Summer 2013 Contents
Hello.... I hope as you’re reading this the sun is shining and the children are playing happily outdoors, because unfortunately as I write, the rain is pouring down and Summer is nowhere to be seen! Nothing we can do about the weather though so better to just get on and have fun regardless. Come rain or shine there is plenty going on this Summer to keep the whole family entertained. So much so we’ve merged our usual Events Diary into a 6 page ‘What’s On’ guide starting on page 6 - so you can start planning your Summer right away! We’ve brought you several interesting and useful articles this issue, including a Starting School feature on page 30, Caring for Your Child’s Feet on page 35 and Choosing a Nursery School on page 36. There’s also our next installment of Tots Nature Watch, on page 27, with what to look out for this Summer. As well as all the interesting articles there is of course all the advertisements too. Being a targeted publication, aimed at parents and carers of young children, the advertisements are all relevant so please take the time to look at them, and remember if you respond to an advert, to tell them where you saw it! Wishing you all a long and glorious summer..

On The Trail Of Royal History
W
ith the recent discovery of the bones of King Richard III, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze has a timely and appropriate historical theme for 2013. Created in the shape of a ‘boar’ (Richard III’s emblem), this year’s Wistow Maze has been designed not only to intrigue and delight our appetite for all things historical, but also to test visitors’ knowledge of our great British Kings & Queens. “This year the Wistow Maze really has the winning combination of fun and learning, as well as being a celebration of one of the biggest archaeological finds for decades”, explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze.

The Maze features over 3 miles of intricate pathways through 8 acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving unrivalled 3D panoramic views. Diana continues: “The challenge for visitors is to find 12 quiz boards hidden amongst the pathways in the giant maze. Each quiz board focuses on a British monarch and will help unravel the answer to the Quiz Trail, whilst also giving top facts about that particular King or Queen”. An excellent, family day out, visitors can not only pit their wits against the maze but can also take part in a variety of mini mazes, games and table top activities in the Activity Funyard, which includes a space hopper track, hoopla and a football shooting game. Across the road is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops. Featured Class: Nene Valley Dance Academy Nene Valley Dance Academy is a dance school that provides dance classes for pupils aged 18 months through to adults. We teach several different dance styles including ballet, tap and street dance. We also run a glee club for children and can provide private singing and dance lessons. We pride ourselves on offering a family friendly dance school whose main ethos is that everyone has the chance to shine. Pupils have the opportunity to perform at our annual show, participate at showcases in London, perform in local carnivals and fetes and take examinations through the NATD and IDTA. They can even come to Malta and visit our twinned dance school.
Talk us through a typical class
Each class begins with a warm up and corner work. Pupils will then learn a routine and recap routines that they have previously learnt. The class finishes with a game using the dances that they have learnt and a cool down to ensure muscles they have used are stretched out. We always finish each class with a bow and a clap to recognise everyone’s achievement in the class that day.
How do classes benefit children?
Our dance classes encourage social interaction, build co-ordination and memory skills, bring out pupils confidence and most of all teach pupils a new skill.
What ages are the classes for?
We hold classes specifically for 2 – 3 years old such
as street tots, baby ballet and tap and freestyle classes. We also provide dance classes for 4-6 years in these dance styles. Alongside the dance classes we run a Mums and Tots exercise class which is for confident movers upwards and a Little Movers class which is for 18 months upwards and includes games, dance, singing and exercise.
When and where do you run classes? The classes are run at our dedicated dance studio in Corby on Elizabeth Street. We are situated on the corner of Stuart Road opposite the police station, on the second floor of Stuart House.
How long does each class last?
Each class runs for 45 minutes apart from the Little Movers, Baby ballet and Tap combined and Mums and Tots which run for 1 hour.
How much does a class cost?
The classes cost £2.50 for the 45 minute classes and £4.00 for the hour classes.

