I SPENT LAST WEEKEND WITH from New York City. They FRIENDS explained that NYC is coming back to life as the pandemic

restrictions lift: restaurants are packed, young people are visiting, real estate is booming. My friends are particularly relieved, given that so many people left the city to work remotely from other places. It made me think of a great new game: If you could live and work anywhere, and money was no object (like I said, it’s a game), where would you go? I would still choose St. Louis.

What is it about this city that makes it so special? Is it that you can, without a lot of planning, hop in the car and be somewhere exciting? A world-class sporting event. Shakespeare in the Park. Dinner in Lafayette Square. The farmers market in Tower Grove Park. St. Louis has all of the benefits of a big city without all of the hassle. My husband is from a Boston suburb. When we were dating, I’d ask him how long it would take to get somewhere—the airport, downtown Boston, a Red Sox game—and he’d always say 30 minutes. It became a running joke. If you’ve ever been to Boston, you know why. It takes an hour to drive 15 miles. Here, on the other hand, distance or traffic is rarely an issue. We can easily get to the Arch, the Butterfly House, Forest Park, the Zoo, the City Museum, old town St. Charles and Creve Coeur Lake. St. Louis also has a bit of everything. If you’re a foodie, we have award-winning restaurants and microbreweries. If you’re a sports fan, nothing beats a Cards or Blues game—except maybe our new Major League Soccer team, St. Louis CITY SC. If you’re looking for culture, you can lose yourself in the Saint Louis Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum and the Missouri History Museum. If you want to be outside, you can wander through the Missouri Botanical Garden, walk the trails in Queeny Park or bike the Katy Trail. Is theater your thing? You can catch a great performance at The Fabulous Fox, The Gaslight Theatre or The Muny (to name a few). In my opinion, what really makes this a special place is the people. And I hope to see my fellow St. Louisians out and about this summer, enjoying all our great city has to offer.

by stephanie wallace breakout-free while consistently exposing it to potentially harmful and aging forces like the sun and other environmental elements. Thankfully, with a little help, you can keep your complexion youthful and healthy. A thoughtfully designed skin care regimen can help you tackle fine lines, discoloration, acne and other issues, according to Jackie Carr, R.N., ANP-BC, LE, owner of Pur-One Medispa in Des Peres. The medical spa offers a variety of effective skin treatments along with microblading through ChristineBrows. Carr’s most important skin care recommendation is using a physical sunscreen every day. “It really is the number one anti-aging product on the market,” she says. “For my patients, I recommend EltaMD. The brand has an array of products that address specific concerns like hyperpigmentation, rosacea and dry skin.” EltaMD’s newest option is Restore. Available in tinted and untinted options, it offers broad-spectrum SPF 40 protection and contains squalane, an anti-aging emollient that revitalizes photodamaged skin. “It can help minimize ‘brown spots’ while providing improvement to fine lines, wrinkles and overall complexion,” Carr notes. Restore is considered safe for all skin types, but Carr recommends that acne-prone people use the product with caution. If you tend to break out, she suggests trying EltaMD Clear, which contains niacinamide or vitamin B3. “Niacinamide can reduce inflammation in the tissue, which is a root contributor to skin disorders like acne,” she explains. “If a patient is on a budget, the brand’s AM and PM Therapy products are great options. They offer anti-aging benefits at an exceptional price point.” EltaMD products are available at Pur-One, and Carr offers free consultations to determine which options best fit people’s skin types and lifestyles. Another product Carr suggests is a high quality vitamin C serum, which offers antioxidant protection from everyday stressors like free radicals, sunlight and environmental pollutants. Along with protecting the skin, these serums can improve

texture and overall appearance and slow down the aging process. “My first choice for patients is SkinCeuticals serums,” she says. “They are scientifically validated and have proven results.” She adds that proper application can be discussed during a complimentary consultation at Pur-One. Carr recommends including your neck and chest in your skin care routine. “It is never too early to start caring for these delicate structures, and it can help prevent the need for more invasive procedures,” she explains. SkinPen microneedling recently was approved by the FDA for treatment of the neck. It’s a good solution for what Carr dubs ‘tech neck,’ the extra lines and imperfections that come with increased time spent looking at a screen. “I suggest starting with three treatments spaced at four- to six-week intervals,” she says. “For the best results, you can combine microneedling with other treatments, and for at-home care, DefenAge helps with tissue repair and the improvement of texture, fine lines and wrinkles.” The most popular treatment at Pur-One is Botox, and Carr notes it offers substantial results with just a few simple injections. “People always comment on the ‘Botox glow,’” she says. “I have COURTNEY CARR OF more than 20 years of experience in application, CHRISTINEBROWS and I am excited to continue serving St. Louis AND JACKIE CARR and surrounding areas.” & PHOTO COURTESY OF PUR-ONE MEDISPA

Scams are a hot mess. If a sucker is born every minute, every 60 seconds somebody also comes into this world who’s all too willing to snooker him or her out of a dollar or thousands of them. Solicitations from ‘BidenCare’ have been appearing in my email inbox. Four, so far. Each with a different confirmation code, and all originating from American Cars Brands of Tucson, Arizona. And wouldn’t you know it, I just got a solicitation from the same folks for car insurance. Interesting. Let’s back up a bit. Maybe that’s not a scam, or even a bait-and-switch tactic. It’s just disingenuous. All that American Cars Brands does is hook you up with local insurance companies based on your ZIP code. You might as well ‘let your fingers do the walking’ through the yellow pages, if such a thing has survived into our highly technological age. Come to think of it, it’s been quite some time since one or two of those impossibly thick volumes— Charles Atlas, legend has it, could tear a phonebook in half—thudded on the front stoop hard enough to crack the concrete. An internet search can provide options; just keep your eye out for SEO, which is the acronym for search engine optimization. Companies pay for better placement among various providers, so the top few choices paid to be there. Anyhow, if you need health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, go directly to the source: healthcare.gov. For one thing, ‘BidenCare’ isn’t a thing yet, any more than ObamaCare was the official name for the insurance one may get via the ACA. The ‘fine print’ from the Tucson outfit reads: “By clicking the submit button, I expressly consent by electronic signature to receive communications via automatic telephone dialing system or by artificial/pre-recorded message, email, or by text message from this website and multiple partner companies or their agents at the telephone number above (even if my number is currently listed on any state, federal, local, or corporate Do Not Call list).” Mercy me! All of that is exactly what I do not want: annoyance calls, junk mail and spam. Looks like that’s a setting I need to revisit on my PC.

