T
HE event was a celebration of music, art, dance, in addition to foods from far away places, and
fashions for sale that was unique and distinctive. NEMA (Neighbors Embracing Multicultural Arts) President Jan Straka organized the event and said the group is a 501c3 holder and received a Legacy Grant for the celebration. “NEMA has been in existence since 1995, and we got started because we love art and music,” she said. “I worked over at Moorpark and Oxnard College for 10 years, and it started as a club, and we evolved into a nonprofit.” The group began as a dance team, and Straka started multicultural days at both colleges. n Music Fest, see page 6

Crimes of the Heart delivers pure entertainment By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— An afternoon of fun at the Elite Theater Company meant lots of drama, comedy, crime, and lies, all wrapped up in one happily dysfunctional family, made the troupe’s production of Crimes of the Heart fun for theater enthusiasts, April 28. The Elite Theater Company
is part of the Four Star Theater Alliance and promotes a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect that celebrates the work of the Camarillo Skyway Playhouse, the Conejo Players Theater, the Ojai Art Center Theater, the Santa Paula Theater Center and the Elite Theater Company as they join forces and bring great performances to Ventura County. Crimes of the Heart, written
by Beth Henley, follows the adventures of Babe Botrelle plus Meg and Lenny Magrath, who reunite at their old granddaddy’s home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi after he is taken ill and suffers a stroke in the play. The sisters did not grow up as one big happy family and had plenty of drama between them after Babe shoots her abusive husband because “she didn’t like
how he looks.” Director Jolyn Johnson said the cast did a lot of character research and development for the play. “We’ve developed the historical events that went on during Crimes of the Heart, researched that, and we had lots of theater activities that I had them do in terms of how you are n Crimes, see page 2

sitting, standing and moving,” she said. “Writing (about your role) is a good way to get into your character.” When it comes to stage movement, called blocking, she is a big fan of how you feel in the moment. “We did a lot of work in terms of walking, instead of being moved at this point at this moment because I told you to,” she said. “Instead, I would give everybody a rough idea about where I wanted them to end up, and the actors would fill in through all the rehearsals. I would let them know what was and wasn’t working.” The production was full of seasoned professionals, she said, and have worked on stage for about 15 years, at least. “They don’t do it for pay; they do it because they love it,” she said. “The only challenge in this theater was that it wasn’t built to be a theater, so we needed to practice our projection more because it’s not built like a normal theater.” Johnson said if the theater is your passion, go for it and don’t let anyone stop you. “My 13-year-old son loves acting, directing and writing and every aspect of it,” she said. “I am there in support of him because that is what we should do, and the arts are important.” The theater speaks at many different levels, she said, and you can talk about society, culture and family dynamics. “They’ve proven that when you remove theater from school, the students don’t do as well,” she said. “I love that we have a good, thriving theater community in Ventura County.” She loves directing shows with interesting and flawed characters and said few productions have more than one female character. “I knew about Crimes of the Heart, and I pitched it to L.J. Stevens, the artistic director a year ago, and said a woman writes it, it’s got some
fantastic female characters, and I would like to direct it,” Johnson said. To the people with a passion, she said don’t stifle what’s in your heart. “It would be a shame because it’s the passion that drives you,” she said. “To settle would be a disservice.” Board President and Managing Producer Stephanie Rice wears many hats and served as stage manager for the production. "Usually, stage managers take down blocking, and when the actors ask what did we do and where did we go, you tell them they did this," she said. "We watch lines and give them cues." She loves every aspect of theater. "I just finished up a show in Camarillo and have been in theater for a lot of years," she said. "I fell in love with this place in 2015 when my brother was cast in a show, and their stage manager had to leave, and I stepped up and filled in Stevens said, as the artistic director, she plans the season and has known Johnson for many years. “I’ve been involved with the Ventura County theater scene since 1997 and came aboard at the Elite a year ago,” she said. “I had to plan the new season, and I had several trusted people pitch new shows and Crimes of the Heart was one that Jolyn mentioned, and I was familiar with. The pitch of this show started the wheels spinning about what I can make of a season for next year.” Stevens is at every show, and she takes great care to speak with the audience. “Last year, I made sure to speak with the patrons, especially the season ticket holders, to find out what they enjoyed about past seasons, what they didn’t enjoy and the direction they wanted the theater to go in the future.” After reading Crimes of the Heart, she decided the shows this season will be centered around a season of family.
