Welcome Aboard W

elcome aboard your flight today with Skippers, our dedicated crews will make your journey as comfortable as possible throughout these winter months. The Government has advised that the subsidised Kimberley Air Service routes for Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek are to cease by 30 June, 2016. Skippers has undertaken to continue services to Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek, departing at 9.30am each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, coinciding with incoming aircraft to Broome. Flights will then depart Halls Creek at 3.45pm and arrive back into Broome at 5.30pm to coincide with outgoing aircraft from Broome. This will occur over a trial period of 3 months and if there is sufficient support for the service, it will continue. Communities in regional destinations are encouraged to embrace their airline provider and be aware of comparisons in airfare pricing between local and international destinations. For example, holiday locations like Bali welcome 8,000 people per week, whereas some local holiday destinations are down to 40 people per week. Also, a friendly reminder, that any travel agent that has a SABRE GDS has the ability to book Skippers flights through their system. Please also note, our new IATA Designator is now HK. All customers should also be aware that we are the only operator of the F100, carrying 108 passengers. These are available for contract or charter. QUEENSTOWN AND WANAKA, NEW ZEALAND Queenstown and Wanaka are each within an hour’s drive of each other and bridge four ski resorts and a specialist ski area, offering a New Zealand skiing holiday like no other. Queenstown is known as the ‘adventure capital’ of New Zealand and is a popular year-round tourist destination, but there’s extra magic when the snow falls, attracting skiers, snowboarders and thrill-seekers to enjoy world-class ski areas, a buzzing après ski culture and a multitude of off-piste adventures and activities.

The region is increasingly popular with Australians and this year’s winter season influx will see 50 direct trans-Tasman flights arriving into Queenstown each week. Many of these visitors also come to experience Queenstown’s iconic winter festivals like the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival and DNA Gay Ski Week.

When the snow begins to fall, the alpine town of Queenstown transforms into a winter wonderland, reminiscent of a picturesque European ski resort town. A short drive from Queenstown is the more relaxed, but equally beautiful small resort town of Wanaka gateway to the magnificent Mt Aspiring National Park. Queenstown and Wanaka both offer a base for young-snow-lovers, couples wanting to experience a slice of southern romance; and families looking to make longlasting memories enjoying awe-inspiring scenery and Kiwi hospitality. The closest ski field to Queenstown is Coronet Peak. This much-loved local haunt is a 25-minute drive from downtown Queenstown and has recently undergone a multi-million dollar transformation. A 45-minute drive from Queenstown is The Remarkables mountain range. In name and in nature, The Remarkables are just that. The alpine terrain, north-facing slopes, dedicated learning area, lessons, kids club and free day lift passes for under 10s make this ski-field a great place for families and novices to get their first taste of a fun-

packed snow adventure. For those wanting to experience something a little different, Treble Cone’s legendary long uncrowded slopes, off-piste terrain and views offer a Kiwi snow experience on the biggest ski area in the South Island. All of this is just a 35-minute scenic

lake front drive from Wanaka. Cardona Valley is located between Queenstown and Wanaka and has two ski areas - Cardrona Alpine Resort and Snow Farm - where on-snow winter activities extend to snow and ice driving on a dedicated race track, backcountry overnight snow mobile tours, dog sled rides, snow bikes and snow shoe adventures. Cardrona Alpine Resort caters for everyone, from first-timers and families, to experienced skiers with abundant wide-open trails that meander across three bowls, as well as a world class terrain park and comprehensive children’s facilities including four centres and slopes dedicated to under-fives. For up-to-the-minute snow reports for The Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Cardrona and Treble Cone; or for information on accommodation and upcoming events, visit Queenstown.com. n

estern Australia was announced as the world's most attractive mining investment destination in the Fraser Institute's 2015 Survey of Mining Companies in March. Department of Mines and Petroleum Director General Richard Sellers said Western Australia also finished in the top ten across a number of other categories. “As well as being the number one ranked jurisdiction for mining investment, WA also ranked first in the Best Practices Mineral Potential Index,” Mr Sellers said. “Our geological database was ranked third and we ranked eighth on the Policy Perception Index. This was the State’s best performance in the internationally respected survey.”

class quality of WA’s geoscience information and the role it plays in encouraging investment in mining exploration,” Mr Sellers said. In announcing the survey results, then Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion also praised Western Australia’s performance.

Mr Sellers said the department’s program of reforms were central to ensuring Western Australia’s place as a world-leading mining jurisdiction.

"There is never a bad time to be the world's best, but it is particularly important at this stage in the resources cycle," Mr Marmion said.