The exhibition will fill the new Starry Night Pavilion just outside the Saint Louis Galleria. This unique, awe-inspiring entertainment plunges the viewer—art lover or neophyte—into a 3D world that exhilarates the senses. In a rich multimedia virtual environment using highly advanced projection technology, “Beyond Van Gogh” adds surprising perspective to the artist’s unique body of work. While journeying through the exhibit, visitors experience more than 300 masterpieces—as though freed from their frames—including instantly recognizable classics, such as The Starry Night, Sunflowers and Café Terrace at Night. Van Gogh’s art comes to life by appearing, disappearing and reappearing across multiple surfaces in immense detail. Bold brushstrokes are evident on your body, the floor and walls. Through Van Gogh’s own words set to a symphonic score, viewers come to a new appreciation of the tortured artist’s work. Millions of people all over the world credit Van Gogh with enhancing their relationship with art. “Beyond Van Gogh” will only deepen it further. “Rock and roll is here to stay / It will never die ...” ~Danny & The Juniors “Long Live Rock!” ~The Who “Rock Is Dead” ~Marilyn Manson Well, two out of three ain’t bad. The first two quotations cite rock classics. The third is from a shock rocker in a boatload of legal peril from his alleged extracurricular sexual abuses—Manson soon might be trading his fake name for a number on an orange jumpsuit. But we digress. If Johnny Winter is “Still Alive and Well,” so is the classic rock scene in the StL, in part thanks to Keep Live Alive Saint Louis, a community fundraiser presented by the St. Louis Classic Rock Preservation Society. So far, the effort has raised $100,000, enough to provide a $1,000 grant for every qualified industry applicant who lost income during the pandemic. The campaign launched in March with a 90-minute video featuring local radio personalities from KSHE 95, 92.3 WIL, 105.7 The Point and 106.5 The Arch, along with local and national recording artists and entertainers, including Sammy Hagar, REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin, Mama’s Pride’s Pat and Danny Liston, and comic Paula Poundstone. Performance venues—The Fabulous Fox Theatre, Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, The Pageant, The Muny, Enterprise Center, Loretto-Hilton Center for the Performing Arts, The Sheldon and The Family Arena, among others—backed the campaign. The mission of the nonprofit Classic Rock Preservation Society is to preserve, promote and honor St. Louis’ unique classic rock heritage and its place in music and pop culture history. With the pandemic in the rearview mirror and apparently not catching up but falling back, there’s plenty more history to be made in the Gateway City.

TOWN TALK

Wildwood Before there was even a there there, Jack Clark lived there … “there” being a vast, unincorporated, hilly and wooded area of St. Louis County that in 1995 officially became incorporated as the City of Wildwood. It’s the second-largest city in the state by land area, and at 32,000-some residents, the third-largest in the county by population, topped only by U. City and Chesterfield. Clark and his wife were used to living in sort of the middle of nowhere, having moved west from near Queeny Park about six years before the Wildwood dream became reality. They’ve now lived in the same house for 32 years. Meanwhile, Clark has discovered that, in fact, there can be a second act in American lives. At 80, he is CEO emeritus, of sorts, of The DeSIGNery, a graphic design shop founded in 1995 that he sold in 2009. Many an average American would have retired—after all, he was 68—but he still consults for the company. “I don’t know that I bring too much brain power to the business,” Clark says, offhandedly. “But I am an extra pair of hands.” Specialties of the firm still include signage for ADA compliance, braille and the like. As for Clark’s other role in his second act? City government; the Wildwood City Council, to be specific. He started in 2011 by completing an unfilled term as Ward 4 councilman, then was elected to a full term, leaving the council in 2014. But he remains active as a member of the city’s Charter Commission, bringing invaluable management expertise and firm, informed views about what works well in government and what, apparently, does not. “Wildwood has to watch its money carefully,” Clark points out. There’s not a very robust retail presence contained within its 66 square miles. Therefore, not a whole lot of a municipality’s lifeblood (i.e., sales tax) flows into its coffers. Its more-populous neighbor, Chesterfield, generates the most sales-tax revenue by far of any city in the county, but has been litigiously unwilling to share the bounty, as we YOU’RE MUCH have reported frequently BETTER OFF WITH A over the years in this column. At inception, a vision for STRONG COUNCIL ... Wildwood was for it to remain somewhat idyllic, a ‘bedroom’ community. Big-box stores were verboten. “That might not have been the best decision,” notes Clark. That’s likely one issue the charter commission is considering this go-round—every 10 years a revised city charter must go to the population for a vote. To get an idea of something that has not worked well for the county, one need only glance at a glaring situation created by an executive with too much power: Steve Stenger, former county executive, was just released from federal prison after serving most of his sentence for mail fraud and other financial improprieties. Wildwood’s power is not centered in the mayor’s chair, which is not to cast aspersions on its present occupant. “You’re much better off with a strong council,” Clark emphasizes. “It’s harder to corrupt 16 people.” Visit cityofwildwood.com.

WHEN I LOOK AT THE PUBLICATION dates of Town&Style for the month of June, I’m always sad if the second issue falls after Father’s Day. It seems like I often miss the chance to talk about dads, but since today is my brother Dennis’ birthday, this column should be all about him. Nope, can’t do 600 words on Dennis; let’s talk dads! Dads often are portrayed as bumbling, idiotic characters on TV, and that’s just not true. I’ve watched my husband parent our children with so much love (not to say there hasn’t been a time or two where he was a knucklehead). I think if you asked Tess and Jack, they would not trade their dad for anyone else. I now have the pleasure of watching my son parent his own son, and I could not be prouder. He seems to know all of the right words to say at just the right time. And my brothers, what a crew those four fathers are to their children! Each brother parents a little differently, but somehow their children have grown up to be adults who anyone would want in their family. My

brother-in-law David is a terrific dad, and it’s apparent when you have the pleasure of meeting his four sons. I have great dads all around me. Let me tell you about my dad. He hung the moon. Oh, my dad wasn’t a saint. He had some faults, but his youngest daughter (me) managed to overlook them. I was my dad’s favorite, though I suspect my other five siblings might have felt the same way (but really, it was me). My dad owned a roofing company, Fitzgerald Roofing (which is still in business for those that need a roof or repairs; you will have the pleasure of speaking to my brother Dennis or my nephew Johnny). He ‘inherited’ the company from his dad. Unfortunately, it was not really much of an inheritance since it came with a bunch of debt. But even though he had a family of three at the time, he paid off all the debts while his family went without. He was a proud man and taught us that you honor your obligations. Growing up, my family had what we needed, not what we wanted. All of us had jobs. My five siblings started working when they were 13;

I got to wait until 16. We didn’t complain. It’s what you did. My dad was the person you drank beer with on the back porch. He wanted to know about your life and work, but most of all if you were happy. He always had a good story but liked it even more if you had one that made him laugh. The man loved life. He loved his wife more than anyone else and, without a doubt, he loved his children. Grandchildren were the cherry on top. How he loved to fish with his granddaughters, even naming one of them the Fish Goddess. Cancer was relentless when it came to my dad. He got it. He beat it. He got it again. He beat it again. He got it a third time, but this time, he lost. Sure, he was in his 80s, but to me, he was far too young to go. So, when Father’s Day comes, I enjoy watching all of the dads being honored, but my heart hurts. On Father’s Day, actually on any day, I wish I could be drinking a beer with my dad on the back porch. I miss him so much.

