In the past couple of weeks, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has been made aware of social media messages that have been circulating about construction jobs that are allegedly sold by persons in- or outside the employ of the CDC, purporting to be representing the CDC. The CDC views these allegations in a serious light. In a statement issued the CDC said, “The CDC would like to reiterate that under no circumstances will job seekers be asked for money in the prerecruitment and post-recruitment processes. “Since one of our four values is integrity, we ensure that in all our processes, we adhere to and promote good corporate governance, honesty and transparent practices. “Therefore, we have zero tolerance for fraud and corruption. The CDC would like to proactively encourage all its employees and broader stakeholders to report any such activities.” The CDC urges those with information about the matter to contact the CDC’s anonymous tip-off line on 080 000 7035 or fraud@kpmg.co.za.

Rotarians support needy causes T

hroughout the year The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, and its Anns support many needy causes, but they also each choose one local charity to receive a major donation. The Rotary Club held a fundraiser charity golf day and a cheque for R30 000 from the proceeds was handed over to The Mula Project, a recycling scheme which is run at Allanridge Community Hall each Wednesday from 13:00 onwards. Children from the area are encouraged to bring plastic and cardboard which they have collected by cleaning their local areas. These are weighed and the children are rewarded with “Mula” points, which they can then spend on a wide range of items, which are mainly basic food essentials, but also items of warm clothing or school necessities. Each child is then also given hot soup, bread and fruit. Although some funds are generated from sale of the plastics, the reward items are of considerably more value. The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South identified the charity as one which has a far greater ongoing benefit to the community than just handing out “freebies”, hence this major donation. Anns’ knitting project For their project the Anns of the club, together with the help of many community members have had very busy hands. Their major project has been to knit 100 jerseys and 120 beanies. The challenge often remains to find a deserving charity, but this year that was not such a major problem. The huge pile of knitted items was handed to Mr Brian O‘Reilly who in turn, through a well established network, distributes the jerseys and beanies to various organizations or deserving people. (-Heilie Combrinck)

Help set new blood donation world record

onating the most units of blood in one day by a town is the title category that Engen Penford in Uitenhage has applied for. This is an attempt to set a new Guinness World Record! The attempt to set the record will take place on Friday, October 6th from 09:00 till 18:00. The special blood drive event will be officially opened by Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Athol Trollip. Engen Penford dealer Gerrit Meyer said g big g this year y that they “want to go and ensure that Engen Penford’s annual blood drive will make a real difference.” In order to set a new world record, a total of 150 units of blood need to be donated. “We’d love everyone to help us put Uitenhage on the map as the town donating the most units of blood in one day,” said Marthinus Greyling, organiser of the event. Walk for Cancer event The very first Uitenhage Walk for Cancer will also be hosted by Engen Penford in support of Cancer Awareness month which falls in October. It will be held on October 7th at 08:00. “We’re aiming to have 5 000 entries. All profits will go towards The Igazi Foundation which is based at the Provincial Hospital in Port Elziabeth.” Igazi Foundation The Igazi Foundation is nationally and in-

ternationally recognised as the champion of haematology issues in the broader struggle for better health care services in South Africa. It is the only dedicated haematological services NGO in the country. Participation is R30 per adult and R20 per child. According to Greyling, the objective of the walk is to create awareness regarding cancer and show the importance of donating blood. “Over the festive season, which is fast approaching, blood normally is high in demand. As a business, and a brand with integrity, we want to show our community and the world that we support blood donations. “Someday, somewhere in our life-time we all might need blood which is why we all are obligated to help in any way that we can,” said Greyling. Seelan Naidoo, Engen General Manager: Retail said, “Engen is proud to be a part of the Uitenhage Big Walk for Cancer initiative and we fully support the blood drive which plays such a vital part every day in saving people’s lives. “Engen fully supports and encourages our dealers to roll up their sleeves and engage with their local communities. “We wish Engen Penford every success in setting this exciting new Guinness World Record.”

NATIONAL BOOK WEEK

Books donated to primary schools

T

hirteen specially selected Nelson Mandela Bay primary schools received children’s books amounting to R31 200 as part of the National Book Week which was celebrated last week. The books were collected from August last year by the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) through participating book shops such as Take-a-lot, Bargain Books and Exclusive Books amongst others. Cllr Samantha Beynon, a member of the Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Committee, said reading goes beyond literacy as it creates critical consciousness and transcends circumstances. “It goes beyond just us. As we donate these books, the commitment by those collecting it to distribute to eager young minds, speaks to their everyday commitment to improve the conditions of the children. “However, we must be mindful that while we instil a culture of reading, we need to make books and reading exciting and appealing as the books compete with other alluring activities for children,” Cllr Beynon said. The South African Book Development Council’s national #BuyABook campaign takes place annually at participating bookshops where books can be bought at lower prices and dropped in available book drops. Nelson Mandela Bay, participating in National Book Week since 2012, receives some of these books and donates it to deserving schools. Bongiwe Chigumbu, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Head of Libraries, said the donations made a major difference in the lives of young children and encouraged residents to continue contributing to this worthy cause. The primary schools that received the

Wiliam, William, William. My naam is Johnson. Johnson Grootboom.” “Hierdie droogte is baie erg.

