WE MEET AGAIN! HEY TRADIES, IT’S GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK!
W
ith the recent election we’ve encountered some pretty poor marketing campaigns from both sides of the fence. Recently I came across a doozy, concocted by the Liberal Party, where they’ve propped an actor-Tradie up on a flimsy-looking work bench having a heart-to-heart with us about the Labor Party’s attempt to ‘go to war’ on the Aussie economy. Now, I know a typical Aussie Tradie-bloke when I see one and he’s usually got three-day-old stubble, worn out looking work duds and a beaten-up old travel mug the size of a small child’s head. This fella is clearly an imposter and we’re not the only ones that think so! Flick to the Ultimate Guide To Smoko on page 10 to find out more, including where to see the full video! I’d love to hear what our Tradies think of the election and what it means for you in the industry, so feel free to drop me a line with your thoughts at aly@ttmediagroup.com.au Also in this issue, we sit down with Qantas Wallabies star Joe Powell - head to page 9 to find out more about the team and Joe’s stealth training regime! Speaking of stealth, we’re going to make sure you’re a tax time superhero this year, so we’ve got some sneaky tips to get you ahead of the money game and into some awesome news boys toys sooner, head to page 18 to find out more! Because you guys are so awesome we’re keeping the legendary freebies coming, like movie tickets to Central Intelligence, new work boots from Mongrel and the latest and greatest tools for the job! I’ll leave you to get busy! Until next time, Tradies…

EMPOWER VANUATA: FOLLOW UP
A huge thanks to everyone that donated to the first fundraising campaign for Empower Vanuatu. Organisers raised over $10,000 which enabled the supply of lap top computers into a school on the Island of Tanna In Vanuatu. Everyone who took park has had a role in something quite historic, when the team got together with an amazing company out of Queensland, Nev House, who built 14 cyclone-proof buildings on Tanna, including a magnificent school, and allowed everyone to join them on their official opening in April to present the computers. For those wanting to pledge funds, please get them in as soon as you can as this round of fundraising closes. Next year is shaping up to be a ripper, with another 200 schools to contribute to! CURRENT LENDING PRACTISES CAN PUNISH SMALL BUSINESS Small business accounts for 97 per cent of all businesses in Australia, employs 70 per cent of the workforce and contributes more than half a trillion dollars to the economy, yet remains the poor cousin when it comes to securing finance. It’s a problem that needs fixing, according to Campbell Smyth, CEO Asia Pacific for specialist lender Bluestone Mortgages. “Statistics like these demonstrate that small business and self-employed people should be the most powerful economic voice in Australia, because they truly are the engine room of our economy,” Campbell said. “Over 2.4 million Australians are self-employed, 1.4 million of these are sole traders and the remaining 1 million employ 6 million people. According to a report by the World Bank and International Finance Corporation, Australia is ranked as the second easiest country to start a business, after New Zealand, and yet more than 60 per cent of small businesses fail within the first three years of operation,” Mr Smyth explained. “Starting a new business is fraught with risks of all types, but there’s no question that it is next to impossible to succeed without access to affordable capital, and most small and medium-sized enterprises say that availability and conditions of credit are key barriers to their business growth. When you add to that a previous business or credit failure – which is not uncommon for business entrepreneurs, then they are facing a massive hurdle.” Mr Smyth said he wanted to highlight that there are options outside of the mainstream banks. In fact, non-banks make up a growing segment of the loan market. He said that small business owners should not hesitate to seek help from a specialist lender and/or broker with experience in this area.

THE FAKE TRADIE u
What do you get when you pass a beer to a bloke on a jack hammer? If it isn’t funny enough to imagine, you have to see the footage, paired with the hilarious commentary by Ozzy Man Reviews. So the big question is, what happens to the beer?
With a new political war in the air, a piece of marketing material was bound to surface that would have us all scratching our heads! In this round, the Liberal Party reckons Labor’s war on the economy will cost Aussie jobs and they’ve got a fake tradie telling us about it, with his questionable acting ability and debatable jobsite coffee cup in hand. What do you reckon? Does this bloke do Tradie’s justice?

