REOPENING RAISES THE ROOF By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com

Oxnard-- It was a great evening at the Murphy Auto Museum, Feb. 22, as the venue held its grand reopening at its new location, 1930 Eastman Avenue.

T

HE evening had all the elements of a vintage car event, including classic cars, live music, and an art show in the Fireball Gallery that was loaded with great pieces of art. The evening also had food, refreshments, and the star of the show, the classic cars, that accentuated the point that the classics are a pure art form. The team had a dedication ceremony before they opened officially, and David Neel introduced Founder Dr. Daniel Murphy, saying it's the third Murphy Auto Museum. "It's a lot of work to find a place to go," Murphy said. Fireball Tim Lawrence thanked Neel, who he called his partner in crime. "Many of you came to the museum and helped move cars," he said. "It was an empty shell, and it was our job to try and create a place where you guys can come and hopefully experience something different. Something you wouldn't necessarily get at the Peterson, the Mullin, or any of the other car museums, which are all fabulous. Our job was to create a museum for all of us, for every person, where you can walk in and remember that I had that car." The Fireball Gallery, he said, had eight contributing artists who came out for the reopening event. Artist Tommy Hollenstein created an entire wall of art that was acrylic on masonite board. He creates all his art from his wheelchair. He broke his neck while he was mountain bike riding 35 years ago.

State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, along with Ventura County District Three and Five Candidates Carmen Ramirez and Kim Marra Stephenson, joined forces to attack the big oil money.

"I apply paint to the tires, and I apply it layer-by-layer and create various abstract and creative art," he said. "I've got some skate decks that I've created here. Some of the decks have about 30 layers of paint." Hollenstein had his 1953 panel truck in Malibu one day, and he met Fireball. n Museum Grand, see page 5

press conference fires the crowd up By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- It was a standing room only crowd at the GOOD Club (The Greater Oxnard Organization of Democrats) on Feb. 22, as the Not For Sale Press Conference & Day of Action brought motivated voters out to spread the word about the upcoming election. The press conference featured State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, Oxnard Mayor Pro Tem, and Ventura County

District Five Supervisor Candidate Carmen Ramirez and District Three Supervisor Candidate and teacher Kim Marra Stephenson to the forefront to address issues. Ramirez and Stephenson are facing a barrage of attack ads on television, along with a push poll spreading false facts about both candidates. Burum campaign hits the streets of Oxnard By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- As the Ventura County Supervisor race heats up and there is less than two weeks before the March 3, primary, Independent Candidate Jeff Burum has taken his message and jobs platform to the streets of Oxnard. Burum is running against Oxnard Mayor Tim Flynn, Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez, Oxnard School District Trustee Veronica Robles-Solis, and Port of Hueneme Commissioner Jess Herrera. the PAC money and said he hasn't benefitted from that money at all. "We've received many individual donations and my own contributions of about $40,000," he said. Burum had a group of faithful volunteers with him, and he thinks they're wonderful. They're always with us," he said. "They've known me for years, they know what I stand for, they know our platform, and they are the ones who helped me prepare for all the debates, which we won, all four." Burum is from California, and he said he's an environmentalist who

advocates clean air, water, and land. "There's no doubt about it," he said. "We all know that a good environment is good for the economy." He pointed out another problem and said we're in a recession. "We're going into our seventh year of a recession, while the rest of the country, including our state, is doing well," he said. "It's all about leadership, and it means we have to have more jobs. We need more jobs and more industry that's clean and works with our environment. We can do that." n Burum campaign, see page 4

Robinson reviews the high homeless death rate in Ventura County By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- During public comments at the Feb. 18, Oxnard City Council meeting, P.W. Robinson raised the issue of the homeless death rate in Oxnard.

R

OBINSON initially reported on the statistic Feb. 4 and returned to remind the public and the press attending that it is a severe issue. He noted that Oxnard has the highest homeless death rate in the nation. "The homeless death rate in Ventura County is 4.91 percent," he said. "In San Francisco, it is 1.67 percent, and in Los Angeles County, it's 1.71 percent." He said that equates to 82 dead people out of 1,600 people in Ventura County. "That's so much higher than every place I could find, and I looked," he said. "We have a full spectrum of homeless people here, and you also have the lowest number of sheltered homeless in

any county I could find. That isn't close; you're at six percent. That is remarkably low." Recently, Robinson said a friend was riding her bike, and she was knocked off it by a policeman named "Bernardo," and she couldn't get his badge number because he wouldn't give it. "She had to go inside," Robinson said. "He was pulling into the cop shop when he almost killed her." The day after being struck, Robinson said the police pulled her friend over while she was walking, so officer Bernardo could drive by and wave. "That's the real Oxnard, in case anyone wants to know," he said. He read through some numbers and said the shelter needed $965,000 to get the shelter through the end of the year. "They want $965,000 for 100 people in the shelter for five months," he said. "There's no way to spend that much money. Even if you tried and cared, you couldn't. Then there's the $535,000 for the Plaza Park 42. Whatever happened to them. We're going to keep asking these questions and push for answers."

Frosted thoughts By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Hi there, my name is Chris. I am a community journalist, and I take this job seriously. I report on a lot of fun things, but I also report on issues that directly relate to how people live their lives. Some people want to know which side of the political spectrum I fall into, and I will tell you that I fall into no spectrum. I report the news as fairly and accurately as I can. The only time my politics come into play is when I walk into a polling booth, and I pull the curtain shut. Many people see me out in the field reporting on the issues, and that is what I am supposed to be doing. One example of this is when a political action group funds their point of view; my job is to get a response on both sides. Tell the story and let the reader decide what is right and what is wrong.

When I write these stories, I i n c l u d e details, lots of them, because knowledge is power. I have met way too many journalists who think it's a good idea to give the basics and maybe a quote or two then get out of the story. Anyone whose been to city hall and attended a city council meeting knows there is a lot to report about. Let's get something straight; I don't work in sound bites, and the public should be able to pick up their paper and

see what's happening in their community in detail. We live in a hectic world, and many people don't have the time to stop their w o r k d a y, k i d ' s h om e wor k , family time, or whatever else they do to fit into a city's schedule. If I report on one side of an issue, you can bet that I am looking for the other side every time. People have told me it takes guts to do that, but I don't see it. Sure, I have paid the price for this style of journalism. I had my side-view mirror on my car shot off after one story, and there have

been times when I was crossing the street to get lunch, and people in vehicles who see me speed up. I wrote about a fight between two city agencies once, and my former boss in the central time zone sent me an angry email and accused me of going out of my way to write a controversial story in a peaceful town. I sent my boss the city report that outlined the problem, and I got in hot water because it was a report that no one ever spoke about. Sorry, but my job is to inform and educate the public. So, I got in trouble for researching my topic. Fortunately, the Tri County Sentry lives in no one's back pocket, and it never will. When I was a rookie, I had a boss who used to tell me that if everyone loves what you write, you're doing a crappy job. A good paper allows you to agree, disagree, and make an informed opinion based on the facts. I don't try to influence anyone. I write about issues that I totally agree with and things that I disagree with vehemently. It has nothing to do with what I write. That's how I sleep at night.

From the desk of

MIKE BLOOMBERG Dear Reader, Thank you for taking the time to learn about The Greenwood Initiative. As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have been possible in America — and that’s true. But I also know that because of the artificial barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white. Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Street Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.

THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods

Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New York, I was proud to take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increased education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amount of affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressively to combat inequality nationwide. I understand that undoing generations of systematic discrimination won’t happen overnight, but we can make progress with a clear vision and a comprehensive plan. I’ve included a pamphlet along with this letter that lays out my plan. When I’m President, implementing The Greenwood Initiative will be a top priority.

