Oxnard-- Channel Islands Harbor was a winter wonderland, Dec. 8, as the harbor imported 36 tons of snow for the kids and featured free pictures with Santa Claus himself.
K
IDS were decked out in winter gear for the event, which included climbing to the top of the snow mountain and then sliding back down on their snow disc saucers. Of course, there were lots of snowball fights that pitted parents against children. Larry Warner and his son Hunter has lived in Ventura County their whole lives and enjoy the snow but going to where it falls is a mission. “When I heard there was going to be snow here, Hunter got all excited, and I couldn’t say no,” he said. “A lot of kids showed up with different kinds of sleds, and they are letting all the kids play with them.”

Santa’s Sleigh Boat was a crowd favorite at the Parade of Lights.
Parade of Lights shine across the harbor By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Channel Islands Harbor Parade of Lights was a festive event that brought out a giant crowd to South Oxnard, Dec. 8. The parade was full of partying and massive crowds at the shore, as people cheered on the event and enjoyed a warm and festive evening. Boats decked out in holiday specialties paraded across the harbor, as Santa Claus decked out in his holiday sleigh boat brought a massive cheer from the shore. Craig Sholes and his wife Maricela brought their grandsons Owen and Layton Anderson to the parade, and the two kids had decorative, festive balloons that lit up. The couple just moved to Oxnard earlier this year. “We’re at “The Colony at Mandalay Beach,” and we wanted to see the parade,” Craig said. “Now we are neighbors of the area.” The couple said they waited to arrive because they didn’t want the kids to be outside too long. “Obviously, it’s a pretty mobbed event n Parade, see page 3
Oxnard City Council expands to seven members By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard - It’s a new day for the Oxnard City Council, Dec. 11, as the group has expanded from five to seven members. This brought a packed house for the swearingin ceremony, followed by council comments and a reception. City Clerk Michelle Ascencion read the canvassing of the results and was congratulated during comments by Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez for guiding the city through two elections in 2018. “Incumbents Tim Flynn, Carmen Ramirez, and Bert Perello were reelected to another term and will soon be joined by our two new council members-elect, Gabriela Basua and Vianey Lopez,” Ascencion said. “Mayor Flynn’s term will be two years, which is the full term for mayor, council members Perello, Ramirez and Basua will serve full four-year terms for districts one, two and five respectively, and council

member Lopez’s term for district six will be for two years, and the seat will be up for re-election to a full fouryear term in 2020.” Ascencion said the city’s proposed cannabis business tax and three measures related to the Seabridge community passed easily. “There were 42,656 ballots cast in this election which represents a
turnout of approximately 57 percent of registered voters in the City of Oxnard,” she said. “Nearly two-thirds of those ballots, approximately 62 percent, were cast on vote-by-mail ballots.” After the oath of office, the council members spoke, starting with Lopez who said it is an honor to be sworn in as the first representative in district six.
“I don’t think my family ever imagined when we first arrived in this country that we would be here and so involved in our political process and what this country is all about,” she said. “I want to thank them and acknowledge them more than anyone for their support from day one when I first ran for school board. From the moment that I shared with

them that I would be running for city council, there was no doubt in their minds that we could do this and it was thanks to them that I am here today.” She said the city faces many challenges they are both aware and unaware of, both now and in the future. n City Council, see page 6

Snow continued from page 1
“I just moved out here, and it’s my first time,” she said. “It’s beautiful out here, and I think it’s good for the kids.” Gerard Thomas and his wife were busy with their kids who were having a blast in the snow. “There is not enough snow for me,” he said. “Their mother wanted to do this, and she woke me up on my day off and said let’s go to the snow hill, and I said ‘Yea right, we are in California.’” He loves watching his kids play and said his family just moved to California from New Hampshire in November 2017. “Last December, we got out to Big Bear, but I don’t know if the funds are going to allow for that this year,” he said. “This is probably going to be the only snow we see for this season. We are going to the boat parade tonight.” Channel Islands Harbor residents Carlyn and Carly McElhose said the duo has been coming to the snow event since Carly was a baby. “This is good family fun,” Carlyn said. “It’s festive and exciting to be here. Then the Parade of Lights tonight. It’s a family tradition.” The duo will “absolutely” have a snowball fight, and Carlyn said she always wins but admitted that she might let her daughter win. Carly loved the snow and knew her friends would be there, so there was no decision needed to come out. “It’s fun, and my mom plays in it too,” she said. “My friends are inviting me to the dock (to see the Parade of Lights) tonight.” Valerie Garbe said the Channel Islands Harbor Christmas Parade and feeling the snow in southern California is a fantastic feeling for the kids. “They feel that winter wonderland come to them,” she said. “We’ve been coming for five years, and it’s one thing that we never miss every year. This is one of the best things you can do during the holiday season. Let your kids be kids.” Paizley Garbe had on a big pair of sunglasses and said she was looking a little Hollywood. “I love the snow,” she exclaimed. “Paizley is going to win the snowball fight.” Erin Marquiss brought her daughter Abby to the snow pile, and she was overwhelmed with excitement. “We were walking and saw the snow,” Erin said. “This is Abby’s first time in the snow, and we happened upon it. We thought it was going to happen tonight.” Erin said her husband lived in Washington for 10 years and isn’t a big snow fan. “He said it isn’t fun,” she said. “I was born and raised here, and my husband is from Texas, and it was 36 degrees once, and I thought I was going to die.” Abby loves the snow and remembers it from Nature Camp. “Mommy showed me how to make a snowball,” she said.