“It is also indicative of the world-

"The benefits of our worldleading Mining Rehabilitation Fund are also flowing through, cutting costs and encouraging rehabilitation, after returning $1.1 billion to the industry from the old bond system."

"What really hits home are quotes from industry, praising the streamlining of landmark mining projects that are now supporting major employment."

Mr Marmion said while red tape reduction and innovation had boosted resources industry confidence, it had not compromised safety or environmental standards.

The 1916 Brockman map features in Mapping Western Australia: State geological maps 1894–2015.

T

he first new geological map of Western Australia since 1998 was officially launched by Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Marmion at the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) Open Day at the Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle on Friday, 26 February. The flagship product of the GSWA is the culmination of 15 years’ work that has dramatically reshaped how the survey delivers its geoscience data and products. The map has 1:500,000 scale spatial accuracy across Western Australia and is the first to be entirely digitally compiled rather than assembled by hand using pre-existing maps, and then digitised to create the final product. The map has been produced about every eight years since 1894. However, annual or bi-annual updates to its 1:500,000 and 1:2,500,000 digital datasets will now ensure that the State map is always current, eliminating the long delays in the release of new data in the past. The new map has been published 100 years after the Survey’s least known map of Western Australia was compiled by Acting Surveyor General Frederick Slade Brockman. Only one copy exists today. It is badly torn and large tracts of the interior are blank spaces with no interpretation (see image). The Brockman map, and fascinating stories behind every other map drawn by the survey since 1894, features in the book Mapping Western Australia: State geological maps 1894–2015, which was launched at the open day alongside the new State map.

The launch of the new map was accompanied by the release of the Explanatory Notes System (ENS) search tool on GSWA’s state-of-theart geoscientific web application, GeoVIEW.WA. ENS is a digital repository that integrates lithostratigraphic units within the digital map layers with links to all tectonic units and geological events recognised in Western Australia. ENS will build into an online virtual book, providing a scale-less and seamless, continuously updated summary of the geology of Western Australia. n

Exploring Beyond Six O’clock

T

he hand of the Lion Selection investment clock turned to 6 o’clock, or “BOOM”, in May. Some of Lion Selection’s evidence for this movement is that ASX gold companies have been the best performing sector on the ASX in 2016 – up 68 per cent year-to-date - and that miners have raised money in the market and issued paper for assets or takeover targets. Peta Libby, Managing Director of Western Australia’s premier geological contracting company Digirock, confers with Lion’s assessment and notes that demand by gold producers for Digirock’s contracting services is the best the company has seen in four years. Libby adds that since January 2016 demand from junior explorers for Digirock’s bootson-ground geologists and field technicians has also increased, but most surprisingly for her is the three-fold increase in requests for their Exploration-on-Line safety systems and procedures. These requests for safety systems are evidence that the sector has evolved since the last boom with a better understanding of the physical, emotional, financial and lost opportunity costs of safety incidents. WA IS PROMOTED AT MAJOR

ASIAN INVESTMENT CONFERENCE

T

here's never been a better time to invest in Western Australia…

That’s the message Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) Director General Richard Sellers delivered last month to Asia’s biggest mining investment conference and exhibition in Hong Kong. Mr Sellers led a DMP team to Mines and Money Asia 2016 that included Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) Executive Director Dr Rick Rogerson and Mineral Promotion Manager Gaomai Trench. The Director General said that Western Australia’s recent stellar ranking in the Fraser Institute's 2015 Survey of Mining Companies as the world’s most attractive mining investment destination was a great help in promoting the State.

Mr Sellers, who presented a keynote address, told the audience that gold and nickel deposits in Western Australia had been proved up, gained permits and begun producing within four years of discovery. “Where else in the world can you do this,” he asked the international audience. Mr Sellers said that although times were currently tough in the resources sector, the global stock market downturn presented investment opportunities because sellers were keen, labour was cheaper and costs were being cut. The Director General said that there were currently more than 120 significant mining and exploration projects in WA with Chinese investment.