IGAS Apprentices and Trainees unveiled the champions of the traditional trade industry last month at its annual Excellence in Trades Awards (ETA) Queensland Final and National Gala, with the TRADIE Magazine watching earnestly from the crowd as the program’s official media partner.
2016 was a big year for the MIGAS Excellence in Trades Awards. Not only did it mark the 20th anniversary of the awards program searching far and wide across Australia to uncover the apprentices and trainees showing the industry how it is done, it also attracted more nominees than any previous year.
The crowd celebrated the trade industry’s ‘night of nights’ in style, with world renowned beat boxer Tom Thum opening the show with a spellbinding performance and 2016 Australian of the Year and former Chief of Army David Morrison delivering an uplifting speech encouraging guests to strive high to leave a legacy.
A highlight for us was watching MIGAS shine a light on the increasing contributions of women and Indigenous Australians to the sector, with the awarding of a Women in Trades Medal for Excellence and Indigenous Medals for Excellence.
In addition to the Queensland Finalists being announced across five categories, the winners of the two highly coveted national awards were announced, with Luke Atkins from Associated Scale Services named National Apprentice of the Year and Jessica Grima from BOC Australia as National Trainee of the Year.

On this month’s soapbox we asked our Facebook friends about EVERYONE’S favourite time of the year – tax time! We asked our tradies…
KEVIN SNEE “The biggest annoyance is to actually pay someone to try and get money that we paid back into our accounts and it’s usually not much - I don’t understand this! Our job is already taxing on our bodies and families but it seems the government doesn’t get enough money with cigarette sales and the cops pulling people over for stupid stuff. The only perk that we possibly could get out of this is a case and tax free cash jobs, or maybe the occasional packet of winny blues on the side as a treat.”

TRADIELLSS WITH BA
It doesn’t get much tougher than Rugby Union – especially when it comes to the Aussie Wallabies squad! This month, we sat down for a chat with Wallabies recruit Joe Powell to find out more about how he got his shot at the big time in footy…
TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY IN FOOTBALL HOW DID THE DREAM START FOR YOU? I started playing Rugby in the Under 10s at the Marist College in Canberra and then I played for ACT from Under 12s to Under 18s. When I finished school I went to the Canberra Vikings club, then played for Australia in the Under 20s side. I got to go with the Brumbies last and this year, and then I got a call to head into the Wallabies squad a few weeks ago.
anything like that. My least favourite thing would have to be the amount of running involved - the amount of kilometres per game isn’t really that enjoyable!
THAT’S A PRETTY COOL JOURNEY! IS FOOTBALL A BIG DEAL IN YOUR FAMILY? My dad and my younger and older brothers all played footy, so yeah. Dad really got me into playing Rugby. I remember from a young age we would always go and watch the Brumbies play as a family, so I’ve always been a member at the club. Footy is a big part of the family.
WHAT WAS IT LIKE GETTING THE NEWS ABOUT BEING SELECTED TO PLAY FOR THE WALLABIES? I thought it was a joke (laughs)! I actually got an email saying I was selected in the squad but I hadn’t heard from anyone that it was even a potential opportunity. Plus, I had only played a couple of games, so it wasn’t on the cards! It was a huge surprise though and I was pretty happy. The selection was made randomly from a wider squad after the Super Rugby and I guess there weren’t that many halfbacks playing that well, so they went out on a whim and gave me a go out of nowhere (laughs)!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE AND LEAST FAVOURITE THINGS ABOUT PLAYING YOUR POSITION AS HALFBACK? My favourite thing is that I don’t have to do much tackling and I get to stay out of everything, so there’s also not many injuries or
14
JULY 2016
www.thetradie.com.au
HOW DO YOU STAY FOCUSED WHEN IT COMES TO TRAINING AND THE IDEA OF GETTING OUT ON THE FIELD? I’ve spent a week and a half in training camps in Queensland and a few half weeks in Sydney, but the preparation isn’t that different to training with the Brumbies. Getting to know everyone was probably the hardest part. It’s really exciting, though, because as a kid you dream to play for the Wallabies so when it became a realistic opportunity it was really cool.
WHAT HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED SO FAR WITH THE WALLABIES SQUAD? The Wallabies just completed a 3-test series against England and that was the squad I was in there for. I’m also hoping to be playing at the end of the year for Rugby Championship and other games.
HOW DO YOU FEEL THE TEAM IS GOING THIS SEASON, FROM AN INSIDER’S PERSPECTIVE? Behind the walls it’s like any other footy team, except with high profile players, which can make it a little more serious. There’s always times where we have a bit of fun, though. They’re just a really good bunch of blokes and it’s a good experience.
EVERYONE WILL BE KEEN TO KNOW THAT YOU’RE ALSO A CARPENTER IN THE MAKING! IS THIS SOMETHING YOU’LL GO BACK TO LATER IN YOUR LIFE? Yeah, I started my apprenticeship as a carpenter but it’s not something I will be able to continue while doing footy - it’s just not possible. What I am doing, though, is going to university and I want to study something relating to construction. I’m planning to study by correspondence with the University of Southern Queensland.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO OTHER PEOPLE WANTING TO KICK SOME OF THEIR OWN GOALS? Keep working hard and if you’ve got a dream, go for it!
T
WHAT’S YOUR TRAINING REGIME LIKE? On the average day we have a morning unit session, so the backs and forwards split up. After that is a gym session, then a bit of a break in the middle, then a team session in the afternoon. We’d usually follow that with a day off.