VIP Dinner honors Melting Pot Ministry heroes By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard-The Huenemean Bohemian Artist Melting Pot Ministry celebrated its members who make a difference in the community, Dec. 6, with a VIP dinner in their honor which was a celebration of the Oxnard Masonic Cemetery and Monarch Butterfly habitat on the site. The event featured a performance by Tom Tom the Yo-Yo Man (Tom Von Allmen), an award presented to Wayne Dey for his volunteer work and a big thank you to all the people who contributed to maintaining the Masonic Cemetery. The dinner took place at Tomas Café and featured lots of delicious food, followed by pumpkin pie for dessert. “We wanted to bring people by who helped us with the adopt-a-plot

On Nov. 6, 2018, at about 8:45 p.m., officers contacted 25-year-old Oxnard resident Mario Catalan in the 1300 block of Junewood Way. During a search of Catalan under his probation terms, officers located a set of car keys in his pockets and a laptop in his backpack. Officers discovered that the laptop did not belong to Catalan. Officers were able to contact the owner of the laptop and learned that the previous day she had reported stolen her vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla. The victim’s laptop was in the car when it was taken. The car was located in the immediate area. The keys that were in Catalan’s pockets unlocked and started the stolen vehicle. Officers arrested Catalan for the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and two violations of receiving stolen property for the car and laptop, all felonies. Our city is currently experiencing a significant increase in stolen vehicles. To combat the problem, the Police Department is prioritizing taking a proactive, comprehensive approach in the prevention, enforcement, and investigation of stolen vehicles. A significant percentage of the stolen vehicles are preventable. The Oxnard Police Department would like to remind residents of the following tips to prevent a vehicle from being taken: Never leave your car unlocked, not even for a minute. Never leave your keys in the car, even if you think they are really “hidden.” Don’t leave your car idling and unattended because it is unnecessary (it doesn’t get cold enough here), it is unsafe, illegal, and someone can steal your car. Wheel locks, brake pedal locks, and steering wheel locks are also effective. If anyone has any information regarding stolen vehicles contact Ventura County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS or venturacountycrimestoppers.org to submit a tip via text or email.

OPD arrest gang members On Dec. 8, 2018, at approximately 6:20 p.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department Special Enforcement Unit conducted a traffic enforcement stop in the area of Ninth Street and “C” Street in the City of Oxnard. Officers identified Eric Ixta, the driver, and Alvaro Cervantes, a passenger in the vehicle. Both subjects are documented gang members in the City of Oxnard. Further investigation into the vehicle resulted in SEU officers locating two loaded handguns, ammunition and narcotics. The number of drugs found indicates they were for sales. Cervantes is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing or being in control of a firearm. The gun was located on his person. The second firearm was found on the floorboard below driver Ixta. Both subjects were arrested for several felony charges related to possessing and being in control of the firearms and being in possession of narcotics for sale. The canned food drive made sure that folks less fortunate will have full plates this Christmas.
Hip Hop mindset and OPD makes a difference Food drive benefits less fortunate families
By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Oxnard Police Department and HipHop Mindset, a local civic group that blends dancing with positive community action, teamed up Dec. 8, to raise a bunch of food for families who may have gone without this Christmas. The event was a celebration of goodwill that brought a large group of donations to Plaza Park, along with kids of all ages who danced and had a good time. Hip-Hop Mindset Leader William Venegas said, “The Collection” used to have a canned food collection, but the event was moved to Ventura, so they decided to bring it back to the city. “We’ve collected about 1,000 cans so far,” he said. “We partnered up with the Oxnard Police Department to do this. We planned this event out in the last two months.” Food donated at the event will benefit Food Share of Ventura County and help some of the fire victims who recently lost their homes. "We have some performances scheduled today, Zumba classes coming up and games for the kids to play,” he said. Venegas loves working with the kids and the community while helping those in need. Participants at the Hip-Hop Mindset canned food drive danced to the beat and enjoyed contributing food.
Community Affairs Manager Melissa Valdez said Venegas approached her about doing an event where they could collect toys or food for the less fortunate. “We came to the conclusion that we could collect food and donate it to Food Share and we know that it’s going back into our community here in Ventura County,” Valdez said. “We have a collection box at the police station, and we’ll be collecting through the end of the month. William (Venegas) was
able to coordinate through some of our local schools, and I believe one school was able to collect over 600 cans alone last week.” Valdez donated boxed potatoes, canned corn and vegetables. “I think the name of this event that William’s team came up with, 'One Can Makes a Difference,' is clever,” she said. “That echoes in every aspect of our life. There are ways we can find to give back. Maybe not everyone can give a can,
but they are here and supporting a great cause, and they are bringing their kids out to something positive in downtown Oxnard.” Two officers stopped what they were doing on their patrols to build can trees, she said, which turned out nicely. “I am going to go out and hiphop dance a little bit, maybe not on the stage, but it’s hard not to move when you are out here,” she said. “I always dance when I cook.” Loretta Mitchell enjoyed the afternoon and showed off her dance steps with the kids. “I do a hip-hop version of Zumba, called U-Jam, and just got Zumba certified a couple of weeks ago,” she said. “I dance to anything I hear.” She was cheering on her niece and came out to support her performance. “I’ve been dancing since I was little,” she said. “A friend took me to a U-Jam class, and I am always dancing, in the store, in the streets, or wherever. This is another way of getting in shape and dancing at the same time.” The Oxnard Police Department is still celebrating the holiday season, as on Dec. 15, Santa Claus will visit the police station between 2-5 p.m. along with lots of activities for the kids. “It will be similar to our Halloween Spectacular,” Valdez said. “It’s another opportunity for us to invite the community to our home and interact with our police officers. It will be a fun day for the whole family.”
and pretty famous in this area,” he said. Maricela said the family went over to the snow event at Channel Islands Park and got to visit with Santa Claus. “That’s where they got the balloons,” she said. Owen knew what he wanted for Christmas and was having a great time with his grandparents. “I want a remote-control dump truck,” he said. Maricela said she makes a big tamale bash on Christmas Eve. “On Christmas, we usually have turkey,” she said. “We have the best of both,” Craig added. “It’s a double whammy. Every year, we get family members in the house, and we make a couple of hundred tamales.” Ted Tyler and his dog, Bear, who is a Keeshond, has been attending the Parade of Lights for the last 20 years and is a fixture at Channel Islands Harbor. “I have a boat out here,” he said. “I am going to relax and enjoy the parade. The weather is spectacular tonight. It’s always cold and windy with rain, and this is gorgeous.” Tyler said he likes looking for superheroes on the water and the Parade of Lights delivered as Batman sailed across Channel Islands Harbor. “Sometimes, somebody will have a spectacular display,” he said. Dana Johnson was well-positioned on the dock and enjoying the evening. It was her fourth Parade of Lights. “It’s a great time,” she said. “Everybody is friendly, happy and in a great mood,” she said. “Merry Christmas.” She has not participated in the parade yet, she said, and can’t get her husband to decorate their boat. “We’re going to have to work on that,” she said. Cheryl Mahoney was enjoying her hot chocolate and said the weather is comfortable outside and perfect for the parade. “I can see the boats as they are coming through,” she said. “The boat with the American Flag is beautiful. I love being out on the water and outside.” She doesn’t own a boat and lives in Ventura. “We try to do this every year,” she said.
Heroes and helpers fill Target Christmas event for kids a child’s dream come true By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Target location at “The Collection” was a busy place, Dec. 6, as the Eighth Annual Heroes and Helpers event, brought out a massive crowd of kids and adults full of holiday cheer that spilled over into the store aisles. Each deserving child, 32 of them, from the Oxnard School District came armed with a $200 gift card and were ready to shop with their partner, a member of the Oxnard Police or Fire Department. The kids also got the opportunity to visit with Santa and get a picture, although many members of the police and fire department took advantage of the chance to get a photo with Kris Kringle. Police Chief Scott Whitney thanked the crowd for enthusiastically supporting the event. “Thank you to Starbucks for letting us take over their area here today,” he said. “Thank you to Target and “The Collection” - always a great sponsor.” The event is special to Whitney