Tots Nature Watch: Summer 2013 Ramblings of a Country Park Ranger
S
ummer time – blue skies, long, hot days (we hope) and a great time to be outdoors. Birds and insects of all kinds will be busy everywhere – in the sky, in the trees and in the grass. Northamptonshire’s Country Parks are great places to visit for a wildlife spotting “safari”. Can you and your tot spot the 5 signs of summer we’ve listed on the right? Why not organise your own bug hunt with your tot – simply lay a white sheet on the ground under a bush or tree and shake the branches. You will be surprised at the bugs and beasties that drop onto the sheet! Remember don’t squash them. Encourage your children to look at the different shapes, colours, sizes and movements before shaking them free. Summer is also a great time to look at different kinds of plant leaves to try and work out if they might have any special properties. For example: • The nettle - it stings but it is also great food for caterpillars and once upon a time was used to make fibre for clothing • The dock leaf – can be used to rub on nettle stings to alleviate the itching • The thistle – prickly if you sit on it but butterflies and bees love its flowers for nectar. • Conker tree leaf – very shady tree and if you scrunch the leaf up very hard with a bit of water you can make a kind of soap!
Tot to Spot
Can you and your tot spot these 5 signs of summer: 1.
A dragonfly
2.
A swallow swooping
3.
Minty smelling leaf
4.
A blue flower
5.
A fish in water
Country Park Events
All 5 of Northamptonshire’s Country Parks run ‘Nature Tots’ sessions once a month in school term time. These sessions combine a nature walk with arts and crafts activities. Each session costs £3.50. Booking is essential. Throughout the school holidays the parks will have wildlife quiz trails running with clues dotted around the park – just pop along and get yourself a sheet. Some Country Parks will also be running ‘Wildlife Wednesdays’ during the school summer holidays. Ranger led Pond-Dipping or Mini Beast Safari half-hourly sessions at Fermyn Woods from 1112.30pm and 1.30-3pm and Pond-dipping half-hourly sessions at Barnwell Country Park from 11-1pm. Sessions are £2 per child. Please purchase tickets from the café on the day at Fermyn and directly from the Ranger at Barnwell. There are also some one off events throughout the Summer. Please see the Time for Tots Events page for details or visit:

W
hen your child starts school for the first time it’s a big milestone in both their life and yours and it can mean significant changes in family life, especially if it’s your eldest or youngest child. It can be an anxious time for all concerned so we’ve compiled some tips to help you prepare.
In the preceding weeks
1. Help your child develop the skills they need to be independent e.g. dressing themselves, taking responsibility for their own belongings, taking themselves to the toilet 2. Talk to your child about school so they know what to expect. Tell them what will happen on the first day, include stories from your own school days and read them story books about school. Make sure everything you say is positive. 3. Involve your child in the preparations eg let them choose a pencil case and lunchbox 4. Get your child’s eyes tested. Problems with eyesight can seriously affect a child’s learning and development. Eye tests are free on the NHS for children. 5. Read to and share books with your child. Research shows that children that are read to from an early age generally learn faster and perform better in school. 6. Purchase the school uniform and equipment in plenty of time to avoid a last minute rush.
7. Label absolutely everything. All clothes (including socks and shoes), bags, coat, lunch box etc. You’ll be surprised how many children have identical items! 8. If your child must take packed lunches, make sure they can undo their lunchbox themselves and get them used to using one over the summer. 9. Make the journey to school a few times to judge how long it will take and get your child used to the school run, the buildings and people. 10. Have a few practice runs the week before to get your child used to the time they will have to get up in the morning and go to bed at night. 11. Try and ensure your child knows other children that will be in their class. It will make settling in so much easier. 12. Help your child build their confidence, so they don’t feel afraid to ask for help, but also encourage them to be thoughtful about others and to take turns and share. 13. Make the school aware of any special needs, medical problems, or likes and dislikes your child may have 14. Note down all the school dates on your calendar as soon as you know them 15. It’s perfectly normal for the parents, as well as the child, to feel anxious. If you do, try talking it through with someone. If you have a friend with a child already at school, talk to them. Don’t let your child pick up on any anxieties you have though, as this will only add to their own.

