MEMORIAL DAY EVENT HONORS

America’s Fallen Heroes

By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Port Hueneme— It was a day to honor and remember America’s fallen heroes, May 27, as the Third Annual Memorial Day ceremony brought a big crowd to City Hall to remember and honor those who paid the ultimate price so people can live free.

I G N I TA R I E S came and spoke at the event, and the crowd enjoyed patriotic music courtesy of the Hueneme High School Band. The event was the brainchild of Larry Downing, a Vietnam Veteran and part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Base 3935 in Port Hueneme, who said with the Naval Base in the city, it’s crucial to

have a Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day commemoration for its residents. “We have a tremendous amount of retired veterans who live in the area,” he said. “Memorial Day is to honor the dead who fought for our country, and it’s important that people remember them. Young kids need to see there is a cost involved for the freedom we do have.” The VFW Post was going to keep the event going after the ceremony. “At 1 p.m. the Post is going to be providing hamburgers and hot dogs,”

VFW Member and retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Clay Cowgill said. “If anybody wants to participate, come on over. Everybody is welcome if you can bring a side dish, that is great. We accept cash donations to defray the cost. It’s veterans hanging out with veterans and thanking everybody for their service.” Mayor Will Berg said the event is exceptional and he is out to honor the 1.5 million people who sacrificed their lives defending and protecting our freedom. “This is one of the most important remembrance days we have in this country,” he said. “Larry’s ability to pull this community together has been amazing. Council endorses streamlined permit process

U Pick Blueberries is a sweet treat By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Camarillo— If you’re looking for fresh fruit, most people will go off to the grocery store, pick out a selection and hope for the best. Meanwhile, the smart shoppers will head over to the Gerry Ranch and fill up on fresh blueberries the consumer can pick right off the vine itself. U Pick Blueberries is a great way to get the freshest blueberries and enjoy the control over picking the

biggest and sweetest berries right off the vine. It’s also a great way to get out in the sunshine and take part in an enjoyable event. Ranch owner Ken Gerry and his wife Jo-Anne enjoy having people coming out to pick their own blueberries. “It’s nice to be local,” Jo-Anne said. “A lot of our fruit last year went to Vancouver, and by the time the fruit travels up there, it’s not going to be as good with quality. It’s much more fun to sell it to people

who are close and enjoy it.” Fresh blueberries are the big appeal at Gerry Ranch, she said, and the consumer chooses precisely what they want. The blueberries were large, plump, and since they are fresh, will last a lot longer when you bring them home. People are asked what variety of blueberry they want, Ken said, and most people don’t realize there is more than one variety. “In this county, there are 15 kinds of blueberries, and all of them n Blueberries, see page 2

By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Oxnard City Council endorsed changes to the city’s permit process, May 21, which sets the wheels in motion for shorter turnarounds and fewer headaches for residents looking to get a project done in the city. City Manager Alex Nguyen told the council that shortly after he arrived in 2018, he heard a lot about the permitting process and all the delays. Additionally, he said Chamber of Commerce CEO Nancy Lindholm expressed a lot of frustration about getting a permit in Oxnard and council members told him that residents were complaining. n Council endorses, see page 3
