While change has not been obvious since the launch of the AEC, it does not mean that everything has stayed the same. A bad habit of Thai people is that we often take valuable things for granted. Ten years ago, our neighbors including Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos looked up to us as a leader but it might not be the case today. We have always thought ahead and stayed in the forefront but if we stop moving, little by little, other countries will edge closer to overtake our place. This year has been quite a slow year for manufacturers but not so bad for investors. Most of the time Thai manufacturers have focused on Japan and Europe as main export destinations but the reality is that opportunities for exports are a lot closer to home. Every year, trade through our borders generate millions of baht from exported Thai-made products to our neighbors not only in consumer goods but also in parts, plastics and other commodities. These markets are closer and the cost of shipping is bound to be cheaper when

compared to exporting to European countries. Seeing opportunities for growth, the Thai government has created many special economic zones across Thailand. Recently the new economic zone of Sa Kaeo officially opened to the public. This beautiful province located in the east of Thailand bordering Banteay Meanchey and Battambang of Cambodia is targeted to attract at least five billion baht of investment in the year 2017. Last year, investment capital within the Sa Kaeo special economic zone surpassed 20 billion baht while another 10 billion baht is expected this year. It might be a good time to look back at what we have right now rather than looking elsewhere. Opportunities are always closer than you think.

Malaysia Adapts IoT to Improve Industries

The Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS) has launched the solution using IoT for industries. They plan to use the program in wide range of industries across the country. For example, a sensor called Mi-MSCAN TpH is designed to collect environmental data. MIMOS has also created a system to link producers, traders and suppliers together in a unified system to create a supply chain management solution and e-market platform. The system includes microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) wireless sensor network used to captures environmental data and cloud software which can detects and analyzes potential threats.

Thailand’s Automotive Producers Ask for EVs Supporting Policy Thailand has ambitious plans to expand electric vehicles (EVs) market. However, the support from government is still not clear resulted in the debate among private sector. President of the Thai Automotive Industry Association (TAIA) states that the government should be clear about EVs policy in order to assure and increase EVs production. The government should offer tax incentives and support the charging station if they want to achieve their plan to have Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) operating 20 more electric buses in 2016 and a total of 200 buses by next year.

ASIA PACIFIC NEWS Chinese Solar Power Company is Looking Forward to Invest in Laos Sun Can, a joint venture company between Beijing Sun Can and Zhongli Talesun Solar established in Beijing, aims to partner up with local companies in Asean from both private and state sectors. Right now, Sun Can provides various services such as system design, key equipment manufacturer and supply in thermal energy concentrated in solar powers. “We are interested in investing in Laos. However, we need to have cooperation from local operators to join the feasibility study and also be business partners,” the company’s CEO Dr. Zhihao Yao said. The company also expects to join the Laos’ national power grid for exports renewable energy to the neighboring countries.

Taiwan’s China Airlines are Protested by 96% of Its Crews On 24 th June, China Airlines in Taiwan announced to cancel 76 flights to Hong Kong, South Korea, Philippines, Japan and others including Thailand estimated more than 20,000 passengers will be affected by the obstruction. 96% employees of the airline agree to support the strike due to extremely long work hours, low pay on holiday shifts, and changes that affect crew’s rights. The union’s director, Lin Hsin-yi said the company should revert back to the hourly wage rates to stop this airport rebellion.

The Opportunity is Still Exist in Indonesian Smartphones Market There is still some space in mobile phone market of Indonesia. According to MARS research specialists and Advan, local smartphone company, people are looking for durable and sophisticated smartphones in a reasonable price. “In principle, people want things cheaper but more advanced which in some cases is rather impossible,” said Hasnul, the former president director of telecommunications company XL Axiata. However, there is a hope in smartphone industry since manufacturers can reduce the production cause. The study also claimed that people in Indonesia changes smartphone every less than two years,

G lobal news Schneider Electric Updated its Input and Output Systems Schneider Electric, global specialist in Energy Management, made an exciting move to update capabilities for its universal I/O systems in Tricon CX compact safety system. The new system Foxboro FBM248 I/O under the brand Intelligent Marshalling allows users to adjust for unforeseen module changes and errors with a little impact on installation times. This new I/O has made significant impacts on reducing costs and space consumption. “We’re not just launching I/O boards here, we’re trying to build an entire approach to projects,” said Chris Lyden, Senior Vice President of strategy and process automation.