because it reminds him of the great people he works with every day. “The willingness of people to step up in the community and this is what
happens when you have people who are willing to step up,” he said. Event Organizer Sergeant Daniel Shrubb said the Oxnard Schools
select a well-deserving student from each school and brings them to the event. “Target, as well as a bunch of other sponsors, put together a $200 gift card for that student,” he said. “They go and have a shopping spree for themselves or their families. At the end of the day, the students buy for their families.” He said the event used to be called “Shop with a Cop” and has been a staple of the department’s good cheer with the community for years. “My school resource officers go out, and there is an application form they fill out,” he said. “The counselors at their schools know their kids, and they select the students, and we bring them here.” Shrubb said there is a mixture of kids at the event. “There are kids who are doing good things at their schools or a well deserving kid that has some circumstances in their life,” he said. “We can come help out.” He called Heroes and Helpers a special event. “It’s a great time to kick off the season and what a better way to do
that to bring the community, police, fire, and schools together,” he said. Oxnard Fire Department Battalion Chief John Colamarino took advantage of the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and said Heroes and Helpers is a vital activity. “We’re connected to the community, we’re looked up to by the children, and we need to give something back,” he said. “This is a way for us to participate and be part of a special time of the year for them. We’re just overgrown kids ourselves.” John wants his kids to be healthy and happy this Christmas. Veronica Castanon had a student at the event. “This is a great opportunity for our students,” she said. “They get toys and get to connect with the officers,” she said. “It’s a great event.” Clemente Bravo brought a student who was thrilled about being picked for the shopping spree. “This is my first year here, and I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “It’s nice to see the community coming together and supporting our students.”

