Local body builder heads for Romania HEILIE COMBRINCK
A
t the age of 12, Lionel Martin started training with weights, dreaming of one day becoming a champion. This dream recently came true as he was crowned South African body building champion and is now heading for the world championships. Martin participated in the International Federation of Body Builders South Africa event which was held in Mpumalanga. He was crowned the SA champion in the category for men under the age of 40 and in the weight category of under 75kg. “This was my first time competing on national level. I am very excited and am looking forward to representing South Africa at the world champs in Romania,” said Lionel Martin, owner of Swannies Gym in Uitenhage where he is a full time fitness trainer. Champion body builders from across the globe, including Martin, will be heading to the city of Bistrita in Romania, where the 2017 IFBB World Junior & Masters Championships will be hosted from 10th to 13th November. Martin will be part of the South African Body Building team comprising 19 body builders. They will depart for Romania on November 7th. Although exercising and fitness have been part of his life, Martin seriously started with body building eight years ago. He previously played rugby for Progress as well as for Uitenhage Police. “I wish to thank all who supported me and also a big thank you to my sponsors. They all played a part in this highlight of my sporting career,” said Martin. Martin has been invited to the 2018 Arnold

onships, an evening of fun and dance will be held on Saturday at the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre at 19:00. Les Simons as well as Children in Christ will be the performing artists. )Tickets are R150 per couple (two course meal included) and are available from Lionel 079 289 2446 or Michelle 082 812 2590.
P. 12 Career expo to ‘Improve your future’ HEILIE COMBRINCK In order to make a positive difference in the lives of learners and the community, a career expo will be hosted by John Walton Senior Secondary School in collaboration with the Kamesh Community Policing Forum. “With the theme of ‘Improve your Future’ we aim to bring information regarding careers to our community, to show them that dreams and visions do not end when you leave school,” said Leigh Damons from John Walton Senior Secondary School. All matriculants, Grade 9 learners (as well as their parents or guardians), and also unemployed youths are invited to explore avenues of reigniting their career aspirations. Various institutions will be present and attendance is free. “The career expo is for our people to realise that there are so many opportunities. For example there is much more that the South African Police Service offers than just to be a police officer. Or that being employed at Volkswagen offers array of job opportunities and really does not mean just working shifts in a factory,” said Damons. According to her the career expo was initiated owing to the current socio-economic challenges in the community. (Continue on p. 2)

Investigation after Metro cop was arrested The Metro Police of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality took swift action when it became apparent that one of its officers was arrested. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police Chief Yolanda Faro implemented steps to effect the suspension of a Metro cop pending an internal investigation following the arrest of the officer. It is alleged that the man was involved in the commission of a crime. “We see this matter in a very serious light as we will never condone criminal activities that bring our metropolitan police force and ultimately the Nelson Mandela Bay Munici-
pality into disrepute,” said Yolanda Faro, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police Chief. “I already informed human resources that an immediate suspension is required pending the outcome of our investigation. “We were informed that the Uitenhage South African Police Services received a complaint of attempted theft out of a motor vehicle. While the police were on patrol, they noticed a white Polo with three occupants that corresponded with an eyewitness description of the suspect vehicle and stopped it. “A search of the vehicle resulted in the dis-
covery of implements that could be used to break into vehicles and they were arrested. The driver of the vehicle was identified as a Metro police officer,” said Faro. Acting Executive Director for Safety and Security, Shane Brown, said there is no hesitation on the part of the municipality to act against corruption or lawlessness especially if it emanates from among own ranks. “It is unfortunate that a very successful security force up to this point, had this setback, but it is even more important that we act without hesitation. “We would like the public to report any in-
stances of corruption or criminality to us and it will be investigated,” Brown said. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security John Best applauded the action of the Metro Police Chief and said Faro continues to show exemplary leadership. )In another incident a Nelson Mandela Bay motorist landed in hot water after attempting to bribe a Metro police officer with R100 and a cool drink, when it was discovered at a checkpoint that he was driving without a driver’s licence. The 29-year-old driver was arrested for bribery and corruption. -REPORTER