Rotary Club of Uitenhage celebrates 70th year HEILIE COMBRINCK The Rotary Club of Uitenhage this year celebrates its 70th year and its 70th president was inducted last Saturday, nearly on the same date the charter was granted in 1947. A discussion to form a Rotary

Club in Uitenhage was held at the Royal Hotel during 1946. A working committee consisting of Jack Nicholson, Les Watson, Joe Levy, John Gubb and Arthur Edge compiled a report which they sent to Rotary International. On 8 September 1947 the club was started with Jack Nicholson as the

first president. On 9 September 2017, Rynhardt Fourie was inducted as the 70th president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage. He took over from past president Terry Ranger. The Club’s annual Youth Merit Award went to Wian Schutte, for his outstanding chess achievements on international level. He is a Grade 9

learner from Despatch High School. Alexander Phillipson was the recipient of the Community Service Award. He also is a learner at Despatch High School and is an active member of the first aid team assisting during the school’s rugby matches. He is a qualified emergency oxygen

provider and on a voluntary basis assists Guardmed. Past president Mia Smith was named a Paul Harris Fellow, whilst Rotarian Amanda Rudman was the Stirrer of the Year, Hendrik Louw the Spirit of Rotary. The Rotarian of the Year award was given to all the club members.

Lions honour local businessman

The Uitenhage Lions Club had the honour of bestowing a Melvin Jones Fellowship award upon local businessman Paul Barnes. Lions Club International was formed during 1917 by Melvin Jones, a businessman from Chicago. One of the major objectives in the granting of a Melvin Jones Fellowship is the provision of humanitarian services that encompasses a wide range of services to those in need within the community in which the recipient resides. “The Uitenhage Lions Club had the honour of bestowing a Melvin Jones Fellowship award on Paul Barnes. He demonstrates all the aims and efforts of Lionism within the communities of Uitenhage and Despatch,” said Lion Freddie Erasmus, first Vice-District Governor. These Fellowship awards are made to people who have done outstanding work for the less privileged, either as a Lion through their club or as a non-Lion in their community. Barnes’ name will now be inscribed on the honour roll at the

headquarters of the Lions Club International Foundation in the United States of America. His name will be among all the individuals, Lions and non-Lions, men and women living or deceased, who have shared and served humanitarian services. “Included with the plaque bestowed upon Paul Barnes, is a Lion pin which he can wear daily as proof of being honoured with a Melvin Jones Fellowship. This is the highest award granted to an individual by the Lions,” said Lion President Hein de Vrey. S Lions Club International Foundation is a public, non-profit corporation which channels large amounts of assistance to those in greatest need in areas such as major disaster and emergency relief, vocational assistance and humanitarian assistance. To date an amount in excess of $1 billion has been distributed worldwide. Just of late LCIF granted R10 000 in relief for the Knysna Disaster Relief fund to assist those who lost everything as a result of the major disaster that struck the area.

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEAN-UP DAY

Help clean beaches of plastic trash ;Plastic is indigestible. Birds as well fish mistakenly eat these plastic particles as they think it is food. They eventually will starve to death with stomachs full of this plastic debris. PHOTO: DAN CLARK

cientists estimate that more than 8 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year. This means that soon there will be one kilogram of plastic for every three kilograms of fish in the ocean. So be aware. Each time you drop a plastic item in the street, that item will end up in a stormwater drain, then flows into a river and eventually ends up in the ocean or on a beach. “When plastic floats at sea its surface gets colonised by algae within days or weeks, a process known as biofouling. “Fish then confuse this plastic for an edible substance because these microplastics in the oceans pick up a covering of the biological material, such as algae which mimics the smell of food,” says Matthew Savoca, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Plastic debris has become the most serious problem affecting marine life. Not only because floating plastic particles accumulate toxic pollutants, but also because these particles are indigestible and accumulate in the stomachs of birds and fish. These creatures eventually will starve to death! Beach cleanup events this Saturday International Coastal Clean-Up Day will be held on Saturday, September 16th. The Wildlife and Environment Society of

South Africa (WESSA), Algoa Bay Hope Spot and several other role-players have organised beach clean-up events along the beaches in and around the Bay. Last year, with the assistance of the public, around 8 tons of rubbish were collected from local beaches. “Waste and plastic pollution is one of the major threats to the oceans worldwide. Beach clean-ups are helping remarkably in reducing the amount of trash in the seas and the risks for animals to get entangled or ingest plastic,” said Dr Lorien Pichegru from the institute for Coastal and Marine Research, Department of Zoology, Nelson Mandela University. SANPARKE SE NASIONALE PARKEWEEK

