elcome to the winter issue. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! The most exciting time of the year with young children. Turn to pages 8 to 15 to start planning your festive activities with our Christmas What’s On guide. There is a great range of activities to choose from this season from train rides to snow globes, Santa’s grottos to Christmas crafts. Some activities are even free so entertaining the children needn’t cost a fortune. Northamptonshire Libraries Early Years Team have written an insightful article for us on pages 31 to 33. Research has proven that reading to and sharing books with your child from a young age has a great impact on their progress at school and can enhance their development significantly. The article includes some tips on sharing books with your child and details of the Bookstart Scheme run by the libraries.

We’ve once again produced our super handy desk calendar for 2017. We’ve got a limited number to give out to readers. Turn the page to find out how to get your hands on one. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year with your families. See you in 2017!

ngels Day Nursery in Kettering welcomed two special guests recently as the Mayor and Mayoress of the town cut the ribbon on a brand new outdoor playground. The playground, which has been created in conjunction with a market-leading landscape gardening company, will be used by children aged two to four and includes a trike bike track, a log climber and a large shaded sand pit with a pulley and bucket system. Planter beds to encourage gardening, water play equipment and a ‘welly shed’ have also been incorporated. As well as cutting the ribbon on the new playground, the Mayor and Mayoress were also treated to a tour of the nursery and an afternoon tea prepared by Chris Neal, the nursery chef. The Mayor also built sandcastles with the children at the new sand pit! Simeon Singer, owner of Angels Day Nursery, said of the event: “We were delighted to welcome the Mayor to our nursery to open the fabulous new playground and showcase the rest of our wonderful facilities. We put a lot of thought into the new playground and will take great pleasure from seeing the children use it to develop their physical and social skills and, generally, just have fun!” The Mayor of the Borough of Kettering, Councillor Scott Edwards, added: “Myself and the Mayoress were honoured to be given the opportunity to officially open the new outdoor play space at Angels Day Nursery. The facilities, inside and out, are wonderful and a real asset to the town of Kettering.” Angels Day Nursery, which caters for children between the ages of 0-4, has recently been inspected by Ofsted and retained it’s ‘Outstanding’ rating for the third consecutive time. The nursery is inviting the local community to visit and take part in a guided ‘show around’ of the facilities. To find out more or book an appointment, call 01536 519926 or go to:

Clubs & Classes

Featured Class: Tots Play

T

ots Play offers a complete programme of classes, parties, information products and resources suitable for children from birth to around 2 and a half years, with a range of sessions aimed at different age groups.

Talk us through a typical class

We have 3 different classes depending on the age of your little one: Our classes always start with singing our Tots Play ‘Hello’ song to every little one, then in our Discovery Tots and Social Tots classes we sing a welcome song and do actions to our warm up. Following a warm up, we are ready to do some yoga and movement to recognisable tunes and nursery rhymes, before learning some signs and singing our signing song of the week. In Discovery Tots we do a sensory play activity together and in Social Tots we do a bit of learning about our bodies, opposites or colours and numbers. We understand the importance of allowing children the opportunity for independent play and learning, so following the group activities, we give children the chance for sensory play with parents and movement activities for the toddlers. Our classes all end with bubbles and singing our goodbye song with our puppet mascot, Totsy Monkey! Our Baby Development Course for our youngest tots follows a slightly different pattern and also includes baby massage, tummy time ideas and calming holds and techniques.

What is the aim of your classes?

Our classes aim to give you the confidence and inspiration needed to play, connect and enjoy special time with your baby or toddler in ways which will enhance their development through sensory play, yoga, sign language, singing and massage. V

How do classes benefit children?

We know that young children learn best when using their whole body and all their senses and at Tots Play there is so much to get involved with that they can do just that. Each session includes a carefully chosen mix of structured and free play activities including songs, movement, games and equipment play. So whether your child is thoughtful and reserved or a nonstop action seeker, they will have the opportunity to play and explore in ways they’ll love – allowing their personality to shine, new skills to develop and flourish and confidence to soar.

What ages are the classes for?

