l a v i t s e F Banana IS A BLAS T By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Port Hueneme— The Port of Hueneme went bananas Sept. 28, as the 8th Annual Banana Festival meant fun, music, dancing, rides, food, shopping and much more.

T

HE event took place at the port where people also got the chance to tour the area and see everything the location offers and all the products that arrive daily. The event also meant lots of bananas being handed out, culminating with a pieeating contest while the band played and people danced the afternoon away. Britni Austin ran Happy Tails Mobile Farm, the first attraction when you arrive, and she and her partners brought her pettable bunnies, chickens, ducks, goats, and her

sheep to the festival which the kids enjoyed. The farm just opened in 2019, and they contacted the festival organizers about taking part in the fun. "It's kind of all over the place," she said. "You never know how we are going to meet people." The kids were having a great time, and Austin gets a lot of questions about the animals attending the event. The team gives out a lot of facts about the animals, so people walk away with some knowledge they didn't arrive with. "We get a lot of how long do they live, or are they a boy or a girl and do they all have names," she said. "We go to kids' birthday parties; we'll go to your house, go to festivals, all kinds of stuff." She loves the festival. "I haven't gotten the chance to explore yet, but I am going to find a banana treat," she said. "I want a banana funnel cake." Austin loves making people happy. "Everybody gets a big smile on their face when they see the animals," she said. n Banana Festival, see page 6

Music at the Maritime benefits the Oxnard art community By Chris Frost chris@tricopuntysentry.com Oxnard—The 7th Annual Music at the Maritime was a joyous event that brought the community together to celebrate art, model ships and the many programs offered at the venue. Attendees enjoyed a delicious meal, drinks, fellowship, and music from the special guests, "The Kim Project," a jazz band that delivered a rock-solid performance that everyone loved. The group also held a live auction and left with prizes like a Tiki Hut CI Cruise for 6, donated by Arlene

and Keith Beckwith, a Night at the Museum for 25 guests, courtesy of the Museum, and an original Sergio Aragones drawing, given by the artist. Much of the value at the Museum is due to Gloria Mason who said the gala fundraiser keeps the doors open and supports the many programs offered. "We look forward to having the people here and give them a special night," she said. "Sponsorships do it, and they are pretty high, but they are important because we need the money to stay open and be here for

the public." The venue features incredible artwork and ship models, and some of them are over 300 years old and all originals. "Plus, we have different shows throughout the year, and we have the ASMA artists showing their work upstairs," she said. "The music and entertainment will be fantastic," she added. "I've got my paddle for the auction. Our fund and need for tonight is going to be coming up to date with technology. We're working on getting augmented reality brought into the Museum. It's

going to be exciting if we can come up to the 21st century." The backbone of the Museum remains its volunteers, she said, and everyone working at the gala volunteered their services to make the night a big success. "I have over 10,000 hours volunteering here," she said. "I was the volunteer of the year one time (2004), but we have volunteers that can be the volunteer of the year every year." Community Resource Fair connects people to services By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-- Southwinds Park was buzzing with excitement, Sept. 28, as the premier Community Resource Fair meant free backpacks and school supplies for the kids.

A

TTENDEES also had access to healthcare programs, college scholarship opportunities, tutoring, adoptable pets, a free lunch, and more more. Recreation Coordinator Julie Estrada handled the backpack and school supply table and said they are helping kids who are not ready for the school year. "We were able to secure some funding for our nonprofit Police Activities League (PAL) to provide 1,000 backpacks and school supplies for the kids," she said. "The Southwinds Neighborhood

Council approached us and wanted to do something for community resources for their neighborhood. We've been doing this for about 12 years. We've done things in coordination with the Oxnard Elementary School in the past, and we decided to expand on their initial idea." Many kids are dealing with older backpacks, Estrada said, and they're missing some essential supplies. "If we are able to step in help out, that's the whole mission of the Police Activities League," she said. "We want to make sure we extend our reach as far as possible. In Jan. 2018, we turned the Southwinds Youth Center into a PAL site, so it allows us to extend our resources into this area." Kids have lots of backpacks to pick from, and the children love bright colored backpacks. "We always have to make sure they purchased enough of those," she laughed. "I love making sure the kids have a place that is safe for and fun them. They get to pick their supplies. That's important."

Adrian Pulido thinks handing out school supplies to kids is a cool activity. "I didn't know this was going on until yesterday," he said. "I love giving back to the community." He is also a boxing champion and got involved at the center when he saw other kids boxing in the basketball courts. "I've been in it for four years, and I never want to get out," he said. Estrada said Pulido trains at the Mid-City gym. "They all get together, the Colonia, Mid-City and Southwinds centers and do sparring and cross-training," she said. Joseph Zamora handed out rulers and highlighters to the kids and loved helping people that need supplies. "At first, my mom forced me into going to the PAL, and the more I went, the more I liked it," he said. Ultimately, he apologized to his mother for giving her a hard time about

going to the PAL. "I did," he admitted. Cultural and Community Services Director Terrel Harrison said he is proud to see the park come to life at the resource fair. "If you look around, this is what we are trying to do in the City of Oxnard," he said. "We have a real partnership with the community. This dream started a year ago with an idea from the community. They linked in with the Police Activities League, and this is what you have, an event that is helping people and connecting resources sparked by the community." The PAL raised the money for the backpacks and far exceeded their goals. "We wanted to raise enough money for 200 backpacks, and we ended up raising enough money for 1,000," he said. "A lot of employees and local businesses contributed funds, with the support of the California and the National PAL programs. There is a host of things and people who care about this community." The Oxnard PAL has a long-

