Learners still in asbestos classrooms R

oads and Public Works MEC Thandiswa Marawu must urgently investigate alleged unauthorised expenditure of at least R6-million that was paid to a contractor of the still uncompleted Jubilee Park Primary School in Uitenhage.

This is according to a media statement issued by Vicky Knoetze (MPL) Shadow MEC for Roads and Public Works.

“Learners are still in asbestos and prefab structures, despite the appointment of a contractor by the Department of Roads and Public Works in August 2014,” said Knoetze.

“The original completion date was October 2016. It was then moved to March 2017, then to July 2017, followed by September 2017. At this stage, the completion date is April 2018.”

On investigation, the Democratic Alliance found out that the contractor has not been on site since November last year and only returned recently with a small staff complement.

“In terms of documentation received, the reason that no work had been done since last year was that the contractor allegedly claimed an additional R6-million for a 58-day delay. It was claimed the delay was due to labour unrest and local labour strikes, which entitles the contractor to an adjustment.

“However, according to a mediator’s report, the contractor was entitled to an amount of only R649 000,” said Knoetze.

tor’s report. The fact that the Department paid an amount of over R5.3-million more than what is stipulated in the mediator’s report is indicative of gross negligence, resulting in a massive amount of unauthorised expenditure as this was never part of the contract.

“It has transpired that the contractor is allegedly also claiming additional funds in connection with the R6-million settlement, of almost R1-million.

“It is also alleged that the contractor is demanding that penalties incurred of almost R2-million be reversed,” said Knoetze.

She said it is unacceptable that learners have to sit in prefabs and asbestos buildings and that they deserve more.

According to Jubilee Park Primary principal, Patrick Korkee, the 1338 learners for the past four years have been attending school in double shifts, from 08:00 to 12:00 and 12:00 to 16:00.

“Being at school for only 4 hours a day is not ideal. It does affect the learners’ academic achievements. It is impossible to complete curricula in such a short time compared to the normal 7 hours,” said Korkee.

The prefabs and asbestos class rooms date back to 1952 and during 2012 a total of 11 of these old classrooms were destroyed by a fire.

“We are looking forward to moving to the new state-of-the-art classrooms and continuing our education as per the norm,” said Korkee. -HEILIE COMBRINCK

Childhood cancer awareness: many types are curable T

oday, February 15th, is International Childhood Cancer awareness day with the message that many types of childhood cancer are curable.

This is if it is detected early through proper diagnosis; if the child has access to life-saving essential medicines; and if the child receives appropriate and quality medical treatments.

In support of childhood cancer, the national Cupcake Day 4 Kids With Cancer is held

A Cupcake Day 4 Kids With Cancer was held last year in Uitenhage and a total of R30 000 was raised.

Mandrax tablets found in Rosedale yard Members from the Uitenhage Cluster are resolute to participate in efforts to address the root causes of crime and drug dealing.

According to Captain Gerda Swart, the members last weekend followed up on information, executed a search warrant and found 290 mandrax tablets, worth R14 500, abandoned in a yard in Grompou Road, Rosedale.

“Members executed a second search warrant in Mooimeisie Street, Rosedale and found 35 clear plastic bankies of dagga and 80 bompies of dagga, also abandoned outside

the premises. Eleven (11) drug related arrests were made over the past weekend,” said Captain Swart.

Several successful operations were conducted with the assistance of the detectives, which yielded good results.

A total of 87 suspects were arrested on charges ranging from murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm, robbery and theft.

Fourteen (14) traffic related fines were issued, valued over R7 000.

Community assistance sought by Despatch police Detectives in Despatch are seeking the assistance of the community to help identify the suspects and locate the next-of-kin of an unknown male whose body was discovered at about 10:20 on Monday, 29 January 2018.

The body of the unidentified male was found with a bullet wound to the head, in the bushes opposite the M19 Road, Despatch. The male was between 20 and 40-years old and about 1,50 m tall. He was wearing blue pants,

a red sweater, black tekkies and a blue cap.

He had no identification in his possession.

Milestone: Retiring after 44 years of service V

eronica Nombulelo Williams (65) has spent a lifetime with one company. She has retired after 44 years of service at Bayradiology.

