T

HE event was a celebration of music, art, dance, in addition to foods from far away places, and

fashions for sale that was unique and distinctive. NEMA (Neighbors Embracing Multicultural Arts) President Jan Straka organized the event and said the group is a 501c3 holder and received a Legacy Grant for the celebration. “NEMA has been in existence since 1995, and we got started because we love art and music,” she said. “I worked over at Moorpark and Oxnard College for 10 years, and it started as a club, and we evolved into a nonprofit.” The group began as a dance team, and Straka started multicultural days at both colleges. n Music Fest, see page 6

Crimes of the Heart delivers pure entertainment By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— An afternoon of fun at the Elite Theater Company meant lots of drama, comedy, crime, and lies, all wrapped up in one happily dysfunctional family, made the troupe’s production of Crimes of the Heart fun for theater enthusiasts, April 28. The Elite Theater Company

is part of the Four Star Theater Alliance and promotes a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect that celebrates the work of the Camarillo Skyway Playhouse, the Conejo Players Theater, the Ojai Art Center Theater, the Santa Paula Theater Center and the Elite Theater Company as they join forces and bring great performances to Ventura County. Crimes of the Heart, written

by Beth Henley, follows the adventures of Babe Botrelle plus Meg and Lenny Magrath, who reunite at their old granddaddy’s home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi after he is taken ill and suffers a stroke in the play. The sisters did not grow up as one big happy family and had plenty of drama between them after Babe shoots her abusive husband because “she didn’t like

how he looks.” Director Jolyn Johnson said the cast did a lot of character research and development for the play. “We’ve developed the historical events that went on during Crimes of the Heart, researched that, and we had lots of theater activities that I had them do in terms of how you are n Crimes, see page 2
