A new concept for Corby make money whilst you shop!
Most of us are under increased financial pressure and even for those who aren’t, we all love a bargain. So justify your spending by cashing in on the clothing you no longer need. You don’t have to waste your time trying to sell or give away the items on internet sites. All you have to do is make an appointment to bring your clothes into the shop and if we’re able to stock them and they sell within the 8 weeks you’ll receive 40 per cent of the value in cash or 50 per cent in credit to spend in the shop.
With many low budget shops/brands now selling clothing at rock bottom prices, you sometimes feel you have no alternative but to use them. The problem with these brands being the quality is very poor. You buy expecting the item to last a couple of weeks/months. Why should you have to compromise though, all of our items are carefully selected and are in excellent condition, with all the inherent benefits of the brands you trust and love.
Whilst you’re there have a browse around the boutique for any bargains. Many people are put off by the term used clothing and the very words conjure up all sorts of images. You will be pleasantly surprised when you visit our shop, we are setting a standard.
Visit us at 73 High Street, Corby or telephone 07718 925775 to make an appointment to sell some items.

Anyone for a Game of Rounders? Actually not just a game but a whole season of rounders on Thursday evenings from May through to the end of August. The local ladies rounders league are looking for more players and teams to join the league next year. I joined the league with a team we scrambled together last season and we had a fantastic time! We lost every game (apart from one which we drew!) but every member of the team enjoyed it nonetheless. Getting out in the fresh air, getting some exercise, making new friends and especially the camaraderie between team mates and the post match beverage! Every team plays each other twice during the season, home and away. Teams come from all over this part of the county - Kettering, Wellingborough, Thrapston and Mawlsey. Whether you’re an individual looking to join an existing team (many of whom are always on the lookout for extra players) or are already in a group and want to register your own team, the league organisers would love to hear from you! Contact Clare on 07976 828032 or email clare.wallace73@gmail.com or karengarton@yahoo.co.uk. All abilities welcome!

ow many times have you cleared out your child’s wardrobe only to end up surrounded by items of outgrown, rarely worn and often expensive clothes? It’s great if you know someone you can pass them onto and know they’ll get worn but that’s not always the case. And it’s not just the money you’ve spent on clothes for the children that can leave you tearing your hair out either. Take a fresh look at your own wardrobe and ask yourself: • How many dresses have you worn once and won’t wear again? • How many of those ‘I’ll fit into that again one day’ items do you have (which have been there for some time)? • How many impulse buys are still hanging up unworn, perhaps still with the tag on but which you can no longer return? Put your hands up if you have answered yes to one or all of the above - we think that’s most of us then! Not quite so bad though if, following your clear out, you may be able to recoup some of the costs and put it towards some new clothes? This is where Corby’s latest fashion venture, Back on the Rack, can help. A new, gently used clothing boutique selling ladieswear and childrenswear, it’s the answer to your prayers. You don’t have to waste your time trying to sell or give away your clothing on internet sites. All you have to do is make an appointment to bring your clothes into the shop and if we’re able to stock them and they sell within the 8 weeks you’ll receive 40 per cent of the value in cash or 50 per cent in credit to spend in the shop. Whilst you’re there you can have a browse through the bargains for yourself and the kids, picking up great brands for a fraction of the original price! Visit back on the rack at 73 High Street, Corby now or call 07718 925775 to make an appointment to sell your items.

The Centre at Mawsley: The Perfect Party Venue
I
was recently invited to The Centre at Mawsley to take a look around the facilities. I’d visited before but never realised how big it is and just how much it has to offer. If you’re looking for a venue for your child’s birthday party or any sort of party/occasion then you’ll struggle to find anywhere as perfect as The Centre at Mawsley, here’s why...
