Spring 2011 We made it! I’m sure you’ll agree, battling through the wind, rain, ice and snow trying to entertain little ones indoors through the long dark months has not been a piece of cake. The time between the departure of Father Christmas and the arrival of the Easter Bunny is a tough one. But, hooray! Springtime is here at last and we’ve got a great issue of Time for Tots for you to help you celebrate. Check out pages 6 to 7 for a fantastic line up of great days out over Easter. Whether it’s bottle feeding fluffy lambs, taking a bumpy tractor ride to spot the Easter Bunny or just taking a forest stroll though a blanket of bluebells we’ve got it all here. Fun in the fresh air, pink cheeks, then home for big sleeps. Bliss. Lovely mummies can take delight and daddies get some good hints with our Mothers Day feature on pages 16 to 17. We’ve also rounded up some real cuties to tell us what they love about their mummies, with a couple of hilarious captions to keep you entertained (and no doubt a couple of us grimacing – me included!) As usual, we’ve got some great giveaways for you all on our Win Win Win page. Write in for a chance to win a family ticket to see everyone’s favourite little pink piggy, Peppa - just one of many fantastic shows and events from the Royal & Derngate this season.

Tots News New Secret Venue for Tea Time Treats
N
ew mum Lindsay Butcher has transformed a derelict garden studio into a beautiful boutique venue to host small groups and parties. Seeing a gap in the market for groups wanting private space to celebrate in style, yet without paying through the nose for the privilege, Lindsay set about creating a quirky and comfortable space that serves as a ‘home from home’ in the pretty and peaceful village of Grendon. The elegant studio hosts vintage-style tea parties, complete with fine bone china and lashings of cake, and is suitable for groups of up to ten. Weather permitting, tea can also be taken on the sunny deck or in the gorgeous garden. Lindsay offers a variety of packages to suit all budgets. ‘I want to make the studio accessible to groups of mums like myself who want to treat themselves to somewhere nice for lunch and a gossip without having to worry about their babies disturbing other customers’. The studio is equipped with a tot-friendly area with soft mats and toys. So if you are planning a business meeting, birthday celebration, hen party, baby shower or just a good get together with pals, check out the Old Garden Studio at: www.theoldgardenstudio.co.uk or call Lindsay on: 07968 222532.

Mothering Sunday 3rd April 2011
Time for Mum
A Mothering Sunday Special!
A
s we look forward to Mothering Sunday, a day when we all hope to be pampered and have a break from our normal chores, we take a look at the history of the day, how 3 mothers at different stages of motherhood will be spending it and ask several little ones ‘Why do you love your Mummy?’….
A potted history Mothering Sunday is actually a Christian Festival which dates back to Roman times when it was a day to honour the Virgin Mary. Since Roman times it has fallen on the fourth Sunday in Lent so the date is determined by the Church calendar each year. In the 16th century people made a point of visiting their ‘mother church’ on Mothering Sunday which is their nearest big church and typically the church in which they were baptised. People that did this were said to have gone ‘a mothering’. In Victorian times it was a day when domestic servants were given the day off to visit their own mothers and families. By the 1930’s Mothering Sunday celebrations had all but stopped but were revived by American and Canadian Soldiers serving abroad during the second world war. They began celebrating what they referred to as ‘Mother’s Day’ on the second Sunday in May and continue to do so to this day. The British and Irish however on reviving the festival, decided to revert to the original date of the fourth Sunday in Lent, and so it remains.
Why do you love your Mummy?
“She gives me nice cuddles” Luke, age 4
“She fluffs up my covers and makes me sock cats” Poppy, age 5
In recent times the day has become more Americanised, the date hasn’t changed but it is more commonly referred to as ‘Mother’s Day’.
First-time Mum
Louise
Mum to Joshua, 10 months This year will be my very first Mother’s Day (as a Mum) so I’m really looking forward to it. I have no idea what we will be doing so am looking forward to a surprise on the day. I’m hoping the day will start with a lie in followed by breakfast in bed if I’m lucky! Growing up I remember pampering my Mum, cooking her meals, bringing her cups of tea, and generally making her feel appreciated and special so I’m hoping for a similar day myself. As Joshua is too young to have a clue what is going on this will of course be down to my partner. Gift wise, flowers or chocolates would be nice or a beauty treatment would be lovely. I look forward to the day when Joshua makes his own card and picks his own gift to make it really special.

