the charity aims is to provide all schools, GP surgeries, libraries and children’s centres within the county information cards designed by Be Child Cancer Aware stating the main signs and symptoms of childhood cancer. This information was something that wasn’t available when the trustee’s own children were diagnosed and by working in partnership with Be Child Cancer Aware, Alfe’s Cause aims to empower people with the knowledge. Children have already managed to get an early diagnosis within the UK because their parents referred to the cards. Please see page 44 for a copy of this card or to request a card or find out more about Alfe’s Cause contact Karen at: alfescause@hotmail.co.uk or visit: www.alfescause.blogspot.com.

Wistow Maze Needs you..
T
21st & 22nd June
his year to mark the centenary of the First World War, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of a Field Cannon, as a timely reminder of the 16 million people across the globe that lost their lives in this war. Opening this year on Saturday 19th July, the Wistow Maze features over 3 miles of pathways carved through 8 acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving unrivalled 3D panoramic views. “In the words made famous by Lord Kitchener, WE NEED YOU to come to Wistow Maze and enter the challenge of finding 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the paths of the giant maze” says Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze. “Each quiz board has a multiple choice question on the First World War which will help to unravel the answer to the quiz trail, whilst providing interesting facts and figures about this world-changing conflict.” An excellent family day out, visitors can not only pit their wits against the maze but can also take part in a variety of mini mazes, games and table top activities in the Activity Funyard, which includes a space hopper track, hoopla and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, ensuring there really is something to satisfy all ages. A Summer of Fun at Thurleigh Farm Centre
C
hallenged with keeping the kids amused over the summer holidays yet not ending up broke? Then the team at Thurleigh Farm Centre should be well placed to help. Over the summer holiday period Thurleigh Farm Centre will be running its usual timetable of scheduled activities such as the Fire Engine, Ponies, Tractor Trailer rides, mini quads, bungee trampolines and animal feeding sessions not to mention the regular six bed trampoline set, archery, indoor/outdoor play and bunny cuddling. There will also be lots of adventures up in the Wacky Woods with interactive story-telling. Previous tales have included “The Gruffalo”, “The Three Little Pigs” and “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”. Back too, due to popular demand, is Chris Welbourn from “Chris’s Animal Encounters” who will conduct hands-on sessions with his exotic critters and pygmy hedgehogs every Thursday commencing July 24th. Finally mindful that more and more families are staying at home over the holidays, the farm have introduced a different themed activity for each of the six week period so that even those who are familiar with the farm can be further distracted by pirate mania, dinosaurs & fossils, or Super Heroes – plenty of paint and art based adventures for all to enjoy. Day visitors are welcome but did you know that a 3 month membership of £68 (1 adult & 2 children) gives you 12 weeks of unlimited fun enabling you to visit as many times as you like. For further information call 01234 771597 or visit: www.thurleighfarmcentre.co.uk. Or stay in touch on Facebook or via Twitter.