The night before
1. Talk your child through what will happen the next day to help prepare them for the morning. 2. Make sure your child’s uniform is washed, ironed and laid out ready. 3. If they need a packed lunch, make this the night before. 4. Pack their school bag and leave it ready by the door. 5. Try to ensure your child has an early night. They’ve got a big day ahead in the morning!
On the day
1. Make sure you’re all up and about in plenty of time. If you’re rushing to get ready it will make the morning all the more stressful for you and your child. 2. Take a photograph of your child in their school uniform! It’s a milestone in their life and you will all enjoy looking back at the photos in years to come.
3. Try not to cry in front of your child. Seeing you upset will upset them and make them feel more anxious. If you feel the tears welling up pinching yourself is supposed to help! 4. If your child is clingy and won’t leave you, tell them about the dull activities you have planned for the day! 5. Give your child lots of attention when they come home and even plan a treat for them e.g. a trip to the local park or their favourite tea.
The first few weeks
1. Have patience. Your child’s behaviour may be different as they settle in and adapt. 2. Show a genuine interest in what they’ve done each day and encourage them to talk to you. 3. Allow them time to unwind when they get home and try and spend some quality time with them each day, even if it’s just watching TV. 4. You’ll probably find your child is more tired in the evenings so you may have to bring their bed time forward. It’s recommended reception age children be in bed for 7pm on a school night. 5. Establish a morning routine as soon as possible, it makes for less stressful mornings. 6. Always check their book bags when they get in and read any letters you get from school straight away, adding important dates or things to remember to your diary or calendar. 7. Be careful not to ignore your other children. Make a fuss of them too. They might find it strange that their older sibling isn’t around as much. 8. Try to get to know other Mums, chat to them at the school gates. This will make the whole experience more pleasurable all round! 9. Try to read to your child every night, not just in the first few weeks but the years to come. This will aid your child’s literacy skills no end and give them a higher aptitude for learning.
A BIG thank-you to all the teachers, parents and organisations that have contributed to this article. And good luck to all children starting school this September! To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

Mindfully Breathe, Relax & Increase Wellbeing
E
ven though breathing is something we do every minute of the day, it is mostly an unconscious process, an automatic response. But our breath can tell us a lot about how we cope with stress in our busy lives, especially if you are running around after a family too. Sometimes when we concentrate deeply on what we are doing, we actually stop breathing for a moment in time, which increases our internal stress and makes us feel under even more pressure than is necessary. Learning to mindfully or consciously breathe can help you deepen and slow down your breath, which in turn relaxes you; helps your positive thoughts flow better and increases your sense of wellbeing. As a Yoga Teacher and Cognitive Hypnotherapist I teach my clients how to relax and release stress/ tension through a Yogic practice called ‘Deergha Swasam’ or the ‘3 part breath’. Try this practice out: • Sit comfortably with an up-right spine and your chest lifted (making space for your diaphragm). • Close your eyes and focus on your breath, breathing in and out through your nose.
• Then imagining you have 3 parts of your lung space ~ as you inhale through your nose, breathe deep into your diaphragm (to expand your belly), continue the same breath up through your mid chest (to expand your lungs/ rib cage), all the way up to your upper chest (lifting the collar bone slightly). • As you Exhale, you reverse the breath and empty the upper chest, mid chest and finally empty the lower chest/diaphragm and pull back your belly. • Continue this mindful, conscious breathing practice for 3 to 5 minutes, gradually slowing down the exhalation, to become longer than the inhalation. To learn more about breath and relaxation contact Harshani.

