Oxnard-- Channel Islands Harbor was a winter wonderland, Dec. 8, as the harbor imported 36 tons of snow for the kids and featured free pictures with Santa Claus himself.

IDS were decked out in winter gear for the event, which included climbing to the top of the snow mountain and then sliding back down on their snow disc saucers. Of course, there were lots of snowball fights that pitted parents against children. Larry Warner and his son Hunter has lived in Ventura County their whole lives and enjoy the snow but going to where it falls is a mission. “When I heard there was going to be snow here, Hunter got all excited, and I couldn’t say no,” he said. “A lot of kids showed up with different kinds of sleds, and they are letting all the kids play with them.”

Santa’s Sleigh Boat was a crowd favorite at the Parade of Lights.

Parade of Lights shine across the harbor By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The Channel Islands Harbor Parade of Lights was a festive event that brought out a giant crowd to South Oxnard, Dec. 8. The parade was full of partying and massive crowds at the shore, as people cheered on the event and enjoyed a warm and festive evening. Boats decked out in holiday specialties paraded across the harbor, as Santa Claus decked out in his holiday sleigh boat brought a massive cheer from the shore. Craig Sholes and his wife Maricela brought their grandsons Owen and Layton Anderson to the parade, and the two kids had decorative, festive balloons that lit up. The couple just moved to Oxnard earlier this year. “We’re at “The Colony at Mandalay Beach,” and we wanted to see the parade,” Craig said. “Now we are neighbors of the area.” The couple said they waited to arrive because they didn’t want the kids to be outside too long. “Obviously, it’s a pretty mobbed event n Parade, see page 3

Oxnard City Council expands to seven members By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard - It’s a new day for the Oxnard City Council, Dec. 11, as the group has expanded from five to seven members. This brought a packed house for the swearingin ceremony, followed by council comments and a reception. City Clerk Michelle Ascencion read the canvassing of the results and was congratulated during comments by Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez for guiding the city through two elections in 2018. “Incumbents Tim Flynn, Carmen Ramirez, and Bert Perello were reelected to another term and will soon be joined by our two new council members-elect, Gabriela Basua and Vianey Lopez,” Ascencion said. “Mayor Flynn’s term will be two years, which is the full term for mayor, council members Perello, Ramirez and Basua will serve full four-year terms for districts one, two and five respectively, and council

member Lopez’s term for district six will be for two years, and the seat will be up for re-election to a full fouryear term in 2020.” Ascencion said the city’s proposed cannabis business tax and three measures related to the Seabridge community passed easily. “There were 42,656 ballots cast in this election which represents a

turnout of approximately 57 percent of registered voters in the City of Oxnard,” she said. “Nearly two-thirds of those ballots, approximately 62 percent, were cast on vote-by-mail ballots.” After the oath of office, the council members spoke, starting with Lopez who said it is an honor to be sworn in as the first representative in district six.

“I don’t think my family ever imagined when we first arrived in this country that we would be here and so involved in our political process and what this country is all about,” she said. “I want to thank them and acknowledge them more than anyone for their support from day one when I first ran for school board. From the moment that I shared with

them that I would be running for city council, there was no doubt in their minds that we could do this and it was thanks to them that I am here today.” She said the city faces many challenges they are both aware and unaware of, both now and in the future. n City Council, see page 6