standing partnership with many groups at the event, and they were more than happy to help. "They support us through the year and know we want to do positive things in the community," he said. "We also have Jacqui Irwin's office here. She's always been a strong supporter of the City of Oxnard." Council Member Vianey Lopez represents Southwinds Park and loves seeing all the people and kids come together to benefit everyone. "People were lining up before the fair was set up anticipating this," she said. "This is a great opportunity to bring resources together in a good community." She loves seeing all the people being served at the fair and getting what they need. "I'm here to support the work," she said. "Everything you see happening today is from the leadership of the neighborhood council. They're the ones ingrained in this community, and I support what they're doing. If anyone

knows what the need is here, it’s the leadership. They're doing a great job bringing people together and looking out for what the need is and bringing those resources here." Assistant City Attorney and Oxnard PAL Board Vice President Jason Zaragoza served hotdogs and had a great time. "I am helping and working with the kids in the youth program out here," he said. "I am trying to show them the value of community service and what we can do when we come together to help people out." Zaragoza came up through the PAL program and the recreation department, he said, and as a child, he went to the youth centers, and that kept him off the streets. "I didn't have the best upbringing and just the fact that I had the Oxnard Youth Center to go to kept me on the straight path," he said. "I went to college and grad school, and I knew I wanted to come back and help in some capacity. As a PAL director, I can pass on what was given to me. My objective is to give back in the same way the Oxnard PAL gave to me." He mentors at the PAL and engages kids every week and tells them his story. "In the circumstances they're in, it is possible to get out," he said. "Everybody around you is doing things, and you don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. I tell them my story and tell them you are going through some rough stuff, but the PAL program will give you the tools you need. Whatever you want to do, there is somebody at the PAL that can help you do that. I see myself in a lot of these children." Oxnard Police Department n Resource Fair, see page 11

Walk to end Alzheimer’s fights for the first survivor

By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Collection at River Park was the place to be, Aug 28, as the Walk to End Alzheimer's (ALZ) came off without a hitch and was a classic example of people coming together to help others.

T

HE two-mile walk raised $80,757 to date and featured families coming together to support those who continue to battle the disease daily. Walkers carried Promise Garden Flowers in blue, representing someone with Alzheimer's or Dementia, purple, for people who lost someone to the disease, yellow for people who support and care for those suffering from the disease and orange for everyone who supports the cause and shares the vision of a world without Alzheimer's. The walk takes place in more than 600 communities across the United States and is the world's largest event that raises money and awareness of the disease. Proceeds fund care support and research to find a cure. The big crowd, all dressed in purple, enjoyed camaraderie, snacks, music, and lots of fun while learning that work continues to battle ALZ. Alzheimer's Association California Coast Chapter Board Chair Teresa Valko said about 10 years ago; the Memory Walk became the Walk to End Alzheimer's because it is more than just memory. "We want to address Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia by

raising funds for awareness in this fight," she said. "That's what the walk is all about." Her mother lives with latestage Alzhe_ imer's, she said, and she will be the eighth person her family lost to the disease. "On her side, we have a 100 percent occurrence rate," she said. "She's already lost both of her siblings, her mother, all of her siblings and her father before that. I am a motivated volunteer." Scientists are learning about the pathology in the brain involved with ALZ, Valko said, including the mechanisms and proteins inside the mind. "It's so exciting right now, and we have so many researchers working on this disease on a scale and in a way that has never happened before," she said. "It's an exciting time to be a part of this movement and a part of the fight. We are starting to see the fruition of all our work coming to a head. We're learning more about what we can do to lower our risk. Pretty soon, we are going to learn what we can do to bring an end to this disease, all together." It saddens her seeing so many people who get touched by the disease and the numbers continually increasing. "They will increase every year until we have a way to prevent it, treat it or cure it," she said. "The public's recognition of this disease and willingness to be vocal about it helps us to drive our mission to have a world without Alzheimer's. We see that in the walk, every year." Many families find themselves in a crisis involving a loved one, Valko said, which brings the dangers of Alzheimer's to the forefront. That person can be in a compromised level of safety. "It needs to be a community effort," she said. "It starts at home with the close caregivers and understanding the person living with ALZ and how their brain functions in this new process. Being able to communicate with them effectively and understand where the difficulties can be for that person. As a community, we need to understand that these people are still part of our

neighborhood, our community and still live." She wants people to recognize and embrace people living with Alzheimer's, making them more comfortable, and make them part of the world. There are times when someone living with Alzheimer's will adopt an affectation as their personality changes. "It's hard to say what drives a change in personality, but it is not uncommon," she said. People living with Alzheimer's aren't the only ones facing a change. There are 14 million unpaid caregivers and family members, that must care for loved ones, daily. "At the Alzheimer's Association, we offer services for those caregivers, and it starts many times with support groups," she said. "We have educational services for those caregivers, classes, and classes about Alzheimer's Disease itself, what it is, and what to expect. We also have legal and financial planning classes and care consultations we do with families." All of those services are free. "That's why the walk is so important," Valko said. "The money we raise here today helps us provide those services to the public." People who worry about whether or not they have Alzheimer's need to go to the website, ALZ.org, and read through the 10 signs

