How Does Juvéderm Work? As you age, your skin loses some of its hyaluronic acid, a process that is sped up if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun. The hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm® helps keep your skin hydrated, thus restoring and maintaining its volume. Hyaluronic acid also appears to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, two proteins that contribute to the skin’s fullness and elasticity.

ONE TUNIC
THREE WAYS
What if it were possible to have a style that would transcend the trends and allow you to look polished and put-together at every age? What if you no longer had to worry about dressing for your age, and you could instead focus on dressing for your style? What if looking great didn’t have to take so much effort and time? 18 | triangle style
Written by: Mary Michele Nidiffer, Founder, StyleFinder Boutique, StyleFinderBoutique.com Photos By: Elizabeth Galecke
It used to be that women would have a certain style. That is, until they reached a ‘certain age’ and it no longer worked for them. That age could be about the time they began to have kids, they quit working or menopause kicked in. Then all hell would break loose on the fashion front as they struggled to know what worked for their bodies, their life, their style. The good news is that meeting that struggle head-on can be so much easier today. With so many styles of clothing made with stretch to fit changing body types and accommodate a few extra pounds in a flattering way, it can be easy to look great at every age and every stage. Having a few ‘secret weapons’ in your arsenal can help too! Here at StyleFinder Boutique, we like to think of our hand-dyed Italian silk tunics as such a secret weapon. They gently skim the body without clinging to every lump, bump and bulge. They are timeless while still up-to-theminute. A silk tunic has a carefree ease to it that allows you to be in touch with your feminine side. Its elegance belies its simplicity. They look and feel sumptuous and luxurious, yet with a built-in t-shirt lining, no one will ever know how comfortable you are. They’ll just know how gorgeous you look.
Silk tunics are gorgeous on women of all ages and sizes and can be dressed up or down. Pair them with: • Modern-fit pants in your favorite print • Flowy palazzo pants if you’re on the taller side • A slim-fitting skirt • Jeans
Then add a statement necklace, a beautiful bracelet and top with a cape for fall and you have a look that captivates. Beware that the silk tunic does not wear you. Finding a style that is in proportion to you is key to getting a great fit. If there is too much fabric, it hangs down too low or slides off your shoulders, just say no! TS

TIPS AND TRICKS | NECKLACES AND NECKLINES - Lauren Fong from www.theChriselleFactor.com, IG:ChriselleLim • photos by Karen Chen"
TUBE TOP WITH CHOKER Keep things minimal by pairing your tube top with a simple choker. The straight line cut of the tube top is perfect for showing off the simplicity of your choker and also helps to elongate your neckline!
BUTTON UP WITH STATEMENT NECKLACE
Pairing button-ups with a statement necklace is one of my favorite pairings. I love how the statement necklace comes out from under the collar as though its almost one piece. It’s the perfect combination of subtle and statement!
HALTER NECK WITH A TRIANGLE PENDANT
The halter neck is best paired with a triangle shaped pendant. If you look at the lines of the sides of a halter top, they go up toward your face in almost a triangle shape. So I like to offset this with a triangle shaped necklace pointing down from your face for the perfect balance. 20 | triangle style
TURTLENECK WITH A LONG CHAIN
Now that Fall is here, expect to see a lot more of this pairing. It’s simple and elegant, and this is also one of the pairings that helps elongate your neck in a sophisticated and understated way.
CREW NECKLINE WITH A BIB OR COLLAR NECKLACE The crew neckline is
hardest necklines to pair because there are so many hard lines going on. But for this reason, it’s perfect for bringing out the shape of an angular necklace. Did you notice that it also enhances the jawline?
V-NECK WITH SLIM PENDANT This
pairing is simple and sweet. I love pairing a V-neck with a simple slim pendant for a classy and understated look. Less is more in this case.

BOUTIQUE PICKS 1. THE BASE
The base of your outfit is best kept simple. Think color, but very few designs. You can play with colors, especially this fall’s palettes of saturated earth tones like olive green, rust red, and mustard yellow. Simple tops make it easy to layer on a cardigan, jacket, or even a pullover sweater.

3. OUTERWEAR
You can really have fun by mixing in some amazing outerwear to top everything off. For those crisp fall days, check out leather jackets or even a cape. When the temperatures drop at night you’ll want to turn to coats. It’s important to keep your look versatile, and for that you’ll want to experiment with styles, colors, and prints. 4. ACCESSORIES
An important thing to remember with layers is to keep accessories simple so that they complement the look instead of causing confusion. Wrist watches are great classic pieces, or pair studs with a statement necklace. You can add a nice touch of glam with a thin layered necklace too.

Scarves/Wraps really pull the look together, and they’re some of our favorite things about fall. They add polish to the top of your outfit and they keep you warm! Double bonus! Wearing an ill-fitting bra is not only uncomfortable it interferes with the look of the outfit you put so much effort into creating. J. Alane’s Fine Lingerie, a boutique in Raleigh, is known throughout the Triangle as the place to go when it comes to getting your bra fitted perfectly, and they also carry Empreinte Bras, which are geared towards women with larger bust but not necessarily a larger band. Empreinte bras are engineered to offer amazing support through the way they are structured. They pull the breast up and forward, out away from under the arms. Their exquisite design and beauty will make you fall in love, but it’s their high-end construction that will keep you coming back for more.
THERE ARE FIVE KEY DESIGN POINTS THAT MAKE THESE BRAS SO FANTASTIC.
Don't Suffer In Silence...
The Cups are always made of sturdy, durable fabrics like tulle, lace, or microfiber. Most bras on the market are made with elastane threads, but that actually causes unwanted movements. Empreinte bras do not use any high thread count elastane fabrics.
We offer several options to help restore confidence, no matter what your personal level of hair loss may be.
The Back Band is described as having “liveliness” thanks to their extensive research and testing. Empreinte uses a fabric that reverts to its original size without stretching out of shape— unheard of in most brands! This attention to detail means your brassiere won’t fail to give you a taut, supportive fit every time you wear it. “Chimney” back, and exclusive feature of Empreinte bras, results from their special construction that centers and balances the weight of the breasts, creating a balance between the middle of the back. The Straps make or break the bra when it comes to larger cup sizes. When they’re not structured properly you can experience sagging, no matter how great the cup is constructed. Empreinte’s bra straps stretch 20 percent less than the industry standard because they have a low degree of elasticity, which guarantees a longer bra life. The Underwire. Empreinte uses a full, closed underwire, which is incredibly slimming and slenderizing. Just wait until you put your top back on! You’ll check out your own silhouette with joy!