Stevens grew up in the movie theater business, and got her start in Babylon New York that led her to St. John’s University. “I knew that theater was for me since I was seven,” she said. “I participated in the shows in the park in North Babylon, and I was a shy child, so my mother got me involved in the theater to get me out of that shell.” She is a trained singer and graced many stages across Ventura County. “Producing is my niche,” she said. “I love putting the pieces together and letting people be creative,” she said. Stevens thanked the crowd for supporting the arts before the show began. “We are Ventura County’s intimate theater, she said. “We have 70 seats here, and we have 45 seats on our south stage,” she said. “I ask that you follow along on our Facebook and Instagram pages. We have a new young lady who speaks to the youth of Oxnard and she is running our Instagram with fun chats and pictures.” She spoke about a Hispanic theater group that didn’t get a grant and was in danger of closing its doors. “Rather than see them close their doors, we opened our doors to them, and they’re doing two shows this year on our main stage,” she said. “We thought it was important that they continue their bi-cultural message here.” As a small community theater, she said ticket sales alone do not mean all is well. “If you find that you can live without that one Starbucks coffee a month, you can arrange to donate that $5 to the theater company here, and that would help us pay for the hand towels in the bathroom,” she said. “That one little expense off our plate helps us put it towards our production and towards the type of community theater you want to see.” Stage Technician Genesis Perez
said Crimes of the Heart is a great production. “All the characters have a depth to them, and all the actors play each character with a bit of nuance,” she said. “There is humor in some scenes, and there is some heavy subject matter in others. They balance it all out and make the characters seem well-rounded and human.” Gai Jones from Ojai had a great time at the show. “I am one of the Four Star Judges, so this year I get to see all the plays at the Elite,” she said. “I’ve worked with this play before because I taught forever in high school and college.” She said the dialogue is dense and every word has multiple meanings. “I like the play, and what she’s done with it,” she said. “The callbacks and the cast are complex, and she got a strong cast together.” After the show, the cast met the audience and Dawn Michelle, who played Meg Magrath, said the two are similar. "She tells it like it is and doesn’t sugarcoat anything,” she said. “If she wants you to know her feelings, she’ll say it. Meg and I also have something in common, because the play states that she’s the one who found her mother and I went through something of the same with my father.” She grew up with stepsisters and a sister and said at the end when Lenny says I hate it when we fight so much it reminds her of when she and her sisters don’t get along well. Samantha Netzen Bingham played Becky “Babe” Botrelle said she read for every part and they were all a lot of fun. “I remember driving home thinking Babe has so many drastic highs and lows that I thought she would be fun to explore and see what makes her tick,” she said. “Babe is the one I was most interested in.” The play had a big fight scene, and she said the blocking on stage was no
problem at all. “It is such a joy working with everyone here, and they brought their "A" game to every rehearsal,”: she said. “When we had to do more intricate fight scenes or scenes where we're talking over each other we were all completely in it.” Genevieve Levin played Lenny Magrath said she found parts of herself that related to all the characters. “Lenny is a character I might have been if I hadn’t found acting and other things in my life that I wanted badly enough to go for them,” she said. “The main thing she struggled with is that she was never allowed to want things.“ She is the oldest of three girls and said she had some significant issues occur in her teens that she related on stage. “My parents split up when I was 14, and we lost my dad when I was 17,” she said. “I went through a lot of putting aside what I want and being there for my parents and listening to my sisters and related that to what Lenny must have gone through when they lost their mother.” Lenny revealed that she could not have children and said body shaming played a lot into her character. “There is a problem that still exists out there that woman who can’t have children are stigmatized, and you are not a woman if you can’t have children,” she said. "That’s something we are moving past slowly, but it’s still out there.” After a show, Levin said she doesn’t have a ritual. “I like hanging out with the audience and realizing that it was a performance, and while it had an impact on us, we also had an impact on them, and it’s a shared experience,” she said. “That helps it settle in.” Crimes of the Heart runs through May 12. NEWS Associated Student Government Luncheon applauds VCCCD leaders By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Ventura County Community College District (VCCCD) held a big celebration, April 26, as Oxnard College hosted its Associated Student Leadership Luncheon to pay tribute to students who stepped up, met the challenge and made each campus a better place to take the next step in their lives. The Associated Students from Oxnard, Moorpark and Ventura College enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by the Oxnard College Culinary Arts School, and each group shared success stories from the year and received awards from the trustees for a job well done. Chancellor Dr. Greg Gillespie opened the luncheon and thanked the group for being student leaders and serving in student government but took a moment to relate a fun story. “My wife and I have tickets to see Avengers End Game tonight, and I understand that some of you have already gone,” he said to the enthusiastic students. The students told him the movie made them cry and laugh. “What is one word you would use if I asked you to describe what serving in government would be,” he asked the students. Words the students used to describe the experience were influential, growth, and a privilege. “That’s an interesting one too, because when you are elected to serve in an office it is a privilege to do that,” Gillespie said. “It’s really not about you as an individual, it’s about you understanding what the needs of the people are you represent and serve and express that. That’s really where student government helps

us out as a district is we’re here to serve you and all the other students you represent. The student voice is critical to us in our governance and our decision making.” Moving forward, he said what the college does is continue to improve and serve the students throughout the district. “One word that I hope applies to all of you about how you feel, with regards to the service is that you feel proud about what you’ve done,” he said. “It does take time and it is a commitment and I value the efforts you put in over the school year.” Trustee Josh Chancer recently got elected and that made him reflect on his own college experience. “I didn’t step up for a leadership role to improve the lives of my fellow students,” he said. “My hats off to you for doing that and when we met as a district six months ago what I told you is we don’t function without students and we need student leaders to make the lives of our fellow students better.” Oxnard College Student Activities Specialist Gabriela Rodriguez said the celebration is a milestone for everyone.
