U
itenhage’s historical Howitzer field gun, has survived many “battles” without having to fire a single shot in anger. Its latest “battle” is the uncertainty as to where it should be moved, as the property it stood on has been sold. It stood at the Moth Garden of Remembrance adjacent to the Moth Hall
in Rich Street. This property has been auctioned off by McLaggan’s last month and thus no longer belongs to the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth). Eben Beckley, a former Parks Manager at Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, said it is time for the Howitzer to return to Cannon Hill where once it was one of five cannons on the hill. “This Howitzer field gun was given to the Uitenhage Council after World

War I and placed at Cannon Hill on the northern side of the monument,” said Beckley, whose late father-inlaw, Cyril Carter, took pictures of the Howitzer at Cannon Hill. According to The Lions souvenir book of Uitenhage, published by Lions Uitenhage (1973), the Howitzer was later moved to the Moth Garden of Remembrance. This move was during 1954, according to the late historian and researcher Jean van Onselen in her book Cannon Hill Uitenhage, 1804. Mike Soutter, the Provincial Adjutant of the Eastern Cape Provincial Dugout said, “at the moment we are not quite sure, but the Howitzer will be relocated to Moth property. Either to the Moth Memorial Centre which is a museum in Newton Park or to the Garden of Remembrance at the Moth Exservicemen’s Cottage Association in Walmer. “If it goes back to Cannon Hill it will get vandalised and abused. “Therefore it will more than likely go to the ex-servicemen’s cottages because there it will be a lot more in the open for people to see and it will also be safe.” During 2013 scrap metal thieves struck at the Moth Hall and the Howitzer encountered another “battle” when it was pushed off its pedestal. The thieves battled to move the approximately 6 tons of metal and at last abandoned their plan to have it traded as scrap metal. )Apart from the Howitzer, the Moth Garden of Remembrance is also the burial site of the first South African-born soldier to receive the Victoria Cross for bravery. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Crowe hailed from Uitenhage and joined the British army.

Feesgangers het gesê hulle wil graag naby die vliegtuie kom en met vlieëniers gesels,” sê Kruger. Vir die eerste keer by die fees kan besoekers ook ritte geniet in ’n ligte vliegtuig, gemotoriseerde sweeftuig en helikopter. 4x4 Nasionale uitdaging Die 4x4 baan is nog dieper en méér uitdagend gemaak en sowat 60 deelnemers van regoor die land het reeds ingeskryf om aan die nasionale uitdaging deel te neem. ’n Addisionele baan is ingerig vir kommersiële 4x4 voertuie waar bestuurders hulle vernuf kan toets. “Op die nuwe baan kan mense hulle gewone 4x4 voertuie vir ’n spin vat. Toyota’s kan die Amarokke uitsleep of Ford’s kan hulle altwee uitsleep as hulle nie in ’n Land Rover se olie gly nie,” spot Kruger. Nog ’n nuutjie by vanjaar se karre-envliegtuigfees is ovaalbaanmotors wat ’n paar truuks van dié motorsport gaan wys.

Vliegkuns ’n Asemrowende vliegkuns-vertoning sal deur Patrick Davidson tussen 12:00 en 13:00 gelewer word. Book launch
The publication of the first guide to the “Features and Creatures of our Algoa Bay Hope Spot” was produced thanks to funding received from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The launch of the book will be hosted by Fogarty’s Bookshop and will take place at the GFI Art Gallery in Park Drive on Tuesday 17 April at 17:30 for 18:00. The event is free and open to all. “We want the youth of our surrounding areas to unite and stand together in fighting these forces affecting us. Youths understand each other better and as a youth forum we want to focus on the good things in our community and to take responsibility,” said Diane Jansen, chairperson of the Kamesh CPF Youth Forum. Members of the forum last week visited the children’s ward at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital as part of their Easter Joy Run outreach. They also visited the Kabah Clinic as part of their outreach. According to Sergeant Nontuthuzelo Sibaca-Selani, Kamesh CPF Youth co-ordinator, the main aim is to address crime where the youth is involved and that it should be done by their peers. “This is being done by means of our programmes and awareness campaigns. These programmes include drug awareness, teenage pregnancies and the fight against crime,”

