Winter 2012 Hello and welcome to the Winter issue! The issue where we bring you the low-down on all the Christmas activities and events taking place, and what a bumper guide we have for you this year. A whole 7 pages of Christmas activities to enjoy with your children! Not to mention some great gift ideas from local crafts-people/retailers. At times of economic hardship it’s important to support local businesses so please do bear them in mind when doing your Christmas shopping. There’s also a Christmas feature on pages 30 to 31 looking at different traditions from continental Europe at Christmas time - ever heard of Knecht Ruprecht or Los 3 Reyes Magos? No? Then turn to page 30 for a very interesting read. Soul Attention Counselling Services have written another very interesting article for us on page 33 “Making Parent Guilt Work for You”. I’m sure what Rachel has written will strike a chord with many of you. If you have a question you’d like to put to Rachel for the next issue then please do send it in, either to us or directly to Rachel. If you’re looking for somewhere new to go with the children we highly recommend Greentrunks in Great Cransley. Turn to page 7 to read our full review. Whatever you do this winter we hope you have a good one and enjoy a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year with your loved ones. Until the spring.... Vanessa

New Breastfeeding Lounge in Kettering’s Newlands Centre
K
ettering’s Newlands Shopping Centre has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment of it’s customer toilets and surrounding area. The new facility will completely replace the existing provision, providing a modern clean environment, with baby changing facilities in both men’s and ladies toilets, a fully equipped disabled toilet and uniquely, a private and comfortable area in part of the existing lobby for breastfeeding. The design and furnishing of this element is being done in consultation with leading breastfeeding charity La Leche League (www.laleche.org.uk) and will be one of the first such facilities in the UK. It will include soft chairs and a play area for young children. www.newlandsshopping.co.uk. See page 44 for details of a new breatsfeeding charity in Northamptonshire.

ene Valley Dance Academy have opened their very own dedicated studio in Corby in which they run dance classes and singing lessons. Karen, Principal at Nene Valley Dance, says: “It has been 9 years in the making but I am so glad that I took the plunge as it means I can now offer more classes such as baby ballet and ballet for 4 to 6 year olds as well as other dance styles. We are in the process of trying to raise some money so that we turn four offices into two more studios”. The studio was opened by their celebrity dance patron Lizzie Gough (judge on alesha dixson Street Dance Crew, lead dancer in some like it hip hop) who also delivered a Street Dance Workshop. ing and Sign have been awarded a Gold Disc from the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) as over 25,000 copies of its Sing and Sign DVD have now been sold! As sales of the DVD have only been through Sing and Sign classes around the UK (including East Northants), it shows just how many families have been enjoying signing and music with their children. Says local Sing and Sign teacher Amanda Walker (pictured): ‘I’m very proud of this achievement and I like the thought that I and the parents who have attended my classes have played a small part in reaching ‘Gold Disc’ status!’ For details on Sing and Sign classes in East Northants, contact Amanda on 07939 092134 or email amandawalker@singandsign.co.uk.

Looking for somewhere new and exciting to visit that’s fun, novel and educational for all the family? We recommend the new Bugtopia at Greentrunks Garden Centre
A
short drive from Kettering at Great Cransley, I recently visited here with my husband and kids and can honestly say that we all got something out of this and had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Comprising a small garden centre, vintage styled tea room (with a real fire) and a farm/gift shop the main draw at Greentrunks is the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the world’s most weird and wonderful creatures in their very own Bugtopia. Owners and managers Joe and Natalie run regular sessions where all the family get the chance to handle the likes of giant stick insects, snakes, chameleons and even a bearded dragon! (No suit of armour required). They do a fantastic job of teaching the kids about the creatures, where they are from and how they have adapted to survive in their natural habitats as well as helping them overcome their fears of what are harmless and amazing critters. As parents themselves Joe and Natalie show great empathy for how children learn and interact. While currently quite a small business, Bugtopia is ever expanding and the business is thriving with both visitors to the centre and organised visits from Joe and the animals to local schools. They hope to expand the business further next spring with a Butterfly Hut and Micro Zoo housing crocodiles, meerkats, sugar gliders and many more unusual animals. After a ‘meet and greet’ session in the Bugtopia, families can enjoy a drink and tasty homemade meal or snack in the old English styled tea room, which includes a kiddie corner with toys to entertain little ones. There is also a garden centre and farm/gift shop to browse - where those who get the bug, pardon the pun, can buy kits to take away for keeping your own stick insects (try and find another pet that happily regrows a leg if it loses one!) To advertise call 0845 6439687
Greentrunks is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sundays 11am to 5pm. It is closed on Wednesdays though in school term time. The ‘meet and greet’ sessions in the Bugtopia are held at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays and daily in school holidays and 4pm weekdays in school term time. The cost is just £2.50 per participant. There is also a ‘Jungle Tots’ session, especially adapted for little ones, on Tuesdays at 11am in school term time costing just £1 per person. Greentrunks is available for children’s birthdays parties, including a meet and greet in the Bugtopia and meal in the tea room. They also host various seasonal activities and events throughout the year and on pages 21 and 24 you will find details of the Narnia themed Christmas fun they are planning! When Vanessa met Bobby (and Denise too!)...