of Alzheimer's. "It explains what normal aging is, and what may be a sign of Alzheimer's," Valko said. "If there are signs you are experiencing, go to your physician, and get an assessment. It's better to know so you can get in front of the disease and get your planning in place." Dietary changes are a huge focus in today's research. Mediterranean diets lower the risk of Alzheimer's and dementia. The MIND diet reduces the threat by the most significant percentage. Foods in the MIND Diet include whole grains, berries, green, leafy vegetables, other vegetables, olive oil, poultry, and fish. "Anything that addresses cardiovascular health is good for brain health," she said. "It makes sense because most of the blood your heart is pumping will go through your brain. They are all interconnected." She credits the Alzheimer's Impact Association that allows the group to get funding from the NIH (National Institute of Health) approved quickly. "We've done phenomenal things," she said. "In the last five years, we've more than quadrupled the amount of funding that goes into research. That's why all this great news is coming out right now." Orlando Calleros and Ricky Ojeda were trying to get people to sign petitions to get Congress to apply for more money to find a cure for Alzheimer's. Calleros has Alzheimer's, and raising awareness and money is essential to him and his family. "There are other families in my situation," he said. "I look forward to these events. Everybody who signs the petition that goes to Congress gets an opportunity to raise money to find a cure." He was diagnosed five years ago, and it didn't take long after his daughter Brianna got involved with the Alzheimer's Association. "After that, I followed," Calleros said. "I'm here, I go to all the events, and Brianna works for the Alzheimer's Association. I support her as much as I can." He works hard every day to improve his quality of life. "I eat well, I exercise and try to

stay active," he said. "I try to read, but everything I read is gone 20 minutes later." Ojeda does whatever his fatherin-law needs. "I love coming out here and having people fill out these forms to send to their Congressperson," he said. "My wife Brianna has been doing this for about two years, and I do what I can." Betty and Doug O'Hara brought her dog Kahuna, and the family plans to walk with her mom Lupe who has stage 6 Alzheimer's. "We're here to support the walk because it is personal for us," Betty said. "We're going to put her in the wheelchair, and she'll be able to participate." She loves taking part in the walk and sometimes the days with Lupe are not happening. "It's easy for people not to understand because it doesn't take a direct path with everyone who has it," she said. "It's an awful, unfair disease." The disease teaches her family to live in the moment. "Appreciate the small things," she said. "You don't feel alone when you are part of this community. Somebody understands you and supports research and awareness." Oakmont at Riverpark Marketing Coordinator Laura Alvarez is proud to be part of the effort. Oakmont was an elite sponsor of the walk. "We're trying to engage the community and be supportive of the Alzheimer's Association," she said. Oakmont has a social model of programs the company created for its residents, she said, which stimulates appetites, sparks activity and involves all residents emotionally and physically. "We don't have activities just to keep them busy," she said. "We create activities for them to be creative and continue to have that opportunity to enjoy life." Residents feel vital and like a part of the community. "We pride ourselves on that," she said. "We pride ourselves on developing those programs. Whether it is music, and how do we involve them, or how do we create a scenario where they can be a part of it." Alvarez has a Master's degree in Public Policy Management from USC, and she feels her purpose in life is helping others. "Being a part of Oakmont has given me the ability to help our seniors," she said. "At times, our senior community gets forgotten. I n Walk, see page 11

OPED To grin or not to grin, is my dilemma Dr. James L. Snyder Through the years, I have experienced one dilemma after another. I remember my father once told me, “Son, when life delivers you a dilemma, make lemonade out of it.” To which I looked at him with a big grin and said, “Is there any dilemma I can make a root beer out of it?” My father did not grin back. This may have been the beginning of my career as a grinner. Rarely a day goes by that I do not find something to grin about. I have earned a Ph.D. in Grinology. One problem I have discovered in this is that I do not know when not to grin. This has caused me a dilemma without any lemonade whatsoever or root beer. On my wedding day, I grinned all day long and nobody ever had to ask me the question, “What are you grinning about?” Everybody knew. I never had any problem with grinning and nobody ever challenged me about my grinning. I guess it is just my nature to grin about everything. After my wedding, however, everything changed. Most of it for the good I must confess. I have no regrets or anything of that nature. While I am saying this, you can imagine I am grinning. Nothing has made me happier in life than marrying the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. At the time she was not the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage, but as time went by and I became a pastor she took on the role. I’m not sure if she was born with the gifts and talents to take on this role, or if she learned step-by-step what it takes. That being said, I can look back in my life and I can grin about everything. Then things changed. By things, I mean me. It was a very simple thing that happened and could happen to anybody. My wife and I were sitting in the living room having a cup of coffee and talking. As we were talking unbeknownst to me, I was grinning. It is something that happens automatically to me.

“What are you,” my wife said in a very somber tone, “grinning about?” I thought I was in trouble at first. I did not understand what she was talking about my grinning. I simply looked at her and stated, “Huh.” “You’re grinning!” “Oh,” I said, “I was just thinking about the first time we met.” Then I laughed heartily. “What was so funny about that?” That was the beginning of trying to explain why I grinned all the time. I explained to her how that day was the real beginning of my life. Then, she grinned. That began a wonderful conversation of those beginning days of our life. So often, something happens and I find myself grinning. I well remember the time my wife was walking around the house everywhere. I stopped her and said, “What are you doing?” “I’m looking for my glasses.”