OPED Be Sure Your Grin Will Find You Out Dr. James L. Snyder Christmas is a wonderful time of the year and I appreciate it so very much. I recognize I’m difficult to purchase presents for because I have my books, my pens, what else do I really need? Once in a while I get a Christmas present to beat all Christmas presents. This year was one of those “once in a while’s.” It’s a pretty well known fact that the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and myself differs when it comes to culinary likes and dislikes. How we got along for so many years is truly a miracle, I suppose. She, for example, loves vegetables, particularly broccoli. (Excuse me, I need to go and wash out my mouth.) On the other side of the table, I love Apple Fritters. (Excuse me, I need to relish the thought of an apple fritter.) Throughout the year she tries tricking me into eating vegetables. I’ll take so much, but then I draw a line in the sand. That sand sometimes gets a little disheveled and I know who is disheveling it. I have tried to tell her that a good mother will make Apple Fritters for her family. She dismisses that and says quite emphatically, “No good mother will ever do anything of that nature. A good mother will make vegetables for their family.” And so the “discussion” goes on and on. We were watching the news as they were reporting on the funeral of the 41st President of the United States. Someone was giving some kind of a eulogy concerning that president and said something that caught my attention. According to this eulogy, the 41st President of the United States hated broccoli. Let me repeat that, he hated broccoli, as well as all other vegetables. I looked at my wife and said, “I’m in good company.” She just dismissed that and went on with her work in the kitchen. I grinned a lot and relished the moment. I just don’t get too many moments like that. Then, something wonderful happened. Christmas cards were coming
from family members all over the place. I think people send an early Christmas card to make sure we will return a Christmas card. I was opening the Christmas cards and came to one that made my Christmas the delight that it has become. Some of my wife’s sisters were sending her throughout the year recipes from their mother in their mother’s own handwriting. I didn’t take much note to that because I’m not allowed in the kitchen to do any
cooking. Very nonchalantly I was opening these Christmas cards and then I came upon “the” Christmas card. I noticed it was from my wife’s sister and as I opened it there was a little card inside that made my life a true joy. The sister was sending in her Christmas card one of their mother’s recipes written in their mother’s old hand. You will never guess what the recipe was in that card!
When I opened it up I could not believe my eyes. My eyes have fooled me quite a bit down through the years, but this time I had to rub them several times in order to believe what I was seeing. There in their mother’s own handwriting was her recipe for “Apple Fritters.” I had it in my wife’s mother’s own handwriting. You can hardly imagine my joy. There is no Christmas joy equal to the joy I felt looking at this recipe.
Now, how was I going to present this to my wife and get all the benefit out of it? I put all the cards back together and laid this particular Christmas card on the top. I invited my wife to come and sit down and look at some of the Christmas cards that has come from the family. She sat on the couch and I gave her the Christmas cards and then returned to my chair to watch her opening up these Christmas cards. In the meantime, I had such a big grin on my face and I didn’t know how to hide it. As my wife is opening up the Christmas card she looked up at me and said, “What in the world are you grinning about?” “I’m just having a happy Christmas season.” Then she opened the Christmas card containing her mother’s recipe it her own handwriting for “Apple Fritters.” She just stared at it for a few moments and then’s looked up at me with one of her classic stares. “What did you find?” I said as calmly as I could. “You know exactly what I found.” She was quiet for a few moments as she looked at that handwritten recipe from her mother. “So,” I said rather slowly, “when can we expect that recipe to be used in our kitchen?” She looked at me, then look back at the recipe card and spontaneously we both burst out into hilarious laughter. I don’t think I could have received a better Christmas present than that. Proof positive that good mothers do make Apple Fritters. Maybe they’ll be some changes to our kitchen. Thinking about that I was reminded of a Scripture in the Old Testament. “But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). No matter what it is, it will always be exposed in the end. Rev. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship. He lives with the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage in Ocala. OPED Don’t Let Small Dollar Loans Ruin Your Holidays In this wonderful time of the year when family and friends gather in good cheer to celebrate the holidays, nearly everyone has a number of lists. From greeting cards to shopping for gifts, decorations and more, lists are made and reviewed to keep pace with the barrage of seasonal activities. But if holiday lists seem bigger than budgets, turning to a highinterest, “small dollar” loan can turn joy and merriment into a financial quagmire. The good news is that holiday financial hangovers that predatory lenders give, do not need to be a part of your celebrations. Just keep walk or drive past the brightly-colored signs advertising high-interest, small dollar loans. Both payday and car title loans can provide quick cash; but the harms these loans create will likely linger well past the winter’s cold. In truth, these predatory loans often lead to consumers paying more in interest and fees than for the money borrowed. Research by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) has found that predatory payday loans drain $4.1 billion in fees from consumers annually—borrowers who typically are unable to fully repay the original loan, usually in two weeks’ time. With average annual interest rates averaging 391 percent, 75 percent of all payday loans go to borrowers with more than 10 loans a year. Like payday loans, car title loans are often marketed as an easy way to get cash without a credit check—but with interest rates that tend to be 20-
30 times higher than that of credit cards. The average car title loan of about $1,000 can only be secured by signing a personally-owned car as collateral. Further, the loan may only be a fraction of the marketable value of the vehicle. While the lender holds on to a car title, the borrower is faced with triple-digit interest and, in one of five cases, a whopping 20 percent, the loss of personal transportation. As harmful as payday and car title loans are, other seemingly harmful small dollar transactions can also cause financial havoc. If you believe pre-paid cards will always avoid financial rip-offs, think
again. Before paying cash for this convenient form of plastic, read all of the fine print that explains the terms and fees that come with its usage. Terms and options can and do vary significantly. Many include a range of fees from activation, to learning your current balances, reloading monies and in some cases fees for inactivity. By the time all applicable fees are assessed, the amount of money actually available on that prepaid card can shrink and shortchange how far it can help on purchases. Similarly, the convenience of debit cards can easily trigger overdraft