“This is the first time we worked so closely together and witness your journey from when we first met on Aug. 24, 2018 and we had the first of this series,” she said “We had the middle in Jan. and this is the end of this, but the beginning of so much more.” She, along with her colleagues Kristin Robinson and Libby Fatta, are impressed by how much the group grew during the school year. “I’ve seen a student at Oxnard walk though my office not able to breathe and then witness them on stage speaking to an audience,” she said. “That’s exciting to me.” Robinson said some of the issues facing the district is bigger than some of the individual campuses. “We are able to come together and share ideas and ways to address those issues successfully,” she said. “It’s been imperative to a lot of your success throughout the year and thank you for being willing to engage and learn from one another and take some of the things you see that are successful at each one of the campuses and figure out ways that you are able to serve your students on your home campus and use each
other as a resource.” Fatta said the year has been impactful for the student government as well as the students they served along the way. “Continue down this leadership journey and continue to grow, serve and support others who need your leadership,” she said. Andrew Lopez, president of the Moorpark College Associated Students said it’s been a big year starting in July 2018 when they got tips from the audience about how to run a meeting. “We had the entire newly elected board com to our meeting last Wednesday and being able to show what we’ve learned is an awesome treat,” he said. “This year, we’ve increased our scholarship fund, we doubled that, and we gave twice as many to students and we increased the amount of money we put into our budget for years to come.” The group also collaborated with administration and staff to give an emergency fund grant to help the students with any emergency finances. “They can use this grant and get money right away so they can get
an education,” she said. “That was in part due to the colleges program after the Borderline and fire situation.” Adan Navarez associated student president for Oxnard College said he is both honored and surprised to be speaking. “We started with our retreat and it was a lot of fun,” he said. “We got to speak with a lot of club members, so we not only had our club members there, but we had an extra 20 people and that was a space to interconnect with them.” “One of our first events was National Coming Out Day and the Halloween Dance,” he said. “National Coming Out Day was awesome, and it was for everyone who identifies as LGBQ to come out. It was an awesome environment and day. We had our Halloween Dance in our café, and we had good attendance for that.” He formed a trip with the help of other associated student government board members and visited Santa Cruz. “We saw San Jose State and the University of California Davis,” he said. “It was a three-day, two-night trip and 51 students got to visit these universities. It was life changing for me.” Navarez said the group also arranged 20 scholarships for $500. “They’re going to be coming out soon,” he said. Ventura College Associated Student President Vanessa Luis said the year was tough because there were only three people. “We got some awesome board members on our board and we did a good job this year and I couldn’t do anything without them,” she said. “We had a lot of events on east campus and acknowledging that we have an east campus is important.” The group also did autism acceptance and a women empowerment event. “We also met with Monique Limon in the in the fall semester and we had Constitution Day too,” she said. “Our retreat was so awesome.”
Oxnard seniors enjoy nutritious food and fellowship By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard--- Good food and great friends were the themes at the Wilson Senior Center, April 30, as the group wrapped up a busy morning with a nutritious lunch and fueled up for a busy afternoon. The meal is prepared daily by a staff of caring professionals, assisted by volunteers who deliver the food and clean up once the meal is done. Chef Joan Johnson and Joyce Gonzales served beef with portabella mushrooms, green beans, and corn, plus bread. “Daily they get milk, a fruit of choice and a salad,” Johnson said. “I get here at 8 a.m. and have it ready by 11:30 every day.” She loves seeing the seniors get a hot meal every day. “Then I get to interact, go outside of the kitchen, play a little pool and talk with the seniors,” she said. “This is the best and most rewarding shift job I have ever had.” The center has a couple of vegetarians, she said, so for them, she made a vegetable lasagna. “Sometimes somebody wants a salad or something off the menu, but my main purpose is serving the seniors so what they want, they get,” she said. She got the food service background from home, and it started at a young age.
she said. “We have a lot of activities here, Zumba, Tai Chi, dominoes and it’s a lot of fun here.” Emily Rivera was wrapping up another great week full of fun at the Wilson Senior Center. “We love to play bingo, my favorite thing, and Fernando (Garcia) is my nephew,” she said. “Everyone is friendly, and the food is great. Lasagna is my favorite.”
Adrian Senegal said he’s not a meat eater, so he was hanging with friends. “I’m going to shoot a little pool, hang out and harass my friends,” he said. “I like to interact with people in my age group. I watch my grandkids on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so my interaction is with kids most of the time.” The Wilson Senior Center is located at 350 North C Street.

Chef Joan Johnson and Joyce Gonzales are proud to serve Oxnard’s seniors the Wilson Senior Center.
“I learned a lot and kept on doing it,” she said. “I’ll go out on my 10-minute break, have lunch and interact with them. The dietician comes two times a year and makes sure we do what we are supposed to do.” Wilson Center Director Fernando Garcia said the seniors enjoy congregating and he invites them to come out and enjoy all the fun. “Come out and have lunch with us,” he said. “It goes from 11:30 until usually 12 p.m. and it’s a $3 donation for people age 60 and over and if you are under 60 there are different requirements, and we’ll talk about that when you get here.” People who hesitate to
come should stop by for lunch, he said, and you’ll probably recognize someone you haven’t seen for a while. “If not, people start talking, and they say why don’t you come on Friday for the art group or come on Tuesday for bingo or Wednesday for line dancing,” he said. “Even if you don’t want to do an activity, some people hang around after lunch and pass the time by playing dominoes or talking with a cup of coffee.” If that isn’t your thing, he said there are plenty of volunteer opportunities available. “Maybe you want to come in once a week and help us
mark people in for lunch or greeting people at the door,” he said. Ruth Galbraith was enjoying her lunch and enjoying plenty of good company at her table. “It’s wonderful, and there is no other place in town like it,” she said. “After we eat, we get to play dominoes with certain people or get on the floor and dance to the music.” Josie Solis is a volunteer at the center for the last 13 years, and she was enjoying her favorite meal, vegetable lasagna with a salad and a carton of milk. “I make the coffee, I welcome new people and clean tables with other people,”

OPED
