ie Despatch-tak van Solidariteit Helpende Hand is aangewys as die Oos-Kaapstreek se tak van die jaar. Elke streek se tak van die jaar het R5 000 ontvang om vir ’n verdienstelike en fokusgedrewe Helpende Handprojek aan te wend. “Ons gaan die geld vir ons beursfonds aanwend,” sê Theresa Coetzer, die takvoorsitter. “Ons het besef dat ons in opleiding moet belê om regtig langtermynverandering mee te bring. “As ons die R5 000 op kos en klere spandeer, gaan ons betrokkenheid by die gemeenskap net bly by die uitdeel van kos en klere.” Die tak het in die afgelope jaar bygedra om mense se armoede te verbreek deur hulle by te staan om swaarvoertuiglisensies te bekom en so beter werksgeleenthede te kry. Die Despatch-tak is betrokke by armoedeverligting deur vakansieprojekte en Kerspartytjies aan te bied. Die tak onderneem ook hospitaalbesoeke as deel van sy betrokkenheid by die gemeenskap. Taklede het ook die “handtoffel” breiprojek met oorgawe ondersteun. As die tak se bydrae tot armoedevoorkoming het die tak ook deelgeneem aan die nasionale Skooltassieprojek, die nasionale Kosblikkieprojek en ook ’n gemeenskapsbeurs gestig. ’n Plaaslike student het met hierdie beurs haar regsgraad voltooi en staan die tak nou ook op ’n raadgewende basis by.

‘State of Metro’ public meeting in U’hage

The second “State of the Metro” public meeting in Uitenhage will be held tonight at the Indoor Sports Centre and residents concerned regarding issues and the future of the town are invited to attend. “We invite residents, businesses and civil society organisations who have a shared commitment to Nelson Mandela Bay’s future as a winning Metro to join us in discussion,” said Councillor Pieter Terblanche. The meetings serve as a community platform to dis-

cuss the current situation in the Metro and to provide feedback to communities across Nelson Mandela Bay. “We want to hear from the people of our Metro so that we can improve their lives. It is only by engaging with our residents that we can propose sustainable solutions that will address their problems and build a better Metro for all.” The meeting will start at 19:00 and the special speaker will be Councillor Leon de Villiers.

Twenty ladies have joined the YMCA sewing project which is presented on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the United Pentecostal church in Kersogie Street, Rosedale. Transnet pensioners bag another bonus Thousands of Transnet SOC Ltd pensioners, who are members of the company’s pensioner-only funds, will receive an extra R177 million in ad hoc bonuses this November. The Transnet Board of Directors approved the payments to members of the Transnet Second Defined Benefit Fund (TSDBF) and the Transnet sub-fund of the Transport Pension Fund (TTPF). “The latest payment is in addition to total bonus payments of R1,866 billion made by Transnet’s pensioner-only funds since 2007. This confirms the success of efforts by both

the company and the funds to continue strengthening funding positions of the funds,” said Mboniso Sigonyela, spokesman of Transnet SOC Ltd. “Each member or beneficiary will receive a bonus payment of 8,33% of his or her annual pension – an equivalent of a 13th cheque - from his or her respective fund. That the two closed funds - which have no active members - can afford to cover these commitments, is an indication of the strides we, together with the funds, have taken in restoring and maintaining their financial health.”

Cats and dogs looking for homes The Uitenhage SPCA has various dogs and cats which are in need of being adopted by pet-loving people. In facilitating an opportunity for the animals to be granted the chance of being adopted, an open day will be held on Sunday between 10:00 and 12:00. Simultaneously a jumble sale will be held as part of the SPCA’s fundraising efforts. Various stalls will be present at the kennels. The public are invited to support this event. This bonus payment is the second this year for the pensioners. “In effect, our retired colleagues have received two 13th cheques this year. In addition, for some pensioners, this will be a third windfall. Transnet made an ex gratia payment of R70 million in September this year targeting those pensioners with low pensions despite having long service. These payments continue to supplement the current statutory increase of the beneficiaries. They are also intended to ensure that our pensioners’ income tracks inflation,” said Sigonyela.