research has shown that although overdraft fees vary by institution, the average $35 overdraft fee on a debit card is double the amount of the overdraft itself. Banks engage in a range of unfair and deceptive tactics to maximize these fees, which can amount to hundreds of dollars over the course of just a day or two—talk about a holiday damper. Too many overdrafts can lead to involuntary account closures. This holiday season try adding a full measure of practical sense to help your dollars preserve the spirit and joy of the season—it only comes once a year!
Remembering My Dear Friend and Freedom Fighter Dr. John Maguire By Marian Wright Edelman My dear friend Dr. John Maguire readily admitted his childhood in Montgomery, Alabama and Jacksonville, Florida didn’t make him a likely champion of racial equality. But when he passed away recently at age 86, John—the president emeritus of Claremont Graduate University, former president of the State University of New York (SUNY) Old Westbury, and recipient of many accolades and honors—was widely respected as an extraordinarily committed advocate for civil rights and social justice. His story is a powerful example of the power and possibility of personal growth and change. John described his parents as “radical segregationists,” although he also said they didn’t see themselves as “bigots” and believed there was a difference between the two. But he was a product of his place and time until that senior year of high school when everything began to change. He was chosen to go to an integrated YMCA baseball camp in Ohio where players were deliberately assigned roommates of other races. He remembered passing a soda around among his new group of friends and suddenly realizing it was the first time his lips had touched something a Black person’s lips had touched, a simple moment that shattered an imaginary taboo. When he enrolled at Washington and Lee University the following fall, professors there slowly began to challenge his old racial assumptions. He attended a conference at Crozer Theological Seminary during his sophomore year where he was again assigned a Black roommate: Martin Luther King, Jr. Right away he found Dr. King and his ideas brilliant and compelling. It was the start of a friendship that lasted until Dr. King’s death and a relationship that influenced my friend John deeply as he was starting to change his own world view.
Throughout a Fulbright year in Edinburgh, divinity school and doctorate at Yale, and postdoctoral research at Yale, Berkeley, and in Germany and the Philippines, my friend John’s perspective kept broadening. Eventually, he didn’t just come to understand and accept the Civil Rights Movement in the South—he jumped in himself as a fervent ally and participant. This was true to who he was: a “happy warrior” ready to act justly. In 1961 Dr. King encouraged him to join the Freedom Rides with his divinity school classmate and friend Dr. William Sloane Coffin, Jr. I begged to join them but they thought it too dangerous for a woman! I was furious having grown up in the South and having been jailed for sitting in at Atlanta City Hall’s cafeteria in 1960 without shields from Jim Crow. Life magazine featured John Maguire’s experience seeing the South’s violent racism from the other side and being arrested in Montgomery, his former hometown, for trying to order coffee at a bus station. He was eventually represented by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund’s Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg and Yale Law professor Lou Pollak in a case that
went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. By then John was a faculty member at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. While many of his colleagues cheered him on and helped pay his fines and legal costs, some colleagues and alumni were deeply critical of his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. But John was not turning back. A few years later he helped Vincent Harding draft the historic antiwar sermon “Beyond Vietnam” that Dr. King gave at Riverside Church on April 4, 1967, exactly a year before his assassination, warning America against succumbing to the “giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism” and telling us we needed a revolution of values: “A true revolution of values will soon cause us to question the fairness and justice of many of our past and present policies. On the one hand we are called to play the Good Samaritan on life’s roadside, but that will be only an initial act. One day we must come to see that the whole Jericho Road must be transformed so that men and women will not be constantly beaten and robbed as they make their journey on life’s highway. True compassion is more than
flinging a coin to a beggar. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” Once John came to see that Jericho Road clearly, he spent the rest of his lifetime helping to “restructure” unfair structures. He told an interviewer he knew he’d made a difference during the Civil Rights Movement when he realized he’d opened his parents’ eyes. One day his mother said to him, “We see your friend Martin King on TV all the time, and he looks so tired. Tell him that if he wants a place to rest…he can rest here. We won’t bother him.” When he heard her say that he wept. After Dr. King was killed John became director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change, and throughout his life he kept helping transform people’s points of view—especially the generations of students whose lives he touched and who learned from his example as president of SUNY Old Westbury from 19701981 and then Claremont Graduate University from 1981-1998. My friend John fought passionately for increasing diversity in and access to higher education throughout his life and remained
convinced that solving the problem of access to higher education had to start long before students entered the doors of a university or graduate school. He also knew that the problem was much wider than education and spoke out against disparities in health care, the criminal justice system, economic development and more. John and his extraordinary wife Billie were loving and faithful friends and unceasing supporters of the Children’s Defense Fund and other organizations and people who, like them, wanted to help bend the arc of the universe towards justice. At every step he did it with a trademark sense of joy and with his beloved Billie and their daughters and grandchildren at his side. Bill Moyers and his wife Judith were close friends of the Maguires, and Bill said the words that come to mind when he thinks of John are “Passionate heart. Searching intellect.” Judith added: “Scarred by tragic losses, John managed to find abundant joy in life as a priceless friend and fearless leader…and [Billie’s] support of John through thick and thin was central to his ability to do all that he did.” At a dinner party many years ago John was reportedly asked what he would want his epitaph to be, and answered: “He had a passion for justice and excellence and he was steadfast.” No words better sum up his marvelous legacy. And like him, we and our nation must embrace his lessons, example and bold willingness to change to ensure a more just nation and world fit for all God’s children. Marian Wright Edelman is Past-President of the Children's Defense Fund, whose Leave No Child Behind’s mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. Cozza said since the day she met Dey, he’s done nothing but work, and she was proud to recognize him at the dinner. “We want to thank him and honor him with this certificate,” Cozza said. Dey was honored to be recognized as Volunteer of the Year and said he’s always loved working and has been recycling since he was a fiveyear-old and still does. “I enjoy life, I do a million
different things, and I might write a book,” he said. “I’ve led nine lives and lead at least four lives right now. It keeps me young.” Dey heard about the Masonic Cemetery and wanted to contribute to the Monarch Festival, Nov. 9, and put in a lot of time. “We got rid of a lot of the junk there,” he said. “I give most of the credit to Mr. (Roberto) Garcia who bought the property and proposed redoing it. Hopefully, it will be part of the park service in Oxnard. He’s already talking
with them (the City of Oxnard) about getting water and restrooms there. The Monarch butterflies go there every year, and it’s a sanctuary for them.” Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez said the Melting Pot Ministry is doing beautiful things to protect the Monarch butterfly. “They are bringing back our pollinators,” she said. “They are beautiful and important to our food supply, and humans are doing too many things unconsciously to destroy them, which could ultimately be our downfall. I love that we want

to find a way to promote the pollinators with native plants. The native people of Mexico believe Monarchs are our ancestors. I have been to the place near Mexico City where there is a Monarch sanctuary, and you would never believe it until you get here, but Monarchs are loud from the flapping of their wings.” Artist Daython Moore said he met Cozza at the Church of all Nations and was honored to be part of the celebration. “They seem like good people,” he said. “The food is terrific.” Von Allmen said it took him a long time to learn all his yo-yo tricks and said while most people did it as a hobby, he was addicted to his yo-yo. “My great-grandparents