She joined the practice on 1st of December 1973 and her last day of work was on 31st of January 2018. Throughout these years she has worked at various departments of the practice across Nelson Mandela Bay and finally in Uitenhage at Bayradiology which is situated at Netcare Cuyler Hospital.

Her colleagues described her as strong, friendly, patient, quiet, consistent, accountable, reliable and mother-like.

Vera Fourie from Bayradiology said, “Some of us strive our whole life to attain these qualities and yet to Veronica, it came

seemingly easily.

“She is a strong quiet women who will be sorely missed in our practice. Although she is not a part of our team anymore, she will always be part of experiences shared and memories made.”

Vanessa said she is thankful towards all her colleagues for the years, the good and the tough times, she has served alongside them in the workforce.

“It was good. I will always remember my working days. But I am tired now. I need ‘metime’ and to take care of my health and own life,” said Vanessa Williams.

She said she will also devote her retirement days to her church and friends.

Mr & Miss Inter High/Primary: Entries awaited to empower learners HEILIE COMBRINCK The Mr & Miss Inter High 2018 initiative is not a beauty pageant, but an opportunity for learners to experience new aspects of their lives.

With experiences like a boot camp, photoshoots, hiking, a collect-a-can charity event and a creativity session where learners need to design themed outfits out of recycled material, candidates are in for an unforgettable adventure.

The event is organised by Lynn Liberty, a former Mrs Commonwealth SA runner-up.

She commenced with the annual Mr & Miss

Inter High in 2012.

“This is not a beauty pageant. It is about empowering, developing and creating diversity among the young ones.

“When you work toward a goal, you tend to appreciate your efforts. But when titles are handed to you, it will be taken for granted.

“I started this initiative for our local youth. To offer an opportunity to empower them, to help develop their talents and also to contribute in a holistic way to the community they live in,” said Lynn, who has been invited by I Do Magazine to be a host at its awards evening at Emperors Palace.

“I gained so much knowledge through the

Mrs Commonwealth pageant, as a participant, official judge and pageant director, and therefore I wish to share it in the community I live in.”

Lynn said she initially commenced with a Miss Inter High initiative, but it boomed to the extent that she started Mr Inter High too.

“Now I am proud to announce that our primary schools came on board and boasts its own show, Miss & Master Inter Primary.”

The initiative is open to any learners interested to entering.

High school entrants: Grade 10 and 11 boys and girls may enter the high school category (entries close

March 3rd). The entry fee is R150 and all entrants will be part of the activities. Interviews for the top 12 will be on May 5th. The initiative will culminate in the main event on Youth Day, June 16th, at the Uitenhage Town Hall at 19:00.

Primary school entrants: The Miss & Master Inter Primary event will be held at the Uitenhage Town Hall on June 15th at 16:00. Entries are R100 per participant and the closing date to enter is March 3rd.

Die somerhitte laat deesdae enigiemand hyg, maar ons gesels ontspanne in sy koel sitkamer. Die gesprek gaan oor sy jongste jeugroman Soen, wat bekroon is met ’n Sanlam silwer-toekenning.

Vermeulen sê dat momente van sy leefwêreld, nou en in die verlede, die inspirasie-vonke is wat sy stories laat vlamvat. Daarby ken hy tieners en hy weet hoe hulle koppe werk.

Soen gaan oor ’n matriekseun wat verlief raak op sy juffrou.

“In my matriekjaar was ek baie gewaagd om oor ’n soen te skryf. Die juffrou het niks gesê nie en eenvoudig my punte gegee, want die sin was reg! Van daardie tyd af spook dié soen-sin by my. Nou, baie jare later, het ek ’n hele boek rondom daardie matriekjaar se soen-sin geskryf.”

Vermeulen sê sý juffrou destyds “was mooi en alles” maar hy was nie verlief op haar nie.

“Die vonk vir die boek was … sê nou maar net die seun was wél verlief op die juffrou en toe skryf hý die soen-sin?”

Soen gaan oor hierdie soort verbode liefde.

