Spring 2013 Springtime at last! Longer, warmer days means we’ll be able to start enjoying the outdoors more with our children - from Northamptonshire’s lovely country parks to the local farms and zoo parks, there’s so much to do. To encourage a love of the outdoors and an interest in nature from an early age, we’re delighted to bring you a new feature courtesy of the Rangers at Fermyn Woods Country Park - Tots Nature Watch on page 6. Take a simple stroll through the parks and see what you can spot this spring from the ‘Tot to Spot’ list. We’ll then a have a new list for you in the summer! Also new this issue is our ‘Pregnancy & Birth’ section. We’ve widened the reach of the magazine to cover bump to 5, and not just 0 to 5, to make it useful to expectant parents too. A big thank-you to everyone who has contributed this issue, especially our lovely readers who wrote in with their interesting birth stories. Even if your story didn’t get published we greatly appreciate you sharing it with us. As usual with our spring issue we’ve included an Easter ‘What’s On’ guide so you can start planning your Easter weekend. We’ve decided what we’re doing already - amongst other things, a day out at the races! Last time we had a family day at the races, my then 4 year old daughter’s tactic of backing horses whose jockeys wore pink jerseys, beat the rest of us hands down so think I might try that this time! Whatever you do this spring we hope you have fun! Until the summer...

Vanessa

Spring Restart of Nature Tots at Fermyn Woods Country Park

F

ollowing several requests by mums who love to see their Tots explore and interact with nature, the Rangers are re-starting Nature Tots at Fermyn Woods Country Park near Brigstock. Sessions will start at 10am and will be held on the second Thursday of every month during term time. The first session will be a special Easter themed session on Thursday 14th March. Nature Tots is a popular activity, held on the second Wednesday of every month, at Barnwell Country Park near Oundle. Here children from 18 months up to school age are guided by an experienced Ranger on a short nature trail, followed by craft activities tailored to the season. In January the Tots had fun making ice mobiles and creating animal collages using nature’s materials – spikey teasels adorned hedgehogs and soft moss and feathers on rabbits. The children were fascinated by the natural mobiles glistening in the winter sunshine. Hazel, mother to Lilly aged 3 said, “My children just love to be outside and this is just great that they get to have fun and learn about nature. We really look forward to it each month”. Pre-booking is required for all sessions – please phone Ranger Jo on 07703 160878. Each session is £3 per child which includes all activities and refreshments. For more information on Northamptonshire’s Country Parks visit: www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/parks

Indoor Fun at Stanwick Lakes

Get to know other parents over tea or coffee and let your children play with a variety of toys and on the soft play equipment available in the Hideaway. Music and Movement will run a 45 minute session of singing and dancing, and the children can then wind down with a craft activity inspired by our beautiful surroundings. £1.50 for children over 90 cm and £1.00 for children under 90 cm. Normal carpark charges apply.

We’d like to wish all mothers a very happy & relaxing Mothering Sunday on the 10th March!

Junk Modelling in the Discovery Zone On the first Saturday of every month, come and make a fantastic model out of junk in the Discovery Zone between 1 and 4pm. This event is supported by the Phoenix Resource Centre. Arts, Crafts & Games in the Discovery Zone Let your children explore the education room whilst making different crafts and meeting the lovely volunteers at Stanwick Lakes. 1 to 4pm every weekend and daily during school holidays. Tots Nature Watch: Spring 2013 Ramblings of a Ranger Tot to Spot

Can you and your tot spot these 5 signs of spring: 1.

A white dead nettle

2.

Some frog spawn

3.

A catkin

4.

A yellow flower

5.

A butterfly

S

pring is definitely my favourite time of year with wildlife bursting into life all around us. It’s a great time to be out and about with young children exploring the signs of Spring in our local Country Parks. For me, not much beats the joy of seeing the first green tips of bulbs pushing up through the frosted soil. If you look carefully in the ponds and ditches at Fermyn Woods Country Park you may see frogs and toads who have ventured out from under logs and stones where they have spent the winter months, and are now heading for the ponds to lay their eggs. You may even see the strings of toad eggs and clumps of frogspawn in the ponds already. Encourage your little ones to look up into the skies for the first butterflies such as the Tortoiseshell and Yellow Brimstone, who will be waking up as they are warmed by the Spring sunshine. In the woods at Irchester Country Park, look out for early flowers such as the bright yellow Celandine and, amongst the grassy areas, you may spot the curious furry horse shoe shaped leaves of the Coltsfoot which goes on to develop a yellow dandelion like flower on a thick stem. White and Red Dead Nettles are also starting to flower and you can amaze your older children with your power to resist the sting of nettles…. before revealing the secret that White and Red Dead Nettles don’t sting! Point out to your children the abundant catkins on the Pussy Willows along the banks of the river and lakes at Barnwell Country Park. These catkins are the male flowers producing pollen which then has to travel by wind to seek out the female flowers. Whilst you are out on your walks, why not challenge your tot to spot the five signs of Spring listed here. Or you could get your tot to make a Native American Memory Stick by simply taking some string with you, find a short stick and bind on the various treasures they find that tells the story of your walk. It may be a feather, or a leaf or some moss next to a damp stone....you will be amazed at what they will find!