Editor’s Review
Choice of rooms
There’s not just 1 but 3 different rooms to choose from for your party. For big parties, where you have a lot of people attending or you need plenty of space for activities, there’s the main hall. It’s big enough to cater for wedding receptions for up to 160 people so can easily house a bouncy castle and all sorts of children’s play equipment or entertainment. For smaller more intimate gatherings, up to a maximum of 25 people, there’s a choice of 2 other rooms available for hire. The Centre also has it’s own fully licensed public bar and lounge with a covered patio area, Sky TV and pool table. The lounge and bar are not available for private hire but are open daily from noon until close and always open while a party is on for guests to purchase beverages (including tea, coffee, squash as well as premium alcoholic beverages). The main hall has it’s own bar, so guests can order drinks directly from there without leaving the party, and for weddings they even offer a table service.
The Centre has lots of other useful equipment available for use/to hire should you require it, including a stage, microphone, speakers, and a projector. It also has wi-fi throughout which is free of charge to use.
Outdoor play area/Playing Fields
Right next to The Centre, adjacent to the patio, is a wonderful outdoor play area which children are welcome to use. There are also nearly 10 acres of playing fields - perfect for ball games or a stroll.
Catering
The Centre uses an external caterer for its events who comes highly recommended. They can prepare anything from a finger buffet to a 4 course meal. Alternatively you can bring your own food if you wish and there is a kitchen which is also available for hire.
Other information
There is a large car park with space for 100 cars. Baby changing facilities are available in the disabled toilet.
Hire costs
Equipment
The main hall is equipped with an amazing light system that includes mood lighting and lasers of all different colours. It has 7 pre-set programs to choose from and can even be set to move to the music! It is guaranteed to keep children amused for a long time and is perfect if you’re planning a disco or wedding with a particular colour scheme. For more formal occasions, such as a wedding or christening, The Centre has a full size, indoor marquee available for hire that fits inside the main hall, transforming the room into a truly stunning venue. The use of tables and chairs is included in the room hire. They have a gorgeous set of colourful little chairs perfect for children’s parties.
The main hall is usually only £19 per hour to hire and either of the 2 smaller rooms £7.50 per hour. As an added bonus though The Centre is offering all Time for Tots readers a fantastic 50% off room hire charges for all bookings paid for before the 31st December 2011. See voucher in our “Special Offers” section for more information.
Public Events
The Centre hosts many public events open to villagers and non-villagers. Details of forthcoming events and how to book can be found on their website.co

Baby yoga incorporates infant massage, offers quality physical stimulation including flowing postures, holding, movement, touch, voice and deep relaxation. It induces a happy, care-free and lively parent-infant interaction which develops as the babies grow. What is the aim of the classes? Baby yoga is a wonderfully relaxing experience, giving babies and parents a chance to enjoy a soothing and quiet atmosphere, without the worries of everyday life. Talk us through a typical class: Classes start with a welcome song and a short chat with all the parents and babies. We then do some massage to warm up, and some basic hip sequences. This is followed with some tummy time, walking exercises and singing. Some weeks we have basic stretches for Mum/Dad, finishing with a relaxation session for parent and child together. Parents are welcome to leave their baby in the care of the teacher so that they are able to fully relax if they wish to.

It also helps the parents to relax and enjoy some time with baby without the distractions of the outside world. What ages are the classes for? For babies from 0 weeks to crawling. Stagecoach Theatre Arts Schools
Stagecoach is the first and best part-time stage school in the Country. It was started 23 years ago in Walton-on-Thames and now boasts 613 schools and 731 Early Stage Schools in the UK, USA, Germany, Malta and Gibraltar. Stagecoach Kettering has been running very successfully for eight years, with some of the students having been there from day one! The aim of the classes is to provide quality performing arts education whilst also developing confidence and creativity in a disciplined but fun environment. The Early Stage Classes are for children aged 4 to 6 years and the Main School classes are for children aged 6 to 18 years. In a typical Main School class students are split into 3 Groups: Stage 1 (6-9yrs), Stage 2 (912yrs), and Stage 3 (12-18yrs). The students all work within their own age group and are tutored by experienced professionals who are all CRB checked. Each of the 3 Disciplines (Dance, Drama and Singing) start with a warm-up and then students will either start to learn a song or dance, and in Drama they may be doing scripted work or improvisation.