Our Baby Development Course is for babies from birth to 6 months, Discovery Tots is suitable from 8 weeks until actively crawling and Social Tots is for the crawlers until approximately 2½ years.

When and where do you run classes?

We run classes on Tuesdays in Burton Latimer, Wednesdays in Mawsley and Fridays in Kettering (see our website for up to date times and locations).

How long does each class last?

Approximately 40 minutes for Discovery Tots and Social Tots and our Baby Development Course sessions last between 50 minutes and an hour.

How much does a class cost?

Our Baby Development Course is £50 for 6 weeks (includes massage oil, music and a colour workbook). Discovery Tots and Social Tots is £13 for 3 sessions as a trial and then £5.50 per class thereafter, payable as a half term block.

Library Services for Young Children By Northamptonshire Libraries Early Years Co-ordinator The Bookstart Scheme

Bookstart gives away free books to all babies and pre-schoolers and has great ideas for activities for toddlers too. You’ll get your free Bookstart pack in your baby’s first year, usually from your health visitor. The pack contains everything you need to get started sharing stories, rhymes and songs with your baby! Ask at your local library if you haven’t received your pack by the time your child reaches 1 year. Your child will get their Bookstart Treasure gift when they are 3 to 4 years old, from their nursery, playgroup or other early years setting. This pack contains everything you need to share stories, rhymes and songs with your pre-schooler! Ask at your local library if you haven’t received your gift by the time your child reaches 5 years. Excellent resources are also available to support children with additional needs and children who do not speak English as their first language.

Tips for sharing books with your child • Sit close together when sharing a book and encourage your child to hold the book themselves and/or turn the pages • Don’t be afraid to use funny voices – it’s a great way to make your child giggle. And don’t be afraid to sing either – they won’t care whether or not you sing in tune or know the words! • When you talk to your child about what’s going on in a book, give them plenty of time to respond. Try to ask questions that don’t require just yes or no answers. For example, ask them what they think will happen next ask or about how a character might be feeling • Sharing books isn’t just about the words - point to the pictures and relate them to something your child knows • Using a puppet to act out a story can help your child to understand what’s going on and learn how to pretend play. Why not pick a character from your book and use the puppet to show what they are doing? • And lastly – make it fun! It doesn’t matter how you read with a child, as long as you both enjoy the time together! Even tiny babies enjoy stories and rhymes. Sharing books with babies and toddlers is a great way to help them learn about their world, and talking about the pictures will help your child begin to talk. Try to make time to enjoy books every day – you can share books anywhere, anytime and a bedtime story is a lovely way to end the day.

To advertise call 0845 6439687 or e-mail info@timefortots.co.uk

32

Why are these packs important? The Save the children, “Ready to Read” report in 2015 shows that early language skills can have a major impact on the development of a child’s literacy skills during primary school and their ability to read well by the age of 11. This relationship starts very early in a child’s life. A child’s language skills at the age of 2 have a strong influence on their school readiness at the age of 5, and this can continue to affect how children get on at school and as they grow up. 5 year olds with poor language and literacy development face a significantly higher risk of low achievement at age 7 and beyond. So make sure you receive your free Bookstart packs and read our top tips for sharing books with your child. There are fun, free Bookstart events for families held every year – come along and join in the fun!

The Bookstart Bear Club!

The Bookstart Bear Club is a fun and engaging free reward scheme for all babies, toddlers and preschoolers and their families. How do I join? If you are a library member, you can join the Bookstart Bear Club in your local library, and receive your Bookstart Bear Club passport. What happens next? The aim is to collect paw stamps in your passport. You get a stamp for: • Borrowing books • Sharing books in the library • Attending Rhymetimes or book related activities Each time you have 6 stamps you will get a certificate. There are 10 certificates to collect.