Youth and parents invited to career day HEILIE COMBRINCK A career expo with the theme “Improve your future” will be hosted in Uitenhage at John Walton Senior Secondary School. This will be the second consecutive year that a career expo will be held at John Walton Senior Secondary School. “We want to ignite passion and dreams in our youth,” said Leigh Damons from John Walton Senior Secondary School. “They should not just accept the current economic situation and depend on a government grant, but should broaden their knowledge as to what is available out there.” Apart from learners, parents, aunts, un-
cles and even grandparents are encouraged to come along with their youngsters to find out more about career opportunities. Grade 9 learners are invited to attend as well. In coming months they will have to select the subjects they want to pursue from next year until they write their final matric exams. While making the call of subject choice is an exciting exercise for some, others struggle with the commitment, especially when they are not yet sure what they want to study after school. The career expo will be held tomorrow from 09:00-14:00 at the school’s premises. )For more information contact John Walton school on 041 988 1101.

Long-awaited public transport system ready to roll THANDI SETOKOE
N
ELSON Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Athol Trollip, has said that the long-awaited Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) will be launched at the end of the month. Trollip was speaking at the launch of Transport Month outside the Cleary Park Shopping Centre last week on Tuesday. The postponement of the roll out date for the bus system followed several years of delays in getting the project off the ground.
Speaking at the launch, the mayor said, “Transport Month is a time when we as service providers need to apply our minds on how we can make sure that people commute safely because more and more people are commuting and fewer people are owning motor cars.” The first roll out would service the Cleary Park routes. The project would eventually expand to other parts of the city such as Motherwell, the Wells Estate route and Uitenhage. “The Njoli route is the next route that we have identified and we are making great progress there with the taxi associations,” Trollip said. ess of empowering 100 taxi operators through code 8, code 10 and code 14 licences. “The selection process was done through recommendations from the taxi associations.” He added that the municipality is also negotiating bursaries with the Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) to train students so that they can also become part of the project. “The transport sector is a growing sector, especially the public transport sector. “We intend to skill our youth because we understand that in order to have a growing economy, we must have an educated society,” he said. With the hope of creating more opportunities with the growth of the integrated transport system, the mayor said, “Taxis will play a destination role in the city for a long time, but as we roll out the IPTS, we’re hoping that more people will make use of the system.”

Rano Kayser described the purpose of the IPTS as threefold – reliability, cost-effectiveness and safety. “Each bus will have a video camera monitoring the bus, which is linked to the operational centre at the fire station. “We are going to keep track of every movement of the bus.” If all goes according to plan, the buses will start operating by the end of the month when drivers are expected to receive their code 14 driver’s licenses. “It’s critically important that whoever is driving these buses is qualified to do so because it’s all about safety while commuting. “So, people need to know that they are going to get on to a bus that is driven by a competent, certified person because if there’s an accident and that person is not qualified, then there’s a massive problem,” Trollip explained. Kayser said they were currently in the proc-

Large labyrinth in Elands River Valley HEILIE COMBRINCK
T
he Elands River Valley near Uitenhage boasts one of the largest labyrinths in South Africa. Labyrinths are ancient and date back to more than 4 000 years ago. A labyrinth is cleverly designed for walking a relative long distance in a condensed circular form. It is said that this symbol is ideal for meditation or prayer walks and that it helps to naturally quiet the mind, enhance feelings of calmness and peace. That is to say, if you are walking and doing it the right way! “A labyrinth is not a play park or something to do for the fun. It actually represents the path of life, a journey to our own centre and back again out into the world,” said Carina Erasmus from The Herbal Labyrinth Uitenhage. Labyrinth walking distance: 1.3 km The local labyrinth actually was the result of a dream that Carina’s mother, Charmaine Lesch, had. The mother then together with her three daughters designed and built the labyrinth. They have carefully placed each stone, all of which were collected from the area, to form this complicated design which has a diameter of 48 metres. “The centre of a labyrinth represents our own centre. The centre to self, a place we all have access to but, we unfortunately don’t always know how to reach,” said Carina. Apart from the spiritual experience, The Herbal Labyrinth Uitenhage was also designed to be a source of most known herbal