Afternoon Tea Anyone? A Grandmother’s review of
Farndon Fields
W
e were driving back from Leicester, with my daughter Leanne and two grandchildren Jake and Maisy, when Leanne asked if I would like to visit Farndon Fields Farm Shop on the way home. I had never been before and the children both shouted from the back “ please lets go Grandy” so I said yes. The grandchildren were excited because they had heard there were some chickens and goats and they adore animals. It had been a busy day and by the time we arrived we were all feeling hungry so we headed for the café first to have a drink and something to eat. It was very busy and most of the tables were taken but we were shown to a table in the window that was vacant. On passing all the other tables my eyes were drawn to the cake stands overflowing with mouth watering treats, which everyone was tucking into with glee. We were handed a menu and both Leanne and I were immediately drawn to a picture of the aforementioned cake stands, which neither of us could resist! The inclusive price of £15.50 for two, included freshly made sandwiches, salad, crisps, a choice of various home made cakes, scones with fresh cream and strawberries and a large pot of tea (we both managed three cups each). It was excellent value. The children were well catered for and enjoyed freshly made sandwiches, tucking into strawberries from the cake stand afterwards. There is plenty of choice of drinks for the children. Highchairs are supplied for the younger ones and the standard of cleanliness is excellent. After finishing this scrumptious tea we ventured outside and looked at the excellent range of garden plants and accessories. Jake
wanted to buy a plant for his daddy and there was a good selection for him to choose from starting at just £1.99. We then had a walk around the farm shop, which is overflowing with local home-grown produce. I am certainly coming back to stock up my freezer! There is an excellent gift section as well which we enjoyed a browse in. We ended the visit by taking the children to see the chickens and goats which they loved. Farndon Fields is easy to find and has excellent car parking. The whole experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all - young and old! Featured Class: Kiddie Coaching
What is ‘Kiddie Coaching’?
Kiddie Coaching is a play programme for 2½ to 6 year olds which introduces key rugby related skills.
What is the aim of the classes?
We aim to teach children the basics of rugby, key social and interaction skills and allow them to build confidence and self-esteem.
Talk us through a typical class...
Kiddie Rugby always begins with parent interaction and fun before the session starts. The formal session starts with a warm up followed by structured and fun games and activities based on teaching children the core skills of rugby, such as try scoring, passing, kicking, catching, footwork and team work. We finish off with key team games and fun end-ofsession games. Sessions are altered to ensure all aspects are both ability, need and age appropriate.
How do the classes benefit children?
Our classes increase a child’s level of physical activity, therefore improving their chances of sustaining increased physical activity as they grow up and maintaining a healthy life style. Children learn key rugby related skills including the ethos of rugby: to be respectful, persevere and work as a team. Classes also help children to build key social, interaction, listening, sharing and turn taking skills, as well as building their confidence, self–esteem and
motivation. There is also a basic element of numeracy and literacy skill to the classes which benefits preschool age children in particular.
What ages are the classes for?
For boys and girls from age 2 to 6 years old.
When and where do you run classes? Sundays at Kettering RFC, Waverly Road, Kettering 10am - ages 2 to 3 years, 10.45am - ages 3 to 5 years 11.45am - ages 2 to 3 years Saturdays at BBOB RFC, St Andrew’s Road, Northampton 9am - ages 2 to 3½ years, 10am - ages 3½ to 4½ years 11am - ages 4½ to 6 years

How much does a class cost?
£5 a session paid on a termly basis following the school terms. All new kiddies are offered a free trial session and we do offer a sibling discount.

So, what’s Andy Nickerson Photography all about then?
EXCLUSIVE “TIME FOR TOTS” PRIZE DRAW
I’m a specialist children’s and family portrait photographer working from my relaxed boutique style studio in rural Brixworth, just a few miles north of Northampton.
What’s different about your studio to all the others out there? Unlike many portrait photographers, I’m only interested in capturing your children’s real characters and expressions not creating posed or heavily styled photography. I also offer all my clients unrivalled level of customer service with an experience that is both relaxing and enjoyable.
How do you achieve this? Time, patience and rapport. I allow bags of time for my sittings so my clients never feel rushed or processed, resulting in happy and relaxed children and therefore much more organic captures. I believe in letting children behave like children and not forcing them to pose or getting them to perform. I never ask them to smile, in fact I never really ask them to do anything structured, instead preferring to study them carefully whilst chatting and observing them interact with their family members. I believe that this patience leads to a rapport and trust between the child and myself, this is the key to unlocking their real character. I’m also a seasoned Dad of two young children myself and so understand what makes them tick. On a technical note, my work strips away all the usual distractions often associated with contemporary portrait photography, like novelty props and themed backdrops, and really focuses on the child. I also prefer to work in monochrome, believing that over saturated colour only serves to get in the way of great portraiture, it distracts the eye away from what really matters, your child!
How long have you been doing this? I’ve been a professional photographer ever since I qualified in 1996, so way too long. I shot commercial/advertising work down in London for the first 12 or so years of my career, which is where I really learnt my craft and developed my signature style. I’ve been taking on private commissions from local families for just over 2 years now and have to say it’s the best thing I ever done, I love it!
What does it cost? A Family or Child Portrait Experience costs £50, which includes up to 2 hours of relaxed studio time, a cinematic viewing and ordering session, plus
Visit: www.andynickerson.com/t4t to be in with a chance of winning a Family Portrait Experience & a gorgeous 16” box framed portrait, worth £255. Deadline: 30/06/14
Fine Art Children’s Portraits
www.andynickerson.com £50 credit towards your own bespoke artwork. Typical artwork investments range from £140 upwards depending on what the client chooses. I’ve also just started working in association with Emma’s Diary and so will soon be offering FREE Baby Portrait Experiences for new Mum’s with access special discounted packages. Please visit my website for more details. There are of course cheaper studios out there, as with everything in life, you get what you pay for and my clients enjoy the difference in quality and value the level of service I offer them. Children aren’t children forever and as a result, my clients appreciate that bespoke portrait photography is well worth investing in.