Speler ewenaar ‘onnie’ se rekord Vir 35 jaar staan onderwyser Francois Anker se rekord van 137 lopies as die meeste aangeteken vir Hoërskool Brandwag se eerste span, maar voortaan sal hy dié eer met ’n kolwer uit die 2013 matriekklas, Wian Duvenhage, deel. Anker het in 1978 toe hy self in matriek was presies 137 lopies teen Muir College op Brandwag se tuisveld aangeteken. Die beurt het veertien sesse en sewe viere ingesluit. Onlangs het Wian tydens Hoërskool Punt se kriekettoernooi ook presies 137 aangeteken. Wian het sy onderwyser se rekord teen Hoërskool Oudtshoorn op hulle tuisveld geëwenaar. Hy het tien sesse geslaan. Dit was sy tweede honderdtal vir Brandwag nadat hy 103 in Oktober 2012 teen Muir aangeteken het. Intussen het Wian ook tuis verwoesting gesaai toe een van sy sesse tydens ’n onlangse wedstryd teen Muir ’n dakteël by East Cape Midlands beskadig het.

ell-known local business woman, Gayle Weidemann and her family have opened the latest and fifth franchise of the Down Town Print & Copy stable in Caledon Street, Uitenhage. “We can provide anything from business cards to big billboards,” says Gayle Weidemann. “With the support of the big Down Town print factory in Central, our products are of the highest quality, finished to perfection and are delivered well within the deadline. “Uitenhage needed a professional local print company that takes its business community seriously.” Gayle is assisted by her husband Anton, daughter Tammy Harding (graphic designer) and son Kyle who although in the education sector, oversees the IT side. From business cards to billboards Down Town Print & Copy offers a range of services that includes digital printing, large format, branding, signage and litho printing. Situated conveniently at 67-71 Caledon Street, the store’s own in-house graphic designer, Tammy, will design anything from party invitations, school yearbooks, company brochures to full, all-encompassing corporate identities. Gayle says that besides the printing of flyers, training manuals and business cards, they are excited about their large format offering. “We can produce beautiful picture canvases, pull-up banners, vinyl stickers, vehicle branding, plan printing, posters and signage. It is also unique for Uitenhage to have a full colour A0 colour scanner. “Here we also offer the more traditional print services like laminating, ring binding, perforat-

VW still preferred brand by car rentals Volkswagen was announced as the best motor manufacturer by car rental and leasing companies in South Africa for the forth consecutive year. The announcement was made at the SAVRALA (Southern African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) gala banquet in Sandton recently. Members of SAVRALA include, amongst others, Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget and Tempest and it represents 90% of vehicle rental and leasing companies in South Africa. It is also the biggest vehicle buyer after govern-

ment with the purchase of over 120 000 new cars annually. Each year SAVRALA members rate vehicle manufacturers and importers that they interact with on matters such as communication, finance (including pricing), technical support, dealer network support and vehicle security. SAVRALA has been bestowing its awards for 19 years. In the 2013 awards, Volkswagen was the biggest winner with six Gold awards, Overall Motor Manufacturer of the Year, Manufacturer of the year – Rental (for the fifth consecutive year) and Manufacturer of

Baseball action in town The Pirates Baseball Club hosted a tournament this past Saturday with juniors from the age of 7 years and older, taking to the field followed by the Pirates B against a Gelvan Invitation team and then the main game between St Peters and Pirates. In the main game, Zallie Lombard, Pirates pitcher, closed the game off in the 5th frame. The batting started well for Pirates as rookie Enrico Nell hit Kurt Geswindt for a homerun. This opened up the game and Hein van Loggenberg and Jacques Langley, all new recruits of the Pirates Baseball Club, cleared the boundary for Pirates, Pirates ending 19-5 victors. Next week Saturday, Pirates take on Park Tigers from Port Elizabeth at 16:00 and it promises to be a game filled with excitement. Pirates field is in Lower Market Street. In Despatch it will be the long awaited game between defending champs Despatch Red Sox vs Gelvan As at 16:00. Nantie Hayward and Lyle Meyer will go head to head and this is the game not to be missed. Array of prizes and CSI support at golf day T

he Afri-Save Open Golf Day, hosted by the Old Muirite Union at the Uitenhage Golf Club, was a huge success with a large entry field and once more proved why it is one of the most popular events on the local golfing calendar. As an Afri-Save initiative supporting the community, Munir Jeeva CEO of Afri-Save, kindly donated R10 000 to Quest School for Autistic Learners, which was gratefully received

on behalf of Quest by Lottie de Vries at the prize giving. Jeeva further kindly committed R10 000 to Muir College Boys High School to be used as a bursary towards the study fees of needy, promising pupils. With more than 200 entrants, including sport celebrities, businessmen, friends and associates teeing off, and an array of great prizes on offer and display, stiff competition,

banter and camaraderie was the order of the day. The first three places in the in the IPS format competition went to E Jonck (42 points), J Benette (41points) and R Loftie –Eaton (41 points). Local golfer Mike Scott was awarded the highest placed Old Muirite Trophy, for finishing in 8th po-

sition overall. The Old Muirite Union Committee would like to extend a special word of thanks to main sponsor Afri-Save, Afri-Save Executive Assistant Roshni Patel, all the other sponsors involved, participants and convenor Clayton du Plooy for making the day a huge success.