OF HERU URBA N FARMING

Last year, we all spent a lot more time thinking about what was on our plates. The pandemic highlighted the importance of knowing where our food comes from, but for many in our community, access to fresh, quality produce is not guaranteed. Tyrean Lewis’ goal is to combat food insecurity and overcome food apartheids in St. Louis to encourage healthier lifestyles. He established Heru Urban Farming, a local farm that sustainability produces organic produce and herbs to benefit underserved populations.

Mastercoach Beth Chesteron invites you to weekly inspirational interviews with today’s change-agents. Each episode features a wealth of practical, actionable advice to raise your spirits and accelerate change.

Farming wasn’t originally Lewis’ plan. He has a decade of experience in schools, teaching both physical education and health and serving as Tyrean Lewis a substitute teacher. He followed his career in education with managerial positions at a few local businesses. “I was all over the place,” he notes. While he wasn’t involved in agriculture, he learned his family had a robust history in farming. In the late 1930s, Lewis’ great uncle and other African American farmers created an all Black co-op. “It was almost unheard of at the time,” he says. “I looked them up and discovered they won a variety of prizes at state fairs for their produce. It was cool to know my family had done that. I guess that farming is in my blood.” With his history in health education, Lewis always had an interest in eating healthy. In 2017 while looking for fresh produce in North St. Louis, he became aware of just how prevalent food disparities are in parts of our community. “The produce at the store was pitiful, and there were very few vegan options,” he notes. He decided to investigate grocery stores in other areas, starting in midtown and moving out to Clayton and further west. Even though all the stores were part of the same chain, he discovered the quality of produce and the types available were drastically different. Lewis began growing his own food in buckets, and he quickly expanded to working out of an empty lot across the street from his home. “I reached out to Brandon Bosley, the Ward 03 alderman, and he helped me get a lease for a garden,” he says. “People would come up to talk with me and ask questions. I saw there was a real interest in fresh produce.” In 2018, Lewis established Heru Urban Farming with a little more than 10,000 square feet to grow fruits and vegetables. Today, the farm has multiple plots in different areas that total four acres. To help the farm thrive, Lewis worked with several accelerators, including the BALSA Foundation and WEPOWER. Most recently, he was part of the inaugural class of the University of Missouri-St. Louis’ Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Accelerator, which was designed to empower entrepreneurs from underrepresented communities in the St. Louis startup ecosystem. Along with access to UMSL resources and business development classes, Heru Urban Farming received a $50,000 grant, which Lewis used to hire full-time employees, purchase farm insurance and procure equipment that allow him to extend the farm’s growing season. Urban Heru Farming grows a variety of produce. Along with staples like tomatoes, peppers, collards, strawberries and watermelons, Lewis works to introduce a variety of vegetables and fruits people may not be familiar with, such as Asian greens. The farm primarily distributes food through CSA subscriptions. For every five that Lewis sells, he donates a 12-week subscription to a family in need. “Currently, we have 15 families who are benefiting from the program,” he says. “Plus, we have events to feed the unhoused population the first Saturday of every month.” This summer, Heru Urban Farming also will be at Be Well Café’s Farmers Market in the Hyde Park neighborhood. To help promote a healthy lifestyle, Lewis works with students both at Heru Urban Farming and in schools. He is helping create a health curriculum for middle and high school students that is in line with the state learning standards. He notes that farming comes with understandable baggage for the Black community, and one of his goals is to make people more comfortable with the idea. “I taught a class at Better Family Life about the history of certain crops, their health benefits, how they’re grown and ways to cook them,” he says. “By presenting a total picture of the plant, people have a better understanding.” &

COVID’S LONG-TERM EFFECTS

PAST TRAGEDIES TAUGHT US critical lessons that will help

our kids overcome the challenges of the COVID pandemic. The most important: connections and parents’ mental health. My old mentor Dr. T. Berry Brazelton taught me that children often have a delayed response to tragedies like the JFK assassination, school shootings and 9/11. Kids always have a sense of where their parents are emotionally after such events. If they sense that their parents are overwhelmed with emotion, they often hold onto their own feelings. Once they notice mom and dad are back to normal, they can focus on their emotions. Be aware of this coming out of the pandemic. I also have found that kids tend to mirror the adults around them. When I counsel kids who are angry or who fight intensely with their siblings, I encourage parents to look both within themselves for their emotional state as well as the state of their marriage. If they can clean up any inner turmoil or issues in their relationship, the anger in their children often magically dissipates. I believe that how parents handle emotions arising from uncertainties, losses, financial stresses and social disconnection from the pandemic will play a large role in how well their children handle their own adversity due to COVID. Kids tell me that even when they returned to in-person school, people weren’t talking much to each other due to masks and social distancing requirements. But they also admit that they feel more socially awkward. Last summer, I held retreats and camps; we created our own bubble of safety by testing campers and staff. I noticed that once kids had the freedom to connect and play like the good old days, they got back in sync pretty quickly. They are so hungry for authentic connections. Everyone felt so happy to be free and to connect more deeply again. This gives me hope and faith that as the restrictions are lifting, we will return to normalcy with our family and friends. The true extent of any long-term effects from the COVID pandemic will likely take years to measure accurately. In the meantime, do what you can to help kids connect safely with their friends, especially through in-person time. Give kids permission and the tools to express all of their emotions in healthy ways in order to prevent the buildup that can cause anxiety and depression. Parents, take good care of your own emotions, too, so that when you are with your kids, they sense that you are present and able to handle their feelings. Research has shown that the most important factor that allows kids to overcome adversity is having a trusted, loving adult in their corner. Be fully present when you are spending time with your children. And encourage them to have time with other adults who love them, like grandparents or aunts and uncles. Those connections are your best bet for kids thriving now and after the pandemic is long gone. & TIM JORDAN, M.D., IS A BEHAVIORAL PEDIATRICIAN WHO WORKS WITH GIRLS IN GRADE SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE. MY MESSY M M LIFE

WITH KATELYN & THE #CRUMBLYCREW

ANY LAST-MINUTE MOMS LIKE ME out there? I wanted to do a quick spotlight on fun exploring you can do around town. I love the idea of freebird summers with impromptu adventures. And although it’s not always possible with work schedules, if you get an open day with your kids, I want you to be fully prepared to embrace it!

FARM LIFE

Farm School at Sharingwood Farmstead I can’t say enough about this best-kept secret in Wentzville. Owner Allison and her family have set up the most adorable little spot for kids to just be kids and live the slow-pace life on a small farm. She hosts farm school sessions where kids can go weekly to throw axes, run through creeks, feed the animals, milk cows, learn about bees, track a compass through the woods and more. They also host farm days where you can pay a small fee to let your kids be wild and free. She has the coolest kids who are eager to show new friends around. SHARINGWOODFARMSTEAD.COM

ALL AROUND FUN

Brookdale Farms I’ve only heard about Brookdale Farms for weddings, but head to the website, and you will see it's full of adventure beyond private parties. They have endless activities available for families all summer, including mazes, hayrides, inflatables, and what reviews have said to be the most fun float trip (you need to make reservations for that). Its events page lists an upcoming car show, balloon glow and a rodeo! The farm also is hosting various summer camp sessions that still have availability.

