Rock festival in support of charity R

ock the Hage is Uitenhage’s premier annual rock festival featuring a great lineup of local bands and what is more is that it all is to the benefit of local charity.

TIGER CYCLIST WINS NELSON MANDELA BIKE CHALLENGE =Gerrit Rautenbach, a Grade 12 learner at Daniel Pienaar THS, showed his mettle when he won the inaugural 36km Nelson Mandela Bike Challenge. Gerrit earned his bragging rights since he competed against men and finished the race in a sterling time of 01:13:04. The race started in front of the Royal Lounge, went around the outer perimeter of the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium, over practice fields and in a clockwise direction around the lake. Gerrit reports that the laps in the stadium were exciting because of the fast surface and turns. Local rock bands like Day Trippers, Beddlam, Poltergeist, Anton Calitz and many more will take to the stage. The event will be hosted at Riebeek College on March 23rd & 24th from 18:00 till late on both of the evenings. It is supported by the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. “The proceeds will go to a range of local charities in Uitenhage. Particularly towards the refurbishment of the reception classrooms at Caritas School in Rosedale,” said Rotarian Clive Hassell from the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. Food and soft drinks will be available. “Festivalgoers may bring their own refreshments, thus helping to make it a really inexpensive night out whilst enjoying brilliant live rock music and help local communities into the bargain,” said Rotarian Hassell. )Tickets are R70 each and can be purchased at lots of shops around town or from any member of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South. childhood development centres and the process of registration as well as the norms and standards that these centres need to comply with, will be held at the Uitenhage Town Hall. It is being hosted by the Uitenhage office of the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development. “We call on all organisations providing day care services to children (partial care) or early childhood development services in the Uitenhage and Despatch areas to attend the workshop,” said Carren Brandt, Social Worker: Uitenhage Service Office.

“ECDs who are not registered with the Department of Social Development and the municipality may sometimes pose a risk to the children they have in their care.” Partial care, according to Section 76 of the Children’s Act 38 of 2005, is a service that is provided when a person takes care of more than six children on behalf of their parents; or care-givers during specific hours of the day or night; or for a temporary period, by agreement between the parents or caregivers and the provider of the service. An ECD need to be registered with the provincial government of the province where it is situated. It also must be managed and

maintained in accordance with any conditions subject to which the centre is registered. And it needs to comply with the prescribed national norms and standards. The information sharing session is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 19th from 10:00 at the Uitenhage Town Hall. Skool vir die toekoms sonder matriek HEILIE COMBRINCK “Mense se hande is deesdae rond, hulle kan net penne en selfone vashou. Ons met meer hande nodig wat Suid-Afrika kan help opbou, wat kundig is in goed soos loodgieterwerk, herstelwerk, verf of om tegniese diens te lewer.” So sê Deon Wolmarans, skoolhoof van Bergsig Skool op Uitenhage, een van min skole in die land waar méér werkswinkels gebou word om die groeiende getal tegniese-leerlinge te akkommodeer. Bergsig Skool het in 1958 met 24 leerlinge in die skoolbanke begin en vandag 60 jaar later staan die getal op 619 leerlinge. “Bergsig leerlinge kry dieselfde blootstelling as kinders in hoofstroomskole. Ons leerlinge presteer ook in akademie, kultuur, sport en buitemuurs,” sê Wolmarans, die vierde skoolhoof sedert die skool se beginjare. “Die verskil is, ons skool is ’n skool met geleenthede en ons leerlinge behaal sukses sonder matriek. In die LSEN skole word leerlinge geskool in 12 tegniese rigtings waarin hulle na-skool in beroepe verdere opleiding ontvang. Hulle kan ook in hoofstroomskole hul graad 11 en 12 voltooi indien hul akademiese punte goed genoeg is.” Onderwysstelsel vaal SA Wolmarans sê die getal Bergsig-aansoeke neem jaarliks toe. Einde 2017 het meer as 700 leerlinge aansoek gedoen om by Bergsig skool te gaan. Om die rede is die planne deur die departement van onderwys goedgekeur dat daar verskeie nuwe klaskamers en werkswinkels by Bergsig gebou word. “Dié vraag is as gevolg van die land se swak onderwysstelsel. ’n Leerling mag net een jaar ’n fase druip, die daaropvolgende jaar word hy of sy aangeskuif. Wat leer ’n kind as hy of sy bloot net aangeskuif word as hy of sy druip? Dit beteken die onderwysstelsel vaal SuidAfrika,” sê Wolmarans. Meeste LSEN werkswinkels in land “Elke jaar begin so gemiddeld 1.2 miljoen leerlinge met graad 1. Twaalf jaar later skryf ongeveer 450 000 leeringe matriek. Van dié 450 000 kry ’n gemiddeld van net 17% universiteitstoelating en van dié 17% voltooi net die helfde hulle graad of diploma. “As mens na hierdie statistieke kyk, besef jy hoe broodnodig is LSEN skole vir leerlinge wie se sterkte in tegniese vaardighede is. “Suid-Afrika het mense nodig wat motors kan bou, wat huise kan bou en wat tegniese dienste kan lewer om so ’n gemeenskap en die land te help opbou,” sê Wolmarans. Om in dié ideaal te voorsien, het Bergsig goedkeuring gekry om 16 nuwe klaskamers en 5 werkswinkels te bou. “Dit beteken dat Bergsig 17 werkswinkels sal hê, die meeste werkswinkels by ’n LSEN skool in Suid-Afrika. Dan is ons reg om 900 leerlinge op te lei om hul plek vol te staan in tegniese beroepe, iets waarin die land ’n groot tekort het,” sê Wolmarans.