“I am hopeful that with the rest of the council we will do great things for the city,” she said. Councilman Bert Perello thanked the crowd for coming and the people who worked to get him on the dais including the people who donated to his campaign. He also thanked the elected officials who endorsed him and the people in the city who supported him when he as an at-large candidate. “I’m grateful that I won this election, but the City of Oxnard is composed of all these neighborhoods,” he said while holding up a district map. “I came into this organization from the neighborhood council organization, where no man or woman was any better than any other man or woman, whatever their sir name, the color of their skin, where they lived or how much they made, and I intend to continue that,” he said. “I want to thank everybody who ran against me, past and present. I offer my door to any of them who have an idea to try and work with them.” The city is going to face challenges in the future, he said, and while there have been misconceptions about his attitudes and desires, he will try and do better. “I am not going to change on my basic philosophy,” Perello said. “We’re all the same, and we’re all in the same boat.” He asked everyone to say
hi to the city and elected officials when they see them. “The next time you see a city employee, thank them for the job they are doing,” he said. “There are people who pick up your trash, make sure that while you are sitting in your seat out there, no one is breaking into your house. There are people who make sure the water and sewer plant are working. The lights are working, and they’re doing a good job.” Councilman Bryan MacDonald said the future is bright for the city, but people have called him saying they can’t talk to him anymore because they are not in his district. “You are absolutely wrong,” he said. “You can talk to me anytime, and I will still listen to you and still work with you, and I’ll compare this to a team sport,” he said. “The quarterback is only as good as the line who protects him, and that means it has to be a team effort. It’s the same thing with this council. It has to be a team effort.” Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez said she is starting her third term and is proud that she has never missed a council meeting. “I want to affirm and re-commit to the work we have to do in our city, and Oxnard is a city with many opportunities but many challenges,” she said. “We need all of you sitting here and at your homes and especially my two new colleagues to work together to improve our
city. We need to be positive, creative and go forward to meet the challenges we have.” Basua said she was humbled to be part of such a historic moment for the City of Oxnard and she wanted to thank her mom, dad and brothers who walked with her and campaigned. “You’re all getting shoes for Christmas,” she said. “To my wonderful kids, they also campaigned, thank you so much for all the encouragement and to my campaign team who worked numerous hours on the campaign and the website. I can’t thank you enough.” She also thanked her husband and said she knows she won’t be easy to deal with as a council member. “I could not have done this without you,” she said. Councilman Oscar Madrigal said if you are the last one to speak before cake, make it quick. “Congratulations to everyone who was reelected and to the two new council members,” he said. “It is going to be a difficult road, there will be many roadblocks along the way, but together we can accomplish many things. Flynn said the council inspired him and he asked the attendees to applaud their efforts. He pointed out that he had a coffee at Whole Foods two hours earlier and someone asked him how he got involved with politics. “I remember in 1972 I was 13 years old and I was playing baseball on the street, and my dad came out of the house, and he was walking across the street to the car, and I said “Where are you going, dad” and he said he was going to file,” he said. “That began our family’s commitment to public service.” Flynn thanked the people who supported him, but also thanked his mom and dad, John and Diane Flynn. “My parents were front and center in this last election and every election I have been involved with,” he said. “I started with my dad walking door-to-door, and that too has become an addition.” SODOKU SOLUTION

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. HEALTH Regulators: Pot Deliveries Can Be Made Throughout California By Paul Elias
Alternative to EpiPen to Hit Market at Generic Prices By Linda A. Johnson TRENTON, N.J. (AP)— Generic drugmaker Sandoz announced plans Thursday to start selling an alternative to the EpiPen in the U.S. early next year. The EpiPen injector is used to halt life-threatening allergic reactions to insect bites, nuts and other foods. Brand-name EpiPen, which dominates the market, has been in short supply since spring because of production problems. Sandoz will sell prefilled syringes

with the same medicine, the hormone epinephrine, under the name Symjepi. The price will be $250 for two, without insurance. Two generic versions of EpiPen are sold in the U.S. for $300 a pair, including one from EpiPen seller Mylan. The company started selling its own generic after it was blasted for repeated hikes that pushed up its list price from $94 to $608 for a pair of brand-name EpiPens. What people pay varies, though, depending on insurance, discounts and the pharmacy. Mylan's injectors are made by a subsidiary of Pfizer, which is
upgrading factories to fix quality problems. That resulted in production slowdowns. Pfizer said Thursday it's shipping some injectors and expects to ship more in the coming months. The shortages triggered temporary shortages of alternative products. As a result, U.S. regulators let some manufacturers extend expiration dates. Sandoz, part of Novartis AG, will sell syringes with an adult dose made by Adamis Pharmaceuticals Corp. A children's version will follow. Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries began selling limited quantities of its new generic EpiPen in the U.S. last week.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP)— California regulators on Friday said marijuana deliveries can be made anywhere in the state, even in locales that ban cannabis. Law enforcement groups and the California League of Cities opposed the move, arguing that pot deliveries to places that ban cannabis erodes local government control and will increase crime in those areas. The matter has been one of the most debated issues as state regulators hammer out permanent rules for how marijuana is grown, tested, packaged and delivered. Recreational marijuana became legal in the state after voters passed Proposition 64 two years ago. The dispute could end up in court. The delivery issue was included in regulations drafted by the Bureau of Cannabis Control, which issues most retail permits. The proposal also included a ban on permit holders partnering with unlicensed operators, which industry supporters said will stifle growth. The bureau in its comments explaining the added rule said it's concerned about such partnerships
doing business in the black market. California Cannabis Industry Association spokesman Josh Drayton said most California cities and counties have exerted local control and don't allow marijuana, making it impossible for a business such as a beverage maker or nutritional supplement manufacturer to partner with a legal marijuana operator. He said the bureau's stand against unlicensed operators went too far and will hurt the nascent industry. “The industry has slowed down enough already without this added hurdle,” Drayton said. The California Department of Food and Agriculture, which regulates farmers, also released its draft regulations which would continue to allow farmers to receive an unlimited number of permits to grow pot.
Climate Reality Check: Global Carbon Pollution Up in 2018 By Seth Borenstein
They were published in three scientific journals Wednesday. The new figures were announced as government leaders meet in Poland to negotiate how to put the 2015 Paris climate accord into effect. Scientists say the estimate puts some of the landmark agreement's goals nearly out of reach. The studies say this year the world is spewing 40.9 billion tons (37.1 billion metric tons) of carbon dioxide. Global Carbon Project chairman Rob Jackson calls it discouraging.
WASHINGTON (AP)— Scientists calculate that global emissions of heat-trapping carbon dioxide saw their largest rise in seven years. Projections show world carbon dioxide emissions increased 2.7 percent from 2017 to 2018, following several years of little growth. The calculations are from the Global Carbon Project, an international scientific collaboration of academics, governments and industry that tracks greenhouse gas emissions.
Federal Protections for Air, Land and Water Are Disappearing
WASHINGTON (AP)—One after another, landmark U.S. protections for climate, air and land are in the crosshairs of the Trump administration as his agency leaders move past early fumbles and scandals to start delivering on a succession of promised environmental rollbacks. On Thursday, the Interior Department proposed easing rules on oil and gas drilling for millions of acres of range in the West. And as soon as next week, the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to unveil its proposed rewrite of a major 2015 Obama rule that extended federal protections to thousands of waterways and wetlands. Supporters and opponents expect the overhaul of the national water rule could go even further, also changing aspects of how the U.S. enforces the 1972 Clean Water Act, one of the country's foundation environmental measures. Environmental groups say the rewrite could lift federal protections for millions of miles of streams and wetlands in the lower 48 states. The broad outline of the administration water rule to emerge so far points to “an unprecedented rollback of Clean Water Act protections,” said Jan GoldmanCarter, senior director of wetlands and water resources at the National Wildlife Federation. The pending water rule changes and other major rollbacks already announced give big wins to energy companies, farmers, builders and others who've fought for decades against environmental rules they see
around the country on the pending water proposal. “It was about power - power in the hands of the federal government over farmers, developers, and landowners,” the unreleased administration statement says. The administration is acting to grant other prayers of businesspeople who think U.S. environmental laws

