Although the restrictions have been lifted, the municipality is urging residents to continue to use water sparingly given a projected dry season. Certain activities remain prohibited. The Nooitgedacht low level scheme, which will allocate water from the Gariep Dam, will be opera-

tional during October 2012 and fulfil the long term need of the water supply to the municipality. Water tariffs and charges will however increase as from 1st August 2011. The residential water tariff for up to 0.8kl/day is R6.60/kl (1kl = 1000 liter) the next 0.8kl/d will be charged at R8.27/kl In terms of section 31(a) of the Water Services Bylaw, the following restrictive use of water obtained from the Municipality’s water supply system apply:

Lions fun run and cupcakes The Lions 5km fun run, which serves as a charity event, was held in conjunction with the Muirite Striders Neil’s 15km Hillwacht Gravel Travel. “The fun run drew 125 entries from all age groups which is proof that the event is being well accepted by the local community,” said Lions Club president, Bomma Woest. The respective winners were as follows: Men: Mariano Essau, Donald Nell and Juwawe Fletcher. Women: Rochelle van der Merwe, Ameen le Grange and Jamie-Lee McCarthy and Janie Zwiegelaar sharing third position. The Lions and Leo’s Clubs celebrated Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday with 1 871 cupcakes being handed out throughout the Despatch and Uitenhage communities. This include institutions such as retirement homes, mental health homes, primary schools, Provincial Hospital and Oosterland Youth Centre. “This was the third year that the Lions and Leo’s were involved which provided all members and families to contribute 67 minutes to Madiba in the community we serve. “We all owe an extreme debt of gratitude to MegaSave Cash and Carry for their support in making both of the abovementioned events such a success with their donations. “They have also undertaken to commence with various feeding schemes in and around Uitenhage,” said Woest. The Lions president concluded in thanking the Lady Lions and their helpers for their participation with the baking and decorating of the 1 871 cupcakes.

Popular Clover Milk Run and road race On Saturday 30th July 2011, the thirteenth consecutive Clover 10km Milk Run and 5km Road Race will take place starting and finishing at Kings Beach. Apart from being the first race in this region to offer a 2 hour cut-off time, and apart from holding prestige league and participation status, it is also the only 5km distance in the Eastern Cape that is officially recognized by EPA, having its own marshals, time keepers and medals. The total purse is worth R32 000 cash, and just under R30 000 of products will be handed out both on

Friday night and on race day. The first 1 000 people to collect their numbers on Friday will each receive 1l of Clover Milk, and every finisher will receive 1l of Milk as well as an Aquartz water. The school with the most bulk entries will walk away with R1 500 cash, and walkers are welcome. Brian Bands has come to the party again with 5 pairs of shoes for the lucky draws, as well as vouchers. At the media launch, two sealed envelopes were handed to the PEAAC chairman. In these envelopes two average times were se-

lected randomly for each of the races, the 10km and 5km. At the prizegiving after the event, these envelopes will be opened and the two runners closest to his predicted times will each win R2 500. The races start at 07:00 and 07:05 respectively, with the prizegiving at 09:00. There is a secure tog bag area, and refreshments will be on sale on Saturday. Simplicity concert at Allanridge

Simplicity is a vocal group from Uitenhage which was started three years ago with the aim to compose gospel songs that will have an impact on the lives of others in a positive manner. This group of talented young men can be seen in action on Sunday at the Allanridge Civic Centre. “I’ve decided to assist them with ‘Project Simplicity’ an event with great sound, lighting and the best supporting acts in the local music industry, namely Zeal, Confrontation and myself,” said Patrick Lindoor, chief executive officer of The Real Thing music company. On the day of the event the artists will be transported to the

venue in Limousines. They will then follow the red carpet into the hall to their waiting supporters including the Executive Mayor of the Metro, local business people and community leaders. Free transport has been arranged for supporters from Despatch, KwaNobuhle and Lapland. The entry fee to the concert is R30 per person. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality sponsored the venue, plants and other soft services. UD a winning concept from Canada