It is designed to develop your child’s skills of agility, balance, co-ordination and climbing while at the same time encouraging their sense of self-confidence and selfesteem.

Hypnotherapy for a More Confident Childbirth

H

ypnotherapy can be a very positive experience for expectant parents. An expectant mum can go through many challenges during her pregnancy, bouts of sickness being just one of them. So, with all the recent stories about Kate Middleton’s pregnancy and the challenges she’s been facing, it is extremely reassuring to read that she is using Hypnotherapy to help her overcome them, giving her the confidence to relax and enjoy her pregnancy more. For expectant parents, pregnancy should be a time of joy, anticipation and bonding with their babyto-be. A preparation of a new phase in their lives, blessed with a child. But often this joyful time can sometimes be shadowed by birthing fears or concerns, heightened by frequently related birthing stories, preparing you for the worst. We are all different, which is where hypnosis helps. It is totally possible to enjoy your pregnancy, through the support of Hypnosis, helping you feel more in control of the birthing experience in a positive way. Research has proven that Hypnosis can significantly help: • Reduce fear, tension and pain • Increase ability to relax mentally and physically • Reduce need for pain medication (reducing side effects) • Shorten labour • Reduce incidence of surgical interventions • Promotes higher Apgar baby wellbeing score

• Shorten hospital stay • Reduced post-natal depression • Promote lactation The Confident Childbirth approach of Hypnobirthing is a safe, flexible method using positive hypnosis & psychology practices from within Cognitive Hypnotherapy, in a sensitive & caring way ~ tailored specifically to suit your needs as an individual. So whether you are a first time mum or a mum to many, the personalised Confident Childbirth approach can make a big difference to how you can be prepared for a more positive labour. No two pregnancies are the same, so you are given the support that is right for you and your baby. Whether that might be minimising the effects of morning sickness; bonding with your baby; pain control; relaxation techniques; confidence building or imagining that precious moment with your baby safely in your arms and your heart filled with joy and love. . . a calm birth is a great start to new family life! Your Amazing Childbirth Stories...

A BIG thank-you to our lovely readers for sharing their extraordinary birth stories with us. Stories we hope will entertain and inspire you...

“The doctor grabbed her head and bottom and literally pushed her round the right way! It was an amazing thing to see!” Emma, Mum to Morgan aged 9 months

E

mma was taken into hospital to be induced with her third child. Luckily for Emma the first attempt at induction didn’t work and when the doctor came round to examine her they discovered her baby was breech! She had always thought that her tummy felt a weird shape with a large hard ball at the top, but she was always told it was the baby’s bottom. A subsequent scan confirmed the doctor’s finding so Emma was given the choice of having a c-section or having her baby turned and having her naturally. Having 2 other children Emma wanted to avoid a major operation if she could so opted to have her baby turned. “It was an amazing thing to see!” said Emma. “I was given a drug that relaxed the womb so the doctor could grab hold of her better. The doctor then grabbed her head and bottom and literally pushed her round the right way! It looked like magic! It felt a little uncomfortable but didn’t hurt” Emma went on to have a normal vaginal birth and a gorgeous, healthy little girl. “I was the talk of the labour ward that day!” said Emma. “I would definitely recommend that women in a similar position think about trying this if they have the option. It doesn’t always work, the baby can sometimes flip back the wrong way, but luckily for me it worked well!”

A

“I had planned to have my 3rd child in hospital...but my little lady had other ideas!” Claire, Mum to Freya aged 5 weeks

fter two long labours with her two sons, both of which required ventouse for delivery, Claire was not prepared for what happened with her third child! Claire’s baby girl, Freya, arrived 9 days late in January of this year. Claire had started to get a few twinges while picking her eldest child up from school at 3.15pm but carried on as normal. After having a ‘show’ however 45 minutes later things started to progress rather quickly and by 4.45pm Claire was on all fours on her bed fighting the urge to push! Luckily Claire had her Mum with her who promptly phoned labour ward. A midwife was sent out immediately and arrived in time to deliver Claire’s beautiful baby girl at 5.38pm weighing a healthy 7lb 11oz. “I had planned to have my 3rd baby in hospital, after needing assistance with the first two I wanted to be safe, but my little lady had other plans!” said Claire. Freya had passed meconium inside so both Claire and Freya were transferred to hospital for monitoring but all was well and mother and baby were home the next day. “She is perfect! Her 2 big brothers are as smitten as Mummy and Daddy”.