COVER STORY

A WARM WELCOME THE GATESWORTH

by julia m. johnson JERRY DAVIS BECAME A RESIDENT of The Gatesworth senior living community last year after moving out of the Richmond Heights home he and his late wife, Marcia, shared for many years. It was an emotional time for him, but he says Gatesworth staff went out of their way to ease the transition and make him feel at home. Davis says he and his daughter toured a few other retirement properties in St. Louis before deciding on The Gatesworth. “It really stood out to me,” he says. “When I first walked into the lobby, it felt like I was entering a five-star hotel. Everything about the community is comfortable and visually pleasing, from the grounds to the decor and furnishings. I had no reservations at all about moving in. Everything just fell into place.” He says Gatesworth staff even made his moving process seamless and stress-free. Move-in coordinator Heather Cox came to his previous home to help determine what would fit in his new apartment, and that eased some difficult decisions about which belongings to keep and which to give to charity. “She took pictures of my furnishings and helped lay out a floor plan for my new home,” Davis says. “My old house had four sofas, so I had to figure out which three to donate, among other things. It was great to have someone with interior design knowledge helping me with decisions like that.”

Davis says The Gatesworth provided him with guest quarters for a couple of days while his furnishings, plants and other belongings were moved in and set up. “The staff put everything in place for me, including pictures and treasured keepsakes,” he notes. “They did all of the heavy lifting. It was such a relief to have every detail covered and not worry about the usual stresses of a move.” He says he is constantly amazed at all of the amenities and activities the community offers. “There is a renowned chef who prepares wonderful menus with daily specials like trout and lamb, or you can cook for yourself at home,” he says. “My favorite menu choices include the Cobb salad, shrimp appetizers and smoked salmon.” Davis adds that whenever he is up for some socializing, there are a number of ways to enjoy himself and interact with fellow residents. “There is live entertainment, music, a fitness center, a saltwater pool, jacuzzi, games and lots of opportunities for relaxation and conversation,” he says. “I love that there is something different to do every day.” Davis says he is such a fan of The Gatesworth that he even agreed to appear in a local television commercial for his new community. “I’m very happy here,” he says. “I always feel comfortable and secure, the staff make me feel like they would do anything for me, and they truly create a homelike atmosphere. They treat my dog as a member of the family, too. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to live.” &

YOU

IN FOCUS

The physical and mental benefits of exercise are undeniable, and it’s important to keep as active as possible at each life stage, but seniors should be especially careful about deciding on a fitness regimen. Safety is paramount, especially since your balance, strength and stamina may not be what they once were. Here are some practical tips to make exercise more manageable as you age.

Have a new doctor, new practice, or new health & wellness business?

Contact TOWN style at sales@townandstyle.com to learn how you can introduce yourself to our curious readers! HEALTH & WELLNESS special sections run in every issue, and all editorial is written by our local staff of professional writers. 314.657.2100

 Workouts don’t need to be long or arduous. Short, moderate-intensity sessions can be very beneficial, and they’re a sensible choice for older adults; the key is to stay consistent with them. Working out in three 10-minute intervals during the day can be just as helpful as exercising for 30 minutes straight.

|

m townandstyle.com

 Exercising from home can be easy and pleasant. Try some quick bouts of activity like stretching or walking briskly around the block to break up the monotony of days spent at home. Even regular pastimes like yard work can double as workouts.  You can work out without spending a lot of money. There are lots of invigorating indoor workouts that don’t require the purchase of heavy equipment. Hand dumbbells, resistance bands and other simple supplies can make exercising at home easy and economical. You even can use items like full water bottles and canned goods in place of weights, and a large, thick bath towel on carpet can serve as an exercise mat.

Refined Residences

 Video classes abound. Pandemic lockdowns proved that almost any program can be adapted virtually. Check out the variety of senior-focused exercise courses available online from trainers, fitness centers and other providers.  If you’re in an exercise rut, try something new. Over time, your body adapts to the physical demands you place on it. If you have been doing the same kind of exercise for a while, try mixing it up by using other muscle groups and increasing resistance levels. Experiment with new routines to give your body and mind a boost.

At the corner of Clayton and Hanley, the first-of-its kind Clarendale Clayton high-rise Luxury Senior Residences place you at the center of it all. Picture your penthouse on the 12th or 13th floor with expansive views or an apartment that’s just your style with a private balcony overlooking the city. This innovative, unmatched community is coming soon!

 Healthy diet is an important part of the plan. Talk to a nutrition professional about your body’s dietary needs as you age. Ask how proper diet and regular exercise can work in tandem for your health.  Know your limits. Exercising later in life should not be about pushing the envelope. Play it smart and safe, listen to your body, and stop for a rest when it tells you to.

It’s where you want to be.

 Get an exercise buddy. Working out can be even more stimulating when you have someone to support and motivate you.  If you feel discomfort when working out, stop and talk to your doctor. Exercise shouldn’t be painful. It always makes sense to discuss a fitness regimen with your physician.

How does exercise benefit the body and mind? - IMPROVES CHOLESTEROL AND BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS - REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE AND BOOSTS CIRCULATION - KEEPS JOINTS HEALTHY AND COMFORTABLE - IMPROVES ENERGY LEVEL AND WELL-BEING - SUPPORTS HEALTHY MOOD AND SLEEP - COMBATS STRESS, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY - FIGHTS BOREDOM - HELPS COPE WITH ISOLATION

SUICIDE PREVENTION

An interdisciplinary team at Washington University has developed a new method to predict the effectiveness of chemotherapy after the first cycle. Combining data from tumor biomarkers, ultrasound and ultrasound-guided diffuse optical tomography, researchers were able to produce highly accurate predictions of how tumors respond to treatment in breast cancer patients. Using this combination, researchers are able to determine if a tumor and its blood vessel network are shrinking. This offers physicians important insights into whether to consider early surgery or alter the course of treatment to improve patient outcomes.

The Missouri Institute of Mental Health at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is leading a new effort to reduce suicide in southeast Missouri. Funded by a $350,000 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health, the Gun Suicide Prevention Planning Project will create a public awareness campaign, build a continium-of-care program for at-risk individuals, and train gun owners and retailers on lethal means reduction. The funds will support two years of planning with additional funding for implementation for up to five years. The initiative is being implemented in Butler County, and researchers have identified six other counties in which to expand their efforts.

