Children’s Librarian Vanesa Chua said the party is fulfilling because it brings community and family together and provides a
safe and learning experience for all ages. “Making the kids happy and celebrating the holidays is my inspiration,” she said. “I am so happy that Santa was able to come down from the North Pole.” She loves seeing the look on the kids’ faces when Santa arrives. “Some of the kids can’t afford programs like this,” she said. “Here we offer programs for free,

Santa at the Station brings Oxnard together
By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— Music, dancing, games, snowball fights and sledding highlighted the Annual Oxnard Police Department’s Santa at the Station celebration, Dec. 15. The gang enjoyed a lot of holiday cheer while listening to the beats of DJ G-Cut who kept the station parking lot jumping, while others
enjoyed playing cornhole and Jenga on a chilly December day. Police Chief Scott Whitney said the party was canceled in 2017 because of the Thomas Fire, but there are approximately 1,000 kids with wristbands so that they can try out the snow. “That’s awesome,” he said. “We’ve got Santa here, arts and crafts and its been a great day. “It’s n Station, see page 3

The temporary homeless shelter will not happen until the city hires staff and that situation has fueled concerns about budget cuts. Clinicas Health Center Manager Patty Andrade brought up the item during public comments at the Dec. 18, meeting and said she runs the office at the corner of Meta and Seventh streets. “We order our craft supplies and snacks from different sources,” she said. Rose Marie Kerner brought her three great-grandchildren to the party and loved how the library gives back to the community. “I love the variety,” she said. “The crafts, the joy, the storytelling, and all the helpful elves,”. “It’s all good because the children can open up anywhere they want freedom and enjoy it.” She said her great-grandson Joseph Lopez has a one-track mind. “He’s going to eat all the cookies,” Kerner said. Grandma Margret Gillen brought her grandson Dylan and his mom Julie to the party. “He (Dylan) is only 10 months old, but his sister is three years old,” Gillen said. Julie said the family comes to the library every week for story time and they couldn’t wait to see Santa. “We love the library, so we are introducing the kids to the library, and we are trying to read a lot of books,” she said. “Dylan is too young to read, but we get him a lot of picture books anyway. My daughter loves Barbie, but she is also getting a bunch of books.”
NEWS Jairo Perez arrested by the OPD On Dec. 11, 2018, at approximately 1:05 p.m., officers located a stolen Kia Sedona van in the 400 block of East Pleasant Valley Road. The driver, Jairo Perez, 32 years old, was contacted and arrested for vehicle theft and receiving stolen property. Perez’s criminal history shows that he has been arrested for numerous narcotics violations and thefts. The Oxnard Police Department Auto Theft Task Force was created to address stolen vehicle issues within the City of Oxnard. The Oxnard Police Department wants to remind citizens to park and lock their vehicles in well-lit areas and to use anti-theft devices to help secure their vehicles. OPD offers safety tips to deter vehicle theft In the spirit of Informing, Educating and Empowering our community, the Oxnard Police Department (OPD) would like to remind the residents of Oxnard of a continuing crime trend citywide. The Oxnard Police Department has had over 750 vehicles reported stolen over the past year (overwhelmingly 1990’s Honda sedans) which is a 9.2 percent increase from 2017. These thefts are not a new or isolated trend. According to NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), nationwide, the top two vehicles listed on the “Vehicles Most Likely to be Stolen” are Honda Accords and Civics. The Oxnard Police Department is still diligently working to solve the issue. Among OPD’s efforts to lower the instances of vehicle theft are: An informational campaign to educate would-be victims on how to prevent vehicle theft; Educational Public Safety Videos; A #NotThisCar Campaign that sees detectives locating owners of 1990’s Hondas and providing them with steering wheel locks; and An enforcement campaign to target known car thieves and put them on notice that OPD is watching! Crime prevention is YOUR responsibility, and it starts at home. Next time you walk away from your idling vehicle, in your driveway or on the street, turn around and turn it off. If you see your neighbor running inside with their doors open or unlocked, keep an eye out or let them know. If you see a suspicious person checking door handles to a vehicle that is not theirs, report it! Let’s let criminals know #NotThisCarOxnard! The Oxnard Police Department has been focused on extensive public engagement and community outreach, encouraging residents to be “Partners in Public Safety.” Residents are reminded and encouraged to report any suspicious activity to police and can do so anonymously, with translators available 24 hours a day. Anyone with information regarding criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Oxnard Police Department at 805-385-7740 or the Ventura County Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 and www. venturacountycrimestoppers. org. Makers Market offers diverse and unique gifts By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— Christmas shoppers filled the streets at “The Collection at River Park” Dec. 16, as the Makers Market offered great buys and terrific gift ideas for people facing the holiday doldrums. Vendors filled the streets with crafts, custom clothes and unique treasures that highlighted the day for holiday shoppers. The event was possible because of Lisa Green from LMG Vendor Events and Blissful Boutiques, who started with an outdoor market in front of her home. “I was hosting holiday boutiques and thought wow, this could be something," she said. "Let the artisans have a place to display their goods and not pay the high rents for a storefront. I’ve been doing a market for the last 18 months in Santa Barbara, and it gives back to the community, and it lets the people who are shopping, the consumers, talk to the people who make the goods, and they can touch and feel it.” Green loves watching the customers shop and seeing all the vendors making money. “The best thing is when people come up to me at the end of the day and give me a hug and say they were successful,” she said. Her husband, Bryant Green, is Lisa’s number one supporter and said the enterprise is 50/50 teamwork. “I always get up and look at all the different unique vendors and see what’s intriguing to pick up,” he said. “I’m wearing one of the vendor’s jewelry right now, so the temptation is always there to shop at some of these great vendors.”

Makers Market at “The Collection” had big crowds stocking up on holiday gifts.
Lisa said she is the vendor’s biggest supporter. “I love contributing to them, so I often buy from them,” she said. Jean Nietsch from Luna Glass Works had unique fused glass jewelry for sale that is her distinctive designs. "NASA originally designed "Dactylic glass and they used it in their landing gear because it reflects the light out,” she said. “At some point in time, someone decided to get creative with it and here we are.” She loves the venue and pointed out that in the midst of all the massproduced items, the Makers Market offers one-of-a-kind items for the holidays. “They are made with love and hopefully passed on with love,” she said. “I get ideas and see things like this piece, which was inspired by the handle of her grandmother’s and mirror. Sometimes I see things in my meditations, and you never know. Every once in a while, you see
something and say oh, I can work with that.” Emily Ferree owns “LittleRudders” and was selling mostly watercolor designs but also had lettering and typography for sale. “I want to showcase that art can be powerful and can be something more than pretty and bring encouragement in life,” she said. “I started (doing art) a few years back. I started dancing with the dance ministry a few years back, and our teacher started talking about God and how to do that through artwork and wanted to make art that speaks and encourages people.” She loves talking to all the shoppers and hearing about their lives. “It’s awesome to be out here with the people of Oxnard,” she said. Her husband Kevin likes to offer Emily suggestions. “Sometimes they are good ones, and other times, I am like maybe I shouldn’t give any suggestions,”
he said. “She has a good eye for everything she does, and I trust her tremendously.” Esteban Casas wanted to pick something up for a co-worker at his Christmas party and loved the items Ferree had on sale. “I saw these stickers here, and they are very artsy and unique, so I thought that many people would appreciate a sticker like that,” Casa said. “The market has an eclectic and unique vibe to it, and we don’t see a lot of handwritten and hand-painted notebooks and stickers.” He is enjoying the holiday season. “I am here with my family, and we are enjoying the last bit of our Sunday,” he said. “We had brunch here, and we are walking around.” For your furry friends, Josefina Cantu owns JC Dog Accessories and had lots of options available for pets. “You’ve got to give people options,” she said. “I’m working on football teams, and you never realize how many there are until you have to buy them.” Josefina loves dogs and volunteers at her local animal shelter. “I like giving back to the ones who don’t have a voice,” she said. “My Christmas bow ties have been the most popular item today because I am out.” People who want a clothing item, she said, like to buy bow ties. “They attach to the collar or harness of the animal, so they are not foreign,” she said. “I have the Velcro on the softer side near the skin, so it’s not too bad at all.” She loves meeting all the people and hearing stories about their dogs. “It’s great to connect with people on another level other than social media,” she said.
