Wheels 4 Sight offers free eye screening “
EIGHTY percent of our awareness and perception comes through our eyes which is the driving force of life.” This is according to Gail Cillie, chairperson
of the Eastern Cape branch of Retina South Africa, which will be the beneficiary of the Wheels 4 Sight fundraiser to be held at Spiders Web on the outskirts of Despatch on
Saturday, May 5th. “The event is held in order to help change the future for individuals and families living with vision loss,” said Denis Murphy from the Uitenhage Lions Club, the organisers of the Wheels 4 Sight day.
Free eye screening
Activities of the day include Eye Zone, manned by Retina SA personnel, who will be conducting free eye screening to determine if a person needs spectacles and to discuss eye related issues. The autorefractor, a computer-controlled machine used during an eye examination, is provided by Specsavers Uitenhage branch. This branch supports the Uitenhage Lions Club and specifically its Operation Brightsight, which provides many unfortunate and poor people with the opportunity to see clearly by assisting them in obtaining spectacles. Luister!FM will be broadcasting from the site and there will be live performances on stage by singers of the likes of Jacques Saaiman, Monique Marais, JJ Botha, Wanda van Rooyen, Marilize Els and Ru-Ana Wentzel.

Farm attackers arrested within 24 hours THE Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga has applauded the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit which had been roped in to assist with the investigation relating to a house robbery and attack that took place on a farm in the Sunlands area, Addo last Saturday evening. “Four suspects, aged between 26 and 41, were behind bars in less than 24-hours after allegedly committing the offences,” said Lt General Ntshinga. tacked by unknown men. “The suspects assaulted him with an axe and demanded the keys to his safe and fled with three firearms, electronic equipment and forced the complainant into his white Isuzu bakkie and they drove to a neighbouring farm. They also ransacked the neighbour’s house and drove off to a residence, believed to be somewhere in Motherwell, where they tied up the complainant for the duration of the night. Early last Sunday the suspects took the complainant’s credit cards and used it at a shopping centre in Port Elizabeth. They later drove the complainant to a service station near Njoli Square, KwaZakhele where
they released the victim and returned his Isuzu bakkie. The complainant managed to drive back to his farm and called the local police. He was taken to a hospital where he was admitted with head and arm injuries. The breakthrough was made on Monday night when the team searched residential homes of suspects in Addo. Two firearms and ammunition were recovered at the time of the arrests. The investigations are continuing and the search for the outstanding firearms are ongoing. The four suspects will face several charges including attempted murder, house robbery and abduction and additional charges may be added. -REPORTER

LENOX, die Duitse herdershond wat vyf jaar deel was van die polisie in Uitenhage se K9-eenheid en ’n bekende by plaaslike skole was waar hy kinders waardevolle lewenslesse geleer het, is verlede Donderdag dood. Sers. Melissa Potgieter, sy hanteerder, beskryf die 10-jarige Lenox as ’n dier met ’n “groot houding”. Sy sê Lenox was verantwoordelik vir die aankeer van een van die drie verdagtes wat in September 2017 ’n weduwee van Kirkwood ontvoer, aangerand en beroof het. Kapt. Gerda Swart, ’n polisiewoordvoerder, sê Lenox was sedert Maart siek en is Donderdag in die dierehospitaal opgeneem nadat sy toestand versleg het. Hy is met kanker gediagnoseer en moes uitgesit word. “Lenox was baie kwaai, maar lief vir sy werk. Terwyl ons na verdagtes gesoek het, sou hy begin tjank en neul tot ons hulle kry,” sê Potgieter. “Hy het min tekens van sy kanker gewys. Ek het gedink hy word maar net ’n bietjie oud en dat dit die rede is waarom hy teen die einde so uitasem was.” Lenox het twee van sy vorige hanteerders gebyt en daarom die bynaam “Baasbyter”

Support for women with breast cancer REACH For Recovery, a support group designed to help women with breast cancer in their return to daily life, has trained new volunteers to join the groups in Uitenhage and Port Elizabeth. Estelle Botha, Chairlady of Reach For Recovery Uitenhage Group said she still remembers the early days of the support group, operating with only three trained volunteers and a secretary. Reach For Recovery Uitenhage breast cancer support group was established in 2007. “I look back with fondest memories of all the ladies that have crossed our path. Especially the visits to newly diagnosed patients and encouraging them not to give up,” said Botha. “With the new group now, we can only go from strength to strength and hope that we will be able to stretch our wings and reach a vast group of women of all cultures across Nelson Mandela Bay.” Reach For Recovery is built on a simple principle, that of a women who has experienced breast cancer herself, volunteering to give freely of her time and experience to assist another woman with breast cancer. These volunteers are trained and render an emotional care and practical support programme to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients as well as to their families. Botha, who is a founder member of the local Reach For Recovery branch is, apart from the newly trained volunteers, also supported by long time volunteers who after all the years are still active. They are Rachel Brinkhuis, Eleanore van Niekerk, Margaret Jacobs and Jacky van Straaten. Reach For Recovery services are done at no charge to the patient and are available to any women who requests them. Each branch has to sustain itself through localised fundraising and the support of its community. “We would like to thank one and all who have made a contribution towards Reach for