A study from Saint Louis University has found that combining two classes of anti-diabetes drugs produces better outcomes for diabetes and fatty liver disease in mouse models. The two drugs have different mechanisms of action, leading researchers to hypothesize that using them together could have enhanced results. Insulin sensitizers counteract insulin resistance, and GLP-1 receptor agonists improve blood sugar levels by slowing the rate the stomach empties and increasing insulin production. Mice who were treated with both classes of drugs saw greater improvement in blood glucose levels than those treated with only one. The study also provided insight into the control of insulin secretion by the pancreas.

TESTOSTERONE AND COVID-19 Researchers at Saint Louis and Washington universities have found that low testosterone in men is linked to more severe cases of COVID-19. The study measured several hormones in patients hospitalized at Barnes-Jewish Hospital between March and May 2020. Low testosterone can be caused by severe illness, and it also is linked to factors like aging, obesity and diabetes. Since researchers did not have pre-COVID-19 hormone levels for patients, it was impossible to determine the cause of the lower levels. Further study is needed to determine if men with low testosterone are more likely to get severely ill when compared to men with normal levels and if testosterone replacement could help in the recovery process.

HOOKED – – BOOKS by patty hannum

In the Middle by Carin Fahr Shulusky While this book is a work of fiction, it clearly could be a memoir as it takes a very realistic look at a woman’s attempt to balance her life as a wife and mother along with being a daughter. For anyone who has ever tried to balance all three roles, you certainly will see your own reflection. The book pulls at your heart as you know there is only one way for this problem to be resolved. A good read for the sandwich generation.

Haven Point by Virginia Hume Don’t be fooled by the cover of this book; it is not a throw away beach read. I read it in one day, it’s that good! It spans three generations of one family, all strong women who lead very interesting lives. It focuses on how choices made last beyond one’s lifetime. Put it on your to-read list.

Girls With Bright Futures by Tracy Debmeier It was only a matter of time before fictional books about the admissions scandal hit the market. I am not sure why I picked this one, but I’m glad I did. It was entertaining and funny in an awful sort of way. You can’t believe that characters like this exist; I am still struggling with ‘Aunt Becky’ paying $500,000 to get her daughter into a college she didn’t want to attend. This book won’t make you any smarter, but it will make you chuckle.

Who Is Maud Dixon? by Alexandra Andrews This thriller already is optioned for a movie, and once you read it, you will understand why. Through every twist and turn, you watch the characters become people you didn’t expect. Interestingly, the title’s question is never answered, but that is no reason to not read this exceptionally written book.

OFF the cuff w/claiborne jon jay

Jon Jay ’s baseball career may have star ted with the Cardinals, but his time in St . Louis was just the beginning. After winning a World Series with the Redbirds, he’s played for teams across the countr y, most recently landing with the Los Angeles Angels. Now, he’s setting his sights on Tokyo and Olympic gold as par t of Team US A . WHAT WA S IT LIKE STARTING YOUR CAREER IN ST. LOUIS? A lot happened for me when I was drafted. Coming from Miami, we don’ t really have a rich histor y in baseball. Working with the Cardinals, I learned more about the game. It was a histor y lesson on the fly. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FELLOW PL AYERS THAT MADE AN IMPACT ? There are so many: Daniel Descalso, Chris Carpenter, Yadi, Alber t Pujols, Skip Schumaker, Carlos Beltrán, Matt Holliday. I’m the veteran now, but I tell people that while I may be the one talking, they ’re getting lessons from 100 different players who have impacted my career and life. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR E XPERIENCE A S AN OLYMPIC QUALIFIER. It ’s been amazing. I really wanted to earn a spot on Team US A . There is a great mix of veterrn players like Edwin Jackson and Marc Rzepczynski and young guys like Jarren Duran and Triston Casas. It ’s good to spend time with all of them. Casas is 21 years old, and he told me he saw me play at the Universit y of Miami when he was a kid. It ’s an unbelievable oppor tunit y to represent our countr y in the spor t of baseball. WHAT ’S ONE THING YOU’ VE COME TO APPRECIATE ABOUT ST. LOUIS? As a father, I tr y to raise my kids to be the best people they can, and I really value how genuine St . Louisians are. It ’s something other players see as well, and they appreciate how they are treated here. Sometimes, other cities and fans can be hostile, but St . Louis is a place where people genuinely care. WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-TRY RESTAURANTS IN ST. LOUIS? I don’ t eat a lot Italian food even though I love it , but Paul Manno’s is my spot . I’m also a big fan of Annie Gunn’s, and my favorite break fast place is Half & Half. I also have to give a shout-out to Simon Lusky at Revel Kitchen.

LOUIS PHOTO: SCOTT ROVAK/ST.

CARDINALS

DO YOU STILL MAINTAIN YOUR SHOE COLLECTION? My collection is doing prett y well. I’ ve always had a passion for shoes; I call them my ar twork . There’s a stor y behind ever y pair, and I prett y much remember how and where I got each one. I’ ve been collecting for a long time, but in the last couple of years, the whole shoe market has really boomed. YOUR GO-TO ITEM IN YOUR CLOSE T. There’s a big Nike Dunks craze. I’ ve skateboarded my whole life, so I was into them before they became popular. I’ ve been bringing out some of my Dunk collection because they ’re trendy right now. WHAT FA SHION TREND WA S NOT A GOOD LOOK FOR YOU? I want to say ever y thing looks good on me, but looking back at photos when baggier clothes were in, I can see a slimmer fit is better.

WHAT ’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’ VE RECEIVED? Don’ t talk about it ; be about it . I learned in high school that hard work pays off. When I was a freshman, I didn’ t make the JV or varsit y teams. I realized I had to commit to getting better. I learned that from my grandfather. He was a hard-working man and led by example for me.

PERSONALIZED MATERNAL CARE SLUCARE PHYSICIAN GROUP

by julia m. johnson HAVING A BABY IS A HIGHLY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, so it should be a

personalized one as well, according to SLUCare certified nurse midwife Carolyn Mank. She helps women give birth in a low-intervention, holistic, supportive environment at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, which has a 14-bed labor and delivery unit. As a SLUCare midwife, Mank holds advanced credentials in nursing and is specially trained to educate women about prenatal care and pregnancy health. She works closely with expectant mothers to help childbirth progress as smoothly as possible, and she cares deeply that the experience should meet a patient’s expectations. Midwife-assisted births tend to be lower-risk pregnancies, but Mank also is certified in the care of women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. If medical complications do arise during labor or delivery, the full resources of SLUCare physicians and the hospital are immediately available, she notes. “Collaboration is the main idea behind the SLUCare midwife practice,” she says. “I work carefully with the patient and other providers to ensure all needs are met.” Mank advises women thinking about having a baby to schedule a preconception visit and then receive regular care throughout pregnancy. “Our staff can perform well-woman exams and help you prepare your body to be pregnant,” she says. “We partner with nutritionists and other providers to discuss healthy weight, diet and activity, and we talk about pre-existing medical conditions as well. Sometimes a pregnancy may be a bit more high-risk, but we can help bring a degree of normalcy to the process so the patient feels confident. It’s my job to give her the information she needs, discuss potential risks and benefits, and empower her to make informed choices about delivery options.”

CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE CAROLYN MANK WITH A PATIENT

She adds that communication is key to the process, and SLUCare practitioners are well versed in educating the patient carefully and compassionately. “Women who have delivered elsewhere in the past sometimes tell me that decision-making processes were not clearly explained to them,” Mank says. “SLUCare practitioners want the patient to be an active participant in her own care. We know how to offer less-invasive solutions that may prevent problems down the line. We also teach women to listen to their bodies’ natural signals and help reduce the chance of complications.” To further personalize care, nurses review current cases each morning, and they are matched carefully with patients preparing to give birth. Mank says the SLUCare midwife practice often incorporates labor-easing techniques like hydrotherapy, walking, yoga ball use, wireless monitoring and other solutions. “Depending on the patient’s situation, it may not be necessary to go straight to pain medication or an epidural,” she says. “We usually can offer options for mothers-to-be who would like a choice.” She says women appreciate the sense of partnership and the comprehensive attention they receive from SLUCare, and patients from diverse backgrounds can feel comfortable considering a midwife-assisted birth. “We are paving the way for women to be more involved in their own care,” Mank says. “Labor and delivery are natural processes, and we can help mothers understand and embrace them.” &

APRONOMICS

STEVE EWING OF STEVE’S HOT DOGS THERE’S A GOOD CHANCE YOU KNOW Steve Ewing for his music. He

is the frontman of The Verge, and he’s also hit the stage solo and with other bands. But it’s equally likely you know him for his culinary pursuits. For more than a decade, he’s been balancing his time performing with his restaurant, Steve’s Hot Dogs. While Ewing always had an interest in food, he never imagined he would be a restaurateur when he was younger. The inspiration for Steve’s Hot Dogs came from his experiences touring. He realized there was a market for great food before and after live events like concerts. “When touring and performing slowed down, I kicked around the idea of starting a food cart to learn about the commercial side of things,” he says. “Hot dogs were the perfect fit. They’re a great street food, and I’d encountered so many hot dog carts around the country. I thought that it was something I could start with.” In 2008, Ewing launched his first hot dog stand. After a year and a half of success, it became obvious that a brick-and-mortar location was a viable option. The first restaurant opened in 2011 on The Hill, and it was followed by a second in Tower Grove East in 2015, which was created in partnership with Tick Tock Tavern. With success, Ewing also learned about the challenges that come with operating a restaurant. In 2019, The Hill location closed its doors, and the Tower Grove East location prepared to close as well at the beginning of February 2020. “Just the idea of closing after 11 years was extremely stressful,” he notes. Thankfully, Danni and Marcus Eickenhorst stepped in to help save Steve’s Hot Dogs. The Eickenhorsts previously had worked with Ewing as consultants, and after witnessing the outpouring of community support for the restaurant when it announced its closing, they were inspired to offer an investment and take on the role of managing partners. “It felt revitalizing to have the Eickenhorsts say they wanted to help resuscitate the business,” Ewing says. “Working with them in the past was a great success, and I was confident with them coming on as partners.” On Feb. 26, less than a month after what was meant to be its final service, Steve’s Hot Dogs was back in business. Shortly after reopening, the restaurant— and all St. Louis eateries—were faced with an unthinkable challenge: COVID-19. The pandemic put a lot of things on hold,

F6 |

TOWN&style

|

JUNE 23, 2021

including any performances Ewing had planned for the year. “We couldn’t in good conscience put on live shows, so I was able to focus on strengthening the restaurant,” he says. Recognizing the serious issue of food insecurity in the community, he launched #FeedThePeople, a giveback program providing meals to first responders and people in need. “When the pandemic hit, we realized there would be a demand for food, and since last April, we’ve been able to get out thousands of meals,” he explains. “We’re just scratching the surface of the problem, but I would love to expand the program.” Ewing says the St. Louis restaurant community came together during the pandemic. He had meetings with other owners to discuss issues as they arose and what solutions had been working. Steve’s Hot Dogs also is known for its collaborations with other local eateries like The Shaved Duck, Adam’s Smokehouse and more. “I love doing these collabs because we need to help and support each other,” he says. “Even though we’re competing in a sense, we all help each other out.” Even with the difficulties of the pandemic, Steve’s Hot Dogs has been thriving. Later this summer, the restaurant is moving down the street to take over the former location of Mangia Italiano. “It’s a well-known spot in Tower Grove, and people have a lot of cool memories about it,” Ewing says. “There’s a killer bar that’s been there for more than a decade. We’re excited to revitalize it and bring back that good energy South Grand is known for.” Along with allowing the restaurant to introduce a new cocktail menu featuring local spirits and beer, the new space offers a much-needed larger dining room and kitchen Ewing is grateful for the support he’s received from the St. Louis community and is proud to continue to be part of Tower Grove South. “The culture and food around South Grand is so great, and the neighborhood is really tight, so you get to know everyone,” he says. “One of the unique things about St. Louis is all of the little neighborhoods with their own unique feel. It’s nice to be a part of that and represent my own little area.” &

Know Your Skin by stephanie wallace

Your skin is as unique as you are. Knowing what it needs—and what it doesn’t—can go a long way toward keeping it healthy and vibrant. We reached out to board-certified SLUCare dermatologist Dr. Mallory Abate to learn how to best care for some common skin types.

DRY

OILY

Your moisture barrier helps protect your skin while keeping moisture in. While genetics can also play a part, Abate says damage to this barrier is the main cause of dry skin. “Patients often ask if their skin is dry because they aren’t drinking enough water,” she notes. “In practice, that is not likely to be the cause. Treating dry skin is all about how much moisturizer you apply to restore the broken moisture barrier.”

“Oily skin occurs because the sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, which is what we refer to as oil,” Abate explains. “It can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts, and the issue also can impact the scalp, resulting in dandruff, hair thinning or even hair loss.” While many people associate oily skin with greasy or unhealthy foods like pizza, chocolate or processed sugar, your sebum levels are primarily determined by genetics and hormones. Oily skin can be difficult to treat, and Abate notes that extreme causes often require prescription medications that target oil glands.

tips for dry skin Don’t take long showers because hot water can draw more moisture from the skin, leaving it even drier and itchier.

• Pick gentle, moisturizing soaps over antibacterial or harsh cleansers, which strip the skin’s natural moisture barrier. “Dry, cracked hands have been an issue this year because of the increased hand washing and use of hand sanitizer,” Abate says.

• Avoid wearing wool clothing, and opt instead for cotton, which

Wash your face every morning, evening and after exercise.

Moisturize with lightweight products. “Heavy moisturizers can potentially seal in more oil,” Abate says. “Choose a lotion that is thin and non-occlusive. Don’t use something like Vaseline or a heavy overnight cream.” Skin care products labeled “oil free” or “non-comedogenic” are good choices because they won’t clog pores or cause breakouts.

is less likely to cause friction and irritate dry skin.