Meet our Spring ‘Mum in a Million’...
A
big thank-you to everyone that wrote in to nominate a local mother they know for our ‘Mum in a Million’ competition in our Spring issue. We received so many lovely stories and it really was a tough decision picking a winner. In the end though the judges agreed unanimously that Wendy Barton, nominated by her friend Jolene, should win. Here’s her story (in the words of Jolene):
}W
future medical treatments and equipment Logan will need. Ironically Wendy will probably choose not to take some time out for herself to be pampered (but hopefully she will!) as it would mean being apart from Logan but she definitely is a worthy winner of at least the recognition for being a mum in a million and I’m sure her lovely sons would agree!
}
endy and her family have been on an incredibly difficult journey over the past 8 months and if anyone deserves to be pampered, it is Wendy! Wendy is married to Darren and they have two lovely boys, Toby who is 3 in June and Logan who recently turned 1. Wendy’s youngest son Logan has an incredibly rare chromosome deletion and also has severe and uncontrolled epilepsy, hypotonia and faltering growth. Over the past 8 months Logan has had numerous admissions and stays in hospital, he spent both his 1st Christmas and his 1st Birthday in hospital. Logan has extensive care needs and requires monitoring 24 hours a day. Even when at home there is rarely a day that doesn’t involve numerous medical appointments. During this difficult time Wendy has never been apart from Logan. She has spent every day and night that he has been in hospital by his side and continues to provide the majority of Logan’s care needs even whilst in hospital. When not in hospital Wendy is often juggling the needs of both her boys alone during the day, as Wendy’s husband Darren works incredibly hard and often long hours. Wendy works amazingly hard, with very little sleep, to keep on top of all the demands placed on her time and still manages to be super organised! Wendy provides a happy, stimulating, loving home for both her boys despite the very difficult situation that she and her family are faced with. This shows in her happy, content, loved and amazing boys that are an absolute credit to her (and Darren). Wendy is a loving, selfless, dedicated mum who loves her boys and would do anything for them. Wendy takes the time to update a Facebook page dedicated to keeping family and friends updated on Logan (Love for Logan - Team Logan) and is dedicated to raising money for her precious boy, to go towards making his life as happy, stimulating and as comfortable as possible and to cover any
A very worthy winner we’re sure you’ll agree! We’re delighted to be able to treat Wendy to a pamper package at sanctuary of Beauty in Desborough and even more delighted that she has agreed to take a little time out to be treated! Thank-you Sanctuary of Beauty for supplying the prize, thank-you Jolene for nominating Wendy and thank-you Wendy for letting us share your story. What a gorgeous little boy you have!

Top Beauty Tips for Busy Mums!
By Samantha from Sanctuary of Beauty
W
e spend most of our time running around after our families, which is all part of being a Mum, but can sometimes forget about ourselves! I’m here to make sure you look after you. The tips and advice I will share are quick and easy so you can fit them into your daily routine. Being a Mum myself I know how little time we all have, and the best set plans are soon changed! As Mothers our hands are always in water, washing them constantly after changing a nappy or preparing a snack, which means they get dry very quickly. Make sure you have your hand cream by your sink and massage it into your hands after washing every time. Also leave your hand cream on your bedside table and massage it in before bed. If you only do it once a day that’s a start and your hands will feel and look a lot heathier in no time.

If you get some “spare time” whilst your little ones are resting, pop on some bright nail polish to cheer you up. Make sure you use a quick drying top coat to guarantee that quick drying time!
Those early starts and interrupted nights play havoc our eyes which can often feel heavy. Run the cold tap and get 20 cotton pads 10 for each eye, soak them in the cold water and squeeze the water out. Put these straight on your eyes with pressure. Your eyes will feel fresh and the puffiness will be reduced! Before you make it outside a few layers of mascara will soon give your eyes that awake look! Don’t forget to pick up your next issue for Time for Tots, where I will be giving you more top tips for Mums on the move. Take care, Samantha