WALK TO SUPPORT SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY =Suicide Prevention Day was held on September 10th. Supporting the day was a group of 19 people who participated in a 2km walk alongside Hobie Beach. They afterwards went for break fast at Spur. The event was organised by Maryke Gouws, support group leader of the Bipolar Support Group in Despatch. The next group meeting will be tonight from 19:0020:15 at 20 Smith Street, Despatch. For more information contact Maryke on 082 320 9452. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Ek hou daarvan. Die lewe gaan aan. Alles moet verander. Ek is ’n gemaklike mens.

The name change does not really make a difference to me. It’s the same news that is in the paper. I don’t mind change. I definitely feel closer to the Nelson Mandela Bay now that it has the Express name. Anything that has to do with our community, I really do like that. I like reading about the children going places, especially those

from the rural communities.

elework has come of age in SA, and with many thousands of employees now regularly and routinely working remotely, the home office is rapidly moving up the “must have” list for prospective homebuyers of all ages, says Gerhard Kotzé, MD of the RealNet estate agency group. “One tends to think of Millennials as being the work-at-home generation – or actually the work-on-the-move generation – but actually the nature of work has changed for everyone, and these days we find that seniors, middleaged executives and first-time buyers are all looking for homes with a clearly defined office space where they can work several days a week instead of going to their commercial offices.

“In many cases, in fact, they would rather have a study set up for work with the necessary phone and computer connections than a separate dining room or a spare bedroom. And then there are an increasing number of buyers who run home-based businesses, for whom an outbuilding is now more likely to become their ‘headquarters’ than to be converted into a flat.” Many studies have now been done, he notes, that have established that employees who are able to work at home at least some of the time are generally happier and more productive than their office-bound counterparts. “There are quite a number of companies that in fact are now based in co-working office spaces, where they occupy only a few perma-

nent offices and hire meeting rooms and other facilities only once or twice a month when all their employees get together. For the rest of the time those employees work from wherever they are, whether that is home, their car, or a coffee shop with free wi-fi. “Then come those homes with “convertible” space, such as a spare bedroom or garage that can easily be transformed into a home office, and home sellers will generally find that it is well worth their while to do so. Bottom of the list are those that would require additions or alterations to create a home office, since those working from home or intending to do so can seldom

afford the downtime that would be involved.” When it comes to new homes, he says, many developers are already tapping into the trend and designing in a versatile room or area that can clearly be identified as a home office. “In fact, some say the lack of such a facility is now quite likely to be a deal-breaker, especially in dual-income families where at least one adult works from home most of time or has a homebased enterprise.” (-Issued: RealNet)

THANK YOU FATHER JOHN I’m Errol from Uitenhage, the year 2015 wasn’t good for me before I saw Father John's testimony i was disappointed in traditional & herbalist healers, my car & house were taken debt collectors were on my neck because my job was not paying enough & my husband had left me. My children were always sick life was a mess up, then i saw the testimony in the newspaper, on local Tv & radio stations, people & Tsakane Ngobeni thanking him for changing they lives in financial & love problems with one day special prayers offered by Father John I quickly contacted Father John he offered me prayer & short boys to put money in my bank account. I was surprised seeing money in account. Teams invited to play in street soccer classic HEILIE COMBRINCK

T

he third annual Street Soccer Classic tournament will be hosted by Swiftresponse Street Soccer at the Jubilee Park Sports Fields in Uitenhage on 3 & 5 October.

Local young and enthusiastic soccer players, girls and boys, are invited in team format to join the tournament which will be held during the forthcoming school holiday. Participation is free of charge. What is different to the tournament this year is that it will be hosted in collaboration with Ursula Candasamy from Heaven’s Missing Angels. “The purpose of the tournament is to build friendships, to unite and for the soccer players to enjoy the beautiful game of soccer,” said Ade Adekunle from Swiftsresponse Street Soccer Classic. Last year’s tournament attracted approximately 190 young soccer players from the area. The organisers this year are preparing to accommodate 200 players. There will be categories for juniors and seniors and teams can consist of boys, girls or mixed teams. The tournament will be held on 3 & 5 October at the Jubilee Sports Fields in Uitenhage. Registration (free) is at 08:30 on each day of play and participants will receive medals. “It is not about winning or losing, but uniting through sport, bonding with new friends and enjoying the game. Discipline is impor-

tant, but it is also important to have fun through sport,” said Adenkunle. )For more information contact Ade Adekunle 073 003 9441 or David Abrahams (head coach) 062 700 5595