Once a year we perform a presentation for family and friends in a local theatre which involves all of the main school students, lots of lovely costumes and a tremendous amount of fun! Next term (January to March 2012) the students will be working towards a presentation for their families and friends at the Masque Theatre in Barton Seagrave. As well as the annual presentation, reports are given twice a year. Classes are held every Saturday during termtime (no break) at Brambleside School, Cleveland Avenue, Kettering, NN16 9JG The Early Stage Classes are one and a half hours and the Main School classes are three hours. Stagecoach also offers tuition in LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) preparing students for exams in either Verse/Prose or Acting Monologues/Duologues. Several of our students have been busy preparing for their LAMDA exams this December. Festive Fun for the Whole Family... Christmas 2011 What’s On Guide The Christmas Experience at West Lodge Rural Centre
Be transported to a magical Winter Wonderland at West Lodge Rural Centre this Christmas. Father Christmas is looking forward to receiving your Christmas wish lists and will give you a little gift to tide you over until the big day. The grotto is really special with lots to look at, Father Christmas spends plenty of time talking to the children about his very important job and the magic that happens on Christmas Eve. The very popular Nativity Play returns with Mary, Joseph, angels, kings etc being hand picked from the audience. They encourage lots of audience participation with Jingle Bells and traditional carols. The Winter Wonderland walk through takes you on a journey through the reindeer stable block and the elves village and toy shop. You can decorate a snowman and make a Christmas Card whilst you wait to see Father Christmas. All of the activities take place under cover with some heated areas to keep warm. Father Christmas - a Brief History...
T
hese days most pictures show Father Christmas with a huge sack of toys and presents slung over one shoulder, but many years ago he was not associated with gift-giving or particularly with children. The jolly chap we know and love today has emerged from many different characters. Here are just a few in chronological order: 500 AD: Saxons create Father Time (also known as King Frost or King Winter). A man from each village dresses up as Father Time and visits each home where he is offered refreshments in the hope that generosity would be rewarded with a mild winter and fruitful spring. 793 AD: Vikings invade Britain and bring their own winter traditions. The last two weeks of December are known as Jultid and the character of Jul visits the earth. A portly, elderly man with a white beard, Jul wears a long, blue, hooded cloak and travels the world on an eight-legged horse delivering gifts to the good and punishments to the bad. 1066: The Normans arrive with their story of St Nicholas (a saint from the 4th century who used to leave secret gifts for people) and the creation of the British Father Christmas is complete. 1644: Puritans ban Christmas and Father Christmas too. Bah humbug! 1837: The Victorians bring him back as a representative of good cheer and Christmas spirit. The early Victorian Father Christmas is an old man with a white beard who wears a long, fur-trimmed hooded robe, usually green. He rides a white horse and carries a yule log or a staff decorated with holly and ivy, and a wassailing bowl (a timber vessel for hot punch). Today: By the middle of the 20th century, our Father Christmas has changed again. He has been ‘Americanised’ by the illustrated 1822 poem “The Night before Christmas” and by the Coca Cola Company. Who knows how he’ll look after a few more hundred years? The rosy-cheeked chubby chap may have to swop his pies for rudolf’s carrots if he’s going to slip into a shimmering cat suit before stepping into his spacecraft...
“If you could give Father Christmas a present, what would it be?” ‘A new sleigh.‛ Luke, 5
‘A big blue car.‛ Connor, 3
‘Some pig slippers like mine (but in a bigger size)‛ Isabel, 4
‘A wand because it‛s the only thing he‛s not got, trust me.‛ Gracie, 4
A Father Christmas teddy that ACTUALLY looks like him.‛ Polly, 5.