Awareness of Stress Factor on Wellbeing
S
tress is a huge issue in today’s high pressure society. Most of us find ourselves stressed at one time or another - maybe because of worries at work, difficulties in home life, work overload, financial pressures.....all these things can lead to stress in our lives. Prolonged stress can lead to depletion of our body resources affecting our health and wellbeing. Harshani-Lori CurbishleyBrown from Mind & Body Wellbeing explains why and what we can do to combat stress... There are 3 Stages of Stress: Alarm, Resistance and Exhaustion The alarm stage is triggered when faced with a stressor - something the brain recognises as either frightening or puts us under pressure. At that stage the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal glands are activated, resulting in the production of cortisol, noradrenaline and adrenaline. If a stressor continues to be present and our personal stress reaction continues, we enter into a degree of resistance stage. The hypothalamus in the brain, produces endorphins allowing us to maintain a state of ‘alert’ around the stressors and gradual depletion starts to set in. If the stressor is still present, gradual depletion continues and the body is unable to maintain it’s normal functioning - the third stage of exhaustion comes into play. Extended or prolonged exhaustion stage can affect us mentally, physically and emotionally. We might experience anxiety, low mood, confusion, insomnia, addiction, nerviness, nausea, bloating, ulcers, skin conditions, diarrhoea, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, colds, infections, headaches etc. In stressful situations the production of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol leads to an increase in heartbeat; increase in breathing rate; sugar in the form of glucose is released from the liver to give us increased energy for action; sweat is produced to cool the skin down whilst our muscles work; our senses become more alert; our pupils dilate; the immune system works hard to help the body fight any anticipated infections or wounds; and the muscles tense for action. It’s principal is to get oxygen, blood and energy to our lungs and muscles so we can have the extra resources we need to either tackle or run from the situation. But alongside that, our digestion shuts down to prevent us from needing to eat or process
food because it needs us to take immediate action around the situation.
What is an antidote to Stress? By learning how to relax deeply, fully and completely on a regular basis the natural calming influence of our nervous system can have a healing effect on stress symptoms. This phase of rest and repair is necessary to maintain healthy balance in the body, to: • Restore energy, to grow • Body tissues repair and grow • Heart action slows down to a healthy rate • Breathing slows becoming deeper and calmer • Digestive system activates to absorb nutrients • Nervous system finds rest and recuperation • Muscles relax • Excessive mental activity slows down • Positive emotional states arise • Sleep improves Learning self-hypnosis, practising mindfulness, Yoga or Tai Chi, practising meditation and deep relaxation, are all positive things that we can all learn to do and introduce into our daily lives to help us help ourselves along the way. These all support the parasympathetic nervous system and bring about it’s calming, healing response to us physically, mentally and emotionally. If you have been suffering from stress for a prolonged time, then Hypnotherapy and other talking therapies can help you reduce the impact of any mental or emotional stress factors, enabling you to be able to reach deeper states of relaxation. Learning to relax is a practise, which takes patience, practise and time to accept and allow the body/ mind that quiet time of doing nothing in a physical sense - but so much in a healing context! Contact me today if you would like to know more about relaxation, meditation, or to be taught SelfHypnosis and put stress into your past, with better coping strategies into your present day and future life ahead of you now. T
he decision most mothers face as they approach the end of their maternity leave can be a tough one... do they stay at home with their baby or do they go back to work? Some mothers don’t have the choice and some have already made their minds up before the baby was even born, but for many mothers it’s an agonising decision which leaves them feeling torn. We’ve talked to 6 local Mums who all made different decisions. We share their stories with you here and how it’s working for them...
THe FuLL-TIMe-eMPLoyMeNT MuM Anna, Mum to Lexi
work in marketing for Cambridge Weight Plan where I’ve worked for 7 years. I always knew that when we had a baby I would go back to work full time. The reasons for this were financial but also because I love my job! When Lexi was born I loved being at home with her and going back straight into full time employment was very difficult, however we are now in a good situation. I’m fortunate because my husband’s job (in IT) means he works unusual hours and can be at home a lot to handle much of the childcare. We also have an amazing child minder who Lexi loves which makes things easier. Being with Ellen (the childminder) gives Lexi the chance to mix with other children, which is great because she is an only child and, at the moment, we have no plans to have any more. Lexi also spends a lot of time with her Daddy, which makes her so close to him - much more than most dads are. I am able to get Lexi up every morning, I come home at lunch and am home every evening to spend some time with her and put her to bed. Weekends are family time and we always try to do fun things and go places
and buy things that, without my full time job, we wouldn’t be able to afford. I certainly don’t think that Lexi has any problems with me working full time. We’re very close, and she is such an amazing little girl. It is hard at times leaving her, especially if I have to work away overnight, but I know it’s the right thing for our family. We all work as a family unit - whether that be Lexi and Simon, Lexi and me or the three of us. I don’t think any of us miss out on anything - neither me or Si have missed any milestones. I saw her first steps, I heard her first words, I get to enjoy everything about being a mummy but I also have my own independence and my own income and I have actually progressed in my job since returning to work.

