ello and Welcome to the Spring Issue....
With Mothering Sunday coming up at the end of March we have a big focus on Mum’s this issue! Our special Mothering Sunday feature starts on page 28 and includes stories from local mothers, sharing with us their most memorable Mothers Days, and special messages from children telling us why they love their Mummy. We’re asking readers to nominate a local ‘Mum in a Million’ who they think deserves a special pampering treat this Spring, so please get e-mailing us with your nominations. The winner will receive a Mothers Day Pamper package courtesy of Sanctuary of Beauty in Desborough. Another big focus this issue is on family days out and activities with children. Check out all the advertisements for local attractions and our Easter feature on pages 16 to 17 with ideas for trips out over the long Easter weekend. You can even win tickets for some events on our competitions page, starting on page 53. Living so close to London as we do, a family day trip to our nation’s capital makes for a very exciting day out for all! If you’ve been thinking about doing this, turn to our feature on pages 10 to 11 for our pick of the best London attractions with children. Wishing you all a fun-filled spring and Mothers a very happy, relaxing Mothering Sunday on the 30th. Until the summer...

The Time for Tots BIG TODDLE
Coming Soon!
F
ollowing the success of our Barnardo’s Big Toddle 4 years ago we’ve decided to do it all again! (We’ve just about recovered from the first one!) For those of you that have never heard of the Big Toddle, it is a sponsored walk for under 5s to raise money for children’s charity Barnardo’s. We raised nearly £2000 at our last toddle with over 150 children taking part. We’re hoping to make this year’s toddle even bigger and better! We’re still waiting for confirmation of the date and location at the time of going to press, so please look out for details soon on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ timefortotsmagazine) and our next issue out in June.
Nominate a local charity... The Big Toddle is a Barnardo’s initiative and the majority of money raised is donated to Barnardo’s; however we can give 25% of the money raised to a local charity. If you run or know of a local children’s charity that would benefit from our support please email the details to us at info@timefortots. co.uk. Last time we supported local charity ‘Brighter Beginnings’ who provide families in need with essential babycare and hygiene items. If you have any questions about our forthcoming Big Toddle or would like to get involved, please email us at: info@timefortots.co.uk.

Tots News Continued
Celebrating 50 Years!
n January 1964, the widow of a farmer near Peterborough created a legacy for her late husband by forming a trust in his memory. Fifty years later The William Scott Abbott Trust is still going strong at Sacrewell Farm near Wansford. Although William Scott Abbott and his wife Mary would not recognise parts of the Farm as it stands today, the educational values they were so desperate to achieve are still very much alive. Marketing and Communications Officer at the Trust Megan Horner said: “William and Mary had no children and their views on farming were thought to be very radical at the time! William had a background in engineering and spent some time in America where he learned about the farming methods they used and brought them back to the UK. When the Trust was formed 50 years ago the aim was to teach people about agriculture, food and farming by giving them hands on experience. People would come to the Farm to watch and observe the farmers as they worked.” In 1982, William’s nephew David Powell, who was managing the Farm at the time, made the decision to create a visitor centre at Sacrewell. It was the first step in creating the farm centre at it is known today. The farm land was leased to other companies so that the Trust could focus on running the centre and creating an educational facility. The Farm currently welcomes about 8,000 school children each year who come to see the animals and learn about farming. Now, in 2014, the farm centre is once again undergoing a transformation. To mark the 50th anniversary and the beginning of the £1.7m Watermill Project the farm centre is rebranding as Sacrewell Farm and Watermill. The Trust is also investing more than £100,000 in upgrading its Activity Barn and its small animal village to create even more provision for families when they visit the Farm. The Farm has also revamped its events programme to celebrate its 50th anniversary to include a Spring Fair on May 4th and 5th which will celebrate the rich history of the Farm and the surrounding countryside. For more information about what’s on at Sacrewell this year please visit their website:

Featured Class: Balanceability What is ‘Balanceability’? Balanceability is the UK’s first and only accredited ‘learn to cycle programme for children’. It is accredited by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education and supports the National Government Healthy Active Lifestyle campaign Change4life.