Die skool spog ook deesdae met twee vroue as adjunkhoofde naamlik Luana Bester en Jody Nel. Oor die afgelope 59 jaar het 5 086 leerlinge met sukses hulle graad 10 aan Bergsig voltooi. Die lys van suksesvolle sakemanne en -vroue, entrepreneurs en oud-leerlinge wat in professionele beroepe is, is lank. Dit sluit onder meer oud-leerlinge in soos Árthur Bownes, Andew Bennett, Kenneth Botha, Berneace Coetzer, Deon van Loggerenberg, Schalk du Toit, Stefanus van der Merwe en Denise de Lange. “As dit nie vir Bergsig was nie, sou baie van ons oud-leerlinge nooit die sukses bereik het wat hul wel bereik het nie,” sê Wolmarans. Bergsig se beginjare Aanvanklik was klasse vir leeringe met spesiale leerbehoeftes in drie Uitenhage laerskole geakkommodeer. Dié skole was laerskole Innes, Dolley en Jordan Primêre Skool (nou Handhaaf). Die eerste volwaardige Spesiale Middelbare Skool was by die destydse Dolley skool ingerig. Die palmboom waaronder die eerste skoolfotos geneem is, staan steeds teen die hange in Youngstraat. Presteerders op vele vlakke Op kultuurgebied floreer Bergsig se leerlinge. Gedurende 2014 het ’n kunsleerling, Nkosi Kilana, deurgedring na die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskappe in Rustenburg waar 1 500 deelnemers van dwarsoor Suid-Afrika hul talente gedeel het. Hyis vergesel deur kunsonderwyser Luana Bester en Nkosi was een van die vyf kategorie-wenners en is aangewys om Suid-Afrika in die VSA te verteenwoordig. “Bergsig-leerlinge neem jaarliks aan kompetisies deel waar hoofstroomskole ook teenwoordig is. Bergsig staan beslis nie terug in die gemeenskap nie en vervul ’n waardevolle bydrae op kuns en kultuurgebied in die gemeenskap,” sê Wolmarans. Op sportgebied het Bergsig die afgelope 10 jaar, onder leiding van afrigters Leon Welgemoed en Pieter Prins, 10 rugbyspelers in die Suid-Afrikaanse LSEN rugbyspan gehad. Vir twee agtereenvolgende jare was Bergsig se netbalspan, met Jody Nel as afrigter, die top LSEN span. In 2017 het 5 atlete van Bergsig aan die SA atletiekkampioenskappe deelgeneem. Op die krieketveld is daar ook jaarlikes spelers wat op nasionale vlak presteer en in 2017 was die Oos-Kaap LSEN krieket die beste in die land. 60-jaar Vieringe Verskeie sport- en kultuur-aktiwiteit word deur die jaar aangepak ter viering van die skool se 60ste jaar. Eerskomende naweek word ’n sporttoernooi aangebied met besoekende skole van regoor die land. Die hoogtepunt van die vieringe is op 12 Oktober 2018 wanneer Bergsig se stigtingsdag gevier word. Op 26 November bied Bergsig hul gewilde Kerstee aan waar ’n verskeidenheid items wat deur leerlinge vervaardig is te koop aangebied word.

HEILIE COMBRINCK DIE Uitenhage Straatkarnaval is een van die Uitenhage Rotariërklub se prominente fondsinsmelprojekte wat jaarliks gehou word om die klub te bemagtig om ’n positiewe verskil in die gemeenskap te help maak. Die hoofbegunstigde van die karnaval is Drostdy Werkplek vir verstandelik gestremde volwassenes. “As afskopprojek vir die jaar het ons Rotariërs 65 werkers by Drostdy verras met ‘n middagete. Die werkers werk dwarsdeur die jaar vreeslik hard aan hul eie fondsinsamelingsprojekte, so ons het gevoel dit is tyd om hulle bietjie te bederf,” sê Mia Smit van die Uitenhage Rotariër Klub. Die klub het ook ’n nuwe kookwaterkan, breekware, kruideniersware, skoonmaakmiddels sowel as geskenke vir die agt personeellede oorhandig. NGK De Mist het die spyseniering gedoen.