aimed at stalling or stopping projects until developers give up. “This is what's being done in the country to stifle...progress. President Trump is very aware of this,” said Myron Ebell, a director at the Washington-based Conservative Enterprise Institute who led President Donald Trump's environmental transition team. Maybe crucially, this month's complex overhauls of major environmental rules are associated mainly not with the high-profile political figures that Trump appointed as Cabinet heads for Interior and Environment, but with both men's deputies, who are Washington veterans and technocrats. A set of White House talking points for the proposed new water rule obtained by the Associated
Press says the Trump administration would remove federal protections for waterways including isolated wetlands and ponds and creeks that run only after rain or snowmelt, among others. Up to 60 percent of the stream miles in the continental U.S., not counting Alaska, and more than half of the wetlands appear to potentially be affected, Goldman-Carter, with the National Wildlife Federation, said. The overhaul, commanded by Trump in a 2017 executive order, deals with what kinds of waterways fall under protection of the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Environmental groups say more than a half-century of federal preservation of even remote, unloved
and at times bone-dry creeks and wetlands has helped protect major downstream lakes and rivers from upstream pollutants, fertilizer runoffs and oil spills, helped clean up big water bodies including the Chesapeake Bay, and helped buffer humans against droughts, floods and hurricanes. Many farmers, miners, builders and others loathe the federal protections for remote creeks and seasonally dry frog ponds, seeing the water protections as unjustified federal barricades to plowing or building on their own private property. “The previous administration's 2015 rule wasn't about water quality,” the White House's talking points say, making an argument that the EPA's Wheeler has echoed in meetings
Environmental groups say more than a halfcentury of federal preservation of even remote, unloved and at times bone-dry creeks and … helped buffer humans against droughts, floods and hurricanes. go too far. Last week, the administration moved to further open up for oil and gas drilling 9 million Western acres that conservationists are vital for native species, including an imperiled bird. Other rollbacks late this summer targeted what had been legacy Obama efforts to combat climate change by reducing coal, oil and gas emissions from the nation's electrical grid and passenger vehicles.

Women Dominate Top Categories of Grammy Noms By Staff Reports LOS ANGELES— Rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake topped a wide-ranging list of Grammy nominees announced today, but female artists—particularly Brandi Carlile—made a strong showing in the newly expanded top categories of album, record and song of the year. Lamar, Drake and Carlile all scored nominations in each of the top three Grammy categories, which were expanded this year from five to eight nominees in an effort to bolster diversity. The Recording Academy has come under fire in recent years over lack female representation in the top categories. This year, however, women nabbed five of the eight nominations for album of the year and are strongly represented in the other top categories, including six female acts nominated for best new artist. Lamar scored eight Grammy nods, led by his album of the year nomination for the “Black Panther: The Album” film soundtrack. Drake landed in the category for “Scorpion,” while Carlile's “By the Way, I Forgive You” earned her a nod. Also nominated for top album were H.E.R. for her selftitled release, Post Malone for “Beerbongs & Bentleys,” Cardi B for Invasion of Privacy,” Janelle Monae for “Dirty Computer” and Kacey Musgraves for “Golden Hour.” For record of the year, an honor presented to the performer, Drake earned one of his seven nominations for “God's Plan,” while Carlile was nominated for “The Joke” and Lamar earned a nod for his collaboration with SZA,