Join me in ending the systemic inequality that has held Black Americans back for too long! Sincerely, Mike Bloomberg

Stephenson and Ramirez for supervisor 2020, with major funding and sponsored by the California Resources Corporation. Ramirez welcomed the crowd and told them that an oil company is trying to buy the election. "They're making false statements and spending all the money in the world," she said. "They're on the verge of bankruptcy. Think about that." Ramirez handed the microphone to Jackson, who delivered on Ramirez's promise to rile up the crowd. Jackson said she was excited to stand with Ramirez and Stephenson, who she called

future community leaders. "I'm in my last year in the Senate because of term limits, so I don't have to run for reelection," she said with a smile. "You recognize how important this election is. I have known Carmen Ramirez for 40 years, and she is one of the finest public servants I have ever met. When I met Carmen, she was fighting for the rights of the underserved people, particularly in this community, and she has never stopped fighting for this community. She has never stopped working to level that playing field, so the people of Oxnard and in the fifth district will have the ability to have a fair shot at the American dream. It

was a promise made to all of us, and it is one we need to keep." She cited Ramirez's work against the LNG (liquefied natural gas) Plant in 2004. "I will tell you; there was no one who fought harder against that effort to continue dumping," Jackson said. "The environmental injustice of LNG trying to put oil and gas on the shores and the backs of this community. She was there day and night, at every hearing, and she was there to make sure that never happened." Jackson said she did the same thing NRG plant. "Carmen was there for every minute of every hearing," Jackson said. "Whether they

were here, whether they were in Sacramento, it didn't matter. This woman was the mama bear and protected her people. She wants the opportunity to keep fighting for this community. After charging up the crowd, Jackson set her sights on the oil and gas company that she reiterated was almost bankrupt. "They are the biggest polluters and the biggest dirty industry in this country that is responsible, in a great measure, for climate change that has caused us to suffer serious fires, and weather changes," she said. "There are

challenges there every day to whether or not we have a future that we promised to our children and our grandchildren. This is the industry that is fighting against her. This is the industry that doesn't want to see the great doctor, Kim Stephenson, representing the third district. These are two women who share our values." Jackson accused the oil and gas industry of raping the land and turning it into money and profit for them. "Then they leave us holding the bag," she said. "Those are the

people spending all the money. Are they the people of Ventura County?" The crowd screamed "no" vehemently. "There is a message there, and I want to make sure the people of the third and fifth district understand," Jackson said. "The oil companies don't think you know what they're up to. They don't think that you understand that they are the bad guys, and these are the great gals. The truth is these are two awesome leaders, and they are going to fight for the values of this community."

least 10 years, and there is no excuse for the condition that we have. The same with financial management. The city manager, Alex Nguyen, talked about years of financial mismanagement. He specifically pointed to the last five years." He cited the PACC as an example. "They let it go between $1-2 million into deficit for the last five years," he said. "That was in the paper several times when we were going through the budget. Carmen Ramirez was on that staff. Now they tell us it needs to be repaired; it has asbestos, and it doesn't meet code." Burum wants to know what they are going to do about it. "You haven't done anything," he said. Burum pointed out that he isn't involved in the push polls in any way. "I don't know anything about it except for what I've read," he said. "The problem I've got is you've got special interest groups, and I'm against special interest groups. I would limit their contributions, so the public is able to vote. I am a populist. I go right to the people for everything they want, and we execute that." Burum pointed out that it's been a big problem for the Democrats. "Tim Flynn received quite a bit of money from the CRC (California Resources Corporation)," he said. "That came out in the debates, and I made sure that happened. Now, magically, the CRC has issued another form 700, and now Jess Herrera, along with Kelly Long, received the CRC money. Magically, Tim Flynn has been left out. He made a clear point that his brother-

in-law works for Shell. They are the half owner of the CRC. How does he get away with that? He should be held responsible for the pollution that has been done in this community." Burum pointed out that Flynn and Herrera received money from the CRC. "The Democrats are hypocrites," Burum said. "On one hand they say no to one candidate, and they say it's okay to the other. Which is it?" He proposes doing it his way, good economy, plus a good environment. "And I'm straight up with people," he said. "No special interest groups." Phone banking efforts, he said, have gone well. "Everybody is very supportive," he said. "I may have one or two people who don't want to talk to me because they are hard left, along with Carmen (Ramirez), but that's okay. I think with the campaign with Bernie Sanders, Carmen Ramirez's association with that type of thinking, that will eventually come out, and nobody wants it or needs it." He asks what that type of thinking leads to. "More homeless, more unaffordable housing, and no jobs," he said. "The only good thing they can advocate is more taxes. More taxes mean everything is more unaffordable. Everybody knows that California has the highest taxes and the highest poverty. Figure it out." Burum said the campaign taught him a lot. "I want to be humble, approachable and a good listener," he said. "We're constantly taking in new volunteers and ideas. The other thing is there are a lot of conservative Latinos that belong to the Democratic Party. The Democratic Party has never stood for conservative ideas, such as family, God, and country. My message is why are you with the Democratic Party? You should be with the conservative groups, Republican, the Tea Party, or whatever they decide." For more information, Jeff welcomes everyone to his headquarters at 210 W. Fourth Street or visit Burum4Supervisor.com. "It's a meet-and-greet building," he said. "It's a local business, and we support them, and we'd love to see more people down there."

Burum campaign continued from page 1

Burum agrees that Ventura County needs housing but said there are other programs the county can use to spur business growth. "The states that are receiving more people have lower taxes and more jobs," he said. "That's why we've had a negative migration rate over the last five years." He's ready to be the economic champion on the board of supervisors. "We don't have anybody like that," he said. "Why not have a candidate on the Board of Supervisors who's a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), an MBA (Masters Of Business Administration) who managed billions of dollars for the Air Force, when I was the chief of budget at several bases and the chief of budgets for US Central Command during Desert Storm." The state has three opportunity zones that already exist, he said, and they exist in Oxnard. "What are we doing with those zones," he said. "I don't see new businesses coming, in spite of the fact that we can offer significant capital gains reductions down to zero." Burum also pointed out that Governor Gavin Newsome started "Cal Competes," and they brought back free enterprise zones. "We used to have free enterprise zones here, but they expired in 2015," he said. "Let's bring them back, and we'll start with Channel Islands Harbor, which is totally dilapidated." Burum said the harbor became dilapidated under Carmen Ramirez and Tim Flynn. "Don't let them blame somebody else," he said. "They've been in office for at

TRI-COUNTY SENTRY, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2020

NEWS City receives monthly investment report By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- The Oxnard City Council received the latest Monthly Investment Report for the period ending Dec. 31, 2019. during the Feb. 18, meeting City Treasurer Phil Molina presented the item to the council and said laws require him to make the report public by Jan. 31.

T

HE goal, he said, is to invest 100 percent of the city's available cash with the interest rates at 1.9 percent for its five-year investments. The city needs to get as much money as it can for every dollar it holds. For normal operations, the city needs to retain $3 million in the bank on any particular day. "The city is investing 97 percent of its available cash," he said. "That's because we have a dedicated staff of Eden Alomeri and Martha Gweru. They keep on me regularly as to the cash balances and what's happening with the investments." Molina broke the funds down and told the council the treasury doesn't invest any money from the successor agency account. "Whatever money we make, we have to turn it over to the state," he said. "We do invest the general fund and worker's compensation account, and the parking citations." The total money in all four accounts is $15.841 million as of Dec. 31, 2019. The city has $6.128 million of idle cash to invest. "The amount we have invested is $245.085 million," he said. "That's because it is a cumulative amount versus the bank statement amount. When you look at the total amount invested, and you compare that to the total available cash, our efficiency level is 97.74 percent. I can guarantee you that few other cities or districts have that level of efficiency on their investments." Molina then tries to get the best rates available on the market; after assuring, they have the funds available to cover their daily liquidity and investing as much as possible. "When we do that, we're looking at the cost of the investments, $245.085

million," he said. "The par value of those is $245.110 million. How did we do that? We did that by going aggressively against our brokers and tell them we're not going to pay 100 percent of that face value; we're going to pay 97, 98, 96 percent. It's our good money, and if you want it, you'll let us buy at a lower cost." The market value estimates, he said, are $245.026 million because of the inverted investment return with a

1.9 percent investment for five years. "Total earnings for the period, however, are still $386, 695 for one month," he said. "That's an earned interest yield for the month of 2.021 percent. If we had to sell those investments today at the market value of $245.026 million, we would lose $58,438. The reason why we do that is for full transparency, so everybody knows what is going on." When the city buys an investment,

Letter to the editor

Molina said they stick with it until it matures. "When we buy a callable investment, the issuer can say I want to buy back that investment earlier than it's maturity," he said. "That is happening today, and it will happen again tomorrow. We have about $8 million being called on us early." During public comments, Al Velasquez asked Molina if the $245 million include the unrestricted cash reserves that are in the additional 175 special funds, including the enterprise fund cash surplus reserves. Molina said the city invests all the cash from all the funds, and he referenced a report he made with Chief Financial Officer Kevin Riper a couple of months ago. During Council Comments, Bert Perello congratulated Molina and his staff and commented his department does a good job of generating money, and he explains it well. He asked about individuals pay their utility bill with a credit card, the credit card charge is paid for by the city. "Has it been resolved that we can charge the credit card fee to the resident using the credit card," he asked. Molina said the city was working with Elavon six months ago, and he was pushing them as hard as he could to make them the provider. "Once that is accomplished, the intent was to bring a resolution to the council to pass on those fees," he said. "For the last six months, I have not been able to be directly involved with that process. I hope to be back in it soon. It costs us $500,000 a year, and it's growing."

