We’ve done the research to once again bring you the ‘Christmas What’s On’ Guide - get those diaries out and start planning your festive period right away! As well as all the Santa’s grottos there are so many fantastic shows on this Winter for the whole family to enjoy. There’s also a Christmas cooking recipe to enjoy with your children, courtesy of Crafty Cooks. This issue doesn’t just cover Christmas though of course but runs right through to the end of February. Many classes offer a free trial session so you can try a few out to see what you like. Our Time for Mum section is bigger than ever this issue. Baby & Toddler Show to return in the Spring

ollowing the success of their first Baby and Toddler Show, which took place on the 20th October at The Best Western Hotel, Corby, Holmes Play have decided to do it all again on Sunday 2nd March 2014! Up to 30 local exhibitors will be providing a wide range of products and services across the whole baby and toddler market. The aim of the event is to offer visitors a unique and enlightening shopping experience, alongside a fun and informative programme of activities - all at a low cost to attend. The show will include demonstrations, competitions and opportunities for parents, expectant mothers and families to get involved and talk to exhibitors about their products. Many exhibitors will also be offering a special Baby & Toddler Show discount. Pantomime Turns 3D!

he Royal & Derngate’s 2013 Christmas pantomime, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, not only features a star cast, including Linda Lusardi and Sam Kane, but also sees the introduction of special 3D effects! Audiences will be given a pair of 3D glasses on entry to the theatre and will be asked to put them on at certain points in the show. “A talented team of designers and animators have put together brand-new, stunning 3D sequences including a fabulous 3D forest which surrounds the castle where Sleeping Beauty falls into slumber” explains Jon Conway, Executive Producer. We were lucky enough to get a sneak preview of this particular clip at the Press Launch for the pantomime and can confirm it is truly stunning! We took 3 of our own little princesses along to the Press Launch (you may have spotted them on the front cover!) and they too seemed suitably impressed by the video! But then everything about the Press Launch impressed them - from the thoughtfully made picnic prepared for them by the theatre to the goody bag given to them after the photo shoot; and not least, meeting a real princess Sleeping Beauty! Thank-you Royal & Derngate for making our princesses feel so welcome!

A Picture Paints a Thousand Words

The extraordinary talent of Iris Grace

rom a photograph, you wouldn’t think that anything was different about beautiful Iris Grace, age 4, from Market Harborough, but there is, Iris is autistic. She doesn’t talk and has great difficulty interacting with others. Iris’ Mum, Arabella, takes up the story: “Since she was diagnosed in 2011, we were able to learn about how we could help our daughter. With the expert help of many therapists she changed dramatically in just a short space of time. She used to be consumed by books, eye contact was a rare occurrence, she didn’t want to or know how to play with us, showed obsessive behaviours, got desperately distressed when we took her near any other children, and her sleep patterns were all over the place. She now rides on my back in fits of laughter, squealing with delight, plays, communicates by creating her own signs and her sleeping is much better. We still have a long way to go with her social skills and speech, but we are having many more ‘good days’ and one of her favourite activities is painting.” “We have been encouraging Iris to paint to help with speech therapy, joint attention and turn taking. Then we realised that she is actually really talented and has an incredible concentration span of around 2 hours on each piece. I make up some cups of very watery paints, she chooses which one she would like to use and gets me to make more when she needs it. Her autism has created a style of painting which I have never seen in a child of her age, she has an understanding of colours and how they interact with each other. She beams with excitement and joy when I get the paints out, it lifts her mood every time. She has found a way of expressing herself that is so beautiful, so we wanted to share it and thereby raise awareness of her condition, which is currently affecting around 100,000 children in the UK and these numbers are rising.” These wonderful paintings are now being sold and her art is being displayed in a local gallery. One particular piece, ‘Patience’ was donated to the Special Yoga Art Auction in London on 15th May, and raised a fantastic £830! “We wanted to share her art to raise awareness of her condition and inspire other families in similar situations to ours. I am so proud of Iris for raising this amount for charity, it’s just amazing.” says Arabella. All profits from the sales of Iris’ paintings, contribute towards more art materials and her on going private therapists. at Greentrunks Garden Centre

y son Jake (5) and I went to visit Greentrunks Garden Centre in early November - we had planned on visiting as a family but Maisy (2) had chicken pox! Greentrunks is situated in Great Cransley, near Kettering. It’s a Garden Centre with a gift shop and tearoom but has the added attractions of ‘Bugtopia’ and a new feature for 2013: the ‘Nocturnal House’. We booked to visit both attractions and were given an allocated time for each.

