olice in Uitenhage want to send out a stern warning to vehicle owners to be more alert and attentive when locking their vehicles and also to make sure that there are no items left in them.

“A number of incidents have been reported concerning the usage of jamming devices (remote control device) to gain access to vehicles in the Uitenhage area,” said W/O Gerda Swart, Uitenhage police spokesperson. Apparently suspects are using remote control devices to override the remote vehicle security system. “This enables them to gain access to the vehicle and take valuable items that were left inside the vehicle. Owners are once again requested to double check and ensure that the vehicle is locked before leaving it. “It is especially applicable when you cannot hear the clicking sound or see the head lights flashing when locking the vehicle.” It should also be second nature to all vehicle owners or passengers not to leave any visible items especially valuable and expensive items such as laptops, i-pads, computer equipment or cellphones in vehicles. “Do not leave items like a firearm or large amounts of cash in the glove compartment or anywhere else in the vehicle. “It is against the law to leave your firearm in a vehicle,” said W/O Swart.

Streets affected by forthcoming Carnival HEILIE COMBRINCK Jacaranda trees are in full bloom and this is associated annually with the start of the festive season and Uitenhage Street Carnival. The Rotary Club of Uitenhage together with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality wishes to inform the public regarding the streets affected by the forthcoming Street Carnival from 29 November to 1 December. The streets affected by the Carni-

val are: Church Street, Caledon Street (from Baird Street intersection through to the Chase Street intersection), Market Street (from Caledon down to Rich Street intersection). According to Francois Greeff from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, no parking will be allowed in the areas from Caledon to Market Streets during the Carnival. “Lances Lance, Daly Street and part of Caledon Street will be used as routes for emergency vehicles

and as drop-off points for disabled persons,” said Greeff. “Although these roads will be closed to normal traffic, provision has been made for delivery collection vehicles for businesses.” Permits will be issued to vehicles and they have to be visible on the windscreen. “We would like to assure business owners and residents that we have taken every possible measure to ensure everyone’s safety during these two days,” said Greeff.

Marist Care’s 17th year of serving the less fortunate <Marist Care St Joseph Outreach to the Poor soup kitchens in Uitenhage are the longest running and efficient soup kitchens operated in town. It was established 17 years ago by Marist Care with the assistance of Joan Blewett (left) and the respective soup kitchen operators. It is supported by local businesses. Strict auditing, dedicated staff and loyal support of local business are the key contributors to its success.

“I could not believe my eyes! Three months ago I wrote a letter congratulating Prince William and Kate on their newborn Prince George. “They replied by sending me a photo of the Royal couple with their baby and it was accompanied by a thank you letter addressed in my name,” said Joseph Jooste from Uitenhage. “My letter must have been one of several millions they received from fans all over the

world. What is absolutely amazing is that they did not regard it as only one of millions, but respected my interest in them and actually replied. “It only took five days since the Royal letter was posted in England to arrive here at my post box in Uitenhage.” In the letter addressed to “Master Joseph Jooste” from Uitenhage the following was written: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were most touched that you took the trouble to write as you did on the occasion of the birth of their son, Prince George. Their Royal Highnesses have been overwhelmed by all the wonderful messages they have received and send you their warmest thanks and best wishes.”

Women in Business to host Christmas market Women in Business has been assisting local business women and hosting free workshops and networking events to both existing business owners as well as women aspiring to own their own businesses in future. “Now we want to launch a community initiative in support of local businesswomen or those running businesses from home, by hosting a Christmas Market in Uitenhage,” said Lilly de Jong from Women in Business. Currently they already have 18 bookings for stalls at the 40 undercover stands situated at the

premises of Georgiou’s Restaurant, 7 Thorn Street, Uitenhage. . No stalls selling food like hotdogs, burgers or curry and rice will be allowed, but confectionery stalls will, however, be allowed such as cupcakes, home made bakes and treats and popcorn. “We are envisioning a monthly market in the future.” The Christmas Market will be held on December 1st and stalls need to be booked before Monday, 25 November. The festive season is synonymous with blood shortages and the South African National Blood Service is appealing to the public to add blood donation to their to-do list, before going on holiday.