Dear Editor, Fun Fact: Oxnard Measure B’s “transparency” provisions include veto clauses. Yes, you read that correctly. Copied straight from the text of Measure B: “All agreements requiring City Council approval must be posted on the City’s website and made available to the public prior to City Council action unless determined otherwise by the city attorney." "All labor agreements and all agreements greater than $200,000 must be posted on the City’s website and be made available to the public at least 10 days prior to City Council action, unless waived by a twothirds vote of the City Council.” You can read this yourself on page 56 of your voter guide. There are NO limitations in this veto language … it can be done for ANY reason. This is just one of the dirty tricks written into Measure B ... which is really an incumbent protection act. It uses opinion poll-tested buzzwords like “accountability” and “transparency” to trick you into extending council term limits ... and handcuffing the city council’s political challengers. And City Hall is shamelessly spending YOUR money on political consultants and glossy mail pieces to get YOU to vote for it. For more information about Measure B and the many reasons to vote against it, visitwww. NoOnOxnardMeasureB.com. And Vote NO on Oxnard Measure B. Please forward this to Oxnard friends and neighbors so that they, too, will know what's going on. Aaron Starr starr@movingoxnardforward.org 805-804-9101

Why is Proposition 13 even necessary? Proposition 13 proponents argue that this money influx is needed to correct peeling paint, leaking roofs, overcrowding – you name it – which anyone can witness by visiting a public school or public charter school in California. Need we disagree with this? Probably not. But you also can’t disagree that many infrastructure elements in this state also need attention. But why is Proposition 13 needed anyway? Recall when voters were asked years ago to approve the state lottery system? Proponents argued that if passed,

the state’s school systems would be flooded with money. This may have been true for the first few years or so. Then the state leaders thought “Hey, with all the lottery money to fund the school system, perhaps we can reduce the Government’s portion of the budget which was formerly going to California schools and apply it elsewhere (maybe retirement obligations?).” This is the typical “bait and switch” used by governments – at all levels, including the local level. A prime example of this was written in

the VCStar on 8 December 2019 by Dan Walters – CALmatters. Examples used in the OpEd were the cities of Sacramento and Oakland where sales taxes and parcel taxes were increased. The cited examples included the governments convincing voters to agree to tax increases for infrastructure improvements – for example, improving popular services such as “public safety or parks/recreation” – then the fungibility kicked in. This increase in tax revenue money then freed up more money to pay for other

things like perhaps retirement fund obligations without an actual increase in the popular services mentioned to sell the tax increase. This is not to say that Proposition 13 money is not needed for renovation and/or new construction for our school system assets. However, one can’t help but wonder how we got to this point. SENIOR Savvy Senior

When should dementia patients stop driving? Dear Savvy Senior Is there a good rule of thumb on when dementia patients should stop driving? My 82-year-old mom has early stage Alzheimer’s disease but still drives herself around town just fine. Inquiring Daughter Dear Inquiring Most doctors agree that people with moderate to severe dementia should never get behind the wheel, but in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, driving performance should be the determining factor of when to stop driving, not the disease itself. With that said, it’s also important to realize that as your mom’s driving skills deteriorate over time from the disease, she might not recognize she has a problem. So, it’s very important that you work closely with her doctor to monitor her driving and help her stop when it is no longer safe for her to drive. Here are some additional tips that can help you. Watch for Warning Signs The best way to keep tabs on your mom’s driving is to take frequent rides with her watching out for key warning signs. For example: Does she have trouble remembering routes to familiar places? Does she drive at inappropriate speeds, tailgate, drift between lanes or fail to observe

traffic signs? Does she react slowly or make poor driving decisions? Also, has your mom had any fender benders or tickets lately, or have you noticed any dents or scrapes on her vehicle? All of these are red flags. If you need some assessment help, hire a driver rehabilitation specialist who’s trained to evaluate older drivers. See AOTA.org/older-driver or ADED.net to locate one in your area. Transition Tips Through your assessments, if you believe it’s still safe for your mom to drive, you should start recommending some simple adjustments to ensure her safety, like driving only in daylight and on familiar routes, and avoiding busy roads and bad weather. Also, see if she will sign an Alzheimer’s “driving contract” (see ALZ.org/driving to print one) that designates someone to tell her when it’s no longer safe to drive. You may also want to consider getting a GPS car tracking device (like MotoSafety.com or AutoBrain. com) to help you keep an eye on her. These devices will let you track where she’s driving and allow you to set up zones and speed limits that will send you alerts to your smartphone when she exits an area, or if she’s driving too fast or braking harshly.

Therapist tries to restore elderly's dignity through music By Kelsey Rettke DEKALB, Ill. (AP)—Jen Conley still remembers her home phone number from growing up with her six siblings because her mother taught them to memorize the digits to the tune of “Mary Had A Little Lamb.” “Music is a wonderful mnemonic,” Conley said. “You can't often recite a poem from a decade ago but if you hear a song from a long time ago, those lyrics all come back.” Conley, 50, of DeKalb, is a music therapist and specializes in sessions for the elderly, dying and ailing. She's building her own private practice in Sycamore, and spends her days traveling to nursing homes, retirement communities and houses to play music for her clients, chat and offer her company. Since beginning her work as a music therapist in 1986, she's worked with clients in hospice settings, with dementia, and various forms of cognitive decline doing what she firmly believes is restoring their dignity. “I love their presence and gentle dignity,” Conley said. “Sort of like how a song can be imbued with all sort of layers, meaning and emotion, in older adults, you look at them, and they might be feeble, forgetful, don't know family, or not presented in a way that they would have been comfortable as a younger adult. “But I see it all,” she continued. “I see all that history, those stories, World War II, working in factories, providing for their generation, discovering technology. It's them. They laid those roads. They paid for us. How beautiful for me to come in a small way and give back.” To prepare for the hour-long sessions, Conley first will meet with the clients' family member or caregiver to ascertain what level of care they need. She'll learn if the elderly client has been self-isolating, has certain anxieties, what type of illness they have or how to encourage them to interact with those around them. For patients in hospice or with dementia, who are often non-verbal, sometimes she'll go in the session and play the harp. She also plays keyboard and violin, and sometimes will use the time to just have a conversation. “There's things you can do with tone and whole notes that also induce relaxation,” Conley said. “If I have a client who's having trouble with respiration or shallow breathing or in pain, I'm actually going to go in and not play music they know. I match my tempo with their respiration.” Other clients, who are often more engaging, will want to hear music that invokes special memories, like her sessions with 100-year-old Phyllis McCormick, who meets with Conley regularly at her home at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center. McCormick and Conley sang and clapped together as Conley played tunes on her keyboard. For McCormick especially, therapy sessions allow her to reminisce about her late husband, John McCormick, who played the trombone in a dance band, the Melvin Elliot Band from 1937 to 1942, until he enlisted in the army. “The music always makes me happy,” McCormick said. “It brings me back in time. I love those old songs. They bring the stories back to me, and I have a lot of stories.” Conley grew up in Rockford and says at one point, her family was known as the “Rockford von Trapps.” Her parents, Kathleen and Edward Jencks, instilled in her the magic of music from a young age, she said. Conley has continued the generational passion for music with her own daughters—Ellen Kauzlarich, a stay-at-home-mom who Conley calls a “wonderful harpist and vocalist,” and Nelle Conley, a grade school music teacher in Crystal Lake.