Moving with the times... Firetree Photography introduce their new
O
Digital Blossom Album
ur children’s growth is amazingly rapid, blink and your little angel has changed again! At Firetree Photography we have for a long time offered a stress-free home visit service so families can capture these brief moments and have many options for showcasing your family portraits. With the growth in popularity of social media sites like Facebook we now have a new range of packages that allow for digital image purchase and we are showcasing a new state-of-the-art Digital Blossom Album. Purchasing digital media from a professional portrait session is usually very expensive but at Firetree Photography as well as offering images for web viewing, we have a new Digital Album that allows you to share the photographs from your photography shoot by e-mail or social media sites like Facebook. This unique Digital Album is offered as part of a two or three sitting package and actually grows with your sittings. After your first sitting you select a few of your favourite images and a link to your Digital Album is e-mailed to you. You can then share the album with friends and family online. Your album grows after subsequent sittings to become a beautifully crafted twenty page album. You can even contribute your own images, baby’s first photographs for example, or first solid feed! If you are not a fan of social media, you can simply have your images e-mailed to you in a slideshow format to display on your personal laptop, home computer or digital frame. At the end of your sitting package you are sent the final link to your album and are presented with a hard back, pro-bound Photography Book. A contemporary way to share the growth of your family with relatives and friends, as For more information about our Digital Blossom well as having the final photography book as Album, our Christmas offer and other products a perfect keepsake for years to come. please visit our website: www.firetreephoto.co.uk. Aka Millie Binks, winner of The Lighthouse Theatre’s ‘Search for Cinderella’ competition
ille Binks, 17, an A-level student from Kettering won the battle to the ball in the Lighthouse Theatre’s ‘Search for Cinders’ competition earlier this year. Millie saw off competition from over 70 other girls, many experienced performers, to win her dream role. The theatre put the entrants through a vigorous series of auditions to whittle it down to a final 5 before handing the final decision over to the public vote. Millie received over 40% of the vote, which raised nearly £4,000 for charity. Millie will play the title role at the Lighthouse alongside Christine and Neil Hamilton and her Prince Charming, Danny Young. We had the immense pleasure of catching up with the delightful Millie at the recent press day for the production.. Congratulations on winning the competition Millie! How did you feel when you were told the news? Thank-you. I couldn’t believe it when I heard I’d won. I was thrilled! It was actually Christine (Hamilton) that called to tell me. Is this your biggest role to date? Yes. I’ve been in pantomimes before but only in the chorus. I also played a girl called ‘Pulchra’ in the CBBC series ‘The Roman Mysteries’ but this is definitely my biggest role so far. How did you get into performing? When I was 7 my cousins were going along to an open audition for the chorus in a local pantomime so I decided to go with them . To my amazement I was picked! I loved it and begged my Mum to let me have an agent afterwards as many of the other girls did. She said I had to do well with my maths first, my weakest subject at school. It was the motivation I needed though so I got the grades and Mum signed me up with an agency! I gather you’re studying for your A-levels at the moment. How do you manage to juggle performing with your studies? When I won the part in “The Roman Mysteries” I had to take 10 months off school whilst I was studying for my GCSEs. It wasn’t easy but I managed to do both and got good grades which got me into the Grammar School. I’ve got exams in January so I’ll have to really get my head down when the panto season finishes. Would you like a career in show business when you’ve finished all your studies? Yes I’d definitely like to continue in this line of work.
Our tots had a great time mingling with the cast and didn’t want to leave! Acting is my first love and a career in television would be my ultimate dream. I’d love to star in dramas, particularly a production of Shakespeare. Who is your idol? Ursula Andress. She was one of the first Bond Girls. Lots of people say I look like her - I wish!! We have to ask, who is your favourite princess? It has to be Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco, because of her grace and beauty and because she was an actress as well as a princess! And your favourite Disney Princess? (Given they are so popular with girls under 5!) I don’t really know many but I guess I’d have to say Cinderella! I like Pochahontas as well if she’s classed as a princess. I’m sure Danny Young is going to be fantastic as Prince Charming but if you could choose, who would be your real life Prince Charming? I should probably say my boyfriend but if you want me to say someone famous then I’d have to say Orlando Weeks. Now I feel old as I have no idea who he is! Who is he?
He’s the lead singer of The Macabees. A band from the south of England. Finally, why should our readers come and see “Cinderella” at The Lighthouse this Christmas? Cinderella is the most magical of all fairytales and this particular production has a great cast - we’re like a family already and I’m sure that will come across on stage. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting the lovely Millie, and would like to thank her for taking the time to chat to us. We wish her all the best in the forthcoming panto and can’t wait to come and see her. We’ve bought our tickets already! To purchase yours call the box office on 01536 414141 or go to www.lighthousetheatre.co.uk.
