benezer Scrooge is a mean old man and he doesn’t believe in Christmas. He doesn’t have time for family and friends, in fact he’d rather spend the season alone at home, counting his money. Well, this year we’re going to show mean old Ebenezer Scrooge what he’s been missing… Winter is cold and stories are told to warm the heart. This Christmas, The Castle presents an exciting, gloriously entertaining and genuinely heart-warming new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story. Packed with songs and jokes and festive shenanigans, spooks and surprises, it’s a tall tale with a truly uplifting message for the festive season. Ebenezer Scrooge is not a bad man, not really. He used to be a good man and, with our help, he will be again... A Christmas Carol is a musical fantasy for all the family, silly enough for grown-ups and smart enough for children of all ages.

Clubs & Classes
Featured Class: Little Kickers
T
he Little Kickers pre-school football programme first started over 10 years ago in London. Since then, the programme has grown phenomenally, and in the UK alone now provides over 30,000 enthusiastic young footballers with the chance to let off steam and get fit each week. Approx 350 of these attend classes in and around Kettering and Corby, with growth set to continue as children take the opportunity to gain an early introduction to the nation’s favourite sport. The programme was developed by child health specialists in conjunction with UK FA qualified coaches, and works on the basis that children are much more likely to learn if their imaginations are engaged and skills are introduced through games, rather than formal drills.
What is the aim of the classes?
We have 4 different football classes, each tailored to a different age group, and 2 core beliefs that we take into every session: Firstly, we believe in something we call “Play not Push”. It means teaching football in a fun, pressurefree environment. We want to give children a positive introduction to sport as a whole, not just football, so they’re more likely to stay healthy and active throughout their lives. Secondly, we believe football can be educational. Coached in the right way it can stimulate imagination and aid early development skills such as learning colours and numbers, following instructions and playing as a team.
Talk us through a typical class
The content covered in our classes varies between age groups but generally the class is broken down into 3 areas: Exercises and Warm up: The children begin by playing games without a football that work on movement skills such as jumping, running and dodging whilst learning about colours, numbers and increasing their confidence. This is all done through themed games such as an obstacle course “through the jungle”. Ball Skills: Here, each child has a football and works on a range of age related football skills to include directional kicking, dribbling and ball control although to them they may simply be “firing cannon balls” at the “crocodile” with their feet! Goal Scoring: Each week the children get the
opportunity to experience success and score some goals after completing certain tasks. These tasks give the children the opportunity to become more confident at listening, working as part of a team, balancing and much more too! Take a look at our “Little Kickers” youtube video for more of an insight!
How do classes benefit children?
Improves social and emotional skills: listening, confidence, team work, peer interaction, independence, following rules and sharing; as well as physical skills: balance, agility, co-ordination, control, kicking, speed, stamina. Its also great fun and keeps them fit and healthy.
What ages are the classes for?
2 to 7 years currently although we are looking into class for 18 months+ if there is enough interest.
When and where do you run classes?
Saturday morning at Lodge Park, Corby and Southfield School for Girls, Kettering. Sunday morning Bishop Stopford School, Kettering
How long does each class last?
Between 45 and 55 minutes depending on age (along with some time for a kickabout before class!)
How much does a class cost? 6 weeks is £39 or 13 weeks is £78.

Groococks: Then and Now! A
little known fact...In 1906 Groococks opened their shop to the public, a lifetime before Padders came along! In 1914 Thomas Groocock established his own company, T Groocock & Co (Rothwell), making traditional welted shoes. He did his part for the war effort making army boots for the boys and in the 50s jumped straight on the band wagon producing 'Winkle Pickers' for the fashion conscious! Groococks were also making shoes for high street brands including Clarks, Next and Babour to name a few. Then 1982 hit and Groococks produced a brand that changed the course of the company, Padders. Padders shoes were created with exceptional comfort in mind, we wanted nothing but feel-goodfeet! But we couldn't just stop at making shoes, we wanted to sell them as well. In 2004 our shop moved from Rothwell to Kettering. The shop turned into so much more than selling 'seconds' of Padders. Taking on-board what our customers were saying we introduced more and more brands including Fit Flop, Sketchers and Rieker, all selling alongside our own brand Padders. 2012 was a crazy year, we kitted out our Children's department, we brought brands in like Start-Rite, Geox and Lelli Kelly, we introduced a measuring and fitting service and included a play area for the little ones while you shop for shoes! With Padders already having a pretty impressive name it was easy for our shop to jump on the back of an already successful brand, however Padders wasn't us, we are and will always be Groococks, just like we were in 1906. Throughout the decades of change Groococks has always remained a family affair. We are proud to have an independent family run shoe shop in the heartland of the British footwear industry and now is the time to go back to our heritage. So pop along to the best shoe shop for miles, visit our cafĂŠ, take a look at some bargains in our Clearance shop, get fitting advice from our trained staff but most importantly come and enjoy a relaxed shopping experience with a wonderful variety of styles and brands - with free parking as well we're the destination to be at!! Here at Groococks we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their custom over the years, your support really is appreciated! Lots of Love Team Groococks xx

