G ’D A Y , TRADIES! welcome back to the tradie magazine...
I
t’s great to have you back with us for the June issue of The Tradie. We were stoked to see you loved the new and improved magazine in May and this one is even better!
As I was knocking around the traps searching for awesome gear for this issue, I came across a story that really got me going! There were statistics released recently all about Australian tradies - yep, all about you guys! The research was based around finding Australia’s richest tradies by occupation and location and the results are bloody fantastic, especially if you’re good on the pipes! Now, I won’t say too much, because we’ve got the whole story for you on page 19, but I will say that it must be nice to get some recognition for your hard work as a tradie in this great country! We know you work hard – there are those cold early mornings, constant industry politics and the occasional nagging boss to deal with, and sometimes the money just ain’t enough! We get that and we hope this hilarious read lightens the load a bit!

ast month we sent our team out to hit the streets with The Tradie May, getting them into the hands of tradies everywhere! Phoebe was on the job in Melbourne, delivering the all-new Tradie to Get Real Workwear in Thomastown, L&H Airport West and at Benton’s Plumbtec in Hoppers Crossing. She even took some free hats out for out tradies – what a champion! Aly had delivery duties in Central Queensland, loading up Repco Gladstone, Gladstone Area Group Apprentices and down to our pals at Walz Construction. She also made her way up to the beef capital, getting The Tradie out to Barra Jacks and Supercheap Auto in Rockhmapton! Busy girl, that one! In Sydney, Franco hit the road and stopped by Kennards at Taren Point, L&H Electrical at Taren Point, Coates Hire at Hillsdale, North Shore Timber at Waterloo and Plumbers Supplies in Rosebery.

INDIGENOUS ITRADIE PROGRAM BUILDS FUTURES After six days of TAFE, followed by a nightly program of life coaching activities, the Aboriginal Employment Strategy’s (AES) iTRADIES program in Western Sydney wrapped up last May, giving participants one of the most challenging and impactful weeks of their lives. When you talk to iTRADIES Program Coordinator and AES National Construction Manager, Rohan Tobler, he’ll tell you that it’s these types of moments that reveal just how unique the iTRADIES program is; and most significantly, why it’s achieving 90 per cent completion and retention rates and putting Aboriginal people into jobs and keeping them there. “You can imagine a young person taking that mentality into the workplace - being proud and focused on a career goal, all because they know who they are for the first time ever.” Rohan’s concept for the iTRADIES was inspired in part by an earlier initiative (Koori Job Ready), which he helped coordinate.

he end of financial year has rolled around again and we’re not going to lie, it sucks there isn’t a party to go with it. While tax time can be a pain in the backside, it doesn’t mean you have to give Friday arvo bevvies the flick to do the books. Terry Howard from ITR Queensland gives us his top ten tax tips… 1.
If there’s one thing tradies are good at, it’s fixing stuff. But how good are you at paperwork? Instead of struggling over receipts and statements at the end of the day, get on board with ITR’s cloud-based Xero accounting program and put an end to the filing!
2.
You know what’s really fun? Heading home after a long day and typing out invoices on your computer, or wading through the hand-written ones! Forget about that and generate invoices on the spot at your job by using your phone or tablet - job done, there and then!
3.
Quarterly BAS returns generally scare the life out of most people. Did you know you can be fined up to $900 per BAS that is late or remains unlodged? That’s a whole lot of fishing gear down the drain! ITR Queensland’s extended lodging schedule gives tradies an extra month to get the job done – phew!
4. If you use your private car for work like most tradies do, the tax deduction for vehicle use during work duties can be many multiples of the good old ‘cents per kilometre’ calculation. It’s worth keeping a log book for three months to capture the percentage of business use to see what it does for your tax refund or bill at the end of the year. 5. Who is your least-favourite person alongside the tax man? We know - the insurance man! We all hate paying insurance bills and many insurances are

f you’re sitting on a job site in Western Australia and the plumber is around, grab that lucky bugger and make it his shout for lunch! Why? Because it’s just been revealed that he is number one on the list of Australia’s wealthiest tradies this year.
While the lowest earning on the rich list drops in value slightly each year, number ten still sat at $68.58 per hour in 2016 for plumbers in Queensland; and while plumbers in the west did top the list, their average hourly rate has dropped by just over 9 per cent since 2015.
ServiceSeeking.com.au has gathered the stats on the Tradie Rich List based on 52,000 quotes submitted to the website in the last year. It includes hourly rates and trade professions by location.
Despite the end of the mining boom in WA, second on the list are the state’s electricians, earning $87.33 per hour; and builders in New South Wales come in third at $77.85 per hour, up almost 30 per cent from last year. T