Rhymetime

What are Rhymetimes? Sessions last between 20 minutes and half an hour. They are friendly, informal sessions where you can join in with action nursery rhymes and songs. • Rhymetimes are a good for helping with your child’s language development. • By using simple musical instruments and performing action songs babies develop language and rhythm. • They are an opportunity for you to learn some new rhymes to share at home with your child. Some libraries have separate Bounce and Rhyme Times. Bounce and Rhyme Time sessions are aimed at babies and non-walkers. It is a gentle, supportive and fun first activity which introduces nursery rhymes and songs to parents to interact with their baby. For more information about these sessions please contact your local library. Also, look out for National Bookstart Week. An annual week of sharing rhymes, stories and songs around the country-various events planned in libraries.

Children’s Centre services are available to everyone and are delivered by the Northamptonshire Libraries and Information Service. Their range of services include:

Business Mum: Marie McLoughlin

From Precious Moments Photography Name: Marie Family: 4 children aged 8, 6, 3 and 7 months Description of your business: I am a photographer and have my own photography studio to capture beautiful images to treasure forever How long have you been in business? I’ve enjoyed photography my whole life but I’ve been doing it for a living since 2010. What did you do before? I worked at a greeting cards company before starting Precious Moments. I started my business whilst I was pregnant with my second child. Why did you decide to start your business? To do something that let me be me, using my creative skills that I felt were going to waste but mainly to have the freedom of being self employed - so I could fit my work around family life. I was fed up of rushing around getting children to places so that I could be at work for a certain time! The children were missing out on a lots because I was not around and this is what made me want a change. What do you like about it? The freedom - being able to work around my own family. Meeting clients and their beautiful families! Using my creativity and love of photography to create lasting memories for people. It has helped me grow in confidence and as a person in general.

How well does it fit in with family life? It can be very hectic but it works for us as a family. I take the kids to school and pick them up, they do the clubs they want to do and I can go to sports days, concerts etc My husband looks after the kids when I have a shoot and I can do my editing and paperwork with the children at home or when they go to bed. What do you find are the drawbacks? When I get really busy (usually in the run up to Christmas) it gets quite stressful - I have to do very long hours to get editing and ordering done to meet with client deadlines, which isn’t easy with a baby that doesn’t sleep through, but I fuel up on coffee and slog on! You definitely have to be very motivated and have to carry on no matter what as the clients are relying on you to deliver a service. What advice would you give to other Mums thinking of working for themselves? Do it! To find out more about Precious Moments Photography, visit:

1. Consider your child’s age and needs. Younger children need closer attention. Some children flourish in small groups, others in larger groups. 2. Consider what hours you need childcare. Some providers offer cover early morning and later in the evening. Some providers are school term time only. 3. Look around the facilities. Are they clean and safe? 4. Ask about the activities the provider offers. Do they offer a range? Will your child be stimulated? 5. Look at the menu available. Will they cater for special requirements? 6. Ask for references and speak to other parents 7. Consider combining childcare if it would benefit you and/or your child 8. Don’t leave it to the last minute to book your childcare. Some providers have waiting lists. 9. Take your child with you when you look around and watch their reaction. With older children you can usually tell if they’re comfortable somewhere or not. 10. Research all your options well. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Time for Mum

Winter Beauty for Busy Mums By Sanctuary of Beauty, Desborough

H

ello all, Winter brings the crisp cold air that makes us want to feel all cosy and snug. At a time where the cold is here we turn to staying indoors, eating rich, luxurious foods and drinking. Socialising becomes a more carefully organised activity. Time will pass as that’s physical but the moment we embrace is reality. If your moments seem to be a continuous circle of the same why not book yourself in for one of our winter packages to get your inner peace back. Facing reality will not seem too much of a hindrance but more of an embraced moment that will last as long as you decide. If your peace is being inside the comfort of your own home, please try these tips to keep yourself looking and feeling radiant:

Exfoliate your body and face to take away dead skin cells that leave the skin looking dull. Exfoliate in a circular motion with a fine hymilain salt, rub into the skin then wash away • Make sure you then moisturise the skin to replenish the oils. This is a must twice a day as the cold weather can take its toll on our skin. • When leaving the house make sure you wrap up warm as tension nodules appear when we are fighting to stay warm. Our bodies tense up as a reaction so just relax and embrace it or just add more layers. I would like to wish you all a warm and snug Christmas and hope that Santa brings all of your desires along with a beautiful New Year. With love