Santa’s Workshop fills the Oxnard PAL By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— Santa and his helpers were busy at the Oxnard Police Athletic League (PAL) headquarters, Dec. 15, as the group, held its workshop full of fun activities and goodies for girls and boys. The event meant kids received treats, Christmas-themed arts and crafts and a special present from Santa himself, delivered by youngsters who wanted to help. Community Services Manager Terrel Harrison said the event benefits needy kids and the group has busses picking up kids from the south Oxnard area. “We purchased the cookies with donations to the Police Activities

League, and the kids are decorating them,” he said. “Our volunteers are helping.” He said the volunteers are making reindeer, gingerbread people, and reindeer antlers.
“There is a different craft at every table," he said. "There is also games or cookie decorating. It’s good stuff.” Sandra from 3D Auto Detailing of Oxnard said the community
needs to be more involved with each other. “Especially with the kids,” she said. “Some families can’t afford to bring a little toy to them. We are handling the cookies for all the kids coming in today.” She loves seeing how happy all the kids are and the smiles on their faces. “It’s getting a cookie or taking a picture with Santa,” she said. “The icing on the cake is getting a toy.” She said everyone at her table was having a good time. “We’re all enjoying the frosting and the cookies,” she said. 3D Auto Detailing is located at 201 Oxnard Blvd. Harrison said Sandra had a car show for PAL and the proceeds from that event paid for the gifts
the kids received at the workshop. “Instead of an entry fee they gave toys, and they also had people come in and make cash contributions,” he said. “We also did the Dance for a Cause program, and we raised $3,000 to purchase toys. It was a combination of all those things.” Kian Vea loves volunteering and handing out toys with the PAL and making kids feel happy on Christmas. “It’s a time for joy,” he said. “I want everyone to be happy this Christmas.” Chas Cibal was bringing presents to people who can’t afford them and said it’s cool being one of Santa’s helpers. I want something special for Christmas dinner,” he said.

NEWS Council gets gang injunction update Gang members are offered a fresh start By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard— The City of Oxnard Council heard the latest information about the gang injunction, Dec. 18, which invoked passionate, emotional comments from council members and people in the crowd.
The city obtained its first civil gang injunction against the Colonia Chiques gang in June of 2005 and got a second gang injunction against the Southside Chiques gang in October of 2006. A gang injunction declares its members a public nuisance and can address the problem before it reaches a felony level. “We worked closely with the district attorney’s office, and we showed during a 14-day trial in 2005 the largest gang in the City of Oxnard, the one we were getting the injunction against, were responsible for at least 39 homicides in our city,” Police Chief Scott Whitney said. “We showed in court that they were responsible for at least 140 robberies and they are also responsible for attempted murders, aggravated assaults, drug sales, and other crimes.” The city received its second gang injunction in 2006 against the second largest gang in Oxnard, the Southside Chiques, he said, and during that trial, the department proved there were at least 1,000 similar crimes that went along with the first gang injunction. “In addition to the decrease in homicides, our officers and residents saw an immediate decrease in the nuisance type activity gangs are associated with,” he said. “I’m talking about gangs that take over street corners, gangs that control public parks and public restrooms in certain neighborhoods.” Whitney said his officers have been judicious in how they apply for the gang injunction, and they recognize that it has limits on civil liberties, although many people push the department to be more aggressive. “The last thing we want is someone on the gang injunction who doesn’t belong on the gang injunction,” he said. “We think the gang injunctions are an effective tool and a good deterrent, but it’s one tool of many, and we don’t overuse it.” In 2017, he said the police officers in Oxnard made approximately 6,500 arrests and “about” 83 gang injunction arrests, which is a little more than one percent of the total arrests. Assistant Chief Eric Sonstegard said after the July meeting when the council received the last update; they directed the department to go out to the community and get more feedback about how the city felt

Oxnard Police Chief Scott Whitney gave the council the latest update about the gang injunctions .
about the gang injunctions. The three key areas that came up during the feedback process, he said, were how does someone get put on a gang injunction, does an individual get due process in the courts before being placed on the gang injunction and how does the person get off the injunction, or are they on there forever? The department held 14 community meetings and conducted a non-scientific survey, as 95 percent of the people surveyed supported gang injunctions. “Emphasis is based on arrest and involvement in gang-related crimes and admission of gang membership and having gang tattoos, so it’s behavior based,” Sonstegard said. The department has a three-level approval process before serving someone with a gang injunction, he said, as a detective, sergeant and commander must sign off on the action. “On the rare occasion where we are going to serve a gang injunction on a juvenile, it requires a bureau chief ’s approval,” he said. Some of the comments the department has received were that youngsters are being served and are wayward youth Sonstegard cited two examples, including a 37-year-old Chiques Gang Member with a 16-year history of violence in the city. “In the last three years, you can see three different possessions of a loaded firearm, and he is continually out in Oxnard being a major driver of violent crime,” he said. “This individual is in custody, but he will be getting out soon, and he will be served with a gang injunction.” Sonstegard said another example is a 23-year-old member of the Chiques gang who started on that
path in 2010 when he was found to be in possession of a firearm. “Time-after-time, he was arrested fleeing from officers with a loaded handgun, and it continues,” he said. “Police officers recently contacted this individual as a passenger in a vehicle full of Colonia Gang Members, and at the end of the pursuit a handgun was recovered in the car.” Thirdly, Sonstegard showed a 25-year-old Chiques Gang Member and one of his first contacts with the police was when he was firing a gun at rival gang members. Police arrested him with a loaded handgun. The department, after lots of feedback from the public and District Attorney’s office, decided it would be best to conduct judicial rather than administrative hearings to get someone off a gang injunction list. “This is a testament in getting community feedback,” he said. “We were going to do one thing, we heard the feedback, and now we are going to do something else. Moving forward, no individual will be subject to the gang injunction without a judicial hearing.” To get off a gang injunction, he said they can file a court motion. The District Attorney’s office can file a court motion, or an individual can make a written request to the Oxnard Police Department. “We’ve committed to an annual review of everyone’s file, so on an annual basis a gang investigator will review an individual’s history and see if he should still be subject to the gang injunction,” he said. The District Attorney's office will seek an amended injunction against the Colonia and Southside Chiques Street gangs, Sonstegard said, and the current injunctions