I thought I was being set up so I grinned very cheerfully. “What are you grinning about?” The way she said it made me take the situation rather seriously. I did not know what kind of trouble I was in for or if she was setting me up for something. “Have you,” she snapped, “seen my glasses?” I did not know what to say because I could see her glasses on the top of her head where she often puts them. Then she discovered where her glasses were and just looked at me. I was still grinning. Recently, she had some problems with her back and I called the ambulance to take her to the local ER. I took my two daughters with me because both were medically trained, one a registered nurse the other an EMT. My wife was in awful pain and we could barely move her. The local

ambulance crew took her to the ER and the doctors begin to work on her. One of the medications they used was some form of morphine. I let my daughters oversee that because that was completely above my pay scale. Soon the medications were working and her pain was beginning to rescind. We all were relieved. On the wall was a very nice picture of a landscape with trees and bushes and so forth. I noticed my wife looking at that picture and then she said, “Isn’t a very nice picture of a pickle?” She then looked at me and said, “What are you grinning about?” One of my daughters said, “I guess the medication is starting to kick in.” It took us a day or two to explain that it was not a picture of a pickle, but rather a picture of grass and trees. I have been enjoying my grinning ever since. Occasionally my wife will look at me and say, “You’re not still

grinning about the pickle are you?” “Why no,” I say, trying to hide a grin, “have you found your glasses yet?” Trust me when I say, she did not grin back at me. Thinking about this I was reminded of one of David’s Psalms. “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them” (Psalm 126:2). My philosophy has been, find something every day to grin about and you will have a happy life along with fresh lemonade. Dr. James L. Snyder, pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, lives with the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage in Ocala, FL. Call him at 352-687-4240 or e-mail jamessnyder2@att.net. OPED HUD says deregulation, not affordable housing, needed to solve homelessness By Charlene Crowell For more than a decade, economists, lawmakers, and others have heralded the nation’s economy. Often citing how unemployment has declined as new jobs have been created, or Wall Street trading and major bank profits rising, some might be led to believe that all is well in America. But as Sportin’ Life in the folk opera Porgy and Bess sang, “It ain’t necessarily so.” On September 16, California Governor Gavin Newsom joined by state officials representing cities and counties wrote a letter that urged President Donald Trump to recognize homelessness as a “national crisis decades in the making that demands action at every level of government”. “Mr. President—shelter solves sleep,” wrote the California officials, “but only housing solves homelessness.” Governor Newsom and company were absolutely correct. State and local officials across the country also reckon with limited resources to house the nation’s half million homeless and its accompanying persistent poverty. Whether eastward from Washington, DC to Baltimore, New York, and Boston, or westward from Los Angeles, to San Francisco, and Seattle, or even other locales— America’s homeless are a visible presence that not everyone has been a part of an economic recovery. In 2018, 67% of America’s homeless people were individuals. The remaining 33% were families with dependent children, according to a report by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. Further, according to a new 2019 report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, “Our nation is currently in the midst of a long period of economic expansion. Yet stagnant wages, rising housing costs and

inaccessible job opportunities keep many children and families trapped in impoverished communities. And despite economic growth, we have not seen significant reduction in poverty.” The Casey Foundation report also found that between 2013-2017, Black and Native American children were the most likely to live in concentrated poverty. For example, half of Michigan’s Black children live in high poverty. Other states where child poverty runs the risk of homelessness are Mississippi (43%), Ohio, (43%), Pennsylvania (42%) and Wisconsin (44%). Yet despite the availability of

homeless and poverty research, HUD Secretary Ben Carson sent Governor Newsom a stark rejection of California’s appeal for federal financial assistance to alleviate California’s homeless. Secretary Carson’s September 18 reply said in part, “California cannot spend its way out of this problem using Federal funds…More vouchers are clearly not the solution the State needs. To address this crisis, California must reduce its regulatory burdens on housing.” Advocates for homeless and lowincome people strongly disagreed with Secretary Carson’s assessment. “We know that the number one

“California’s homeless may be the largest by state,” continued Torres, “but the problem is a national one that deserves to be recognized and acted upon.” In 1987 there was an expression of national will to respond to America’s homeless through enactment of the McKinney Homeless Act. That statute created the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness dedicating the ongoing support of 19 federal agencies to prevent and end homelessness. HUD is one of the participating agencies. The Council on Homelessness even has a written plan, Home, Together, that lays out federal remedies over the fiscal years of 2018-2022. According to the 2018 report by the Council on Homelessness, “Crisis services are the critical front line of communities’ responses to homelessness, helping people meet basic survival needs while also helping them swiftly secure permanent housing opportunities.” Someone should give Secretary Carson a copy. And if that takes a while, here’s what Congresswoman Maxine Waters advised the leadership of the House Appropriations Committee this past June: “In the richest country in the world, it is simply unconscionable that this many of our neighbors across the country are living without a place to call home,” said Waters. “Several communities have experienced severe increases in their homeless populations, further illuminating that homelessness is a crisis. The federal government must recognize the national crisis at hand and support communities and local service providers who are on the streets helping.”

cause of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing,” said Megan Hustings, managing director of the National Coalition for the Homeless. “Consumers are already struggling with crushing debt from student loans and medical expenses, or facing triple-digit interest rates when they attempt to access small dollar loans,” noted Marisabel Torres, Director of California Policy with the Center for Responsible Lending, “When they also have to pay some of the highest housing costs in the nation, it is unfortunately unsurprising that there are such large numbers of homeless people in many of California’s large cities.”

Charlene Crowell is the Communications Deputy Director with the Center for Responsible Lending.