What is the aim of the classes? Balanceability comprises a structured lesson that help children between the ages of 2/3 years to 6 years (and older) to develop gross motor skills, special awareness, dynamic and static balance, bilateral coordination along with the necessary skills to make the transition from a balance bike to an ordinary pedal bike in a safe, challenging but fun way. Balanceability eradicates the use of stabilisers and promotes the fundamental skill of cycling: balance.
Talk us through a typical class... The classes are fun. Children are warmed up with a selection of techniques including running, hopping and skipping. A balancing and agility activity is then carried out using a range of equipment like agility ladders, stepping-stones and throw down lines. Balance bikes (bikes with no pedals) are then used to teach children how to pick up, manoeuvre, mount and dismount their bikes and then learn the skills to ride a bike safely. We use cones and road signs for the children to learn skills of gliding, steering and how to brake. The session ends with a fun cool down game for example with beanbags and hoola hoops.
What ages are the classes for?
Level One is aimed at children from around 3 or a little younger to 4 years. At this level fundamental movement patterns, gross motor skills and dynamic balance are incorporated along with an introduction to the balance bike. Level Two is aimed at children ages 4 years to 6 years old. Some younger children have the confidence to participate in Level Two immediately on completion of a Level One.
When and where do you run classes? Courses are 6 weeks in length and run in and around Market Harborough.
How long does each class last?
Each session is around 45 minutes depending on the numbers within the class.
How much does a class cost? A course of 6 weeks costs £57.
Contact: Ceri Moore Tel: 07894 686 873 / 01858 545994 Email: groovyriders@btinternet.com Website: www.balanceability.com
How do the classes benefit children?
Most children learn to crawl before they walk and to run before they bike. So it is surprising that some people expect children to progress from tricycles and bicycles with stabilisers to bicycles without having had the opportunity to master all aspects of static and dynamic balance. Balanceability gives children the confidence to continue participating in the sport of cycling through to adulthood. The element of fun at this age is important as the higher the level of enjoyment gained from participating in cycling the less aware a child is of the physical exertion that is necessary, ultimately maintaining the children’s interest in cycling and exercise. The Benefits of Baby Swimming Article by Melanie Hammond and Carly Parton of Infant Aquatics
B
aby and Toddler swimming has become a very popular activity in the UK and research has shown babies who swim are far better developed socially, mentally and physically. Teaching your baby the joys of swimming is a bonding and fun experience for both parent and child. Through gentle encouragement and lots of praise you will soon see your baby’s progress. Swimming from an early age is beneficial to natural development and co-ordination. A good time to start is when baby is between 3 and 6 months old. In a weightless environment babies can move more freely without restriction. This means they develop more muscle tone and strength and can exercise joints making them more flexible. It is also reported that babies that swim regularly often have improved appetites and sleeping patterns. Spending quality one to one time with total focus on each other in the pool, having fun and relaxing time together is extremely beneficial to baby and adult. Social benefits include strong communication, interaction and learning to share and take turns. Natural Instincts – Babies are born with natural swimming reflexes such as the ‘gag reflex’, which allows them to hold their breath under water and the ‘amphibian’ reflex which enables the whole body to move through the water. By using different techniques and moves, swimming can stimulate their natural reflexes into voluntary actions as they develop. The first visit to a pool should be as relaxed as possible, letting your little one get used to the different sounds, smells and sights in this new
environment. A good way to introduce your baby to the swimming pool and really maximise the benefits is to join a swimming course or programme, there you will have the opportunity to meet other parents and to learn specialised skills specifically for your baby’s development stage. Parents do not need to be strong swimmers and some parents attend because they do not want their own fear of water to be passed onto their children. A good lesson structure should include many different activities with fun action songs, learning how to hold and move baby on their front and back, learning safety and wall skills and developing submersion techniques and breath control. All activities should be adapted to suit your baby’s age, experience and developmental stage. Lessons should be conducted in a playful, stress free environment, allowing baby to progress at their own pace. Water safety is paramount and considered to be an essential life skill, unfortunately drowning is still a large cause of infant fatality in the UK, however it is believed that if children are familiar with the aquatic environment from an early age they will remain relaxed and have a better chance of survival if they were ever to be in a potentially dangerous situation in water. Article by Melanie Hammond and Carly Parton, Infant Aquatics who run specialised baby and toddler swimming courses in Wellingborough, Wollaston and Kettering. My Most Memorable Mothering Sunday... A Mothering Sunday Special
A
s we look forward to Mothering Sunday, on the 30th March, four local Mums share with us their most memorable Mothering Sunday to date...