Women don’t have to choose between beauty and comfort— Empreinte has rolled them into one bra that’s worth every penny. Investing in under garments is such an important part of being a well-dressed woman. To make sure you get the very best pieces, get professionally fitted. The ladies at J. Alane’s Fine Lingerie can help you choose the right cup and band size, helping you make the most of your investment and assets

BEAUTY | REVIEW
I’ve been in the beauty biz for over 15 years and as a professional model, I have been privy to almost every kind of makeup, skin and hair product you can imagine. Top secrets from the industry’s best and brightest artists that I can’t wait to share…and now I can! I’m trying out the hottest and most hyped products on the beauty market today, so you don’t have to spend a dime (unless it’s earned it’s “Try” angles!) So hang on to your handbag, I’ve been shopping and I’m ready to share! — HEATHER GREEN
POREfessional: Matte Rescue Invisible-Finish Mattifying Gel CLAIMS TO It claims to be the “secret weapon to defeat pores and shine”. Matte Rescue is a water-based gel that contains diamond powder, which gives skin a blurring effect. This magic make-up absorbs oils and smooths out pores, giving skin a matte appearance. Matte Rescue also claims to work all day. MY TAKE Cool packaging, but for $28, my expectations are a little high! The light blue color throws you off a bit, but it blends right in – no blue face here. It goes on easy, but I had to use more than I thought I would (and I just covered my t-zone). I have combination skin with an oily t-zone, so for me, the coverage was really good. It DOES blur fine lines, but not the deeper wrinkles as well. It claims to last all day, I’d say more like 4-5 hours tops. For the price, I would definitely use this product for special occasions, but daily application is going to be on the pricey side. TRIANGLE STYLE RATING I’m giving PORE-fessional Matte Rescue 3.5 Try-Angles. Weighing the pros and cons, I think this will work great for certain types of skin. I also think it is a little bit of product for a whole lotta money! I really like it, but would not use it every day – overall, it’s a good buy if money is no object! ssss

Go Smile ON THE GO Teeth Whitening Pen
TORY BURCH • ST. JOHN • HERMES CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN • GUCCI AND MORE!
CLAIMS TO “Whiten your teeth comfortably and discreetly, without messy and time-consuming whitening strips or trays.” On the Go whitening pen claims to be easy to use in just seconds and can be used anywhere, at anytime. It also claims to be safe and effective, and works on natural and artificial teeth. MY TAKE I’ve heard great things about Go Smile, so I was excited to get great results. The whitening pen was only $16, so it is affordable and lasts about 1-2 months. I had also read that it works best when combined with the other whiteners from Go Smile – but I’m just testing the pen (1- because I’m cheap and 2- because I’ve got three kids and haven’t used the bathroom alone in six years!). On the Go goes on very easily, doesn’t burn, and actually feels like I had just brushed my teeth. I didn’t notice results right away, but after about a week, I could tell a difference! I would apply it after my morning sweet tea and could actually do it at a stoplight! TRIANGLE STYLE RATING I like it! It doesn’t taste terrible and doesn’t sting like other tooth whiteners I’ve tried. On The Go is a quick and easy way to whiten that doesn’t turn your teeth that shocking, unnatural white – I give it 4 Try-Angles and will definitely continue to use On the Go. ssss
John Frieda Root Blur CLAIMS TO Concealer for your hair. Root Blur claims to “blend away dark roots with a single stroke”. Extending the time between coloring, Root Blur is a mineral-pressed powder in two shades that allows you to customize your color. Light and weightless, quick and simple to use, Root Blur lasts until your next shampoo. MY TAKE I have to admit, I was not counting on the results I got. This is going in Heather’s Handbag of Permanent Products!!! With four shades to choose from (each set containing 2 colors), John Frieda gets this right – it doesn’t make a mess, it is not “cakey”, it’s easy and quick to apply, it does not damage hair and actually lasts! My hair is a couple of different shades of blond/dark blond and in between highlights, this is my go-to hair help. TRIANGLE STYLE RATING LOVE it! You can’t beat the price, $20 – a great product at a great price – Root Blur receives 4.5 Try-Angles, because 5 would come with a hairstylist that would follow me around! sssss

"For a tired mom of three, it was so refreshing...I cannot remember the last time I was pampered." - KELLY LINDSTROM, APEX
FROM THINNING HAIR TO THE BODY HER HAIR CRAVED, TRIANGLE SALON, PLUM HAIR ATELIER TACKLES A READER'S PROBLEM FOR A WINNING LOOK
MEET TRIANGLE STYLE READER, KELLY LINDSTROM Like many moms, Kelly Lindstrom, is close to an everyday superhero. Between caring for her three kids (one of which is seven months old), working full-time and home-schooling her children, Kelly has little time to waste. 32 | triangle style
Written by Kimberly Arnold, Photography By Terrence Jones,
THE PROBLEM... Kelly’s hair is naturally curly and longer, but due to breastfeeding, she is experiencing postpartum hair loss. She wants a shorter hairstyle that is easy to style and low maintenance, but doesn’t look outdated.
TO THE RESCUE...
PLUM Hair Atelier is an upscale salon located on Oberlin Rd. in Raleigh. Their elite stylists are committed to providing exceptional service and require extensive training and education to provide their clients with the most updated hair techniques and trends. Erin, originally a Pennsylvania native, is co-owner of PLUM Hair Atelier. As an industry veteran with years of experience and education, Erin has worked her magic on clients from Raleigh all the way to models at New York Fashion Week.