• Use a thicker cream moisturizer rather than a thinner lotion.

“For extremely dry skin, I would suggest an ointment-type product like CeraVe, Aquaphor or even plain Vaseline,” Abate notes. “They may seem greasy, but they restore the moisture barrier.”

Our skin naturally changes as we age. The moisture barrier’s function decreases, leaving skin drier. Bruising can be more common due to the skin becoming thinner. Wrinkles and age spots appear. “Much of the sun damage we receive in our teens and twenties doesn’t become apparent until our 50s,” Abate notes. “It’s often after decades that we see brown spots, precancerous lesions and skin cancer.”

Sensitive skin reacts more to the elements—whether it’s internal like lack of sleep or hormones or external like environmental pollutants or topical products. Abate notes that it commonly manifests in two main ways. “The first is eczema or atopic dermatitis, which makes the skin red and itchy,” she explains. “The second is rosacea, which results in red skin, a burning sensation and irritation.”

tips for mature skin Protect yourself from the sun. “It prevents your skin from aging faster and sustaining sun damage that can lead to cancer,” Abate says. Stay in the shade when possible, wear sun protective clothing and use a broad spectrum sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher daily.

• Change your skin care routine if you’re seeing new issues. Dryness and itchiness may be caused by harsh soaps, fragrances or other irritants.

tips for oily skin

Consult your dermatologist about hormonal acne. “As women age, they can break out on their chin and jawline,” Abate explains. “Instead of the topical acne treatments used in the teenage years, it requires hormone-targeted therapy.” Consider a prescription topical retinoid if you are concerned about age spots or fine lines. Wear compression socks or stockings. “As we age, the veins in our legs become less competent,” Abate says. “Along with swelling and spider veins, this can cause rashes.”

tips for sensitive skin Keep the skin well moisturized. With both rosacea and eczema, the skin’s moisture barrier is compromised. Use skin care designed for sensitive skin. “People with rosacea especially are sensitive to topical products,” Abate notes. “Products can include fragrances and other irritants, so we recommend choosing bland soaps and moisturizers.” Wear cotton clothing and wash your clothes with “free and clear” laundry products if you have eczema. Avoid triggers for rosacea, such as sunlight, overheating, alcohol, caffeine and spicy food. Don’t use anti-aging products if you have rosacea. “Topical retinoids, ingredients like salicylic acid and harsh toners can make sensitive skin more red and irritated,” Abate says.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

GETTING A HANDLE ON ECZEMA BY JULIA M. JOHNSON

Most people with eczema experience it first as children, but sometimes the skin condition appears during adulthood, causing discomfort that can interfere with daily life. PALM Health primary care physician and functional medicine specialist Dr. Karrie Hohn says childhood eczema typically affects the elbows and backs of the knees, while adults usually get it on the hands and face, including the eyelids. “Eczema, also known as dermatitis, causes the skin to be itchy, dry, scaly and red,” Hohn explains. “In the worst cases, it may be open, weeping and blistering. Eczema can feel as uncomfortable as a burn, and it may hurt to move or use the hands because the skin is cracked and painful.” Sometimes irritation occurs when adults have an allergic reaction to poison ivy or oak, or metals found in some jewelry, belt buckles and fasteners on pants. “Other causes include environmental irritants like bleach and detergents,” Hohn says. “Moisture and the chemicals used in printing paper money also can cause problems. Some people also experience worse symptoms with dry indoor air in the winter.” Hohn says adults tend to develop the condition because they are doing something differently than before, like starting a job that requires the use of chemicals or detergents. “You’ve been exposed to a new substance, so your immune system has changed, and your skin starts to react for the first time,” she says. “To treat the condition, it’s important to look at your overall health and lifestyle, then try to avoid repeat exposure and restore the skin’s normal moisture barrier.” If your work involves moisture or chemicals, consider wearing rubber gloves, and if conditions are dry, cotton gloves may be helpful. Some people also benefit from wet-to-dry dressings, like wearing a dry T-shirt over a damp one while sleeping. “This can help loosen the crusting and soothe the skin,” Hohn says.

She recommends trying over-the-counter products like A&D Ointment or Vaseline, which can provide emollients to help restore the moisture barrier. “You also might try a heavy, unscented cream—not a lotion—that is formulated for eczema. Products like CeraVe are made with ceramide, which is helpful, and urea-containing products like Eucerin may be beneficial as well.” Oral antihistamines and daily fish oil capsules may provide additional relief, she notes.

“Environmental or food allergies may be factors, so your doctor may recommend allergy testing to find out what substances are causing problems. A diet that eliminates certain foods may help. Eggs, gluten and dairy are among the most common food allergens.” Hohn says people with chronic gastrointestinal problems like acid reflux, gas, bloating and cramping may be more likely to develop eczema. “If your gut is in a state of imbalance, your skin may respond negatively,” she says. “A good practitioner can examine your whole health picture and address issues like diet that can help improve your skin—and your health in general.” &

SUMMER HOME GALLERY SPECIAL SECTION

RED, WHITE & COOL: July 4th food & drinks By Julia M. Johnson

Who’s ready for some backyard fun? Summer is here, and it’s patriotic party time. Whether you are welcoming a full guest list or just a few friends to the back forty, make your 4th festive with a spread full of colorful bites and beverages.

Delectable drinks

6 Quench your guests’ thirst with a jalapeño-infused spicy watermelon cocktail that also includes lime juice, simple syrup, tequila and mezcal. The unexpected flavor combination provides some punch! 6 Raspberries and lemon always pair perfectly in a pitcher. Try them in a fruity sparkler made with a refreshing rosé and a hint of sugar. Garnish with lemon wedges and floating berries.

Sunny starters

6 Use blueberries, red watermelon chunks and feta cheese cubes to create a fresh appetizer salad in the shape of an American flag. Arrange on a rectangular plate atop a bed of fresh arugula. 6 Ever thought of pairing strawberries and cherry tomatoes? Slice or dice them, mix, and serve as a salad or salsa dressed with chopped green onion, cilantro and vinaigrette.

Classic sides

6 Barbecue traditionalists will gravitate toward baked beans flavored with brown sugar, mustard, molasses, bacon and chili powder. For even heartier flavor and texture, add some cooked, crumbled ground beef. 6 Coleslaw takes a refreshing turn when you stir in lime juice, honey, cilantro and red pepper flakes and

substitute vinaigrette for the mayonnaise. Try chopped red cabbage in place of green for a colorful change of pace.

Enticing entrees

6 Your guests will love customizing their burgers and dogs at a build-your-own bar. Stock it with unusual but flavorful toppings like guacamole, salsa, jalapeño slices, pepperoni, blue cheese, horseradish, sour cream and scallions—and don’t forget the old standbys like tomatoes, lettuce and cheese. 6 Dish up your favorite flavors in the form of barbecued kebabs. Beef and chicken work especially well, and there’s no limit to the marinade combinations you can dream up. Plus, kebabs are easy to cook and serve straight from the grill.