IT’S STUPID TO BE UNSAFE
a Kahi Puru was 29 when his body was crushedkein forklift accident on site, So how does a blo overcome something so horrific?
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOB BEFORE THE ACCIDENT?
THERE’S NOTHING FUNNY ABOUT AN ACCIDENT LIKE THIS, BUT HAS ANYTHING EVER HAPPENED TO YOU BECAUSE OF YOUR LOSS THAT WAS TOTALLY HILARIOUS? I laugh about this all the time! It’s interesting when you have an obvious disability to see how people react. Most people will stare and others will try to ignore you. My favorite, though, are the kids! They’ll run right up to me in the middle of a mall and shout “hey, what happened to you?” and this cracks me up! At first it makes all the adults uncomfortable but I look at it as an opportunity to raise awareness. I respond by telling them a story about not looking both ways before crossing the road or not listening to my parents. I try to bring the idea of safety to terms they can understand. This is great because it usually opens up a dialog with the parents as well.
IF YOU COULD SAY ONE THING TO OUR TRADIES ON SITE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I was driver and operator of an industrial vacuum truck that collected and transported toxic waste. I’d been on the job for eight months and our shifts started at midnight and went for over thirteen hours.
Be vigilant and protective! Record your near misses to create awareness and be the most aware during your first and last 10 minutes of the day - safety doesn’t stop until you leave the shop! T
WHAT WAS SAFETY LIKE ON SITE IN THE 90’S? I have a military background so I had extensive safety education, but back then things weren’t monitored to today’s standards. In most cases there was a lot of initial safety training when first starting a job, but once you were out in the workforce things got very relaxed.
TELL US ABOUT THE ACCIDENT… I was putting away the vacuum hoses at the end of a shift and as I shutdown the machinery and stepped off of the back of the truck a forklift operator was driving in my direction who I didn’t see, and obviously he didn’t see me either. I was caught by the forklift and dragged under it for several meters. I can’t recall the specifics because I was knocked unconscious.
WHAT IMMEDIATE EFFECT DID IT HAVE ON YOUR LIFE? I woke up in hospital in the intensive care unit with several injuries to my body, including a fractured skull and my left leg had been removed at my hip. At first I went

through what most amputees go through - I was afraid and unsure if I wanted to live. Once I saw my family though, I knew there was a lot to live for. Things would be different, but I knew I would adjust and overcome it. I didn’t have a choice, life has to continue on and so did I!
LONG-TERM, HOW DID IT AFFECT YOU? At the end of the day this whole experience made me a better person. I began to understand that things happen in life but it really does depend on how you choose to react to them and this has motivated me. First, I began working on myself and I

RED BACK BITES BACK A 21-year-old apprentice was bitten on the penis by a redback spider in an on-site portaloo in Sydney’s South last May. The man said he was sitting on the toilet early that morning when he felt a big sting on the area and then saw the spider crawling back into the seat, which is when he figured out what had happened. While it might seem ideal to some, the man said his penis became noticeably bigger, so he became concerned and called emergency services straight away, who told him to stop blood flow to the area while he made his way up to the hospital. Good morning, indeed! The man was released from hospital with the all clear later that day.
face first A Tasmanian tradie took a tumble falling facefirst from a ladder onto a concrete driveway in 2008. The man was helping friends with repairs at their home, working from a ladder which was on a concrete path next to a carport, which didn’t reach the height of the roof. The man sued the homeowners, claiming damages for negligence and breach of contract and statutory duties and was recently awarded $1.1million! Despite his decision to unsafely descend the ladder facing forward, it was declared by the judge that it was reasonably foreseeable that any person using the ladder could’ve fallen and been injured as a result.