T
Our interview with Bobby Davro and Denise Welch, stars of “Cinderella”
he greatest panto of them all, “Cinderella” opens at the Royal & Derngate on the 7th December. Starring Bobby Davro as Buttons and Denise Welch as the Fairy Godmother we had the immense pleasure of catching up with both stars at the press launch for the show back in September. Here are the highlights...
Much loved comic Bobby Davro starred in The Royal & Derngate’s 2011 panto “Aladdin”, so we started by asking him, ‘why Northampton again?’: The audiences here were terrific last year. I’ve got to know the team and I like it here. Plus Cinderella is probably my favourite pantomime. There is a lot of humour in the Buttons character but also a lot of pathos as he loves Cinderella and she ends up with the Prince. Have you seen the script? Not yet. The writers will show it to me when they’ve finished then I’ll add my spin to it. Last year I did a lot of writing for the show and I’m looking forward to doing that again. The best pantos are on 2 levels - entertaining for both children and adults. Will this panto be the same do you think? Absolutely. I think it’s very important to entertain the adults. They’re the ones that choose whether or not to come, this year and the next. How old are your children? Will they be coming to watch the show? They’re 17, 15 and 12 now and at the stage where they find their Dad embarrasing so it’s unlikely. My 12 year old might come.
Fresh from interviewing One Direction for Loose Women the day before (Denise, not us unfortunately) we had a really enjoyable chat with the lovely Denise sitting on the floor of the Derngate’s lobby - Denise had sat down to chat to my 2 year old daughter (and to pinch some of her sweets!) In between munching on sweets and hearing all about One Direction (apparently the blonde, Irish one is the flirtiest) we managed to sneak a few questions.. So who will you be playing in this panto? I’ll be playing the Fairy Godmother. I did it once before in Darlington, 5 years ago now. I’ll be playing more of a funky fairy godmother this time, more “down with the kids”. When was your last panto? 5 years ago. I have 2 children, the younger of which is only 11, and I didn’t want to spend time away from them at Christmas. I’ve come to an arrangement with the producers this time though and my son Louis (the 11 year old) will actually be starring with me in this panto when he breaks up from school. Who will Louis be playing? We’re not sure yet. He’ll only have a minor role because he’s not in it at all for the first 2 weeks. It’ll probably be based around the fact I’m his Mummy - “don’t bother me while I’m working” kind of thing. Louis is more interested in who he’ll be starring with. “Are any of the babes hot?” he asked me when I told him. Would you like Louis to follow in your footsteps with a career in acting? We don’t encourage our kids to do anything and we certainly don’t want them to become child actors. We’ve seen too many casualties there. If Louis wants to do it in the future that’s fine. Are you looking forward to working with Bobby? Yes very much. I’ve known Bobby for a few years now but never worked with him before. Finding out Bobby was going to be in the show persuaded me to do it. He’ll no doubt try to throw me off though. I’ll have to watch him!