PROTECT CHILDREN NOT GUNS! By Marian Wright Edelman “Sometimes, I sit back and I have to escape from what I see and hear every day.” I hope this opening line of Milwaukee 11-year-old Sandra Parks’ award-winning essay on gun violence will make enough adults wake up and act to stop the slaughter of children. An aspiring writer, Sandra entered her school district’s Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest in sixth grade with “Our Truth,” her devastating account of growing up in a neighborhood and nation terrorized by guns. “We are in a state of chaos,” she wrote. “In the city in which I live, I hear and see examples of chaos almost every day. Little children are victims of senseless gun violence.” Two years later on November 19, 2018, Sandra became a victim of the senseless gun violence she described in her essay when she was struck by a stray bullet watching television in her bedroom. She died at 13 with so much of her life left to enjoy. She begged for adults to act to protect children from guns—a plea the Children’s Defense Fund has been making since 1994 when Chicago inner city children told us their greatest fear was dying from guns during a focus group we conducted with Hart Research Associates. We then began our Protect Children Not Guns campaign with brilliant pro bono help from a great Minneapolis ad agency Fallon McElligott Rice, now Fallon Worldwide. After the 1999 Columbine High School massacre the Children’s Defense

Fund published ads featuring searing images like the student falling from a window into the waiting arms of police officers in riot gear with the caption “Remember when the only thing kids were afraid of at school was a pop quiz?” Every ad and poster carried the same message: It is time we protect children instead of guns. Yet, in the twenty years since we began our campaign, an entire generation of children has grown up fearful of gun violence as adults refused to act to protect them. Children and all of us have learned over and over again there are no guaranteed safe spaces in our country where hate, bigotry and terrorism continue to collide with unfettered access to weapons of war. We cannot worship, go to the movies or other public spaces, shop for groceries or sit in our homes with security from gun violence. CDF’s new Protect Children, Not Guns report analyzes the latest fatal and nonfatal gun injury data for children ages 0-19 from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It continues to reveal a shameful crisis worsening in a nation that refuses to protect children and teens from the scourge of gun violence: • 3,410 children and teens were killed by guns in 2017—the greatest number since 1998. • 21,611 children and teens were killed or injured by a gun in 2017— one every 24 minutes. • Gun violence was the second leading cause of death among children and teens of all races 1-19

years old and the leading cause among Black children and teens. • Gun violence killed more children and teens than cancer, pneumonia, influenza, asthma, HIV/AIDS and opioids combined. • Homicide is the leading cause of gun death among children and teens. • Black, Hispanic, American Indian and Alaska Native children and teens are disproportionately likely to be killed or injured with

guns. • Guns killed more than twice as many preschoolers as law enforcement officers in the line of duty in 2017: 93 children under 5 were killed compared with 42 law enforcement officers in the line of duty. • Children were not safe from guns in every state between 2008 and 2017. Deaths ranged from 18 in Hawaii to 2,977 in California. • The deadliest states were

Alaska and Louisiana with about 8 gun deaths per 100,000 children and teens annually—more than twice the national rate. • Since 1963, four times more children and teens were killed with guns on American soil than U.S. soldiers killed in action in wars abroad. • U.S. children and teens are 15 times more likely to die from gunfire than those in 31 other highincome countries combined. This continuing indefensible gun violence against children should shame us all. How many more child shootings is it going to take for enough decent people to stand up and say enough and protect every child’s right to live? Inaction is not an option. I hope every parent, grandparent, youth, teacher, faith and political leader will step up to the plate and act to pass common sense gun violence prevention measures a majority of Americans support. I am deeply grateful that on September 26, 1,000 children and parents with Jack and Jill of America, Inc., of which I am privileged to be an honorary member, took copies of Protect Children Not Guns 2019 to their members of Congress on Capitol Hill asking: “Does my life matter to you?” The answer cannot continue to be no. Please read CDF’s latest report and demand your lawmakers read and respond with urgent and long overdue action. Marian Wright Edelman is President Emeritus of the Children's Defense Fund.

NEWS Banana Festival continued from page 1

Corry and Conrad Nagashima loved the mobile petting zoo. "I fed the goats and said hi to the bunnies," Conrad said. "Conrad fed the chickens." Corry also had an excellent time. "They're nice, friendly little animals," he said. "This has been a great festival. I love all the booths." Eric and Brianna Burton got their picture taken in full banana costumes. "I love bananas," Brianna said. "I saw something about this on Facebook, so we came here." Eric loves getting dressed up. "It's a blast," he said. "This

is a good time. We already have some bananas. I love that it's free to get in and it is free parking." Jan Straka brought Club NEMA to the festival, and the group planned to dance throughout the day. "Jared Gambon is going to perform for us," Straka said. "We have other performers coming throughout the day. I have been taking pictures in front of our banana backdrop all day." This was the first time Club NEMA performed at the Banana Festival. "My students wanted to come here this year," she said. Gambon planned on

popping at the site. "It's a street dance style that focuses on being on the beat," he said. "It all comes to being on the beat with hits, which is like the exposure of the body." He loves being part of Club NEMA. "I get to show people what I get to do," he said. Ojai resident Colton Quirk got to touch a snake at an exhibit. He was a little nervous at first but enjoyed the experience. "It was good," he said. "My favorite thing about the snake was petting it. The skin felt like skin. I like the green color snake." Colton wanted to bring one

home and keep it around the house. Grandma Peggy Quirk had no plans to purchase a snake. "Absolutely not," she said. "It can go to their home." Findley Quirk liked the snake and said it didn't bite. "It was cool to feel around the neck," she said. Landon Quirk said he wasn't too scared, and he disagreed with his grandmother about bringing home a snake. "Once my sister did it, I decided I'll go for it," he said. "I saw how happy she was when she held it, so I wanted to see what it was like." Elsa from Frozen and Chase from Paw Patrol were on-hand to take pictures with

the kids and adults. "Our business is called Party Stars, so we go to all kinds of events, as well as hosting them," Elsa said. "We have all these characters come to their parties, so it’s magical for them." HPC partnered with the Tree Factory to bring cannabis to the festival. "We do delivery, and we've partnered with Tree Factory, General Manager Ericka Tutino said. "We share the same menu, and the Tree Factory does all our deliveries for us. We don't have a delivery charge, but we do have a delivery minimum, depending on where you're located." The dispensary is a one-ofa-kind location. "We are the only femaleowned dispensary on the green mile," she said. "We focus on educating the public, rather than being the stoners on the third floor. We do a lot of community outreach. I do talks with the Ventura County Women's Group, and I am doing my first one with the Men's Group on Oct. 10. We do talks with the