Nocturnal House

We started with the Nocturnal House. You go into a dark room (as you might expect!) but with a little boy who doesn’t like the dark this seemed like a no go area for us! My son was anxious and didn’t want to enter however with a little reassurance and guidance the Keepers made him feel comfortable. Being given a really cool torch certainly helped! Armed with our UV torches the Keepers, Ashley and trainee Shannon, began to show us the animals. They were very informative telling us lots of interesting facts along the way making it both fun and educational. I saw animals I had never heard of - such as a Sugar Glider. They are well worth a look! Not only are they cute, they make the strangest noise you have ever heard - very unexpected coming from such a little thing. We also looked at Scorpions, shining our UV light on them giving them a bright green appearance, and held an African Pygmy Hedgehog, again glowing under the UV light that Jake was shining on him. This little fella kept seeking warmth inside my coat. I don’t usually handle animals - I don’t have any pets - so I was surprised how comfortable I felt. This was most definitely down to feeling in safe hands with

the Keepers. Jake didn’t want to hold anything but was happy stroking the hedgehog; or Prickly Pants as we called him for any Toy Story fans! There were also frogs, rats, cockroaches and many more in the Nocturnal House.

Bugtopia

From the Nocturnal House we went on to the Bugtopia. A tropical-feeling, well lit room with lots of benches all the way round so you could fit quite a big group in there. The Bugtopia was run by a different Keeper, who was equally friendly, fun and informative giving you a chance to handle the animals (if you wanted to) and telling you many interesting facts about each one. l learned lots of great information; for example, did you know that cockroaches can survive with no head for 14 days?!! (Shhhhh. Don’t tell them I told you, you can act really clever when you visit!) We got a chance to hold Stick Insects, chameleons, spiders, snakes, cockroaches and so much more. Jake didn’t want to hold anything so I decided I had to be brave and show him there was absolutely nothing to be scared of. I shocked myself! I got stuck in and held everything! It worked as before I knew it Jake was handling a small snake, a huge achievement by someone who usually shys away. The whole experience was a great confidence booster for both of us and we even have the certificates to prove it: “Official Bugtopia Handler – Braving the Bugs”. My husband and Maisy couldn’t believe the photo when we got home of me holding a huge spider and smiling at the same time! This was unexpected for everyone and I can only put that down to the great staff at Greentrunks.

Tearoom

After our Nocturnal House and Bugtopia experiences we ventured into the tearoom such a lovely space, very warm and welcoming. There was a wide menu offering meals and snacks, drinks and yummy cakes. They had lots of children’s toys and also an area in the reception for the children to do some colouring and make masks etc. It’s definitely equipped for families and has something for everyone.

Special Activities & Events

Greentrunks run various special events and activity sessions, such as Jungle Tots mid week in term time - a Bugtopia session tailored specifically for pre-schoolers. New in 2013, is the ‘Keeper Day’ activity. This is a bookable activity which gives you the opportunity to work with the Keepers for a day helping to take care of the animals and accessing areas that are usually off limits. We didn’t book this activity but managed to peak in on a session while we were there. We witnessed foxes being fed and a Racoon giving a kiss on request! How cute is that! ll in all we had a fantastic day out at Greentrunks and surprised ourselves at just how much we enjoyed it. To anyone who thinks ‘No way I couldn’t do that’, go along and have a go. I never dreamed I would have a snake round my neck or hold a cockroach. I will definitely visit again - not least to see how brave my husband is! And what Maisy makes of it all. They do a loyalty card so I plan to start collecting the stamps. Talking to Joe and Natalie (Managers and Owners) and all the staff they are so passionate about the place and the animals and it really shows. Just amazing! A resounding 10/10 from us! Still time to make Christmas magical with an NSPCC Letter from Santa

here’s still time for people in Northamptonshire to make Christmas extra special this year by ordering a personalised Letter from Santa for a child, and at the same time raise vital funds for the NSPCC. For a suggested donation of £5 to the charity, a child will receive a fun, colourful and personalised Letter from Santa, arriving via ‘Rudolph Mail’. The Letters feature a festive story tailored to their age and you can choose from seven different beautifully illustrated styles. Santa can even write a special poem to celebrate baby’s first Christmas – a keepsake to treasure for years to come. Each letter includes the child’s name, age, gender, best friend or family member’s name, favourite activity and achievements, as well as a special ‘PS’ option when you request your letter online. You can also choose whether the letter is signed by ‘Santa’ or ‘Father Christmas’. Last year, 21,158 children in the East Midlands received a Letter from Santa. By requesting a Letter from Santa, not only will you make Christmas even more magical for a child but you’re helping the NSPCC to be there for vulnerable children, right here in Northamptonshire and across the UK” Every £5 raised by Letter from Santa will help ChildLine be there for a child in danger or distress, either online or over the phone. Every £12 raised could help us talk to one primary school child about abuse and give them the confidence to talk to a trusted adult. And every £50 could help an NSPCC practitioner deliver two hours telephone support to anyone with concerns about a child. About the Classes Futsal is played indoors with either a size 2, 3 or 4 ball depending on age. Whilst the focus is on fun, team work and interaction, our format influences some spectacular match situations and brings out remarkable creativity in young participants. All players from aged 2 through to adults, boys and girls, are encouraged to attend the Futsal Centres to improve their skills. We teach individual ball skill, technique and agility for all abilities in a fun environment with different exercises and drills. We run all-year-round weekly programs and also half-term boot camps. All our coaches are fully CRB checked.