Cinderella runs at the Royal & Derngate from Friday 7th December 2012 to Sunday 6th January 2013. Tickets, priced from £16 to £24, are already selling fast, and can be booked through the Box Office on 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk. Win a family ticket to see “Cinderella”! Shoes, Carp and Knecht Ruprecht! European Ch
At this time of year, one family’s “normal” is another’s “you do what?!” The British Christmas appears to be a with its own customs and most are resistant to even the smallest change. However, once we have flown the nes to our regular traditions are all part and parcel of a family Christmas. Here, three mums, all having grown up tell us how they have adapted and adopted to create a very special Christmas for their little ones...
MELANIE from Germany
Mum to Josie, 6, Lottie, 4, and Johannes, 1
I grew up in Germany with an English mother and a German father. I have sin my German husband and our three children. Just like my parents did with me traditions of celebrating Christmas. In Germany, the christmassy period traditionally starts on the 4th Sunday ahea families will have a wreath which is decorated with four candles, small Christm cones or holly. When I was a child, the wreath was placed in the centre of th Sunday in the run up to Christmas, one candle was lit until all four candles w I remember our family sitting down on each of these Sunday afternoons onc home made Christmas biscuits and Lebkuchen and listening to Christmas music. On 1st December, the children get an advent calendar and the countdown to Christmas Eve begins. On the eve outside the front door and hope that St Nikolaus will leave them some chocolates, maybe a little present and haven’t, Knecht Ruprecht (who travels around with St Nikolaus) will pay the naughty children a visit and may ju While we were waiting for Christmas Eve to arrive, we always visited one of the many Christmas markets wh Stollen and candied nuts, apples and chocolate covered fruits. The scent on these markets is heavenly! By Christmas Eve morning, all families will have brought in their Christmas tree, decorated it and got everything 5pm and by the time we got home, the real candles on the tree had been lit and Christkind had been and deliver I was younger, I usually was allowed to open my presents before dinner but as I got older, we usually sat down the evening as a family. For our Christmas Eve meal we usually had something with fish. Carp is a traditional Ge As I grew up with an English mother, Father Christmas would always pay me a visit with some more presents o I had a big stocking which I would hang at the end of my bed and usually I was lucky enough to find some prese Having grown up with the “best of both”, I am trying to continue this with my children. We have an advent w comes and visits them on Christmas Eve but they also hang out their stocking for Christmas Day.
MAGDA from Poland Mum to Paula, age 5
In Poland, where we are from, the most celebrated day is Christmas Eve, and like most the evening meal. We have dropped the tradition of fasting all day but we really look foods I prepare and freeze such as dumplings and pasties filled with sauerkraut and including traditional poppy seed cake. Paula takes part in some of the preparation an are prepared only this one time in the year, so we really enjoy and appreciate them! At some point, in the “organised chaos” on Christmas Eve, my husband Pawel will sne playing in her bedroom. It is always a difficult task that requires a silly explanation of “you have just missed San Then, when it gets dark and Paula, with her daddy, finds the first star in the winter skies, it’s time to sit at the with a festive table cloth and we keep one empty plate out for the “unexpected guest”. Unlike our older relativ ‘Holy Wafer’ sent over to us from our family in Poland who also send us a letter wishing us all the very best. We never spend Christmas Eve just the three of us. We always invite friends who are living in the UK without always joins us. Our house on Christmas Eve, is always full of people, who all bring gifts for Paula explaining tha for her. We exchange and unwrap all of our presents after we have eaten our Christmas supper. I play carols on hours of Christmas morning. As our little family lives in England, we want to give our daughter a bit of both traditions; so we always hang on to bed on Christmas Eve, she leaves some milk and a mince pie next to the fire. In the morning she discovers th opened her main presents the evening before, she usually finds some sweets and a small toy in her stocking. Ch of left over food. Christmas to me is about joy and fun and time spent together with all the people we love.