17 Sundays now. On previous years my day has begun with a cooked breakfast in bed – and I’m hoping this year will be no exception! The children usually bring me the hand-made cards and gifts they’ve made at school and nursery with breakfast, although more often than not I’ve already had a sneak preview as the children are far too excited to keep them secret when they bring them home! Giving me the things they’ve made is definitely one of the highlights of the day for them and me – the delight on their faces and my daughter Beth jumping up and down on the spot in excitement is priceless. We like to go to church on Mothering Sunday, although whether we’re able to get up and out of the house on time with 3 children this year remains to be seen. The Mothering Sunday service is extra special with the children handing out posies to all the mothers in the congregation. After Church we usually enjoy a family meal somewhere. This could be cooked by my husband at home (he enjoys cooking and luckily for me is very good at it) or last year we went out to a restaurant with my Mum and mother-in-law. My husband will undoubtedly plan something special for us, although probably not until the day before knowing him! He usually “comes good” with his plans though so I’m confident he will this year too. Whatever we do the emphasis will be on enjoying family time together and hopefully on me not lifting a finger! I will of course catch up with my Mum at some point throughout the day to thank her for all she does for me. In previous years my parents have joined us for church and a meal so may well do this year (depending on what offers they get from my siblings!)

Grandmother
Mother of 3, grandmother of 4 Almost 60 years ago when I was a little child I remember going to Sunday School on Mothering Sunday and each child was given a daffodil with tinfoil wrapped around the bottom half of the stem to give to their Mum when they got home. To me it seemed the most beautiful thing in the world, it was as good as a whole bouquet of flowers and I couldn’t wait to give it to my Mum, I ran all the way home. Mothering Sunday was always a time to thank my Mum for all she did for me and in time to enjoy being on the “receiving end” as I became a Mum and my three children gave me the lovely cards that they had made at school plus flowers or chocolates. As with most things Mothering Sunday has become more commercialised with shop bought cards and presents. Years ago the card and present were usually made by the child and the value of the gift was in the effort that went into making it. The sentiment has remained largely unchanged though. My children have all flown the nest now living busy lives of their own but with 2 new grandchildren this year I’m hoping to spend it surrounded by family, having a lovely Sunday lunch and not being the one clearing away and washing up at the end of it!
Wishing all mothers a peaceful and relaxing Mothering Sunday!

“She gives me cuddles and takes me out to places” Nicholas, age 5

A Dad’s Day Out Getting creative, feeling calm and relaxing with a coffee... ...at Roobarb & Kustard When I was asked to take my two daughters, Izzy (3) and Mia (11), to Roobarb and Kustard and write about my visit, I thought I was in for a crazy and hectic Saturday morning. I was told we would be painting pottery. This conjured up images of smashed plates and splattered paint. My anxieties were put to rest the moment we walked in. The first thing I noticed was the calm and concentration amongst all of the children there, along with the smell of fresh coffee. We were greeted on arrival and shown to a table that was kitted out with a whole array of paints, brushes and everything else needed to create a masterpiece. Once settled we were shown all the pottery that we could choose from to paint. Izzy chose a shoe, Mia chose a plate and I chose a large bowl of coffee to drink. It was to be a great Saturday. While the girls got stuck into their painting I spoke to Kylie, who owns Roobarb and Kustard. She started up three years ago after having her second baby, giving up her job as a project manager. She caters for all of the usual parties for children between the ages of 4 up to around 12 but also, what I thought was a great idea, is that she does adult chill out evenings and team building sessions (booking required) where you can come along with your own wine and relax, chat and do some painting, good for starting off your hen night perhaps. There are all sorts of things you can do here, there is a large variety of pottery to choose from to paint, there is also hand and footprint plates, clay imprints, 3D plaster impressions, christening and birth plates signing plates and commission pieces. Each person wishing to paint is charged a studio fee of £3.95 then the price of the piece or pieces on top, which start from £3.65. These are then left for a week to be glazed and fired before they are ready to collect. Izzy and Mia are now getting hungry. This was thanks to the family next to us, who were here using the voucher their daughter got for her birthday, having
some delicious looking sandwiches brought to their table. They chose their sandwiches which were freshly made for them and a drink which they demolished while adding the finishing touches to their pottery which was to be for mum on Mother’s Day. The sandwiches start at £2.65. There’s also a good variety of fresh coffees and hot chocolates along with handmade cakes, crisps and drinks. I asked Izzy if she had enjoyed herself, her response was ‘Yes. Can we come again tomorrow please?’ All three of us had a lovely time in a wonderful and unique place. We will definitely go again. Finding Roobarb & Kustard This tranquil spot is unbelievably bang in the centre of town. Turn off Abington Street and walk down the side of M&S and you fill find it tucked away half way up Wellington Street. They have baby changing facilities and disabled access, so accessible for all, and there is a car park next door. Opening hours: Mon: closed Tues to Sat: 10am to 5pm Sun: Open for pre-booked birthday parties Thur: 7pm to 9.30pm adult “chill out” painting (pre booking only with a min of 10 painters). Time for Books: Waterstones Book Review
Waterstones have selected four fantastic books for our reader panel to review this issue - all of which have proved a big hit! As usual, a big thank you to all our reviewers.
For Babies... Snuggle Bunny
Lambert & Goldhawk £9.99 A hardback book with a soft glove puppet attached. You stick your hand in and move it about, and then, as if by magic, Snuggle Bunny comes to life. As you follow the rather charming bed-time story, he becomes a VERY sleepy rabbit indeed. Our parent said: “My baby and I absolutely loved this book! So much so we’ve been out to buy it! The delightful rhyming bedtime story combined with a cute, soft, glove puppet to bring the story to life make it a firm favourite. I was worried the puppet would be too stimulating at bedtime but not at all. The story is just the right length for a baby’s bedtime story.” Rating: 5/5 Joanne, Mum to Chloe, age 10 months
For Pre-schoolers... Mr Wolf’s Pancakes Author Jan Fearnley £7.99
Mr Wolf fancies some tasty pancakes but he doesn’t know how to make them. Asking his neighbours is no use - they’re a mean and horrible lot who refuse to help. Poor Mr Wolf. He has to work it out, all by himself. So what happens when these nasty neighbours want to help Mr Wolf eat his delicious pancakes..? Our parent said: “This is a twist on the classic “The Little Red Hen” book I remember from my childhood - but with a slightly different outcome! Definitely a hit with my 4 year old son who has asked for this particular book every night since!” Rating: 5/5 Sarah, Mum to Oliver, age 4
For Toddlers... Lizzy The Lamb Campbell Books (Illustrated by Axel Scheffler)
£6.99
This charming board book from award-winning illustrator Axel Scheffler is now available in a jigsaw book format. Children will love reading about Lizzy the Lamb, who enjoys skipping, playing with the geese and most of all, jumping as high as she can! Bright illustrations, rhyming text, five fantastic four-piece jigsaws and a fun activity on the final spread will make this a storytime and playtime favourite. Our parent said: “My son thought this book was a real bedtime treat as it’s a story and puzzle in one. He asked me where the Gruffalo was so he is obviously familiar with the illustrator! It is short and sweet with good rhyming words and I found it a really relaxing way to settle my boy down at the end of the day. It’s nice to interact with a few (easy) jigsaws at bedtime! Will read this one again.” Rating: 4/5 Greg, Dad to Freddie, age 2
This Season’s Choice The Odd Egg
Author Emily Gravett £5.99 When Duck finds an egg of his own he’s delighted: it’s the most beautiful egg in the world! But all the other birds think it’s a very odd egg indeed and everyone’s in for a BIG surprise when the egg hatches. Children and adults alike will love the witty outcome and Emily Gravett’s playful watercolour and pencil illustrations. Our parent said: “My 2 (nearly 3) year old and I LOVED this book. The illustrations are really beautiful, the suspense builds quickly - hard work when little fingers want to flick the pages before you’ve read them – and the outcome is brilliant. The big surprise at the end caused wide eyes followed by fits of giggles. I would recommend this book for all ages. A real gem.” Rating 5/5 Viki, Mum to Olivia, age 2