Time to Quit When your mom’s driving gets to the point that she can no longer drive safely, you’ll need to talk to her. It’s actually best to start having these conversations in the early stages of the disease, before she needs to quit driving, so she can

prepare herself. You also need to have a plan for alternative transportation (including a list of family, friends and local transportation options) that will help your mom get around after she stops driving. For tips on how to talk to your

Refuses to Quit If your mom refuses to quit, you have several options. First, suggest a visit to her doctor who can give her a medical evaluation, and prescribe that she stops driving. Older people will often listen to their doctor before they will listen to their own family. If she still refuses, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to see if they can help. Some states require doctors to report new dementia cases to the DMV, who can revoke the person’s license. If these fail, consider hiding her keys or just take them away. You could also disable her vehicle by disconnecting the battery, park it in another location so she can’t see it or have access to it or sell it. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Stalked by the fear that dementia is stalking you By Judith Graham Kaiser Health News Do I know I’m at risk for developing dementia? You bet. My father died of Alzheimer’s disease at age 72; my sister was felled by frontotemporal dementia at 58. And that’s not all: Two maternal uncles had Alzheimer’s, and my maternal grandfather may have had vascular dementia. (In his generation, it was called senility.) So what happens when I misplace a pair of eyeglasses or can’t remember the name of a movie I saw a week ago? “Now comes my turn with dementia,” I think. Then I talk myself down from that emotional cliff. Am I alone in this? Hardly. Many people, like me, who’ve watched this cruel illness destroy a family member, dread the prospect that they, too, might become demented. The lack of a cure or effective treatments only adds to the anxiety. Just this week, news emerged that another study trying to stop Alzheimer’s in people at extremely high genetic risk had failed. How do we cope as we face our fears and peer into our future? Andrea Kline, whose mother, as well as her mother’s sister and uncle, had Alzheimer’s disease, just turned 71 and lives in Boynton Beach, Florida. She’s a retired registered nurse who teaches yoga to seniors at community centers and assistedliving facilities. “I worry about dementia incessantly. Every little thing that goes wrong, I’m convinced it’s the beginning,” she told me. Because Kline has had multiple family members with Alzheimer’s, she’s more likely to have a genetic vulnerability than someone with a single occurrence in their family. But that doesn’t mean this condition lies in her future. A risk is just that: It’s not a guarantee. The age of onset is also important. People with close relatives struck by dementia early—before age 65— are more likely to be susceptible genetically. Kline was the primary caregiver for her mother, Charlotte Kline, who received an Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 1999 and passed away in 2007 at age 80. “I try to eat very healthy. I

exercise. I have an advance directive, and I’ve discussed what I want [in the way of care] with my son,” she said. “Lately, I’ve been thinking I should probably get a test for APOE4 [a gene variant that can raise the risk of developing Alzheimer’s], although I’m not really sure if it would help,” Kline added. “Maybe it would add some intensity to my planning for the future.” I spoke to half a dozen experts for this column. None was in favor of genetic testing, except in unusual circumstances. “Having the APOE4 allele [gene variant] does not mean you’ll get Alzheimer’s disease. Plenty of people with Alzheimer’s don’t have the allele,” said Mark Mapstone, a professor of neurology at the University of California-Irvine. “And conversely, plenty of people with the allele never develop Alzheimer’s.” Tamar Gefen, an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, strongly suggests having an in-depth discussion with a genetic counselor if you’re considering a test. “Before you say ‘I have to know,’ really understand what you’re dealing with, how your life might be affected, and what these tests can and cannot tell you,” she advised. Karen Larsen, 55, is a social worker in the Boston area. Her father, George Larsen, was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s at age 84 and died within a year in 2014. Larsen is firm: She doesn’t want to investigate her risk of having memory or thinking problems.

“I’ve already planned for the future. I have a health care proxy and a living will and long-term care insurance. I’ve assigned powers of attorney, and I’ve saved my money,” she said. “Eating a healthy diet, getting exercise, remaining socially engaged—I already do all that, and I plan to as long as I can.” “What would I do if I learned some negative from a test—sit around and worry?” Larsen said. Currently, the gold standard in cognitive testing consists of a comprehensive neuropsychological exam. Among the domains examined over three to four hours: memory, attention, language, intellectual functioning, problem-solving, visual-spatial orientation, perception and more. Brain scans are another diagnostic tool. CT and MRI scans can show whether parts of the brain have structural abnormalities or aren’t functioning optimally. PET scans (not covered by Medicare) can demonstrate the buildup of amyloid proteins—a marker of Alzheimer’s. Also, spinal taps can show whether amyloid and tau proteins are present in cerebrospinal fluid. A note of caution: While amyloid and tau proteins in the brain are a signature characteristic of Alzheimer’s, not all people with these proteins develop cognitive impairment. Several experts recommend that people concerned about their Alzheimer’s risk get a baseline set of neuropsychological tests, followed by repeat tests if and when they start experiencing worrisome symptoms. n Stalked, see page 8

Self-styled daredevil dies in crash after rocket launch BARSTOW (AP)—A self-styled daredevil died Saturday after a rocket in which he launched himself crashed into the ground, a colleague and a witness said. “Mad” Mike Hughes died after the homemade rocket crashed on private property near Barstow about 1:52 p.m. near Highway 247, the Daily Press of Victorville reported. Waldo Stakes, a colleague who was at the rocket launch, said Hughes, 64, was killed. “It was unsuccessful, and he passed away,” Stakes told The Associated Press. He declined further comment. Justin Chapman, a freelance journalist, told the AP that he and his wife witnessed the crash. The rocket appeared to rub against the launch apparatus, which might have torn the parachutes attached to it, Chapman said. The rocket came straight down into the ground, Chapman said. According to a San Bernardino County Sheriff 's Department statement, deputies were called to the event. “A man was pronounced deceased after the rocket crashed in the open desert during a rocket launch event,” the statement said. The sheriff 's department did not identify the person who died. In March 2018, Hughes, who believed the Earth is flat, propelled himself about 1,875 feet into the air before a hard landing in the Mojave Desert. “My story really is incredible,” Hughes told the AP at the time. “It's got a bunch of story lines—the garage-built thing. I'm an older guy. It's out in the middle of nowhere, plus the Flat Earth. The problem is it brings out all the nuts also, people questioning everything. It's the downside of all this.”

SENIOR 75 years after Iwo Jima, a veteran remembers the fight By Joanne Kimberlin CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP)—Eddie Vincek is a survivor. He's made it to 95. Still stands tall, with remarkably few ailments. Still lives with his wife in their longtime house in rural Chesapeake, where he putters around the flower beds of their 4-acre yard. Seventy-five years ago, Vincek beat some other odds—surviving the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the last and bloodiest struggles of World War II in the Pacific. More than 6,000 American troops never made it off that tiny island near Japan. Another 20,000 or so were wounded. Vincek hit the beach on invasion day—Feb. 19, 1945—and stayed until the monthlong fight was over, emerging with barely a scratch. “I couldn't believe it,” he said. “It felt like I was one of the few walking out under my own power.” Conversation flows easily with Vincek—he's a sharp and sunny guy—but press him about Iwo Jima and you'll encounter a bit of a logjam. His eyes shift away and his words start circling, retreating to a handful of phrases he long ago became comfortable with. I'm not a hero. I just did my job. I was just one of the boys. I was just another Marine. Maybe so, but out of the 16 million Americans who served in the military during WWII, only 3% were still alive in 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Nearly 300 slip away daily—precious, firsthand reminders that as tense as the world seems today, things have been worse. Much worse. And not so long ago. Raised on a dairy farm in upstate New York, Vincek was 18 when he joined the Marines in April 1943, about a year and a half after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and America plunged into a war that was already burning across the globe. After boot camp, Vincek was sent briefly to Norfolk, where he met a local girl named Mary Roth at a church polka dance. Later she'd become his wife. But first, he had to get through “Iwo,” as he calls it. The 8-mile-square island, located