PROBLEM SOLVED... Erin wanted to create a hairstyle that would accommodate Kelly’s busy lifestyle and require little maintenance. For her color, Erin darkened Kelly’s base color to give her an overall richer look and painted a few lighter pieces around the face and crown to create depth and dimension. For her cut, Erin created the look of a more full silhouette towards the front and top, while tailoring in the nape for a more feminine profile. With her new hairstyle, Kelly can sport her natural curls or wear it smooth. The shorter length provides body for Kelly until her hair density returns to its original state. IN THE END... Kelly’s experience with PLUM atelier salon was truly refreshing. She says, “I cannot remember the last time I was pampered. Erin was so kind, patient, and professional. LIVING THE DREAM MISS NORTH CAROLINA, 2016
McKenzie Faggart
Every little girl dreams of that life changing moment – being on stage, the lights, the applause, the crown and that classic announcement “and the winner is…” Although there are only a select few that make it, the ones that do, are able to share the values and greatness of their home state through their unique talent, class and charitable contributions. ageants are more than just about the way contestants look, but how they have impacted the world around them. Each year, every state in America crowns one of their own to compete for the ultim te title of Miss Ameri a, and this year, North Carolina chose McKenzie Faggart and she’s ready to represent our great state and bring home the crown. - Written by Heather Green Photo provided by Pageantpics.com

Congratulations on your big win! Tell us a little about yourself. Thank you! I am 21 years old, I grew up in Concord, NC, and moved to Charlotte to attend UNC Charlotte for college. I have 3 brothers, (Dillon, 18 and Jake and Jerod, twins who are 28) and a sister (Maddie, 14, who was my Carolina Princess in 2011 and 2014, and my Outstanding Teen in 2016). My parents are Robby and Tracy Faggart. My mother danced and competed in a few pageants growing up, and held the title of Miss Charlotte-Mecklenburg in 1989. A (very) long story short, I began dancing at 2 with my mom as my teacher! I graduated from Dance Productions in Charlotte, where I am now an assistant to my mom, teacher on my own, and a choreographer. I also travel to other studios and teach master classes and choreograph dances. I grew up sharing a love of dance with her, as well as competing in pageants. I competed in an all-natural scholarship youth pageant, the Cinderella Scholarship Pageant. I won the "Tot" division in 2000, and my mom actually took over the directorship of the state pageant in NC, which meant I could only compete at the International Cinderella pageant held in Las Vegas. I competed in a few other local pageants that we're apart of the "Little Miss North Carolina" pageant, such as Little Miss Cabarrus County, Mecklenburg County, Lake Norman, and Hickory, but never competed in the state pageant. Because Cabarrus County is home, I was asked to compete in Miss Cabarrus County's Outstanding Teen in November of 2010 for the 2011 Miss NC pageant. And that's how I began to compete in the organization!

What are some of the most unexpected things that occur when doing pageants? There really aren't many things that are "unexpected." If you've been involved in pageants for a while, you understand the possibilities. Personally, I know that I am to always pack extra, have two of everything, and expect to have forgotten something. I know that each pageant is a different set of judges and only the opinion of 5 people at the time. I am prepared to both, win or lose. I have learned the ins and outs to tricks and secrets of "pageanting."
What was your most nerve-racking moment on stage? My most nervous moment onstage…That's tough! For me, this year, I feel like my most nervous moment onstage was lining up for opening number on the night of finals. Knowing that when the curtain was raised, that was

it. There was no going back. There was no "do over." There was nothing left I could do, other than give it my absolute all.
HATS TO IMPRESS
What aspect of pageantry would surprise people the most? I believe that there are things that people who are outside of pageants or just beginning in pageantry find surprising. We really do break the stereotypes!! Sure, there may be a few "pageant moms" or "competitive girls," but all in all, we are normal girls. We live normal lives and involve ourselves in school, extra curricular activities, are interested in hobbies, have jobs, like time spent with family and friends, etc. The only time we really "live, eat, and sleep" pageants is when it's crunch time! We have determination and drive, but are motivated by our daily lives to be our best self.