NightHawk is first completely original production headphone to use a 3D-printed component . The ear cups are the result of stateof-the-art manufacturing made from a unique material known as ‘liquid wood’ or lignin, a natural by-product of wood, that has been combined with reclaimed plant fibres, heated, liquefied and processed in a way that it can be injection molded. Unlike plastic, liquid wood delivers outstanding acoustic properties and has less of a negative impact on the environment. NightHawk draws inspiration from loudspeaker designs for the best listening experience possible in a set of headphones. e’re all aware of how hectic this time of year can be, especially for small business owners, but have you considered your approach for the new financial year? With new business opportunities a-plenty it’s important to be prepared. Be the cleverest Tradie on the block and hit the ground running with these tips for setting financial goals? Review The Previous Year – There might not be a Facebook reminder for this, but take a moment to reflect on your finances for the year. Consider the challenges, changes and improvements you made with your business and consider what you might face in the new year. With help from your accountant, you can review how your business performed financially, then figure out how you can move forward.

JULY 2016
Stick to Your Budget – You’re not alone on this – many small businesses struggle to stick to a budget. Impulse and panic buys can lead to financial disaster and too strict a budget can put a stopper on business growth. It’s important to monitor spending and have a realistic budget in place that is in line with your future goals. Cash Flow Control – We know this is a big one for our Tradies as cash flow is the money you have readily available to cover expenses. It’s the lifeblood of your business as having no money could result in your business shutting down, which is bad news for everyone! Talk to your accountant to work out a plan to control your cash flow that goes hand-in-hand with your budget.
www.thetradie.com.au
Monitor Your Margins – While it might be a short-term pain, it’s a long-term benefit… Take some time to compare your profit margin to your industry’s average. This will assist you in determining where you stand and how you can plan to achieve this standard. Some of the ways to do this include reducing the cost of production or services or by raising product or service prices. Save, Save, Save! – This is essential! It could be the difference between you and your new boat! Saving money wherever possible will of course benefit you and your business. Being both price sensitive and alert when spending will allows you to consider new opportunities to save. Setting up a recurring transfer of funds to a holding account is a great “out of sight, out of mind” way to save; have this amount included in your cash flow forecast and
create an automatic, set and forget transfer- a small amount each week will go a long way. Before you know it – welcome, new boat! Drop That Debt – Uh-oh, it’s the D-word none of us want to hear! Debt is a major factor for small to mediumsized businesses so if you haven’t created one already, discuss a financial plan with your accountant based around eliminating or reducing your debt. Be aware of interest rates for each of these debts and ensure that your plan allows for debts with the highest rate to be cleared out first. A WORD FROM CBUS
a better retirement?
Will the contributions that your employer makes be enough for you to retire comfortably? Salary sacrifice can help you boost your super and potentially pay less tax.
WHAT IS SALARY SACRIFICE? Salary sacrifice allows you to make contributions to your super using pre-tax dollars. This gives you the opportunity to boost your super balance and pocket some handy tax benefits at the same time. It involves giving up some of your takehome pay (it doesn’t need to be forever) and asking your employer to contribute it to your super instead.
YOU CAN SAVE ON TAX USING SALARY SACRIFICE By putting away some of your before-tax earnings, you'll be taxed at the special rate of 15%, allowing you to save money in more ways than one. The tax saving you may receive is the difference between your marginal tax rate plus the Medicare levy and the Budget Repair levy (a total of up to 49%) and the super tax rate (which is 15%).
LET’S LOOK AT AN EXAMPLE…
Jack has saved a total of $1,170 in tax by using salary sacrifice to make his additional super contribution. *Limits to contributions apply

ELECTRICIAN’S PLIER
An old woman is riding an elevator... ...in a very lavish New York City Building when a young and beautiful woman gets into the elevator smelling of expensive perfume. She turns to the old woman and says arrogantly, “Romance by Ralph Lauren, $150 an ounce!” Then another young and beautiful woman gets into the elevator and also very arrogantly turns to the old woman and says, “Chanel No. 5, $200 an ounce!” About three floors later, the old woman has reached her destination and is about to get off the elevator. Before she leaves, she looks both of the beautiful women in the eye, then bends over, farts and says “Broccoli, 49 cents a pound!”

COLT COMPRESSORS
CONTINUE TO GROW IN 2016 there’s a big year ahead for colt...
C
OLT is a family-owned Australian brand and has long been synonymous with trade quality and seen as a true tradesman’s workhorse compressor for use with pneumatic tools. The iconic orange tank is automatically recognisable and for a generation has been known as the original orange tank compressor, not to be mistaken for other similar coloured products. Over the years, COLT’s main priority was electric compressors to suit the