A 19-year-old Sydney bloke was injured at a house in St Clair in the city’s west after his scrotum became caught in a handheld electrical grinder last May (ouch!). As you can imagine, an ambulance was called straight away for the poor lad and he was transported to Nepean Hospital in a conscious and stable state. What a trooper! The man has declined to make a comment and has kept a low profile since the incident. T

TRICKY TRADIES HOW DID THIS ALL START FOR YOU? I’ve been a Mad Max fan since I was about ten years old, but as a young Yarra Valley tradie establishing a landscaping business, my would-be Interceptor was sacrificed for a work ute. It was about 13 years ago, with the business on the go that I resurrected the dream and bought the ’74 XB and it wasn’t beautiful, but it was black!
Peter Axford is a legendary landscaper with a very successful business. He’s also a Mad Max fanatic, which has powered his desire to create his very own Interceptor…

My business is Coolabah Commercial Landscapes and I’ve been landscaping for over 30 years. We do domestic work but about eight years ago we got involved in constructing really cool playgrounds for schools and government commercial works. It’s been great - the imagination can really run wild with feature ideas like granite rock trucks,
TELL US ABOUT THE CAR – WHAT CRAZY ADDITIONS HAVE YOU MADE? I bought the car on the internet. It was pretty run-down and bad-looking, but I’d loved Mad Max since I was a kid and my whole life plan was to get one of these cars. It was just something I had to do! I took it back to the base and had it resprayed before fitting the full Mad Max body kit. The 671 blower on the bonnet, the flares, nose cones and the Scott injector hat were shaped from the original moulds. Inside there is an original overhead CB radio on the console and a 460 Big Block engine gives the grunt that Mad Max fans expect when the bonnet goes up.

and motorbikes, and teepee’s. The work is so creative and satisfying.
AND YOU’RE MAKING A MAD MAX DOCUMENTARY AS WELL? WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE WANTING TO BUILD A CUSTOM CAR LIKE THIS? If you have the passion to build a Mad Max car then absolutely follow your dream. It’s worth every bit of it! There are many Mad Max sites that lead you to the right people, parts and advice, including my friend, Peter Robinson, who has a Melbourne-based workshop dedicated to building Mad Max cars.
Yes, over the last 12 months we’ve been working with True Blue Films making a documentary called “Myths and Facts: Mad Max 1” and it’s based on all of the actual facts relating to the 1979 Mad Max movie. It will have interviews with actors, crew and stuntmen who tell us about their experiences and reveal the truth on so many myths of the Mad Max movie over the past 37 years! We’re expecting it to be out later this year.

doing something that’s moderately physical. Over the years we’ve done things to combat the heat, though. A cool suit is mandatory and it pumps iced water though a vest under the race suit to keep the core cooler, and there’s also fresh, cool air going into helmet.
WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT ON THE DAY AT IPSWICH? You really get the luxury of being able to see the whole circuit at Ipswich, which is a lot more than you’ll see on TV. Fans can also come out on the race track and see the parked cars and talk to the drivers.
IT’S A V8,
MATE! Jason Bright is a V8 Supercar veteran and what a title that is! Since the age of 15 Jason has been flogging around race tracks in some seriously cool whips. He is currently the lead driver of Brad Jones Racing, alongside teammates Tim Slade and Tim Blanchard, and he’s a pretty big deal in the industry as one of the oldest drivers in the premier race!
W
e sat down with Jason ahead of the V8 Supercars SuperSprint coming up in Ipswich this July…
YOU’VE HAD A PRETTY DECENT CAREER SO FAR, HOW DID YOU GET INTO PROFESSIONAL RACING? My dad is a racing nut, so I grew up following motorsport. I went to races with him and grew up wanting to be like the racing heroes of the time. I started in go karts and progressed from there. I was in a position to pick up professional drives from around 24 years old.
WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING IN CONTROL OF A V8 SUPERCAR? It’s exciting because it’s such good, close racing when you’re out there with 25 other guys on a track like Ipswich. There’s a lot of strategy that goes into it, especially at every passing, which is usually a challenge.
While there are some freedoms, the rules are generally tight - They try to make sure teams that have more money can’t just go and buy faster equipment. We all have a similar horsepower, the same tyres, the same car and the same driver weight.
TELL ME ABOUT THE CAR YOU’LL BE DRIVING FOR THE IPSWICH SUPERSPRINT? It’s a Holden Commodore 5 litre V8 with a 6-speed sequential gearbox, on Dunlop tyres. The car weighs 1410kg, which is about 500kg lighter than a road car. We don’t run anything [in the car] that isn’t necessary, so things like the radio and air conditioning are completely taken out.
SO IT MUST GET PRETTY TOASTY IN THERE? It’s generally 20 to 30 degrees hotter in the car than what it is outside. On top of that, we’re wearing a 3-layer race suit and are
IT’S RISKY BUSINESS HANDLING THESE CARS – WHAT’S THE CLOSEST CALL YOU’VE EVER HAD? My worst crash was in America, racing at Indy Lights. I hurt my back which was a shock the system, but when they said I was going to be okay, my first thought was wondering when I can get back in the car! I checked myself out of hospital the next morning and went to the track. I wasn’t allowed to race, though - I should have stayed in hospital for another week!
YOU HEAD TASKFORCE.COM.AU – WHAT’S THE LINK BETWEEN YOU AND THE TRADIE WORLD? I am a qualified fitter and turner and I think the concept for Taskforce.com.au came from seeing a lot of tradies around with their own businesses, but realising that none of them worked together. Taskforce.com.au helps them do this and also gives them joint buying power. We’re also a franchise so tradies can operate under our brand and we can assist them with lead generation and things like that. T