The mother and daughters wish to thank Ettienne and Sandra Petzer for granting them the opportunity to create the labyrinth. When all are completed, The Herbal Labyrinth Uitenhage will host herbal tea parties, planting workshops, herbal medicine workshops and herbal educational events. T
here is a local praiseworthy volunteerdriven service that people are ignorant about, until the day they so desperately need their support. This service is the Reach for Recovery breast cancer support group. Tania Naude, a breast cancer survivor said, “When Reach for Recovery volunteers visited me in hospital, they brought calm to me and the knowledge that I was not alone. With their help I did not only survive, I survived with dignity.” All volunteers dealing with breast cancer patients, have to be breast cancer survivors, as they understand the emotional and psychological needs of the patient. These volunteers are trained according to Reach for Recovery International standards. Volunteers assisting with fund-raising or logistics need not to be breast cancer survivors. “We as volunteers deal with the emotional aspects and see that breast cancer patients are fitted with prosthesis after a mastectomy. They still are women and need to feel like a woman,” said Estelle Botha, chairlady of Reach for Recovery Uitenhage. “When diagnosed with breast cancer the first emotional aspect to deal with is shock. Secondly we deal with the patient’s denial. They often think and say, no, it can’t be me, this is not happening to me. Eventually it becomes a spiritual issue, where they start blaming God and bargaining with God. “We know this path and therefore we are there for support. When they come to the point where they actually accept having breast cancer, that is when the process starts of a mastectomy and the way forward.” Prosthesis to indigent women Reach for Recovery also provide a prosthesis service to indigent women who cannot afford reconstruction post a mastectomy. This silicone prosthesis help to restore the self-image and confidence after the traumatic breast cancer surgery. The Reach for Recovery Uitenhage branch was established in 2007 by the late Maureen Deysel. Estelle Botha took over from Deysel

PHOTO:HEILIE COMBRINCK and was elected as chairlady, a position she has held for the past 10 years. She later was joined by volunteers Cathy Godwin, Rachel Brinkhuis, Sally Seekoei and Rose Kayi. Currently the local Reach for Recovery has only eight volunteers of whom three ladies (Estelle Botha, Rachel Brinkhuis & Eleanor van Niekerk) are trained to deal with breast cancer patients. They have to service a large area stretching as far as Jansenville, Steytlerville and Graaff Reinet. “We over the years battled to keep the office going but with the help from the local community and donations from the Rotary Anns and Uitenhage Bowling Club, we were able to do the work that we do best,” said Estelle Botha, chairlady of Reach for Recovery Uitenhage. “We urgently need more volunteers. It is a huge sacrifice and women should be passionate to do this, to offer to give without being asked or obliged. “Also, this is a voluntary service, there is no salary or payment. It is a humanitarian
service,” said Botha. According to her the main aim of fundraising efforts is to cover the costs of prosthesis, drainage bags, softies and operational costs like fuel and administrative expenditures. They currently are in need of a laptop. Bra Drive Volunteer Jacky Sharp started with a Reach for Recovery Bra Drive a few years ago. This contributed immensely in providing bra’s to fit silicone prosthesis which were donated to women who could not afford it. “It is very important to wear the right bra. There should be no wiring, it should have broad shoulder straps and it should be a crossyour-heart bra,” said Jacky Sharp, a Reach for Recovery volunteer. Reach for Recovery receives no state funding. It is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation and as a Non-profit Organisation. )To find out more about Reach for Recovery Uitenhage, call Estelle Botha on 083 650 6200.