I have found that I have more self-improvement and development in using the phases of competition in my every day routine. I am first and foremost a dancer (now more of a teacher) and I don't dance just to compete in a pageant. I am lucky to compete in MAO so that I am able to perform my talent as something that I work on day by day, rather than a minute and a half routine I drill just to get through it onstage. I enjoy working out to be healthy, not just to be "swimsuit ready." I like being aware of politics and having respectful convictions in my personal opinions to be well informed for my future, rather than just for my interview. And of course, I don't wear an evening gown on the regular (haha!), but I do want my gown to reflect the most respectful, classical, and elegant version of what I would look like if I did!
Who did you think was going to win Miss NC? Or did you feel like you had it in the bag? To be honest, I typically have a "feeling" about someone. This year was a little different. I was amongst 40 other incredible girls who I knew were all absolutely capable to fulfill the role of Miss North Carolina. What I chose to focus on was myself. I remained deeply in tune with who I was within my preparations and knew that no matter what, the job would be taken care of. I don't want to say, "I knew I was going to win," but I did have a strong sense that I knew I had what it took to win. I knew I had to have the motivation and strength in order to do so. I was grounded in God and was prepared for whatever He was going to throw at me.
Pageant contestants always appear so put together; do you have ANY behind the scenes bloopers or not so perfect moments? Oh yes, most recently…I have the absolute worst luck with phones. It never fails! The night before I left to go to Raleigh for Miss North Carolina, my cousin Kayla and I went to dinner in Charlotte. As we are leaving, I put my phone in my little purse and walked out of the restaurant. When we stepped outside, I reached for my phone and it wasn't in my purse. I retraced my steps and tried calling it. The phone was turned off! I asked the hostess what I should do and at the same time, another person came forward saying the exact thing just happened to them! The next morning, I called to have the phone disconnected and my dad was nice enough to go get me a new one before the pageant, but I had no contacts during the week because I couldn't log into my iCloud! During each night of competition, we were not allowed to have our phones. Finals night, I packed my new one in a bag my parents would grab out of the dressing room so that I would have it for pictures at the Gala after the pageant. One way or another, my bag was mixed up in my friend's things and packed in her car! I wasn't able to get my phone until Sunday evening... When it turned on, I had 184 text messages, 64 snapchats, 45 messages on Facebook, 47 messages between Instagram and Twitter, and a few missed calls. Again, I didn't have contacts stored in my phone, so it took me almost two weeks to respond to people! I never knew a phone could be so stressful!!

Was being a judge for the Miss NC pageant difficult?
Serving on the judges' panel to select the 79th Miss North Carolina was truly an honor. After having experienced the same emotions as the contestants were having during that very important week, I could fully understand just how important the role of "judge" really was. The Class of 2016 was an incredible group of 42 talented, beautiful, and intelligent young women representing all different regions of our great state.
Which was more stressful - being a contestant or a being a judge?
From The Crown To the Judge... Miss North Carolina, 2010
Adrienne Core
gives a little behind the scenes glimpse into what it's like to be on both sides of the stage as a contestant, winner and judge! 38 | triangle style
I can actually say that judging was a bit more stressful than competing. As a contestant, I was only responsible for presenting my best self and I knew, without a doubt that the many months of hard work leading up to the pageant would be worth it for me no matter the outcome. As a judge, I was very meticulous about every score I chose in making sure that the best young woman for the job was selected.
What is it really like to be Miss North Carolina and THEN a judge?
Becoming Miss North Carolina is truly a life altering opportunity that I am incredibly humbled to have had and helping to select a new young woman to live the year of a lifetime was equally as exciting!

BANO BOUTIQUE has grown from what started as SIMA RAFIZADEH’S zeal and innate eye for quality products and fabrics to a boutique, offering designer clothing from Europe, the US and Canada. BANO also offers expert alterations for women and men, couture tailoring, custom dressmaking, i.e., bridal gowns, and more.

Before opening BANO Boutique, Sima worked as a tailor of couture designs in Florence, Italy. Her love for the small town feel brought her back to Durham, NC, where she started BANO Boutique as a way to translate her love for fine garments into serving fellow designer clothing aficionados in the Triangle area. To quote one of Sima’s customers - “BANO has designer clothes you can’t find anywhere else in the area.” Each piece of clothing, from accessories to coats, sweaters, dresses etc., is hand-picked by Sima on one of her four annual buying trips to Europe and New York. Each piece is exclusive in that only a few designs are bought in bulk, while the majority of the designs from BANO Boutique are bought as one-off pieces where only one is available for purchase. This ensures the BANO customer they will not ‘see themselves’ at other events. It’s this exclusivity that has expanded BANO Boutique’s clientele beyond the Triangle area to New York, Florida and California, and that has awarded BANO the Herald Sun’s Reader’s Choice Award for Best Boutique the last 10 years in a row. Sima’s love for alterations, custom tailoring and dressmaking has also earned her recognition in the Triangle area, including the Herald Sun’s Reader’s Choice Award for Best Alterations for the last 10 years. BANO Boutique is one of the last specialty stores in the Triangle to offer on-site alterations and one-on-one personal wardrobe consultation. Clients can walk in for consultations or make an appointment, even on Sunday and Monday when BANO Boutique is usually closed. The success Sima has enjoyed has been given back to the community through her support of charitable events and organizations in the community, i.e., Center for Child and Family Health, Breast Cancer Research – “I love this job – and if I can, I will give back to the community as much, if not more, then what it has given me. “

Tips For Creating The Perfect Guest Room Written By Pam Pieroni
www.ambientefurniture.com
3915 Beryl Road Raleigh (919) 572-2870
If you are lucky enough to have a spare room you can use as a guest room, your visiting friends and relatives will love you for saving them from splurging on pricey hotel rates. But is that guest room just four walls and a bed, or is it a spot where people can really feel at home within your home? When creating a guest room, think of the things you would want available to make your stay more pleasant, such as the amenities usually supplied in a hotel room. This would include a comfortable bed, of course, and a place to put your clothes. The bed should at least be a full-size one, not a twin. Sometimes you may have a single person visiting, but when a couple is invited, you will need that larger bed. Make up the bed with sheets that have a high thread count, placing two pillows on each side, and top it with a comforter or duvet. Keep a few spare blankets of different thicknesses in the room in case more warmth is needed. Hopefully, you have a closet in the guest room for clothing storage. You may be using this closet already for some of your own belongings. If so, don't keep too many of your clothes here. Leave enough room and empty hangers for guests to hang up their own clothing. If you have a spare dresser, by all means, place that in the room, leaving at least a couple of drawers empty for guests to use.
Place a small nightstand on either side of the bed, with a lamp on each table. These can be inexpensive nightstands you've picked up at garage sales. Even a cute plant stand with a ceramic top can do the trick, as long as it is the appropriate height. On the nightstand or in a basket nearby, place some recent magazine issues, a book of poems or short stories, and perhaps a copy of the local newspaper or a visitor's booklet for your town. A pad and pen should also be handy. Having a television in the room is not a necessity (though some people would enjoy it), but having something to read at night might be greatly appreciated. Include a box of tissues near the bed and a wastebasket nearby. Most guests would also appreciate having a mirror in the bedroom.