ST TOOL TE tester, knocka! by the tradie’s resident tool
TOOL BOX MS SEALANT AND ADHESIVE:
KNOCKA
• Has sticking superpowers, clinging to COLORBOND unlike any other product • Water, mould and UV resistant • Has instant grab capability, meaning once it’s stuck on, it’s stuck! “This month I had a crack at testing the Tool Box MS Sealant and Adhesive from HB Fuller and it’s a Tool Box, indeed! This is one of those products that does many dif ferent jobs all in one tiny tube. And you read right, this is an MS product, or Modified Silicone, making it a leader in our field! What dif ferentiates this beauty from the rest is that it’s paintable with most water-based paints. Pesky paint doesn’t stick to a majority of products, so this is great, especially as an all-around adhesive product. Not only will it cling with paint, but it’ll also stick to moist sur faces and has the ability for indoor and outdoor applications. This means it’s ef fective in sealing areas like gutters and air-conditioners - those spots where it can be damp, where other sealants won’t cooperate! I also found it useful behind external power points to stop moisture running down into the socket, because it’s always handy avoiding an electrical hazard! The Tool Box itself also comes in a range of colours like black, grey, translucent and white, and it’s resistant to salt and chlorinated water. This product is formulated for Aussie conditions, so it’s good for pool areas, outdoor spots or roof tiles – it’s also mould and UV resistant. While it remains somewhat water-resistant, this product isn’t recommended for work involving constant water submersion or structural bonding. Keeping that in mind, it doesn’t eat away at sensitive substrates, like polystyrene. The instant grab strength is something to brag about. In fact, if trying to tear of f COLORBOND, you will actually tear apart the glue before it will remove from the COLORBOND. Tool Box still holds flexibility, though, so it’ll stretch and move per fectly for expansion and ceiling joints. Stomp Tool Box into the ground too, if you need to. It’s traf ficable and can go in the ground, holding strength with foot traf fic and making it ideal for between tiles and concrete. The builders will be pleased to know it’s also a lot more environmentally friendly than a polyurethane and other regularly used as sealants. It’s an A+ from me!”

BEER SNOB
HE’S BACK AT IT AGAINRY–! BAZ AND HIS BEER SNOBBE
ROBUST PORTER BY BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS
STOUT BY HARGREAVES HILL BREWING COMPANY This is a hefty Stout coming in at 6.2% from Hargreaves Hill Brewing in Yarra Glen, Victoria. Hargreaves began brewing in 2004 and over the years have built a loyal following with their quality beers and the excellent food available at their restaurant. This beer pours up black with a creamy, tan head. The aroma and taste is a dark bitter chocolate, sweet dark fruits, coffee, tobacco, herbal and spicy hops, roasted malt; and slight sweetness from the alcohol. The carbonation and body are perfectly in balance. This is a warming and enjoyable Stout that goes great with a hearty beef stew or game meats - perfect for a cold winter’s night.

Bridge Road Brewers of Beechworth in Victoria have been brewing since about 2005 and have a built up a fanbase who love their bold beers. This is a great example of a Robust Porter they seem to improve on every year. It pours up almost black with a touch of red colour on the side of the glass. The aroma is big, with chocolate, mocha, coffee, dark fruits and bread flavours. The taste is almost the same as the smell. The key to this beer is how smoothly it all comes together – there is a great balance of sweet and savoury flavours that are rich in body, yet finish dry enough to make you want to keep drinking more