are still valid. “The newly amended injunction will include the judicial process as well as the new opt-out provision,” he said. “The Oxnard Police Department is going to send letters to all the individuals previously served with the two gang injunctions and those letters are going to tell them that we are going to vacate the injunctions for them and the prohibitions no longer bind them. There is going to be about 360 individuals who are going to get a fresh start.” If the gang member continues to act with gang activities, he said that person would be served with a new order. During public comments, Armando Vasquez said he respects the police but disagrees with them about gang injunctions, and the only reason why they are at the meeting is the unconstitutional nature of the gang injunctions. “These guys (the police) are running scared, and the district attorney is without a client if you guys say no more,” he said. “This is a racist policy. It is played on the backs of Latinos and nobody else. It’s been going on for 15 years. It’s been hate-mongering at its best.” He said the police told him they are going to “free up 360 bad guys” and serve 24 guys through an administrative hearing that we were going to have to pay for but then they figured they couldn’t do it.” The first time the city serves a new enjoined young man, he said the city would end up in court. “It will cost you,” Vasquez said. Marissa Martinez opened her comments by showing everyone a picture of her son, 19-yearold Vincent Martinez who was murdered in front of her house and she thinks the gang injunction needs to continue. “Where I live in south Oxnard it is more violent,” she said. “I just installed a Ring doorbell, so I can see because there have been stolen items from my home. I am a true Chicana; my parents came from Mexico.” Oxnard Peace Officers Association President Mike Johnson said he respects Marissa Martinez for speaking because most residents are afraid. “We can’t get 90 percent of the people in this city to agree on anything,” he said. “I’ve personally seen how well it works in curbing gang violence as a resident and a policeman.” He said the rhetoric against the gang injunctions doesn’t hold water. “There have been accusations that it’s racist and that is factually incorrect,” he said. “When you look at the people served with the gang injunctions, there are Hispanic people, white people, black people and members of various races.” Council member Vianey Lopez said public safety is primary in the city. n Gang members, see page 6

a great way for the police department to connect with the community, especially the young kids.” The group was enjoying the Macarena, but he planned to resist the urge to get out there. “They told me I shouldn’t be dancing,” he said. “Tresierras Supermarkets, Platinum Towing, Walmart, DJ G-Cut, and 5150 Clothing always donate snacks, Conrad Alvarez always donates and we’re still looking for sponsors for the snow.” Whitney said many parents told him the kids have never been in the snow before and they loved it. Community Affairs Manager Melissa Valdez was in the spirit and dressed in a new holiday sweater. “I got it at Francesca’s at The Collection,” she said. Whitney said everyone dressed in holiday outfits at the celebration is Oxnard Police Department employees. “They’re coming in on their own time, and it’s cool to see,” he said. “All the young people dressed in grey are the Oxnard Police Explorers, and they are here on their own time.” Oxnard Police Explorers Captain Diego Ruizbalsco said his crew is helping the kids go down the snow hill and making sure the event is a success. “It’s nice to have the community here together and have the explorers here helping,” he said. “I’m having a lot of fun here today.” Assistant Chief Eric Sonstegard tried his luck at going down the hill on a snow disc and said the celebration is a blast. “Next time we are going to have twice as much snow and some of these kids, this may be the first time they ever got to play in the snow,” he said. “It’s fantastic and a great opportunity for the officers to interact with the kids.” He just had a birthday and admitted that he needed help getting up. “I used to sled as a kid, but I’m not so young anymore,” he said. Valdez took a snow disc downhill and said it was a great time. “The kids keep going back in line,” she laughed. “The cool thing is that so many kids told us they have never seen snow before, so it’s cool to be able to bring it to them, even if it’s for one day.” Cristiano Lopez stayed away from the snow hill but enjoyed playing Jenga. “I am having a good time, Mom Rocio Lopez said. “I am not going to go down the snow hill, but my child will.” Roberta (DJ G-Cut) enjoys helping out with the police and loves being a positive role model. “I do this for the kids,” she said. “This brings everyone into the Christmas spirit. I picked out all the music, and I am playing this all off the cuff. I look at the crowd and make sure everyone is into this. The majority of people here are Latinos, so I put some holiday music on just for them, and they love it.” Nellie Estrada was dancing with Officer Luis McArthur of the Oxnard Police Department and got dipped a couple of times. “I don’t know how to dance, but oh my goodness, Officer McArthur is a good dancer,” she said. “I love being out here with the community. That’s the purpose of doing this.”
Chaos at the Dais
Stein loses his temper during public comments By Chris Frost chris@tricountysentry.com Oxnard - Public comments on items during the consent agenda at the Dec. 18, Oxnard City Council meeting got heated, as Oxnard resident, Larry Stein told the council that public safety is asking for more money repeatedly and other departments are not getting their fair share. He said that according to the ordinances passed in 2018, each district is supposed to get a fair share of public safety funds dedicated to
duties and support for the police and fire departments. “The police department refuses, based on the communication I received from the assistant police chief, to allocate their fair share of resources to each district and show the allocation in a public format,” he said. “They’re mixing and matching their beat systems in what is supposed to be centralized districts for each council district.” In Sept. Stein said Chief Scott Whitney told him the city had 240 patrol officers and other police officers told him that it is an incorrect
statement. “Who am I supposed to believe, the police chief or other members of the police department,” he asked. “If we have 240 police officers, then each neighborhood should have at least 30 police officers allocated to that district, still leaving staff leftover for other police services. When I call for a police officer to respond in my neighborhood, I cannot get an officer to respond in a timely fashion.” He said there are donut holes in his neighborhood from cars going around in circles and people are “blowing through intersections at
30 miles per hour," and police do not respond in a timely fashion. “We have commercial vehicles running in a non-commercial area, and the police department refuses, but here again, the police department is asking for more money while other departments are not getting their fair share,” he said. Stein pointed out to Flynn that the police and fire departments have received over $7 million worth of new vehicles during his tenure. “Where is the equity that is supposed to be taking place for our balanced budgets,” he
said. “We had a general fund budget that spent $112 million just two years ago, and now we’re at $132 million. Where is the $20 million going? It’s not going to the public parks.” At that point, Flynn stopped Stein, but he persisted and said the item is on the agenda and he has the right to speak about it. Flynn did not get the opportunity to tell Stein why he stopped him. “I am speaking about an item on the agenda,” Stein yelled over Flynn. Flynn gaveled him to order, and Stein walked out.

