Boerewors competition held in U’hage

ting down to the serious business of making their special traditional boerewors. This is to participate in the regional rounds of one of South Africa’s fiercest culinary battles - the 2011

Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition. Uitenhage will host one of the last regional rounds on 27 August at Shoprite Uitenhage, where 11 contestants hailing from Uitenhage, Kirkwood and Despatch areas will take on the challenge. Only the first place winner of each regional round will go on to battle it out against their provincial counterparts in ten provincial rounds that take place on Saturday, 17 September. Members of the public are invited to go and watch as the contestants battle it out in this nerve-racking clash which starts at 09:30. Well known personality John Cory junior of Big Boyz will be the MC, whilst Bay FM award winner singer, Monique van Driel will entertain the crowd with lively upbeat sounds for the morning. Trolley dash Members of the public will be able to take part in a trolley dash to win a trolley-full of groceries! Various

An independent judging panel, selected and trained by the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will judge each regional round where prospective Boerewors Champions have to braai 1 kg of their own-recipe boerewors that will be judged raw and cooked. The competition ends on Saturday, 8 October when the provincial winners compete in braai-offs at Sun City’s Valley of Waves in a vigorous grand finale. The champion will earn the sought-after 2011 Boerewors Crown and also drive away in a brand new Toyota Hilux 2.7 Double Cab Raised Body Raider!

Muir College will be hosting its annual Spring Festival on Saturday, 3rd September. The popular Afri-save Marathon will start at 06:00, followed by a 10km run at 07:00 and a 5km fun run at 08:00. The public is invited to visit Muir and join in on the fun and entertainment which stretches from a tea garden, soccer tournament to paint ball and food stalls. Entry forms for the marathon and fun run can be collected from Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage and at the Muir College office. Christadelphians gedenk Kabah met konsert Kabah het ‘n ryk en kleurvolle geskiedenis en om dié erfenisnalatenskap te gedenk bied die Christadelphians ‘n spesiale gospelaand aan in die Allanridge gemeenskapsaal. Die gebeurtenis word gereël in samewerking met die Kabah Erfenisgroep. Die ou woonbuurt in Uitenhage is die plek waar ‘n hele paar bekende Suid-Afrikaners grootgeword het. Daar is Laetitia Bam (verpleegkundige), Ruscus Kopo (eerste swart burgermeester van Uitenhage), Aubrey Nkomo (ambassadeur van S.A. by V.N.), Enoch Sontonga (skrywer van nKosi Sikelele), adv. Denzil Potgieter (WVK), Marilyn Klassen (hoofmatrone: Uitenhage Provinsiale Hospitaal), Professor Cecil Arnolds (NMMU), Peter Swartz (S.A. Rugby) en so kan die lys aan en aangaan. WOMEN RAN ROADBLOCK

An all women road block was held last Friday in Mel Brooks Avenue, by police women from the SAPS Uitenhage Cluster. Addo murderer sentenced HEILIE COMBRINCK A murderer and his assistant were sentenced in the Grahamstown High Court for robbery and the murder of a 28 year old man at Madiba Shop in Addo. According to police spokesperson, W.O. Marianette Olivier, Mzoxola George (40) and Phumzile Bomba (33) on the night of 4 March 2009 visited the Madiba Shop in Addo. “George threatened the owner, his assistant and customers with a firearm, demanding cigarettes, air time and money. Bomba waited outside. The next moment George shot the 28 year old Abdullahi Barah Shuk in the head. He died on the scene.

“George went to back of the counter, grabbed the money and they ran away,” said W.O. Olivier. The following morning the investigating officer, W.O. Gert Lloyd, arrested Bomba in Addo. During March 2010 he also arrested George in Missionvale. Both of them remained in custody until the finalisation of the case. Bomba was sentenced 10 years imprisonment for assistance to murder and 12 years for robbery (effective 12 year sentence). George was sentenced 20 years for murder and 15 years for robbery (effective 25 years sentenced). The Magistrate sentencing them commended W.O. Lloyd on his excellent investigation.

Rape suspect arrested The highly effective and efficient manner in which detectives from the Uitenhage Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit worked around the clock, ensured that an alleged rape suspect (aged 24) was arrested within 24 hours after committing the crimes. According to W.O. Gerdag Swart, the first rape occurred last Friday between 08:00 and 10:00. “The suspect assaulted and allegedly raped a 22-year-old woman in a house in Blue Street,

Kamesh. The suspect was known to the victim. The second incident followed at about 11:45 when the man raped a 3-year-old girl,” said W.O. Swart. “With the assistance of the community the identity of the suspect was determined and detective members followed up every possible lead. At 12:00 last Saturday, the police arrested a 24year-old suspect in Blikkiesdorp,” said W.O. Swart. The man appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrates’ Court..