about 700 miles south of Japan, was home to several Japanese airfields guarded by 20,000 troops dug into a tangle of caves, pill boxes, bunkers and trenches. Taking the island would not just dent enemy air operations, but give the Allies a base of their own closer to the Japanese mainland. Three-quarters of a century later, Vincek has no problem volunteering the basics: “I was a private first class with the 5th Marine Division, 28th Marine Regiment, 1st Battalion, Company A.” He'll tell you that they trained in Hawaii for the invasion, and that the voyage from there to Saipan, where the assault force gathered, took 42 days and “it seemed like we'd never get there.” On invasion day, Vincek found himself in a landing craft, rushing toward the shallows at midmorning. Several previous days of bombing and shelling had done little to soften enemy defenses. When the mouth of Vincek's landing craft dropped open and he caught his first sight of “dead bodies, I remember saying to myself, ‘This is

no dream. This is for real.”' Resistance was so fierce that initial gains were measured in feet—how far a squad could manage to crawl forward through the sand that day. The iconic flag raising over Mount Suribachi took place four days in, but fighting went on for five weeks, with the final vicious stretch marked by hand-to-hand combat. “It took three Marine divisions to secure that island,” Vincek said. “Afterward, people questioned whether it was worth the cost—the human sacrifice. I just tried to follow orders. Look to my sergeant and stay with my squad. Do my share.” He lost some buddies. Won't go deeper than saying that. He brushes off questions about fear. Makes light of one of his own close calls, when shrapnel tore though his backpack. “I had a picture of Mary in there and you should've seen the holes it put in that picture!” After the war, the two got married in the same church where they'd met, St. Mary's in Bowers Hill. They bought some land across from her parent's farm on Shillelagh

Road. They built a house, stuck an American flag in the front yard and had three children. For 42 years, Vincek worked at Globe Iron Construction Company and made a point of being involved in his community. He and Mary were pillars of the Grassfield Ruritan Club, Meals on Wheels and other causes. And rarely, in all those years, did he ever mention Iwo Jima. “We always knew he was there,” said daughter Anne Gwynn, “but we never asked about it—out of respect. It was just something that always seemed private to him.” That's common enough among war vets. Who could truly understand except those who were there? But unlike many others, Vincek says, he's never had nightmares about it or felt haunted by what he witnessed or had to do. “I just never saw any reason to talk much about it, to bring it all up,” he said. “I didn't do anything special. Please make sure you say that. I was just another Marine. Just doing my job.”

“Trumpy lie.” He did not have a heart attack, Bloomberg’s camp explained, trying to differentiate its candidate’s health status. He had stents. The former New York mayor, according to the campaign, had coronary stents inserted two decades ago after a cardiac test indicated they might be useful. Feathers still ruffled, the two candidates went at it again on the debate stage. “I think the one area, maybe, that Mayor Bloomberg and I share, you have two stents, as well,” Sanders said Thursday to his rival onstage. Bloomberg responded, “ Twenty-five years ago.” “When it comes to politics, personal health is just one more issue to try and leverage,” said Arthur Caplan, a professor of bioethics at NYU School of Medicine in New York City. That got us wondering how this information fits into the facts voters weigh. And in evaluating a candidate’s longterm health or electability, does it really matter whether a patient got a stent as part of treatment for a heart attack, like Sanders, or for another reason, such as to relieve chest pain or following a cardiac stress test, like Bloomberg?

“In this day and age, with the way technology has advanced and the skill sets of the cardiologists, I would say they are practically the same. We expect good results for both,” said Dr. Hadley Wilson, a practicing cardiologist in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a member of the American College of Cardiology’s board of trustees. Stents are almost always used when a person is having a heart attack. Heart attacks can occur when plaque breaks off inside the blood vessels of the heart, causing a blockage. To open the blocked artery, physicians insert stents, which are small, wire-mesh tubes. Afterward, patients are treated with medications to reduce the risk of subsequent heart attacks. Back when Bloomberg got his, they were commonly used in nonemergency situations to prop open narrowing arteries, with the thought that might prevent a heart attack, said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a cardiologist in New York and a spokesperson for the American Heart Association. But, since then, “we learned stents don’t prevent a heart attack and that using medication might be equally beneficial,” Steinbaum said,

adding that the best preventive measures are lifestyle choices, such as eating a good diet, exercising and not smoking. Patients still sometimes get stents to alleviate symptoms, such as chest pain, or for other reasons. Thursday’s debate also highlighted the broader question: Just how much of a candidate’s medical history is fair game for public consumption? Sanders, who faced criticism in October for delays in reporting his condition, said he has since released “the full report of that heart attack” ? including letters from his primary care doctor and two cardiologists attesting to his overall health and recovery. But candidate Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said Sanders had not provided enough detail? and neither, he said, had the others. “Under President Obama, the standard was that the president would release full medical records, do a physical and release the readout,” he said during the debate. “Now, President Trump lowered that standard. He said just a letter from a doctor is enough. And a lot of folks on this stage are n Presidential fitness, see page 8

TRI-COUNTY SENTRY, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2020

HEALTH Stalked continued from page 2

“When it comes to thinking and memory, everyone is different,” said Frederick Schmitt, a neurology professor at the University of Kentucky. Having baseline results is “very helpful” and “allows us to more carefully measure whether, in fact, significant changes have occurred” over time, he said. Nora Super, senior director of the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging, watched her father, Bill Super, and all three of his siblings succumb to Alzheimer’s disease over the course of several years— falling, she said, “like a row of dominoes.” One of her sisters was tested for the APOE4 genetic variant; results were negative. This is no guarantee of a dementia-free future, however, since hundreds of genes are implicated in Alzheimer’s, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia and vascular dementia. Rather than get genetic or neuropsychological tests, Super has focused on learning as much as she can about how to protect her brain. At the top of the list: managing her depression as well as stress. Both have been linked to dementia. Also, Super exercises routinely and eats a MINDstyle diet, rich in vegetables, berries, whole grains, nuts, fish and beans. She is learning French (a form of cognitive stimulation), meditates regularly and is socially and intellectually active. According to a growing body of research, physical inactivity, hearing loss, depression, obesity, hypertension, smoking, social isolation, diabetes and low education levels raise the risk of dementia. All of these factors are modifiable. What if Super started having memory problems? “I fear I would get really depressed,” she admitted. “Alzheimer’s is such a horrible disease: To see what people you love go through, especially in the early stages, when they’re aware of what’s happening but can’t do anything about it, is excruciating. I’m not sure I want to go through that.” Gefen of Northwestern said she tells patients that “if [cognitive testing] is something that’s going to stress you out, then don’t do it.” Nigel Smith, 49, had a change of heart after caring for his mother, Nancy Smith, 81, who’s in hospice care in the Boston area with Alzheimer’s. When he brought his mother in for a

neuropsychological exam in early 2017 and she received a diagnosis of moderate Alzheimer’s, she was furious. At that point, Nancy was still living in the family’s large home in Brookline, Massachusetts, which she refused to leave. Eventually, after his mother ended up in the hospital, Smith was given legal authority over her affairs and he moved her to a memory care unit. “Now, she’s deteriorated to the point where she has about 5% of her previous verbal skills,” Nigel said. “She smiles but she doesn’t recognize me.” Does he want to know if something like this might lie in his future? A couple of years ago, Smith said he was too afraid of Alzheimer’s to contemplate this question. Now he’s determined to know as much as possible, “not so much because I’m curious but so I can help prepare myself and my family. I see the burden of what I’m doing for my mother, and I want to do everything I can to ease that burden for them.” Kim Hall, 54, of Plymouth, Minnesota, feels a similar need for a plan. Her mother, Kathleen Peterson, 89, a registered nurse for over 50 years, was diagnosed with vascular dementia five years ago. Today, she resides in assisted living and doesn’t recognize most of her large family, including dozens of nieces and nephews who grew up with Hall. Hall knows her mother had medical issues that may have harmed her brain: a traumatic brain injury as a young adult, uncontrolled high blood pressure for many years, several operations with general anesthesia and an addiction to prescription painkillers. “I don’t share these, and that may work in my favor,” she said. Still, Hall is concerned. “I guess I want to know if I’m at risk for dementia and if there is anything I can do to slow it down,” she said. “I don’t want what happened to my mother to happen to me.” Probably, Hall speculated, she’ll arrange to take a neuropsychological exam at some point. Several years ago, when I was grieving my sister’s death from frontotemporal dementia, my doctor suggested that a baseline exam of this sort might be a good idea. I knew then I wouldn’t take him up on the offer. If and when my time with dementia comes, I’ll have to deal with it. Until then, I’d rather not know.

