Cara Credit Union dig in to help plant trees for climate change
Cara Credit Union has selected Presentation Primary School as one of the five schools to participate in a project promoting biodiversity and ecological awareness among children in the community. The project, in collaboration with Tralee Bay Wetlands, aims to provide children with knowledge and handson experience in outdoor learning and environmental protection. Through the initiative, the school received trees, fruit bushes, and the expertise of ecologists to improve the school environment for nature and students.
Principal John Hickey expressed
delight in being selected and grateful to Cara Credit Union for their support. The project complements the school’s ongoing work in ecological awareness and sustainable living, which includes a school garden where children grow food, plant habitat spaces, and interact with nature. The support from the Credit Union aligns well with the school’s program, and they look forward to the harvest in the years ahead. The project is part of Cara Credit Union’s commitment to investing in projects that positively impact climate change and enhance
environmental protection. The Credit Union has launched a new Junior Current Account with a Mastercard® debit card for members over 12 to build a budget, save, and manage their account securely. Philip Lynch, Youth Development Cara Credit Union, emphasized the importance of investing in youth as they are the future.
The project was designed with Mary O’Connor from Tralee Bay Wetlands and will benefit a total of five schools initially. The initiative includes a talk for pupils on planting trees, a life-enhancing skill that will benefit
their lives and the school’s natural environment. Tralee Bay Wetlands is pleased with Cara Credit Union’s commitment to pro-active change and their acknowledgment of the biodiversity and climate crises. The other schools selected for this term include Killahan NS, Spa NS, Curraheen NS, and Kilmurry NS. For more information on the Cara Credit Union Junior Account or to become a member, visit their website or one of their branches in Tralee, Castleisland, Killorglin, Ballyduff, or Causeway.
Over €500,000 in funding for Kerry ETB
Minister for Education and Kerry T.D Norma Foley has this week welcomed the announcement of €507,500 in a further education capital grant for Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB).
The devolved capital grant will give Kerry ETB the discretion to make decisions around small-scale FET investment priorities at a local level.
The funding can be used for small scale works including necessary infrastructure and improvement works, and for the purchase of equipment. Funding is provided under Project 2040 and forms part of the ongoing investment in the further education and training (FET) sector.
Using this grant, ETBs will be able to carry out work such
as upgrades to computer labs and science labs, replacement of apprenticeship equipment, roof works and planned improvement works of FET buildings.
Welcoming the announcement today, Minister Foley said: “I am delighted to see this vital funding of over €500k being allocated to Kerry ETB. The devolved capital grant will allow Kerry ETB address a range of small-scale capital needs including minor works and procurement of equipment. Kerry ETB is a crucial education and training facility within the county and this funding will benefit current and future students.”

Coinciding with the clocks springing forward, Kerry County Council is encouraging people of all ages to make the most of the increase in daylight hours and to start to clock up the “Kingdom Kilometres” on foot or by cycling along the county’s two new Greenways.
The recently opened Kingdom of Kerry Greenways between Tralee and Fenit and between Listowel and Abbeyfeale are already proving hugely popular with locals and visitors to Kerry.Representatives of the tourism Industry, local public representatives, travel writers and influencers gathered in Kerry on Monday 27th March 2023 to experience the exciting new tourist attractions and welcome the arrival of the longer daylight hours as the clocks changed over to summertime. Sarah Hanrahan, a social media influencer who posts about Irish travel and has more than 100,000 Instagram followers, described the

Warriors crowned champions after Titanic thriller in Tallaght
Garvey’s Tralee Warriors have been crowned the InsureMyVan.ie Men’s U20 National League champions after defeating Titans of Galway in a thrilling final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Friday night. The Warriors dominated the game for the first three quarters, leading by as much as 24 points, but faced a fierce comeback from Titans in the final quarter. However, the Warriors held their ground and won by six points, securing the League title in a breathless finale.
Both teams traded scores in the opening quarter, with Dan Bowler, Aivaras Ousis, and Gary Lynch scoring for the Warriors and Jackson Soper and Sam Cassidy responding for Titans. The Warriors led 20-15 at the end of the quarter. The
second quarter saw the Warriors extend their lead to 10 points, with Bowler and Ousis landing crucial baskets. Titans responded through Joseph Coughlan, Tommy Burns, Soper, and Brian Gaffney, but the Warriors maintained their doubledigit advantage, leading 39-29 at halftime.
The Warriors started the third quarter with a series of baskets, extending their lead to 24 points. Titans mounted a comeback, but the Warriors maintained their lead, with Ousis, Bowler, and Eddie Sheehy landing key baskets. Titans made a late surge in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors held on to win 71-65. Aivaras Ousis was named MVP, while Eddie Sheehy accepted the U20 National League Cup on behalf of the Warriors. Coach Luke O’Hea, manager Rick Leonard, and the Warriors squad were praised
for their performance.(photos Alan Cantwell )
Duck As Rose Hotel Circuit Of Kerry Honours Go To Monaghan
Moffett Breaks Tralee
Josh Moffett and Keith Moriarty have claimed victory at the 44th Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally, bringing them level with Callum Devine at the top of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship standings. Despite holding second place throughout the day, Devine and navigator Noel O’Sullivan were unable to catch up to Moffett’s unassailable lead. The race for third place was a close one, with Kevin Gallagher managing to hold onto his position despite strong competition from Daniel Barry and Mark Alcorn. As the temperature rose, so did the competition between the crews. Devine managed to close the gap slightly in the final stages but it wasn’t
enough to secure the win for him and O’Sullivan. In the historic category, UK crew Paul McDevitt and Ray Fitzpatrick took first place in their Ford Escort, followed by Welsh pairing Gwyndaf Evans and Jordan Jones in second, and Ian Davies and Gwynfor Jones in third. Junior honors went to Kerry’s Jamie O’Rourke and Patrick Brislane in their Honda Civic, with Monaghan’s Jack McKenna and Damian Doherty coming in second and Limerick’s John Michael Kennelly and Kerry’s John Fleming taking third.

Kerry Schools Team Up With Council to Highlight Dog Foul Problem
Kerry County Council is partnering with local schools to tackle the issue of dog fouling through the Green Schools Programme. Students will patrol areas near their schools, highlighting the prevalence of the problem by spraying any dog faeces found with bright yellow spray paint. The initiative aims to draw attention to the health risks posed by dog faeces and to encourage dog owners to take responsibility for picking up after their pets. Under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, owners who fail to clean up after their dogs in public places face fines of up to €150. Non-payment of these fines can result in penalties of up to €3,000. A similar campaign in Galway led to a 50% reduction in dog fouling. Kerry County Council issued the highest number of fines for dog fouling in 2022.