THe voLuNTeeR MuM Zoe, Mum to 4 children
have 4 children and my husband works full time as a lift engineer, with awkward hours, so I’m very busy looking after my family. About a year ago though I decided to start volunteer work and now work as a volunteer at Rothwell Children’s Centre. I work 5 hours a week, when my daughter goes into nursery, mainly raising money for the centre but also running my own parent forum. I chose to be a volunteer to better my job prospects when I do go back to work full time. Being a volunteer works really well around my life style and I would definitely recommend it to get you back in the flow of working life, but without the commitment of being regular as we
all know our children can be unpredictable with illnesses. It feels great being a proper human again for part of the week, being called Zoe and not Mum! Once you become a mum I feel you lose who you are to some degree. Volunteering has given me back a little independence as well as a sense of belonging and achievement. It also looks good on my CV and has boosted my confidence for taking the plunge back into paid employment, which I intend to do at some point in the near future.

THe STAy-AT-HoMe MuM Davina, Mum to violet, 6, and Sophia, 2½ hen I became pregnant with my first daughter I worked as a full time Client Services Executive, a busy job with a good side order of stress. I couldn’t wait to go on maternity leave and put my feet up (and believe me I did!) then once Violet was born I kept both our schedules busy with visits to friends, mixing with other babies and just enjoying quality one on one time. I returned to work full time when Violet was 11 months old and juggled childcare between both sets of grandparents and 2 days at a nursery. At this point I felt I was ready to leave her and as I was only paying for 2 days nursery fees it still made working beneficial to our family, plus Violet got to spend quality time with her grandparents and benefitted from the stimulation of the nursery activities. This arrangement continued for 3 years until I fell pregnant with my second daughter. During the early stages of pregnancy I found the work/home balance overwhelming, exhausting and increasingly stressful so took maternity leave at my earliest opportunity. Timing wise Sophia’s
birth couldn’t have been better as Violet was just starting pre-school 5 afternoons a week so I got quality bonding time with Sophia, and Violet got that break from her squawking little sister. The decision to go back to work was taken out of my hands as during maternity leave I was made redundant from my job. The decision to not seek further full time employment was based on a few factors. My parents, were in their 70s and it was no longer viable to rely on them. This would have meant full time nursery fees for Sophia and a childminder for Violet each morning and after pre-school each day. Even with a full time wage these costs would have eaten it up and then factoring in school holidays and days when the children were sick and I could not be at work (I did not receive sick pay) it just didn’t make financial sense. Sophia is now 2½ and I adore the time we spend together. It’s been such a different experience compared to when Violet was little as aside from the weekend I barely saw her for more than a couple of hours a day and that time was always busy and rushed. In some aspects it’s almost like starting from scratch. Potty training, for example, as this was done by the grandparents and nursery with Violet! It makes me sad in some ways to think I missed out on all these little things with Violet but I’m very lucky and blessed to have the time now to make up for that and I intend to make the most of every minute!