“All the Stars.” Rounding out the category were Cardi B, Bad Bunny and J Balvin for “I Like It,” Childish Gambino for “This is America,” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper for “Shallow,” Post Malone and 21 Savage for “Rockstar” and Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey for “The Middle.” Song of the year nominations, which recognized songwriters, included Lamar's “All the Stars,” Drake's “God's Plan,” Carlile's “The Joke,” Ella Mai's “Boo'd Up,” Shawn Mendes' “In My Blood” and Childish Gambino's “This is America.” Also nominated were “Shallow,” the Lady GagaBradley Cooper tune from the movie “A Star is Born,” and “The Middle,” the hit from Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey. Women dominated the best new artist category, with nominations going to Chloe X Halle, Greta Van Fleet, H.E.R., Dua Lipa, Margo Price, Bebe
This year … women nabbed five of the eight nominations for album of the year and are strongly represented in the other top categories. Rexha, Jorja Smith and Luke Combs. The expansion of top Grammy categories was announced in July, with Recording Academy President Neil Portnow saying the move “creates more opportunities for a wider range of recognition in these important categories and gives more flexibility to our voters when having to make the often-challenging
decisions about representing excellence and the best in music for the year.” The change came on the heels of a USC report released in January that found only 9.3 percent of nominees in the top Grammy categories were women over the past five years. Portnow also came under fire when, after being questioned about a lack of female representation among nominees, he responded that women need to “step up” to be recognized. Portnow has announced that he will step down next year at the end of his term. The Grammys recognize recordings released between Oct. 1, 2017, and Sept. 30, 2018. The 61st Grammy Awards will be held at Feb. 10 Staples Center following a one-year move of the ceremony back to New York City in honor of the show's 60th anniversary.
Hart Steps Down as Oscars Host Over Past Anti-Gay Tweets By Jake Coyle NEW YORK (AP)—Just two days after being named host of the Academy Awards, Kevin Hart stepped down following an outcry over past homophobic tweets by the comedian. Capping a swift and dramatic fallout, Hart wrote on Twitter just after midnight Friday that he was withdrawing as Oscars host because he didn't want to be a distraction. “I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past,” wrote Hart. Hart, who is in Australia for a comedy tour, also tweeted Friday morning: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King, Jr.” Earlier Thursday evening, the comedian had refused to apologize for tweets that resurfaced after he was announced as Oscars host
on Tuesday. In a video on Instagram, Hart said the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences gave him an ultimatum: apologize or “we're going to have to move on and find another host.” “I chose to pass on the apology,” Hart said. “The reason why I passed is because I've addressed this several times.” The film academy didn't respond to messages Thursday evening. Hart has since deleted some of the anti-gay tweets, mostly dated from 2009-2011. But
they had already been screencaptured and been shared online. In 2011, he wrote in a since-deleted tweet: “Yo if my son comes home & try's 2 play with my daughter’s doll house I'm going 2 break it over his head & say n my voice ‘stop that's gay.”' In an earlier post Thursday, Hart wrote on Instagram that critics should “stop being negative” about his earlier anti-gay remarks. “I'm almost 40 years old. If you don't believe that people change, grow, evolve? I don't know what to tell you,” said
Hart, who added, in all-caps: “I love everybody.” Hart's attitudes about homosexuality were also a well-known part of his standup act. In the 2010 special “Seriously Funny,” he said “one of my biggest fears is my son growing up and being gay.” “Keep in mind, I'm not homophobic, I have nothing against gay people, do what you want to do, but me, being a heterosexual male, if I can prevent my son from being gay, I will,” Hart said. GLAAD, the advocacy group for LGBTQ rights, said Thursday that it reached out to Oscars broadcaster ABC, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, and Hart's management to “discuss Kevin's anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and record.” Comedian and actor Billy Eichner said “a simple, authentic apology showing any bit of understanding or remorse would have been so simple.” The film academy moved up this year's ceremony to Feb. 24, giving producers little time to find a replacement.
LOS ANGELES (AP)—To say Andy Serkis has been through the wringer with his adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's “The Jungle Book” is a bit of an understatement. It was always going to be an ambitious project for a first time director—dark, intense and more in the spirit of Kipling's stories, with a big studio (Warner Bros.) behind it, a blockbuster budget, A-list talent to match, from Christian Bale to Cate Blanchett, and all the high-pressure stakes that go along with that. But five years ago when he signed up to direct, Serkis didn't know that Walt Disney Studios would soon be announcing its own live-action Jungle Book, which would beat his to theaters by over two years and become a nearly billion dollar box-office sensation. And no one would have guessed that at the 11th-hour this summer, after promotions had already begun, his own studio would sell his version to Netflix. “This wasn't the easiest ride for anybody,” Serkis said on a recent afternoon. “It really did go through a massively long journey.” Serkis was even able to direct another movie ("Breathe”) and star in at least one ("War for the Planet of the Apes”) during the post production for “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” which debuted on the streaming service Friday. The affable Serkis, kind and soft-spoken, who made his name as a pioneering talent in motion capture performance in “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit” and “The Planet of the Apes” films, is just excited people are finally going to get to see his passion project. The Callie Kloves-written screenplay takes the Mowgli myth away from the sunny, toe-tapping Disney versions, and back to Kipling's original vision of the boy raised by wolves. Actor Rohan Chand ("Lone Survivor”) was brought on to lead the film at age 10 (he's now 14), opposite heavyweight actors like Bale, who plays Bagheera, Blanchett as Kaa, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Naomie Harris as Nisha and Serkis himself as Baloo. “I actually grew up reading Rudyard Kipling short stories,” Chand said. “I love Mowgli. He was almost like my hero in a way.” In order to see through Serkis's grand vision, Chand had to essentially shoot the film twice. First with the “A” talent like Bale and Cumberbatch, wearing motion capture tech on their faces and arms, and then again on location with a different set of actors mimicking the movements of the jungle animals. “Rohan was extraordinary,” Serkis said of his young star who he helped guide through some intense scenes, emotionally and physically. “He had to endure real physical pain and a lot of technical challenges which he did with great ease.” For parents wondering whether or not their young ones should watch, Serkis said it depends on you as a parent. The Motion Picture Association of America gave it a PG13 rating. “There is nothing in it that is gratuitous. There is no violence that is gratuitous. It is the lore of the jungle and there is violence and there is animal violence but it is not overly gory and it's not enjoying it in a salacious way. It's truthful storytelling and totally represents the level of darkness that's in the book,” Serkis said. “It's an emotional story, it's an intense story. That's what separates it from other versions.” Serkis was deep into planning when Disney's version was announced, and, although he knew the films would be quite different, there was still pressure to be first. Once that “went away” when Disney beat them to theaters, Serkis said, they decided to take the time they needed to refine the story and get the performances and the technology right. Serkis had imagined a premiere at a major festival, Cannes or Venice, and a big international theatrical run. And then he started to see the silver lining in making his film immediately available to 117 million Netflix subscribers in 190 countries worldwide. It's also playing in select theaters too. “This could actually be the best thing for the film. It was not a straight up, four-quadrant, popcorn blockbuster movie,” Serkis said. “Netflix has a huge global reach...That it will be available to the rest of the world immediately is by far the best thing for the film to be seen by people.” And as for his new partners? “They've been incredible,” he said. “They want it to be seen.”