OTHER NICE TOUCHES FOR A GUEST ROOM INCLUDE: • A vase full of pretty flowers • A basket filled with toiletries. These can consist of a small tube of toothpaste, a new toothbrush, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion and some liquid soap. You never know what someone may forget to bring along when they're traveling. • Leave a few fluffy towels and a couple of washcloths or new shower puffs somewhere obvious. • If you have a spare hotel-style bathrobe or two (one-size-fits-all), place them in the closet and tell your guests they are freshly laundered. • Be sure to have extra pillows available in the room, especially if you don't have a chair for them to sit on. They will appreciate the extra pillows for sitting up in bed to surf the web or reading in comfort. • Have an empty tray sitting on the dresser or a nightstand so guests have somewhere to place their belongings, like toiletries or jewelry.
• Go all out for those who have business meetings in town and have a steamer on hand to use to ensure their clothes aren't wrinkled. • A universal charger is a nice touch for those who forget their own charging accessories. • Write down the Internet password for the home and place it somewhere conspicuous in the bedroom. • Don't forget to have some hooks on the backs of doors for hanging a robe, other clothing items or wet towels. • A bowl of fresh fruit or packaged snacks and a couple of bottles of water are nice touches, too! Now that you have your guest room set up, it's time to begin inviting people over for a visit. Remember to give your guests some space and time to themselves as you also enjoy one another's company throughout their stay. TS

ASK ANNA I have seen many products with either Alpha Hydroxy Acid Or Retinol: Which Is Best and what are the differences between them? - Catherine Grace Catherine Grace, The simple answer to your question is that BOTH are highly effective and very powerful products that you could be using to enhance your skincare regime. Knowing the purpose of each, and how to use them is key to getting the best results. Alpha Hyrdoxy Acids (AHA) are organic and found from naturally occurring sources found in fruits (malic, citric, tartaric), sugar (glycolic), bitter almonds (mandelic), and milk (lactic acids). The main benefit of AHA products is their exfoliating quality, helping shed the superficial layer of the epidermis, resulting in a healthier texture. Products containing AHA can be used day or night, depending on the other products you are using in tandem. I recommend turning to a pharmaceutical-grade skincare line such as Neostrata for products containing AHA. Neostrata offers several high-strength products containing powerful levels of AHA, while also being free of soaps, fragrances, and PABAs (para-aminobenzoic acid). Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. The main benefits of retinol include its ability to stimulate cell renewal, increase collagen production, and help prevent acne and aging. Retinol products should only be used at night and paired with a daily SPF in the morning, as retinol causes your skin to be more vulnerable to the sun. Again, I recommend pharmaceuticalgrade products containing retinol for greater efficacy and visible results. If you are new to retinol products I’d recommend using creams, such as the line from Avène containing between .05 and .1 percent of retinol that can be applied at night (perhaps after using an AHA facial wash containing glycolic acid). For an even more aggressive treatment, consider the Synergy Retinol Pads that range in strength so you can increase and adjust your treatment over time. Because retinol has a drying effect on the skin, you may also wish to pair usage with a hyaluronic acid-based product to help replenish the skin’s moisture and reduce irritation. Both AHA and retinol products have the potential to dramatically improve the appearance of your skin, as long as you incorporate them into a consistent skincare regime and select products that are pharmaceutical-grade to ensure they contain enough of the active ingredients. Anna Churchill is the founder of Synergy Spa, Aesthetics and Wellness, with two locations in Raleigh. She also teaches corrective makeup and innovative skin care to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, aestheticians, and spa owners worldwide. Email your questions to askanna@trianglestyle.com

DOING GOOD
COUTURE FOR A CAUSE In a perfect world, Activate Good believes every good cause should get the red carpet treatment. If volunteerism were as glamorous and exciting as the latest trends, the world would be a better place. And at Activate Good’s Couture for a Cause, that perfect world of fashion and philanthropy (and fun!) exists for an evening. Now entering its eighth year, Activate Good’s Couture for a Cause is the Triangle’s premier fashion show fundraiser. In 2009 , the event was envisioned as a creative way to support Activate Good’s programs, while also showcasing the diversity of its many local nonprofit partners. While raising funds for Activate Good, the show pairs local designers with local nonprofits to create runway looks inspired by their missions. Designs have ranged from bold and bright to elegant and understated, with unique features such as vinyl record headpieces to represent music organizations, and food label skirts to portray hunger prevention organizations. Past designers-some of whom have gone on to launch their own clothing lines or sign on to work with prestigious designers--often talk about how much they enjoy using fashion to do good. “I have really enjoyed designing for Couture for a Cause for the past two years. from picking and learning about my nonprofit, sketching my ideas, to watching it come to life on the runway, all for a great cause,” says Katherine Fisher, 2014 Couture and People’s Choice Award winner and 2015 designer. With its simultaneous focus on fashion and philanthropy, Couture for a Cause spotlights the best of both worlds, giving aspiring designers and dedicated nonprofits alike the chance to strut their stuff down the runway - all while promoting Activate Good’s mission to activate volunteers to help charitable causes in the Triangle and beyond. “At Activate Good, we help people find opportunities to use their passion for good, and Couture for a Cause is no exception,” says Amber Smith, Activate Good Executive Director. “Year after year, we continue to be impressed with the local design talent in our community, as well as the generosity and enthusiasm of our guests who support us at this event.”
During its first six years, Couture for a Cause was held at Marbles Kids Museum. Then, due to its growing audience of more than 500 attendees, the show moved to the Raleigh Convention Center in 2015. This year, Couture for a Cause returns to the convention center on November 5, 2016, and the event becomes bigger and better once again, as Activate Good partners with the Junior League of Raleigh: A Shopping SPREE! Because of this partnership, SPREE! vendors will be available at Couture for a Cause, and all attendees will receive complimentary admission to Sunday’s shopping spree. As always, the event will feature a red carpet, hors d’oeuvre, cash bar, and of course, the signature runway show with designer prizes for best looks. To experience this winning combination of couture, community, and camaraderie, visit activategood.org/coutureforacause to purchase tickets and learn more.

LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER
WITH THE HELP OF THESE THREE TREATMENTS
Very few people by now are unaware of the cosmetic applications for Botox®, but what many may not realize is that it can be safely combined with two other anti-aging treatments. Dr. Boyse from Southern Dermatology wants to make sure you’ve got the low down on how this trio of treatments might be just what the doctor ordered for anyone who wants younger looking, smooth, beautiful skin this year. Botox® injections soften the appearance of wrinkles, and some dermatologists believe they can even help prevent wrinkles when used for the ones that haven’t “set” yet (you only see them when you’re moving your face, not all the time). Hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvéderm Voluma and Restylane Silk, can fill your face, give back its rounder, youthful contour, rejuvenate and hydrate your lips, and fill in wrinkles. Fillers work great alongside Botox®. While the Botox® works on the dynamic wrinkles, fillers work to fill any static wrinkles— you know, those ones you can see all the time whether your face is moving or not. The treatments can be given together, or you can choose to get Botox® treatment two weeks before using a filler. Botox should last for several months, while you can expect fillers like Voluma to last up to a year or two. A third treatment to consider is Fraxel, which is administered once per month over the course of three to four treatments. Fraxel is the brand name of one of the first fractional lasers, and it resurfaces your face by helping boost your skin’s own production of collagen. It can reduce mild to moderate acne scarring and fine wrinkles, making it a fountain of youth for women under 50. Each one of these treatments can work wonders to remove the effects of aging from your skin, but when you take all three together you can soften and improve your appearance and look like you’ve erased ten years from your face. Dr. Margaret B. Boyse of Southern Dermatology takes a conservative, affordable, holistic approach to determine if the simple solution is best or if she needs to apply more advanced technologies to treatment. She enjoys educating patients about prevention, building long-term relationships through excellent customer care, and being a part of their lives through her medical practice. Specialties include: Cosmetic Dermatology, General Adult and Pediatric Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery and Skin Cancer. 4201 Lake Boone Trail • Suite 207 • Raleigh • 919-863-0073 • southernderm.com 64 | triangle style
An Insider Report
ASK THE EXPERTS
CAROLYN HASSETT, OWNER, ESCENTUELLE
What is something that most people are surprised to learn when they first come to ESCENTUELLE? Visitors are amazed that, despite it being a perfume studio, scent doesn’t overwhelm them as they walk through the door. Perfume’s effect on the senses has much more to do with quality than with quantity. The ingredients used in ESCENTUELLE’s “compose your own perfume” system have a much higher concentration of natural scent material than those on which most commercial perfumes are based. More important, ESCENTUELLE’s essences have passed European Union safety standards, which are currently far more stringent than American standards. How did you become a perfumer? The purchase of a Barnes & Noble essential oil gift set in 1998 led to countless hours of self-study with all the books I could get my hands on and oils I could afford. I knew early on I was more interested in the perfuming side of these lovely aromatics, but selling therapeutic blends made it possible to purchase the considerably more expensive perfumers’ ingredients over time. I participated in artisan perfumers’ groups throughout the early 2000s and made several trips to France to train one-on-one with master perfumers.
66 | triangle style
What is the biggest myth about custom perfume? Some people are afraid making their own scent will be too complicated—that they “wouldn’t even know where to start.” But that’s the beauty of composing a perfume at ESCENTUELLE: I guide you through the process, giving you options at each stage that will work with the type of scent you’re trying to make, mixing and testing as we go. You merely have to say what you like and what you don’t like—no prior knowledge, no chemistry—and I make sure the result is something you’ll love and be proud to wear. How do people experience your perfume — are you finding a particular scent that is popular with your clients? The most common reaction to ESCENTUELLE’s ready-to-wear line is usually three-fold: a smile, a contented sigh, and a remark about it not being overpowering. My most popular fragrance by far is Moonbeam, a soft floral that evokes the gentle light from which it takes its name. Moonbeam’s light flowers, gentle woods, and shimmery greens create a harmony that resonates with most visitors to my studio.
How do you find your ingredients? The essences customers have been using to compose their own eau de parfum since I opened my studio in downtown Cary a year ago all come from Galimard Perfumery in Grasse, France, for whom I’m an independent distributor. The ingredients for my other products are sourced from several American suppliers I’ve been using since the early 2000s, when ESCENTUELLE started as an online and home-party business. Do you create custom home scents? The essential oil blends I make for ESCENTUELLE (like Chai Spice for autumn) are extremely versatile: You can not only mix them in unscented lotion or oil for the body, but you can add a few drops to a diffuser, the melting wax of a candle, or a pot of simmering water to beautifully scent your home. I’m happy to work on all-natural custom blends for any fragrant desire! Do you have a memorable story to share about a client’s personal perfume journey? A customer left an unforgettable voicemail for me a few months back. She told me her family had taken a once-in-a-lifetime trip to France but, just before she and her daughter got to make perfume there, her father fell gravely ill. The family rushed him back to the States, forgoing the rest of their trip. My customer never thought she’d have a chance again to make her own perfume, let alone share that experience with her daughter as originally planned. So she was calling to thank me personally for making their overdue dream come true right here in the Triangle. Do you have any favorites among your fragrance collection? Since I make my own, I haven’t purchased fragrance for many years, but I do spritz old favorites when I want to be transported to a certain time and place: Tea Rose for the innocence of my early teens and Cinnabar for sultry winter nights in my young twenties. Among ESCENTUELLE’s ready-to-wear collection, I reach for Riviera Breeze to catapult me to the beach at a moment’s notice. Set the record straight, should you spray before or after you get dressed and is it better to spray and walk through the mist or spray directly onto the skin? Walking through a mist disperses a fragrance evenly, but much of it gets wasted on the air. If you want scent to last on you, spray it directly on pulse points (inside of wrists/elbows and behind ears/knees) and let it dry. DO NOT rub it in: Friction increases evaporation. Whether you spritz before or after you dress depends on whose nose you want to impress later. ;)