OPED My Little Dear, It’s Not Warm Outside! Dr. James L. Snyder Once again, it is the Christmas season, which means I have to put up with people offended by everything, particularly that pertains to Christmas. When I was young, we had a little saying, “Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never hurt you.” And as far as I understand, we stood by that saying. Most people today have never heard that saying and maybe somebody ought to educate them on some of the realities of life. If words are hurting you, something is wrong with “you.” Everybody is offended by something. I am offended by people who are offended by things I say, which makes no sense whatsoever to me. Where people got this offenditis disease is beyond me. I wonder if there is any cure for this kind of disease? I was in the restaurant the other day and behind me, a person sneezed. Instinctively, I turned around and said, “God bless you.” Of course, I was not ready for the reply when the man said to me, “I’m an atheist don’t you dare use that word ‘God’ around me.” I am a gentleman otherwise I might have been tempted to say something like, “Well, then, God curse you.” Thankfully, I did not say anything like that. I wonder if unspoken thoughts really matter along this line? What puzzles me is why somebody who does not believe in God is offended by the word “ G O D .” The fact that he was offended by that word tells me that somewhere deep inside of him he believes there is a
God. Otherwise, it would never have offended him. If I was an atheist and someone said to me “God bless you,” I would laugh it off because I do not believe in God. To be offended by something you do not believe has to be the epitome of stupidity. Another offensive phrase is, “Merry Christmas.” I happened to mention this to a person I was passing in the store and they looked at me kind of Scrooge-like and said, “Don’t you dare wish me a Merry Christmas.” I would like to know why two words like “Merry Christmas” are offensive to anyone? Being an amateur wordsmith, I like to research words and try to find out their original meaning. There is no way I have found that the two words “Merry” and “Christmas” have anything whatsoever
offensive to them. Those offended by those two words have a chimney that is not smoking. If you are offended by those two words, maybe you should consider the fact that I may be offended by you being offended by those words. What offends one person does not make any sense to someone else. This is America so keep your offending attitude to yourself. Just the other day I was going into a store and there was a lady behind me, so as a gentleman, I opened the door for her and said, “Ladies first.” I would have a hard time understanding the offensiveness of those two words. The lady looked at me and said, “That is the most sexist thing I have heard all day.” I have been trying to find out what is sexist about those two words.
I am either homophobic (whatever that means), racist or sexist. I do not know if I am all of these things at different times or what. I never know if I am one of these until somebody tells me I am one. There are Christmas songs that we cannot play on the radio anymore, movies that we cannot watch at Christmas time, decorations that we cannot put outside our home anymore. I heard recently that the song, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” is offensive to some people. I have listened to that for years and cannot figure out the offensive side of that song. What’s crazy to me are those offended by that song are completely okay with some female singer getting on stage barely clothed, singing a depravity soaked song with lustful lyrics you can’t use in public. Why is that okay and not sexist, but when I open a door for a lady and say, “Ladies First,” that is sexist? Some people refer to this as the war on Christmas. If that is true, I believe those people are losing that war. No
matter what anybody says or thinks I still will celebrate Christmas, wish people “Merry Christmas” and say, “God bless you” when somebody sneezes and open a door for the ladies. If those things offend people, I am happy and most delighted to keep doing them. For years now, there has been a war on Christmas, but it seems that Christmas comes every year at the same time. Isn't that simply amazing? No matter what people say or how offended they are by it, Christmas still comes. I could think of quite a few things that would offend me. However, I have a thick skin and a tender heart. My life is not depended upon somebody being offended. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is in the book of Proverbs. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). I refuse to let people who are offended by everything direct my path. My trust is not in man, but rather “in the Lord.” Rev. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship. He lives with the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage in Ocala. OPED Will a New Consumer Bureau Director Heed the Agency’s Mission? By Charlene Crowell In her first news conference as a Senate-confirmed Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Kathleen Kraninger’s remarks sounded a lot like Mick Mulvaney, her former boss at the Office of Budget and Management (OMB). On December 11, just one day into a five-year term of office, Kraninger told reporters she would continue the business-friendly work begun by Mulvaney. Days earlier on December 6, Kraninger was confirmed to the position by a 50-49 party line vote. However, a broad and diverse coalition comprised of national and state organizations have pledged to valiantly stand up for consumers and their financial rights. Labor advocates like the AFLCIO and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), as well as civil rights stalwarts NAACP, Unidos US (formerly the National Council of LaRaza) and the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and consumer advocates like Americans for Financial Reform and Center for Responsible Lending are all among the advocates lending their names and influence on the effort. “She won’t answer questions. She won’t release documents. She let industry attend her swearing in but not the public. Now she’s forcing important members of the media out of the room during her first press availability as CFPB director. What is Kathy Kraninger hiding,” asked Karl Frisch, executive director of Allied Progress. “This is not how a CFPB director committed to transparency and accountability operates. We deserve better,” added Frisch.
Kraninger arrives to CFPB’s top job with no experience protecting consumers nor in financial regulation. Neither does she bring experience in directing a large government agency. While at OMB, she was considered a midlevel appointee. Earlier and in a series of replies to questions from the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, one of the questions posed was, “Can you identify any actions he [Mulvaney] has taken that you disagree with and explain why you disagree?” Kraninger’s response was, “I cannot identify any actions that Acting Director Mulvaney has taken with which I disagree.” Under Mulvaney’s leadership, the CFPB was transformed from a vigilant consumer advocate into a servant to corporations. Just a few of the anti-consumer actions taken by Mulvaney include a lack of enforcement of the nation’s fair lending laws, rollbacks of consumer protections, and suppression of the CFPB’s Student Loan Ombudsman
report that found how high fees were charged to college students by major banks. Most importantly, even in the handful of cases brought under Mulvaney, financial actors who defrauded and abused consumers, next to nothing was paid in restitution – monies that could help make consumers whole financially. Instead of enforcement, many consumer activists would view that lack of action as simply a businessfriendly pass. For the nation’s consumers, however, financial fairness – rules that eliminate debt traps including payday loans, as well as restitution from lawsuits that earlier returned nearly $12 billion to those who had been financially harmed—could seem like CFPB’s history but not its current focus. What happens over the next five years will test the mettle of those who fought to create an agency given the mission to protect consumer finances against profiteers who argue that baseline protections for consumers are an

unnecessary burden to business. “[Donald] Trump and his appointees have done everything in their power to undermine the Consumer Bureau. Mick Mulvaney, who Trump installed
to serve as Acting Director of the agency, dropped lawsuits and investigations into abusive payday lenders, took away the Office of Fair Lending and Equal Opportunity’s enforcement powers, fired the members of the agency’s Consumer Advisory Board, scaled back enforcement actions against bad actors, sought to slash the agency’s budget, and apparently made it his mission to help out bad actors,” said Congresswoman Maxine Waters. This long-time California Representative is expected to chair the House Financial Services Committee in the new Congress. In the current Congress, she serves as the Committee’s Ranking Member. Some consumer advocates prefer to give Kraninger the benefit of the doubt, hoping that the new Bureau Director will do the right thing. “If Kraninger plans on taking her public duty seriously, she should commit to implementing the Payday Rule as written and put the CFPB back on the track of protecting consumers from financial misconduct,” said Yana Miles, Senior Legislative Counsel with the Center for Responsible Lending. “Kraninger has a clear choice to make,” noted Jose Alcoff, Payday Campaign Manager at Americans for Financial Reform, “she can faithfully uphold the mission of the consumer bureau to protect families from the financial industry’s worst abuses or she can continue Mulvaney’s playbook of catering to predatory lenders at the expense of the 99 percent.” Charlene Crowell is the Center for Responsible Lending’s Deputy Communications Director.