“The most difficult thing about my VBAC was dealing with the fear” Kati, Mum to Hal aged 6 months

K

ati had to have an emergency c-section with her first child when Eva refused to come out at the pushing stage - Kati later found out that Eva was lying in a transverse position at the time of delivery so there was no way she was going to come out without help! There was no reason to believe the same would happen again though so when Kati fell pregnant with her second child, she was keen to try for a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean). After reading up as much as she could on VBACs and preparing herself mentally, Kati went into labour 11 days early. She was keen to keep active

Kati’s story continued...

during her labour to help the baby move into a good position for delivery, and despite having to wear a monitor throughout (so the midwives could keep an eye on the baby and detect any sign of distress) Kati was still able to do this. The labour progressed slowly initially but when her waters were broken, after hours with little happening, things started to escalate. “When it came to the pushing stage I remember thinking ‘Oh no! I’ve actually got to do this!’ but the midwives and Pete were great and helped me focus”. The baby’s heart rate started to drop but having come so far Kati was determined she was going to do it. The midwife gave her an episiotomy and with that her son Hal was born on the 19th August 2012! “He was born with the cord round his neck which is why his heart rate dipped but with a quick rub he was absolutely fine. I was able to cuddle, feed and marvel at him straight away!” said Kati “I was and still am very proud that my body and I managed to deliver a baby naturally this time! The most difficult thing about it was dealing with the fear but my consultant and midwife were confident I could do it, I just had to believe in myself and my body”. Who Do You Think You Are? Parenthood and Personal Identity

Article by Rachel Bridgeford of Soul Attention Counselling Service Local qualified counsellor and Mum of 2

here are some phrases that, as parents of young children we all hear from time to time: ‘Make sure you make time for yourself’, ‘It’s important when your children are young to still spend time as a couple’, and my personal favourite: ‘the housework can wait, make sure you sleep when the baby does’. Well intentioned advice for sure and I’m not saying there is no truth or worth in it. I absolutely agree that all those things are important, essential even, to bear in mind when your children are little. However there is a fundamental problem with the doling out of such phrases that is often overlooked by those caring folks who offer them. The way in which you identify with yourself as a parent, what you believe a parent is/should be, is key to your willingness and ability to act on such advice. What do I mean by this? Well, take a minute, and be honest with yourself, maybe even write down your responses. What does being a mum or dad mean to you? Think about things like how much time should a mum or dad spend playing or having quality time with their children?’ What level of input and stimulation from a parent is required for your child to reach their full potential? If necessary what else should fall by the wayside so that these things can happen? And if you fall short of your own target what would that mean? Now consider your own answers to these questions. Reflect on how much of your time and energy is spent in pursuit of these goals and you will start to gain a concept of how much of your personal identity, who you think you are, is wrapped up in being a parent. I’m sure many of you would agree that, shown as a percentage, the proportion of your self concept that is ‘mum’ or ‘dad’ is significant, large even. Possibly, for some of you, there may be little else. This would particularly apply to ‘stay at home’ parents.

But what inhabited that space before? Before the children when pregnancy, babies and family life was just something that other people did that you were possibly planning for one day in the future. Who were you then? My intention with this article is not to create nostalgia for those carefree days of little responsibility and lots of sleep. I truly believe that the time we spend as parents fulfils something in us in a way that no other achievement could, but I do want to voice a note of caution. As you are going about your daily parenting duties, sometimes finding it a great pleasure, sometimes finding it as arduous as we all know it can be, take care to remember that this is not all you are. You are many other things too and whatever things those are deserve space in your awareness. Inevitably one day, in fact more and more so each day, our children will not need us. Our parenting personas will gradually, even though they will never be obsolete, become less and less necessary as a feature in our lives. And when that happens you will need to have something left. So give those other parts of your personality room to breathe, grow and continue to exist. Add into your personal concept of a parent the fact that they are also people with their own lives, hopes and dreams and needs. And don’t feel guilty for it because if your children see you being happy to be yourself and see you knowing yourself well, then that is a gift you are passing onto them too. Maybe I’m preaching to the converted here but if my words help even one person who may have been struggling with balancing personal needs with the needs of small children then my work here is done…

For advice and support on any parenting related issue, please e-mail Rachel at: rachelbridgeford@live.co.uk. Alternatively you can write to Soul Attention Counselling Service at 27 The Pyghtles, Wollaston, Northamptonshire, NN29 7QD. All correspondence will be treated confidentially and can be kept anonymous if you prefer.
