EC last in line, but has most matriculants CARALEE DORFLING DESPITE the fact that the Eastern Cape matriculants are last in the class for the eighth consecutive year, the Eastern Cape Education Department is elated. Mandla Makupula, MEC for Education in the province, expressed his pride and joy over the Eastern Cape matric pass rate of 65,01% at a media conference held last Friday in East London. In 2016, the pass rate was 59,3%. Makupula reckons that the three-year plan of the department to help the matriculants of the province is starting to bear fruit. Owing to this increase, the Eastern Cape, along with KwaZulu-Natal, is the province that improved the most. Of the 67 648 matriculants who had written the matric end examination in the Eastern Cape, 43 981 passed. Two of the new education districts, which

decreased from 23 to 12 in April last year, achieved a pass rate of more than 70%. The Nelson Mandela Bay District has a pass rate of 72,6% and the Sarah Baartman District 71,8%. The matriculants of the Nelson Mandela Bay District also obtained the most distinctions in the province. Makupula divulged on Friday that they asked for help at the Free State Education Department early in 2016. “Last year, and now again, the Free State was the province with the highest matric pass rate. We asked for help and determined that they have been appointing a consultation group for the last seven years to help with promoting the difficult subjects,” Makupula says. Since April last year, the Eastern Cape also used this consultation group to help with improving Mathematics, Mathematics Literacy and Physical Science. Makupula says that he is proud to announ-

041 991 1129 / 922 6378 "And now these three remain FAITH,HOPE,LOVE But the greatest of these is Love" 1 Cor 13:13

ce that there was indeed an increase in the pass rate of these three subjects. The pass rate of Mathematics Literacy increased by 8,3 percentage points to 64,4%, Mathematics increased by 4,8 percentage points to 42,3% and Physical Science increased by 7,7 percentage points to 57,3%. “We cannot be anything else but proud of the increases and the good results. But of course, there are schools that did not do well which we will attend to carefully,” Makupula says. He refers to the Amathole East and Amathole West Education Districts which had pass rates of under 60%. The Isivivane Senior Secondary School, in the Chris Hani West District, is to date the only school in the province with a 0% pass rate. Another Eastern Cape school may also have a 0% pass rate after 14 out of the 15 matriculants, who wrote the examinations at the relevant school, were caught with cell phones, and cheating in the examination venue.

According to Themba Kojana, the Superintendent General of the Eastern Cape Education Department, this incident is being investigated by the national education team and the result will be announced later. Makupula expressed his gratitude towards the other eight education districts, which he feels achieved a good aggregate by maintaining a pass rate of between 60% and 70%. The results are as follows: OR Tambo inland district – 69,3%, Chris Hani West – 67,9%, Alfred Nzo West – 67,3%, Joe Gqabi – 67%, Buffalostad – 65,9%, Chris Hani East – 61,8%, OR Tambo coastal area – 61,7% and Alfred Nzo East – 62,4%. Makupula says it is never nice to take the last position in the rankings. “But when one looks past the pass rate, it is clear that the Eastern Cape achieved more than the last place. “Our province has three times more learners who wrote the examinations in comparison with the Free State,” Makupula says.

Waternood: Damvlakke laagste in agt jaar CANDICE BEZUIDENHOUT

)Meld lekkasies aan by 0800 205 050.

Network problems hamper services at Bay traffic departments

OWING to national network problems, Live Enrolment Unit (LEU) machines at the Korsten Traffic and Licensing Centre are currently processing transactions at a very slow rate, while the machines at the Uitenhage Traffic and Licensing Centre are completely offline. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Councillor John Best, said the municipality had no option but to close the Korsten Traffic and Licensing Centre to ensure that those clients already in the queue were assisted before end of

business on the same day. “We are in regular contact with the national Department of Transport to ensure that they are giving this matter the necessary attention it deserves. “On behalf of the municipality, I would like to apologise to the residents inconvenienced by this unforeseen problem. “We will keep you updated on our municipal platforms and through traditional media channels regarding any new developments concerning services at our traffic and licensing service centres. Thank you for your patience,” Best said.