The success story of the UD News, South Africa’s first and oldest free sheet newspapaer, started more than 40 years ago when Uitenhage was without a local newspaper and had to rely on out-of-town papers for snippets of news and advertising. Canadian Mr Gordon Strevett, immigrated to Uitenhage and put into practice a concept he had brought from his country of origin. The concept was to sell advertising space to local businesses, which in turn he would print and distribute free of charge to households in town. In 1971 Strevett had the paper registered as Uitenhage Despatch Pty. Limited and according to all available records, the UD was the

first free sheet newspaper to be registered in South Africa, making it the oldest knock and drop in the country. Editions average from four to six pages per week and carried an approximate 40% advertisement content. As it has proved itself to be a winning recipe, the policy was of a non-sensational and non-political news content, and this is still being enforced today. During 1975 the UD was sold and the new owners opted to change the news content. Readers and advertisers rejected the new format and disaster was inevitable. The UD was saved when Strevett bought it back in 1976 and gave it a new lease on life by bringing back the old, winning format.

Raised from the ashes, the UD became as popular as ever and soon boasted 8 200 copies a week. In 1981 the paper changed ownership again when Mr Brian Halgreen purchased it. Being bilingual and serving clients in their own language was a big advantage and the UD gained popularity. Nog ‘n groep Suid-Afrikaners, die SA 4x4 UK klub, het ingestem om te help om die koste van die verpakking te dek. Stuttaford Van Lines in Port Elizabeth het ook aan boord gekom en kosteloos die SuidAfrikaanse kant van die verskeping hanteer. HEILIE COMBRINCK ‘n Vrag van 2 500 opvoedkundige boeke uit Engeland het hulle plek op skoolrakke in Despatch gekry! “Dit is verskriklik om te sien hoe al ‘n biblioteek se boeke uitgegooi word. Ek kon dit nie oor my hart kry nie en het gevra of ek dit kan kry. Gou het ek besef dit is heeltemal te veel boeke vir ‘n huis,” het Fanie Swanepoel, ‘n remediërende spesialis gesê. Swanepoel kom oorspronklik van Despatch en was die afgelope sowat agt jaar verbonde aan Globe Academy in Londen waar hy met kinders gewerk het wat leer- en gedragsprobleme ondervind. Dié skool is onlangs oorgeneem deur Absolute Return for Kids Charity wat die geboue gesloop het en die hele biblioteek is met splinternuwe boeke toegerus. Volgens Swanepoel het hy die skoolbestuur vertel dat hy beplan om terug te keer na Suid-Afrika om ‘n sentrum vir buitengewone onderrig in sy tuisdorp, Despatch, te begin. Elderly missing in Despatch

Despatch Police are looking for 72 year old Velile Benjamin Guna who went missing from his house in Khayamnandi on the 29th March 2010. His daughter, Cikizwa Millicent has visited all the family addresses in Kwadezi, but without any success of finding him. The investigating officer visited other addresses where Guna could possibly be, but with no success. Enquiries were also made at all the hospitals and mortuaries in the area, without any positive information regarding Guna. U’hage businesswoman a semi finalist in Mrs PE 2011 HEILIE COMBRINCK Local businesswoman and mother of two, Lynn Liberty, is a semi-finalist in the Kingfisher FM Mrs Port Elizabeth 2011 philanthropic pageant. This annual event for married women residing in Nelson Mandela Bay strives to identify an extra-ordi-

nary woman in the community who will serve and ultimately make it a better place for all. Thus the pagent’s motto: “Inspiring Hope in the Heart of the Community”. “I am positive to become a instrument in achieving my full potential,” said Lynn Liberty. The pageant has no corporate sponsors apart from the broadcast media sponsor, Kingfisher FM, and

it is the duty of each finalist to collect sponsorhips so as to achieve all the functions of the title. Imfundo Project in Malabar is the beneficiary of events organised to give finalists a platform to engage in bringing wholeness to a broken world. The first event will be the Women of Strength Tea held at Fairview Race Course on the 6th August.

On the 13th August a Miss Tinkerbell pageant will be held at the boardwalk for girls from 3 years and older. On the 19th to 21st August the finalists will be serving soup and handing out blankets and clothing in the community. The final event will be the Kingfisher FM Mrs PE gala evening on the 3rd September at the Opera House.

