Despatch: multi­billion rand housing development I

n December, the R1-billion first phase of the government-backed Florida Heights integrated housing development will break ground on the outskirts of Despatch.

The scheme – one of the “catalytic projects” identified by the national Department of Human Settlements throughout South Africa – is the first of its kind in the Eastern Cape.

According to the developer behind the project, Sakhisizwe, more than 10 000 direct and indirect jobs will be created during the 5-year roll-out of the housing scheme on a hill overlooking Despatch, along the R367 across the Swartkops River.

Attracting low to middle income residents, phase one will see 1 020 housing units developed alongside community and mixed-use facilities.

Phase two, which is in the planning stages, is set to be completed in about 15 years’ time and will include a further 12 030 residential opportunities.

Florida Heights is set to accommodate approximately 45 000 residents.

“This is a critical and much-needed project for the Bay, and one we are excited to break ground on,” said Sakhisizwe chief executive William Charles, whose company was also involved in the development of the Port of Ngqura.

“As founders and proponents of Sakhisizwe Trust, Sylvia Charles and I have spent many years thoroughly researching integrated developments abroad – especially those in Germany and the Netherlands – and tailoring this project to fit the needs of local low to middle income residents,” said Charles.

The development will be located on 50 hectares of land – 23ha of which will remain undeveloped.

Uitenhage on and off ramp closures ­ take alternative roads The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) would like to notify motorists of road resurfacing taking place on the R75 on/off ramps between Despatch and Uitenhage.

“The road closures are necessary due to the constricted construction area that requires resurfacing. The area that requires resurfacing cannot accommodate both the construction plant and the travelling public safely and therefore requires road closures,” said Mbulelo Peterson, SANRAL Southern Region Manager.

Appropriate traffic accommodation and temporary road signage will be in place.

The following on/off ramps on National Route R75 freeway from Despatch (km 12.6 road marker) to Uitenhage (km 29.1 road marker) will be closed daily from 07:00 until 17:00: .On Thursday, 9 November and Friday, 10 November, the Union Avenue/Caledon Road westbound on-ramp to R75 northbound (to-

wards Kirkwood) will be closed. Motorists may consider using the R75 northbound by travelling on Union Avenue/Caledon Road westbound to Union Avenue/Caledon Road eastbound to R75 northbound on-ramp. The estimated additional travel time and distance is about 1 minute and 1.7 kilometres. .On Saturday, 11 November and Monday, 13 November, the R75 southbound off-ramp will be closed. Motorists may consider travelling to Union Avenue/Caledon Road by travelling via R75 southbound, to Botha Road, to R75 northbound, to R75 northbound off ramp, to Union Avenue/Caledon Road. Road Accident Fund takes services to U’hage The Road Accident Fund will be assisting qualifying road crash victims to register new claims and check their claims status.

The public will also be assisted with general enquiries.

“At the heart of this community outreach is service delivery and making a difference to car crash victims, including everyone affected by the scourge of road crashes,” said Boniswa Matshoba from the Road Accident Fund.

Claimants will be assisted with the direct registering of new claims, consolidation of required compliance documents, settlement

offers, and reporting of cases involving alleged unscrupulous attorneys and touts.

Community members are encouraged to bring their ID documents to the event for enquiries and information on their claim.

“Among other important information which needs to be provided for new claims are case numbers, accident reports, a hospital report, vehicle registrations and details of other parties involved in the car crash,” said Matshoba.

Those who are unable to attend the event are encouraged to visit the RAF at any of the following offices in the Nelson Mandela met-

ropole: Livingstone Hospital (Port Elizabeth); Dora Nginza Hospital (Port Elizabeth); Uitenhage Provincial Hospital (Uitenhage).

“At all times, integrated developments should focus on the users it serves. This approach is fundamentally different from previous planning notions,” said one of the urban designers on the project, Clayton Johnson-Goddard.

“Integrated developments should create neighbourhoods and communities that serve and benefit each aspect of a person’s livelihood – whether it be work, live or play.”

Sakhisizwe is the developer behind the project. According to its chief executive William Charles, this is a critical and muchneeded project for Nelson Mandela Bay. The Bay has a total housing backlog of over 80 000 units, according to the national Housing Development Agency’s technical assessment framework report for the Florida Heights scheme.

Of the development, the agency’s report also outlines intended benefits such as: .Economic growth: “The construction sector will benefit from a development of this scale. The future incomes earned by these employees will translate into spending power benefiting businesses and entrepreneurs, not only in the area but the surrounding economies.” .Traffic: “The existing road network will be upgraded in order to accommodate the additional traffic generated by the proposed development. .Property values: “The area is well located in terms of places of employment and main transportation routes. This will also contribute to secure property values. It can be concluded that the proposed development will have a positive impact on property values in the area.”

The Uitenhage Lions Club, chartered on 16 January 1962, decided to branch out which led to the establishment of the Uitenhage Lioness Club branch.

“Since the establishment of Lions International during 1917, women were only granted membership to Lions Clubs approximately 30 years ago,” said District Governor Tillie Nel. Nel is the first ever woman to be appointed as District Governor in District 410D. She confirmed that the Uitenhage Lioness Club branch is only the 3rd Lion Club in South Africa (District 410) and the first in District 410D consisting of women members only.