Lazy does have its advantages Dr. James L. Snyder As a young boy, my father tried drilling into my brain that laziness was not acceptable in his house. If I wanted to be lazy, I had to go outside. He provided a wonderful role model for me because if my father was anything, he was not lazy. He tried to encourage me not to be lazy. Laziness, according to him, was an attack on common decency and energy. After all these years, I have tried to live up to his standard. And yet, I must confess that I have found that laziness may have an advantage or two. I’m leaning towards the two. It was my fortune to marry a young lady who did not have an inkling of laziness in any of her bones. I thought when I first married her; she was trying to impress me with how active she was and how much she could get done. I have discovered, however, that that certainly was not the case. Laziness and she have never met as far as I understand it. I have tried not to be lazy and to a certain extent, I have succeeded. However, as I get older I begin to appreciate the opportunity of laziness. It does not have the bad connotation I was taught down through the years. Everything has its good side and its bad side. The great joy of life is trying
to find the good side in everything. This includes laziness. Anybody can point out the bad side to laziness, but it takes a genius to discover the good side of laziness. I am not pretending to be that genius, but I can say that I have discovered a good side to laziness. The good side of laziness occurred to me recently. My wife loves to put together “Honey-DoLists” for her husband. That would be me, of course. Let me say that just because it’s called a “Honey-Do-Lists” does not mean that there is any sweetness to it. In fact, from my own personal experience I have yet to find any sweetness in that activity. I call it an activity because I am supposed to actively do everything on that list. It was a Monday morning and as usual, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage handed to me her weekly “Honey-Do-List." As usual, the list was quite long and in great detail. “Make sure,” she said rather seriously, “that you do everything on that list as soon as possible.” One of the things I have often wanted to ask my wife is what is her meaning of “as soon as possible”? It seems that I have not the faintest idea of what it really means. As a well-seasoned husband, I smile most graciously as she hands me that list and say, “Yes, dear.” Her list comes as close to a novel as anything
she does. It takes several days for me to read that list and try to understand what I am supposed to do with it. But, with my experience, I do
If you look as far back as the beginning of the republic, sitting presidents who have stood for re-election in the general election have won about 70 percent of the time. the best I can and there have been several times, not many, that I have finished her list to the last point. It was about Thursday when I was going over the list and saw several things that had not been checked off. I sighed very deeply, and with determination planned to get back in the saddle again. I find it very hard to juggle what I want to do with her “Honey-Do-List.” It is always a struggle because I know I have to do her list, but in my mind, I really want to do my list.
I was drinking some coffee and looking over this list to see what my next assignment was. At that time, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage came into the room and said, “Did you do the 12th item on my list?” At the time, I was a little startled because I did not know what she was getting at. I did not know if this was a quiz or if I was being evaluated by my work. I was a little concerned because there were some little nuggets of lazy that had peppered my week up to this point. Looking at her I said, “No, I haven’t got to number 12 yet. I’m still working on number 10.” She sighed such a deep sigh of relief that it frightened me a little. I was afraid if I said I had not accomplished number 12 I would be in serious trouble. After all, it was on the list and I was supposed to do everything on the list. “I’m so glad you didn’t do that. It was my mistake and I would’ve been in serious trouble
had you done it.” As it turned out it was her doctor’s appointment, which was scheduled for next month. She got the date wrong. I do not think I could have fooled her doctor into thinking I was her. If it was not for my laziness at the time, I am not sure who would have been in more trouble, her or me. I was reminded of a verse my father liked to quote. “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich” (Proverbs 10:4). I wish my father was here because then I would tell him that sometimes the situation needs “a slack hand.” Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, and lives with the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage in Ocala, FL. Call him at 352-687-4240 or e-mail jamessnyder2@att.net. Out of sight, out of mind By Marian Wright Edelman Baby dolls, tiny trucks, toy food and dress-up capes. Scattered about the ballroom of a motel in Northeast Washington, D.C., and captured in a Washington Post column by Petula Dvorak, these hallmarks of child’s play are not merely a sign of productive imaginations—they’re evidence of a larger child and family poverty crisis that must end in our affluent nation. Twenty minutes outside the city’s downtown, a stretch of budget motels along a major highway serve as overflow shelters for homeless families in the nation’s capital. They have strict rules about where children are seen and heard. Signs dotting the hallways announce “No Playing on the Hotel Premises” and children are forbidden from gathering in
common spaces. The Homeless Children’s Playtime Project, a local nonprofit, reserves event spaces to carve out areas where children can be children. However, the lack of space and high cost of reserving ballrooms and conference halls means pop-up playtimes are much too limited. Away from the hustle and bustle of Capitol Hill where big deals are made and bills become laws, the motels—and the 1,000 homeless children within them—are largely out of sight and out of mind. Other shelters are similarly isolated. Until it closed in October 2018, the city’s largest family shelter was D.C. General, a former abandoned public hospital whose neighboring buildings included a jail and a morgue. Out of direct view and tucked into the nooks and crannies of a dense, bustling city, it is too easy
to overlook out-of-sight homeless children. Until tragedy strikes. Eight-year-old Relisha Rudd was abducted from the D.C. General homeless shelter in March 2014.
Why do we fail to see our poor children until their faces stare at us from a Missing Child poster? Relisha loved art and baby dolls and would exuberantly spell V-I-C-TO-R-Y on her school’s cheer team. For months, Relisha’s disappearance dominated the news cycle and brought
the glare of national attention to D.C. General. City officials, pundits, locals and anonymous online commenters heaped blame on Relisha’s family, her teachers and her social workers. But assigning blame did nothing to bring Relisha home. Five years have passed and Relisha is still missing. Why do we fail to see our poor children until their faces stare at us from a Missing Child poster? Why do we blame parents rather than blame our broken, unjust system that fails to provide affordable housing for families? Thousands of Relishas live everywhere among us, without safe places to live and grow up. They are homeless because housing is too expensive and their parents’ jobs pay too little; unaccounted for because affordable quality child care is out of reach; finding pockets of playtime in motel ballrooms because
play is otherwise forbidden; hurting because poverty hurts. It’s time to stop assigning blame and start taking action. Next week the Children’s Defense Fund will release a new edition of our report Ending Child Poverty Now with an urgent call to action. We must make poor children’s struggles visible to our political leaders and policymakers at all levels of government and in every state and community. We must lift up child poverty solutions that work including a higher minimum wage, housing assistance vouchers for struggling parents, transitional jobs programs and child care assistance. We must keep children front and center, invisible no longer. Marian Wright Edelman is President Emeritus of the Children's Defense Fund.