UD VERSLAGGEWER Die HTS Daniel Pienaar het onlangs deelgeneem aan die Oostelike Provinsie Brugboukompetisie wat deur die SuidAfrikaanse Instituut vir Siviele Ingenieurs aangebied word. Drie spanne van DP het ingeskryf en al die ander spanne uitgestof om die eerste drie plekke in die kompetisie te verower. Die wenbrug is deur die span bestaande uit Christo Crous, Nadia van Schalkwyk en Jacques Kruger gebou. Die brug het ‘n gewig van 160kg gedra. In die tweede plek was Lelanie Volschenk, Riaan Landman en Juan Lourens. Die span in die derde plek het bestaan uit Michael Gilchrest, Lehan Mulder en Ryno MacDonald. DP se wenspan vertrek vandag na Pretoria om aan die nasionale kompetisie deel te neem waar die wenners van al die onderskeie provinsies teen mekaar te staan kom. Chivandré Essop, a Grade 11 learner at Strelitzia High School, participated in the South African National Champion ships for Mixed Martial Arts in Bellville, Cape Town. Chivandré was awarded two gold medals and one silver medal for mixed martial arts which comprises a combination of styles, namely karate, kickboxing and muaythai. First year student wows at national summit

Zoleka Mtila First-year NMMU BCom accounting student Zoleka Mtila earned the top spot in the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) Student Leadership Summit this week. The 18-year old Thuthuka student from Despatch joined 24 other hopefuls from SAICA-accredited universities across the country in Johannesburg at the FNB Conference and Learning Centre to rub shoulders with senior business leaders at the summit. The growing needs of people, roads, hospitals to be built and filled with nurses

and doctors, inventions to better our standard of living and all of it must be generated by the world of commerce, was Zoleka’s winning argument. Her submission was in the form of a letter advising a grade 8 sibling on career options and opportunities available to them. ‘Dankie’ aan rugby onder steuners MICHAEL GREEN

Hier is van die legendariese 1970’s Springbokke (voor van links) Piet Visagie, David McDonald (organiseerder), Max Baise (oudskeidsregter), Syd Nomis, Piston van Wyk en Ian McCullum. HEILIE COMBRINCK Meeste van die oud-Springbokke wat 41 jaar gelede deel was van die 1970-span se reeksoorwinning teen die All Blacks, was Saterdag op hulle pos, dié keer as toeskouers tydens Suid-Afrika se sege oor Nieu-Seeland in die Nelson Mandelabaai-stadion. Tydens hulle verblyf op Uitenhage, by MiCasa en SuCasa gastehuise, het dié manne gesellig saamgekuier en menige wedstryd herleef. Daar was selfs vertellinge van onderonsies met skeidsregters wat vir groot vermaak gesorg het. Die Pasella televisiespan het ook ‘n draai op Uitenhage gemaak om ‘n program oor dié legendariese 1970’s spelers te maak.

BO: Piston van Wyk (links) word beskou as een van die “hardste” hakers wat nog in die middel van die Springbokvoorry gesak het. Hy was ook gereeld “in die sop” oor sy spel soos oudskeidsregter Max Baise kon onthou. Baise hou die rekord as die enigste SuidAf rikaanse rugbyskeidsregter wat vier toetse geblaas het waar die Springbokke teen die Britse Leeus te staan gekom het. REGS: Joggie Jansen is bekend vir een van die beroemdste duikslae in die geskiedenis van rugby toe hy as jong senter in 1970 ‘n plettervat op die All Black Wayne Cottrell gemaak het. Dis baie onwaarskynlik dat die volkslied al ooit beter by ‘n rugbywedstryd gesing is as voor verlede Saterdag se toets tussen die Springbokke en die All Blacks in die Nelson Mandelabaai-stadion. Dit is die mening van mnr. Cheeky Watson, president van die OP Rugbyunie. “Dit is die eerste keer dat ek gehoor het hoe sing almal by ‘n toetswedstryd ál die dele van die volkslied van die begin tot die einde in volle oorgawe. Dit was absoluut ongelooflik,” het Watson gesê. Die Bokke het met 18-5 gewen en hulle het gesê die ongelooflike ondersteuning wat hulle in die Oos-Kaap gekry het, het hulle gehelp om die sege te beklink. “Dankie. Julle het ons tuis laat voel. Julle gasvryheid en vriendelikheid het my so oorweldig, ek voel glad skuldig,” het die Springbok afrigter Peter de Villiers gesê. Terwyl die All Blacks hulle strydkreet gedoen het, het duisende toeskouers spontaan losgetrek met “Olé, olé, olé, olé” en dié haka soos verdwaalde stemmetjies in die bos laat klink.

The 15km road race is a par-

ticipation league event and starts at 06:30 with the 5km fun run at 06:45. Entry forms are available at Brocketts Sports and Brian Bands and participants may enter on site from 05:00 on the day of the event. There will be medals to all finishers, with big prize money