“China is already investing in Western Australia’s uranium exploration sector and four uranium deposits are at the pre-feasibility or feasibility stage,” he said. The DMP team’s itinerary included a tour of China General Nuclear Power Group’s Dayawan Nuclear Power Station in Guangdong Province, meetings with senior executives of CITIC Australia, GOGC Petroleum (China) Ltd, the China Minsheng Bank, and a visit to Sinosteel Corporation in Hong Kong. 0 June is rapidly approaching and it’s time to do some urgent tax planning. Dr Adrian Raftery, a senior lecturer in tax, financial planning and superannuation at Deakin University and finance author, gives some excellent tips for you to action and maximise your tax refund this year. 1. KEEPING A CAR LOG BOOK COULD INCREASE YOUR REFUND BY THOUSANDS

“Great accountants are like surveyors - they know where the boundaries are, and their fees are tax deductible! “

If you use your car for work and keep a log book for 12 weeks, the deductions can be in the thousands. Make sure that you keep all costs associated with the running of your car (such as petrol, insurance, registration, servicing and lease payments) for the whole year, not just the period that you kept the log book. Remember, the ATO’s motto is ‘no receipt = no deduction’, so you could be costing yourself money by not keeping those dockets! 2. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE GOVERNMENT’S FREE MONEY SERVICE KNOWN AS THE “SUPER COCONTRIBUTION” It is surprising how few people actually take advantage of free money from the Government. If your income is under $35,454 and you contribute $1,000 post tax into super the government will match it at 50 cents in the dollar. Whilst this incentive gradually phases out above this figure at $50,454, it’s free money! Also, if you earn less than $10,800 then your spouse can put up to $3,000 into your super fund and they will receive an 18% rebate ($540) on tax via the spouse super contribution rebate. 3. MINIMISE CAPITAL GAINS TAX (CGT) BY DEFERRING SALE OR OFFSETTING LOSSES AGAINST GAINS ALREADY MADE The share market has had a roller coaster year in 2015/16. If you made a nice capital gain or two earlier in the year then you can reduce CGT by selling any non-performing shares that you may be currently holding. Any unrealised gains should be sold after 1 July to defer tax for another year. And remember, if you hold shares for more than 12 months you reduce CGT by half. 4. BUILD YOUR NEST EGG QUICKER BY PAYING 15% RATHER THAN 49% BY SALARY SACRIFICING INTO SUPER Salary sacrificing into superannuation is one of the best and legitimate ways to minimise your income tax bill. You can contribute up to $30,000 per year into super ($35,000 for those aged 50 and over) which is only taxed at 15 per cent instead of your marginal tax rate (potentially 49 per cent). There are not many pay packets left to do it this tax year, so remember to start putting extra away when 1 July arrives.

portion of home telephone, internet, stationery, computer equipment and printers. Keep a diary of your time that you work from home and claim a 45 cents per hour deduction for electricity, gas and depreciation of homebased furniture. 8. BUY A NEW BUSINESS ASSET FOR UNDER $20,000 AND CLAIM IT AS A TAX DEDUCTION THIS YEAR There have been some great tax concessions over the past few years for small businesses (up to $10M turnover), with none greater than the immediate write-off available for the purchase of new business assets that cost less than $20,000. There is no limit to the amount of assets that you can purchase under this concession but beware that you are only getting a percentage back and your cash flow will suffer. If your business is registered for GST, then you can buy a business asset for less than $22,000, claim the 10% GST credit and get an immediate write-off for the balance in this year’s tax. 9. KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS With the ATO continuing to ramp up their audit activity yet again it is important that you keep your receipts. The ATO motto is no receipt = no deduction so you could be costing yourself $$$ by not keeping those dockets!

5. INCOME EXPECTED TO BE LOWER NEXT YEAR? BRING SOME 2016/17 EXPENSES FORWARD INTO THIS YEAR

10. GET A GREAT ACCOUNTANT

If you are expecting that you will have a lower income next year - due to factors such as maternity leave, redundancy, a smaller bonus or perhaps cutbacks to overtime - then why not try to bring forward your deductions into this tax year. Stocking up your home office with stationery, laptops and printers or prepaying subscriptions and interest for up to 12 months in advance are just some of the simple ways to reduce your income before 30 June.

You now have got some great tax tips, it’s time to take action. Times are tough so every dollar saved counts.

6. PREPAY PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE A 27.82 per cent rebate on private health insurance premiums gradually phases out for those who earn over $90,000 (single) or $180,000 (couple). If you are currently under these thresholds, but think you will earn above these levels in 2016/17, you can still get the rebate in full if you prepay 12 months’ worth of premiums before 1 July. 7. CLAIM A DEDUCTION FOR THE COSTS YOU INCUR IN RUNNING YOUR HOME-OFFICE More and more people these days are doing work at home but not many are aware that they can claim a deduction for costs you incur in running your home office, even if a room is not set aside solely for work-related purposes. Deductions are available for the work-related

Avoid paying too much in tax or leaving yourself to a visit from the taxman. Great accountants are like surveyors - they know where the boundaries are, and their fees are tax deductible!