professional tradesmen in the construction industry, but with constant market consultation COLT began to release a variety of units for professionals in other fields. These include compressors with smaller tanks for ease of portability, varying HP to suit the task at hand, oil free motors for
www.thetradie.com.au
Airco Fastener General Manager Brett Jamieson said the COLT compressor has come a long way from the ever-popular COLT 282, but most importantly whilst the motor output or size of tank may change, their products are always built to the optimal standard for professional tradesmen. “When buying a COLT you are paying for a quality unit, backed up by a nationwide network of service agents - can other brands offer consumers the same level of quality and after sales support?” Mr Jamieson explained that the current compressor market
is saturated and to continue to grow, they ensure their distributors and users are aware of the brand’s promise to provide quality products followed up closely with a national after sales service team. “We take the disruption away and let our users and distributors focus on what is important. We have longterm plans for the COLT brand and have quite a few products currently in our launch roadmap,” he said. “We plan to extend the COLT brand into a new product market that fits in well with COLT brand direction, so watch this space.” For more information, contact 1300 139 015 or visit aircofasteners.com.au. ST TOOL TE tester, knocka! by the tradie’s resident tool
CIGWELD 165ST 3-IN-1 WELDER • Easy set-up and pack-down • Loaded with technology • Powers through the job faster and more effectively than traditional welders Alright legends, this month I’ve been asked to test the new CIGWELD 165ST 3-in-1 (MIG, STICK, TIG) welder and I’m excited to rip into this one! As I unpack the unit from the box and get ready to give this beauty a go, I notice it's very simple to setup. The wire for the MIG feeds in so simply and it's really designed so you can't mess it up – actually, I'm sure some could, but for the average tradie you will be able to handle it, trust me! The welder itself is light enough for one bloke to handle but heavy enough to know you've got yourself a piece of machinery that can weld properly. As they used to say, the heavier the welder, the better it is. It’s the same of this
welder, but technology appears to be taking over and the proof is surely in the pudding! I put the MIG through the test on some thin mild steel on the back of the spare motorbike trailer and it welded the thin stuff really easily and without blowing holes everywhere as it's very adjustable – bonus! I also pulled out the big guns and tested thicker steel, which, if wound up, can really melt into the steel as you'd expect from a professional quality inverter welder these days. The welding wire and electrodes (ESAB OK53.16 Twincoat SPEZIAL’s) from Cigweld are honestly the best I've used and I know I’ll be getting these next time because it makes the job so much easier and neater – a must for a per fectionist like myself!
KNOCKA
I also tried out the CIGWELD ProLite Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet, which was fully adjustable to suit any sized head - fat, skinny, boxy or circular. It certainly made the job easy being able to see what I was doing without a delay when the weld began, so I found it gave a really fast result and safe protection for my eyes from the welder flash. It’s safe to say, I didn’t want to return this baby and it’s on my Christmas wish list – a must-have for my collection over the older, heavier faithfuls I've been making do with for too many years. It also comes with a 3 year warranty, making it even more desirable! This is a beast of a welder, so do yourself a favour and get your hands on one too!