The Latest Robots from MiR Penetrate U.S. Market Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR) proudly presented its latest robot the MiR100. The MiR100 has built-in scanning sensors, a 3D camera and ultrasound for navigation and is currently supplied to some global manufacturers such as Leoni, Flextronics and Continental. The robot is an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) which can easily be controlled by an IOs or android device. It can carry masses of 220 pounds and can tow around 660 pounds with a battery life of up to 15 hours. It is considered to be a safe collaborative robot which will stop and automatically reroute itself around people or objects.

Warmlin Precision Products Are Selected by Aerostar Aerospace Warmlin, a manufacturer of highly complex precision components for the aerospace industry, has announced to be Aerostar’s first acquisition as a part of the company’s strategy to increase precision in processing. The two companies operate combined facilities of more than 100,000 ft2 to serve blue-chip aerospace customers. CEO of Aerostar Joe Muklevicz stated that Warmlin will be a part of the Aerostar family and will support each other’s growth. Warmlin’s adjacent capabilities will make this combined business a stronger business partner to our customers and accelerate the growth rate of the industry. 10

GLobAL news GE Power Made History with New Power Plant Steve Bolze, President and CEO of GE Power, announced the company’s Guinness World Record achievement as the world’s most efficient combined-cycle power plant for its Bouchain plant. According to GE, the air flow through the 605-MW plants HA compressor is designed to reach full power in less than 30 minutes offering flexibility for companies integrating renewable energy generation into systems or responding to weather changes and fluctuations in grid demand. The plant is a new combined cycle unit which can reduce emissions of CO2 by 65%, SO2 by 95% and cut particulate emission to zero.

Steve Bolze ประธานและ CEO ของบริษัท GE Power ได้ประกาศความภาคภูมิใจของโรงงาน ใหม่ที่มีชื่อว่า Bouchain ซึ่งได้รับการจดบันทึก ใน Guinness ในฐานะที่เป็นโรงงานพลังความ ร้ อ นร่ ว มที่ มี ป ระสิ ท ธิ ภ าพที่ สุ ด ในโลกในขณะนี้ อ้างอิงจาก GE โรงงาน Bouchain มีระบบการ ไหลเวียนอากาศสูงถึง 605 เมกะวัตส์ โดยผลิต จากคอมเพรสเซอร์ HA ที่สามารถให้พลังงาน เต็มอัตราได้ในเวลาไม่ถงึ 30 นาที ท�าให้โรงงานดัง กล่าวมีความยืนหยุน่ ในการสร้างพลังงานทดแทน ต่างๆ และสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนได้ตามสภาวะการ ผลิตต่างๆ เป็นอย่างดี โรงงานนีใ้ ช้พลังงานความ ร้อนร่วมในการผลิตพลังงาน ทั้งยังสามารถลด อัตราการปล่อยของ CO2 ได้ถึง 65% และ SO2 95% อีกทั้งไม่ปล่อยอนุภาคใดๆทั้งสิ้น

PPG’s Coatings Factory Awarded from Recycling Systems The coatings and resins factory of PPG operating in Delaware, Ohio won the award for excellence from the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council due to its outstanding recycling project. The plant improves recycling systems and promotes activities to provide recycling-awareness and training courses to employees in the plant. PPG have also changed how some materials are recycled such as food containers allowing for an increase of its recycled materials by 63%. For traditional recycling materials, the company recycled around 68 tons in 2015 compared to 42 tons in 2014.

The Eurofighter Typhoon Is Armed by MBDA’s Latest Missiles In order to upgrade the weapons of European combat aircraft, world-class missile producer MBDA officially launched Storm Shadow cruise missiles for the Eurofighter Typhoon, one of the most advanced aircrafts available on the market on 13th June. The missiles are controlled by BAE systems embedded in the Eurofighter Typhoon which are able to adjust missile range. The company revealed at the Eurofighter consortium that it will carry out data analysis from tests and will explain how to use this weapon to service customers.

Newly Expanded Technical Center

Sumipol Corporation Limited, Thailand’s leading industrial tools distributor, is pleased to announce the launch of its newly expanded and renovated technical center of Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal Manufacturing (Thailand) Ltd. The term â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;State-of-the-artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; usually refers to something that is modern and beautiful but from another point of view and we also use this term to describe new and advanced technologies which are at the top of its class. This word represents both beauty and advances in technology and machine developers have been using this term to describe their new products. In this article, we take the opportunity to point out two important new technologies which are expected to change the face of manufacturing in the future.