We Must Protect Our Children, America! By Marian Wright Edelman Six years ago last week, December 14 started off like an ordinary morning in classrooms across our country. Children rushed in to school bundled against the cold, chatting and laughing and trying to contain all of their extra energy and excitement from the bright holiday season. Concerts were scheduled, classroom parties were planned, and teachers were squeezing in their last few lessons before winter break. It was the same in Newtown, Connecticut—but that was the unforgettably horrible day 20 first graders and six adults walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School and never walked back out. When he spoke two days later at a prayer vigil for the victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook, President Barack Obama said: “This is our first task—caring for our children. It’s our first job. If we don’t get that right, we don’t get anything right. That’s how, as a society, we will be judged. And by that measure, can we truly say, as a nation, that we are meeting our obligations? . . . . Can we say that we're truly doing enough to give all the children of this country the chance they deserve to live out their lives in happiness and with purpose? Can we honestly say that we’re doing enough to keep our children—all of them—safe from harm?” President Obama said if we were honest with ourselves we knew the answer: no. He continued: “Since I’ve been President, this is the fourth time we have come together to comfort a grieving community torn apart by a mass shooting. The fourth time we’ve hugged survivors. The fourth time we’ve consoled the families of
victims. And in between, there have been an endless series of deadly shootings across the country, almost daily reports of victims, many of them children, in small towns and big cities all across America . . . We will be told that the causes of such violence are complex, and that is true. No single law—no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world, or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. But that can’t be an excuse for inaction. Surely, we can do better than this. If there is even one step we can take to save another child, or another parent, or another town, from the grief that has visited Tucson, and Aurora, and Oak Creek, and Newtown, and communities from Columbine to Blacksburg before that—then surely we have an obligation to try.” President Obama did try, but once again, as a nation we failed. We failed every person in America who has been injured and killed by guns since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School
including most heartbreakingly thousands of children. We failed the high school students murdered at Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School. We failed the toddlers, children, and teenagers among the worshipers killed at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. And we’ve failed thousands of children killed in their homes and communities across our nation and the family members, classmates, and friends all of them left behind. We failed Makiyah Wilson, the 10-year-old girl who was shot and killed in front of her Washington, D.C. home in July while trying to buy a treat from the ice cream truck. We failed seven-year-old Taylor Hayes, who died in Baltimore that same month after being shot while riding in the back seat of a car. And in a coincidence almost too terrible to be true, we failed Taylor’s fiveyear-old half-sister Amy Hayes, who was shot and injured on November 19 walking to buy juice at the corner store. Amy’s great-grandmother said that when she saw Amy fall to
the ground she thought the young girl had tripped in her Pink Panther sneakers because she hasn’t learned how to tie her shoelaces very well yet. We are still wantonly and sinfully continuing to fail every day in our duty to protect our children. According to the Children’s Defense Fund’s Parent and Child Trends survey conducted earlier this year by YouGov, children say they are more worried about a shooting happening in their schools than they are about fitting in with other children or experiencing peer pressure. Even children too young to be in kindergarten are at risk: more preschoolers are killed from guns each year than law enforcement officers in active duty. In 2017, 93 children under 5 were killed by guns. Between 1963 and 2017, 67,521 Black children and teens were killed by guns—nearly 17 times the number of recorded lynchings of Black people of all ages in the 74 years from 1877 to 1950. Have we no shame or sense of responsibility to place our children’s lives ahead of guns? But there is hope. Since the massacre at Sandy Hook, growing numbers of people in America have been saying no more. Mothers and fathers and now children and teenagers themselves are demanding that we protect children, not guns. Even some gun owners are demanding action. Overall, about 6 in 10 American voters support stricter gun control and believe more guns will only make our nation less safe according to a recent Quinnipiac University National Poll conducted in November 2018. This is a critical opportunity for members
of Congress and state legislators to move forward early in 2019 on essential common sense gun safety and ensure all children the right to grow up safely—free from fear and violence. With great urgency, we must: 1. Expand background checks to cover all gun sales—including gun sales at gun shows, on the internet or between private individuals. More than 9 in 10 American voters and gun owners support universal background checks. 2. Keep guns out of the hands of children and those who would use them against children through Child Access Prevention laws as well as Extreme Risk Protection Orders which empower families and law enforcement officers to temporarily limit gun access for those who pose a danger to themselves or others. 3. Fund research on the causes and consequences of gun violence to arm all of us with more information, not more guns. As today’s students become the next generation of voters and leaders a new groundswell of powerful voices is starting to shout surely, we can do better than this to protect our children. We must do better for our children. This holy season is a very fitting time to begin. Marian Wright Edelman is Past-President of the Children's Defense Fund, whose Leave No Child Behind’s mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities. “There is work to be done, and I appreciate the work of the police department, the D.A.’s office and those individuals who are bringing those concerns forward and balancing that with individuals who have been impacted,” she said. “I don’t want to see that happen to my family or any other family.” Councilman Bert Perello offered his condolences to Martinez about losing her son and supports keeping bad people off the streets. “We have a criminal justice system, they serve time, and
they get out,” he said. “The way the police department works with members of the city, even those who come up here and continuously hammer on the City of Oxnard compliment the city for working on them. I give them credit.” Councilman Bryan MacDonald recognizes the gang injunction issue is passionate with a lot of people and spoke to someone who referred to himself as a former gang member. “I got tired of looking over my shoulder,” the youth told MacDonald. “The police were
part of it, his parole agent was part of it, and other gang members were part of it. There is a way to make a choice.” Mayor Pro Tem Carmen Ramirez extended her condolences to Martinez and noted it is difficult to speak so vividly on the tragedy. “When the gang injunction came out, I had some issues with the Constitutional outreach, and the court agreed,” she said. “I appreciate everybody’s point of view, and I think we can learn from each other and I appreciate the police department’s effort to

fine-tune this.” Councilwoman Gabriela Basua said the injunction is not an easy subject when Mrs. Martinez shares her experience. “No mother should ever go through that,” Basua said. “If this gang injunction saves one life, then the gang injunction has done its job. We need to work together, and we need you (the organizations) to be our eyes out there.” Councilman Oscar Madrigal said he could speak for over 10 minutes on the
subject. “This weekend, I went to the library, and I was surprised there was nothing on gangs at the library,” he said. “There were two books, and they were both at the South Oxnard Library.” He referenced books called “The War on Kids” and “Gangsters” published by the New York University Press. “It has a Latino with a gun pointing at the person,” he said. “It was eye-opening, and there is little information on gang injunctions.”
Mayor Tim Flynn said the council asked the police to get community input and they did precisely that. “I don’t think anyone is sitting on this dais, sitting in the audience or watching this evening that would argue that gangs by nature are a cult of death," he said. "They are the most destructive force of human life in this city. No other force is more harmful to families, children, neighbors, and children than gang members and the acts they are committing in this city.”