We had a chat to the true blue aussie legend ahead of his gig at the deni ute muster YOU BEGAN YOUR CAREER IN MUSIC YOUNG, PLAYING THE DRUMS WITH YOUR DAD – CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AS A MUSICIAN? When I was 4 years old my dad and my uncles had a band called ‘Rising Rock’. My dad was rhythm guitarist and singer, Uncle Pete was on bass, Uncle Sam on drums and Uncle Sash was the dodgy manager because he was musically challenged (laughs)! I would watch them and I wanted to be just like Uncle Sam - sitting up the back of the band banging away on the drums. It just looked cool to a 4 year old and most of all, he got to make lots of noise (laughs)! So mum bought me a small drum kit and away I went. When I was 17 a couple of my mates and I got together and starting jamming in the garage like a lot of kids do, but we couldn’t find a singer and one of the guys was a drummer so I reluctantly gave up the drumsticks and filled the singing spot. If we had have found a singer I may not be talking to you now!
WHAT IS IT ABOUT COUNTRY MUSIC THAT GETS YOUR BLOOD PUMPING? Country music is and has been evolving over recent years. What I love about it is that it’s a melting pot of styles - blues, rock, pop, folk - and the major focus is on the lyric and story. Country audiences want more from their music than just a hook line sung over and over to a loop or beat. Country music takes you on a journey, connects with you and resonates with you. I didn’t grow up listening to traditional country artists, I was into The Eagles, John Cougar, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen – and all these artists are
amazing storytellers in their music and blur the lines between rock, pop and country.
just party! But don’t worry, the world will still be there on Monday (laughs)!
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’D BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T A MUSICIAN?
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR JAMPACKED SHOWS LIKE THIS?
I’d like to think I'd be a V8 Supercar driver but in reality I don't think I would have gotten too far (laughs)! I love cooking and always have, so my alternative career would have been a chef.
YOU’VE RELEASED A BUNCH OF ALBUMS AND DONE A LOT OF TOURING, WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT ON THE ROAD? Cooking and eating! I love fishing too and then cooking and eating the fish - seeing a pattern here?! Something else I've been getting into a lot in recent years is renovating little old houses. I'm not great on the tools, but I love having a crack. The reno’s I’ve done so far have been with a builder-mate of mine called Dave Graham – an old school builder who tries his best to teach me, although I’m not sure how good of a student I am, but we get the job done!
FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T BEEN, TELL US ABOUT THE DENI UTE MUSTER AND WHAT PEOPLE CAN EXPECT AT THE EVENT? If you had to pick the biggest party festival of the year it’s the Deni Ute Muster! There's a vibe there that goes beyond just music and camping out. The location, organisers, music and the thousands that travel from everywhere just make it one of the best weekends you’ll ever have. People go there to leave the world behind for a couple days and
We always make sure we hit Deni with our A-Game. We put a lot of thought into which songs are going to get the place jumping. When I do Deni, I’m there to give it everything I’ve got on that stage!
WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOUR SET AT THE DENI UTE MUSTER? The Outlaws is my dream party band. The bands made up of my mates who are great singers and artists in their own right - Drew (McAlister), Mike (Carr), Travis (Collins) and Matty (Cornell) - and we put together a song list of our all-time favourite songs that we like to party to, the songs you’d put on a mix tape and that everybody knows every word of! So it turns into a huge singalong with us and the entire crowd belting it out like there’s no tomorrow!
MOST OF OUR READERS ARE AUSSIE TRADIES AND WOULD BE HUGE FANS OF YOUR MUSIC, WHAT WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT DO YOU HAVE FOR OUR TRUE-BLUE TRADESMEN AND WOMEN OUT THERE? Just keep doing what you’re doing, there’s nothing more satisfying than standing back after a hard day’s work and seeing something you’ve built with your own two hands. And then grab a few coldies, turn some music on and enjoy the weekend! Oh, and wear safety glasses! T www.thetradie.com.au