Natalie
Mum to Imogen, Isla and Kiera (and 4th baby on the way!) My most memorable mothers day was in 2011. I spent the day trying to make clay imprints of hands with my two daughters, Imogen and Isla, but they were inexplicably excited. We do them every Mothers Day to see how they grow. My other half had been absent most of the day so I was a little annoyed by the afternoon but we got ready and went out for a meal as planned. When we got to the restaurant all my family were there with balloons and my daughters were shouting ‘Say yes!’. I was confused and then stunned when I turned to my partner, to be presented with a ring and him asking me to marry him! We got married in September 2012. Finally getting to have the same surname as the rest of my family was the icing on the cake. We’ve since had another daughter, Keira, and have another on the way. I see Mothers day 2011 as the beginning of our family’s happy ever after but when you have a family, everyday brings things that you never want to forget.
Davina
Mum to Violet My most memorable mothers day was my first as a mother in 2008, I had given birth to my beautiful daughter Violet days before so it was a year full of firsts for me. As most mothers will tell you the first few weeks with a newborn fly by in a haze of visitors, sleepless nights and nappies, but I remember waking up that day, not to the cries of a hungry, baby but to the smells of hot fresh coffee and buttery croissants wafting up the stairs, top marks to my husband that morning! Although the rest of the day had it’s usual demands of feeding, burping and bathing I have a single perfect memory of us all snuggled up on the sofa in front of a roaring open fire, Violet snuffling on my chest while my husband and I snatched half an hours peace before it all started over again. To me it’s all about the little moments and simple pleasures that make the day and show you care. I’ll never forget that Mothering Sunday.

Jennie
Mum to Rosie I guess my favourite Mother’s Day was last year when we had a princess tea party. Rosie wore her princess dress and tiara and I wore my wedding dress. We had cucumber sandwiches and cupcakes and then danced most of the afternoon! It was so magical and real quality time together just having fun.
Jess
Mum to Angel My most memorable Mothers Day so far was my first one which was last year. My daughter was just 3 months old and on Mothers Day we had her christened! Not only was it the most special Mothers Day because I was now a Mummy, but because I was the most proud Mummy of our little girl! She is just gorgeous and despite it being Mothers Day we had a huge turn out and the church was full. Our parents say it was a very proud day for them too; especially my Mum who was proud of me and her granddaughter. We went on to celebrate with family and friends with food and drink at a local pub... the best mothers day EVER! A BIG thank-you to Natalie, Davina, Jennie and Jess for sharing their stories with us and to Dynamic Hair in Market Harborough and Beauty by Ali in Kettering who have sponsored this feature and donated a Cut & Blow Dry and a Jessica Manicure to each Mum by way of thank-you.

