Help bring joy to kids and old folks Christmas is rapidly creeping up upon us and The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is in full swing with its annual Tree of Joy. “The aim is to have approximately 200 or more gifts for less fortunate children or old folks sponsored,” said Clive Hassell from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. The huge Tree of Joy is at Levyvale Spar, where it will be until all the gifts are sponsored. The gifts will then be handed to the various charities for distribution to the already identified recipients. “Gifts are R80 each and the Rotary Club is looking for the ‘Good Burghers’ of Uitenhage to sponsor them as generously as they have done in previous years,” said Hassel. The Rotary members will be at Levyvale Superspar early evenings or at weekends to accept contributions. Donations of any value may also be handed at any time of the business day at Levyvale Superspar. The charities which will receive gifts this year are: Erica House Child and Youth Care; Unathi Crèche in KwaNobuhle; Veronica’s Care Centre (formerly known as Granny Slipper); Huis Minette home for mentally disadvantaged adults; Phaphamani Crisis Centre counselling centre in KwaNobuhle; Innes Street Home shelter for the very poor; S.H.A.R.E. Complex home for disadvantaged children in KwaNouhle; Huis Welverdiend old folks home. (HEILIE COMBRINCK)
Fietsrymarathon vir Jayde se 32ste CARALEE DORFLING Wat die vermoorde Jayde Panayiotou se 32ste verjaardag op 22 November sou wees, sal met ’n 24-uur-fietsrymarathon deur inwoners van Uitenhage gevier word. “Ons is bly die uitspraak is gelewer en dat Jayde se verjaardag vanjaar met die stukkie goeie nuus gevier kan word,” sê Johan Oosthuizen van Fuel on Wheels en die organiseerder van die fietsmarathon. Oosthuizen, wat vroeër vanjaar 1 700 km op ’n fiets afgelê het deur ses dae lank dieselfde roete in Uitenhage 408 keer te ry en sodoende bykans R40 000 vir liefdadigheid losgetrap het, hoop om iets soortgelyk vir Jayde se verjaardag te doen. “Jayde se storie het my en die hele gemeenskap geruk. Sy was baie lief vir diere en sy het baie tyd bestee om honde in die townships uit haar eie sak te voer. “Wat is beter as om haar verjaardag te vier deur haar geesdrif om diere te versorg voort te sit?” het Oosthuizen gesê. Die marathon begin op 21 November om 18:00 by Aalwynrylaan 49 en eindig 24 uur later op Jayde se verjaardag. Hy nooi alle belangstellendes uit om saam fiets te trap. Elke deelnemer en besoeker word gevra om ’n blikkie nie-bederfbare kos of R10 saam te bring, wat ná die marathon aan die plaaslike DBV geskenk sal word. “Dit sal ’n respekvolle rit wees om Jayde te eer, en daarom het ons besluit om die marathon Let’s Live for Jayde te noem.” (Meer op p.3)