MARTA from Spain
Mum to twins Thomas and Oliver, age 4 This is the time of the year when we all try to make it back home. Even though for the last 12 years I have been living between the USA and Europe, I consider my home to be Madrid, Spain. This is where I was born and where my family lives. Madrid is where my childhood memories were made and this is how I remember them: The first week of December my mother used to pull all the Christmas decorations down from the attic and the very first weekend we were all busy doing the decorations and arrangements for the holidays to come. We also put together a Nativity set that every year kept getting bigger and bigger by adding one more sheep, more ducks in the river, or one more soldier to Herod’s Castle! Included in this set were 3 very special figurines. The 3 Wise Men or 3 Magic Kings or Los 3 Reyes Magos, as we call them in Spain. Their names are Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar. In my family these were very special and my friends still remember them today because instead of riding a camel, they were riding elephants! In Spain the celebration starts the night of January 5th when little kids leave a shoe in the living room so Los 3 Reyes Magos know where to place the presents the children will find the next day, very early in the morning. The children also have to leave Christmas sweets and drinks for the Kings and camels. Now, as a grown up, I understand why my father insisted that the Kings’ favorite Christmas drink was champagne! I remember being so nervous the night of January 5th that I would swear I saw the Kings walking down the hallway and was even able to hear their steps. As we got older and figured out that parents were the 3 Kings, my mother and father allowed us to help late at night placing all the presents on each shoe when the little ones were asleep. On the night of January 5th, nobody in Spain, adults included, forgets to leave a shoe out for Melchor to leave something for them. Those memories are what makes the holiday season so special for me. To carry on with this tradition and with that magic secret, and no matter where we live, make that day special for my kids.

The Perfect Start in Life: Northampton High School
A
t Northampton High Junior School, we endeavour to provide the best possible start to your daughter’s education. During these important years, our priorities are to ensure girls’ happiness, security, confidence and desire for learning. The caring, supportive atmosphere that is so immediately apparent provides young children with the assurance they need to succeed. Such an encouraging environment is dependent upon knowing each girl well, together with a successful partnership between home and school. There are considerable opportunities on offer using the School’s firstclass facilities and resources. Our goal is to provide strong academic foundations balanced by a huge range of creative, sporting and social pursuits, within and beyond the curriculum. We have a lively Toddler Group which runs every Wednesday during term time from 1.30-3pm. This provides a great transition to our Nursery where we take girls from the term they turn 3 years old. Our younger girls thoroughly enjoy ballet, gym, visits to the library and walks to our ‘wild area’ alongside an extensive programme of trips and visitors. Junior School girls at Northampton High go above and beyond what is expected of them and we believe this is due to environment, encouragement and the enrichment opportunities that we provide for them. Our next Open Day is on Friday 22 February from 9.30am - 12 noon, we hope you will come and visit us. If you would like to find out more information or receive a prospectus, please call our Registrar, Mrs Heather Berry on 01604 765765.

New Breastfeeding Charity Launches In Northamptonshire
A
new breastfeeding charity is already making progress to support, protect, promote and normalise breastfeeding in Northamptonshire. Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance (NBA) is the first dedicated organisation of its kind in the county and a number of exciting initiatives have already begun since its official launch in September 2012. Co-Chair, Northamptonshire Breastfeeding Alliance, Esther Perryman said, “We are very excited about the future as we work with relevant organisations to ensure that breastfeeding is always high on the local public health agenda. Making breastfeeding an accepted, visible and valued part of culture and community locally is our ultimate goal and even as a relatively new organisation, we are already making a lot of progress with our aims”.
NBA Fundraising and Awareness Initiatives More breast pumps for Baby Café Loan Service NBA won £300 in Opus Energy’s generous monetary gift competition after its video entry received over 240 online votes! The money will be given to the Northampton Baby Café, enabling the specialist breastfeeding support clinic to purchase additional highly efficient breast pumps to expand its free loan service. Northamptonshire’s Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme Although breastfeeding in public is protected by law, this new scheme aims to promote cafes and venues that go the extra mile to make breastfeeding mothers feel comfortable. Guidance is offered to Breastfeeding Welcome
businesses and they are also added to NBA’s online Breastfeeding Welcome directory. Targeted awareness-raising Plans to introduce NBA to organisations and professionals responsible for the care of babies and children in Northamptonshire are well underway. Children’s Centres, GP surgeries, midwives, health visitors and antenatal groups are among those being targeted. As the voice of breastfeeding mums and babies, NBA representatives are also sitting on local NHS maternity and breastfeeding strategy groups. Safeguarding breastfeeding support services Grant applications, fundraising and working with relevant organisations remains one of the main aims of NBA. In the first year, the charity hopes to secure the future of the Northampton Baby Café – a flagship specialist breastfeeding support drop-in centre and worked with health bodies to develop additional services county-wide.