Automation

Raw materials usually go through man processes with numerous machines required to produce a finished product. Unlike normal manufacturing machines, additive manufacturing is based on building something out of nothing where for one product, one machine is enough. While 3D technology is still new and quite expensive to implement, there are opportunities for businesses to invest. If you are targeting the aerospace or medical industry, 3D printing is your pass to success. Orders come in smaller quantities but profits for individual items are significant. It is human nature to continuously improve and evolve so the day that this technology becomes more affordable might be sooner than you think.

Toyota, Honda and many key manufacturers all around the world are now turning to fully automated processes. With different shapes, sizes and specialties, there are robot replacements for almost every job carried out by humans. The day where robots can think and act by themselves may not be far away.

When thinking about new technology, 3D printing or additive manufacturing is now at the forefront of everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s minds not only in the manufacturing sector but in every industry in the world. From humble beginnings starting in a small lab, this has now become world changing technology. Personalization, newer models and smaller orders per batch are reasons why this technology is booming. Industries such as the medical industry or aerospace often request special designs and products in small quantities where 3D printing provides the best solution.

When the time comes where additive manufacturing machines are more affordable, new players will enter the market so it is better to start now and become an industry leader.

Automation might not be a new concept but its development in recent years is what makes it interesting. Robots and automation are truly what should be called state-of-the-art machine tools. The use of robots or automation to replace manual labor has started with processes where workers can be easily injured such as welding or heavy parts removal in mostly routine work. Robots are now programed to understand their surrounding environments and have capabilities to analyze and identify issues or even make decisions. We might be used to the idea that robots and humans cannot work together but that is no longer the case. User friendliness is another feature of modern robots. For example, if there is an unexpected accident, processing will immediately stop and the system will send out warning signs for help.

Technologies have been created to serve as an alternative choice for manufacturers. However, the selection process can be overwhelming. Ideally we need to understand how much is too much and when too little is not enough. If a robot is too advanced for the applications needed by your company, it will not be utilized to its full potential and you may have potentially over invested where funds could have been allocated in other areas. Underinvestment is also a concern because the technologies may not meet your current needs nor allow for business growth.

หากพูดถึงเทคโนโลยีที่น�ามาซึ่งความตื่นเต้น ไม่เพียงแต่ในอุตสาหกรรมการผลิตเท่านั้น แต่ทุกวงการทั่วโลก ต่างพากันตื่นตัวกับความ ก้าวหน้าอย่างก้าวกระโดดของเทคโนโลยีนี้ การพิมพ์แบบ 3 มิติ Addictive Manufacturing หรือ 3D Printing ล้วนแล้วแต่เป็นชื่อที่ใช้เรียก กระบวนการเดียวกัน นั้นคือ การขึ้นรูปชิ้นงาน จากการออกแบบ เริ่มแรกที่สามารถใช้งานได้ เพียงแต่ในห้องทดลอง กลายมาเป็นเทคโนโลยี ในระดับอุตสาหกรรม เป็นที่นิยมและเหมาะ สมอย่างยิง่ กับอุตสาหกรรมการผลิตในปัจจุบนั ที่ ต ้ อ งการจ� า นวนชิ้ น น้ อ ยแต่ มี ค วามหลาก หลายมาก เช่น การใช้งานในการออกแบบ วิศวกรรม การแพทย์ ไปจนถึงวิทยาการอวกาศ และการบิน

NOT JUST ANY ORKHOLDER

Workholding refers to any device that is used to a secure a workpiece and hold it in place against the forces of machining. The most basic workholding device is a simple clamp that is screwed into place on a machining centerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s table, but workholding can also involve complex fixtures that are custom-built for particular parts. Other common workholding devices include vises and chucks, as well as indexers or rotary tables that are able to change the partâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s position while it is held, so the machine can reach various features of the part without the setup having to be changed. With manufacturing operations using higher cutting speeds that place greater force on workholding equipment, choosing the correct system to hold on to the work is trickier than ever.

Every Work is Difference

In most machining applications, workholding also locates the part. In 24

turning, for example, a chuck not only holds the part securely but also holds it precisely on the centerline of the spindle. On a machining center, the vise or fixture that holds the part may also hold it in the precise position and orientation where the machining program expects to find it. For this reason, workholder plays an important part in making sure that the part is in the right place. Most situations requiring a custom workholding solution involve a difficult workpiece and/or operating environment. For instance, one challenge is holding very thin-wall parts while performing operations with high transferable torque values. In these operations, the workpiece can have a tendency to deform. This workholding system is commonly used for hobbing, shaping, shaving, turning, grinding and inspection applications. Nowadays, it is easy to adjust force on the workholder that you choose but it always wise to study the application carefully in order to get the perfect result.