Judge halts plan to move virus patients to California city COSTA MESA (AP)—A court temporarily blocked the U.S. government from sending up to 50 people infected with a new virus from China to a Southern California city for quarantine after local officials argued that the plan lacked details about how the community would be protected from the outbreak.

A

federal judge issued a temporary restraining order late Friday to halt the transportation of anyone who has tested positive for the new coronavirus to Costa Mesa, a city of 110,000 in the heart of Orange County. U.S. District Judge Josephine L. Stanton scheduled a hearing on the issue Monday. City officials quickly sought court intervention after learning from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services that U.S. officials planned to start moving patients to a state-owned facility in Costa Mesa as early as Sunday.

They said in court documents that local officials were not included in the planning effort and wanted to know why the Fairview Developmental Center was considered a suitable quarantine site and what kind of safeguards were in place to prevent the possible transmission of the virus that has spread worldwide. “The city has not been part of any of the process that led to the consideration of the site, and it would be unfair to not include us in this kind of significant decision that has great impact on our community,” Mayor Katrina Foley told the Orange County Register. The California Health and Human Services Agency said in a statement Saturday that it was working with federal authorities to find a place for people who were evacuated from a quarantined cruise ship in Japan and taken to Travis Air Force Base in Northern California. Anyone who tested positive for the virus cannot stay at the base and must be sent either to the hospital or if they're not sick enough, isolated until the infection has cleared. The Fairview center in Costa Mesa

is being considered as a place to send them. “If Fairview were chosen, the federal government would be responsible for providing health care—easing the burden on our hospitals during flu season—and for providing robust security to ensure the public safety and public health of the surrounding community,” the state's statement said. Fairview is a 109-acre campus that was once home to about 2,000 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It's now nearly empty as the state has moved residents into community homes and other living situations. A state lawmaker whose district includes Costa Mesa said he feared the virus could travel through the facility's air vents. “The coronavirus patients should be treated humanely and with the best medical care available. But the first priority must be to contain the virus and make sure it doesn't jump into the local population,” Republican state Sen. John Moorlach said. Globally, the virus has infected nearly 78,000 people in 29 countries, and more than 2,300 have died.

'Time is everything': World braces for spread of new virus By Carla K. Johnson China's massive travel restrictions, house-to-house checks, huge isolation wards and lockdowns of entire cities bought the world valuable time to prepare for the global spread of the new virus. But with troubling outbreaks now emerging in Italy, South Korea and Iran, and U.S. health officials warning Tuesday it's inevitable it will spread more widely in America, the question is: Did the world use that time wisely and is it ready for a potential pandemic? “It's not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen—and how many people in this country will have severe illness,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier of the U.S. Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention. Some countries are putting price caps on face masks to combat price gouging, while others are using loudspeakers on trucks to keep residents informed. In the United States and many other nations, public health officials are turning to guidelines written for pandemic flu and discussing the possibility of school closures, telecommuting and canceling events. Countries could be doing even more: training hundreds of workers to trace the virus' spread from person to person and planning to commandeer entire hospital wards or even entire hospitals, said Dr. Bruce Aylward, the World Health Organization's envoy to China, briefing reporters Tuesday about lessons learned by the recently returned team of

international scientists he led. “Time is everything in this disease,” Aylward said. “Days make a difference with a disease like this.” The U.S. National Institutes of Health's infectious disease chief, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said the world is “teetering very, very close” to a pandemic. He credits China's response for giving other nations some breathing room. China locked down tens of millions of its citizens and other nations imposed travel restrictions, reducing the number of people who needed health checks or quarantines outside the Asian country. It “gave us time to really brush off our pandemic preparedness plans and get ready for the kinds of things we have to do,” Fauci said. “And we've actually been n New virus, see page 14

now saying that’s enough.” Buttigieg himself has yet to provide a full medical record. “But I am certainly prepared to get a physical, put out the results,” he said during the debate. “I think everybody here should be willing to do the same.” Some observers agree there’s no such thing as TMI (too much information) when it comes to POTUS (the president of the United States). “When the country is hiring someone to have their finger on the nuclear button, the expectation of personal privacy is very, very limited,” said David Blumenthal, head of the Commonwealth Fund and co-author of “The Heart of Power: Health and Politics in the Oval Office.” “It’s

Tri County Sentry (FEBRUARY 28, 2020) a.indd 8

hard to imagine something [healthrelated] that would not be relevant.” That argument, though, doesn’t always hold up. When he ran for president in 2008, the then-70-year-old Sen. John McCain released more than 1,000 pages of his medical records. By contrast, the campaigning Donald Trump initially released a glowing letter from his personal physician that concluded he would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency.” After criticism that the letter lacked specifics, Trump added information on his height, weight and cholesterol levels and went on to become the oldest president, at age 70, to take office, beating out Ronald Reagan, who was just weeks shy of that milestone on Inauguration

Day in 1981. This year, candidates Bloomberg and Sanders are both 78; former Vice President Joe Biden, 77; and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, 70. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is 59, and Buttigieg is the youngest, at 38. Anything that might be “relevant to a candidate’s ability and competence to govern and their longevity of service” should be disclosed, said Blumenthal, who is also a medical doctor. Voters could then decide what they thought was important. The information might also affect how voters view the choice of a vice president, especially if the candidate for the highest office had a serious illness or something else that might limit their term, he said.

Specifically, which records, though, and how to release them is a complicated issue. Caplan, at NYU, has long advocated setting up a special independent medical panel to evaluate presidential candidates’ health? and make their findings public. “It would be like an executive physical, which is what a lot of companies do before they pick a CEO,” he said. And deciding what to test for would be, in itself, complicated. Without a special panel ? which, even Caplan admits, would meet political inertia ? the challenges would be numerous. Even locating all the necessary records would be difficult. The candidates “may have moved

around the country, their doctors may have died, or records may not be available,” noted Lawrence Altman, who covered many presidential elections as a reporter for The New York Times and is now a global scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. While there is no specific requirement that candidates release any information at all, what readers? and voters? want to know varies widely. “It depends on their interest in the candidate,” Altman said. “A lot of people superimpose their political choices or feelings on the medical aspect. They are willing to dismiss something if they really like the candidate or make a big issue about it if they don’t like the candidate.”

TRI-COUNTY SENTRY, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2020

NEWS Tom Steyer's Climate Warriors lift Oxnard upward By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- The environment was on the front burner at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center, February 17, as Tom Steyer's Climate Warriors visited Oxnard and raised the bar about what the community can do about climate change and the environment.

S

TEYER is running for president and had the fervent support of attendees who shared their disdain about the current administration, and its plan to roll back laws regarding things like clean water pollution and other rollbacks. Seated on the panel were Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin, Fran Pavley, National Councilwoman Christen Hebrard from the California Young Democrats, and Steyer Senior Climate Advisor Vien Truong, who moderated the event. After the conference, Isabella Steyer, Tom's niece, said it was her first trip to Oxnard, after being in Los Angeles and attending her uncle's Santa Monica office opening. She provided the climate policy overview, which said that Tom would declare the climate crisis a national emergency on his first day in office. "We will reach net zero climate pollution by 2045 by ending our dependence on fossil fuels and eliminating toxic air pollution from all sectors," Steyer wrote. Oxnard Mayor Pro Tem and Ventura County District Five Supervisor Candidate Carmen Ramirez led off the event and said Oxnard faces a list of environmental problems. "Our city is one of the most polluted cities in California," she said. "Our community, South Oxnard, and the surrounding communities suffer from high rates