He was part of the team, which 20 years ago privatised the station and made it the first independent commercial radio station in the Eastern Cape. The annual Big Walk for Cancer, which is the Eastern Cape’s biggest charity event, won both the commercial radio award for Community Project and the commercial radio award for Promotion/Stunt/Event. ie liefde vir kinders, is die grootste rede hoekom twee stigterslede van ’n kleuterskool op Uitenhage, na 30 jaar stééds volstoom betrokke is by grondslagfase-onderrig. Pierie Wierie Kleuterskool & Nasorg het in April 1988 sy deure oopgemaak met Eileen Bekker en Hester Erasmus (nou Drotsché) aan die stuur van sake. Daar was toe 12 kinders in die klas. Die twee vroue is tot vandag toe vuur en vlam vir opvoeding en die dryf agter dié kleuterskool. “Ek kom uit ’n familie propvol onderwysers. My ma, Paddy Swanepoel, was my mentor. Sy het destyds met ’n skool vir gestremde kinders begin hier op Uitenhage. Dié skool het later jare ontwikkel tot Drostdy Werkplek soos ons dit vandag ken,” sê Eileen. Paddy was vir 21 jaar die hoof van die skool en het ook die gesogte Rotariër De Mist-toekenning ontvang vir haar rol in die gemeenskap, veral ten opsigte van haar betrokkenheid by gestremde kinders. “Destyds toe my ma haar skool moes opgee kon ek nie verstaan hoekom sy so emosioneel was nie. Ek’t vir haar gesê dis net ’n skool, maar vandag verstaan ek hoekom sy so gevoel het. Ek voel presies dieselfde oor Pierie Wierie, want dit is my baby wat nou al dertig is. “Na my ma se aftrede het sy haar glyplank wat by haar skool was vir my gegee. Net daar het ek besluit ek wil ook ’n skooltjie hê. En dit was die begin van Pierie Wierie hier in Carinus-rylaan.” Drie dekades later spog Eileen nie net met haar ma se oorspronklike glyplank op haar
speelterrein nie, maar ook met ’n rondomtalie, die enigste op Uitenhage by ’n kleuterskool. Paddy het destyds vir Eileen en Hester gehelp met die uitwerk van ’n kurrikulum. “Ons lag nou nog, want toe ons twee begin het, was ons binne ’n halfuur klaar met die dag se werk. Dit moes ons vir vier ure besig hou! My ma sê toe, as daar tyd oor is laat die kindertjies toilet toe gaan. Toe sê ons, ons het hulle seker twaalf keer laat gaan en hande was en alles! “So stupid was ons in die begin, maar mens leer mos vinnig uit jou foute en dinge was gou perfek volgens plan.” Pierie Wierie is ’n multikulturele skool en bied ook nasorg vir graad 1 tot 7 leerders van Handhaaf aan. Daar is tans 65 leerders wat in die middae by Pierie Wierie vir nasorg inboek. Pierie Wierie het 8 kleuters (3-4 jariges), 8 kinders in graad RR (5-jariges) en ook ’n preprimêre klas met 15 kinders. ’n Span van 7 personeel is betrokke by die onderrig. Die kleuterskool en nasorg is geregistreer by die departement van onderwys en volg ook hul kurrikulum. “Baie, baie liefde vir die kinders en baie, baie geduld is nodig om ’n kleuterskool met sukses te bedryf.” Eileen sê ’n kind bly ’n kind, maar oor drie dekades het omstandighede baie verander. “Die Here het vir elke kind ’n pa en ma gegee. Die Here het goedgedink dat die ouers ’n kind moet lei, maar nou lei die kinders die ouers.” Tog sê Eileen, sal die liefde vir kinders, deeglike opleiding, dissipline en baie geduld altyd die resep bly om ’n kind te laat gedy in sy of haar opvoedingsperiode.

Outdoor teaching for greater appreciation of Ubuntu BRINGING Life Sciences, English and History class outdoors made the Riebeek College Grade 10 outing to Donkin Reserve and the Nelson Mandela Bay beachfront a special learning exercise. As part of the our Ubuntu theme, the girls were involved in inter-connectivity exercises in that each learner was tasked with drawing up a compliments page for another learner in the grade and mindfulness exercises were undertaken. The girls also undertook a beach clean-up along the Port Elizabeth beachfront as part of their Mandela100@Riebeek - 100 Acts Of Kindness campaign. Learning about inclusive heritage when visiting the Donkin Reserve led to a greater appreciation of Ubuntu for the girls. “We learnt about the South African heritage that we often find ourselves taking for granted. Another Grade 10 learner, Anabo Thompson, was poetic about the outing, “Drowning in the heat of the boiling sun, but the contact between your feet and the fading waves soothe your body and relaxes your soul.” Alexandra Dennis, also in Grade 10 at Riebeek said, “The sun-kissed, jagged masterpiece is playing tug of war with the waves. I love not knowing when the next one will crash. I find the uncertainty relaxing.” At the historic Donkin Reserve girls were told the sad love story of Sir Rufane Donkin and the pyramid he had built for his late wife. The learners were given a chance to look at inclusive heritage and were given a broader understanding of exactly what the heritage meant to the community at present and those before the current inhabitants of Port Elizabeth.