have 2 children and currently work part-time for a University as a Trainer whilst also setting up my own business which I hope to move into once both children are at school. Life now is very different from life before children. I used to work for a Business Consultancy commuting to London in one of those jobs where you ‘sell your soul’ and you’re there all hours as the work dictates in quite a fast-paced environment. I was made redundant from there at 7 months pregnant and although at the time it was awful and stressful, actually it was probably the best thing that could have happened as it would not have been family-friendly at all. I started a new job when Charlie was 8 months old, just 2 days a week at the time then moved up to 3 days. I’ve always found it a good balance, time to be ‘me’ and put some smart clothes on (and make up, and brush my hair!) and use my brain for part of the week while spending time with the kids for the rest of it. It’s not always easy as people still expect you to be available throughout the working week, having to decline meetings or events as it’s ‘not one of my working days’ didn’t always go down well. Trying to keep a foot in both camps is also a juggling act and I completely appreciate people who go for full-time work or full-time Mum – there’s pros and cons to both of them! However the ‘family friendly’ environment can also have its downsides (with stability comes slow pace and lack of spark) and I’m now starting to put the wheels in motion to set up on my own business. I’m passionate about helping people and making a difference (I’m also co-founder of a community group, Brighter Beginnings, which helps local families). I’m so aware of the difficulties mums have when going back to work, and when in work – financially, emotionally, logistically – and so I want to focus on offering support to help ease that. I recently trained as a
And soon to be business owner with some great advice! coach and in my training I had some coaching which really helped me address some of my own issues, ultimately down to lack of my own identity past being a ‘mum’ (part-time work can sometimes feel driven by having a family, and part-time opportunities are limited) and the guilt many of us feel of breaking yourself in so many pieces you never give full attention to any part. So my new business, Soar Development, will offer coaching and training for mums and women in business. At the moment I’m trying to set up ‘development evenings’ with a speaker and some time to talk about goals (mums so rarely focus on themselves and what they want!), training days and 1-2-1 coaching. It’s early days but I’m hoping that when the kids are both at school and no childcare costs it will free me a bit so I can make a go of it – get back to doing something that inspires me and (hopefully) still gives a good worklife balance. Watch this space! My tips would be do what you need to do at this stage in yours and your kids’ lives – nothing needs to be forever. I’ve worked for a family-friendly place as it fit around the kids being young but now can move into what I want to do a bit more If childcare doesn’t make it feasible to go back to work, put it on hold for now, keep your skills up in other ways (the female Vice Chancellor at my previous job, equivalent of a CEO, was a huge advocate of women acknowledging skills in out of work activities, such as organising cake sales or being a school governor). I’ve spoken to loads of mums and whatever our situation we all think it could be better – I think we all need to give ourselves a break and realise we’re doing a great job right now with what we have!

THe BuSINeSS MuM Claire, Mum to Lewis, age 3
have a varied work background. I’d worked my way up the corporate ladder after leaving school, spending many years as a civil servant working for The Department for Work and Pensions and Her Majesty’s Court Service, before taking on a more local sales role. Three years later in 2010, I had our son Lewis and things changed for me. He was my world and I knew that my priority was to raise him myself, however financially we couldn’t afford for me to sacrifice my income completely. I returned to my job working part time hours but still felt like I was missing out on so much time with Lewis. A friend that worked in the finance industry told me about some evening positions they had available so I gave that a try. However very quickly I realised that juggling being a Mum and working until 9pm at night wasn’t as easy as I expected, and although it gave me that time with Lewis, I didn’t get to see anyone else as they worked whilst I was at home and vice versa. It was then that I stumbled across an advert for Forever Living. The lady that introduced me to the company, came to see me with her 8 week old daughter. I could see just how flexible the business was for her and thought if she could do it, then perhaps I could too. I got to work very quickly, fitting in meetings and events around my evening hours and looking after Lewis during the day. I had to use my time wisely as
it was limited. Six months down the line, I was able to leave my job and focus on developing my business and more importantly, spend lots of time with Lewis. Fast forward 2 years, I’m now earning a full time income for a few hours work per week, still very flexibly around Lewis, so that when he’s not at nursery we still get time together. I never have to worry about childcare, I’m the Mum who can always drop him off and pick him up and be at home with him if he’s ill. I can take the school holidays off and still get paid! It’s the best of both worlds - being your own boss but without all the risks and costs involved in a traditional business. I feel extremely lucky to have found this opportunity, the income is great but I’ve also developed massively on a personal level. When I started my business, my confidence and self esteem were at rock bottom. I meet many Mum’s at home that feel like this, going from having a career to being the Mum at home and not being able to contribute to the household income is never easy. Forever have Investor In People Champion Accredited Training, so with this, along with the support of the team I work with, you can become the best you that you can be.

Kirsty, Mum to two boys aged 7 years and 18 months.
inding myself out of work after meeting my soon-to-be husband and giving birth to my second child, I decided to take up a hobby to learn a new skill. That hobby was needlecraft - learning how to sew and make gifts. When word got out about my crafts I was invited to take a stall at a local Christmas Craft Fair. To my amazement I made £100 that day selling beautiful gifts from Owl key rings to Polar bears to hang on your tree, Christmas puddings and lots more My business just took off from there with orders coming in from various sources. I decided to take the plunge and in January of this year I became a proper business: ‘Kirsty’s Kushty Krafts! I am now a full time Mother to two boys and I
run my own handmade craft business from home, working around my children. They are my priority, always have and always will be. I did not have the best of upbringings, living with an abusive parent, so want to ensure I do the best for my children. I never want them to have an unhappy childhood Being able to work for yourself gives you more freedom - no pressure from a boss, you work when you want to, are around for your children and don’t incur any childcare costs.