of asthma and a lack of all kinds of medical services, including mental health." National Councilwoman Christen Hebrard from the California Young Democrats said she doesn't like groups offering PAC money in the election at all. Ventura County is currently wrestling with that issue in this election cycle as the California Resources Corporation is funding ads designed to stop Ramirez from being elected. "Oil should not be funding public elections, let alone influencing the votes of public servants and influencing the vote of public servants," Hebrand said. "We've seen in communities consistently across California, anywhere from Oakland to Richmond; local elected who push a pro-fossil fuel agenda. I believe in transparency and letting the public know who is funding the measures." She said the community needs to be honest about what represents the people's interests. "I am always a proponent of environmentalists being elected as school teachers, scientists and doctors, and all the wonderful people who make up great solutions in our communities," she said. Steyer Senior Climate Advisor Vien Truong said Tom Steyer is working hard to break the stranglehold that corporate America has on politics at all levels. "He'll make sure that we invest in people at all levels and empower them to take the lead on what the community needs on the issues to advance that forward," she said. "It's why his plan is communityled and justice-centered. It makes sure that we are investing in people-power and supporting the work." This issue is not new for Steyer, and Truong said he's invested in community non-profits, so they have a voice in investing in community leaders, so they are empowered and supported through local elections. Steyer has been raising the voice

against undue fossil fuel influence, Truong said, since before he decided to run for president. He started investing in Oxnard in 2014. Truong said, and Steyer invested in local non-profits and supports local community members to challenge the fossil fuel projects that will continue polluting and poisoning children. "He's been part of the community, as Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez said earlier," Truong said. "He's willing to support the fight against the Puente Plant, and he supports Latino leaders in black, white, and brown communities across the board. Steyer did that in Oxnard in 2014, but he's also done that in California at the state level. He helped to invest in the fight against Texas oil when they came in 2010 and fought against Proposition 23." Proposition 23 would have suspended AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006. Prop 23 won, she said, and it helped people lift the voices of the non-profits. "A lot of these corporations have so much money that they are taking on these fights and defeating communities being poisoned on the front lines of these issues," she said. Steyer is investing in the counter fight, she said, and he invests in community members and empowers their voices. "He put his money on the line to help create a bank that helps invest in community wealth building," Truong said. "We have to accelerate investment in the good." Harry Reed is phone banking for Steyer, and he feels the issues are too important not to get involved. "Tom is the only candidate who makes climate change his number one issue," he said. "I have two grandkids, and it's most important to me that in the years to come, they're able to breathe the air, drink the water, and not have to worry about the contamination. That's why I'm here."

I was excited to see that. Tom is a modest guy, and he doesn't go around boasting about what he does and doesn't do. Every day I hear more and more about his impact prior to running for president He felt the conference was outstanding, and everyone was aware of what's going on. "There were initiatives I wasn't aware of," he said. "I was excited to see that. Tom is a modest guy, and he doesn't go around boasting about what he does and doesn't do. Every day I hear more and more about his impact prior to running for president." Daniel Oren thought the conference was a great event. "We had some nice turnout, and we are going to have some more events with even more turnout," he said. "We're going to have another event in the Coachella Valley, that's going to be another town hall event, on March 1. I also helped Tom in Iowa." Steven Wakimoto filled out postcards for Steyer. People who filled out 25 postcards got a tree planted in their name. "This is a national referendum and a matter of emergency," he said. "We're here for a specific reason. We need to get the Demagog, maniacal dictator out of the White House. At least this is a start. We're taking care of the environment. It's been neglected for so long, and it's a tall order. This is a comprehensive plan, and I agree with what Tom is doing right now, along with jobs, immigration, and other issues. I'm delighted to help him out." For more information, visit tomsteyer.com.

Jeffrey Wheelock arrested by Ventura Police Ventura-- On Feb. 25, 2020, at 3 p.m., the Ventura Police Department Command Center received a 911 call of a subject armed and brandishing a handgun near the intersection of Thompson Blvd. and Garden St. Officers arrived and contacted the victim, who reported last seeing the subject climbing a fence and going underneath the Highway 101 overpass at Garden St. The subject, Jeffrey Wheelock, is known by officers to frequent the area and located him hiding in a crawl space under the overpass. Officers gave Wheelock several commands to come out, but he refused and would not show them his hands. With reports that Wheelock was possibly armed with a handgun, a Ventura Police K-9,

Miles, was deployed. Wheelock began hitting the K-9 in the head and was able to wedge himself into the crawl space further. Officers trained in crisis negotiations responded and negotiated with Wheelock for approximately 30

minutes but were unsuccessful. Officers also deployed water using a fire hose in an attempt to flush Wheelock out, but he still did not come out. The K-9 was deployed a second time, at which time several officers approached the crawl space

and were able to physically take Wheelock into custody. During a search of his property, two replica firearms were located. Wheelock was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries as a result of the dog bite and later booked for the brandishing of a replica firearm, battery on a police dog, resisting arrest, and trespassing. No officers were injured as a result of this incident. The K-9 did not sustain any injuries as a result of the altercation with Wheelock. A review of the Ventura County Superior Court website shows Wheelock has prior convictions for felony resisting arrest, burglary, battery, petty theft, trespassing, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

color and drove around Los Angeles, taking pictures of cars for many years before she thought of it as an art form. "I'm an L.A. girl," she said. "I started as a painter, and after college, I went to New York and got involved with advertising as an art director. I met lots of fabulous art directors that I worked with." Nine-month-old Sage and Mom Tahanee Tully loved the show, and Tahnee said that Sage would drive a classic car one day. "Her dad works on classic cars," Tahnee said. "We have an old International at home." Tahnee said she calls the shots at home when it comes to her ride. "I tell him what I like, and he makes it happen," she said. "It's cars, family, and fun." Lori Steinhauer said you can't beat the grand reopening at the Murphy Auto Museum. "I've always been into the moment," she said. "We just found out what a calliope is, so it's a big night." Marg Skupien loves the open house. "We get to see what the facility is like and have the information to read about," she said. "The styles are fascinating." Stephenson addressed the push polls and wants to know what the oil industry is afraid of. "They have seen Carmen and me run a grassroots, people-powered volunteer-driven campaign for a year," Stephenson said. "They've seen the power of that, and they've seen that we are winning. Otherwise, they would not need to put $825,000 into a PAC to defeat us. We're the two people they've identified, and I want to say right now; never underestimate the power of the people. It may take us longer to get there, but in the end, we stay." Ramirez told the crowd that she signed the no fossil fuel pledge and invited the crowd also to sign the document. Stephenson also signed the pledge. "I pledge not to take contributions

over whatever from the oil, gas, and coal industry," Ramirez read. She addressed the oil industry employees and said those people do not get the profits. "You're making a living, and for some of you, it's good," she said. "It is, as Kim Stephenson said the other night in Santa Paula, the industry is withering, it's going away, and it's actually based on dinosaur leavings. We have to be modern, and we have to get with it." Ramirez said the fires in Australia are a red alert for the people in California. "California has been a leader thanks to Senator Jackson," Ramirez said to the cheering crowd. She doesn't want to turn her back on those people working in the oil

and gas field, and Ramirez intends to help those people transition and give them a safety net. In comments after the press conference, Simi Valley Councilwoman Ruth Luvenos said she has been pro-environmental since she was in law school. "We tried to protect the wetlands in Manhattan Beach," she said. "My husband and I have been doing this and have been advocates in the community for over 20 years. "We're going to transition people, not abandon them and give them clean energy jobs through the Clean Power Alliance. Carmen has been a huge supporter of me when I was targeted as the first woman of color on the city council." Ventura County Democrat Chair Tiffany Lewis said the press

conference shows how much support they have for their candidates. "There are people from Ojai who are here, Oxnard, Ventura, people from Simi Valley, Camarillo, and every city in our county was represented here," she said. When you see an attack ad on television, she said it's understandable for people to be alarmed. "I invite people to do research and look into these ads," she said. "They're negatively targeting these candidates for a reason. I invite people to do their research and find out who's paying for these ads and why are they paying for these ads." She echoed Luvenos and said the ads make her want to walk the walk and educate the people about the truth behind Ramirez and Stephenson.

"Every single day, I walk the walk," she said. "I'm making calls, making texts, writing postcards, and talking to people in the community. I'm going to be text banking and canvassing today and tomorrow. We've only got 10 days, and we need everyone's feet on the street." Gabe Tehran said it's great to hear directly from the candidates. "All of this negative campaign has been coming out, which has apparently been coming from the oil industry, he said. "I always want to hear both sides of it, and I am glad to hear their take on it. I haven't heard anything from CRC like this is our take, and this is why we're doing it. There are some twisted ads coming out. I'm glad to get some clarity from the candidates themselves."