It is estimated that lifestyle changes could reduce breast cancer rates by about 30%. Changing your lifestyle includes being more active, maintaining a healthy weight, including beneficial nutrients in your diet and reducing carcinogens (cancer causing molecules). Two large studies in Canada and America with over 115 000 participants between them, showed a reduction in risk of between 22% and 31% in women who followed standard dietary guidelines. Being overweight or obese carries an increased risk of Breast Cancer. The good news is that weight reduction of as little as 5% of your body weight can reduce risk by 25%. The other good news is that you are in control. Your doctor or dietitian can assist you in setting a realistic weight goal. There seems to be a lower rate of breast cancer in individuals who eat a lot of Omega-3 fats. These are found in oily fish such as sardines, pilchards, salmon, trout and tuna.

My
In 2010 is Chezane ’n 5-jaar kontrak aangebied by Select Music. Chezane se CD-bekendstelling word Saterdagaand by Die Blou Ballon op Despatch gehou. Die album bevat 15 snitte waarvan 11 oorspronklike liedjies is. Chezane se debuut-album is beskikbaar by Westway Cafe, Toys & Teas Coffee Shop and Toy Museum en ook die aand van die bekendstelling by Die Blou Ballon. )Vir meer inligting oor optredes bel haar by 083 397 2579.

upcoming exams, here are some tips: Plan ahead Don’t leave things to the last minute. Start studying and you will feel more confident. Study notes Make them super colourful, friendly and bright. Often the things we need to revise can seem repetitive and bland and it helps to separate headings, paragraphs and categories by using bright colours or pictures so that your mind is stimulated creatively. You’ll probably find that you’re able to remember more things by associating key words and important facts with colours and pictures. Eat right Avoid caffeine or things that are high in sugar. You might think that foods which are high in energy will help you study better, but they’re really just short term fixes and they’re likely to make other important things such as sleep and fatigue a bigger long-term problem. Omega 3 is great for the brain so stick to foods that give you enough
X1U0PYJW-UD121017
of your daily vitamin and mineral requirements. Sleep Students often tend to stay up until ridiculous hours in an attempt to cram in as much information as possible. Pulling all-nighters and depriving yourself of sleep during exam time is possibly the worst solution when it comes to effective learning. It’s far better to stick to a healthy sleep routine to enhance memory and brain-functions so that you actually remember the things you’ve been studying hard for. Turn off all electronic devices 30 minutes before bedtime and relax your mind before you go to sleep. Relaxing music can help you study better Music can elevate your mood and create a sense of calm if you’re listening to the right tunes. Classical music is said to be a great way to restore your mind’s concentration levels while getting into rhythm with whatever it is you’re trying to study. Take a short break from studying every now and then and try to rest your mind with music. Relaxation is a key factor when revising for exams. (-Parents24)

ARE YOU FRUSTRATED AND DEPRESSED FINANCIALLY (DON'T lose faith, give Prof Hope a try)
Strongest Healer
My name is Reuben, am 48 years old, I stay with 4 children, for a very long time there was no happiness in my life, even my wife left me because I couldn't support my own family. I had to look after my parents. I was the only breadwinner in our family and I was working as care giver. I struggled financially my kids needed school uniforms, my parents needed help with basic needs as they are elderly. I visited different pastors, prophets and traditional healers with no one could help me. I wasted all the money, but no results, I just kept losing the little I had. I was helpless for many years, until I read a testimony of Gabriel who was testifying the good work Prof Hope did to change his life by using Short boys to put money into his account. I made an appointment with him he explained to me all the options like money rats to put money in the house on same day, short boys to put money in your Account on same day, magic ring to win money games like gambling, casino, lotto and betting. Magic wallet to multiply your money. I chose money rats to put money in my house. He explained to me the process, I couldn't believe when I received the money on the same day. I immediately contacted him and paid him 25% and my sister chose magic ring for lotto and we are financially stable, all thanks to Prof Hope. Also helps with: bring back lost lover, family matters, bring back stolen goods, bind your property, male enlargement. Home visits AROUND Eastern Cape.