Lynn needs the support of Uitenhage to assist her in successfully contributing to the charity events. What she needs is donations of tinned food, soup ingredients, blankets and clothing. Sewage flooded new shops HEILIE COMBRINCK Sewage flooded the recently opened 160m² liquor shop as well as 250m² electricity sales department of OK Grocer in Market Street last Thursday morning. “At about 08:00 we saw water streaming from under the outer wall into the shops. The smell immediately made us realize it was sewage,” said Mr Ashok Panchal, owner of OK Grocer. Damage to display shelves and stock has not yet been determined, but according to Panchal it could be thousands of Rands. “My biggest worry is what would have happened if the sewage had flooded my shop during the night. Luckily it was during the day and the staff immediately tried to prevent the water from flowing into the grocery shop by using mops and our high pressure cleaner. “A disturbing fact is up until now nobody from the municipality could explain to us what the problem was or what caused the flooding or even apologized for the mess,” said Panchal. Market Street has recently been revamped and beautified with paved walkways and pedestrian road crossings. The newly paved walkway in front of OK Grocer has now been damaged as a result of the huge holes that were dug to try and solve the problem. “There are no barriers or warning signs where they are currently working and a lot of gravel and mud are being walked into our shop. One would expect the municipality to act in a more professional way,” said Panchal.

‘n Inwoner van Mooimeisiestraat in Kamesh het verlede week op ‘n aanklag van dwelmhandel in die Uitenhage hof verskyn. Die polisie in Uitenhage het verlede Dinsdag, vroegoggend die man (54) in hegtenis geneem toe Mandrax ter waarde van meer as R4 000 in sy huis gekry is. Volgens adjudant-offisier Gerda Swart het lede van die Valke lasbriewe gehad om verskeie huise in Kamesh te deursoek. “Die polisie het op inligting van die gemeenskap gereageer en spesifieke huise in die buurt uitgesonder,” het Swart gesê. Om 02:30 het beamptes op die betrokke huis toegeslaan. Daar het hulle ongeveer 80 Mandrax-tablette gevind. Die eienaar van die huis is in hegtenis geneem. Die Valke ondersoek die verdagte ook verder om vas te stel of hy by enige ander misdade betrokke was.

Women can meet Springbok rugby players’ wives CROUCH, touch, pause . . . engage with some of the Springboks’ wives a day before the much-anticipated Tri Nations Rugby match between the Springboks and New Zealand here in Port Elizabeth. While most men are looking forward to this once-in-a-lifetime clash of the titans at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on August 20, there is now also something to look forward to for the fairer sex a day before the game.

A group of women chatted about the upcoming Tri Nations Test in PE and realised that a lot of women are also keen rugby supporters and would also like to get some piece of the action. “Women would like to get to know our Boks’ wives or girlfriends and hear their version of how they live with a national sportsman as a partner, rear their children, manage their careers and their lives – like we all do,” said Michelle Brown, organiser.

Engen Xtreme drivers prepare for race day The mid season break comes to an end on Saturday 6, August as the drivers from the Engen Xtreme Team make their way to Aldo Scribante raceway for the second Engen National Race Day of the season. After their last meeting at Phakisa Raceway, the Engen Xtreme Team look to improve on their performance at the upcoming race meeting. “With the hopes of winning at Phakisa, the team were disappointed not to bring back the results they had hoped for. With an eight week break in the calendar, the team will be hard at work to ensure that they can fight for wins at their home track,” remarked Terry Moss, Team Principal. Engen Xtreme Michael Stephen completed the day in 4th position overall with Tschops Sipuka coming in at a close 6th. The cars took some strain in Welkom having been knocked off circuit a few times and not forgetting the 2 hour endurance race for the Bridgestone Production Cars. Although the Engen VW Polo Cup team ex-