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil

Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 855 238-5118 for information regarding the trustee's sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www. qualityloan.com, using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the Trustee: CA-19-872727-AB. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designation is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the sale is set aside for any reason, including if the Trustee is unable to convey title, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the monies paid to the Trustee. This shall be the Purchaser's sole and exclusive remedy. The purchaser shall have no further recourse against the Trustor, the Trustee, the Beneficiary, the Beneficiary's Agent, or the Beneficiary's Attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to exercise the note holders right's against the real property only. TRI-COUNTY SENTRY, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2020

FEATURES Netflix series explores the assassination of Malcolm X By Russell Contreras ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP)—A new Netflix series is tackling questions around the 1965 assassination of civil rights icon Malcolm X.

The die is set and Malcolm shall not escape. ... Such a man is worthy of death.

WHO Killed Malcolm X?” dives into questions surrounding his accused killers and allegations of a botched investigation. The show available now on the streaming service comes as Friday marked the 55th anniversary of Malcolm X's death. The series follows activistscholar Abdur-Rahman Muhammad, who revisits the assassination through interviews and archives. Muhammad argues in the series that at least two of the men charged with the slaying were innocent and that the real killers got away. Three men—Muhammad Aziz, Mujahid Abdul Halim and Khalil Islam—were convicted of killing the civil rights leader and sentenced to life in prison. Aziz and Islam had long denied they were connected to any plot to kill Malcolm X, and Halim had said the two were not involved. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance's office announced earlier this month after the release of the series

Louis Farrakhan

that it will revisit the 1965 assassination. “(Vance) has determined that the district attorney's office will begin a preliminary review of the matter, which will inform the office regarding what further investigative steps may be undertaken,” district attorney spokesman Danny Frost said in a statement. The assassination of Malcolm X has long interested

scholars and activists, who point to the feud he had with Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad after publicly breaking with the group. A daughter of Malcolm X was charged in 1995 with trying to hire a hit man to kill Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Malcolm X's widow, Betty Shabazz, said in a 1994 television interview that she believed Farrakhan

Vietnam is using music videos on social media to reach the public. In Malaysia, loudspeakers on trucks blare information through the streets. In Europe, portable pods set up at United Kingdom hospitals will be used to assess people suspected of infection while keeping them apart from others. France developed a quick test for the virus and has shared it with poorer nations. German authorities are stressing “sneezing etiquette” and Russia is screening people at airports, railway stations and those riding public transportation. In the U.S., hospitals and emergency workers for years have practiced for a possible deadly, fast-spreading flu. Those drills helped the first hospitals to treat U.S. patients suffering from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. Other hospitals are paying attention. The CDC has been talking to the American Hospital Association, which in turn communicates coronavirus news daily to its nearly 5,000 member hospitals. Hospitals are reviewing infection control measures, considering using telemedicine to keep potentially infectious patients from making unnecessary trips to the hospital and conserving dwindling supplies of masks and gloves. What's more, the CDC has held 17 different calls reaching more than 11,000 companies and organizations, including stadiums, universities, faith leaders, retailers and large corporations. U.S. health authorities are talking to city, county and state health departments about being ready to cancel mass gathering events, close schools and take other steps. The CDC's Messonnier said

Tuesday she had contacted her children's school district to ask about plans for using internetbased education should schools need to close temporarily, as some did in 2009 during an outbreak of H1N1 flu. She encouraged American parents to do the same, and to ask their employers whether they'll be able to work from home. “We want to make sure the American public is prepared,” Messonnier said. How prepared are U.S. hospitals? “It depends on caseload and location. I would suspect most hospitals are prepared to handle one to two cases, but if there is ongoing local transmission with many cases, most are likely not prepared just yet for a surge of patients and the ‘worried well,'“ Dr. Jennifer Lighter, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist at NYU Langone in New York, said in an email. In the U.S., a vaccine candidate is inching closer to first-step safety studies in people, as Moderna Inc. has delivered test doses to Fauci's NIH institute. Some other companies say they have candidates that could begin testing in a few months. Still, even if those first safety studies show no red flags, specialists believe it would take at least a year to have something ready for widespread use. That's longer than it took in 2009, during the H1N1 flu pandemic—because that time around, scientists only had to adjust regular flu vaccines, not start from scratch. The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the U.N. health agency's team in China found the fatality rate between 2% and 4% in the hard-hit city of Wuhan, the virus' epicenter, and 0.7% elsewhere.

was involved in her husband's assassination. Farrakhan, who was recruited into the Nation of Islam by Malcolm X, wrote in the Dec. 4, 1964, issue of Muhammad Speaks, the organization's newspaper: “The die is set and Malcolm shall not escape. ... Such a man is worthy of death.” Farrakhan was chief minister of the Nation of Islam's Boston mosque at the time the civil rights leader was killed. Farrakhan acknowledged in a 2000 interview with CBS' 60 Minutes that his incendiary rhetoric played a role in the assassination. The Omaha, Nebraskaborn Malcolm X, who had changed his name to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, was killed in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom by gunmen who opened fire during a speaking engagement. He was buried at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.

Songwriter and 'Good Times' actress Ja'Net DuBois dies LOS ANGELES (AP)—Ja'Net DuBois, who played the vivacious neighbor Willona Woods on “Good Times” and composed and sang the theme song for “The Jeffersons,” has died. DuBois' song “Movin' on Up” provided a joyous intro to “The Jeffersons” during the show's 10-season run. BernNadette Stanis, who played Thelma Evans Anderson on “Good Times,” said she learned of DuBois' death Tuesday from the actress' daughter. Police in Glendale, California, said they received a report about DuBois' death late Monday. She appeared to have died of natural causes and no investigation is ongoing, police Sgt. Dan Stubbs said. No additional details, including her age, were immediately available. Stanis said DuBois appeared to be in good health and they had appeared two weeks ago at a signing event. She noted that DuBois kept to herself and no one knew exactly how old she was. DuBois had a prolific career beyond the 1970s hit “Good Times,” winning two Emmy Awards for her voice work on the WB series “The PJs.” DuBois' Willona was the single, sexy neighbor and best friend to star Esther Rolle's Florida Evans. Though the comedy had plenty of one-liners, DuBois' appearances gave an extra dose of comedic relief. DuBois showed off more of her dramatic skills when a young Janet Jackson joined the show as the abused child Penny; DuBois' character would go on to adopt Penny, and the story line also forged a long, close relationship with Jackson, who would go on to become a multiplatinum superstar; she cast DuBois as her mother in her 1986 “Control” video. DuBois' career started in theater, where she appeared in Broadway productions of “Golden Boy” and “A Raisin in the Sun,” according to a biography on her website. A performance in “The Hot l Baltimore” in Los Angeles caught the eye of Norman Lear, who developed “Good Times” and “The Jeffersons.”

New virus continued from page 8

quite successful because the travel-related cases, we've been able to identify, to isolate” and to track down those they came in contact with. With no vaccine or medicine available yet, preparations are focused on what's called “social distancing”—limiting opportunities for people to gather and spread the virus. That played out in Italy this week. With cases climbing, authorities cut short the popular Venice Carnival and closed down Milan's La Scala opera house. In Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on companies to allow employees to work from home, while the Tokyo Marathon and other public events scheduled in the coming weeks have been canceled. Is the rest of the world ready? In Africa, three-quarters of countries have a flu pandemic plan, but most are outdated, according to authors of a modeling study published last week in The Lancet medical journal. The slightly better news is that the African nations most connected to China by air travel—Egypt, Algeria and South Africa—also have the most prepared health systems on the continent. Elsewhere, Thailand said it would establish special clinics to examine people with flu-like symptoms to detect infections early. Sri Lanka and Laos imposed price ceilings for face masks, while India restricted the export of personal protective equipment. India's health ministry has been framing step-bystep instructions to deal with sustained transmissions that will be circulated to the 250,000 village councils that are the most basic unit of the country's sprawling administration.