Maar nou wonder Vermeulen of dié soort liefde regtigwaar sleg en verkeerd is. “Hoekom moet dié liefde aan bande gelê word? Bly lief nie net lief nie? Hoekom mag jy nie verlief raak op iemand ouer of jonger as jy nie?

“Die ding met verbode liefde is die konsekwensies. En dit is hoe die soen-sin tot hierdie jeugroman ontwikkel het,” sê Vermeulen.

Grootwordjare Vermeulen het in Namibië in die klein dorpie Bethanie grootgeword waar sy liefde vir skryf vir die eerste keer gestalte gekry het in sy eie fotoverhaal. As 14-jarige is sy eerste

kortverhaal gepubliseer in Patrys, ’n jeugtydskrif van daardie jare.

Die mense van Bethanie het ’n diep indruk op hom gelaat en dit dra by tot die vorming van karakters vir sy verhale, vertel hy verder.

“Baie van hulle pop nog hier en daar as ’n karakter in my stories uit. Nie net van Bethanie nie, ook van Windhoek waar ons later jare gewoon het en nou hier op Despatch.”

Beeldhou en karakterbou Benewens sy woordkuns, is Vermeulen ook ’n skilder én beeldhouer. Hy verduidelik dat die vorming van karakters in sy stories net soos sy kleibeelde vorm kry.

“Jy vat ’n stukkie klei hier en las dit daar … en so vorm jy ‘n karakter in jou verhaal.”

Soms is daar miskien iets sentraal van mense met wie hy te doen gekry het in sy boek-karakters, erken hy, “maar ek sal nooit só ’n persoon netso in my boeke inskryf nie.”

In ’n onderhoud met SA Vryskutskrywer sê Vermeulen: “Niemand kan karakters uit niks uit skep nie, net God kan. Dus, in elke verhaal is daar maar altyd karakters wat gewaagd baie op werklike wesens geskep is, terwyl die meeste karakters uit ietsie van almal saamgestel is.”

Vermeulen sê daar is lesers wat die skrywer self in sy boek-karakters soek.

Dié “karakter-soeke” tref baie skrywers, sê Vermeulen. “André P. Brink het gesê in al sy karakters is daar iets van homself. As skrywer dink jy jou tog in elke karakter in want jy moet die storie uit die karakter se oog sien – maar, dit maak jou nie die karakter nie!”

Vele verhale op een slag Vermeulen is tans besig met vier boeke waaronder ’n opvolg vir sy volwasse roman Die Vyfde Aspoester. Laasgenoemde in opdrag van Lapa Uitgewers.

’n Internasionale bekroning: Jan Vermeulen se jeugroman Asem is pas deur IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) as ereboek in die kategorie vir Afrikaanse jeugliteratuur aangewys.

Dít beteken Asem sal deel vorm van die internasionale erelyskatalogus wat tweejaarliks deur dié gesaghebbende kinderboekliggaam saamgestel word.

Toe Asem as wenner van LAPA Uitgewers se jeugromankompetisie vir 2015 aangewys is, het die beoordelaars dit beskryf as ’n aangrypende, eerlike grootwordverhaal oor verslawing en tweede kanse.

Hy het gedebuteer met ’n grensroman, Die laaste dans (1998), toe verskyn sy trefferboek en eerste jeugroman, Geraamtes dra nie klere nie (2000), waarvoor hy ’n Sanlamprys (goud) ontvang het sowel as die MER-prys, Scheepersprys en ATKV-kinderboektoekenning.

Sy kortverhaal In Ma se Stoof is opgeneem in die kortverhaalbundel Van Spoke Gepraat.

Daarna volg Asem (2016) waarvoor hy ’n Lapa eerste prys ontvang het en toe volg Soen (2017) met ’n Sanlamprys (silwer).

Vermeulen se volwasse roman, Die Vyfde Aspoester, is ’n sielkundige spanningsriller en sal Maart-maand op die rakke wees.

die lys die beste van elke land se kinderliteratuur moet verteenwoordig, en dat dit geskik moet wees vir publikasie regoor die wêreld.

