Gewilde Elandré sing op ‘tuisdorp’ HEILIE COMBRINCK

Not only has the school’s matric pass rate increased for the third consecutive year, but the school is also proud of its top achiever, Kamvalethu Rengqe. This Matric of the Year finalist obtained seven distinctions and was named the top Nelson Mandela Bay matric pupil at a historically disadvantaged school. The school’s pass rate for the past three years has increased from 76.4% (2015), to 81.3% (2016) and 85.9% (2017). School principal Mncedi Mtengwana said the school’s successes are thanks to the team efforts from all the beneficiaries involved. “Our educators are dedicated. This is strengthened by the support of our learners’ parents, church groups and everybody here at Solomon Mahlangu,” said Mtengwana. “And of course, the learners’ eagerness to build a better future by studying hard and believing in the educational system that we have established at the school. “To be successful, it starts in Grade 8 where you have to instil discipline and the desire for

“I would advise learners to sacrifice their free time, friends and Facebook and rather concentrate on their studies. The Grade 12 year is very very short and this short year determines the rest of your life forward. “Never accept your current situation if you wish for something more. Fight for it, don’t give up. Find a way of fighting through hard work which will enrich your life. Violence is pointless and sometimes your biggest enemy is yourself,” said Kamvalethu. According to Olwen Carson, social worker at Solomon Mahlangu, Grade 12s for the past five years commenced with their final year a week prior to the official opening of schools. “There are certain tasks that need to be done apart from issuing text books. So, when school officially opens, serious teaching commences. We need to put that extra sacrifice in to be successful. That is our commitment to our matrics,” said Carson. As part of the principal initiative in “turning the school around”, matrics also attend extra classes during holidays with a matric camp during November. Matrics are also told from the beginning of their Grade 12 year that they will be the last people to leave the school every day. They also form study groups which gather daily and are supervised by parents. Kamvalethu’s father is Sandile Rengqe, a petrol attendant at Engen Cuyler in Uiten-

Kamvalethu will commence his post matric studies at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) to study Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) and major in computer science. As top achiever in Nelson Mandela Bay he was offered a R100 000 scholarship from the Eastern Cape Department of Education, a R15 000 scholarship from Wits and will receive funds from Engen Stars Group, an educational support initiative of which he was a member.

The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South were able to respond rapidly to the needs of the people. The fire victims were given temporary shelter in Langa
Hall. Their most pressing need was food and the wherewithal to prepare it. “An initial contribution of several R1 000’s worth of food and basic necessities was quickly gathered together and delivered by Rotarians to the victims,” said Rotarian Clive Hassell.
SASSA warns against another fake message ACCORDING to a media statement issued by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the recent information currently circulating on social media stating that SASSA is providing uniforms and stationery to school-going children who receive the child support grant is untrue. SASSA has urged beneficiaries of social grants to ignore the messages. “SASSA does not supply stationery to schoolgoing children as it is not within the SASSA mandate. “School uniforms are provided as part of the Social Relief of Distress programme. “However, this programme is implemented in terms of the Social Assistance Act of 2004, and all prospective beneficiaries have to meet legislated
criteria,” the statement said. SASSA said the programme was facilitated after engagement with principals of identified schools, and thereafter an assessment is conducted. “Furthermore, children who are to benefit from this programme have already been identified and orders for the uniforms have already been placed through local co-operatives, who sew the uniforms,” the statement said. “SASSA discourages anyone from retweeting or circulating this message as it is causing confusion among beneficiaries of social grants.” )Beneficiaries are urged to check the authenticity of any information with the SASSA call centre on 0800 601 011 or visit www.sassa.gov.za

he Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is currently seeking solutions to curtail the long queues at the Korsten and Uitenhage traffic and driver’s licensing centres. The long queues have resulted in a wave of frustration by the public. “Our continuous efforts to get the Road Traffic Management Corporation, ultimately responsible for driver’s licence centres, to address broken machines at the traffic and licensing centres presented us with an unintended consequence,” said Councillor John Best, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Safety and Security. Best said they converted from the outdated live capturing units, which had reached the end of their shelf lives and caused numerous problems, and became the first metropolitan municipality in the country to be upgraded to the new live enrolment machines. “While a normal transaction would initially take five minutes, it can now take up to 20 minutes to register. I cannot express how sorry I am for members of the public who must wait in long queues before they can be helped. “We were informed by the Department of Transport that network problems persist between Korsten and the national office in Pretoria.” “We negotiated with the national department once again. We engaged with Telkom as the network provider and our IT department to find a faster network connection to address the tardiness of the current system.” Best said this would ensure that the system is faster which will enable them to assist more clients. “Other critical solutions include the establishment of a B-class traffic and licensing centre at the Motherwell Thusong Ser-