How do the classes benefit children?

They teach children well being, team work and making friends at an early age. They also give children more confidence.

Christmas at Kelmarsh Hall

Saturday 30th November & Sunday 1st December Christmas at Kelmarsh makes a return this year, with highlights including a luxury food market, children’s festive storytelling and the chance to meet Father Christmas. The two-day event will also include free children’s Christmas decoration workshops, wreath-making and cooking demonstrations and bespoke Christmas gifts. Christmas trees will be on sale and

hot refreshments will be available, with a number of local choirs and hand bell ringers providing some festive song. Admission is £5 per person (free for under-fives), with an additional charge of £5 for children who would like to visit Father Christmas. Opening hours are 10am to 5pm on both days. Saturday 30th November to Monday 23rd December The countdown to Christmas has begun at Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre where Father Christmas will arrive in style on November 30th. The famous figure, described by past customers as “The best Father Christmas ever!” will arrive by horse and cart at 11am and will travel down to the 18th Century Mill House where he will set up for the festive period. Marketing and Communications Officer at the Farm, Megan Horner, said: “We are very proud of the traditional and festive atmosphere we create with our Father Christmas event. He sets himself up in front of the roaring fire and talks to each child individually. It’s certainly very difficult to not feel festive at Sacrewell in December!” Father Christmas will be at the Farm every weekend from November 30th and daily from December 14th to the 23rd. Elsewhere on the Farm there will be a living Nativity set up in the Animal Village where you can see the stable set up surrounded by animals. irstly many congratulations if you or someone you know is pregnant! Whether it’s a first or subsequent baby, it’s such an exciting time for Mums-to-be, Dads, friends and family. We know that many hormonal, postural and mental changes occur when we are pregnant and it is well documented that massage, in general and in pregnancy, is proven to be a natural pain reliever, stress reducer and muscle relaxant. This article will explain a little more about massage in pregnancy and what you can expect...

What can massage in pregnancy do for you? • • • • •

Relieve aches and pains Relieve sciatica and lower back aches Help with cramp Help with insomnia Release muscular tension in upper back shoulders • Help Mum-to-be relax • Aid pain and discomfort from movement in pelvic bones (Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction)

What happens during massage? Pregnancy massage is usually conducted while the client lays on the couch, one side at a time. Cushions, pillows, sheets or towels are used to ensure the client is as comfortable possible. The back, legs, arms and feet are all gently massaged during the course of the session. The client can choose if she wants the abdomen gently massaged or not, it is personal preference. Research does show that the feel good endorphins are passed to baby during massage and it is perfectly safe to do so. A short period on the back is usually spent to massage the shoulders and face. A full body massage lasts between 50 and 60 minutes.

Finding a therapist When you look for a massage therapist in pregnancy you need to ensure the therapist you choose is specifically trained and qualified as a Pregnancy and Abdominal Massage Practitioner. Belonging to an accredited governing body such as the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT), BABTAC or CThA, also ensures therapists have met certain standards and follow codes of ethics. Remember – Pregnancy practitioners are there as a complementary therapy to your normal maternity care. Most doctors, midwives and health professionals support massage where it is safe for you and baby.

When to have a massage Wait until you are a minimum of 12 weeks to start. Massage can then be undertaken right up to and including very early stages of labour if you and your midwife are happy.

Before you attend a massage session Every pregnancy and everyone is different, so just check with your GP or Midwife that its ok for you to have a massage before you attend. Most people are absolutely fine to have a massage; however like all things in life there are just a few exceptions as to why someone may not be able to have a massage, things like diabetes or known pre-eclampsia for example. A professional pregnancy massage therapist will always undertake a full written consultation with you before a massage and make notes in any case. They may even give you a consent form to ask your doctor or midwife to sign to say they agree a massage is ok for you. Hopefully this information has reassured you of the benefits and safety of massage in pregnancy. Just contact your chosen therapist if you’d like any further information.