Finishing touches

6 Looking for a light but luscious dessert idea? Fill small mason jars with red-white-and-blue strata in the form of strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, coconut and vanilla Greek yogurt. Garnish with mint sprigs. 6 Wrap up your holiday meal with sweet sandwiches made from homemade waffle wedges and ice cream. Consider creating another build-your-own bar complete with festive sprinkles, sauces, chopped fruit, nuts and chocolate chips.

FROM THE

BLOG OF… KID-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS WHEN YOU HAVE LITTLE ONES AT HOME, sometimes you can get stuck in a rut thinking you have to forgo beautifully styled spaces because they just don’t make sense. We have good news for you: You can have a gorgeous home that also works for your family’s needs. No-Worries Dining Furniture

Stylish Storage Trunks

What’s the easiest way to have a handsome dining table that is also 100% family approved? Rustic, reclaimed table tops and worry-free wood dining chairs. They come pre-dented and worn, so you’ll never have to worry about rogue fork dents or scuffs from Hot Wheels. Dining chairs with full-backs also make it super easy to strap on a booster seat.

For super-storage solutions, trunks are the way to go. From storing toys to extra linens, a trunk is an incredible transition piece that will be as useful during the toddler years as it is in the teens. Rattan options are great because you don’t have to worry about little fingers getting caught by heavy lids.

Small Storage Solutions Baskets and boxes are a parent’s best friend. They can be tucked under tables, into corners and in closets, or left right out in the open. If you’re worried about a space looking cluttered, drape a throw over the edge of your storage soltuions for an instantly curated look. Boxes are great for storing small toys like race cars, marbles or action figures. We love using pretty sets that can be stacked on tables to add height or scattered throughout a room to enhance the decor.

Functional & Fashionable Furniture Favorites If you have climbers, we have a solution. Keep your kids safe with ottoman-style coffee tables, soft-as-can-be hassocks and stylish step stools. Ottoman coffee tables are great for those with kids who always seem to be bumping into things. The soft edges will help to keep bruises at bay and you will be comfortable as you kick your feet up and watch them play. Smaller ottomans and hassocks are great as a pair and can double as extra seating. For kids who love helping in the kitchen, a step stool is a great boost for anyone who might not be able to reach the counter. After all, who doesn’t love an adorable sous-chef?

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING IN UNIVERSITY CITY? It’s an interesting place to be because there are a lot of diverse people. My neighbors have been very kind and helpful. It’s comforting. WHAT INITIALLY ATTRACTED YOU TO THE PROPERTY? I actually moved in last year near the start of the pandemic. I originally was in an apartment complex, but I didn’t feel comfortable. I noticed a lot of “for sale” signs and decided to look into houses. This was actually one of the first I saw online, and I got really lucky with the timing. Interest rates were low, but it was before the market went crazy with everyone buying and selling. I really love this house. It has a lot of character. DID YOU MAKE ANY MAJOR RENOVATIONS? The house was built in 1932, but it has really good bones to work with. There really wasn’t anything wrong with it when I moved in. I updated some of the plumbing and put in new lighting, but the majority of the changes were design. HOW DID THE AGE OF THE HOME AFFECT YOUR DESIGN? The home’s woodwork is really beautiful. I wanted to use colors and pieces that heightened its characteristics. This house also changed the way I approach choosing furniture and decor. In the past, I approached living spaces by essentially walking into a store and buying whatever was on display. That works, but there are so many other options. I worked with Griesedieck Design, and the process introduced me to a lot of different avenues like antique stores and local artisans. HOW WAS WORKING WITH AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? It helped significantly, and overall, the project was really fun. It was great having someone along every step of the way, and it really helped me feel more in touch with the creative process. The space feels a lot more like a home

”... ALL LAYERS OF MY PERSONALITY CAN COME INTO PLAY WITH DESIGN.” THE DOORWAYS ARE QUITE STRIKING. The design was framed around the doorways. I wanted to be able to look into each room and see details like my gallery wall or the antique books on the bookcases. Putting it all together was a labor of love. DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE. Something old, something new. It’s hard to pinpoint just one style. Each room has its own thing going on. My office is more boxy and regimented because I prefer that for a work environment. The living room has brighter colors that help put me at ease. Through this process, I’ve learned that all the layers of my personality can come into play with design. It makes my house feel like a home, not just a space I’m occupying. I think rather than focusing on a single style, we should create spaces we love and want to be in. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ROOM? I love my living room. The beautiful oak of the archway and the woodwork are the focal points. The very first thing I wanted to buy was a green velvet couch to complement the wood tones. It was my starting point, and now, it’s my favorite thing. I love sitting in the living room; it makes me want to have people over. &

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT by stephanie wallace

t This week, it's all abou grandmillennial style!

ASHLEY OBRADOVITS KARR BICK

Ashley’s ’s daughter ! room

What style element are you excited about? I love ‘grandmillennial’ design. It’s like your grandma's style mixed with a modern sensibility. The traditional aesthetic has never gone out of style; it’s just being rediscovered by millennials who are drawn to the nostalgia it gives them for their childhoods. It includes a lot of the design elements I was raised with: scalloped details, ruffles, tassels, pleats, large florals, patterned wallpaper, and heavily adorned bedskirts and ornaments. It’s an explosion of feminine details that rebels against a monochromatic, white-walled look. It’s nice to see design come full circle and these things being appreciated again. What appeals to you about the trend? I’m a very nostalgic designer. I always try to incorporate items that evoke memories and emotions. I recently designed my daughter’s bedroom with elements from my childhood, including the actual chandelier from my room when I was kid. Clients also often have pieces passed down from generation to generation, and I enjoy finding new ways for them to love those pieces with history. How can people incorporate the grandmillennial style into their homes? If you don’t have pieces that fit, garage and estate sales are great places to find them. Some homeowners may find grandmillennial style a little overwhelming, so small changes like recovering a chair or hanging antique china on the wall are good places to start. You can mix some of these key trends with an abstract piece of artwork or a lacquered buffet to throw in some modern and antique elements. Right now, I’m working with a client who wants to incorporate patterned wallpaper. Instead of covering every wall, we’re just putting it on the ceiling. It's a nice surprise when you walk in but not too in your face. You don’t want to go overboard so it looks like Laura Ashley threw up all over your room! Are you seeing any trends on their way out? All-white design is less popular right now. It’s always going to be a nice, clean blank slate, but people are wanting to welcome color back into their lives. As a designer, I find it really refreshing. I get to play more with color, texture and all of the details. How has the pandemic impacted how people approach their homes? Everyone has been sitting at home and sharing work spaces with their family. Rooms with specific purposes and a less open floor plan are becoming popular, and home offices are big. Kids also are more involved in design after spending so much time at home.