Worried that your child could be dyslexic?
Polka Dot/Thinkstock
FREE sitting when you quote ‘Time for Tots’
Affecting around 8% of the UK population, dyslexia is a permanent disability which requires continuous support, particularly for a child. In many children, dyslexia causes difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, memory and the sequencing processes of basic maths and can dramatically affect their education and school experience. Northampton Optician Asif Mohammed, from Greens Kodak Lens Vision Centre, is urging parents to book a child’s dyslexia screening test to assist in the diagnosis of the disability. Mr Mohammed said: “Dyslexia, if not diagnosed early, can have a dramatic effect on a child’s life. There are now many ways in which we can help and through our dyslexia screening service we’re changing lives, providing children with the tools they need to tackle their education head-on.” With specialist support, most people with dyslexia can learn to read and write perfectly well. Many dyslexics are sensitive to light or certain colours and so the screening tests can determine if tinted lenses or coloured overlays will make reading and writing easier for your child. The dyslexia screening test costs £20 when booked with a child’s FREE eye test. To find out more or to book an appointment, contact the Kodak Lens Vision Centre on 01604 715721 or call in at 18, Harborough Road, Kingsthorpe.

Greetings to a great cause!
The idea for Cards from Africa came to British founder, Chris Page, in 2004, inspired by a Kenyan doctor who had started a similar endeavor to generate income for women in a Nairobian slum. Chris teamed up with Rwandan artist Gabriel Dusabe and together they learned how to make paper and create simple card prototypes. Their first employee was a young orphaned woman named Ariette. After one month’s time they asked her to bring another friend to train but she brought two! Shortly after, twenty more orphaned youths were trained and the business was born. Profits are reinvested into company operations as well as the lives of the staff. Chris’ aim is to provide steady employment to 300 orphaned young people in Rwanda. Chris says ‘Every one of our cards is carefully made by hand, and are born of simple office waste paper. We make all of our handmade paper from discarded scraps that would otherwise be destined to burn. Not only is this environmentally friendly, it also ensures that we have a large range of base colours and textures of paper to work with. On average it takes 30 minutes to make one card - so each card really is a labour of love!’ To see Cards from Africa’s complete range go to: www. cardsfromafrica.co.uk. Custom orders are welcome. If you are interested in becoming a Cards from Africa representative, earning money and helping African families, then visit: www.cardsfromafrica.co.uk/joinus.