perienced some challenges, they concluded round four with Miguel Pasqualli in 3rd (Masters) and teammate Kosie Weyers in 3rd position. Weyers lies 2nd on the log, just 37 points behind Devon Robertson but will be looking to bridge the gap when they next meet. Spectators attending the action packed race day are urged to go visit the Engen Xtreme Fan chicane, where Engen will be giving away promotional items. The KFC Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity celebrated its immense success at the Garden Court Kings Beach, where charity organisers handed over a cheque to the value of R1 350 000 to its 11 beneficiaries. A total of 65 athletes took part in this year’s Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa on behalf of the KFC Ironman 4 the Kidz, including one of its organisers, Gary Stephenson. “It was a tough race, but the kids’ and crowd’s support really helped me through it”, said Stephenson who thanked the

children of the numerous beneficiaries for their support along the route and for inspiring him to carry on participating in the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa for the Charity. Founding trustee of the Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity Trust, Garth Wright, described what the Charity stands for: “We have a strong belief that every child should receive love, care and hope. We firmly believe that it is not their privilege, but their right.” According to him, athletes’ dedication, discipline and de-

sire to do the Ironman allows the children to identify with and look up to athletes seeing that anything is possible if they dream big and keep hoping. “Even if we make a difference in only one child’s life, it’s worth it”, said an emotional Wright. )The Ironman 4 the Kidz Charity Trust, which to date has raised in excess of R 3, 500, 000 for child-based charities in the Eastern Cape, has announced that its aim for 2012 is set at R 1, 500 000.

Excelsior celebrates 85th year Excelsior Rugby Club this year celebrates its 85th year on the sporting scene in Uitenhage. The official celebration will be held during the weekend of 24-25 September with a sports day at Rosedale Sports Fields and a formal dinner and launch of a book regarding the club’s history at the Jubilee Hotel. In a build-up to the final celebrations, a Curry & Rice afternoon will be held on the 30th July (14:00) at 43 Papegaai Street. Local karateka to Portugal Newman Simakuhle, a 5th Dan black belt karateka from KwaNobuhle, has been invited to participate in the masters division of an international martial arts championship held in Portugal. Simakuhle has the Shodkaikan Karate Club at Babs Madlakane Hall where he teaches about twenty-five young karateka martial arts. He also has a club in Durban with twenty-six members boasting black belts. He is affiliated to the Seidokaikan international

karate association. Simakuhle is the only South African karateka to participate at the event in Portugal. He previously received training in Japan, United States of America and in Russia. “I am hoping to establish my own unique karate style. Nepal as well as Sri Lanka have already indicated to join the style which I am very excited about,” said Simakuhle. The martial arts championships in Portugal will be held from the 30th July to 5th August.

Winterberg Enduro gearingup for action The Castrol Winterberg Enduro, which sees its 36th running on the weekend of 12 and 13 August is the oldest event of its kind in South Africa and will again build on its reputation as one of the most popular enduro races on the national calendar. Despite its humble beginnings, this enduro event has built a rich history and has played a huge role in the development of motorcycle enduro racing in the country. The name of the defending 2010 national enduro title holder, Jade Gutzeit, is the latest in the Castrol

Winterberg Enduro history books. After winning this event in 2003 and 2005, he claimed victory last year with his Yamaha. The “Winterberg” legacy started, however, way back in 1970 when Port Elizabeth Kawasaki dealer, Brausch Niemann, and a group of friends explored a trail in the Winterhoek Mountains north of Uitenhage. The breathtaking terrain in this part of the country was soon adopted as a setting for one of the most spectacular enduro events on the calendar.

These days hundreds of orange day-glo stickers and “candy tape” are used to mark the routes including the special timed stages, but for those earlier Winterberg Enduro events, handfuls of bread flour were used to mark the turns and many of the riders only finish the route after dark owing to there getting lost. Like last year the Loerie area will again play host for the Winterberg event and all the action will take place from the Loerie Ruskamp just outside the quaint little town of Loerie in the Gam-

toos River Valley. This venue will again serve as the start and finish point and the central service point where spectators can also get up close and personal with competitors. The huge success of this unparalleled race is, in no small part, attributable to the Rover Motorcycle Club and its eager organising committee that includes the likes of Ian Mirk, Mike Glover, Pete Fell, the late Graham Maltby, Wayne Petit, Ross Guscott, Geoff Bland, Ian Wright and Chris and Joan Shinn.