Chamber of Commerce, and we do food drives with the local food bank." She welcomes everyone to come in. "All you need to be is 21 years old with a valid driver's license," she said. "There is no pressure to buy. You can come in a talk to one of our consultants." The location is getting ready for the holiday season. "Even though we sell cannabis, we're still a retail location," she said. "We do packages for Christmas, and we also do Valentine's Day, Mother's and Father's Days, so we have specials for all those holidays. The best bang for your buck will be on Black Friday." The location also sells plenty of edibles, like cannabis butter, cookies, and chocolate. "We have medicated drinks like our old-fashioned lemonade," Tutino said. "It tastes just like the drinks you get at Disneyland, but it's way more fun. We have a medicated version of a breath spray, and it tastes nice and minty."

week, we specialize in one area of the Museum and focus on that." She called it a fun and rewarding experience. "I've met wonderful people, including Joyce Nelson, whose family donated the main collection here," she said. "That's how the Maritime Museum got started." Oxnard Harbor Commissioner Jason Hodge for the Port of Hueneme thinks art, history, and culture in the county must be supported. "They do a great job of recruiting volunteers for their events," he said. "The thing they need the most is the public's support, and the people who can provide the gifts to keep this afloat." Once you arrive at the Museum, he said the first thing you see are smiling and vibrant faces of the many volunteers and the passion they have. "This is the type of communal effort we need more of in Ventura County," he said. "I've been here for 44 years, and this (the harbor) has always been an under-utilized asset for the county. It's going to take a strong vision between the county, the City of Oxnard, and the community to make it

the success that it can be. There is no reason why this can't be a world-class destination." Kimberly Ford from "The Kim Project" said she was thrilled to play the gala for the first time. The band relaxed and enjoyed dinner before the show. "This was important to me," she said. "It is based on an album I put out a few years ago called "Songs in the Key of Sea," and it's all oceanthemed jazz standards. They discovered me and the music." The album was important to her, and she worked in underwater film making for a while. "It seemed like a good fit," she said. "I give some of the proceeds from the album to the National Marine Sanctuary. The album also has a DVD and a public service announcement for the National Marine Sanctuary. I am excited to do it in an environment that is receptive like this." Seeing the art in the Museum, she said is affirming and restoring. "It's beautiful that someone is restoring and keeping the maritime tradition alive," she said. After a show, each member does something different to come down from their performance high. "We have a performance buzz going, and we get a lot back from the audience," she said. "It circulates between the audience and the performer, so it lifts you higher. A lot of us go home and play some more. I listen to music I feel inspired by."

IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. A public auction sale to the highest bidder for cash, cashier's check drawn on a state or national bank, check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, or savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state will be held by the duly appointed trustee as shown below, of all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by the trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described below. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 848-9272 or visit this Internet Web site www.elitepostandpub. com, using the file number assigned to this case 17-47097. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Kaiser Permanente announces 4-year draft labor contract LOS ANGELES (CNS)— After five months of intensive negotiations, Kaiser Permanente and a coalition of 11 unions have reached a 4-year labor agreement that covers 85,000 employees around the nation— most of them in California—and staves off the prospect of a strike, Kaiser said Wednesday. The draft agreement provides for annual pay increases and maintains what Kaiser calls "excellent" benefits while also creating a program to reduce the national shortage of health care workers, according to a Kaiser statement. "If ratified, the agreement will position Kaiser Permanente—including its members, employees and local communities—for a sustainable future as the organization works to make its high-quality, integrated model of care even more affordable and accessible

they will not make less than in their former position. • Workforce Development Fund: A new multimillion-dollar fund will be created to provide educational opportunities for Californians who may not otherwise be able to pursue a career in health care; • Retirement security: The Agreement preserves the existing defined benefit pension plan along with other "strong" retirement benefits. • Outsourcing: The parties have agreed to a list of jobs that will not be outsourced or subcontracted for the life of the contract. Coalition employees represent hundreds of job classifications, from optometrists and pharmacists to maintenance and service workers. The Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions comprises 11 local unions from three international unions.

in all its regions," the statement said. Arlene Peasnall, interim chief human resources officer for Kaiser Permanente Health Plan and Hospitals, said management members "greatly respect and value our employees who deliver on our mission every day. This agreement is a testament to the dedication, compassion and skill those employees bring to work every day and demonstrates that Kaiser Permanente and the Coalition

have a shared commitment to affordability for our members." The agreement, according to the statement, includes: • Guaranteed wage increases each year through 2023 in Northern and Southern California, • Opportunities for career growth: Kaiser Permanente employees will have the opportunity to move into new roles in a training capacity after pursuing the education needed for the job, at an adjusted Step 1 pay scale; they are guaranteed

has welcomed us, and there is a need." Tom Cronley from Edward Jones is a grand champion for the event, and he was pleased to be walking with his daughter Marin. "The whole event is to raise money for Alzheimer's, and we raised $2,150 for our team, and it got us into the champion's club," Tom said. "We're a national sponsor for the Alzheimer's Association, and our branch realizes that people are affected by this." Edward Jones builds relationships, he said, and they make sure their clients do well

through financial management. "What Alzheimer's does is the exact opposite," he said. "It destroys wealth, and it's expensive to battle this. It destroys relationships you have with people your whole life." Marin came armed with her Fitbit and planned to get her steps in during the walk. "I read on the sign back there it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States," she said. "It's big and needs to be stopped." Looking forward, people and families facing this disease need to know they are not alone.