It is not that these members are police informers or impimpis, it is about addressing social ills and bringing positive change in our community.” According to Jansen, the Kamesh Youth Forum is open to all of the youth in the suburb’s surrounding areas. “We encourage youths to join us and help to make a difference and to gain life skills. Also to meet new people and to bond with and assist the men and women in blue who look after our safety,” said Jansen. Say ‘no’ to plastic and help save marine life P
lastic bags are the most common garbage item and the single most polluting item responsible for killing marine life. Therefore SPAR Eastern Cape has declared war on plastic bags and spearheads a significant step forward in the battle to protect the environment. With hundreds of millions of shopping bags in circulation, SPAR EC managing director Conrad Isaac said they could no longer ignore their accountability in what was becoming an increasingly harmful situation in the world. “As the biggest food retailer in the Eastern Cape, I believe we have to take care of the health and wellbeing of the communities in which we operate.” He said it had reached a situation where something tangible had to be done. “If we carry on in this way and don’t do something about the mess we are creating it can only lead to the eventual destruction of our environment. “So the dream is to clean up the place and to work towards creating a healthy and fresh environment in which we can live.” Facing a massive challenge to change the consumer’s mind-set, SPAR EC encourages shoppers to use the SPAR paper bags rather than the plastic bags. These are wax-lined, waterproof reusable bags, capable of carrying

12kg. Having long been involved in the fight against pollution, Zwartkops Conservancy environmental manager Jenny Rump was full of praise for SPAR EC’s decision to take this initiative.
“We are over the moon with their passion for the project and this is a much-needed wake-up call,” she said. The problem with plastic, she added, was that it was not biodegradable and, consequently, it never disappeared.
Focus: ‘NMB prosperous future’
‘Old’ SASSA cards valid until December 2018 The South African Security Agency (SASSA) “old” cards are still available until 31 December 2018. Grant recipients are however encouraged to swap the old SASSA card for a new one between April 1st to September 30th
(2018) at their nearest Post Office, SASSA office or designated venue. Grant recipients may also choose to receive their social grant through their own SASSA account or personal bank account, including Postbank. Cash payments will be phased out in the future.
“All that happens is that it breaks up into smaller and smaller bits called micro plastic. “Meanwhile the bigger pieces of plastic are eaten by animals who think it is food and more and more marine animals are being found with plastic in their stomachs. “There was this tragic example of a whale found dead on an England shore. When they dissected it they found a huge amount of plastic tied all around its gut, which caused it to die.” Isaac said they understood old habits would be hard to change. “But we are inviting our consumers to join us in solving what is a very real problem in our society. “To those consumers who have a concern and appreciate the enormity of the problem, we will be offering alternative options of shopping bags in all our stores.” He added that he foresaw the campaign evolving into a far bigger project than just plastic bags, one that would eventually incorporate the collection and recycling of all plastic. “For now we are focusing on plastic shopping bags, but if we can change the habits of the communities over time we will be contributing to a cause with real benefits for our society.” - REPORTER

Apart from the main event on Sunday, two other events, namely, the Isuzu Corporate Triathlon Challenge and Spur IRONKIDS will take place on Saturday, April 14. The day will start with a 3.8km swim course beginning at Hobie Beach, whereafter athletes will head out parallel from the pier, turning left after 300 metres. The course then goes past Humewood Beach all the way to Kings Beach before turning and heading back towards Hobie Beach. The bike course takes athletes out on two flat, fast laps of 90km on one of the most spectacular bike courses on the IRONMAN circuit. The route takes athletes along the coast at Marine Drive, delivering sweeping views of the ocean and the rugged coastline before moving slightly inland at Seaview on an undulating scenic countryside section. Athletes return along the coast to the transition area to start the run. Nelson Mandela Bay will also host the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in September. In preparation for this event, Heugh Road was recently upgraded. At the time of going to print on Monday, Garth Sampson from the PE branch of the South African Weather Service predicted that the weekend’s weather would be generally cloudy with showers.