Die boeke op die lys vorm deel van rondreisende uitstallings wat by verskeie internasionale konferensies en literêre feeste te sien sal wees, en sal ook deel vorm van die permanente uitstallings van byvoorbeeld die Internasionale Jeugbiblioteek in München, Duitsland.

Die uitnodigng: Kom ry saam in Elandsriviervallei, deur die veel besproke Grootrivierpoort in die Groot Winterhoek-bergreeks, anderkant uit tot by die plaas Rietfontein naby Steytlerville waar daar uitgespan word.

Die uitdaging: Om dié rowwe, uitgetrapte bergpad, nogal een van Thomas Bain se ou passe, aan te pak in ’n Isuzu D-TEQ KB 300 LX 4x4. Die ander vierwielers is ’n Toyota Fortuner en ’n Toyota Hilux.

Maar toe die bakkie se 18 duim wiele begin

rol op die Elandsrivier-grondpad, verdamp die eerste indrukke soos mis voor die son. Met die viertrek-opsie geaktiveer sak hy vas en sit stewig in die draaie.

So 80km verder die vallei in, vurk die pad.

Links neem die pad jou na Patensie en regs nooi die tweespoor-klippad jou Hanekamberg se kant toe, diep die onherbergsaamheid in.

Uiteindelik is ons by Grootrivier en word daar kans gegee vir die Fortuner en Hilux om deur die water te ry. Die Isuzu se grondvryhoogte maak dat dit met gemak deurry.

verkies om eerste te kolf. Goeie boulwerk deur Daniel Pienaar se spinboulers het Brandwag beperk tot 136/8 in hulle 40 boulbeurte. Boulers wat uitgeblink het is Cameron Williams (8 boulbeurte, 3 paaltjies en 31 lo-

DP se openingskolwers het vir ’n goeie afskop gesorg met ‘n 50 lopiesvennootskap. Reën het die spel tot ’n einde gebring met 69/1 na 16 boulbeurte vir DP. DP het die wedstryd gewen op grond van ‘n superieure lopietempo.

Hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay, The River Mile is an action packed family day out at the picturesque Cannonville on the Sunday’s River and in 2018 will be celebrating its 94th Anniversary.

Taking place on Sunday, February 18th, visitors can expect a wide variety of crafts, vendors, beer garden, Rotary Kids Zone and sporting events suitable for the entire family.

Africa’s oldest open water swim boasts a rich history of swimmers who have won this historic event including SA Olympic swimming icon, Ryk Neethling, and SA’s first ladies Olympian Joan Harrison.

At the age of just 12 years, Harrison won the Ladies Quarter Mile in 1948 (Ladies Mile started in 1987) whilst Neethling won the Mile at the age of 16 in 1994.

Local 18 year old defending champions Ian Venter and Amica de Jager are in top form and keen to cross the line first again. Venter who swims for Aquabear Swimming Club in Port Elizabeth recently won the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA) 5km and 3km Openwater Championship events and continues to dominate the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series 1km ocean swim and has demonstrated that he will be hard to beat this year.

National lifesaving champion and recent NMBA 10km and 3km Champion, De Jager, who swims under legendary swimmmer Haydn Holmes at Liquid Lines in Cape St Francis is currently in a class of her own in open water swimming in the Eastern Cape.

Whilst swum over a distance of 1,6km the River Mile takes place during the peak of the incoming tide resulting in a very fast swim which often favours some of the top pool swimmers.

The River Mile offers a fantastic day out for the whole family with not only swimming events to entertain. The grounds of the Cannonville slipway are transformed into a festival area with loads of food vendors, crafters and displays to complement a Castle Free Beer Garden, Cerebos Chill Zone and the Wimpy Rotary Kids Zone, a magnificent inflatable play area for children under 12 under the watchful eye of Rotary and Rotaract mem-

bers.

The 94th River Mile is supported by the Municipality of Nelson Mandela Bay and is fueled by Caltex Eastern Cape with around 100 children from disadvantaged communities being afforded the opportunity to take part in this prestige sporting event.

Entry fee to the festival area on Sunday will be just R20 for non-participants. Online registration for the events is highly recommended to avoid the late entry fee charged on the day.

All participants are also required to purchase a R30 mobii timing chip for the events.