"That's why we do things like this walk, to raise awareness," Valko said. "I am a huge animal lover, and I saw him from across the field, and I came over. I like bully breeds, and they are misunderstood and wonderful companions." Foster Coordinator Jennifer Haskins said the agency has close to 100 dogs available for adoption. "We have even more cats," she said. "Jukebox is a senior bully breed dog who came into the

shelter as a stray. He is available for adoption and loves people. He's been in playgroup with other dogs at the shelter and does well. Something unique about Jukebox is he's deaf, but that doesn't stop him from being a wonderful, lovely dog. He stands out among other dogs in the shelter, and he is learning sign language." Actor Forest Whitaker goes from crime boss to music man By Lynn Elber LOS ANGELES (AP)— Forest Whitaker plays a real-life crime boss in Epix's new drama series “Godfather of Harlem” with the commanding intensity expected from him. What's less expected is the movie musical he filmed in London this summer, a U-turn for the actor who started out a singer.

Jingle Jangle,” a Netflix movie set for a holiday 2020 release, and “Godfather of Harlem” highlight Whitaker's range and why he switched to acting—this despite the vocal talent that earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern California's music school and attracted his first agent. “I didn't think I would be able to affect the people from my own communities. I didn't think they would even watch” the likes of light opera, he said. “So I made the decision that acting would be the way, and I walked away from music.” After earning a degree from USC's drama school, Whitaker gained notice for early films including “Platoon” and “Good Morning, Vietnam” and was honored at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of jazz great Charlie Parker in 1988's “Bird.” His searing performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in 2006's “The Last King of Scotland” put him in the company of the handful of African Americans to receive the best actor Oscar. It was youthful idealism that helped him reject work that didn't match his aspirations. For Whitaker, acting didn't equal stardom or a

steady gig; it was a quest, as he put it, to find “the pilot light of each person” and understand human connections. “I was offered a soap opera, I said, nah. That has nothing to do with what I'm trying to do. And it ultimately worked, where I ended up getting to play some very unique characters throughout this 30-something years,” Whitaker, 58, told The Associated Press. “And I'm still getting the opportunity. This character of Bumpy Johnson is a unique and iconic figure to get to play.” The 10-episode “Godfather of Harlem,” debuting 10 p.m. EDT Sunday, is part of a string of TV movie and series projects he's done over the years, including a guest turn in Fox's hip-hop drama “Empire” that let Whitaker briefly put his vocal skills on display (as he did in the 2013 film “Black Nativity”). Whitaker plays Johnson in the early 1960s, returning home from

prison to find Italian American gangsters muscling in on his New York City turf and young activist Malcolm X on the rise. Whitaker, also an executive producer for the series, said he'd had only a glancing knowledge of Johnson from films including 1997's “Hoodlum,” which starred Laurence Fishburne. “I really didn't know the depth of his personality or the depth of his influence on the community. I didn't realize or understand the relationship between him and Malcolm X. I didn't know about his family life,” Johnson's links to the civil rights movement or what drove him, Whitaker said in a panel discussion. “That was interesting to me as something to develop and something to be able to be a part of as an actor. It was amazing.” Whitaker's on-set demeanor was critical to the production, according

to executive producer Chris Brancato. “Everyone captures his energy, which is so sweet and gentle,” he said at a recent Epix red-carpet event in New York. Vincent D'Onofrio plays Johnson's chief rival in crime, with Ilfenesh Hadera as Johnson's wife; Nigel Thatch as Malcolm X, and Giancarlo Esposito as Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Paul Sorvino and Chazz Palminteri also are in the cast. The score is composed by by Mark Isham, with tunes from the ‘60s or earlier are featured, along with contemporary songs produced by Swizz Beatz with artists including John Legend and DMX. The story and its people were carefully researched through books and interviews with those who lived in Harlem during Johnson's time, Brancato said. Ellsworth Raymond Johnson, nicknamed Bumpy as a child, was born in 1905 in South Carolina and died of heart failure in 1968. “Wherever we could we sought to put their actual attitudes and specific words in their mouths,” Brancato said in the panel discussion. “Dramatic license was taken to create scenes, but the entire goal was to endeavor to keep the spirit of the times and of the characters as we saw them.” It's a big leap from a crime drama to the family friendly “Jingle Jangle,” in which Whitaker plays an eccentric inventor and grandfather. It was also a rewarding one as he rediscovered his singing voice and something more: His character's journey and the upbeat attitude of director David E. Talbert showed inspiration can be found outside “the more down and sadder” places familiar to Whitaker. Talbert is “so joyous about it. It's teaching me so much I need to know, and this character's teaching me something. I don't always live in that kind of joy,” the actor told the AP.