Consultants that assist with handling the minor issues that occur within the downtown area. Often, the security consultants are the first people we call to handle the loitering issues, as there are only two police officers assigned to the downtown district.” Most of the loiterers are unruly, and under the influence, she said, and the calls for assistance mean delayed responses. “My health center is right next to the rescue mission that has a large share of encounters with its homeless crisis and the drug epidemic,” she said. “This year alone we’ve had eight encounters and had to call the Oxnard P.D. or professional security consultants for issues that need immediate attention. There have been countless encounters of issues we’ve managed to handle on our own; however, it is an increasing concern to our staff and patient safety.” Mayor Tim Flynn said he commented to City Manager Alex Nguyen three weeks earlier about getting them help and asked him to look at the budget for security downtown and police presence until the shelter opens. “I’m hoping that the police presence which has been cut in half because of budget cuts and the security contract cut in half approximately that we’re able to do something to fill that gap until we can open the shelter,” he said. Flynn said Nguyen has told him the winter warming shelter would be a 24-hour shelter for the first time. “It will accommodate up to 100 of the 300 homeless,” Flynn said. Karl Lawson from the city’s housing department told the council there is not an
expected opening date for the temporary emergency shelter. “We are working closely with great assistance from the human resources department to hire a compliment of staff to be able to have personnel on duty 24 hours a day,” he said. In previous years the city provided nighttime only warming shelter relief, Lawson said, that alternated between the Oxnard and Ventura armories. “The two cities took major steps this year in appropriating funding to establish yearround 24-hour shelters, and we are working diligently to make that happen,” he said. “It is not yet a reality, and we are searching for a site. We do have an operator selected through a multi-jurisdictional RFP process, an organization called Mercy House, and we hope that next year we’ll be able to formalize that and make that a reality.” Once it became apparent the city would not be able to open a shelter in time for the inclement weather, he said the city asked for letters of interest and statements of qualifications to operate a temporary emergency shelter. “The California Military Department has relinquished control of the National Guard Armory in Oxnard which belongs to the city and for the first time that building is available for use as a 24-hour shelter,” he said. On Oct. 16, the City of Oxnard allocated $200,000, and the city and county of Ventura followed suit, and we issued a request for organizations to operate a temporary emergency shelter because the organization that is interested in operating a yearround shelter is not interested in operating a temporary one.” Lawson said the city was disappointed when no organization submitted a proposal, and that left them with two options, to either forgo a shelter this year or hire its staff and run the center. “That’s why we were here last week to get five new job classifications to hire five new people," he said. "We are well into the process of recruiting and hiring those folks, and we have the facility almost furnished and ready to go. However, we can’t open that facility until we have a compliment of employees sufficient in number to be able to stay open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We’re a couple of weeks away from doing that.”

than 800 employees work at 14 locations. “We are a non-profit health center serving the underserved population with medical, dental, mental health and optical needs,” she said. “I am here this evening with my colleagues with rising concerns about the increased experiences in our Oxnard offices with transient individuals, loitering and delayed response time and handling issues with the behavior of many of the loiterers.” She said the offices are finding an increase of drug paraphernalia, trash, and human waste around the immediate area of their locations and in the public parking areas owned by the city which is being overtaken by the transient population. “It is my understanding that an attempt to have a five-year plan to address the homeless crisis has been made; however we are not aware of action being taken,” she said. “We understand that things don’t happen overnight, but we do feel that a better sense of urgency needs to be placed on the matter.” During a recent meeting with an Oxnard Police Department beat officer, Andrade asked for assistance to address the concern; however she said it is apparent that without shelter options they are not able to respond. “I understand the National Guard Armory on K Street was planning to open on Dec. 10; however, my understanding is the doors have not opened, and the RFPs (Requests for proposals) haven’t been promising,” she said. “Additionally, I learned that 40 hours were cut from the Professional Security

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. HEALTH Volunteer Christmas Decorator Triples Effort After Diagnosis By Jeff Bobo
Tainted Romaine Lettuce Traced to at Least 1 California Farm By Matthew Perrone WASHINGTON (AP)—U.S. health officials have traced a food poisoning outbreak from romaine lettuce to at least one farm in California. But they cautioned Thursday that other farms are likely involved in the E. coli outbreak and consumers should continue checking the label before purchasing romaine lettuce. The Food and Drug Administration said 59 people in 15 states have now been sickened by the tainted lettuce. That's seven more cases than previously reported, but regulators said they are fairly confident that the lettuce which first triggered the outbreak has been removed from the market. The FDA told consumers to avoid romaine lettuce just before Thanksgiving. Officials said a water reservoir at Adam Bros. Farms in Santa Barbara
County tested positive for the bacterial strain and the owners are cooperating with U.S. officials. Officials from the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have not determined how the water reservoir— which is used to irrigate lettuce— became contaminated. The bacteria can get into water and soil through multiple routes, including waste from domesticated animals or wild animals, fertilizer and other agricultural products. The FDA's Dr. Stephen Ostroff said investigators have linked the tainted lettuce to multiple distributors and processors, suggesting it must have come from several farms. A man who answered the phone at Adam Bros. Farms said he could not comment on the government announcement. According to the company's website, it only grows vegetables products, including broccoli, cauliflower, celery and various types of lettuce. The government also narrowed
the source of the outbreak to three California counties: Santa Barbara, Monterey and San Benito. That's down from six California counties under investigation when regulators began warning the public last month. Regulators said people should only buy lettuce with a label listing where and when it was harvested. Lettuce from outside the three California counties that was harvested after Nov. 23 should be safe to eat. Romaine harvesting recently began shifting from California's Central Coast to winter growing areas, primarily Arizona, Florida, Mexico and California's Imperial Valley. Those winter regions weren't yet shipping when the illnesses began. E. coli, the bacteria often associated with food poisoning, usually causes sickness two to eight days later, according to health authorities. Most people with the infection get diarrhea and abdominal cramps. Some cases can be life-threatening, causing kidney failure and seizures.
CHURCH HILL, Tenn. (AP)—A Tennessee man who has been decorating roadside Christmas trees for the past dozen years is tripling his efforts this year in case it's his last. About 12 years ago, Larry Williams and his daughter joined a lady, Carol Thompson, who was decorating trees for Christmas on the north end of Bradley Creek Road near the Carters Valley Road intersection. It started as a fun project for him and his daughter, but when she grew out of it, Williams continued. Usually he would do about 10 trees, but earlier this year Williams was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He's experiencing some of the symptoms such as shaking hands, but that hasn't discouraged him from making this year's display his best ever. As of the end of November, he was closing in on 30 trees, most of which have been decorated by him, although there have been a few friends stopping in to help here and there. “I want to make it good this year in case I can't get up there next year,” Williams told the Times News. “The lady who started this (Thompson) stopped a couple of days ago and asked if I'd gone crazy. She said, ‘When are you going to stop?' Last year I maybe did 10, and they werent as bright and pretty as they are now.” He added, “I actually enjoy doing it. It's something that relieves stress. It puts a little stress on your legs.” Most of his trees are the traditional spruces or pines, but he's also got a few non-evergreens in the mix. In most cases, the branches of
the non-evergreens are completely wrapped in garland. One of them he calls his “Tree of Many Colors” after the famous Dolly Parton song. Every year after Christmas, Williams hits the Christmas ornament sales. He secures the ornaments with strong pipe cleaners, and he hasn't lost many over the years to high winds and rain. He hoped that all 30 trees would have crosses and several would be lit with solar powered lights. “Looks kind of spooky at night coming through with those lights,” he said. “It's pretty, though.” The architect of Bradley Creek Road's Christmas tree display has been a mystery to most until now. One day the trees would be bare, and the next day they would be decorated. But with this year's effort being tripled, more people have seen Williams on the job, and more people have stopped to talk to him. “There are so many people who have stopped and said, ‘So you're the one who does this,' “Williams said. “‘We finally get to see who does it.' Most of them just say how much they like it and enjoy coming by and seeing it. It puts them in a Christmas spirit.” Williams added, “I think Christmas just makes you feel good. Everybody's laughing because I got started in October. They're saying Thanksgiving isn't here yet and all this stuff, but Christmas is a happy time of the year for most people. If you can help make somebody smile or give them that extra little boost, it's a good thing. The world is just too divided now anyway, so it's a good thing.” A man stopped about a week or two and was talking to Williams and his friend Sherry Bruce, who was helping decorate.