Early intervention vital for autistic children THANDI SETOKOE
<Victory Kids provides an intensive programme to prepare young children, aged two to seven, for entering into a mainstream or special educational environment. Classes are kept small and the children receive intensive one-on-one training allowing them the best chance to reach their potential. With one of the learners is teacher Terri Niekerk.
“WHILE April is Autism Awareness Month, it provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of support for research, early intervention, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.” This is according to Zeidie-Lee Muller, centre manager of Victory Kids, a non-profit, public benefit organisation in Newton Park that supports early intervention centres for children with special needs. Imagine being told that your child would never be able to walk, talk or live independently – this is the sad reality that thousands of parents of children with the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) face every day. According to research, ASD is a brain disorder that too often results in a lifetime of impaired thinking, feeling and social functioning. The disorder, which becomes apparent generally by the age of three, typically affects a child’s ability to communicate, form relationships and respond appropriately to the external world. Recent statistics from the Centre for Diseases Control suggest that the numbers of ASD cases are on the rise with one in 68 children being diagnosed, while in South Africa it is believed that a child with ASD is born every 45 minutes. According to Muller, it is important to learn the early signs of autism and become familiar with the milestones a child should be reaching. “There are many warning signs or red flags

but the signs and symptoms of autism vary widely, as do its effects. “Some have only mild impairments, while others have more obstacles to overcome,” Muller said. She described how every child on the autism spectrum had problems, at least to some degree, in the following areas: communicating verbally and non-verbally, relating to others and the world around them and thinking and behaving flexibly.
“When it comes to autism, catching it early makes a huge difference as treatment and therapy can reduce the disorder’s effects and help a child learn, grow and thrive,” Muller said. Parents Clinton and Algene van Boomen said life wouldn’t be the same without their son, now four-years-old, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. “He has brought so much love and happiness into our lives. It’s important to take action as soon as you notice that there is something
wrong. “When we noticed the signs, we started doing research and decided to seek medical advice,” Algene said. Another parent, Shakira Hendricks, said the main thing people needed to realise was that autism was not like it is in the movies. “When you google autism there’s a lot of information, but it’s nothing like what we actually go through at home,” Hendricks said. The 37-year-old mother, who has two older children, described how the first two years following her son’s diagnosis were the hardest. “We were always covered in bruises. Your child wants to hurt you – they want to bite, kick and pinch you, and you have to try to stop them from doing that,” Hendricks added. Currently enrolled at Victory Kids, the two boys are said to have made amazing progress. “We can now take our son to the mall which was something that used to overwhelm him. He couldn’t stand the bright lights and noise. I have also stopped telling everyone that he is autistic because I’ve realised that if we don’t say it, people don’t even notice. It’s the labelling that makes people look at him differently,” Algene said. Hendricks said people need to understand that it’s okay to have an autistic child. )The centre will be hosting their third annual Autism Awareness Walk under the theme, Light It Up Blue for Autism, from Happy Valley to Something Good and back on Saturday from 09:00.

lenge is the Eastern Cape’s richest open water swimming event with an overall cash prize pool of R43 000 up for grabs with prizes shared equally between the swimsuit and wetsuit categories. With the increased number of entries, organisers of the swim have taken an unprecedented step to increase the safety of the swimmers this year by insisting that all swimmers have to swim either with a highly visible swim buoy or have a personal second paddling alongside them, both measures ensuring that appointed water safety will be able to see the swimmers much more easily on the 5km route. The swim on Saturday offers a fantastic spectacle from the shores of Pollok Beach where spectators can watch the entire race unfold in front of them. Race start is at 08:30.

World’s best bikers to compete at Winterberg enduro ROVER Motorcycle Club will be hosting the Rover Winterberg National Enduro and TBone Junior Inter Provincial on April 28. This event forms part of the national series for 2018 and takes place at Greater Van der Kemps Kloof off Mission Road. The GPS co-ordinates are -33,90543, 25,45458. The organisers expect to see in excess of 150 top riders on the day competing for their respective championships. Two of the world’s top five enduro riders, Travis Teasedale and Wade Young, have announced that they will take part in the event. Tim Young will, more than likely, also be in the line-up. This will be a Winterberg to remember. Food, coffee and beverages will be on sale. The location and course layout are exceptional for spectator viewing. The Rover Motorcycle and Car Club was founded on 13 December 1950. In the early 70s the club moved to its present home on Schoenmakerskop Road and the motor vehicle members broke away to form their own motor car club. =Oval track racers Pikkie Joubert (SA1) and Joshua Sletcher (100) will be seen in action during the PE Oval Track Raceway’s next meeting on Saturday. Racers will be out to score maximum points, so fans can expect racing at its best. This will be the first National Qualifier for the PE Region in preparation for the National Championships which will be held in Bloemfontein during October. Saturday’s racing starts at 18:00.