Have you ever read about someone living into his or her nineties or beyond and noticed the article specifically pointed out that he or she had a great sense of humor or was always fun to be around? Several years ago, I noticed this repeated theme of longevity and a sense of humor linked together and as a result decided to do something about better developing mine. It wasn’t easy but I was determined! My first step was to practice laughing--that’s right, I practiced laughing. I began with a rather awkward chuckle, then took a deep breath and said, “Ha Ha,” advanced to “Ha Ha Ha,” and then was so amused with myself burst into a regular chorus of Ha Ha Ha’s. I was smiling almost nonstop after I finished that session. It just did something for my mood, made me feel light-hearted and even younger. My next step was to Google the Internet to read up on the benefits of laughing. There were lots of them! Apparently laughing relaxes your muscles, reduces your stress hormones, strengthens your immune system and improves your mood (as I had already noticed). I read further and found laughter even lowers your blood pressure and sometimes actually improves the way your body handles any disease it already has. Ever notice your sore back felt a little better when you laughed? Third, I glanced through some other articles and found that laughing on the inside is also important — this must be what is meant by “a sense of humor.”
So I deliberately set about looking at life, where appropriate, through rosecolored glasses. That was the not so easy part but I persevered. Even though the majority of the articles I read agree a sense of humor is definitely a component of longevity, they caution not to, so to speak, get carried away with it. Watching where you are going, eating properly, exercising regularly, putting on your seatbelt are no less important in the merryhearted than in those without a sense of humor. I don’t need to worry about that one. It is claimed by some, my husband in particular, that I am so careful that a car can not be anywhere in sight before I attempt to cross the street. That may very well be sort of true, but I am not at all offended; instead, I am smiling about it. See what I mean?

Beach Clothes
That May Never See the Beach Billy Joel may croon about being in a “New York state of mind,” but Triangle residents have always aspired to more of a “beach living” mindset. And that’s reflected in what people are wearing. Though summer is now just a memory and autumn is upon us, the trending style of comfortable, casual, coastal-inspired clothing has not simmered. What does this look consist of? It’s the preppy look that’s been on the scene for years but, more recently, beachwear has experienced an upscale twist. The trend is away from just preppy and toward authentic coastal apparel that shows its southern roots. The colors still speak to the laid-back beach life—sea foams, mints and corals. But more brands are adding dashes of gender neutral colors that anyone can look good in—heather grays, navys, beiges and even black are becoming commonplace in beach-inspired clothing lines. “People dream of living at the beach, so wearing coastal-or boat-inspired clothing isn’t a trend for them—it’s a lifestyle choice,” says Haley Bacon, North Hills store manager for Jarrett Bay Clothing Co. “Everyone aspires to that effortless, relaxed day at the beach, but most of us can’t be at the beach 24/7, if at all. Wearing a maxi dress during the summer or a cozy, supreme quality, button-up plaid shirt during the cooler months remind us of carefree days along the coast or at a beach bonfire.” Bacon notes details as simple as a button with a boat silhouette on it or a pair of cords in a great basic shade with a boat-embossed leather patch on the backside, are all people need to feel reminded of the beach. The result is that more “coastal clothing” is finding its way into offices, casual evening wear and social events. Julz Shea-Lawson, design director for Jarrett Bay Clothing Co. points out that the proliferation of upscale coastal brands has changed the mindset about what it means to wear “beach clothing.” Written By Taylor Downs
72 | triangle style
“Comfort is always important in coastal-styled clothing, but even more so in the fall and winter lines,” says Shea-Lawson. “For the new Jarrett Bay Clothing Co. line, we imagined what one might wear on an evening stroll on the beach when the weather is crisp, but not cold. Or, what might be worn at a casual gathering on a docked Jarrett Bay boat. The styles are built for comfort and style and, as with all Jarrett Bay clothing, are impeccably made.” Designers like Shea-Lawson stay on top of new trends by attending tradeshows, monitoring Pinterest boards and simply “store-stalking,” or watching people in store to see what they’re wearing, what they’re looking at and what they’re talking about. “Some brands focus more on men’s lines than women’s and vice versa,” says Bacon. “Or some brands stay more aligned with the strictly traditional beachwear look of shorts, tees and cover-ups. Then, you have brands like Jarrett Bay that are reaching for a more upscale market while staying authentic to coastal life with styles that are effortlessly pulled together.”

Bacon and Shea-Lawson note that with the rising tide of demand for “beachwear” or “boatwear,” there is room for numerous brands to succeed with customers.

“Again, it goes back to choice,” says Bacon. “People in the Triangle are lucky. There are enough choices out there so that everyone gets to pick their beach vibe.” And, as coastal-wearing-clothes people implicitly understand, whether the clothes actually make it to the beach or not is beside the point. Taylor Downs is the retail sales manager for Jarrett Bay, which is sold online and at various retail locations throughout the South. In Raleigh, they are located at North Hills. “Coastal-inspired clothes, whether it’s t-shirts, long-sleeved henleys or colorful flannels, are no longer being diminished as lower-end clothing,” says Shea-Lawson. She notes people are expecting more upscale, travel pieces that can transition seamlessly from daytime to dinner, while still maintaining a beach-inspired level of comfort. The new clothing hitting storefronts stands out as an authentic and well-designed addition to the resort wear typically found in beach- clothing type stores.

