Burn survivor inspires learners “M
y scars are external, most people are hiding their internal scars. I am not ashamed of myself.” These were the words of Itumeleng Sekhu, a well-known burn survivor, social activist, author of What Do Your See? and motivational speaker, who visited schools in KwaNobuhle to inspire learners and especially matrics to work hard and be the best they can. She gives motivational talks through her Itumeleng Sekhu Foundation, a non-profit organisation set up to help others. “I was the smartest kid in my school. That made me popular. I worked hard every day. If you want a certain life for yourself you must work for it, prepare for it.” Khulisa, another non-profit organisation, and Sovereign Foods invited and arranged for Sekhu to deliver inspirational talks at Solomon Mahlangu High School, Nkululeko Secondary School and the Ithembalethu Project for children with special needs. As part of Sovereign Foods’ Corporate Social Investment (CSI) mandate they focus on uplifting communities and assisting with educational programmes and other socio - economic programmes. Sekhu told the learners that, “Before, I cried myself to sleep, but now I go in front of people so that they can ask me what happened.” Asleep in her bedroom one evening when she was just 11 months old, a burning candle fell on her. This resulted in her being severely disfigured by the fire. Her right hand as well as four fingers on her left hand were amputated and her left ear completely burnt off. She has undergone more than 100 surgical operations. This did not deter her from reaching her dreams she told learners. She has had a successful career in radio and television for the

Meisie stuit nie vir seldsame siekte KAREN PIENAAR
D
erduisende matrieks het Maandag met die laaste eksamen van hul skoolloopbaan begin. Vir een 19-jarige meisie in Hoërskool Brandwag sal dié eksamen egter iets wees wat sy net ’n paar jaar gelede geglo het, sy nooit sou kon bereik nie. Monique Huyser was op 16 ’n entoesiastiese atleet wat aan landloop en atletiek deelgeneem het. Sy het graag in 800 meter, 200 meter en hekkies meegeding. Sy onthou soos gister hoe sy op Saterdag 29 Junie 2014 lam en swak wakker geword het. Teen die volgende oggend het Monique gesukkel om asem te haal en moes dokters haar by ongevalle suurstof gee. Min het sy daardie dag geweet hoe ingrypend haar lewe sou verander. Sy is aanvanklik in die Provinsiale Hospitaal op Uitenhage opgeneem, maar dokters het vinnig vermoed wat fout was en haar na Livingstone Hospitaal oorgeplaas. Die dokters was reg: op 16 is Monique Huyser met die seldsame siekte Guillain-Barre-sindroom gediagnoseer. Pasiënte met dié siekte moet toesien hoe hul eie immuunstelsel hul senuweestelsel aanval wat veroorsaak dat hulle spiere verswak en verlam. Kort nadat sy na Livingstone oorgeplaas is,

Al hét mense haar moed probeer inpraat, het sy tydens haar lang hospitaalverblyf be-
gin hoop verloor en gereeld snags gedroom dat sy sou doodgaan, soos van die ander pasiënte. Monique het die begin van die tweede kwartaal in 2015 teruggekeer skool toe. Sy was afhanklik in ’n rolstoel en was in ’n nuwe jaargroep aangesien sy graad 10 moes voltooi. “’n Mens voel soos ’n las. Jy kan nie goed vir jouself doen nie. Dit was ’n ander jaargroep en hulle het my nie soos mý maats geken nie.”
Met harde werk kon sy mettertyd die rolstoel vir krukke verruil en teen die einde van 2015 het sy graad 10 geslaag. Deesdae kan sy op haar eie loop, maar haar voetspiere reageer steeds nie heeltemal reg nie wat haar balans bemoeilik. Sy kry ook ekstra tyd vir eksamenvraestelle omdat haar handspiere geaffekteer is. Sy het in die onlangse rekordeksamen ’n gemiddeld van 78% behaal en mik vir hoër punte in haar eindeksamen. Sy dra ’n sweetpak en tekkies skool toe. “Dis oor die skoolskoene. Ek kan net nie met hulle loop nie. Ek kan met niks behalwe tekkies loop nie. Dis só swaar. En ek was mal oor hoë hakke.” Ten spye van haar dapperheid is leed maklik in haar oë te bespeur. Sy dink nie oor hoekom dit juis met haar moes gebeur het nie. Dis ’n vraag wat sy lankal agtergelaat het. “Ek probeer fokus op wat ek wél het en om nié terug te kyk na hoe dit wás nie. Dit help my ook baie om te skryf oor hoe ek voel.” Selfs met haar positiewe gesindheid vrees Monique steeds dat die siekte sal terugkeer. Een van Monique se ideale is om met ’n rybewys ’n deel van haar onafhanklikheid te herwin. Die beenspiere en senuwees wat vir voetbeweging verantwoordelik is, skep egter steeds ’n probleem. Sy mag dalk ’n aangepaste motor nodig hê om haar droom te verwesenlik. Monique hoop om later haarself as verpleegster of in ’n ander mediese rigting te bekwaam, maar volgende jaar gaan sy eers werk om geld vir studies te spaar. Maar vir eers is haar gedagtes nou gefokus op haar eindeksamen.

Wishes for a peaceful Diwali Diwali or Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is celebrated today, October 19th. It is one of the largest and brightest festivals celebrated by Hindus across the globe. It is traditionally celebrated over five days. HERITAGE TOUR FOR VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 1950 ;The annual EPVCC Heritage Tour to St Francis will be held October 21st. This will be the third tour of its kind organised by Riaan Hanekom and it is themed each year. The 2017 tour will focus on cars built before 1950 but there will also be cars on the run built between 1950 and 1990. A total of 39 cars will participate in the run. The aim is to get collectors to use their older cars as they seem to be stored in the back of garages. ie gewilde The Meadows 4x4 Familiedag word vanjaar op 11 November in die Elands-riviervallei, sowat 30km van Rocklands af gehou. Avontuursoekers met viertrek-voertuie word genooi om die uitdagende roete saam te kom aanpak. Volgens Donovan Whitehead, wat saam met sy vrou Sunelle dié 4x4 uitdaging en familiedag organiseer, word voertuie in groepe ingedeel om dit makliker te maak om die roete sonder enige onnodige oponthoud te voltooi. Elke groep het iemand wat die voortou vat. En daar is ook kategorie-pryse te wen. Die 4x4 roete gaan deur fynbosveld, verby
asemrowende kranse en rotsagtige berg-oorhange en ook deur natuurlike bosse waar ou geelhoutbome gesien kan word. Daar is ook ‘n standhoudende fontein op The Meadows waar water gebottel word. Besoekers kan van dié gebottelde vars-water uit die fontein koop. Inskrywings om op hierdie viertrekroete te gaan is is R300 per voertuig en bestuurder wat deelneem en R50 per passasier. Daar sal stalletjies wees met verskillende kosse, ‘n biertent (waar heuningkarrie geniet kan word), plaasprodukte, heuning, handwerk, kaas en vermaak vir die kleinspan.