PHOTO:HEILIE COMBRINCK vice Centre, which will provide all the services except for processing motorcycle licences. “We envisaged this centre with 8 new live enrolment machines to be operational by the end of February. “As soon as the Motherwell Thusong Service Centre is accredited by the national Department of Transport, residents will be able to get services closer to them and mitigate the demand at the centres in Uitenhage and Korsten,” he continued. According to Best, the Department has already visited the Motherwell centre three times and advised officials as to what must be done to become compliant. “The Director of Traffic and Licensing, Warren Prins, in collaboration with the Executive Director of Safety and Security, Advocate Keith Meyer, are looking at 2 additional points where only the renewal of driver’s licences will be done. “This would mean that we will have a
traffic and licensing centre in Korsten, another in Uitenhage and one in Motherwell by May 2018 and the 2 additional points for the renewals that will come online towards the end of the year.” No other transactions except the renewal of existing driver’s licences will be done at those two points, which means residents will be able to walk up to a live enrolment unit and update their licences. “We are also investigating the possible implementation of an online booking system which is currently used by other metropolitan municipalities with great success. “This will enable members of the public to make a booking as at any other professional business. It will eliminate situations where more people than the centre can accommodate or service pitch up at the traffic and drivers licensing centres. “Nobody else besides those who have booked will then be assisted,” Best concluded.

Manhunt for robbers in Despatch Police officials from the South African Police Service in Despatch have launched a manhunt for suspects who allegedly robbed a business in the Main Road of Despatch during the early hours of Tuesday. It is alleged that the complainant and his co-workers were busy unlocking the door of the bakery when they were suddenly approached by several male suspects who threatened them with firearms. “The complainant tried to lock the door, but the suspects forced the door open and broke the glass door in the process. The suspects ushered the complainant and his coworkers inside of the shop, demanded the keys of the safe and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes in an unknown vehicle,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart. Detectives from SAPS Despatch are following up on all possible leads with the assistance of the local criminal record centre. The Station Commander of SAPS Despatch, Captain Flippie de Jager said: “A team of detectives were set up to follow up on all possible leads and they will leave no stone unturned to bring the offenders to book”. Captain De Jager requested business owners to make use of private security companies to assist them when they open or close for business. SAPS also warned business owners to bank regularly and not to leave large sums of money in their safes. he pre-production Land Rover which in 1948 gave the world its first glimpse of this iconic “world-conquering” vehicle is in the process of being restored. It has been missing for the last 63 years. The restoration is in celebration of Land Rover’s 70th anniversary. It was shown at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show and for years the whereabouts of this demonstration Land Rover with chassis number LR3 was a mystery. It was last on the road in the 1960s, after which it spent 20 years in a Welsh field before being bought as a restoration project,

Local netball umpire to officiate in UK HEILIE COMBRINCK

ne of South Africa’s four international netball umpires, Theresa Prince from Despatch, on Tuesday left for the UK where she will officiate at the Netball Quad Series taking place at The Copperbox in London.

The four netball countries that will be participating are Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa. All these games will be broadcast live on SuperSport. The second leg of the series will be at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, where she will officiate the two top countries in the world: Australia vs New Zealand. The other international netball umpire from South Africa also present at the Netball Quad Series is Marielouw van der Merwe. Prince will be umpiring on Monday, January 22nd when England will play against Australia and then back in South Africa on January 28th, she will be umpiring the two top countries in the world. “I am also proud to be one of the 13 best umpires in the world that will be participating in the prestige Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Queensland,” said Theresa Prince, who will be leaving for the Gold Coast on 30 March 2018. The Commonwealth Games is considered as one of the pinnacles of a player’s career and therefore it is a huge honour to officiate at these high standards. South Africa’s international netball umpires are Marielouw van der Merwe, Janet Edeling, Elizna van den Berg and Theresa Prince, the only international netball umpire from the Eastern Cape.

Memorial race held at Victory Raceway
=Victory Raceway will host the Curt Alchin Memorial Race on Saturday in Victoria Drive, Walmer, in honour of Alchin, a South African champion in oval racing, who passed away on January 28, 2012 while competing in a V8 American saloon race. The competing classes will be junior hot rods, pinkrods, hot rods, 1660’s, 2.1 modifieds, heavy metals and American saloons. Racing will kick off at 6pm. Anticipation rises for world’s oldest River Mile Nelson Mandela Bay is honoured to host one of the world’s oldest swimming events, which will take place on Sunday, February 18, at the picturesque Cannonville Village along the banks of the Sunday’s River. The first race was held in the river at Redhouse on January 20, 1924. The 94th running of the River Mile will see all events and festivities taking place on February 18th. Entry to the festival is R20 and gates will open at 7am. The first event, the 5km Family Fun Run, will start at 08:00, followed by the About IT Off-Road Triathlons. Two distances are avail-
able for the triathlon, namely the short course (a 250m tide assisted swim) and a 20km MTB cycle and 5km run with a minimum age requirement of 16. The long course triathlon is a 500m swim, 42km MTB cycle and a 10km run and the minimum age requirement is 20.