There's a popular but mistaken idea floating around in our cultural consciousness: the notion that you're either a morning person or you're not. We envy the people who have the seemingly effortless ability to get up at 5 a.m. and spend a couple of hours being productive before they even leave for work, while we resign ourselves to wearing out the snooze button until it's impossible to ignore our looming responsibilities any longer. But we're not as helpless to our internal clocks as we sometimes think. Anyone can build the habit of being a morning person, but if you're not already in the habit of getting up early, it might take a good reason to motivate you to get out of bed. Here are six ways being up before the sun will improve your life.
HAVING A JUMP START ON THE DAY FEELS GREAT
Yes, the few seconds it takes to drag your sleepy, fuzzy-minded self out from under the warm blankets are a drag. But after a few minutes, once you're up, dressed, and maybe making a cup of coffee or tea, you'll be so glad you made the effort. You now have access to a whole hour, maybe two, that you would usually sleep away. What will you do with that time? As you become a morning person, you'll start to feel like the early hours are a secret sanctuary that late sleepers are missing out on.
BEING UP EARLY MOTIVATES YOU TO GET MORE DONE
So you've made the effort to get out of bed, and you now have a precious hour or two at your disposal. Combine this with the pressure of knowing you have to go to work and take care of other duties later in the day, and you'll feel extra appreciative of your morning time and want to squeeze all the enjoyment and productivity out of it that you can. Maybe that means you meditate, go for a run, or prepare dinner ahead of time. Whatever you want to get done, knowing your time is valuable and limited is a great incentive to accomplish it.

YOU HAVE TIME TO WORK ON YOUR OWN PROJECTS
Do you ever feel like your time belongs more to your boss, spouse, kids, and friends than it does to you? Getting up early is an excellent antidote to that feeling. By carving out an hour or two before your responsibilities set in, you claim a piece of the day for yourself to work on the things that you love. What do you wish you had more time for -- exercise, learning a new language, writing a novel, reading more books? That's what your morning time is for. Investing time in yourself is a key component of happiness.
YOU BECOME MORE DISCIPLINED
Getting up early is certainly doable and worthwhile, but that doesn't mean it's easy. Sometimes it feels like a herculean effort to get out of bed, while it's all too easy to hit the snooze button and waste away the early hours without even waking up or thinking about it. When you put in the effort to get up, day after day, even when you don't want to, you're strengthening your ability to ignore fleeting, fall | 77
OUR BUSINESS IS OPENING DOORS
momentary desires in favor of working on your long-term goals. This ability is a crucial component of success in any area of your life. As your early-rising willpower increases, you might find that you're making better choices or being more productive in other spheres too.

Your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Think about it: how do you feel when you've slept late, don't have time to shower, can't find a pair of matching socks, and have to skip breakfast to get to work on time? The frazzled, scattered feeling of the morning probably carries over into the afternoon. When you've had a calm, productive morning, the opposite is true: you'll feel more relaxed and capable during the rest of the day. Everything you do feels more satisfying when it happens after you've already had a great morning.
BREAKFAST MIGHT BECOME YOUR FAVORITE MEAL OF THE DAY
If you like to eat breakfast, rising early lets you get a jump start on your nutrition for the day. Scarfing down cereal or a granola bar because you don't have time to cook is now a thing of the past. Do you love omelets, but rarely have time to make them? Want to try your hand at blending up a green smoothie? Getting up early gives you the opportunity to have a delicious, healthy breakfast every day. What a great reason to get out of bed! Waking up early gives you more control over your time and your life. You'll have time to work on goals you've always wanted to achieve, feel more satisfied with your accomplishments throughout the day, and boost your level of motivation. The only thing standing between you and a great morning is your snooze button, and now that you have six good reasons to get up, the snooze button is no match for your willpower. TS

Yet it is the boyish police detective Murdoch, a devout Catholic in a time when Catholics were frowned upon, that offers the most appeal. Perhaps he is a bit too nice or a bit too naive but I find that remarkably refreshing. That aside, it is the emerging science of crime solving, including the discovery of “finger marks,” that makes Murdoch’s enthusiasm all the more interesting to watch. Plus he comes across a great many notable characters, such as Thomas Edison and Sherlock Holmes. Murdoch’s daily companions however are the pretty coroner (on whom he has a boyish crush), his boss (a hotheaded but likable Scotsman with a penchant for whiskey and a wife in the temperance movement), and the somewhat wacky young constable who recites poetry and is writing a science fiction novel. And like all good mysteries, there are criminals to catch and murders to solve.
FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant star in this thoroughly engaging film about the real life story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a woman whose solo performance at Carnegie Hall received a standing ovation. The ovation was not because she had a lovely voice. But rather because she did not. She had begun that evening’s performance well enough, singing along in a perfectly acceptable way, then out of nowhere, she screeched the wrong notes in the most unexpected places. The audience was beside itself with laughter. Florence’s previous recitals had received the highest of praise. Unknown to her, that praise came from a hand picked audience: friends and members of musical societies Florence had founded or strangers her husband, St. Clair Bayfield, felt would be “devoted to Florence and her music” for a financial token of appreciation. Neither Bayfield nor her friends, including Toscanini, had the heart to crush the intensity of Florence’s great passion, to tell her she didn’t have the voice she thought she had.

Yet, when all is said and done, we can treat ourselves to the comic experience of listening to Florence’s unsettling voice in her album, “The Glory (????) of the Human Voice.”