How well Biden (or any Democrat) might do against Trump won’t be determined by polls By Robert Romano Pollsters love to do general election matchup polls early in the process to figure out which candidates would fare the best against a sitting incumbent president like Donald Trump. The idea is to give primary voters of one party or another an idea of which candidate is the most “electable.” For example, in April 2011, Democracy Corps published a poll that showed Mitt Romney could defeat then-President Barack Obama, 48 percent to 46 percent. In Oct. 2011, another CNN-Opinion Research poll showed Romney leading 50 percent to 45 percent. But we all know how it turned out. Even after showdowns with House Republicans over the debt ceiling in 2011—which resulted in budget sequestration that helped reduce the deficit—Obama went on to comfortably win re-election in 2012. So, how much stock should we put in the Politico-Morning Consult poll that shows former Vice President Joe Biden at 42 percent versus President Donald Trump at 36 percent? Almost none. The question, particularly for first term presidents, is whether voters think it is time for a change, or if they are willing to be patient while the incumbent party finishes what it started. In modern history, since 1952, that has yielded a fairly high re-election rate for incumbent parties in their first terms. Dwight
Eisenhower was re-elected in 1956, Lyndon Johnson won John Kennedy’s second term in 1964, Richard Nixon was re-elected in 1972, Jimmy Carter was ousted in 1980, Ronald Reagan was reelected in 1984, Bill Clinton was re-elected in 1996, George W. Bush was re-elected in 2004 and Barack Obama was re-elected in 2012. All told, in modern history, in 87.5 percent of the cases where the incumbent party had served one term it tended to be re-elected. Readers will note that George H.W. Bush is not included in that listing. The reason for that is he won Reagan’s third term—that is, the third consecutive term that Republicans had held the White
House. So, his being ousted in 1992 was less surprising because it came after 12 years of uninterrupted Republican rule in the White House. The same applies to Gerald Ford, who in 1976 was running for essentially Nixon’s third term, and Lyndon Johnson and then Hubert Humphrey in 1968 running for a third Democratic term. But even if you include Bush and Ford in the mix as far as how sitting presidents have fared in a general election, in 70 percent of cases they have won since 1952. If you want to go back to World War II, Harry Truman won election in 1948 as a sitting president, and the number jumps up to about 73 percent. If you look as far back as the
beginning of the republic, sitting presidents who have stood for reelection in the general election have won about 70 percent of the time, although it is worth noting that until the 1800s, state legislatures generally chose electors. So, there’s a distinct incumbency advantage, especially for first-term presidents that should give Trump an edge in 2020 no matter who the candidate is. Particularly when it comes to presidents, in modern history, the American people, particularly independents, do not aspire to one-party rule. Swing voters tend to decide elections nowadays, and after just one term, they are still a lot more likely to give the incumbent
the benefit of the doubt. Where the rubber meets the road, and what separates oneterm presidents from two-term presidents, will be the primaries. Biden or whoever is going to win the Democratic nomination must first compete and win the nomination, and do so in commanding fashion (rather than being bloodied along the way), to have a good chance to oust the incumbent. Simultaneously, whoever the Democrat nominee is would need President Trump to have a bruising primary contest for the nomination to even out the odds. If Trump is vulnerable, it should be revealed in the primaries. But is William Weld really a credible threat to Trump? We’ll find out soon. In modern history, unchallenged incumbents have tended to cruise to reelection. The likelihood of unseating an incumbent in the primary is close to zero, but real damage can be wrought to harm to his re-election chances. For more information, check out Stony Brook University Professor Helmut Norpoth’s primary model, which offers a guide to some of these trends. (Disclosure: I took his class!) President Trump and Republicans have been in power for just two years and change. Is it already time for a change? History says the odds are not yet. NEWS Truck route continued from page 1
Oxnard resident Pat Brown, who speaks about changing the truck route often during city council meetings. Traffic Engineer Ryan Kim presented the item to the committee and said the modification would eliminate the truck route on Oxnard Boulevard between Gonzales Road and Five Points, plus Fifth Street between Oxnard Boulevard and Rose Avenue. “This modification will enhance traffic safety by minimizing truck and traffic signal collisions between the two segments,” he said. “Staff has collaborated with Caltrans for the proposed truck route
modification. Trucks will still be allowed in the area, if necessary, to make deliveries at local businesses. "Without making the changes, the city couldn’t move forward with plans to make Oxnard Boulevard more bike and pedestrian friendly in these segments,” he said. “Currently, it is not pleasant to walk on these roadway segments due to the big trucks, excessive noise, and exhaust.” The cost to the city will be approximately $10,000 to remove and install new signage, and it will be paid for by the street department’s
operating budget. During public comments, Oxnard Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer Nancy Lindholm said the organization doesn’t object to changing the truck route, but she is concerned about the outreach to the business community. “Between the representative from Port Hueneme and I, we contacted quite a few businesses along Third Street that could be affected by their truck routes and none that I spoke with had any idea that this was in the works,” she said. “The biggest issue is not only contacting the businesses

and asking them to contact the trucking companies because
There is going to be a point where trucks are going to go into areas where they are not allowed because there is no other way to get in and no other way to get out that is a large task for the city. We don’t have the contacts at the chamber to contact those truckers themselves. As far as I know, there has not been any outreach that this will be happening.” Committee Member Bryan
MacDonald said the city might be talking about modifying the truck route, but it is not an absolute prohibition. “I think the key phrase here is “except when necessary to reach a destination,” he said. “There is going to be a point where trucks are going to go into areas where they are not allowed because there is no other way to get in and no other way to get out.” He agreed with Lindholm and said a lot of trucking companies use GPS to monitor their vehicles. “Drivers are told that when you go to this location you will follow our route and they may not be aware of what we have changed in the city,” he said. “It puts the driver in a difficult position where he goes down a route where he shouldn’t have gone, but he’s stuck between the city and his company. Outreach is critical to the success of this, and I am sure the staff is going to do this and
follow up.” Committee Member Tim Flynn asked how the city will monitor the change. “We can do truck counts, so we know the percentage of ADT is going down Oxnard Boulevard, and we can watch that,” Public Works Director Rosemarie Gaglione said. “By doing this and working with Caltrans, the larger trucks when they get their route, they get a transportation permit and are told what route they should take. Once Caltrans knows that this section of Oxnard Boulevard is no longer a truck route, they will also re-route the heavier load trucks and keep them off the boulevard. As they update their GPS software, the truck route would fall off.” Chairman Bert Perello said he supports the item and said one way to track its effectiveness is to monitor the damage to the curbs and gutters along the route.