AARP Poll: Majority of Caregivers with Family Suffering from Dementia, Spend Less Time with Friends By Stacy M. Brown For family caregivers, the holidays can be a joyful time when spirits are lighter and it feels good to care for loved ones and enjoy time together, celebrating with family traditions. But for most family caregivers, the holidays also bring stress, according to Amy Goyer, a family and caregiver expert at AARP, the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. “We’re already very busy with caregiving, and there’s even more to do during the holidays,” Goyer said. A major concern is for those caring for sufferers of dementia. A new AARP poll on dementia care has taken a closer look at the experiences of caregivers for family members with dementia and found more than half say their social life has suffered and nearly 45 percent say they feel alone. In addition, they are more likely to grow further apart from the ones they care for and other family members because of their caregiving responsibilities. Social isolation and loneliness are linked to poorer physical and mental health outcomes, health experts said. “Family caregivers take on big responsibilities that can be physically, emotionally and financially challenging. AARP’s new research shows that this can be particularly true for those caring for loved ones with dementia,” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer. “That’s why AARP has developed
resources to help family caregivers balance their own needs with the needs of their loved one.” Not only are the millions of family caregivers for those with dementia less socially connected, they are significantly more likely to put off medical care—over half (55 percent) have done so, compared to just 38 percent among the total caregiver population. However, there were positive health behaviors identified in the poll as well—79 percent took steps to maintain or improve their brain health and 47 percent exercised more. Still, when caring for those living with dementia, everyday stress is even higher, and holiday celebrations may be limited, Goyer said. “Caregivers may feel particularly isolated or lonely—especially if their loved ones aren’t able to understand or take part in holiday traditions and if caregivers are unable to get out to be with friends or other family
members,” she said. “It’s important to acknowledge and validate dementia caregivers’ feelings and needs, and to connect them with resources that can help, especially during the holiday season.” Many family caregivers feel alone in their situation, but there are others who understand as they are going through similar experiences, Goyer said. “I recommend connecting with other caregivers in an in-person support group, at a caregiving event, or online. The Alzheimer’s Association offers support for dementia caregivers, and AARP has teamed with them to offer the online Community Resource Finder, where caregivers can find local events and support groups,” she said. AARP also offers a free online Caregiving Community where caregivers can post questions, comments and topics as well as get advice from Goyer and other caregiving experts.
Many caregivers also join closed social media groups, such as Facebook. Other family members, friends or neighbors can help as well. A previous AARP poll found that almost 8 in 10 family caregivers say it would be helpful to have someone to talk with during the holidays. “If you are long-distance, you can call those you know who are caring for someone and really take the time to listen to them,” Goyer said. “For those nearby, offer to come by with a meal or a cup of hot cocoa and let them know they can confide in you, or offer to care for their loved one so they can enjoy some holiday activities.” Also, on the AARP Family Caregiving Site, Goyer also offers these 10 Tips for Caregivers During the Holidays: Feeling Stressed? Reset your Expectations. Meanwhile caregivers should be mindful of such things as prolonged social isolation and feelings of loneliness which have serious health effects that make it important to monitor and take care of themselves before they suffer a health crisis, Goyer said. “It can be difficult to evaluate the stress levels and vulnerability of ourselves or another person. Isolation and stress can build up over time, so it’s important to make ongoing effort to prevent burnout,” she said. The AARP Foundation has an assessment tool at Connect2Affect. org to help people better understand the signs of social isolation and offers solutions and ways to help others who are isolated.
“I advise people to watch for signs of burnout, like being short-tempered, changes in sleep patterns—sleeping too much or too little or waking up a lot, for example—crying a lot, severe mental, emotional or physical exhaustion, prolonged overwhelming sadness, loss of motivation—just not caring anymore, feeling hopeless and ineffective, letting paperwork pile up and bills go unpaid, allowing a vast
Not only are the millions of family caregivers for those with dementia less socially connected, they are significantly more likely to put off medical care. change in our living environment or longing to run away,” Goyer said. “These are red flags that tell us it’s time to put more effort into taking care of ourselves. I view it like my car—it can’t run on empty and neither can I.” For the holidays, Goyer said caregivers should try to focus on the simple things like holiday music, movies, stories or food. “Above all, fully experience the most meaningful things during the holidays and enjoy those treasured moments with your loved ones,” she said.

Nancy Wilson, Grammy-Winning Jazz Singer, Dies at 81 By Andrew Dalton and Hillel Italie Nancy Wilson, the Grammy-winning “song stylist” and torch singer whose polished popjazz vocals made her a platinum artist and top concert performer, has died. Wilson, who retired from touring in 2011, died after a long illness at her home in Pioneertown, a California desert community near Joshua Tree National Park, her manager and publicist Devra Hall Levy told The Associated Press late Thursday night. She was 81. Influenced by Dinah Washington, Nat “King” Cole and other stars, Wilson covered everything from jazz standards to “Little Green Apples” and in the 1960s alone released eight albums that reached the top 20 on Billboard's pop charts. Sometimes elegant and understated, or quick and conversational and a little naughty, she was best known for such songs as her breakthrough “Guess Who I Saw Today” and the 1964 hit “(You Don't Know) How Glad I Am,” which drew upon Broadway, pop and jazz. She resisted being identified with a single category, especially jazz, and referred to herself as a “song stylist.” “The music that I sing today was the pop music of the 1960s,” she told The San Francisco Chronicle in 2010. “I just never considered myself a jazz singer. I do not do runs and—you know. I take a lyric and make it mine. I consider myself an interpreter of the lyric.” Wilson's dozens of albums included a celebrated collaboration with Cannonball Adderley, “Nancy Wilson/ Cannonball Adderley,” a small group setting which understandably could be called jazz; “Broadway—My Way”; “Lush Life”; and “The Nancy Wilson Show!” a best-selling concert recording. “How Glad I Am” brought her a Grammy in 1965 for best R&B performance, and she later won Grammys for best jazz vocal album in 2005 for the intimate “R.S.V.P (Rare Songs, Very Personal)” and
in 2007 for “Turned to Blue,” a showcase for the relaxed, confident swing she mastered later in life. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded her a “Jazz Masters Fellowship” in 2004 for lifetime achievement. Wilson also had a busy career on television, film and radio, her credits including “Hawaii Five-O,” “Police Story,” the Robert Townsend spoof “Meteor Man” and years hosting NPR's “Jazz Profiles” series. Active in the civil rights movement, including the Selma march of 1965, she received an NAACP Image Award in 1998. Wilson was married twice— to drummer Kenny Dennis, whom she divorced in 1970; and to Wiley Burton, who died in 2008. She had three children. Born in Chillicothe, Ohio, the eldest of six children of an iron foundry worker and a maid, Wilson sang in church as

Within six weeks I had all the things I wanted.” a girl and by age 4 had decided on her profession. She was in high school when she won a talent contest sponsored by a local TV station and was given
her own program. After briefly attending Central State College, she toured Ohio with the Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band and met such jazz artists as Adderley, who encouraged her to move to New York. She soon had a regular gig at The Blue Morocco, and got in touch with Adderley's manager, John Levy. “He set up a session to record a demo,” Wilson later observed during an interview for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. “Ray Bryant and I went in and recorded ‘Guess Who I Saw Today,' ‘Sometimes I'm Happy,' and two other songs. We sent them to Capitol and within five days the phone rang. Within six weeks I had all the things I wanted.” Her first album, “Like in Love!”, came out in 1959, and she had her greatest commercial success over the following decade despite contending at times with the latest sounds. Gamely, she covered Beatles songs (“And I Love Her” became “And I Love Him”), Stevie Wonder's “Uptight (Everything's Alright)” and “Son of a Preacher Man,” on which she strained to mimic Aretha Franklin's fiery gospel style. She was so outside the contemporary music scene an interviewer once stumped her by asking about Cream, the million-selling rock trio featuring Eric Clapton. “It took me years to know what that question was about. Remember, I was constantly working or I was traveling to perform. The ‘60s for me were about work,” she told JazzWax in 2010. In the 1970s and after, she continued to record regularly and perform worldwide, at home in nightclubs, concert halls and open-air settings, singing at jazz festivals from Newport to Tokyo. She officially stopped touring with a show at Ohio University in September 2011, but had been thinking of stepping back for years. When she turned 70, in 2007, she was guest of honor at a Carnegie Hall gala. The show ended with Wilson performing such favorites as “Never, Never Will I Marry,” “I Can't Make You Love Me” and the Gershwin classic “How Long Has This Been Going On?”