SAFETY BRIEFING Please listen carefully to the Safety Briefing and take the time to read through the Safety On Board Card prior to takeoff. This will help you familiarise yourself with the emergency exits, brace position and the location of your life jacket. DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT) It has been reported that some airline passengers have developed clots in deep blood vessels, often in the lower legs, as a result of sitting for an extended period without exercise or movement. This condition is known medically as Deep Vein Thrombosis, or DVT. If blood clot fragments break off and lodge in other areas of the body such as the lungs, they may cause a possible fatal pulmonary thrombosis when a person starts walking after being immobile for a long time. The risk factors for DVT include varicose veins, recent surgery or injury in the lower legs, malignant diseases, past history of DVT, obesity, pregnancy and recent childbirth. Anyone with these risk factors is advised to consult a doctor prior to flying to find out how to minimise the risk of DVT. During the flight, we recommend passengers take the following precautions: • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and minimise intake of alcohol. • Exercise onboard the aircraft by moving and stretching your toes, rotating your ankles, raising and lowering each leg and massaging your calves gently. In addition, we suggest that you avoid crossing your legs. SEATBELTS Seatbelts must be firmly fastened for take-off, landing and whilst the seatbelt sign is illuminated. We do recommend that your seatbelt be fastened at all times whilst seated in case of unexpected turbulence. TRAY TABLES/SEAT BACKS Please ensure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the upright position for take-off and landing. SMOKING Government regulations strictly prohibit smoking on all domestic flights. Special smoke detectors have been fitted to the toilet on board the aircraft. Smoking is also prohibited on the tarmac and throughout the terminal buildings. CARRY ON LUGGAGE If you have carry on luggage please stow it in the overhead lockers or under the seat in front of you. Hand luggage not correctly stowed may cause injury in the event of unexpected turbulence. ELECTRONIC DEVICES Hazards exist to aircraft systems by Electro-Magnetic Interference from Portable Electronic Devices. The interference can cause aircraft systems to malfunction. To provide adequate protection for the aircraft please note that: mobile phones are not to be used at any time on board the aircraft. Other devices such as compact disc players, portable palm top and lap top computers, cassette players, personal electronic organisers or personal video games may be used during cruise only, NOT when the aircraft is taking off and landing.

From Trucks

to Tracks With mining in her blood, this sixth generation miner from WA is turning heads wherever she goes. Despite her mining upbringing, creativity and music has always been a big part of 25-year-old Gemma Kirby’s life.

M

uch to her father's initial disgust that his smart, beautiful, blonde daughter would follow him into the mines, she chose to do so and now works shiftwork, 7-days-on and 7-days-off, driving trucks in coal mines in North Queensland. She is one of only three women on site, which in itself can prove challenging! Gemma, however, takes it in her stride and has learnt to match it with the best of them in camp, while also pursuing her other passion music. But this wasn't always easy…

STAY in one of the best locations in Perth affordable accommodation in a million dollar setting. RIVERSIDE SERVICED APARTMENTS The four-star Peninsula Riverside Serviced Apartments are situated on the picturesque South Perth foreshore, overlooking the Swan River and Perth city skyline. The self-contained Riverview, Standard and Courtyard apartments include a modern equipped kitchen, dining/lounge area, separate bedroom and ensuite bathroom, and are serviced three times a week.

Weighing 122kg, Gemma couldn't get a job driving trucks in the mines as she was too heavy, let alone pursue a serious career in music, so she set out to change her life for the better. Tired of being the fat girl with the voice of an angel, she changed her whole way of living - swapping bad foods and habits for good ones and making exercise a part of her every day – even when in camp and on night shift. She lost a staggering 54kg in 18 months and has kept it off since. In 2015, Gemma released her debut album, Semi-Precious. It was instantly deemed too controversial in a fairly safe music industry because of her unconventional day job and confident, attitude-driven music approach. This only inspired Gemma further, wanting to share her unique stories and experiences with other miners and fans from all over - and she did! Her latest single Coal Train is a song about her profession as a coal miner and is emblematic of the brash, attitudinal performer she is. It captures the essence of a coal train rolling through its churning beat, metaphorically and simultaneously reflecting the sometimes tumultuous ride of life and love. “I look forward to continuing to write both behind the wheel in my truck and with other songwriters for the next five months, and for all the miners out there, I hope you like them!” - Gemma Kirby.

Semi-Precious is out now at gkofficial.com or on itunes.