Ensure Accuracy

Not only should the clamping system be precise, but several other related areas of the operation should also be reviewed to ensure the best possible results. The production environment and tooling must be suitable for the application. Just because it worked in the past doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean it is still effective. The accuracy of the locating and clamping surfaces on the workpiece should also be considered. Further, a clean workpiece yields the best end product. When debris builds up in the clamping area of a workpiece, it may affect how the piece is being held, and negatively affect the outcome of the entire operation. The clamping solution of choice should be one that not only is effective now, but will suit the needs of the shop well into the future. When the vendor is designing the fixture, the shop should convey what its needs will be down the line as well. Perhaps the workpiece is one of many in a series or part family, which could mean that relatively minor changes would have to be made to the workholding device to accommodate the new workpieces. Selecting the best workholding system for a given application ultimately leads to a better end product. By adhering to principles in choosing the workholding solution, and by maintaining a good and open relationship with the vendor, a shop can meet the challenges of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s demanding production environments.

โซลูชันที่ยังพอมีพื้นที่ให้เราขยับขยายตัวได้ ในอนาคต เมื่อปรึกษาผู้จ�าหน่าย อย่าลืมที่ จะปรึกษาถึงความเป็นไปในอนาคตหรือ ชิ้น งานอื่นๆ ภายในรุ่นเดียวกัน เพื่อเตรียมว่าใน อนาคตหากมีการเปลี่ยนแปลง ตัวอุปกรณ์จับ ยึดนี้จะสามารถปรับเปลี่ยนไปในทิศทางใด มากน้อยแค่ไหน อุปกรณ์จับยึดที่ดีจะส่งผลต่อคุณภาพของชิ้น งานอย่างชัดเจน การคัดเลือกโซลูชันที่เหมาะ สม เลือกผู้ให้บริการที่ไว้ใจได้ควบคู่กัน จะ ท�าให้ธรุ กิจของท่านพร้อมส�าหรับความท้าทาย ในอนาคตอย่างแน่นอน

The metal fabricator that processes plenty of hole-intensive parts with several contours and forms may want to consider a laser/punch combination machine. The equipment can cut down on excessive material movement and help to boost production efficiencies and quality efforts. Most fabricators evaluate a part they need to process and think, “That’s a punch part, or that’s a laser part,” but it is not always so black and white. Often the part can be fabricated efficiently with either processing technology.

A Combination of Answers

Those questions can be answered with a general discussion of what laser/punch combination machines do. In fact, they are becoming increasingly popular because of their flexibility and reliability of automation. The machines may allow you to make parts faster and at a lower cost. Continuous improvement techniques focus on the elimination of unneeded material handling, and the design of the laser/punch combination machine supports such efforts because it eliminates the need to move parts from one machine to another. When blanks or parts have to be moved between machines, inaccuracies can occur because of misalignment of sheets and costs may increase because of the additional handling of parts.

For instance, if the machine has a tapping tool, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to send the part to a hardware-insertion station once the part exits the combination machine. The punch is used to process holes, create forms, tap extrusions, and fabricate the entire part if laser cutting is not needed. The laser is best used to process parts with complex geometries or with edges in need of a clean finish. It is also a useful tool for developmental parts because it can quickly produce just a few parts or special sizes without the need to build or order tooling.

Examples of parts processed with combination machines can be found in our everyday life. Many home kitchens have been updated to incorporate stainless steel appliances, and these appliances contain parts featuring louvers or offsets, hinges, and tapped holesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;perfect candidates for punching operations. The same appliance part also may require a clean edge free of burrs and nibble marks to meet the safety

requirements of the industry and the aesthetic demands of the consumer. This is achieved with the laser. Combination machines are highly successful in creating edges and contours that are efficient, precise, and clean for the most attractive and best possible finished part.