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) successfully initiated a test case last month to directly pay about 100 social grant beneficiaries using commercial bank accounts of their choice as part of the January 2018 payment cycle. “With effect from February 1, SASSA will continue to make direct deposits into all beneficiary commercial bank accounts. “SASSA has received and confirmed details of the commercial bank accounts of more than 2 million beneficiaries, who are receiving their social grants through banks,” said SASSA CEO Pearl Bengu. The plan will be implemented in an incremental and phased manner leading to a desired future state where SASSA owns, operates and delivers a ‘’one-stop’’ grant administration and payment service. SASSA will continue to pay all beneficiaries who receive their grants at cash paypoints or who use various merchants throughout the country. The SASSA payment card use has been extended until December 31 this year and will be used to access social grants.

U’hage drought: 5 years of below average rainfall Most parts of the Eastern Cape have experienced 2 years of below average annual rainfall, but the South African Weather Service has confirmed that the Uitenhage region has been the worst off with 5 years of below average rainfall. Rainfall over the Eastern Cape for 2017 was generally dry. This is in line with what international climate scientists have been projecting that global rainfall patterns will shift. And these seasonal shifts affect water resources across the planet.

“The seasonal forecast does not look promising with only near normal rain forecast for most of the Eastern Cape,” said Garth Sampson, Client Liaison Officer (Eastern Cape) at the South African Weather Service. “Considering the above and that the dam levels are fast approaching the 25% mark, it is vital that we all conserve water.” According to the weather service, the prolonged period of below average rainfall in areas of the Eastern Cape can be divided as

follows: •East London, Grahamstown, Port Alfred, Port Elizabeth, Patensie and Joubertina have had 2 years of below average annual rainfall (2016-2017). •Graaf Reinett and Cradock have experienced below average rainfall for 3 years (2015-2017). •Mthatha and Somerset East have had 4 years of below average rainfall (2014-2017). •Uitenhage, is the worst off with 5 years’ below average rainfall (2013-2017).

Here are some comparisons of average annual rainfall totals (first figure) and the 2017 actual rainfall (second figure) of towns in the Eastern Cape: Queenstown (442 mm - 550 mm), Mthatha (675 mm - 587 mm), Graaf Reinett (304 mm - 216 mm), Cradock (376 mm - 347 mm), Joubertina (394 mm - 207 mm), Patensie (459 mm - 340 mm), Uitenhage (423 mm - 315 mm), Port Elizabeth (616 mm - 494 mm), Port Alfred (585 mm - 485 mm), Grahamstown (523 mm - 504 mm), East London (834 mm - 807 mm).

VLV vroue hoor meer oor vleise Die Vroue Landbou-vereniging se plaaslike Carpe Diem-tak vergader volgende Donderdag waartydens daar gesels sal word oor verskillende vleissoorte. )Vir meer inligting bel Marie Niemand by 041 966 2369.

-HEILIE COMBRINCK

Rotary bursaries for post matrics The Rotary Club of Uitenhage’s Education Trust wishes through the granting of bursaries to assist needy students, who reside in Uitenhage or Despatch, to obtain post matric qualifications at any recognised South African tertiary institution. Students who have obtained at least 60% in their matric examination, or students who are at present studying at a tertiary institution may apply. Applicants are advised that additional financing may be necessary as the bursary

from the Rotary Trust may not be sufficient to cover all fees for the year. Bursary application forms are available at the UD News office, 73A Graaff Reinet Road, Uitenhage. The deadline for applications is 7th February 2018. Send completed forms to: The Convener, Educational Aid Trust, 30 De Jongh Drive, Uitenhage 6229; or they can be handed-in (in an envelope) at the UD News office. SPECIAL THANKS TO PROF KULA Lizzelle 46yrs from Graaff Reinet, thank you Prof Kula for helping my family, my son was a drug & alcohol addict for yrs & I tried a lot of healers and prophets but all failed until I saw Prof Kula's advert in the newspaper. He came to our house and performed his spiritual prayers which chased away all evil and demons which was destroying my family. Prof Kula used his magic rats & short boys to bring money into our house that same night. With his powerful miracles he prayed for us and our marriage is better now and peaceful. All thanks to Prof Kula again. Please contact him should you have any problems. You pay after the job has been completed successfully or visit him in Port Elizabeth. Call or Whatsapp 063 383 6452

FOCUS ON: WATER SAFETY FOCUS ON:

What to do in a drowning emergency REPORTER FOR South Africans, summertime spells fun, sunshine and outdoor activities involving water sports and swimming. However, it can unfortunately also be a time fraught with tragedy for those who are inexperienced, unable to swim and who may for some or other reason be vulnerable to drowning. David Stanton, head of clinical leadership at Netcare 911, said that emergency medical service providers, such as Netcare 911, tend to receive more calls related to drowning and water-related emergency incidents during December and January than any other months. “In any emergency situation, the most important thing to do is contact the correct emergency number immediately. Try to memorise the number for the emergency services in your area and keep the number saved on your cellphone and close to your landline telephone,” Stanton said. He said in many cases, during the panic of a medical emergency, people cannot remember the correct number or cannot find where they have written it down. “In such cases, one can contact Netcare 911 on the national number 082 911,” Stanton added. Experts at athletics coaching in U’hage Leading South African 400m hurdler LJ van Zyl is one of several experts imparting knowledge and advice at the Bestmed Madibaz Athletics Club coaching courses at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in Uitenhage this week. The series for coaches and athletes consists of courses in three categories, to be held simultaneously. It includes the coaching clinic or either the ASA Level 1 or Level 2 coaches’ course. Van Zyl, who is targeting a fourth appearance at the Commonwealth Games this year, is joined by experienced Pretoria coach Hugo Badenhorst and former national middle-distance runner Ilze Wicksell at the course, where they assist coaches and athletes. Badenhorst, who specialises in jumps, has been involved with athletics in Gauteng North for more than three decades and is chairman of the Athletics SA coaches’ committee. Wicksell ran for South Africa from 1980 to 1983 and again at the African Championships in 1993. She holds the national record for the

1 000 metres. Madibaz athletics manager Nellis Bothma said they were delighted to have the trio at the clinics. “It is really great to have high-profile athletes and coaches such as these to assist our coaches and athletes in the Eastern Cape,” he said. The 32-year-old Van Zyl said he was relishing the chance to interact with coaches and athletes to possibly inspire the next generation. A Bestmed brand ambassador, the SA 400m hurdles record holder has been included in the preliminary SA team for the Commonwealth Games. He won a gold medal and two silvers at previous Games meetings. Van Zyl added that his main objective at courses such as the one in Uitenhage is to motivate young athletes to achieve their dreams. “If I can hook just one hurdler, who, maybe in five years’ time, excels in an international event and can look back and say ‘I attended a Bestmed Madibaz coaching clinic in Uitenhage and LJ van Zyl inspired me to go on with

athletics’, that would be fantastic.” His main message to aspiring athletes is that there is no substitute for hard work. “There is no other way to success besides training every day. “To get to the top you have to make a massive sacrifice, but that’s part of being an athlete.”

Iconic steam train renamed and back on track

T took seven years to accomplish, but this holiday season the iconic Apple Express was back on track, albeit only for a period of three weeks along a shortened route and sporting a new name. The steam train, which last took to the tracks in 2010 and subsequently fell victim to copper thieves, was launched again at the end of last year with its locomotive sporting a bright red jacket and a new name. The relaunched narrow gauge steam train made its first trip on December 26, carrying passengers between Kings Beach and the Port Elizabeth Airport. The last two scheduled trips for the festive season, which at time of going to print on Wednesday, were already fully booked, will take place this Saturday and Sunday. “In future, the train will be named the Nelson Mandela Bay Steam Train,” said Andrew Whitfield, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture at the media launch.

Nerina Skuy, CEO of the Apple Express Rail Company, said the relaunch of the steam train was due in great part to the efforts of the volunteers, with many years of experience, who ensured that the train is preserved for future generations. “The train will now be used to boost development for the future of the metro,” said Skuy. The relaunch was aimed at looking at the feasibility of running the train in the future. “We are very grateful for the overwhelming reaction from the public,” said Skuy According to Whitfield, the first phase to get the wheels rolling again cost R2 million. This enabled the train to offer an hour-long ride from Kings Beach to the Port Elizabeth Airport. “But with phase two the train will ride all the way through Walmer township to the Baywest Shopping Centre,” said Whitfield. Discussions will be held with the residents of Walmer Township about the project before work is started on the track in the township. There are also plans afoot to build a platform for passengers at the Baywest Shopping Centre.