Heartfelt ‘thank you’ in desperate hours A near to hopeless man from Despatch who did not know how he would get his frail and ill wife to the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town, was overwhelmed by the “out of the blue” help from the community. Rob Watt wrote the following letter to thank all who assisted him and his wife, Jenny, in the midst of in their crisis: “My wife had to have a major operation which could only be done at hospital in Cape Town. Times being hard and our vehicles in no condition to attempt this trip, our situation turned into a nightmare. Then out of the blue with Nikki’s bugging Darnie, of Guiseppes, he started to raise funds to help cover some of our expenses.

Karen and Ronnie Kapp also stepped in and offered transport to Cape Town whilst Peter and Cheryl paid for a return flight. Jen has had the operation and now receives further treatment in Port Elizabeth. We wish to thank everyone for stepping in and supporting us in our desperate hours. Therefore Despatch Preparatory has decided to grant their learners the opportunity once a week to visit the Despatch Library. “We realized that learners don’t know stories, not to mention that they have no clue about the classic children’s stories. Reading is such an essential part in developing a child’s cognitive skills, imagination and creativity,” said Adele de Lange, Head of Department at Despatch Preparatory. The library visits to grant children access to all varieties of literature was one of De Lange’s brainstorming ideas. “It is amazing to observe their reaction when they find a book that they are interested in. Many of the learners know what a library is, but have never been inside a library. That is why it is so heart-warming to see how they get carried away whilst reading a book they like.”

Apart from providing the learners the opportunity to respond to literature, they are also taught the basics of library etiquette. How to handle a book, how to page and how to place it back where it belongs. Learners have to hand in the books after three weeks and then also have to give a brief feedback about the book. “We started with the project only this year and it is for the four Grade 3 classes only. We wish to expand it, but transport is limited.” According to librarian Tokozile Calata, “It is wonderful to see how eager the learners are when they visit the library. “Now that they know what there is to offer inside the library, it is like a new world opening up to them.” “I find it very interesting that so many of the young learners ask for books about cooking. I think one day we will have a lot of good cooks,” said Calata. During public holidays various educational programmes are held at the Despatch Library. Librarian said she wish more kids will join in the fun. Transport, however, is a problem for some of the learners, especially those from Khayamnandi.

Manne wat by die koor wil aansluit is baie wel-

kom!” Sondag se program in die NGK Gamtoosvallei-gemeente is getitel “Van die Eerste koms tot die Wederkoms - ‘n Jesus verhaal” en dit bestaan uit gedigte sowel as sang. “Aan die einde van die program word ’n hoorbeeld deur Gitts gedoen. Dit is heel ougat en hy is baie goed daarmee om die verhaal aan te pas by die dorp waar ons optree. Die mense sal daarvan hou om bekende plekke en name van hul omgewing ingevleg in die verhaal te hoor,” sê Griebenow. Die Despatch Mannekoor se volgende optrede is op Graaff Reinet op 22 April. Daarna sal hulle in Aberdeen optree op 20 Mei. Hul beplan ook ’n Koffiehuiskonsert met ’n opgeruimde geestelike atmosfeer vir later die jaar. “Ons tree graag by kerke of geestelike funksies op. Riebeek’s 100 Ubuntu acts of kindness RIEBEEK College Girls’ High School has an annual theme for their projects and this year it is Ubuntu - which is about humanity, a community spirit and compassion for others. During the launch of the Ubuntu project, Riebeek principal, Kieran Stear said, “We want to commit Riebeek to making 2018 a year of service and love for others to make a difference in the world. “This being the centenary year of the birth of Nelson Mandela, we are going to make every day a Mandela Day as we seek to demonstrate Ubuntu and the Madiba magic that he was famous for. “In a world where one can choose to be anything, at Riebeek we choose to be kind, compassionate, generous, respectful, honest and inclusive. Each one of us can make a difference in the world,” said Stear. Riebeek’s project is Mandela100@Riebeek100 acts of kindness. The school will undertake various projects under the banner of acts of kindness and want to make sure they do at least 100 things, if not more. For example, a cake sale by a particular grade will be an act of kindness in fundraising for animals; Interact visiting a retirement village to take flowers and chat to the lonely is an act of kindness. “We are hoping that each register class will undertake a class act of kindness or projects that involve giving up time to help others and make the world a better place.