Samples of Use

In general, hole-intensive parts with complex forms are good candidates for a combination. The punch will produce standard holes much faster than they can be laser-cut, but the laser is able to process complex geometries that are not well-suited to punching techniques. The laser is also better for parts with many blending contours or different radii that can require excessive tooling to process the part or if a single punch process on the contour might leave unwanted nibble marks. You may also need the laser processing capacity of the machine if smooth and clean edges are required for an aesthetically appealing part. JULY - AUGUST 2016

A “composite” is when two or more different materials are combined together to create a superior and unique material. This is an extremely broad definition that holds true for all composites, however, more recently the term “composite” describes reinforced plastics. Composite materials have found wide use in orthopedic applications, particularly in bone fixation plates, hip joint replacement, bone cement, and bone grafts. Carbon-fiber composites in PEEK or polysulfone matrices can be fabricated with stiffness and tensile strength comparable to the bone they replace. Examples are press-fit femoral stems made from laminated unidirectional carbon fibers in PEEK, polysulfone, liquid crystalline polymer (LCP), and polyetherimide (PEI).

Composites also are making headway in implantable medical devices. Historically, implant designers have faced difficulty achieving acceptance from regulatory agencies. Nevertheless, the use of composite implants is on the rise. New composite materials and medical applications for them are gaining approval in greater numbers from the U.S. Food and Drug Admin. (FDA, Silver Spring, Md.) and the European Commission (Brussels, Belgium), marking certifies that a product meets European Union consumer use standards. Traditional prosthetic and orthotic materials such as wood, aluminum, and leather have been largely replaced by high-performance composites and thermoplastics. CFR epoxy tubing has been used to replace stainless steel in artificial arms. Satin-weave carbon-fiber

The loss of a limb from an accident, war or disease is more frequent than one might think. Prosthetics and related orthotics (body part braces) together make up a 2.8 billion dollars global market. The market for prosthetic feet in the U.S. alone is estimated at 300,000 units per year, according to Ron Nelson of ClosedMold Composites LLC (CMC, Salt Lake City, Utah). Demand for foot prosthetics has built a market for carbon fiber, which provides more energy storage and return (known as dynamic response) than any other material.

Dental implants have been developed to overcome the problems associated with bridges and removable dental prostheses. The damaged or missing tooth is replaced by an artificial permanent implant. Composites made of SiC and carbon or carbon fibers reinforced carbon have been proposed. These materials have some advantages over ceramics and metal alloys: they combine sufficient strength with a low elastic modulus, similar to that of natural teeth.

Hand MEasuring EquipMEnt in an Era of robots

To meet quality standards of customers, manufacturers need to measure their products throughout the stages of manufacturing. Without a proper measurement process, there is no guarantee that the finished product will meet quality standards. The industry progresses every day and we have reached the point where robots can perform almost every task in a production line.

Not all processes are suitable for automated systems. Some manufacturers only require a quick test or for SME manufacturers, buying a robot just for measuring is not cost effective. It is all about finding the right solution for the right manufacturer. Measuring instruments have certain tolerance levels of error and the most commonly used instruments in manufacturing are no exception. Recognizing these errors is a basic requirement for proper inspection. It’s not necessary to comprehend the precise physics or geometry of the underlying error, but it is important to understand the nature of the error and the extent to which it might affect or limit the instrument’s precision. For example, the micrometer is a very accurate and stable instrument, but even this instrument has a margin for error.

Over-tightening the micrometer’s spindle can cause the anvil portion of the gage to change shape with lower-quality micrometers made of less stable materials prone to this error. While the amount of deflection may only be 0.0001 or 0.0002 of an inch, this could be 50% of some tolerance bands. A Robot may be able to scan and report all results with 99% accuracy within 10 seconds but if your business only produces 100 pieces a day, alternative methods of measurement may be more cost effective.

An operator may consistently measure a tenth on the plus side compared to the rest of the workshop. Further variations could come from the simple fact that we all have good days and bad days. Given these circumstances, reference standards can help the overall team. Making quick measurements to reference standards before a critical feature is measured can ensure that the combination of operator and

A ut0mation SENSORING เหตุผลเบือ้ งหลังกระบวนวัดและเทียบค่าต่างๆ ในกระบวนการผลิตนั้นเป็นที่เด่นชัดคือ เพื่อ ให้มั่นใจว่าผลิตภัณฑ์หรือชิ้นงานที่ผลิตขึ้น นั้นจะเป็นไปตามมาตรฐานที่เราต้องการ ตรง ตามความต้องการของลูกค้า หากปราศจาก ขั้นตอนการวัดแล้วคงเป็นไปไม่ได้ที่จะท�าการ เที ย บว่ า ชิ้ น งานได้ คุ ณ ภาพหรื อ ไม่ ในยุ ค ปัจจุบันที่ระบบการท�างานแบบอัตโนมัติเช่น หุ่นยนต์ ก็เข้ามามีส่วนในการท�างานภายใน โรงงงานมากขึ้นทุกขณะ