State tells Fox Canyon to get it groundwater sustainability act together, or they do it for them and they won’t like it

By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com

Oxnard—The conversation about higher pumping fees for groundwater continues with a reverse osmosis plant possibility, which takes seawater and cleans it to Fox Canyon's standard and supplants it into groundwater. "There would be a replenishment fee generated by the extraction in Fox Canyon that would pay for that project, Glenn Shephard said. The water purveyors themselves are also looking for opportunities. "One of them, the Casitas Municipal Water District, is along the Ventura River heading out of

Ventura, heading to Ojai," Kim Loeb said. "They have the concept of a horizontal tunnel they would drill into the mountain that would extract water that's in the mountain. It's an example of people that are looking for opportunities to find additional supply-side projects to develop over time." To provide context, he said ocean desalinization is something people talk about, and a number of coastal communities have done that, and it is feasible. "That's the most expensive water you can get," he said. "We're talking about $2,500 to $3,000 an acre-foot. It leaves a high energy footprint. It's feasible and will provide as much

water as people are willing to pay for. It's not the go-to plan, necessarily. There's a lot of other things that can be done in-between. That will be our next phase to study those kinds of things. There are other opportunities that can provide more bang for the buck." One opportunity, he said, is to put in a piping infrastructure to pump groundwater in areas where it is less impactful. That would provide water to the coast so they can reduce their pumping and increase the yield in the basin. That has already started to some extent. "It minimizes the negative impacts of the pumping," Loeb said. "We know there's a lot of opportunities

there, so that will probably be where a lot of focus is in the future. It will be expensive, but nothing like a desalinization plant." Looking forward, he said different people would look at various challenges, like cities; they look at pumping fees, and others will look at managing the resource. "The state legislature and the governor passed this law," he said. "They said you locals get your act together and get into sustainable management, or the state will come down and manage your water, and you won't like the way that we do it. That's basically what the state has told us."

From parade to pandemic: Museum looks at 1918's deadly flu

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—On Sept. 28, 1918, in the waning days of World War I, over 200,000 people gathered along Broad Street in Philadelphia for a parade meant to raise funds for the war effort. Among the patriotic throngs cheering for troops and floats was an invisible threat, which would be more dangerous to soldiers and civilians than any foreign enemy: the influenza virus. Officials went ahead with the parade despite the discouragement of the city health department about the ever-spreading virus. Within 72 hours of the parade, all the hospital beds in Philadelphia were full of flu patients. Within six weeks, more than 12,000 people died—a death every five minutes—and 20,000 had died within six months. Despite the human toll, there

has been no memorial or public remembrance of flu victims in the city. Until now. The Mutter Museum, known for its collection of organs preserved in jars, deformed skeletons and wax casts of medical maladies, is launching new permanent exhibit on the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic in Philadelphia. “Spit Spreads Death” will open on Oct. 17, and will feature interactives mapping the pandemic, artifacts, images and personal stories. “It's still referred to by some

historians as the forgotten pandemic, because how many Americans are conscious of it today?” said Robert Hicks, the museum's director. The exhibit takes its name from health department signs that popped up around the city as the pandemic spread. Ahead of the exhibit's launch, the museum will present a parade Saturday along the same stretch of road where the ill-fated Liberty Loan Parade took place. A sort of moving memorial, the parade will feature about 500 members

of the public honoring victims of the pandemic, four illuminated floats and an original piece of music performed by Grammywinning choir “The Crossing.” “The parade has turned into an interesting commemorative act,” said Matt Adams, co-founder of Blast Theory, the artists' group creating the parade. Anyone can sign up to participate and can choose the name of an actual flu victim to honor while marching. Marchers will be given a sign with the name of the person they chose and will move along the parade route flanked by the illuminated sculptures. Members of city's public health community have been urged to join in. “This is all about the process of remembering what the risks are in public health, because that is a crucial way for us to stay safe today,” he said.

Saudi prince takes ‘responsibility’ for, then denies involvement in journalist's murder NEW YORK (AP)—Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a television interview that he takes “full responsibility” for the grisly murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but denied allegations that he ordered it. “This was a heinous crime,” the 34-year-old crown prince told “60 Minutes” in an interview that aired Sunday. “But I take full responsibility as a leader in Saudi Arabia, especially since it was committed by individuals working for the Saudi government.” Asked if he ordered the murder of Khashoggi, who had criticized him in columns for The Washington Post, the crown prince replied: “Absolutely not.” The slaying was “a mistake,” he said. Khashoggi entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey on Oct. 2, 2018, to collect a document that he needed to marry his Turkish fiancee. Agents of the Saudi government killed Khashoggi inside the consulate and apparently dismembered his body, which has never been found. Saudi Arabia has charged 11 people in the slaying and put them on trial, which has been held in secret. As of yet, no one has been convicted. A U.N. report asserted that Saudi Arabia bore responsibility for the killing and said the crown prince's possible role in it should be investigated. In Washington, Congress has said it believes the crown prince is “responsible for the murder.” Saudi Arabia has long insisted the crown prince had no involvement in an operation that included agents who reported directly to him. “Some think that I should know what 3 million people working for the Saudi government do daily,” the powerful heir told “60 Minutes.” “It's impossible that the 3 million would send their daily reports to the leader or the second-highest person in the Saudi government.” In an interview Thursday in New York, Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, told The Associated Press that responsibility for Khashoggi's slaying “was not limited to the perpetrators” and said she wanted the crown prince to tell her: “Why was Jamal killed? Where is his body? What was the motive for this murder?” The crown prince also addressed the Sept. 14 missile and drone attack on Saudi oil facilities. While Yemen's Iranian-allied Houthi rebels claimed the assault, Saudi Arabia has said it was “unquestionably sponsored by Iran.” “There is no strategic goal,” the crown prince said of the attack. “Only a fool would attack 5% of global supplies. The only strategic goal is to prove that they are stupid and that is what they did.” He urged “strong and firm action to deter Iran.”
