known as Persia, there lived a king named King Shahryar. One day, he found out that his wife betrayed him. In a fit of rage, he beheaded her and vowed to marry a noble lady every day, only to have her beheaded the next day.
As soon as the king had said that, he regretted his vow. That said, as a person of honour, he needed to keep it. Hence the king took a new wife every day, only to have her executed the next day.
After a while, the vizier, whose job was to find a new wife for the king every day, could not find eligible noblewomen anymore. The king then demanded the vizier’s daughter, Shahrazad.
The vizier was saddened and torn by the king’s request. But Shahrazad was a wise, young woman. She loved her father dearly and did not want to see her father suffer. She said to him, “Father, please let me go. Do not worry. I shall be safe for I have a plan.”
That night, before the king retired to his chambers, Shahrazad told the king that she wished to soothe his troubled mind with a story. He thought it was a strange request indeed, but the curious king consented.

On the second night, Shahrazad ended the tale, but she offered another one – one that was better than the first. Once again, the king was spellbound by the account and spared Shahrazad’s life for another night so that she could complete her tale.
On the third night, Shahrazad did the same thing again. She continued to do so for 1,001 nights, telling the king 1,000 stories which formed the Arabian Nights. On the final night, Shahrazad completed her last tale. She did not leave a cliffhanger in her story.
King Shahryar broke down and wept when he realised this. For you see, he had fallen in love with Shahrazad, but he did not wish to break his vow.
The gentle Shahrazad told the king that wicked vows must not be kept and asked him to spare her life to show that he was a good king. King Shahryar agreed, and Shahrazad soon became his queen. The king had been made wiser from the stories told by Shahrazad.