Time for Mum
A Reader’s Review: Sanctuary of Beauty
I
had the pleasure of visiting Sanctuary of Beauty in Desborough for a few hours of heaven. I booked in for the Mothers Day Package, which consisted of a full body scrub, full body massage and a manicure. I also booked a pedicure for even more much needed ME time. Having 2 children, juggling work, school runs, tantrums, dinnertime, bath time and all the other daily routines, having some time for me is very rare! The salon itself is beautiful. Stunningly designed it’s a very calm, tranquil and pleasant environment and the staff I found to be friendly, warm and welcoming. My treatment started with the pedicure, even the bowl I soaked my feet in was beautiful - a gorgeous ceramic bowl filled with warm water and petals. It felt very luxurious and was a real treat. After the pedicure I went to another treatment room upstairs for my full body scrub and massage. The room was so peaceful with candles and relaxing music. It can take me a while to wind down but by the end of the treatment I could have rolled over and gone to sleep! For anyone that may feel nervous or embarrassed about full body treatments it was all done in a very discrete way so at no point would you feel uncomfortable. You are covered in towels and the therapist works on each body area at a time, carefully placing the towels back over before moving onto the next part. The therapist kept me informed of what was happening in a gentle way, ensuring I remained relaxed and comfortable. The scrub was applied and removed first and then you had some time to let your skin calm before the massage. It was amazing and I enjoyed every second. After my massage, I was given as much time as I needed before getting up to come downstairs. I got up fairly soon as I was worried I may actually fall asleep! I went back downstairs for my manicure and to finish off my pedicure. The therapist worked on the nails and cuticles and finished off with a French
polish effect on hands and toes. I was really pleased with the result - they looked very natural. I would highly recommend a visit to this salon. I felt exhausted and run down when I arrived but felt totally refreshed by the time I left. Having experienced the Mothers Day Package, I would highly recommend it. Time to drop some big hints to the Dads of the house! Or just treat yourself or your own Mum perhaps. Sanctuary of Beauty offer a wide range of treatments and their prices are very reasonable. Pop into the salon for a price list or go online and take a look: www.sanctuaryofbeauty.co.uk. A huge thank-you to Sam, Jess and Tiff for a truly lovely time. I plan to be back very soon for some more pampering!

The Underwear Rule
Teach your child the Underwear Rule and help protect them from abuse
The Underwear Rule is a simple way that parents can help keep children safe from abuse - without using scary words or mentioning sex. The NSPCC has developed this simple guide for parents, (and a child-friendly version available online), to help you talk PANTS with your child. PANTS is an easy way for you to explain to your child the key elements of the Underwear Rule:
Privates are private
Be clear with your child that the parts of their body covered by underwear are private. Explain to your child that no one should ask to see or touch their private parts or ask them to look at or touch anyone else’s. Sometimes doctors, nurses or family members might have to. Explain that this is OK, but that those people should always explain why, and ask your child if it’s OK first.
Always remember your body belongs to you
Let your child know their body belongs to them, and no one else. No-one has the right to make them do anything that makes them feel uncomfortable. And if anyone tries, tell your child they have the right to say no. Remind your child that they can always talk to you about anything that worries or upsets them.
No means no
Make sure your child understands that they have the right to say “no” to unwanted touch - even to a family member or someone they know or love. This shows that they’re in control of their body and their feelings should be respected. If a child feels confident to say no to their own family, they are more likely to say no to others.
Talk about secrets that upset you Explain the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ secrets. Phrases like “it’s our little secret” are an abuser’s way of making a child feel worried, or scared to tell someone what is happening to them. Good secrets can be things like surprise parties or presents for other people. Bad secrets make you feel sad, worried or frightened. Your child needs to feel able to speak up about secrets that worry them and confident that saying something won’t get them into trouble. Telling a secret will never hurt or worry anybody in your family or someone you know and love.
Speak up, someone can help
Tell your child that if they ever feel sad, anxious or frightened they should talk to an adult they trust. This doesn’t have to be a family member. It can also be a teacher or a friend’s parent - or even ChildLine Remind them that whatever the problem, it’s not their fault and they will never get into trouble for speaking up.