Players of ‘72 reunite after 45 years 1972

n what can be termed a first in the history of the Eastern Province Senior Schools Sports Union (EPSSSU), an affiliate of the South African Senior Schools Sports Association (SASSSA), a reunion of the 1972 rugby and netball teams was held recently in Uitenhage.

One of the rugby players of 1972, Abraham Matabata, in an attempt to locate another team member, Clarice Norris, found that he had already passed on a long time ago. This spurred him on to get the other team members together.

A WhatsApp group chat was created, regular informal meetings followed and eventually it culminated in a superbly-organised gettogether.

The first meeting was attended by Matabata together with Stag Mitchell, Ismail Salie, Keith Potgieter, Saliem Wicks, Hennie du Plessis, Fahmy Abrahams and Denzil Petersen.

Soon thereafter they started with arrangements for a reunion of players of 1972, 45 years after having played in a SASSSA tournament at Kimberley. To make it even more exciting, they invited the EP schools netball girls who had accompanied them to the tournament.

“And what an exciting social event it turned out to be when the ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ of 1972, some bald, others grey-haired and stout in stature turned up,” said Farouk Wicomb, a rugby coach of the team of ‘72.

“In some cases players had undergone such a change, that they had to be introduced to one another after not being recognisable.”

Only three of the living members of the rugby squad could not attend. They were Claude Lewis, Gilbert Whitebooi and Desmond Booysen. Also in attendance were the team’s well-known rugby coaches, Farouk Wicomb and Johan Benson.

At the glamorous reunion, Ebrahim Wicomb, former SASSSA rugby convener and Joseph Slingers, a former SASSSA vicechairman, refreshed the players’ memories of the struggle for a non-racial South Africa.

“The question today, however, is still: Are we experiencing what our motto was then…No normal sport in an abnormal society?” said Wicomb.

A thanksgiving and memorial service was led by the 1972 team’s prop forward, Reverend Abraham Matabata.

Added to this highly charged atmosphere, the rugby coaches Farouk Wicomb and Johan Benson brought the house down with raw, emotional speeches remembering the fallen heroes. The grown, hardened men broke down as the Last Trumpet Call was played while the names of their comrades were read out.

As the 1972 EPSSSU members left, homeward bound, some from Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal, Western Cape, Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, there were whispers of “We are Blessed…Thank You… See you in 2019”.

Lions members assist with free diabetes tests Diabetes now kills more people than HIV/ AIDS and cancer together.

“There were approximately 3.5 million cases of diabetes in South Africa in 2016,” says Margot McCumisky, National Manager of Diabetes SA. “Many people with diabetes do not have symptoms, which is why it is important to go for blood glucose testing.

“Early diagnosis of diabetes is extremely important for complications to be prevented or delayed,” McCumisky continues.

The Lions International President Dr. Naresh Aggarwal has called upon Lions and Leos across the globe to carry out activities that address the global diabetes epidemic in the communities they serve.

Free diabetes tests The Uitenhage Lions, Uitenhage Lioness and Leo Clubs have taken up the request and will be conducting free diabetes tests for the community.

They will be held on Saturday, November 11th from 09:00 to 12:00 at Levyvale Superspar in Uitenhage.

“There will be three professional nursing staff assisting in this awareness campaign.

The public is encouraged to participate in addressing this ‘silent killer’ disease,” said Lion President Hein de Vrey.

The free diabetes tests are for all interested.

This is according to Gerhard Kotzé, MD of the RealNet estate agency group.

“Quite simply, these are people who may not be able to afford to buy in the areas where they live and work, but are so determined to become property owners anyway that they are seeking out less expensive areas with a promising future and buying homes there that they may then let to others,” he says.

“In other words, they are often becoming landlords themselves while remaining tenants – which is a new take on the buy-to-let

Father and son tackle ‘Mother of Hard Enduros’ 16 Year old Jason Landman, a Grade 10 learner at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School, will be competing in 50th edition of Africa’s largest and oldest motorcycle offroad event, the Roof of Africa.

It is regarded as the “Mother of Hard Enduros” and is held in the Maluti Mountains in Lesotho from 16-18 November. Jason will be competing in the Bronze Class.

“Entry requirements into the event are strict. Jason had to race the Bronze Qualifier earlier this year in order to qualify for the main event,” said Jacques Landman, Jason’s father, who is also riding the event.

The Roof of Africa is part of the 2017 Red

Bull Hard Enduro Series and the only one hosted in South Africa. It annually attracts top riders both nationally and internationally who race in Gold, Silver and Bronze Classes for top 3 positions.

“For the rest of the riders receiving a finisher medal is considered a victory because man and machine are tested over the 3 days under extremely technical riding conditions,” said Landman.

Riders must complete up to 90km a day in terrain traversing up and down mountain passes. It starts at an altitude of 2 700 metres above sea level and for the rest of the race vary from 1 500 metres in the lowlands to

more than 3 000 metres in the mountains.

“Several deep rivers may have to be crossed depending on weather conditions with daytime temperatures which can be as high as 35 degrees further adding to the challenge,” said Landman.

The event is a navigational race so the rider has to follow the race loop using his own GPS device mounted to his bike to the various way points.

Jason riding his KTM 250 will be supported by his father Jacques. There will definitely be some father-son rivalry expected in this epic “Mother of Hard Enduros”.