Pause for Thought..
The Controlling Partner
“What have you been doing all day?” “Well. I tidied things up, went shopping, caught up with Kathy for a quick coffee, she brought Ben and Reena with her…the kids had fun. Then I took them to the park then came home, made the tea, did the dishes and tidied some more. Why do you ask?” “The place still looks like a bomb has dropped. Do you really think you needed to spend that time with Kathy? I’m not even sure I’ve got clean clothes for tomorrow…” “I don’t see friends that often… She was only here for an hour.” “Well, I still think you could’ve prioritised things a bit better. After all, you do have responsibilities, you can’t just choose to relax when there are things that need to be done.” “I don’t call managing 4 under 5s relaxing.” “Don’t argue with me. You’re supposed to keep this place in a decent state and it’s a tip. You have all day, never make a penny and can’t even do that one simple task….” Please mention Time for Tots when responding to an advertisement

A
nyone recognise this conversation? Let me re-phrase that. You’ve probably all had that conversation. There’s a person in your life with impossibly high expectations. They nag you incessantly, make you feel terrible about yourself and generally give nowhere near enough credence to your achievements. Maybe you’re sitting, thinking now… Who is this terrible person? However, they’re not terrible, simply, humanly, fallible. In their harsh judgement of you they miss the sheer beauty of the things you achieve, in the daily smiles of the small people who surround you. They have yet to learn that balance i.e. seeing the whole package that is you, is infinitely important to their own outlook on life, and, therefore, to their ability to feel happiness and joy. Yet again, you ask yourself, who is this person?
“In their harsh judgement of you they miss the sheer beauty of the things you achieve” It is the one who is closest to you in the world, the one you were born with and, the only one who will be with you when you die. The opinion of no other matters, in comparison to this one. It is you.
“Seeing the whole package that is you, is infinitely important to their own outlook on life, and, therefore to their ability to feel happiness and joy” a moment, for all those unfortunate souls who are genuinely subjected to such harsh treatment from another family member and remind yourself that you’re lucky for the choices you have. Change the way you talk to yourself. Don’t be the abusive, criticising partner to your own soul. Don’t expect so much of yourself that you set yourself up for failure. Just know, you are good enough and that’s good enough. Even if, at first, you don’t believe it could be this simple, just try it. Just for a week. Every time you catch yourself putting yourself down say something different. Say it out loud if you need to. In order for new habits to form, enough repetition must be given to behaviour you are trying adopt. So, for every one criticism you level at yourself, there should be several counteractive statements. They can be all the same, or all different. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that you respect yourself enough to try.
Read back now and ask yourself if you now recognise this conversation. Then ask yourself this… How did you feel, when you read the dialogue above for the first time? How did you feel about that partner? How did you feel about how they were treating the other who was doing her level best the only way she knew how? How would you change them and their responses for the better?
“Don’t expect so much of yourself that you set yourself up for failure. Just know, you are good enough, and that’s good enough”
Self-talk is incredibly important. It makes you who you are. If you talk to yourself in such an unpleasant way you can’t then be surprised when you begin to feel worthless, timid and self-loathing. Spare a thought, for