Film Review: ‘Green Book’ Is Must-See Moviemaking By Hollywood Hernandez Live The Green Book was a travel guide for African Americans that was written by an African American mail carrier named Victor Green. "The Negro Motorist Green Book" started out in the late 40's and it was a travel guide of places in The Jim Crow South. It listed places that were safe havens for African Americans to stay, grab a bite to eat, or even get a haircut. The book was put into publication throughout the 1960's. GREEN BOOK is based on a true story about classicallytrained Black jazz pianist, Don Shirley (played by Oscarwinner Mahershala Ali), and Tony Lip, a mob club bouncer who got his nickname based on his ability to talk his way out of almost any situation,
played by Viggo Mortensen. When Shirley embarks on a concert tour that will take him into the deep south he hires Tony Lip as his driver and protector. The movie is a great history lesson about the racist attitude in the south that allowed an African American to play at a venue, but who was not allowed to use the bathroom
facilities in that same building. It's also a movie about class and culture. Shirley, the musician, is highly-educated and sophisticated and Tony the Lip is just a guy from an Italian neighborhood in The Bronx. The two men could not be any more different. However, it's a movie about friendship as well. The two men, with all of
their differences, become loyal friends with Mortensen's becoming a protector to a man who he sees being treated unfairly and Ali's character becomes a mentor to a guy who'd rather fast talk his way out of a situation than to learn about it. The movie is both educational and heartfelt. It is a must-see movie that takes us back to the past and shows us how far we've come when it comes to dealing with attitudes about race and class. You will highly enjoy this film. The movie is rated PG- 13 for language, violence, and suggestive material and it has a run time of 2 hours and 10 minutes (which passes by very quickly). I didn't want the story to end. This movie gets my highest rating on my "Hollywood Popcorn Scale."
With Blockbuster Effects, Peter Jackson Brings WWI to Life By Jake Coyle NEW YORK (AP)—Peter Jackson has used digital wizardry to conjure J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth and King Kong's 1930s New York, but he has now—in perhaps his most acclaimed film—employed all his technical powers to bring to life the Western Front of the first World War. Jackson's “They Shall Not Grow Old” is the 57-year-old filmmaker's first documentary. Commissioned by Britain's Imperial War Museum to coincide with the centenary of the Armistice, Jackson assembled the film from more than 100 hours of footage from the front and 600 hours of audio interviews conducted in the 1960s with surviving British soldiers. In the course of the five-year project, Jackson restored the heavily damaged, grainy footage, colorized it, stabilized the frame rates (many were only 13 frames per second, and could vary based upon how fast the cameraman was cranking) and transferred the film into 3-D. Along with adding battle sound effects, he even employed expert lip readers to recreate the unheard dialogue. With the kind of technology usually employed on a bigbudget spectacle, the fog of time lifted from the footage, revealing the soldiers anew. “The people on the film became human beings again. Their humanity jumps out at you,” Jackson said in an interview. “Their faces and the subtle way they move and their expressions, you just realize you're seeing you're seeing these people for the first time in 100 years.” “They Shall Not Grow Old,” which takes its name from the Laurence Binyon poem “For the Fallen,” has already played in the U.K., where it earned Jackson the best reviews of his career. “The effect is electrifying,” wrote the Guardian. “The faces are unforgettable.” Fathom Events will screen the film in 500 theaters nationwide on Monday and again on Dec. 27 before a more traditional release from Warner Bros. beginning Jan. 11. For Jackson, it's the culmination of a passion project, one undertaken in part as a tribute to the New Zealand filmmaker's grandfather, who fought in the war. The first three years of the project, edited at Jackson's postproduction facility, Park Road Post, weren't spent cutting anything together but sifting through the material and cleaning it up. “We were just listening, listening, listening, making notes and finding what this film was going to be,” he says. Startled by the clearness of the restoration, Jackson opted to impress as little as possible on the film. The only narration is that of the soldiers recounting their experiences; even dates and locations of battles have been withheld to capture the view of the war from those in the trenches. “They only saw what was right in front of their eyes,” says Jackson. The recollections of the British soldiers are surprisingly pragmatic and straightforward, lacking any sense of regret or self-pity. “They didn't want that and they didn't expect that,” says Jackson. “I don't think they would really approve of the way we think of the first World War now.” But the director is also quick to point out that the 120 men interviewed don't reflect a universal story of the war. These are survivors, many of whom went on to have families and productive lives, looking back decades later. “If we had interviews from the millions of soldiers that were killed, they would tell a different story,” says Jackson. Clarity has always been elusive in WWI, a war with puzzling beginnings and staggering loss of life that nevertheless became overshadowed in the popular imagination by World War II. But the simple, unclouded lucidity of “They Shall Not Grow Old” offers a small window into the Great War. Jackson hopes it inspires young people to learn about WWI and archivists around the world to make similar restorations of historical film. It's also the first worthwhile 3-D film in some time. Jackson, who was at the forefront of the reintroduction of 3-D, still believes it has value despite its cratered popularity. “People are only losing interest in it because of the quality of the projection, to be honest with you,” he says, predicting that that will change with the advent of laser projection. “Everything that people don't like about 3-D— and I agree with them, that feeling like you have sunglasses on while watching a film—that all goes away with laser projection.” So “There Shall Not Grow Old” is, in some ways, a characteristically Jackson film, with the notable exception that he wasn't there to shoot any of it. Not that he minded. “I don't actually like being on set, particularly. I always regard that as being an arduous chore,” he says. “So in a way I was quite happy to skip over the shooting part of it. The boys on the Western Front a hundred years ago did all the hard work filming it, and I was able to go straight to the part I like the most.”