Caring For Your Child’s Feet
Advice from Podiatrist & Owner of Funky Lil Feet
J
ane Warne, Podiatrist & Owner of Funky Lil Feet, specialises in children’s foothealth and Gait. She has provided the following tips and advice to help any parent make the right informed choice about their child’s footcare and footwear:
For Babies..
A baby’s foot is not just a smaller version of our own. At birth the 26 bones that will eventually make the adult foot are mostly cartilage which makes them pliable and susceptible to damage. To allow for baby’s feet to develop naturally without distortion always keep bedclothes loose fitting and light (or in the case of Grobags allow plenty of space) so the feet are not restricted. Likewise always ensure there is plenty of room in their babygros and tights/socks etc to prevent curling of the toes which can result in permanent damage to growing bones. Encourage your baby to exercise its feet by kicking and similar actions, this helps to develop the foot muscles.
For Toddlers and Young Children...
Don’t force your child into walking. They will start when they are ready usually between 10 and 20 months of age. Encourage your child to walk barefoot indoors as this allows the foot to develop and strengthen. When your child is on its feet and attempting the first tottering steps you are ready to buy their first tot style shoes. Always ensure your shoes are purchased in a reputable shoe shop, where children’s feet are properly measured and fitted by a trained member of staff and where there is a selection of shoes offered in different width fittings and half sizes. All feet are different and at Funky Lil Feet we will also take into account the shape and depth of the foot whilst fitting the shoes – therefore thinking outside of the shoe box - which means that sometimes your child’s foot will not fit the size they measured on the gauge! Inspect your childs feet regularly as children often can’t feel any damage being done. Look for any abnormalities such as cuts, breaks in the skin and any unusual changes in colour or temperature. We will help you choose shoes that give your child stability, support and protection. An ideal shoe should be soft and flexible with breathable leather uppers and fully adjustable fastenings to ensure a snug fit.
Pop back in to have a fitting check when you’re passing, ideally between six and eight weeks after the first fit. We will give you an honest assessment; our fitters are not paid any commission on sales and do not have any sales targets to achieve. We simply want to give the best help and advice we can! Should you have any concerns about your child’s foot health then Jane Warne, our podiatrist, is usually on hand to help and all our fitters are trained by Jane to ensure that everyone receives the same professional and courteous advice.
Funky Lil Feet is celebrating its 8th Birthday this year and to celebrate, they’re giving local parents a 10% discount on their purchase! See the voucher in our Special Offers section.

Choosing a Nursery School for your Child What to ask when looking around a childcare setting...
1. Can I meet the manager? The nursery manager is responsible for the quality of care in the nursery by ensuring that staff are properly trained and overseeing the kind of activities on offer. You will get a feel for the nursery ethos when you meet the manger. 2. How do you help new children settle in? Check if the nursery offers “trial” sessions before your baby’s first day. Will the staff call you if your child hasn’t settled, to ask your advice? Can you call the nursery manager during your working day to reassure yourself that all is well? 3. What is the routine for each session? Is there a structure to each session? Is there flexibility for incorporating each child’s own requirements and routines at home? 4. Where will my baby take naps? If your baby is used to peace and quiet at home, they may settle quicker at a nursery if there is a separate sleep room. 5. How much time do the children spend outside? Although not a legal requirement, a good childcare setting will allow children plenty of outdoor play in all weathers. Are there waterproof trousers on standby? Are babies taken out in the fresh air every day, too? 6. How will you let me know what my child’s eaten or how their toilet training is going? Does the nursery keep a record for you to take home or is the information kept somewhere easily accessible? It may sound like a minor point now, but many a working parent has agonised over whether their child has eaten their greens/drunk enough water/attempted the potty! 7. Will you let me know if my child isn’t developing as expected? Do the nursery staff write regular observations on each child? Does each child have their own profile or Learning Journey? Look for a nursery that encourages parents to chat about their child’s progress on a daily basis. Parents’ Evenings can be very useful even at this young age.
8. What is the ratio of staff to children? The current statutory ratios are 1:3 for under 1 and 1 year-olds, 1:4 for 2 year olds and 1:8 for 3+ year olds. This is due to change in the Autumn though with childcarers able to look after more children. Will they be changing their ratios in the future? 9. Do you have a key worker scheme? Does each child have 1 member of staff that has main responsibility for their welfare and the reporting of progress to parents? 10. Can I have a chat with the members of staff in my child’s room? Spend a few minutes talking with the staff who will be caring for your child, directly. Do they seem to enjoy their work? Are the nursery children happy in their company? 11. What level of qualifications do the staff have? At least half of the staff must be qualified to Level 3. Look for a nursery where staff are actively encouraged to develop their professional skills through further training. 12. How do you manage behaviour and what are your policies on discipline? It’s important for nursery staff and parents that a clearly defind policy is in place. Ask to see the policy. 13. Do you provide meals, snacks and nappies or will they have to be provided from home? Something to bear in mind when looking at the cost of a session at each nursery. 14. Can I see this week’s menu? (if food is provided) Don’t rely on promises to serve “healthy” food – check the menu for yourself. 15. Can I see the OFSTED report? This can be a useful guide to the standard of care at the nursery. If the nursery doesn’t offer you a copy, you can search for it on www.ofsted.gov.uk.