MALCO SHEAR ATTACHMENTS
ARE LABOUR-SAVING,
COST EFFECTIVE
A
metal-cutting power shear is now a more accessible and practical job-site addition than ever before! Cost-effective TurboShear attachments from Malco Products quickly insert into the chuck of a corded or cordless drill or impact driver you already own to make fast, straight, curved or square cuts in sheet metal, metal roofing and building panels. A sleek, lightweight aluminium cast shear head and a compact, molded polymer drill clamp allow maximum portability and ease to go wherever the work is. The telescoping clamp adjusts to fit both length and width of a drill motor housing as well as smaller bodied impact drivers. The clamp collar allows the shear head to be rotated 360° and set in any position to optimize tool clearance and facilitate easy material flow. Malco TurboShears can be operated at high or low speeds for the control you need to make precise trim cuts, follow tight patterns or navigate cuts over profiles. A Malco model TSCM TurboShear attachment is a great value for both the time savings it offers, and the low investment required to achieve clean precise cuts in corrugated metal roofing panels every time. Specialised elongated blades with compact jaws create a steep 75-degree offset so the drill is held more vertically when starting a cut. As the offset blades follow the rising angle of a corrugated profile, the drill handle or battery pack has clearance to naturally tip downward and still clear the roofing panel surface. These hardened carbon steel blades offer long service life in 0.31 to 0.61 mm steel roofing material. A versatile model TSHD TurboShear attachment features heavy-duty gearing and larger, wideropening blades for cutting up to 1.22 mm cold rolled steel, including layered metal and seams. The model TSHD is also very maneuverable and capable of making precise trim cuts, following tight patterns and, with the head rotated for adequate clearance, can navigate mild corrugated profiles. Both of the TurboShear models described here, have a lateral blade adjustment capability to ensure cutting performance and maneuverability can be maintained for the life of the blades. Replacement blades are available and are easily installed on the job. Contact BND Australia on 1300 883 520 for your nearest retailer, or visit bndaustralia. com.au for more information. T

Replace Door Skins quickly with a rolled hem that looks very similar to the original factory hem. Customers will be happy when they see how great their repaired doors look. No risk of denting, scratching, or marring the door skin’s surface. Handle different door thicknesses as the tool properly aligns the skin and frame.
Portable Mini-Brake MB48A The versatile Mini Brake produces bends up to 135 degrees in sheet metals, including aluminum, copper and 22-gauge galvanized steel.