This lucky bugger has had a busy month sampling beers from around the world to give you some of his top picks for your weekend! Always doing us favours, that lad!
SUPER CHARGER AMERICAN PALE ALE BY PANHEAD BREWERY This is an excellent example of an American Pale Ale from New Zealand’s Panhead Brewery. This beer took out New Zealand’s 2015 Beer of the Year at the annual SOBA awards and it’s easy to see why as you pour this brilliantly clear golden to light orange coloured beer into a glass and smell it. There is a huge fresh hop aroma that pours out of the glass with mango, grapefruit, lemon, lime, sativa, herbs, tangerine and oranges. The taste follows through the same as the aroma - big, juicy fruit, candy, herb and dank flavours, all mixed together on a solid malt back bone. The carbonation and body are perfect and really help to make this beer dangerously drinkable at 5.7% - get some!
HOPCO NZ PALE ALE BY PIRATE LIFE BREWING This Pale Ale from Pirate Life Brewing features all New Zealand Hops from Tasmanian hop suppliers, Hopco. It pours up golden and bright with a lively head. The smell is all hops with plenty of fruit, herbal and pine aroma. The taste is not as hoppy as the smell and is more balanced with a biscuit/toast malt flavour coming through strong. Mint, pine, lime, lemon and herbal hop flavours are in there as well and the bitterness is assertive but not overpowering. It has a medium body with a dry lingering finish - this is an interesting take on a Pale Ale!
BAZ
NOONER PILSNER BY SIERRA NEVADA This is a take on the classic German Pilsner style from a classic American brewery, Sierra Nevada. Sierra always produce highly drinkable beers that make you want more than one pint and this beer is no exception! It pours up bright and crystal clear with a golden colour and nice looking head and the aroma is floral and spicy hops with light bready malt. The taste is a background of bread, grain and cracker malt flavour and hops are assertively bitter with spicy flavour. The carbonation is medium and the beer finishes dry. Everything is well balanced leaving you wanting another sip great Pils! T

>> be improved? industry in Austra
LENNY SALVAGGIO “Get rid of bosses who force their workers to operate on an ABN so they don’t have to pay holidays, and get rid of the builders and union representatives that let it happen all the time!”
BRAD SAUL “These tradie shows are killing the industry, making tradesmen work 15-hour days and making out they do nothing! Plus there are too many rules and regulations. When I was a kid I was on site with my dad when he was laying bricks and that’s when I found a love for the industry. The tradesmen should also be paid what they’re worth and no bricklayer should have to work for anything less than $1 per brick. It’s worse now than it was 15 years ago, getting around 75 cents per brick - what a joke!”
JAI WEST “Get rid of Australian TV shows that are renovating a home in one week! They’re making tradies look slow and useless when we are doing the job correctly and according to code, and take longer than a week!”
BRAD ROBB “Get rid of bosses who don’t hold up their end of the EBA, it’s disgraceful!”
PHILLIP MELVILLE
IN RESPONSE TO GRAHAM DOOLEY
“Have foremen with a trade background, not just a Construction Management Degree from Uni.”
“I agree, a hard working Aussie tradie could probably run our country with one arm behind his back!”
GREG BUCKLEY
BLAKE HANSEN “Ensuring that any worker on a building site has the right to work in Australia would be a good start. I witnessed float being done by 15 guys and only one of them could understand English. I’m not racist, but I can guarantee they don’t have an ABN, TFN or are covered by insurance. That puts pressure on the rest of the industry doing the right thing to compete with illegitimate workers by lowered standards, lowered conditions and unrealistic deadlines on projects. Project builders should also be forced to put aside monies to pay their contractors and subcontractors into a trust, or give some form of guarantee, to ensure the people actually doing the work are covered.”
PAM WILSON
GRAHAM DOOLEY “Put a tradie as PM!”

IN RESPONSE TO BLAKE HANSEN “Right idea, wrong entities. To solve the issue, banks and developers should have to provide a guarantee of funds in a trust that sees the principal contractor paid in the event of a developer or project being put into receivership and/or liquidation. Builders are just the principal contractors that the money goes through. Builders are not the financiers and they do not have the margins the developers have. A builders profit margin is much lower than a developers, yet they are assuming much greater risk in many cases. You will find most builders’ collapses are either due to no- payment from developers or banks pulling their support financially to various projects due to poor sales or revaluations that sees the developer having to unexpectedly fund more of the project themselves. The only problem is, the developer often doesn’t have the funds to do so, so the bank assumes possession of the project and takes advantage of all unpaid work onsite, which they don’t pay for, as they say the developer and builder are responsible. They then sell or complete the project with other subcontractors and/or another builder. This practice should be illegal. The bank or developer must be held accountable and protection for all contractors should be put in place, including the builder. “