country, Egypt, he said, and it’s going strong across America. “I love being around the American people who study our culture,” he said. “It’s a tribute to my family and culture, and it feels good that I can explore more art.” Ximena Saez said she performed tribal fusion dancing and got started at a festival in Camarillo. “I just love it,” she said. “How my body reacts to the music on stage, the drums, it’s magical. If you are a good student, it doesn’t take long to learn.” She said the music and dance has a lot of history, but she isn’t too attached to the religious and cultural significance. “It is for my personal growth and my development as an artist and a human being,” Saez said. Elvan has been belly dancing for over 10 years, and she has a cabaret dance style. “There are two different styles of belly-dancing, and you’ll probably see a lot of that today,” she said. Before her performance, she was wearing a caftan, which adds to the mystery. “When I am not performing, I cover up and interact with the people,” she said. “It’s the way I was trained, and it’s professional.” She got her start as a hiphop dancer and stumbled
upon belly dancing later on. “I decided I needed a hobby,” she said. “I like the music, the rhythms and the people I met.” During the day, she is an engineer, but dancing has helped her in many ways. “It gets me out of the office,” she said. “That’s important.” She gets into her own space before a performance. “I take a couple of deep breaths and get in the zone,” she said. Ayse Cerami danced with the Routes Collective and said the group was doing a tribal style belly dance. “The first part of our act is a Turkish Roman piece, and it’s to a nine-eight, time signature,” she said. “It’s fusion, so it has a little more of a modern twist.” The group dances with a 25yard skirt, she said which they use and twirl around during a performance. “A lot of people make their costumes,” she said. “People get things from yard sales and shows. That’s part of the fun.” She loves the sense of community among the belly dancers. “Everybody is so supportive of each other, and we help each other grow,” she said. “That’s the best part.” Jorjana Fizdala ran a busy booth, where people picked up unique and exotic treasures. “I sell all kinds of belly dance and folkloric costuming that is of my design,” she said. “I had many things made in Pakistan, like block prints, silk veils and skirts with blouses and tops that match.” She also sells jewelry, compact discs and DVDs all geared toward the middle east. “I have a performing troop that’s not here today, called Dance Mosaic, and I am the director and choreographer,” she said. Straka said NEMA will hold another dance event in Oct. “We’ve been asked to do an Aphrodite party, so we’ll see,” she said. For more information, visit clubnema.org.

Yesterday, we had a group, Flowers of the Nile and Flor de Kanela come together, they just met, and suddenly they were jamming together and creating music together on stage, and it was happening.” The event also featured Sepiatone, which is a father, two sons and uncle rock n’ roll band. “Because it was raining outside, the hula hoopers couldn’t do their class out here, so they ended up doing hula hoops to Sepiatone, and it was this surreal thing,” she said. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (844) 477-7869 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.STOXPOSTING.COM, using the file number assigned to this case 051454-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. HEALTH Recent infectious disease outbreaks among children are a cause of concern for parents By Staff Reports PASADENA – With measles and whooping cough cases happening regionally and across the country, many parents across Southern California are rightfully concerned about how to best protect the health of their children. Los Angeles County health officials on April 22 reported five confirmed cases of measles – the first in the county in 2019 – were linked to international travel. Also, Orange County health officials earlier this month reported that an infant died following a bout with whooping cough – the first death from that disease since 2007. According to Dr. Robert Riewerts, regional chief of pediatrics with Kaiser Permanente Southern California, it’s important for parents to know the facts, and take the necessary steps to protect their children. “When it comes to both measles and the whooping
cough, immunization is the best answer to help protect your child from getting sick,” said Dr. Riewerts. “In fact, most childhood vaccines are 90 to 99 percent effective in preventing disease. Not vaccinating your
When it comes to both measles and the whooping cough, immunization is the best answer to help protect your child from getting sick. Dr. Robert Riewerts Kaiser Permanente children puts their health at grave risk.” Measles is an infectious viral disease that causes fever and a red rash on the skin, typically occurring in childhood. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can be a serious disease for all ages, but especially for infants.
Courtesy Kaiser Permanente The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that the measles,
mumps and rubella vaccine be given to children at age 12-15 months, and a second dose at
age four to six. For Whooping cough, the CDC recommends a DTaP vaccination at 2, 4 and 6
months old, at 15 through 18 months, and at 4 through 6 years of age.