“If you are not personally in a situation where blood is required as part of your medical treatment, it is quite hard to imagine how important an adequate safe blood supply is” said Nina van Wyk, Public Relations Practitioner SANBS, Port Elizabeth Branch. In South Africa, a blood transfusion takes place every 39 seconds. “Someone is relying on your willingness to give of yourself, of your blood in order for them to celebrate another festive season or for some, just another day.” Rochelle Momberg (14) from Port Elizabeth was diagnosed with Burkitts Lymphoma Leukemia and told her story during a SANBS media function. “Before I got sick I heard a lot about cancer. What I did not know was that it would change my very own life at the tender age of 13. “During the treatment I received blood transfusions. It made me feel so much better that I called it ‘a can of the best’. I want to thank everyone who donates ‘a can of the best’ as it gave me a second chance in life!” Currently, there is a great need to sign up more apheresis platelet donors. The ideal Platelet donor is someone who regularly donates blood, has good veins, weighs more than 55kg and who has one to two hours to spare for the procedure. Platelet donors can donate as often as monthly whereas normal blood donors can only donate blood every 56 days. The procedure is similar to blood donation but only platelets are harvested and all other blood components are returned to the donor. The shelf life of platelets is only 5 days and therefore the donation of platelets is done on an appointment system only. Polo Cats crowned champs Polo Cats Klawerjas Club once again was crowned the champion team of the South African Klawerjas Board of Control after successfully defending their title for the third consecutive year. KwaNobuhle rugby club promoted Star of Hope is the first rugby club from KwaNobuhle being promoted to participate in the Grand Challenge Shield during 2014. “It’s going to be tough up there and we know exactly what to expect from that league. But we will have to front up and do our best not to disappoint our fans. The club has done very well the past three seasons,” said Timonhy Konki, Star of Hope Rugby Football Club president. The club has been active in rugby pre and post the unification process. Of late, especially during the past five years, it has grown and developed in leaps and bounds. Two years ago the club was play-

ing in the Wellman Harmse (3rd league) and promoted to play in the Adams Cup (2nd league). “We have just been further promoted and will be playing in the Grand Challenge Shield’s 1st B league during 2014.” According to Konki the club is faced with many challenges, one of them being transport. They are currently in the process to seek assistance in this regard. “In this league it will be required from us to travel as far as Graaff Reinet.” The club will have a general meeting at Babs Madlakane Hall on Sunday, 17 November at 14:00. All members and those wishing to join the club are most welcome to attend.

Tau will be here to conduct coaching clinics at the NODEFA and KwaNobuhle Build-It u/13 Football Development Tournament which kicks off at Jabavu Stadium this weekend. Tau’s arrival to Mandela Bay was revealed by KwaNobuhle Build-It owner David Goldberg during his company’s R133 000 sponsorship announcement aimed at putting a spanner to football development at grassroots level at the Keg and Swan Restaurant last Friday. Present during the sponsorship announcement were NODEFA Executive Committee members, SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Regional Secretary Sikhumbuzo Wakashe, VWSA PeoplesPavillion Manager Buyile Gqubule, Nelson Mandela Bay Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Portfolio Chairperson Cllr Nomamerika Magopeni and the Metro’s Director of Sports, Charmaine Williams among others.

Boxing open day An open sports day featuring boxing as well as muay thai fighting will be held on Saturday from 11:00-17:00 at the open area at the corner of John Street and Henrietta Lane in Uitenhage. Organised by Dennis Koen and Yolanda Salim from Mini Gym as well as Philbro Fighting Academy in conjunction with Councillor Kenneth Kohl’s office, this event is all about promoting sport and especially boxing in Uitenhage. According to Koen there will be about 50 local boxers participating. “We want to promote boxing in Uitenhage and show the public what talent there is in town,” said Koen.

“I am happy to be involved in football development to benefit the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Goldberg who has a long history of sponsoring the youth and the senior teams in NODEFA. According to NODEFA president Monde Mhletywa, these tournaments are in line with SAFA’s plans of ensuring that the national teams would be represented in five years’ time by the youth that they identify at tournaments like these. Cllr Magopeni commended Goldberg for putting his money where his mouth is, adding that he hoped residents would continue to support entrepreneurs who were givingback to the community. Retired Professional Soccer League (PSL) referee Gqubule revealed that VWSA would provide a facility for the events related to the tournaments for the the benefit of its partner NODEFA.