Samaritans We’re here for you
S
Who are we? What do we do?
amaritans offer confidential, emotional support to distressed, depressed, bereaved and suicidal callers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It is often easier for a caller to talk to a completely anonymous volunteer and reveal their most personal and distressing thoughts, rather than offload to a family member or friend for fear of worrying or upsetting that person. The Samaritans can be contacted by phone, e-mail, text or in person at our office in Montagu Street, Kettering, where we have a team of around 70 trained listening volunteers who give up their time freely and willingly, day and night, to help those in distress. We are here to listen and support callers but never to give advice. It is by talking through problems and crises that callers at the end of the conversation, which can be very lengthy, can see a possible course of action which is right for them.
No one said it would be easy but... Are you finding being an
expectant parent or parent of young children harder than you thought it would be ?
Rachel Bridgeford, BSc.(hons) Dip. Adv. MBACP Qualified counsellor and mum of two.

Follow-up calls can be offered in certain circumstances and arrangements made to ring the caller back to see how they are progressing. If the person is still distressed, another call may be suggested. Samaritans are self-funding and receive no state aid so raising money is ongoing to raise the £20,000 per annum it costs for phone calls, to maintain the premises in Montagu Street and provide a reliable service to callers. We receive 2,000+ calls a month in Kettering and over the Christmas and New Year period took a call every 6 seconds. Our message to all callers is that we do care, are here for you and you are never alone. Whatever you’re going through, the Samaritans go through it with you. Extended Opening at The Nursery at Northampton High School
T
he Nursery at Northampton High School has been providing the perfect start in education for girls for many years and now aim to provide the perfect service for parents also. Previously only open during school term-time the Nursery will now provide up to 46 weeks of education, so that the girls can continue to learn and develop in our fantastic setting for 10 extra weeks during the school holidays. Girls may join The Nursery at the beginning of the term when they turn 3 and can automatically progress on into the Junior School reception class. The 10 extra weeks of education also applies to girls in our reception class, who can continue to learn and make use of our incredible facilities during school holidays if required. The girls in nursery are welcome to join us from 7.45am for breakfast and some relaxed morning activities. During the day, girls spend some of the time in age specific groups and other times in groups of their own choice. Activities are planned for each girl by their key-worker, taking prior learning and individual needs and interests into consideration. The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is covered as a minimum in nursery. Our excellent staff to pupil ratio enables your daughters’ teacher
to get to know her as an individual and help her to develop confidence and enthusiasm for learning. A healthy morning snack and a choice of hot lunches are provided and girls will have a ballet lesson with our ballet teacher and accompanying pianist as well as Physical Education and Music lessons. Our girls enjoy spending one morning a week in our outdoor ‘Wild Area” where they enjoy playing in and learning about nature and the environment. Learning to read is an important aspect of nursery life and we have our own reading scheme, which involves collaboration between home and school. Some girls go home at 3.20pm however they have the option to stay for GAP club till 6pm where they are joined by other girls from the Junior School for creative and fun activities and a snack tea to tide them over until home time. Only you will know when a nursery is right for you. We would be delighted to show you around the Nursery at Northampton High School at any time. Please contact the registrar, Mrs Heather Berry (01604 765765 or h.berry@nhs.gdst.net) to arrange an appointment.