Meet our Autumn
‘Mum in a Million’ T
Time for Mum

Sponsored by
hank-you to everyone who wrote in with a nomination for our Autumn Mum in a Million competition.
Picking a ‘winner’ is never easy, as there are always so many worthy nominations, but this issue we’ve decided to award the accolade to Jenny from Northampton who has helped so many children and who I’m sure you’ll agree, is a very worthy winner. We are delighted to be able to treat Jenny to a gourmet dining for two experience at Highgate House, courtesy of Red Letter Days. Jenny was nominated by her daughter Sophie. Here’s why Jenny is a ‘Mum in a Million’ (in Sophie’s words): I would like to nominate my Mum, Jenny. She is totally brilliant and has been a Mother to many, many children over the years. She has been a foster carer for 15 years and has fostered over 55 children, as well as adopting 2 children - she would probably adopt them all if we had a house big enough! She is still fostering now and currently has 2 foster children at home, together with the 2 children she adopted. My Mum has a passion for caring and really wants what is best for the children. She is extremely busy all the time and is constantly on the go. My Mum works so hard to provide a loving, stable, family home for the children. I would love it if she could go for the tea as I know she just needs a little time for her. She has given so much, she deserves something back.

I have a small studio in Tur Langton, dedicated to photographing newborns and children. How long have you been in business? I have been a full-time photographer for nearly 10 years now. My father brought me my first camera when I was 10, he was a full time professional photographer and taught me photography from an early age. Initially it was just a hobby. Why did you decide to start? I didn’t want to be a photographer! I graduated from Goldsmith’s University with a first BAHon in Media and Communications and a passion for the film industry. I graduated and eventually became a full time video editor. I worked on music documentaries and edited music videos. I edited many videos including videos for Blue (All Rise), Holly Vallence (Kiss Kiss), Melanie C etc and documentaries for UB40 and Damien Hirst. My twins were born prematurely and one of my daughters needed complex care and I found it impossible to continue to edit. My father retired and gave me all his old lenses and studio equipment and I started by chance to photograph babies and children. I always intended to go back to video editing but my photography business grew and now I wouldn’t want to go back and love what I do. What do you like about it? I make the school run, I go to all the
Christmas nativities and am here for all Molly’s hospital appointments and sick days without making excuses to The Boss! How well does it fit in with family life? Reasonably well, I work many Saturdays though, often for 10 hours or more and in the summer this is not so convenient. What do you find are the disadvantages? I don’t like physically working from home, I find it very difficult to take time off. Photography is also very competitive. A lot of my job is marketing and business admin which I would love to be able to afford to give to someone else. What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of working for themselves? Spend time planning before you set up. I made many mistakes in the early days not having a clear business plan. You have to make a profit and it is very exciting to get bookings but you don’t want to be ‘a busy fool’, to begin with you overlook the fact you have to not only cover your overheads and insurance but pay the bills as well. The Underwear Rule
Teach your child the Underwear Rule and help protect them from abuse
The Underwear Rule is a simple way that parents can help keep children safe from abuse - without using scary words or mentioning sex. The NSPCC has developed this simple guide for parents, (and a child-friendly version available online), to help you talk PANTS with your child. PANTS is an easy way for you to explain to your child the key elements of the Underwear Rule:
Privates are private
Be clear with your child that the parts of their body covered by underwear are private. Explain to your child that no one should ask to see or touch their private parts or ask them to look at or touch anyone else’s. Sometimes doctors, nurses or family members might have to. Explain that this is OK, but that those people should always explain why, and ask your child if it’s OK first.
Always remember your body belongs to you
Let your child know their body belongs to them, and no one else. No-one has the right to make them do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. And if anyone tries, tell your child they have the right to say no. Remind your child that they can always talk to you about anything that worries or upsets them.
No means no
Make sure your child understands that they have the right to say “no” to unwanted touch - even to a family member or someone they know or love. This shows that they’re in control of their body and their feelings should be respected. If a child feels confident to say no to their own family, they are more likely to say no to others.
Talk about secrets that upset you Explain the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ secrets. Phrases like “it’s our little secret” are an abuser’s way of making a child feel worried, or scared to tell someone what is happening to them. Good secrets can be things like surprise parties or presents for other people. Bad secrets make you feel sad, worried or frightened. Your child needs to feel able to speak up about secrets that worry them and confident that saying something won’t get them into trouble. Telling a secret will never hurt or worry anybody in your family or someone you know and love.
Speak up, someone can help
Tell your child that if they ever feel sad, anxious or frightened they should talk to an adult they trust. This doesn’t have to be a family member. It can also be a teacher or a friend’s parent - or even ChildLine Remind them that whatever the problem, it’s not their fault and they will never get into trouble for speaking up.