Department of Public Health monitoring measles exposure By Staff Reports LOS ANGELES (CNS)— UCLA officials said Friday only one student remains quarantined on campus due to possible measles exposure, while less than 50 students and faculty "have elected to selfisolate" at home. Hundreds of people who are students, faculty or recent visitors at Cal State Los Angeles also remain under quarantine orders. Quarantines were announced this week at UCLA and Cal State Los Angeles in response to possible exposure to measles. UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said the county Department of Public Health had notified the university that a student had contracted the measles. He said the student attended classes at Franz Hall and Boelter Hall on April 2, 4 and 9 while contagious. More than 500 UCLA students, faculty and staff were initially notified of possible exposure to the student. After a review of immunization records, that number was later narrowed to 76 students and six faculty members, and all were placed under quarantine orders. "As of Friday morning, UCLA is able to report that one student remains in quarantine on campus," according to the university. "There are now fewer than 50 students and faculty members who have yet to have their immunity status confirmed, and all have elected to self-isolate in their own offcampus residences." On Friday afternoon, county health officials said the specific numbers at UCLA as of Friday morning was 45 students and one faculty member who are under quarantine orders.
CDPH Urges Californians Traveling Internationally to be Fully Vaccinated against Measles By Staff Reports
According to Cal State Los Angeles, the possible measles exposure happened at a campus library. County health officials on Friday said that 215 workers at the library, including some students, were sent home under quarantine orders, and 183 of them remain under quarantine orders. Another 660 people who were confirmed to have visited the library during an exposure period were also contacted on Thursday and given a blanket quarantine order, and of those, 445 remain under the order. However, up to 2,000 people are estimated to visit the library daily, and health officials said they were working to identify anyone who may have been exposed, and a blanker order has been issued for anyone who was at the library during the exposure period.
L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said that the people who were identified as being at the library on April 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m were either workers, people who used the computers and people who checked out books. "If you went to that library between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and you did none of those activities—you're not a worker, you didn't check out a book and you didn't log onto the computer—we don't know who you are. You need to self identify," she said. The latest local measles case was confirmed in a person who arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on April 18, was in the arrival area of Tom Bradley International Terminal that afternoon, and departed from Gate 37A, Terminal 3 later that night.
Other local potential measles exposures identified by county health officials are: • LAX, Tom Bradley International Terminal, Gate 218 on April 1 from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. • UCLA's Franz Hall on April 2, 4 and 9 and Boelter Hall on April 2 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m; • Cal State Los Angeles' main library, on April 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; • El Pollo Loco restaurant, 1939 Verdugo Blvd., La Canada Flintridge, on April 11 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.; and • El Sauz Tacos, 4432 San Fernando Road, Glendale, on April 13 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. People who may have been on-site at the date and time for any of the affected locations, may be at risk of developing measles for up to 21 days after being exposed.
SACRAMENTO—The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) today urged Californians to make sure they are protected against measles. Vaccination is especially critical for those who plan to travel internationally. In 2019 to date, there have been 38 cases of measles in California. This is an increase of 15 cases from last week, and compares with 11 cases at this time in 2018. Of the 2019 cases, 14 cases were in international travelers, 22 cases were due to spread from travelers to persons in California, and 2 cases are of unknown source. Measles is currently widespread in many countries. “Vaccination is the only way to ensure you and your family members will not get measles,” said State Public Health Officer and CDPH Director Dr. Karen Smith. “Many countries are currently experiencing widespread measles activity. Make sure you and your family are fully vaccinated before travelling internationally, and contact your healthcare provider immediately if anyone develops a rash and a fever while you are abroad, or when you return.” The international travel associated with the 2019 California cases include India, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and the Ukraine. “Overall, California has a relatively high vaccination rate for measles,” said Dr. Smith. “Approximately 95 percent of all children entering kindergarten in California have received the necessary two doses of measles vaccine. Our vaccination rates have helped to stop the spread of measles in California. However, as evidenced by the outbreaks to date, the remaining unvaccinated and under vaccinated Californians are at risk. Vaccination is the best way to stop the spread of this highly contagious and serious virus.”

‘Boyz n the Hood' Director John Singleton Dead at 51 By Staff Reports LOS ANGELES (CNS)— Flowers were placed Tuesday morning on the star honoring Oscar-nominated director John Singleton on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one day after he was removed from life support at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center following a massive stroke earlier this month. Singleton's family announced Monday that they had made the "agonizing decision" to remove him from life support. By early afternoon, Singleton had died. He was 51. "John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends," according to a statement released by the family's publicist. "We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want to thank all of John's fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time." According to various media reports, Singleton suffered a stroke earlier this month at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he had gone complaining of leg pain. Singleton, who also directed "Poetic Justice," "Higher Learning," "2 Fast 2 Furious" and the 2000 remake of "Shaft," grew up in South Los Angeles, attended USC and produced
the A&E documentary "L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later." He also co-created the FX series "Snowfall," about the 1980s crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles. Its third season is scheduled to begin later this year. But it was Singleton's directorial debut with "Boyz n the Hood," for which he also wrote the screenplay, that defined his career. Singleton received Oscar nominations for best director and best original screenplay. He was the first African-American ever nominated for the best-director
Oscar, as well as being the youngestever nominee in the category. Thomas Schlamme, president of the Directors Guild of America, said that with "Boyz n the Hood," Singleton "exploded into Hollywood, our culture and our consciousness with such a powerful cinematic depiction of life in the inner city." "John grew up in South Central L.A. with a love of cinema that showed itself early on," according to his family's statement. "He went on to become one of the most lauded graduates of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
Within months of graduating, John returned to South Central to shoot his debut feature, ‘Boyz n the Hood.' The movie, which was unusually shot in sequence, masterfully captured a story of friendship, youth and the peril of hard choices in a community marred by gang violence." The family noted that Singleton took pride in providing opportunities to new talent, including Tupac Shakur, Regina King, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson. "One of the greatest ever to do it," King wrote on her Instagram page. "Thank you God for blessing us with this gift better known as John Singleton. Having trouble finding enough words to share just what you mean to me. Will always love you John! Your spirit will forever shine bright." Singleton's family noted that "like many African-Americans, Singleton quietly struggled with hypertension. More than 40% of African-American men and women have high blood pressure, which also develops earlier in life and is usually more severe. His family wants to share the message with all to please recognize the symptoms by going to Heart.org." Singleton is survived by his mother, Sheila Ward; his father, Danny Singleton; and his children Justice, Maasai, Hadar, Cleopatra, Selenesol, Isis and Seven. The family said details about memorial services will be provided at a later date.
'Avengers: Endgame' obliterates records with $1.2B opening By Jake Coyle NEW YORK (AP)—The universe belongs to Marvel. “Avengers: Endgame” shattered the record for biggest opening weekend with an estimated $350 million in ticket sales domestically and $1.2 billion globally, reaching a new pinnacle in the blockbuster era that the comic-book studio has come to dominate. The “Avengers” finale far exceeded even its own gargantuan expectations, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie had been forecast to open between $260 million and $300 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, but moviegoers turned out in such droves that “Endgame” blew past the previous record of $257.7 million, set last year by “Avengers: Infinity War” when it narrowly surpassed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($248 million or about $266 million in inflation adjusted dollars.) “Endgame” was just as enormous overseas. Worldwide, it obliterated
the previous record of $640.5 million, also set by “Infinity War.” ("Infinity War” didn't open in China, the world's second largest movie market, until two weeks after its debut.) “Endgame” set a new weekend record in China, too, where it made $330.5 million. In one fell swoop, “Endgame” has already made more than movies like “Skyfall,” “Aquaman” and “The Dark Knight Rises” grossed in their entire

runs, not accounting for inflation. Alan Horn, Disney chairman, credited Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, for challenging “notions of what is possible at the movie theater.” “This weekend's monumental success is a testament to the world they've envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world,” Horn said in a statement. To accommodate demand, the Walt Disney Co. released “Endgame” in more theaters—4,662 in the U.S.

and Canada—than any opening before. Advance ticketing services set new records. Early ticket buyers crashed AMC's website. And starting Thursday, some theaters even stayed open 72 hours straight. “We've got some really tired staff,” said John Fithian, president and chief executive of the National Association of Theater Owners. “I talked to an exhibitor in Kansas who said, ‘I've never sold out a 7 a.m. show on Saturday morning before,' and they were doing it all across their circuit.” Not working in the film's favor was its lengthy running time: 181 minutes. But theaters kept added thousands of showings for “Endgame” to get it on more screens than any movie before to satiate the frenzy around “Endgame.” Joe and Anthony Russo's film ties together the “Avengers” storyline as well as the previous 21 releases of the Marvel “cinematic universe,” begun with 2008's “Iron Man.” For an industry dogged by uncertainty over the growing role of streaming, the weekend was a mammoth display of the movie theater's lucrative potency. Fithian called it possibly “the most significant moment in the modern history of the movie business.”

Aliyah Royale undaunted by fast pace of success LOS ANGELES (AP)— Aliyah Royale imagined her TV series debut might be a comedy. Instead, she plunged into an emotionally demanding role in a policeshooting drama that brought the 19-year-old into the daunting orbit of a veteran star and heavyweight producers. Whatever the challenges, Royale said she felt compelled to be part of “The Red Line,” which details the devastating effect an unarmed AfricanAmerican doctor's killing has on his husband, played by Noah Wyle of “ER” and “The Librarians” fame, their adopted daughter Jira (Royale) and the white officer (Noel Fisher) responsible. The eight-episode limited series which debuted on Sunday at 8 p.m. also stars Emayatzy Corinealdi and is from executive producers Ava DuVernay ("Selma,” “Queen Sugar”) and Greg Berlanti ("Everwood,” “Political Animals”). Also notable: it's on CBS, and is among the steps it's taking toward inclusiveness after prolonged criticism for its predominantly white prime-time lineup. To Royale, the story “felt like it was something that hadn't been done before and really should be.” While Wyle's Daniel struggles with depression and Fisher's Paul with guilt, teenager Jira is unmoored, her sheltered life in a loving Chicago home uprooted. “You have a parent taken away from you who was a part of your daily life, someone whose face you're used to seeing every morning and every night. It makes it even worse when it was for reasons that could have absolutely been prevented,” Royale said. “And that reason opens up a new world of racial problems that Jira genuinely didn't know existed.” Royale's credits mostly include short films and, testament to her fashion sense, a 2014 stint on “Project Runway: Threads,” the teen version. She earned the role of Jira after an intense search, said Caitlin Parrish, who with Erica Weiss wrote the play that became the basis of “The Red Line.” Both are showrunners for the series. “We weren't just looking for someone good, we were looking for someone special. And when Aliyah walked in, we knew she was unlike anyone we'd seen,” Parrish said. “She was one of the less experienced young women we read, but she had an immediate connection to the material and a depth of feeling that staggered us. And after her very emotional audition, she showed us her true personality by saying, ‘By the way, I'm fine! I promise!”'
